"THE GHOST SHIP" Composer Don Besig: Thank You for the Excellent Virtual Choir Performance
Updated: Jan 26, 2022
We'd like to share with you a wonderful surprise email from Don Besig, one of the composers of "The Ghost Ship" performed by MUSYCA's Melody Choir:
"I just finished watching the charming YouTube video of “The Ghost Ship” performed by some students from your program and wanted to thank you and these talented youngsters for the excellent virtual choir performance. Their singing was wonderfully natural and expressive. It was great to see them enjoying the song and conveying the spirit both musically and visually. I must say it brought more than just a bit of a smile to my face! I looked through the MUSYCA website and read about the exciting programs you and your colleagues are providing for young singers in the San Fernando Valley. You certainly seem to have discovered the right balance to keep the students motivationally inspired as they improve their skills and experience performance opportunities. My best wishes to you and them - and my thanks for selecting this little song to be a part of your program."
Thank you, Don! We love teaching "The Ghost Ship" and the kids love singing it! It brought many happy music-making moments for us during this difficult year. It is just a fantastic piece, one of our choir's favorites, and we will be returning to it many times in the future.

The Ghost Ship
(by Don Besig and Nancy Price)
Now listen well as a tale I tell of a night I shook with fear.
We were sailing west on the open sea, headin’ home from a long, long year.
I was standing watch all alone that night when I heard a wailing cry.
As I strained to see what the sound could be
Something flashed, and caught my eye.
And the cold wind blew.
‘Twas then I spied of the starboard side a strange, mysterious sight.
I froze with fear as it drifted near like a ghost in the dark of night.
I could see a sail on a broken mast and deserted decks below.
From all around came a mournful sound, but I saw not a living soul!
Part 1: And the cold wind blew.
Part 2: And the cold wind blew.
All: Well, I held fast to the forward mast as the ship moved slowly on,
And I watched that way ‘til the break of day
When I knew that it finally had gone.
Oh, they laughed and joked as I told my tale to the captain and the men,
But the story’s true, I can promise you, and it’s sure to happen again.
Yes, it’s sure to happen again.
The Grand is a retro fusion of the past creating a fun relaxed nightclub experience. The club is highly atmospheric with its 3 rooms of different ambiances. The Grand’s main room is an eclectic cross between a Victorian train station, an old vineyard storeroom, and an old English hunting lodge. “Sanctum” is reminiscent of an old New Orleans bordello and speakeasy. The Ghost Ship is a complete immersive fantasy suggestive of a marooned derelict galleon. This new venture is filled with innovative sound and holographic tech to create a total 4D voyage experience.
Although we do offer small bites, we are not a restaurant. This is not the environment for dining.
The Grand is the brainchild of Steven Rogers who has designed, built, and operated clubs and restaurants in several countries during his 40 year career. He has worked with many of the vanguards of New York City culture during the seventies and eighties before his arrival in Phoenix, Arizona. Locally, he is responsible for a dozen establishments, most notably the Works and Amsterdam.
