Here's how to talk to ghosts in Phasmophobia and successfully rid its presence before your time's up

A dark room with a light shining and a radio

Published: Nov 4, 2020

How do you talk to ghosts in Phasmophobia? By now you’ve probably realised that the ghosts in Phasmophobia are a chatty bunch, or more like, they enjoy your soft whimpers into the dark corners of whatever house they’ve chosen to haunt.

As Phasmopobia is an online multiplayer game, where you can play with up to three friends. There’s a lot of lively debate about the best course of action, but as you ghost hunters deliberate how best to rid the area of the unwanted spirit, they are actually listening in on your every word. If that wasn’t scary enough, they will also respond to some of the pretty obvious things you’ll say as you stumble blindly around corridors grasping a torch and clutching your chosen ghost-slaying device.

Out of the devices you can choose is the spirit box, a nifty tool that can be used to discover more information about the ghost type you’re hunting. Bear in mind that Phasmophobia’s voice recognition can be a little off, but in our opinion, it’s well worth the investment as a more subdued way of teasing your ghost out of its hiding spot.

How to use the spirit box in Phasmophobia

As you can use the spirit box to ask ghosts questions and find out more about them, you first need to place the box in the room with the ghost, turn off all the lights, and then ask away. It might take a few tries at first, but below are a set of questions that the ghost will respond to.

Phasmophobia spirit box commands

  • Can you speak?
  • Can you speak to us?
  • Make a noise
  • Open a door
  • Open this door
  • Turn on the light
  • Turn off the light
  • Are there any ghosts?
  • Give us a sign
  • Let us know you are here
  • Do something
  • Is there anyone with me?
  • Can we speak?
  • We would like to speak to you
  • Is there anyone here?
  • May I ask you?
  • Would you like to talk?
  • Are you the only one here?
  • Are you waiting?
  • Is there anything I can do?
  • Do you know who we are?
  • Are you happy?
  • Are you here all the time?
  • Are you male or female?
  • Do you want us to leave?
  • Can I ask you?
  • Can you make a sound?
  • Show us your presence
  • Knock something
  • Make a sound
  • Open the door
  • Throw something
  • We mean you no harm
  • We are friends
  • Is this your home?

That’s how to use the Phasmophobia spirit box and all the commands – but if your sanity is slowly depleting, here’s our guide to using the crucifix in Phasmophobia . There is a nasty glitch that will result in the Phasmophobia spirit box not working, despite having a working mic connected. It’s not a fix, but this appears to be solved in most cases by just hopping into a fresh investigation.

[Guide] Phasmophobia: How To Use the Spirit Box

spirit box komendy

The spirit box is a default item in phasmophobia and will automatically be included in your loadout for each investigation you go on. It’s used for the collection of spirit box evidence which is an evidence piece for identifying nearly half of the ghosts; Spirit, Wraith, Phantom, Poltergeist, Mare, Yokai, Moroi, Onryo, Deogen, The Twins, and The Mimic.

Using the spirit box

spirit box komendy

Add it to your inventory from the van, and flip it on with your ‘primary use’ button.

The lights near the ghost must be turned off in order for the ghost to respond.

If your voice recognition is on, press your push to talk button to ask the ghost a question.

Alternatively, you can switch your voice recognition mode to ‘Text’ in the settings to be prompted 3 questions when using the item (click one of the questions to ask it to the ghost).

You can ask; “Where are you?,” “Are you friendly?", or “How old are you?” Be warned, speaking to the ghost may anger it and cause some unwanted ghost activity.

spirit box komendy

The tier 1 spirit box has a range of 3 meters, low audio quality, and a low response rate. When speaking to the ghost, pay attention to the LED bulbs. If a question is recognized by the game, the far right LED will blink red, and if you get a response it will blink white.

spirit box komendy

At a range of 4 meters, medium audio quality, and a medium response rate, the tier 2 spirit box is a significant improvement over the previous version. If the game recognizes a question, a small black ‘X’ will flash. If you get a response then the ghost icon will flash.

spirit box komendy

The tier 3 spirit box is vastly superior to its predecessors. It has 5 meters of range, high audio quality, and a high response rate. If the game recognizes an asked question, but no response is given, the LEDs will flash red. The LEDs will flash white if you get a response.

Tips and Tricks

When using the spirit box with your voice recognition in ‘Text’ mode, the ghost cannot identify you from your voice like it can with ‘Text’ mode off. This can be useful against the yokai.

The moroi and deogen ghosts cannot hide spirit box evidence unless evidence is set to 0.

If you hear the Moroi on the spirit box, it will place a curse on you, increasing your passive sanity drain. The curse can be cleansed with sanity restoration items.

The Deogen has a 33% chance to produce a unique spirit box response if you are within 1 meter of the ghost. It sounds like an aggressive and ghostly asthma attack.

From personal experience, the indicators on the tier 1 and 2 spirit boxes can sometimes be misleading. It would be best to hear the ghost audibly respond before marking spirit box evidence in your journal.

The Spirit Box can be turned on via toggle (default: right click on mouse). The Spirit Box emits a constant static noise while active.

The microphone LED/icon will indicate whether or not the Spirit Box is listening (when Push To Talk or Toggle is used), or receiving microphone input (when Voice Activation is used).

Questioning [ ]

Spirit Box text UI

The Spirit Box's textual UI.

There are three ways to probe for a response via the Spirit Box:

  • If using voice chat, the Spirit Box will recognise any valid question asked by the player.
  • If using the text-based UI, the UI will appear upon turning on the Spirit Box. Players can then click to select one of 3 questions. The player can exit the UI by turning off the Spirit Box.
  • If the player selects Vosk, Windows, or None as the voice recognition method, having voice chat active (by holding the push-to-talk button or selecting Voice Activation) will enable the Spirit Box to automatically "ping" a question every 10 seconds.

If nothing happens upon asking a question, it is possible the game did not recognise any valid phrase, or the player's voice recognition is not working properly. Note that the microphone LED/icon shows whether the game is picking up the player's microphone only if the player's voice chat option is set to Voice Activation . When using the Windows voice recognition system, this does not necessarily mean that the system is working properly.

Answering [ ]

SpiritBoxAndYou

The indicators for each Spirit Box tier.

When a question is successfully registered, the Spirit Box will return one of two results:

  • If all the relevant conditions are met and the chance is successful, the ghost LED will turn white on a Tier I Spirit Box, the ghost icon will display on a Tier II Spirit Box, the response LEDs will turn white on a Tier III Spirit Box, and a distorted voice line will be heard through the Spirit Box. This is considered as evidence of Spirit Box.
  • If the ghost LED turns red on a Tier I Spirit Box, the 'X' icon displays on a Tier II Spirit Box, or the response LEDs turn red on a Tier III Spirit Box, one or more of the conditions listed below have not been met.

Evidence requirements [ ]

In order to get a successful Spirit Box response from the ghost, all of the following is required:

  • The ghost has Spirit Box as one of its evidences.
  • The player must be in the investigation area. This means being going past the wooden gates (for campsites), being indoors or in the square courtyard ( Sunny Meadows ), or being indoors in all other maps.
  • The player must be within a certain range of the ghost (3 metres with a Tier I, 4 metres with a Tier II, and 5 metres with a Tier III).
  • The "main" light in the player's current room must be off . Bedside lamps do not have to be turned off. Light emitted from equipment, including electronic and non-electronic equipment, does not affect this. Lights in other rooms, including rooms or hallways that are directly adjacent, may be left on, and any doors between the rooms can stay open.
  • Ghosts which respond only to "people who are alone" will respond only if there is a single person in the room at the moment the question is asked. If the ghost is noted to respond to everyone, the number of people in the room does not affect the ghost's ability to respond. If the difficulty has a setup time (e.g. Amateur and Intermediate), this will be indicated on the corkboard and in the journal.
  • If all other conditions are met, there is a chance of the ghost responding per question asked. The chance depends on the tier of the Spirit Box.

If the player is particularly unlucky, a combination of these factors may cause the Spirit Box to repeatedly turn the LEDs red, or show an 'X', despite the ghost having Spirit Box as one of its evidences.

Other than the need for the Spirit Box to be near the player, there are no further checks on where the Spirit Box itself is.

Interference [ ]

The Spirit Box is considered an electronic equipment. When interfered with, all the LEDs/icons will flicker rapidly. Holding an active Spirit Box within 7.5 metres of a ghost on the same floor will attract it to the player.

Note that the ghost may still respond audibly if the player asks questions while the Spirit Box is being interfered with. This also counts as Spirit Box evidence.

Non-evidence [ ]

The following does not count as evidence of Spirit Box:

  • The ghost touching a door or an object
  • One ghost vocalisation involves the ghost repeatedly saying certain words; this is also not evidence of Spirit Box
  • Any other phenomenon not related to the Spirit Box

Ghost-specific abilities [ ]

  • The Deogen has a 33% chance to respond with heavy breathing instead of a regular response if the player is standing within 1 metre of the ghost. [1]
  • The Moroi will curse the player who asked a question if they successfully obtain a response. The cursing response will not sound any different.
  • It is recommended that the Spirit Box be used early on in the investigation as soon as the presumed favourite room has been found as using it effectively required a player to remain alone in the dark with the ghost for several seconds, thus considerably reducing their sanity and allowing a potential hunt to start. This is especially true for higher difficulties .
  • As the Spirit Box emits a constant static when turned on, it may interfere with the ability to hear ghost activities properly. Turning it off is recommended when not in use.
  • Ghost replies on the Spirit Box do not count as ghost events or interactions .

Possible ghosts [ ]

Types of questions [ ].

There are three types of questions that can be asked:

  • Aggressiveness

Given the nature of voice recognition, questions may be marginally different from one another, so the following lists only contain general phrases that should be used as a guide.

Aggressiveness [ ]

Ghost responses are threatening with murderous intent.

Location [ ]

Responses will correspond to the location of the ghost relative to the player.

Age questions [ ]

Responses will detail the ghost's predetermined age.

  • In real life, a spirit box scans through various radio frequencies to pick up potential sounds that may have come from a ghost, mostly through pareidolia of various different audio clips being strung together to sound like proper phrases or prudent responses to questions.
  • Using the spirit box by itself does not increase ghost activity or interactions , but saying recognised phrases (whether with or without the spirit box) near the ghost can provide a small boost to the rate of interactions.
  • Age related questions do not relate to the ghost's appearance .
  • The response voices are the heavily edited voices of many Phasmophobia content creators.
  • Some Spirit Box questions can also be used on the Ouija Board .
  • The tier 3 Spirit Box text does not show on VR.
  • Ghosts will respond to "Are you French?" as the game thinks it hears "Are you friendly?"

How To Use the Spirit Box

The Spirit Box is a piece of Starter Equipment in Phasmophobia. While the Spirit Box is on, you'll most often hear white noise but when asked a question, a Ghost can respond to answer you through the Spirit Box. You'll need to be in the same room as the Ghost or be at least within 3 meters of to get a response. Additionally, the room's lights must be off.

Some Ghosts may respond with when more than one person is in the room or nearby whereas shy ghosts may only respond if you are alone.

You can either carry the Spirit Box with you as you explore the map and ask the Ghost questions or you can drop it on the floor or a surface in the suspected Ghost room.

Unlike other electronic devices, a Spirit Box won't malfunction during a Hunt but it will reveal your location to a Ghost. For this reason, it is recommended you turn off the Spirit Box during a hunt.

You can carry a maximum of 2 Spirit Boxes during each job.

There are 4 categories you can ask questions from: Difficulty, Location, Age and Personal.

  • What do you want?
  • What should we do?
  • Why are you here?
  • Do you want to hurt us?
  • Do you want to hurt me?
  • Do you want us to leave?
  • Do you want us to stay?

How to Use Spirit Box in Demonologist – All Commands

demonologist-header-3

No YouTuber can fake these hauntings, it is time to go viral as you collect that damning evidence of that all-important question, is there something after death? Demonologist is the latest Horror Game within the Ghost Hunting hemisphere. With similar gameplay mechanics to Phasmophobia, being that you are a Hunter investigating the paranormal activity within haunted places in the hopes of figuring out the entity type which you are up against, Demonologist focusses of atmosphere and the process of Ghost Hunting. Not only do you need to collect evidence so that you can solve the haunting, but you can also exorcise the entity after identification. But to collect evidence, crucial Ghost Hunting Tools are needed, one of which is the means to communicate with the entity. This is our guide on how to use the Spirit Box in Demonologist.

How to Use the Spirit Box

The Spirit Box will be one of your most important Tools within Demonologist. This is because it can cut your list of entities in half if the spirit converses with you. It can be a great starting point to your investigation. Although, be prepared for a creepy atmosphere, with your flashlight in one hand and the trusty Spirit Box in the other, hearing that voice on the other side can be chilling. To use the Spirit Box however, you need to have a microphone enabled so that the game can pick up your voice. The Spirit Box will not work otherwise. Whilst you do not need to Push to Talk for the entity, this is purely for other players in the game with you, you must hold the Spirit Box in order to speak into it.

Related: Best Items and Gadgets to Use in Demonologist

When you have the Spirit Box equipped, the protagonist will hold the Box to the side, at the edge of your LOS. You need to click your left-mouse button in order to talk into the Spirit Box. The entity could speak to you at any time however, even if you are not speaking directly into the Box. So long as you have spoken into the Spirit Box and moved around the area, if the entity can speak, it will respond to your voice. You first however, need to head into the room with paranormal activity (the Entity’s Room). This can be located through the use of other Tools such as the EMF Detector or Thermometer (alternatively look out for visual fog from your breathing as this will indicate that the room you are in is freezing).

What Commands to Use With the Spirit Box

When trying to converse with the entity, players can only use a specific set of phrases that the entity can respond to. Once you have found the Entity’s Room of paranormal activity, either through the sighting of the spirit or the action of items (movement, turning on/off), players should try to communicate via the Spirit Box. You should use the phrases listed below multiple times as the entity may not respond the first time. The entity may not respond if you are inside the Entity Room with other players, or if multiple players are trying to talk through the Spirit Box. For that reason, it is best to attempt to communicate alone. The phrases that can be used in Demonologist as of its release are:

  • ‘Can you talk?’ or ‘Can you speak?’
  • ‘Where are you?’
  • ‘What is your name?’
  • ‘When did you die?’

Be careful that you are not spending too much time in the Entity’s Room at once, especially if you are repeatedly trying to communicate with the entity. After around 3 attempts of the phrases above, you should cross Spirit Box from your Evidence List and move onto your investigation. Spending too much time in this room can result in a damaged sanity bar .

We hope this guide was helpful on how the Spirit Box works, how to use it and all commands that can be used to get that spirit talking. For other Horror Games, we have a lot more content readily available for you to browse through.

What Spirit Box phrases and questions to use in Phasmophobia

Here are the Phasmophobia Spirit Box questions and phrases you can use to talk to ghosts.

phasmophobia spirit box questions

Trying to figure out which Phasmophobia Spirit Box questions to use? If you're looking for that important evidence while tracking a ghost, you're going to need to know how to commune with them.

Not all ghosts will communicate via Spirit Box, but if you ask the right questions you can narrow down your search. So, below you'll find out how to use the Spirit Box in Phasmophobia, plus the questions, phrases, and answers we know ghosts respond to so you can continue gathering the evidence you need. This info will come in handy in the future, as developer Kinetic Games has already outlined plans to make the ghosts smarter in the future by not responding to idle chatter.

  • Phasmophobia ghost types : Identify each scary spirit

How to use the Phasmophobia Spirit Box

First you need to be in the same room inside which you've identified there's a ghost. With the lights off, use the primary action button to turn the Spirit Box on. While it spews out static and cycles through frequencies, feel free to ask questions. When you see the words 'nothing detected' on the display, don't worry. Contrary to what you'd assume, that actually means it's working—the ghost just didn't happen to answer your question. If it continues cycling through frequencies without ever showing the 'nothing detected' message, consider checking your microphone.

You can also throw the Spirit Box on the ground while it's turned on and continue to ask questions. The ghost may not answer right away, so try asking a few different questions before you give up.

If you hear a robotic voice, congrats, that's the ghost talking. You've successfully found some evidence to add to your journal.

Phasmophobia Spirit Box questions and phrases

Phasmophobia uses voice recognition to pick up some simple questions you might ask. Use your local voice chat button to ask some of these Spirit Box questions that might get a response:

  • Are you here?
  • Is there anyone here?
  • Where are you?
  • How old/young are you?
  • What do you want?
  • Show yourself
  • Give us a sign
  • Talk to me/us
  • Open a door
  • Turn on/off the light

This isn't an exhaustive list, but as you'll read below, these questions and phrases should be more than enough to get the evidence you need.

Phasmophobia Spirit Box answers

It's worth mentioning that it doesn't particularly matter what a ghost says through a Spirit Box. In order to use it, you'll already need to be near a ghost, so the content of their answers doesn't often tell you anything you don't already know. They seem to really love answering unrelated questions with the word 'adult', for instance. What's important is just that you get an answer. Getting a response, regardless of which one, means you can definitely mark the evidence in your journal, which will narrow down the possible ghost types you're dealing with.

Here are some answers I've personally heard while playing:

  • Phasmophobia crucifix : How to use it
  • Phasmophobia smudge sticks : How to use them
  • Phasmophobia ghost types : Each scary spirit listed
  • Phasmophobia Ouija board : Questions you can ask

Phasmophobia New Spirit Box, Use and Commands

Home » Guides » Phasmophobia New Spirit Box, Use and Commands

The Spirit Box in Phasmophobia is one of your ghost-hunting tools used to talk to ghosts and give them commands, and new players always struggle with how to use it. The cause of confusion is usually why the spirit isn’t responding, or if it is, what exactly you’re supposed to do about it. As in, yes, you put Spirit Box into evidence, but what then? In our Phasmophobia Spirit Box – How to Use and Commands guide, we’ll explain how the tool works and provide you with a list of commands you can use to communicate with the ghost.

phasmophobia new spirit box use and commands

How to Use Spirit Box Phasmophobia

UPDATE: There is a new aspect to the Phasmophobia Spirit Box: the color of the light it flashes. If it’s white, it means that you got a positive response, as in: the box registered your command and the ghost responded. If the red LED flashes, the box heard you, but registered no response from the ghost.

To use the Spirit Box in Phasmophobia, the first step is to figure out which room the ghost is haunting. That’s the one where the temperature drops, the EMF starts beeping, etc. The thermometer and EMF reader are generally your best bet for this, but use whatever system you prefer.

Once you know where the ghost is, the person holding the Spirit Box should go inside. Ideally, they should be alone, but it’s not always necessary. Next, turn off the lights (candles can stay lit). Hold the Spirit Box in your hand, and either right-click or press the right trigger to turn it on. Now, ask the ghost one of the questions from the list below, doesn’t matter which one (do not mention the ghost’s name). If you get a response, mark it in the evidence section. If not, the Spirit Box is useless on this hunt; leave it and use other tools instead.

Phasmophobia Spirit Box Commands

In the list below, you’ll find a bunch of different Phasmophobia Spirit Box commands. If you have a spirit that can communicate via the box, you can ask it a bunch of questions if you want to, just to learn more about it. However, you just need to get the one response to confirm Spirit Box and enter it into the evidence. Any response counts, to any question. All that said, the list below might not be complete, but it’ll be more than enough.

  • Give us a sign.
  • Are you there?
  • Do something.
  • Is there anyone here?
  • Make a noise/sound.
  • Open the door.
  • Turn on/off the lights.
  • We mean you no harm.
  • We are friends.
  • Would you like to talk?
  • Where are you?
  • Let us know you are here.
  • Is this your home?
  • Is there anyone with me?
  • Are you male/female?
  • Are you the only one here?
  • Can I ask you a question?
  • Can we speak?
  • Show us (your presence).
  • Talk to me/us.

The Spirit Box is a device used to talk to the ghost. If the ghost responds in-chat, it's considered evidence.

How-To Tutorial for Noobs [ ]

The spirit box requires the player to ask the ghost questions. If it responds in the in-game chat with red text. That is considered evidence. The table of all the possible questions to ask the ghost. NOTE: The player must be inside the ghost room , the room light must be turned off , and the spirit box must be turned on in order to get a response.

Many experienced players found out that they can fabricate creative sentences instead of asking the 'boring questions'. To do this, the players use the prewritten phrases and combine it with other words for example:

  • Hey! are you there ? I Wanna play a hide and seek. If I can't find you after I count down, show me a sign , okay?
  • Are you a man or women who is ____ (insert medical or physical problem) ? Subscribe to ____ to feel 10x better!
  • So….. how old are we pretending to be this year?

You can create some of your own creative sentences. Anything works. It just has to have the boring questions somewhere written in the sentence.

One of the most annoying things about the spirit box is the chat cool down. To by-pass the cool down use /e (your question). For example write /e how old are you there are you a women show a sign. After the /e sentence is entered into roblox, an error message in red text will appear in chat. "You do not own that emote". Ignore the error. The question will still be answered by the spirit box despite the error message .

If the ghost doesn't respond after spamming these questions in-chat, the the ghost does not have spirit box as evidence.

Ghost Types [ ]

The ghosts that have the spirit box evidence are:

  • Poltergeist

Appearance [ ]

The spirit box is a small, rectangular, grey box . The bottom third is a 4 x 3 grid of white buttons. the middle third has a strip that is either black or blue depending if the device is on or off. The top third is what many assume are speakers. At the very top of the spirit box, it has an antenna to detect radio signals.

  • The Spirit Box sometimes triggers EMF 5 evidence, depending on what ghost it is.
  • “Can you write in the book?” used to be a command for the spirit box, until it was removed in 2.10.0.
  • The Spirit Box had an old version
  • the ghost name does not have any affect in-game.

Phasmophobia is a new co-op horror game that released via Steam early access last month, and it’s definitely a good pick if you’re looking for a spooky game to play with your friends this month. Unlike most traditional horror games, this one requires you to have a mic as the ghost you’re hunting is constantly listening to you. Here’s a list of all voice commands and phrases you can use in Phasmophobia.

All Voice Commands and Phrases in Phasmophobia

There are three ways to communicate with the ghost and to try to get a response from it in Phasmophobia: by simply talking as you’re exploring the house, by using the spirit box, and by using the ouija board.

Generally, you’ll want to use the spirit box for evidence to narrow down the ghost types that you’re dealing with. The ouija board can be useful for baiting the ghost into a hunt if you need to complete an optional objective, and can also be used as photo evidence. Finally, generally speaking out loud to try to get a reaction from the ghost could be useful early on in a level when you’re trying to determine where the ghost room is.

General Voice Commands and Phrases

  • Where are you?
  • Do you want us to leave?
  • Give us a sign.
  • Show yourself.
  • Are you here?
  • Who are you?
  • What are you?
  • How old are you?
  • Can you speak?
  • Do something.
  • Talk to me.
  • Talk to us.

Ouija Board

  • How many people have you killed?
  • How long have you been here?
  • How long have you been dead?
  • When did you die?
  • What is your age?
  • How long ago did you die?
  • How many ghosts are here?
  • How many people are here?

In addition to that, it’s worth noting that you should generally refrain from saying the ghost’s name out loud. Doing this will anger the ghost and may provoke it into entering hunting mode. Using swear words and profanity will also anger it, so you should avoid saying stuff like that unless you’re actively trying to trigger a hunt.

Does Cursing Anger the Ghost?

Yes, the ghosts in Phasmophobia actually do react to various curses and swear words. Dropping the F-bomb, or calling the ghost a bitch or bastard can anger it, and cause it to hunt you a bit more aggressively. This shouldn’t make a difference if the hunting mode is already activated, but try not to swear when you’re still in the investigation phase.

Finally, while the ouija board can be a good way to provoke a ghost and make money, each question you ask will lower your sanity. Because of this, take care of how many questions you’re asking, and consider taking turns with your teammates.

That’s all you need to know about the voice commands and phrases you can use in Phasmophobia . Be sure to search for Twinfinite for more tips and information on the game, including how to use smudge sticks , the new roadmap , as well as our picks for the scariest video game characters .

Our Mission: St. Petersburg City Theatre aims to enrich the individual lives and collective spirit of our diverse population through community produced productions and educational experiences.

City Theatre History

Founded as the Sunshine Players in 1925 during St. Petersburg’s big boom years, we became the Players Club in the late 1920’s and St. Petersburg Little Theatre in 1933. The name remained Little Theatre until 2011 when St. Petersburg City Theatre was adopted.

City Theatre was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1937 to promote and create local theatre dedicated to teaching and training non-professional artists of any age. The theatre’s goal of creating a vibrant theatre arts community in the area remains the central focus as it enters its 90 th Season.

Originally, plays were produced only for one or two nights . The first production produced by the Sunshine Players was The Poor Nut, a comedy in three acts by JC Nugent and Elliott Nugent.

In the late 1930’s, an old grist mill on Second Avenue North was purchased . The new facility opened in June 1944. Throughout WWII servicemen both participated in and enjoyed shows at no cost, providing important rest and relaxation to the troops stationed locally.

In the 1950’s, property was purchased at our present location on 31st Street South and was one of the first facilities in the Tampa Bay area to be erected as a theater.  In September 1958, Teahouse of the August Moon became the first production in the new space, and the season was expanded to accommodate six plays.

The 1960’s brought further growth and expansion with the production of City Theatre’s first musical, The Pajama Game along with a major renovation to the space. The costume room and green room were added to the building, and the original screened-in verandah was enclosed to form the lobby.

In 1983, membership celebrated the burning of the mortgage on the property and building . In 1994, the last major renovation took place with a new restroom wing constructed to meet ADA standard.

In 2007 City Theatre expanded its youth and adult programming and instituted The Academy at City Theatre , with a focus on arts education. For decades, City Theatre Currently, The Academy offers classes for youth ages 7- 17.

St. Petersburg City Theatre’s ‘A Christmas Carol: A Change in Gear’

December 12, 2023 by Marilyn Jozwik

the ensemble for 'A Christmas Carol: A Change in Gear' standing in a cluster on stage.

Imagine a cross between Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine .

Imagine no longer and see St. Petersburg City Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol: A Change in Gear .

The show’s steampunk adaptation is the brainchild of the show’s director Kailyn Rosenthal. Additionally, the science fiction sub-genre rooted in the Victorian era of steam-powered machinery is well suited for Dickens’ tale of ghosts and fantasy.

The spirits in this show are like nothing you’ve ever seen. This is where Rosenthal has the most fun with character and costuming. To fit the steampunk style, the spirits are cleverly conceived futuristic creations (as might have been thought of in Victorian days and in the writings of Wells or Jules Verne).

‘A Christmas Carol: A Change in Gear’

There are sounds of gadgets and gizmos ticking and whooshing. Lights flash as a huge backdrop of gears and Roman numerals on an antique clock set the mood.

In the Dickens classic, published in 1843, three spirits visit the miserly Scrooge, played here by Frederick Lien. They show him the sufferings of the poor, especially his employee Bob Cratchit and his large family, scraping by on Bob’s meager pay. The spirits convince Scrooge to change his ways. He awakens on Christmas Day with a kind heart and giving attitude.

The steampunk adaptation works quite well while keeping Dickens’ lovely language intact. Although there are times when the story gets lost in the complex staging.

five people standing in a line against a white wall as fog moves across them.

The Three Spirits

The First Spirit, played by Phineas Slaton, has the steampunk look of a music box ballerina (if you can imagine that!). It moves mechanically to the well-timed sounds. The costume is incredible, and Slaton pulls off the detached character beautifully, an absolute delight to watch.

Allen Coyle opens the second act on his tricked-out bicycle as the Second Spirit. Somehow it is reminiscent of Christopher Lloyd in his DeLorean in Back to the Future . Coyle’s character features a huge wind-up key on his back, showing his time is short. Coyle also has a wonderful turn as Fezziwig.

I especially enjoyed the staging of Scrooge and the Second Spirit visiting the poor. Huddled in deep shadows, the indigent sing carols with a dark, mysterious and ominous quality. It is effective and moving.

Another favorite scene is when Old Joe (Jim Gunning) and chambermaids (Velda Gauthier and Kathryn Pollard) rifle through the effects of the dead Scrooge, mocking him in the process.

While the performances were a bit uneven on opening night, Alan S. Rosenthal as Jacob Marley was wonderful. He commanded the stage as he narrated Dickens’ story. I also enjoyed Taylor Landau as Belle in her scene with young Scrooge, played by Joseph Conte, who also did a nice job as the soundless Third Spirit.

I would have liked to have seen more emotional intensity. Specifically, when Scrooge scoffed at the solicitors, “Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?” as well as with other memorable lines.

Nonetheless, St. Petersburg City Theatre created a fitting and festive alternate universe for Dickens’ timeless story.

The mystery of Rasputin’s murder

#Attractions #Legends #City tour #Museums #Exhibitions #Sightseeing

The Yusupov palace keeps not only magnificent treasures and unique works of art, but also a dark secret of events that may have played an important role in the history of the Russian Empire.

One of the most strange and terrible murders of the early XX century happened in the cellars of the mansion. 17 Dec 1916 Grigory Rasputin, an extraordinary and mysterious person, met his end there. A simple Siberian peasant, rude and uncouth, he not only managed to become a favorite and indispensable advisor of the Royall family, but also actively interfered in the political decisions of the sovereign.

Rasputin and the Royals

There were many of those who were disaffected with the rise of “God’s elder” and his significant influence on the Emperor. For this reason in 1916 a few influential people of the Russian Empire, including prince Felix Yusupov, prepared the murder of Rasputin.

Rasputin was invited to the Yusupov Palace on the Moika river embankment in order to get acquainted with the host’s wife Irina. Here, in the deep basement, Rasputin was poisoned. But cyanide, which was injected into Rasputin’s favorite cakes, didn’t affect him. A direct shot didn’t kill the elder either. Mortally wounded in the chest, the Emperor’s favorite nearly strangled Yusupov and managed to escape. Rasputin even crushed a locked door, and almost left the yard. He was stopped by three shots in the back, and only the fourth bullet in the neck knocked the old man down. After another shot to the head Rasputin was still breathing. The conspirators put the body in the car, took him to the Malaya Nevka river and dropped into the ice hole.

Currently in the basement of the Yusupov Palace there is an exhibition with wax figures that represents the details of the terrible and largely incomprehensible murder.

“Currently in the basement of the Yusupov Palace there is an exhibition with wax figures that represents the details of the terrible and largely incomprehensible murder”

However, the Yusupov Palace bears not only the dark history of Rasputin’s murder. It is also a masterpiece of palace architecture with beautiful examples of residential interiors, partially restored, but for the most part preserved in its original form. The first thing visitors see when they come to Yuspov Palace is the exquisite grand staircase, which brings images of beauties walking up the steps in magnificent dresses and their companions in elegant costumes and striking uniforms. While walking through lounge rooms – and there are several of them in the palace – you seem to hear the laughter of the ladies and restrained voice of their gentlemen that are having rest there. The luxurious main dining-room gives you an impression of the princely family having lunch. In the banquet white column hall, which is the largest room of the Yusupov Palace, you imagine hundreds of dancing couples and hear the music pouring from under the ceiling. There, in a special box, musicians were located. The banquet hall is remarkable not only for its architecture, but also for the amazing acoustics.

Prince Felix Yusupov

Yusupov Palace inferior the Hermitage or Peterhof in luxury and fame, but, according to many feedbacks, attending the palace leaves the indelible mark of St. Petersburg. That’s probably because, unlike the Hermitage and Peterhof, the Yusupov Palace in our days is not perceived as a museum. It seems that the tenants left it only yesterday, and their spirit still lingers within its walls, carrying everyone who appears inside into the era of luxury and intrigues.
