Highly recommend for Old World comfort, charm, and grace. Front desk host and manager Robert bent over backwards to make our stay memorable, welcoming, and inviting. Due to covid-19 they've had to defer some maintenance. When we first arrived we had to switch rooms for a minor window issue. He and his staff went above and beyond to "make it up to us." Robert is very friendly and a fount of local knowledge. Three thumbs up!

Characterful hotel This is a quirky hotel/historical hotel with a lovely homely feel. Our room was spacious and we had a sitting room. It wasn't the best room configuration but we managed to make it work for us. The shower was good, the internet was fast and the breakfast was good. The staff were really friendly too. This is a good option if you want to stay in downtown Silver City!

Just left the Palace hotel in Silver Coty NM, and they tell me that my room is no longer available. It was 5 pm when I tried to check in. I called around 11 am that morning to see if my room was still available and they said yes. I booked the room weeks before. After I learned about the room no longer available, I spoke with the manager Robert. He had a nonchalant attitude and didn't even apologize for putting us in this situation. He did not care that we were in a city without a room. All of the hotels were full. I was totally disappointed in the lack of help from this manager. I do not recommend this hotel due to the unprofessionaliam from management. The least they could have done is call us before we tried to check in. Management did not attempt to problem solve this.

MY FIRST REVIEW ON THIS SOMEHOW DISAPPEARED! Hmmmm. Several of us stayed at the property and saw this sign prominently displayed in the public area. I imagine it will attract some and dissuade others, but if the owners want their politics out in public view - which I think is inappropriate for a hotelier - then potential guests should know it in advance. Let's hope this review doesn't somehow disappear....

palace hotel silver city nm haunted

Just important for folks staying here to know the owners have a large "Make America Great Again" sign displayed prominently in the public area on the first floor off to the left from the main lobby. This may either attract or dissuade different people from staying there, but if the owners feel proud to display their politics, which I think is inappropriate for a hotelier, potential guests should be aware in advance.

Old West downtown type Hotel -- narrow entrance, corridors & rooms. Well maintained, now with mini-fridges. Great base for walking the late 19th century core of Silver City, with its old store fronts, shops & theaters. Park right out front -- one challenge is no elevator. Don't miss walking the neighborhood to see the many tile mosaic displays -- public, commercial and private -- really special. Good jumping off place to access Gila Cliffs National Monument.

You have got to be kidding???? First off let's start with price, if you're going to charge a hundred dollars a night you better have a room worth that price tag. What you get instead is a room that 'sort of' has air conditioning. Two rooms cooled by a window a/c unit not adequate to cool a shoebox, no access to the controls because it's ten feet up in a window and at night it either quit working or was turned off. If you're going to save some money shutting off the a/c at night then you damn well better have a window that can be opened to let in cool air! Second anyone should know there are 0 ground floor rooms and stairs are the ONLY way to get to your room and there are two flights of them....THIS SHOULD BE NOTED ON THEIR WEBSITE WHICH IT IS NOT!! NO 'smoking' rooms available and no balcony for the top floor, yes you will get to travel those stairs every time you want a smoke. Two room suite means one tiny room crammed into a larger room with one shared toilet and sink. And that 'queen bed' is a double. The free breakfast is just toast and cereal, the coffee was decent. No ice machine just a freezer with a 20 lb bag of ice you get to figure out how to open and wrestle with yourself. We were allowed to get a refund for the second night which was considerate because we would never return....ever.

Photo of Gina B.

Spent 4 nights in room 80, a suite. Nice room. AC only in bedroom. 1st night was uncomfortably warm, but the temperature outside decreased so the rest of the stay was nice. This is a historic hotel so don't expect high end frills. You are paying for the atmosphere and location. It's in the heart of historic old town. We walked everywhere. Continental breakfast isn't much. No coffee pot in room which was the worst thing for me. Loved the place and hope to return.

Robert is amazing and everything about this jewel Is charming. I wish we could stay longer.

Photo of Tom P.

Great historic hotel. I had stayed here nearly 10 years ago and came back to revisit. It was a little chilly, but probably much warmer than it was when first opened. I like that it is really a historic experience and not like new designed hotels. I'll stay here again for sure.

Photo of Amy S.

One of the most delightful finds during our recent travels (both Silver City, and the Palace Hotel)! We were getting into town late, but they offered to give us access, even though there wouldn't be anyone on duty by that time. Incredibly trusting of them. Met owners the following morning, after generous breakfast. Truly like a lovely European place, or B&B in the States. If you're looking for a chain hotel, where every room is identical, this is NOT the place for you. It was charming, clean, and run by very lovely people. Would recommend it highly, Very happy experience.

Palace Hotel in new hands after 30 years

(Press Staff Photo by C.P. Thompson) Steve Aragon works at the Palace Hotel on Tuesday. Paul Aragon, Steve’s brother, is the new owner of the hotel, formerly owned by Nancy Johnson for 30 years.

After three decades at the Palace Hotel on Broadway in downtown Silver City, Nancy Johnson said goodbye to her long-term business late last month, passing ownership to Paul Aragon, who has been in the hotel business nearly all his life.

According to the hotel’s website, the building dates back to 1882. It once was the Meredith and Ailman bank building — built by the original owner of the Silver City Museum’s home and his partner — and the second floor became the Palace Hotel in March 1900, first owned by Max Shutz.

In November 1989, Johnson and her late husband, Cal Thompson, purchased the building from the Bingaman family, who were then renting a few of the hotel rooms as low-income apartments. They believed it was an interesting project, Johnson said, and were intrigued with historic preservation, which is why they took on the then-defunct hotel.

“We refurbished it during our renovations and opened it up for business,” Johnson said

Johnson said it took nine months to refurbish the building, and the hotel was finally reopened in July 1990, with help from the MainStreet Project and New Mexico Historic Preservation Office.

Johnson said that she sold the hotel because she wanted to spend more time with her children and grandchildren.

“I’ve been thinking about it for a few years,” Johnson said of her decision to sell. The building had been listed for sale with Smith Real Estate.

Paul Aragon said he visited the neighboring Murray Hotel last June, when he was considering the purchase of that hotel. The Murray was purchased last November by a partnership led by Silver City residents Christine Rickman and her husband, Michael Metcalf. While Aragon said the Murray was a great property, it didn’t quite catch his eye.

“I was walking to dinner from the Murray Hotel, and I just walked by this door … and I go, ‘That’s a hotel,’” he said. “I walked in and I talked to the person [at the front desk]. I said, ‘Would this hotel happen to be for sale?’”

Paul was put into contact with Johnson, and they worked on a deal for about four months. The deal was closed in late February, said Steve Aragon, the new general manager of the Palace, and Paul’s brother.

Paul said he was part of the state’s first hospitality management school at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas while he was in college, which would have been in the early ’80s. He started investing in hotels when he was 22, and later began buying properties. Early in his career, he worked for a company called Regent Hotels International, through which he worked all over the world.

“I got tired of the travel,” Paul said. “I got tired of the corporate structure, sort of, and decided to try to start venturing out on my own. So I bought small properties, mostly in New Mexico, and just developed them.”

Paul currently has two properties — the Palace Hotel and the Sunshine Motel in Las Vegas, N.M. He also oversees a property in Rociada, in the mountains between Las Vegas and Taos, which has a golf course, hotel, restaurants and bars.

“I loved what [Johnson] did to the hotel. The biggest change we’re going to make is we’re going to put in heating and cooling” for each room, Paul said. “We’re going to become part of the community, in the sense that we’re going to be at every meaningful event that helps promote small business in Silver City.”

Paul said that all staff will remain at the Palace Hotel, many of whom have been there for many years. Steve, a former Albuquerque teacher, is “an addition” to the staff. He said that he has already purchased some dryers and other “tools” for the staff.

“The staff that I have is wonderful,” Steve said. “The staff here is great, and we aren’t looking to get rid of anyone.”

Paul said he is a believer in small communities.

“I’ve always worked with small cities in New Mexico,” he said. “There’s not a lot of people that go out and look at Silver City … or smaller cities as an opportunity, and I do. Because I think we can have a greater impact in a smaller city than if I went and bought a hotel in the middle of Albuquerque.”

The Palace Hotel is located at 106 W. Broadway and can be reached at 388-1811. Room rates range from $64 to $130 per night, Steve said. The hotel website is silvercitypalacehotel.com.

How guest reviews work

Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. Guests can also give separate subscores in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free WiFi. Guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently – there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Guidelines and Standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).
