RECOMMENDED WATCHING: Rolex Yacht-Master Vs. Omega Seamaster
Rolex vs. Omega is an age-old debate that has seemingly raged since time immemorial in the horological community. However, the watches in question have always been the Rolex Submariner vying against the Omega Seamaster, or the Rolex Daytona vs. the Omega Speedmaster. And while the arguments for and against these aforementioned watches could go on forever, the chaps over at Watchfinder & Co. have posited a new and exciting point of contention among the two legacy watchmakers: Yacht-Master vs. Seamaster.
More specifically the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Ref. 226659 has been pitted against one of Omega’s most recent additions to its famed dive watch — the Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300M 43.5 MM ref. 210.92.44.20.01.001.
It’s a pretty tough comparison. On the one hand, the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 was the belle of the ball upon its unveiling at Baselworld 2019 … and it’s easy to understand why — replete with its unique 42mm, solid 18k white gold case with matt Cerachrom bezel and Oysterflex bracelet, the “yachty” is seriously hot property. However, the new Seamaster Professional Diver 300M 43.5mm is nothing short of mesmerising, thanks to its unique blend of ceramic case, grade 5 titanium bezel with black ceramic insert and white enamel diving scale and laser-engraved, brushed ceramic dial.
If you’ve got the time, this excellent video is definitely worth a watch — the macro footage on offer is truly exceptional. Enjoy.

The Best Affordable Rolex Alternative Watches

In the watch world, there is no name on a dial that carries nearly as much cachet as Rolex. Omega may have gone to the moon, Patek Philippe may have more prestige, and Richard Mille may be the new favorite of rappers and pro athletes, but none of these brands are Rolex. The Crown accounted for a quarter of all Swiss watch sales in 2020, a year that saw them reduce their production by choice. Everybody wants a Rolex, but due to their high price and, for some models, their scarcity, not everybody can get one. But there are Rolex alternatives you can actually afford out there, and this guide will show you exactly what they are.
Now, when we say something is an affordable Rolex alternative, that does not mean we’re offering you watches that are in any way equal to a Rolex. Watches are like any other industry in that, for the most part, you get what you pay for. The watches we’re recommending in this guide are alternatives to Rolex because of their similar styling and functionality, not because they possess the same level of quality. It’s like with cars. You can suggest a C8 Corvette as an affordable alternative to a Ferrari F8 Tributo, and you’d be right to do so! The mid-engined Corvette is a great car that offers some of the thrill, looks, and speed of a Ferrari — but it ain’t a Ferrari. Look at this guide through the same lens and you’ll be all set. So now, let’s get to some Rolex alternatives you can actually afford.
Article Overview
What’s So Special About Rolex?
A word on homages, rolex explorer, halios universa, monta triumph, vaer s3 tradition black quartz, rolex submariner, orient kamasu, oris aquis date, christopher ward c60 trident pro 300, rolex gmt master ii, zodiac sea wolf gmt “crystal” topper edition, lorier hyperion, tudor black bay gmt, rolex daytona, ball engineer ii navigator world time chronograph, le jour rally monte-carlo, dan henry 1962, rolex day-date, seiko sur434, tissot gentleman powermatic 80 silicium solid 18k gold bezel, hamilton jazzmaster day-date auto, the best affordable alternatives to iconic luxury watches.
There are some who’ll say that Rolex is overrated, and there may be some truth to that. A small handful of companies arguably put out better products at lower prices, and the perception of Rolex as the be-all and end-all of luxury watches is a pretty tired trope. But Rolex’s reputation didn’t materialize out of thin air. The company has earned their spot as one of the world’s most trusted brands, and they’ve done so through three distinct avenues.
History: When it comes to Swiss watch brands , Rolex is a young pup. The brand didn’t debut until 1905, decades or, in several cases, over a century after most other Swiss watchmakers. But they really hit the ground running and their innovation led them to the top of the market in a remarkably short period of time. In 1914, they became the first wristwatch to earn a Class A Chronometer certification. In 1926, the Rolex Oyster became the first “waterproof” watch. In 1931, they created the Perpetual Movement — the world’s first fully-winding automatic movement wristwatch movement. In 1945, Rolex released the Datejust, the first watch where the date automatically changed over at midnight. We haven’t even gotten to the invention of Rolex’s most-iconic models yet, but you get the point. The brand changed wristwatches in a big way many, many times, and their reputation grew because of it.
Quality: You may believe they’re overrated or overpriced, but Rolex does not make junk and they never have. If you buy a Rolex watch, it’s likely to outlive you (provided you take care of it). And they haven’t slacked on the robustness of their offerings as they’ve moved into more of a luxury space in recent years, either. Rolex has a dedicated lab where they, essentially, beat the snot out of their watches in every way imaginable. A variety of machines perform over 20 different drop tests, water-resistant watches are checked for security at greater depths than it says on the dial, and one machine is able to simulate years of wear in a week to see how the watch holds up. These tests, combined with the COSC chronometer certification, add up to Rolex’s exclusive Superlative Chronometer certification. Backed by a five-year guarantee, it’s the company’s seal that you’re getting a product of the highest quality.
Marketing: As impressive as Rolex’s history and quality are, the one aspect of the brand that is most responsible for its status is its marketing. When looking at the entire history of the brand, one could make the argument that no brand in any industry has been as consistently good at marketing itself as Rolex. Right from the start, when founder Hans Wilsdorf chose the nonsense name “Rolex” for his brand because it looked good on a dial and was easily pronounceable in any language, Rolex has had a knack for convincing the public of its superiority. One bit of genius was the brand displaying the first Oyster watches in store windows submerged in fish bowls to show their waterproofness. Another was the brand associating its watches with greatness through early brand ambassadors. Mercedes Gleitze wore a Rolex when she swam the English Channel in 1927, Sir Malcolm Campbell wore one when he broke the land speed record in 1933, and Sir Edmund Hillary wore a Rolex Explorer when he climbed to the top of Mount Everest in 1953. Except he didn’t. Hillary had a prototype of the Explorer that Rolex provided for the mission, but he actually wore a Smiths watch for his ascent. But because Rolex’s marketing machine was so well-oiled, they were able to capitalize on the feat and associate the Explorer with Everest — an association that persists to this day, while Smiths faded away long ago. Say what you will about Rolex, there is no denying their prowess as a marketing tour de force.
Since Rolex makes the most popular watches in the world, it stands to reason that other companies would make copies of their watches. And they do. A lot . While we have no data to back this up, we’re pretty confident in saying that Rolex is the most cloned watch brand in the world. Many of these clones are replica watches; fake Rolexes that say Rolex on the dial and try to pass themselves off as the real deal. Just about everyone agrees that replica watches are bad — they’re basically forgeries. But when you come to the subject of homage watches, things get a little trickier.
Homage watches are watches that are meant to look like another watch but that don’t try to pass themselves off as such. For instance, many brands make watches that are almost indistinguishable from a Submariner, but they don’t say “Rolex” or “Submariner” anywhere on them. Homage watches sometimes tweak the formula a little, but they are always created with the intention of invoking a more expensive watch. Many watch enthusiasts have no problem with homage watches, but many others do. And because they’re such a lightning rod for controversy within the watch community, we won’t be recommending any homage watches in this guide.
It may not have actually been worn on Everest by Hillary, but the Explorer is still an icon. Recently reduced back to its original 36mm case size, the Explorer maintains its reputation as the ultimate everyday watch . Its simple and symmetrical good looks can be dressed up or down, it’s robust enough to handle any adventure you come across, and its design is timeless. And while it’s one of the most affordable models Rolex makes, it’s still an expensive watch. But obviously, we have a solution for that.
Case Size: 36mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 100m
The Alternatives
Good: In many ways, Vancouver-based Halios is basically the Rolex of microbrands. Their quality is best-in-class, their models sell out immediately and are often resold on the secondhand market for profit, and they have legions of very dedicated fans. And on their latest model, the Rolex comparisons are even more apt. With vaguely Explorer-like styling thanks to its cardinal Arabic indices and no-date movement, the Universa is a highly attractive and versatile sports watch. With its tall box sapphire crystal and Swiss-made hand-wound movement, the Universa at first feels like a vintage-style watch . But then you get to that angular case and brilliantly-finished flat link bracelet with an ingenious push-button quick-adjust clasp, and it becomes thrillingly modern. Putting it all together, we’re not exactly sure how to classify the Universa, but we know we definitely want one.
Case Size: 38mm Movement: Manual-Wind Water Resistance: 100m
Better: St. Louis-based Monta is another brand that draws comparisons to the Crown, and it’s easy to see why. After all, the brand was founded by the same guys who own Everest Bands, makers of the best aftermarket Rolex rubber straps, and all of their watches are Swiss-made and finished to a luxury level. The Triumph is their most inexpensive watch, and it’s pretty much a bargain version of a modern Explorer. Applied cardinal indices, 150m water resistance, and a galvanized matte-finished dial bring the field watch cred, while the rhodium-plated hands, micro-adjust clasp, and blue-glowing BGW9 Super-LumiNova add a touch of class.
Case Size: 38.5mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 150m
Best: A part of L.A.-based microbrand Vaer’s S3 collection, the Tradition field watch definitely has the looks to match its name. While not an homage, the watch’s triangle at 12 and 3-6-9 layout on a black dial certainly recall the most iconic iteration of the Explorer, the ref. 1016. As do its conservative 36mm case size, 100m water resistance, fauxtina lume, and three-link Oyster-style bracelet. But unlike a 1016 Explorer, you’re also getting a nearly-scratchproof sapphire crystal, as well as an American-made movement and American assembly, making this one of the most red, white, and blue watches on the market.
Case Size: 36mm Movement: Quartz Water Resistance: 100m
Even if you don’t know anything about watches, you could probably pick a Submariner out of a lineup. Arguably the most recognizable watch in the world — and almost certainly the most imitated — the Sub debuted in 1953 alongside the other first modern divers, the Blancpain Fifty-Fathoms and Zodiac Sea Wolf, and it remains the prototypical diver today. Looking flawless with everything from a wetsuit to a T-shirt and jeans to a tuxedo, the Submariner is the one watch that just about everyone wants in their collection. But with their prices growing almost by the day, it’s not as easy to nab one as it used to be.
Case Size: 41mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 300m
Good: When you’re looking at divers under $300, you’re going to come across a lot of Orients. That’s because the well-established Japanese brand offers a ton of bang for your buck, and they’ve been doing it for decades. The Kamasu is arguably their best diver ever with a sapphire crystal, 200m water resistance, and in-house automatic movement that hacks and hand-winds. But as every Sub fan knows, the appeal of the world’s most famous watch goes well beyond the shore and is partly owed to the fact that it looks great in any situation. Thankfully for the Kamasu, the budget diver’s familiar-yet-original good looks ensure that it’ll be just as versatile.
Case Size: 41.8mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 200m
Better: Oris is one of the few remaining heritage Swiss watchmakers that hasn’t been gobbled up by some multinational conglomerate, and with the watches they’ve been churning out lately, we don’t see them in danger of losing their independence anytime soon. The Aquis is the brand’s top-selling model line, and it’s pretty obvious why that is. As a robust casually-styled modern diver, it’s basically the Submariner of the sub-$4,000 price range , and there’s nary a watch collector alive who wouldn’t welcome one into their watchbox. With a ceramic bezel, buckets of lume, 300m water resistance, and luxury-level fit and finish, the differences between this and the Rolex aren’t as great as you’d think.
Case Size: 41.5mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 300m
Best: Pretty much the consensus best diver you can get for around a grand, the latest iteration of Christopher Ward’s most popular model has charted an exciting new course for the London-based brand. The Swiss-made Trident is a true luxury watch masquerading as an affordable diver, as it’s loaded with high-end features. Diamond-polished indices, dual-finished hands, an AR-coated sapphire crystal, 300m water resistance, a highly-detailed “light-catcher” case, and the glossy polished dial are all top-notch, but most impressive of all is the fully-lumed ceramic bezel that’s been re-engineered to sound and feel better than any other bezel on the market (except one).
Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 300m
In 1954, Rolex created a new segment by inventing the first watch to track two timezones with a fourth hand: the GMT Master. The watch was made at the request of Pan Am Airways, who wanted a watch their pilots could use to track two timezones on then-new long-haul international flights. The current iteration, the GMT Master II, remains the gold standard for travel watches, especially in its original colorway with the blue and red bezel affectionately called the “Pepsi.” New Pepsi bezel versions are impossible to buy new unless you promise your firstborn son to your local authorized dealer, and they’re currently going for double the retail price on the secondhand market. Yeah, good luck with that. Here are some other options.
Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic GMT Water Resistance: 100m
Good: We certainly don’t have anything against microbrands who fashion their watches after vintage luxury models — after all, there are several on this list. But for our money, it’s always preferable when a watch brand is able to back up their offerings with some real history. That’s what Zodiac is doing here with the latest limited edition of their Sea Wolf GMT. This gorgeous “Crystal Pepsi” GMT is a modern-day reissue of a Zodiac Aerospace GMT from the 1960s. One of the earliest GMT watches, the Aerospace was sporting Pepsi bezels before almost every other watchmaker not named Rolex, and now they’re bringing the look back in a stunning modern luxury watch that won’t break the bank.
Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic GMT Water Resistance: 200m
Better: New York-based microbrand Lorier has one of the most consistent and quickly-established design languages we’ve ever seen. Despite 2021 only marking the company’s third year of existence, they already have a catalog full of iconic models that are distinctly Lorier. Their latest (and arguably greatest) is the Hyperion, a vintage-style GMT that goes the extra mile to try and recapture the feel of the very first Rolex GMT Master from the 1950s. To do so, Lorier not only features an old-school domed plexiglass crystal (like all of their other watches), but they’ve also included a lumed plexiglass bezel to mimic the radium-lit bakelite bezel on the original Rolex. C’est magnifique.
Case Size: 39mm Movement: Automatic GMT Water Resistance: 100m
Best: At nearly $4,000 — and slightly over that on the steel bracelet — the Black Bay GMT is by far the least affordable of the “affordable” watches on this list. But affordability is relative and, compared to what you’re going to pay for a Rolex GMT, the Tudor GMT is practically free. This is, after all, a legitimate luxury watch with a Pepsi bezel, vintage styling, and a “true GMT” in-house movement featuring an independently-adjustable hour hand. And since it happens to be made by Rolex’s sister company, that makes this the closest you’ll realistically get to purchasing a Rolex GMT for under ten grand.
Case Size: 41mm Movement: Automatic GMT Water Resistance: 200m
The Daytona is one of the strangest Rolex models, as its journey to its current status at the height of the brand’s catalog certainly didn’t happen overnight. Debuting as a racing chronograph in 1963, the Daytona was fairly unpopular for a pretty long time. But the rising tide of interest in vintage models in recent years — especially examples that sport an exotic dial like those that was famously worn by Paul Newman — has lifted all Daytona models. Vintage Daytonas now account for two of the top-three highest-priced watches ever sold at auction, and the modern models are arguably the hottest watch in the world at this moment. In other words, you’re probably not getting one. Here’s what to get instead.
Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic Chronograph Water Resistance: 100m
Good: Compared to most of the other “affordable” brands on this list, Ball certainly plays more in the luxury sandbox. But compared to the five-figure Daytona, this sub-$4,000 watch is a steal. It may ditch the tachymeter bezel in favor of a world timer, but like the Rolex, it does feature a tapering center-polished stainless steel bracelet and a Swiss-made chronometer-certified automatic chronograph movement. But since it’s a Ball and not a Rolex, you’re also getting a tritium gas tube lume that requires no charge.
Case Size: 44mm Movement: Automatic Chronograph Water Resistance: 50m
Better: In the 1960s, Le Jour was a watchmaker that re-cased models from the likes of Yema and Heuer under their own brand name, but the name went away during the quartz crisis in the 1980s. Now, Le Jour is back and is reissuing modern versions of its classic mid-century models. However, this Rally Monte-Carlo is the firm’s go at a modern-forward design. It’s a gorgeous racing chronograph with a dash of retro charm and all the modern amenities you’d expect, like an AR-coated sapphire crystal and a ribbed white dial with the offset tricompax display.
Best: Esteemed watch collector Dan Henry is one of the world’s greatest resources when it comes to knowledge of vintage watches, and thankfully for the rest of us, he’s sharing his expertise through his namesake affordable microbrand. Henry’s 1962 chronograph was fashioned after the racing chronographs of the early ‘60s, including, presumably, the Daytona. With a matte panda dial, black tachymeter bezel, and twisted lugs, the 1962 is just about the most attractive chronograph you can find for under 300 bucks.
Case Size: 39mm Movement: Quartz Chronograph Water Resistance: 50m
All of the other Rolex watches on this list are steel sports watches, and though they were always on the higher end, they weren’t originally luxury watches and could have conceivably been purchased by regular old working stiffs once upon a time. But the Day-Date is different. This was always Rolex’s luxury model, and it’s only ever been offered in precious metal — gold or platinum . It’s nicknamed “The President” because LBJ wore one on the cover of Time magazine, and ever since then it’s been associated with world leaders, wealth, and success (Alec Baldwin’s watch in Glengarry Glen Ross ? That’s a Day-Date). And since you’re probably not running a country or a Fortune 500 company, you could probably use a watch that costs less than your car.
Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 100m
Good: Seiko is a pretty wild watch company, as they produce everything from sub-$100 watches to Grand Seikos that cost tens of thousands. This example is certainly from the lower end of Seiko’s offerings, but it’s still a fun (if slightly- homagey ) Rolex stand-in. Coming across like a hybrid between a Day-Date and another Rolex icon, the Datejust, this quartz Seiko comes with a minimalist bezel, Jubilee-style bracelet, stick hands and indices, a day-date complication, and most noticeably, gold-tone finishing everywhere you look.
Case Size: 36.9mm Movement: Quartz Water Resistance: 30m
Better: Tissot’s fanciest watch is pretty much a baby Rolex. The Gentleman’s classic styling was pretty clearly inspired by the Crown, and it backs up its looks with some impressive details. The pseudo-in-house movement from Swatch Group partner ETA boasts an 80-hour power reserve and an anti-magnetic silicon hairspring, the finishing is top-notch, and most impressive of all, the bezel is made from solid 18K gold. Not gold-plated. Not gold PVD-coated. Solid. Gold. That’s unheard of at this price point, and it makes the Gentleman an even more impressive stand-in for the Day-Date — even if it is lacking the day complication.
Best: Part of Hamilton’s dressy Jazzmaster line, the Day-Date Auto offers classic styling, solid specs, and a handy day-date complication. The “day” portion even sits above the 12 marker like on the Rolex , while the date is located at 6, offering up better symmetry compared to its far-pricier friend. The watch houses Hamilton’s H40 movement — based on the ETA 2834-2 — which has an impressive 80-hour power reserve, while the case and bracelet feature a nicely executed mix of brushed and polished finishes.
Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 50m
As we touched on, Rolex is not the only high-end watch brand worth considering. There are plenty of other brands that make watches that are just as good and just as iconic, like Omega, Patek, and Audemars Piguet. So if you’re wondering where you can score cheaper stand-ins for some of their offerings (in addition to more Rolex alternatives), take a look at our guide to the best affordable alternatives to iconic luxury watches .

8 Rolex GMT-Master II Alternatives
The Rolex GMT-Master II is arguably one of the most sought-after watches in the world. It’s one of only a few pieces that can be considered a sizable investment, as the demand for this model has grown consistently over time.
However, with a price tag north of $30,000 to more than $60,000 and a growing number of Rolex collectors snatching them off the market, the timepiece becomes increasingly harder to find. Although an iconic watch, there are plenty of more affordable alternatives to the Rolex GMT-Master II.
To give you an idea of some of the best alternatives to the Rolex GMT-Master II, here are a few options we provide at Bob’s Watches that won’t break the bank, while still giving you the look and feel of the real thing.
1. Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Co-Axial GMT
The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Co-Axial GMT is the perfect alternative to the Rolex GMT-Master II. This watch has a similar look and feel as the Rolex, with a stainless steel case and bracelet that comes in black. It also features a black dial with white hands and hour markers, and has both a 24-hour hand and date window at 3 o’clock. The only difference between these two watches is that the Omega Seamaster uses automatic movement instead of quartz.
It is a famous option for many water enthusiasts as it offers an incredible water resistance of up to a depth of 600 meters (over 2,000 feet). The stainless steel deployant clasp is also an advantage, as it makes it easy to put on and take off.
At Bob’s Watches, you can get this beautiful watch for only $7,595. This watch is also authenticated which ensures you are buying a genuine model.
2. Rolex Explorer II Ref 216570 ‘Polar’ White Dial
For some, a watch is more than just a timepiece. It’s a statement and an accessory that reflects your personality and style. The Rolex Explorer II Ref 216570 ‘Polar’ White Dial can do this and more. This stunning timepiece has a stainless steel case with a white dial and stainless steel bezel.
Though some may question, why not go for GMT-Master II? Well, the answer is simple. The Rolex Explorer II Ref 216570 ‘Polar’ White Dial is a classic and timeless watch that can be worn with anything. It works well in both formal and casual situations and would make an excellent addition to any man’s collection.
Moreover, this watch doesn’t undergo too much design modification which regains its original look after years. That means it hasn’t lost its charm as well as the overall aesthetics that everyone loved about it when it was first released.
When it comes to features, the Rolex Explorer II offers a stainless steel oyster bracelet with a folding oyster clasp which provides the ultimate comfort. Another notable feature of the watch is its 42mm case with an improved Oystersteel finish and longer-lasting lume on the Maxi dial.
Just like other Rolex watches, this watch proves to be not only a good collector’s item, but a hefty investment as well.
3. Tudor Black Bay GMT – 79830RB
Tudor is also an exceptional brand of luxury watches that provides a wide range of timepieces that suit many tastes. The Tudor Black Bay GMT is one of the most popular watches on the market. It also features the automatic self-winding Tudor caliber MT5652 movement combined with black with luminous hour markers and snowflake hands with a date window at 3 o’clock. It also has a 24-hour GMT hand, which is the most attractive feature of this watch.
The watch has a brown leather strap steel bracelet with stainless steel folding clasp and safety catch to make it more secure on your wrist. Overview of the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II
The Rolex Yacht-Master range encapsulates luxury and precision in a line of nautically inspired timepieces. Introduced in 1992, this Rolex watch borrows heavily from the Submariner series. The original Yacht-Master- the ref. 16628 with a 40mm Yellow Gold case, Cyclops lens over the date, triple lock crown, and Oyster bracelet- was modeled after the first ever Submariner- ref. 16610- which has a 40mm stainless steel case.
They both used the Caliber 3135 movement!
The tool watch gained traction with time, coming in various case, material, and bracelet options, as we shall see shortly. It’s no wonder it’s among Rolex’s most varied pieces in the Professional series.
Meanwhile, Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master II more than a decade later in 2007. It’s a watch tailored to the needs of professional sailors with its innovative regatta chronograph.
Housed in a more robust 44mm Oyster case, it leveraged Rolex’s expertise in precision and functionality, offering a programmable countdown with mechanical memory for yacht racing. Distinguishing itself from its predecessor, it brought a new level of technical sophistication to the yachting world.
Design Characteristics
The Yacht-Master line portrays the typical design layout of Rolex sports watches, with an Oyster case (that’s water-resistant to 100m), a Twin-lock winding crown on the side of the case for setting the time and date and winding the movement manually, lume-filled Mercedes-style hands and hour markers, and a date function at three o’clock that’s amplified by a Cyclops magnifier lens on the crystal.
On the other hand, the Yacht-Master II takes on a more daring design, featuring a larger Oyster case (water-resistant to 100m) with a Triplock winding crown and chronograph pushers for operating the regatta chronograph, a busier dial with a programmable countdown feature (1 to 10 minutes), and a special Ring Command bezel that’s also present in Rolex’s Sky-Dweller collection .
Interestingly, the Yacht-Master II and Sky-Dweller are some of Rolex’s most complicated watches for now.
The Yacht-Master comes in various case options, namely 29mm (discontinued), 35mm (discontinued), 37mm (Rolex Yacht-Master ref. 268621), 40mm (Rolex Yacht-Master ref. 126622), and 42mm (Rolex Yacht-Master Oysterflex ref. 226659).
In terms of materials, Rolex has utilized several precious metals in the collection:
Yellow Gold
Stainless steel and Yellow Gold (Yellow Rolesor)
Stainless steel with a Platinum bezel (Rolesium)
Everose Gold (a patented proprietary Rose Gold alloy)
Stainless steel and Everose Gold (Everose Rolesor)
In contrast, the Yacht-Master II is only available in a 44mm case size. It’s available in fewer material alternatives:
Stainless steel with a blue ceramic Cerachrom bezel
Stainless steel and Everose Gold with a blue ceramic Cerachrom bezel
White Gold with a Platinum bezel (discontinued)
Yellow gold with a blue Cerachrom bezel
Bezels
The two watches have a bidirectional rotatable bezel that’s integral for tracking sailing time intervals. The difference comes in their designs.
The Yacht-Master has a bezel crafted from gold or platinum. This rotating bezel has raised numerals and 60-minute graduations. Plus, it operates independently from the watch’s inner mechanism.
The Yacht-Master offers a more noticeable Ring Command bezel with the ‘YACHT-MASTER II’ inscription and molded 1-10 numerals in varying colors depending on the materials used. The Yacht-Master II’s bezel is connected to the movement, and its wearers use it to operate the regatta chronograph function.
The watches’ dials are well-suited for their respective purposes.
The Yacht-Master has a simpler dial design, with Mercedes-style hands and round/triangle/rectangle or gem-set hour markers. Rolex has used several luminous materials on these excellent luxury watches over the years:
SuperLumiNova
Chromalight
The Yacht-Master II has a more detailed and functional dial with slimmer hands decorated with Chromalight lume, a red arrow-tipped hand, a central chronograph hand, square-shaped hour markers, a countdown function with mechanical memory that gracefully curves from 8 to 4 o’clock, and a running seconds subdial at 6 o’clock.
The red arrow-tipped hand shows how much time is left in the countdown. Meanwhile, the central chronograph hand can fly back or fly forward to its starting position while in motion, and the countdown function allows skippers to sync it on the fly to match the official race countdown (it’s the first in the world, BTW).
Note: The Yacht-Master II had square hour markers and straight baton-shaped hands from 2007 to 2017.
2017 welcomed several changes: an inverted triangle at 12 o’clock, a rectangular hour marker at six o’clock, and a Mercedes-style hour hand to offer more lume and enable easier differentiation from the minute hand.
Bracelets and Clasps
Rolex equips the Yacht-Master with Oyster and Oysterflex bracelets. The three-piece Oyster offers classic luxury and sturdy comfort and is finished with a high polish or brushed look. It also has a secure Folding Oysterlock safety clasp with Rolex Glidelock extension system that ensures the watch remains fastened around the wrist.
As for the Oysterflex bracelet , it’s a black strap crafted from a flexible Titanium and nickel alloy metal blade at its core and is clad in a high-density elastomer. It also boasts a tiered design that raises the timepiece away from the wrist and a Folding Oysterlock safety clasp with Rolex Glidelock extension system.
The YachtMaster II also features an Oyster bracelet, typically equipped with the Rolex Glidelock system, allowing fine adjustments and reflecting its more technical and sporty heritage.
Caliber Comparison
The Rolex Yacht-Master lineup features various movements, with the Yacht-Master 37mm housing a self-winding Caliber 2236 movement, the same movement used in Datejust 36 and Datejust 41 timepieces . It has 31 jewels, a 55-hour power reserve, and a 28,800vph frequency.
Meanwhile, the 40mm and 42mm watches utilize the Caliber 3235, a well-respected automatic movement recognized for its reliability. This 31-jewel movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (vph) and offers a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.
In contrast, the Yacht-Master II is equipped with the self-winding Caliber 4161, a chronograph movement specifically developed for this model’s unique regatta countdown function. It has 48 jewels, a 72-hour power reserve, and a 28,800vph frequency.

Germany gets late goal to draw 1-1 with Switzerland to finish top of Euro 2024 group
Germany found a stoppage-time goal from substitute Niclas Fullkrug to draw 1-1 with Switzerland on Sunday and ensure the host nation finished top of its group.
Fullkrug rose high in a crowded penalty area to head into the far corner of the net past Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer from a cross by another substitute, David Raum.
Switzerland had impressed while protecting a 28th-minute goal from Dan Ndoye's clever volleyed shot.
The point for each team ensured Germany finished top and Switzerland second in Group A. Hungary took third place in the standings with an even later stoppage-time goal to beat Scotland 1-0 in Stuttgart.

Germany now goes to Dortmund for a round of 16 game Saturday against the runner-up in Group C, which is currently led by England. Germany's opponent would be Denmark according to the current standings before the final round of Group C games on Tuesday.
Switzerland heads to the Olympic Stadium in Berlin to open the round of 16 on Saturday against the runner-up in Group B, likely Italy or Croatia. They meet Monday in their decisive group game.
Switzerland's goal was made in Bologna, the upstart Italian club that has qualified for its first Champions League entry next season.
Ndoye timed his run to meet a floated pass across the goalmouth from his Bologna teammate Remo Freuler. The attack began when Fabian Rieder, making his first start since the 2022 World Cup, won the ball in the German half and then fed Freuler.
Top sports headlines, all in one place
A video review had denied Germany taking the lead in the 17th. Robert Andrich's long-range shot bounced up and over the dive of Sommer, but the VAR team alerted Italian referee Daniele Orsato to an earlier foul in the goalmouth by Jamal Musiala.
The much-criticized Waldstadion playing surface behaved better Sunday and the roof stayed closed to protect it though no more rain is forecast for at least five days.
The turf cut up during both previous Euro 2024 games in Frankfurt. It has seemed not to bed in properly since being laid in November after the stadium hosted two NFL games.

Late actor Donald Sutherland was a quiet superfan of the Montreal Expos
FILE - Actor Donald Sutherland appears at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Oct. 13, 2017. Sutherland, the towering Canadian actor whose career spanned “M.A.S.H.” to “The Hunger Games,” has died at 88. (Photo by Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP, File)

Well before the celebrity superfan became a trend in the sports world, Donald Sutherland was in on the ground floor with a casual style all his own.
The Canadian actor — who died Thursday at age 88 — was a big supporter of the Montreal Expos during their time in the National League.
“We knew he was a superfan, he was always seated on the third-base side of Olympic Stadium, just about 10 rows from the field,” said longtime sports writer and former Expos PR chief Richard Griffin.
“He made his movie schedule and he made his summer schedule around the Expos’ schedule.”
Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Sutherland grew up in Nova Scotia and studied at the University of Toronto. He later attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art to study acting.
Sutherland became a respected character actor and went on to appear in dozens of films, including “Ordinary People,” “Animal House” and “The Hunger Games.”
The Expos, meanwhile, arrived in 1969 as a Major League Baseball expansion franchise. Sutherland, who had a home in Quebec’s Eastern Townships, gravitated to the team “immediately,” Griffin said.
“He had attained stardom by that time and (coupled) with his love of the game, it gave him the opportunity to be a low-key (supporter),” he said.
The actor had a yacht on the West Coast and would often take in the Expos’ California road swings through Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco, Griffin said.
“He wanted to be behind the scenes,” Griffin said. “He didn’t want to be the story, he wanted to watch the story unfold.”
Serge Touchette covered the Expos for nearly 30 years for Le Journal de Montreal but never got the chance to talk to Sutherland.
“He didn’t want to be interviewed back then,” Touchette said via text message. “We tried many times but we struck out. Too bad because it would have been a great story.”
A high point for the Expos came in October 1981 when the team finally qualified for the postseason. Sutherland was there as Montreal edged the New York Mets 5-4 to secure a playoff berth after a strike-interrupted season.
“I think our travelling secretary had to drag Donald at Shea Stadium into the clubhouse,” Griffin recalled. “He didn’t want to be a part of the picture. So when people think about celebrity fans, they think about people trying to be a part of it. He never did.”
NBC cameras captured Sutherland in the crowd as Montreal played the Philadelphia Phillies on the network’s Game of the Week in May 1983.
“This is one of the biggest of all Expos fans: Donald Sutherland,” commentator Bob Costas said on the broadcast. “This is not the kind of celebrity who shows up at a World Series game and makes sure he gets a seat by the TV camera. This is a legitimate fan.”
For the club’s 20th anniversary in 1989, Sutherland — sporting a stylish coat and fedora for his standups outside Olympic Stadium — narrated a script that Griffin wrote for a highlight film project.
The actor oozed charisma as his deep pipes and smooth delivery provided warmth to the package.
“All he wanted (for it) was his same tickets — two tickets in the same spot — and we gave them to him for like four seasons. And that was it,” Griffin recalled. “Can you imagine, Donald Sutherland, the type of star power that he has, and he does a two-hour (narration) for two season tickets for four years? That’s crazy. But that was Donald.”
The Expos moved to Washington in 2005 and were renamed the Nationals. Sutherland also kept an eye on the Toronto Blue Jays, now the only Canadian team left in MLB.
In an interview last October to discuss a postage stamp that commemorated his career, he segued into talk about the Blue Jays’ elimination in the first round of the playoffs.
“Of course, my team is the Expos,” Sutherland said. “They’re gone.”
