During a conference of crime bosses held in a Gotham City skyscraper, gangster Chuckie Sol is killed by a mysterious cloaked figure, known as the Phantasm . Shortly after, Batman bursts in on the meeting and is blamed for the murder. City Councilman Arthur Reeves tells the media that Batman is an irresponsible menace, then attends a party at the mansion of billionaire Bruce Wayne, Batman's alter-ego. Reeves jokingly taunts Bruce for having allowed an old girlfriend, Andrea Beaumont , to get away.

In a flashback to fifteen years ago during Bruce's college days, Bruce is seen meeting Andrea in a cemetery while visiting his parents' grave. At this point, Bruce has vowed to avenge his parents' murder by dedicating his life to fighting crime. Later, wearing a ski mask, Bruce thwarts an armored car robbery. However, when Alfred asks how the fight went, Bruce is discouraged that the robbers considered him a clownish vigilante at first, and realizes he needs to adopt a persona that will strike fear into the hearts of wrongdoers. While he is laying the groundwork for crime-fighting, Bruce is also dating Andrea, and doing things with her such as visiting a future exposition, which contains a car prototype that catches Bruce's eye . He also meets Andrea's father Carl Beaumont, who is a businessman and Arthur Reeves, who worked as Beaumont's legal adviser at the time. In his study, while talking to portraits of his parents, Bruce wonders what his parents really want for him; to avenge their deaths as a crimefighter or to continue the Wayne bloodline by marriage and fathering children? Later, Bruce tells Alfred he has made his choice: he will abandon his crime-fighting career and focus solely on his work at Wayne Enterprises, and has also bought an engagement ring for Andrea. However, Andrea mysteriously leaves Gotham with her father, ending her engagement to Bruce in a Dear John-style letter. Believing that he has lost his only chance of having a normal life, Bruce proceeds with his other choice, to avenge his parents' murder and spare other families his pain. After seeing a bat fly in the night sky, Bruce realizes he has the perfect image of terror for wrongdoers, and finally dons the mask of Batman.

World of the Future

Bruce and Andrea going to the World of the Future Fair.

In the present, the killer finds and kills another gangster, Buzz Bronski, who is killed at the graveyard shortly after mourning Chuckie Sol. Batman discovers evidence linking the two murdered gangsters; they were both lieutenants of retired mob boss Salvatore "Sal" Valestra. Valestra himself, despite already close to dying from old age and lung cancer, fears that the killer has a pattern, and that he is next on the list. He seeks the Joker, with whom he had a prior working relationship, and offers him a large sum of money to assassinate Batman for him. Unfortunately, he foolishly trades one assassin for another; rather than going after the killer, the Joker kills Valestra with Joker Venom instead. The Joker then sets up a trap for Batman, planting Valestra's boobytrapped corpse in a chair in Valestra's living room while monitoring via a camera. He then suddenly realizes Batman is not the killer when he sees a hooded figure with a skull mask triggering the bomb, but the Phantasm survives by jumping out the window. Batman, who is nearby and is attracted to the scene by the explosion, tries to catch the Phantasm, but is hindered by the Gotham Police who still believe that he is the killer and attempt to apprehend him for the string of assassinations while the Phantasm escapes. Rescuing Batman in her car, Andrea explains that she and her father had been hiding in Europe, from the Valestra mob, to whom he owed a lot of money. Carl Beaumont eventually repaid them, but that did not satisfy them; they were angered by the fact he skipped town on them and wanted "payment in blood". Batman believes that Andrea's father may be the killer.

The next day, the Joker approaches councilman Reeves at his office, explaining that the killer is someone else than Batman. When Reeves coincidentally mentions that Andrea is back in town, the Joker suddenly realizes who the killer really is, and poisons Reeves with Joker gas before leaving. At the same time, Bruce Wayne studies an old photo of the Valestra mob together with Carl Beaumont when he recognizes one of the men in the background - it is the Joker (prior to his accident) who was then Valestra's bodyguard, enforcer and hitman. Batman then sees Reeves, who is now under treatment for joker poisoning at a hospital. Interrogating him, Batman learns that Reeves was the only person in Gotham Carl Beaumont stayed in touch with after fleeing to Europe, and that Reeves sold information on his whereabouts to Valestra to pay for his election campaign. Valestra then sent his hitman (the future Joker) to Europe to assassinate Beaumont. Disgusted with Reeves, Batman leaves without offering him an antidote. Making out the puzzle, Batman goes to Andrea's apartment, but she isn't there; instead, he is almost killed by another bomb trap set by the Joker. Realizing the bomb was meant for Andrea and not for him, Batman now understands who the Phantasm really is.

The Phantasm confronts the Joker in his hideout, which is the abandoned future exposition that Andrea and Bruce visited years ago. During their fight, the skull mask is lost and reveals her as Andrea, who is intent on avenging her father's death by killing the mobsters to whom he owed money and whom ordered Beaumont murdered. In the middle of their struggle, Batman arrives. Bruce begs Andrea to give up her desire for revenge but she refuses stating that Joker and Valestra ruined her chances with Bruce and that he himself is constantly fighting for revenge. Andrea then vanishes and Batman battles with the Joker in a miniaturized replica of Gotham City. After a protracted battle which injures both of them badly, the Joker surrenders to Batman, but Andrea shows up again, determined to finish what she started. She picks the Joker up and both of them vanish in the confusion of fire and smoke with the Joker laughing maniacally, with Batman barely escaping through a waterway while a series of rigged explosions goes off.

Back in the Batcave, a heartbroken Bruce receives consolation from Alfred, stating that Andrea was obsessed with revenge and murder and no-one could have helped her. Bruce finds the locket with a photo of himself and Andrea in the cave. Meanwhile, Andrea stands on the deck of an ocean liner, alone (the fate of the Joker is not explained). The final scene shows Batman now permanently alone standing on top of a building, still in grief. The Bat-Signal emerges in the distance and Batman flies into action to continue his crusade against crime.

  • Trivia Most of the movie is based on the graphic novels "Batman: Year One" and "Batman: Year Two". The flashback to Batman's first night of crime-fighting, donning a jacket and ski-hat is parallel to book one of "Year One". The design and concept of the Phantasm was derived from the Reaper, the primary villain of "Year Two".
  • Goofs When Andrea first encounters Batman in her apartment and he asks her about her father, he hands her a photograph with his bare hand. In the very next shot his glove is back on.

Batman : You think you know everything about me, don't you?

Alfred Pennyworth : I diapered your bottom; I bloody well ought to, *sir*!

Batman : Well you're wrong!

  • Alternate versions The UK video version was originally cut (for category) by 3 seconds to remove the use of throwing stars in the scene where Bruce fights off bank robbers. The new DVD version is uncut, and maintains the 'PG' certificate.

“Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” Newly-Remastered Edition Available on 4K Ultra HD September 12, 2023

(Burbank, CA) – Celebrate the 30 th anniversary of the most universally acclaimed film in the Dark Knight’s legendary cinematic history when the newly-remastered animated movie Batman: Mask of the Phantasm , comes to 4K Ultra HD for the very first time. From Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment, the film will be available to purchase on 4K Ultra HD on September 12, 2023.   The release will also include an all-new featurette Kevin Conroy: I Am The Knight, which takes a look at the legacy of Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman for 30 years in film, television, video games and more.   Rooted in DC’s acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series and released theatrically on Christmas Day 1993, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm has not only been ranked by Time magazine as one of the 10 best Super Hero movies ever, but is also arguably the core fans’ all-time favorite Batman film. The movie has been rated at the top of the Dark Knight film franchise by such popular entertainment media as Empire, Screenrant and Paste. And in the ultimate mainstream salute for its time, Gene Siskel & Robert Ebert didn’t initially review the film during its theatrical release, but later dedicated a portion of their At The Movies weekly TV series to pay compliment to the film – and voice their regret for not giving it the attention it deserved during its original run – when Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was distributed for home entertainment.   The 4K HDR/SDR remaster of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was sourced from the 1993 Original Cut Camera Negative and was scanned at 4K resolution. Digital restoration was applied to the 4K scans to remove dirt, scratches and additional anomalies, but special care was given to not touch the film grain or the animation cel dirt that was part of the original artwork. This is the first time since its theatrical release that it is presented in its 1.85 aspect ratio. The original 2.0 mix and the 5.1 tracks were remastered to remove or improve defects such as pops, ticks, dropouts and distortion.   The animated film features an all-star cast headed by the quintessential voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, alongside Dana Delany ( Desperate Housewives, China Beach ) as Bruce Wayne’s love interest, Andrea Beaumont, Mark Hamill ( Star Wars franchise) as the Joker, Stacy Keach ( Nebraska, Prison Break, Mike Hammer ) as Phantasm/Carl Beaumont, Abe Vigoda ( Barney Miller, The Godfather ) as Salvatore Valestra, Efrem Zimbalist Jr. ( The F.B.I. ) as Alfred, Hart Bochner ( Die Hard ) as Arthur Reeves, Bob Hastings ( McHale’s Navy, The Poseidon Adventure ) as Commissioner Gordon, Robert Costanzo ( Forget Paris, City Slickers ) as Detective Bullock, Dick Miller ( Gremlins, The Terminator ) as Chuckie Sol, and John P. Ryan ( The Right Stuff ) as Buzz Bronski. Additional voices included Pat Musick, Marilu Henner, Neil Ross, Ed Gilbert, Jeff Bennett, Jane Downs, Vernee Watson, Charles Howerton, Thom Pinto and Peter Renaday.   The Batman: Mask of the Phantasm filmmaking team is composed of the award-winning core group behind Batman: The Animated Series . Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm directed the film from a screenplay by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Martin Pasko and Michael Reaves, based on a story by Burnett.   Batman: Mask of the Phantasm will be available on September 12, 2023 to purchase Digitally from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Vudu and more. 4K Ultra HD Discs will be available to purchase online and in-store at major retailers. Pre-order your copy now.   SYNOPSIS: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm opens with the city's most feared gangsters being systematically eliminated, and assumed blame falling on the Caped Crusader. But prowling the Gotham night is a shadowy new villain, the Phantasm, a sinister figure with some link to Batman's past. Can the Dark Knight elude the police, capture the Phantasm and clear his own name? Unmasking the Phantasm is just one of the twists in this dazzling animated feature, which provides new revelations about Batman's past, his archrival the Joker, and Batman's most grueling battle ever - the choice between his love for a beautiful woman and his vow to be the defender of right.   SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE*: Kevin Conroy: I Am The Knight (New Featurette) – For 30 years, Kevin Conroy defined Batman for multiple generations using only his voice, best exemplified in the landmark film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm . Conroy passed away in November 2022, but his legacy lives on in 15 films, nearly 400 episodes of animated television series, a dozen video games, and as a live-action Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse’s 2019-2020 “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event. Several of Conroy’s contemporaries – including animation legend Bruce Timm, Batman producer Michael Uslan and revered voice actress Tara Strong – pay tribute to the star who remains the Dark Knight for millions of Batfans.   Bonus episode of Justice League: Unlimited featuring a cameo from Phantasm. *Special features are not available in 4K Ultra HD. Batman is wrongly implicated in a series of murders of mob bosses actually committed by a new vigilante assassin.

batman mask of the phantasm archive

In all of Batman’s multimedia appearances outside the comics and blockbuster feature films in this modern age, none may be as significant as  Batman: The Animated Series  for its impact on Batman fandom as well as DC animation, launching the DC Animated Universe. Spinning out of that series was the tie-in feature film  Batman: Mask of the Phantasm  which not only celebrates its 30th anniversary later this year, but will make its way onto 4K HDR release tomorrow. As an integral piece of Batman iconography released on several different formats over the years, how does the 4K disc stack up for fans to buy whether they’ve owned the film before or not?

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm  sees Batman investigating the appearance of a new villain in Gotham City who begins murdering several members of Gotham’s mafia. As Batman is falsely accused of the murders and hunted by the police and an ambitious councilman, his lost love returns to town drawing back memories of his origins as Batman that seemingly connect to this new vigilante, even gaining the attention of Batman’s archnemesis The Joker.

batman mask of the phantasm archive

One of the hallmarks of  Batman: The Animated Series  was how dramatic and serious it was for a children’s cartoon show, setting itself apart from many others throughout the 1990s and even still to this day. Mask of the Phantasm  dials it up to 11 as the story focuses on its characters and the events that shaped them, influenced more by pulpy film noir mysteries than typical superhero action. It is one of the strongest deconstructions of Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman in and out of comics, rivalled only by  Batman Begins  in its exploration into Bruce’s psyche. The film really captures the tragedy behind Bruce’s trauma in some very surprising and moving ways. One of its most memorable scenes is a young Bruce begging his parent’s grave to release him from his vow so he could live a normal and happy life with his girlfriend Andrea. The writing, animation and performance by the legendary Kevin Conroy in this sequence highlight how Mask of the Phantasm was pushing its boundaries to be more than a simple animated superhero adventure.

On the note of Conroy, who sadly passed away last year, very few can top him as the voice of Batman and Bruce Wayne. Conroy performed the role for nearly 30 years in a variety of media, from  BTAS  and the rest of the DCAU in  Batman Beyond ,  Superman: The Animated Series  and  Justice League  to video games with DCAU tie-ins, Rocksteady’s  Batman: Arkham  trilogy or NetherRealm’s  Injustice  games to several direct-to-DVD animated films. He even made a live-action appearance as Bruce Wayne in The CW’s DC crossover  Crisis on Infinite Earths . There was just no other Batman voice actor who loved and dedicated himself to the role quite like Conroy, a fact even later Batman voice actors have readily admitted, as he tapped into Batman’s darkness, tragedy and humanity through his sense of justice and compassion.

batman mask of the phantasm archive

While the 4K disc is lacking in special features for the film’s anniversary it is apt the sole feature is ‘Kevin Conroy: I Am The Knight’, a 25-minute mini-documentary on Kevin Conroy’s legacy as Batman with colleagues including legendary voice director Andrea Romano, Batman executive producer Michael Uslan,  BTAS  creators Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, DC writer and former DC Entertainment COO Geoff Johns and a few co-stars like Dana Delany and Michael Rosenbaum reminiscing on their time with Conroy and how beloved he is by themselves as well as fans.

The 4K transfer doesn’t appear quite as crisp as it could be, but it is still smooth and vibrant with the animation looking the best it ever has on home media. Much like the  BTAS  Blu-ray boxset, it really highlights how revolutionary the ‘Dark Deco’ art style was by using black paper instead of white and the impact in creating such an atmospheric film noir tone.

batman mask of the phantasm archive

It is a shame the disc doesn’t come with a host of special features as the film deserves to have its journey reflected, from the idea of it being a direct-to-video film to becoming a theatrical release to the animation and recording processes. Delany talks a bit about working with Conroy in the same recording room and how they created the chemistry between Bruce and Andrea together, but a whole feature dedicated to the recording sessions would have been great to see given the caliber of talent in the film, especially when it comes to Mark Hamill’s Joker and how much more of a menacing presence he is here than in the show since the Mask of the Phantasm  crew had fewer restrictions on what they could and could not do in the story.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm  is nothing short of fantastic and one of the best  Batman  films ever made, live-action included. Conroy, Delany and Hamill are all on fire and the story’s mystery with its deep dive into Bruce Wayne’s past, motivations and emotions not only emphasize the greatness of Batman’s character, but just how perfect Conroy was throughout his nearly 30 years playing Batman. The lack of bonus material on the disc is unfortunate, but it is made up with an insightful and moving look at Conroy’s legacy while the 4K transfer is very good. Whether you already own  Mask of the Phantasm  on another format or are new to it for the first time, it is well worth adding to your collection.

Kevin Conroy's Batman Honored in Mask of the Phantasm Featurette

The inimitable voice of a generation's caped crusader is celebrated for one of his best performances..

Batman at tomb

The legacy of the late great Kevin Conroy as Batman, which began on Batman: The Animated Series and continued in a beloved tenure across DC animated films and games, is celebrated in a featurette made for the home release of Batman:   Mask of the Phantasm .

“Kevin Conroy: I Am the Night,” which is also available to view on YouTube, digs into how he became the defining voice of Batman above any and all iterations of the character. “He really really embraced aspects of Batman’s character in a way that no other actor that we had listened to had,” Mask of the Phantasm and Animated Series writer Paul Dini shares in the emotional tribute. “And I think that came from the fact that he was not entirely familiar with Batman as a superhero or a pop culture character. He really got into the character from a very Shakespearean angle of somebody who had made sacrifices, who’d lost an awful lot.”

Voice casting agent for the show Andrea Romano adds, “He had this wonderful take on what the Batman voice was ... when I asked him about it, [he explained] ‘this is a Hamlet story’—this is a man whose parents have been killed, seeking vengeance. As he brought this kind of elegant take to Batman and Bruce Wayne [that] set him a cut above.”

The part of Batman was initially hard to cast; it required someone who came at it from a different approach, and Conroy walked in and effortlessly embodied the character without any background in voice acting. In an archive interview, Conroy reminisces, “To be honest I went in like a dumb actor. I really went in on a cold reading... I had no experience with animation.” Continuing in his iconic gruff Batman voice, he says, “I came up with this very dark [voice]”—bet you could hear it without even thinking twice—“[and] I went into this whole other place that no one else had gone to, I guess.”

Watch the full featurette below.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is now out on 4k Ultra HD and Digital.
