SUMMIT 35 IRC CRUISER/RACER

Smaller sister of Summit 40 with the same speed, space, and style, named Sailing World 2010 IRC Boat of the Year.

Winner of Sailing World’s 2010 IRC Race Boat of the Year, the Summit 35 is our latest dual-purpose IRC Cruiser-Racer design for the US-based performance yachts firm of Summit Yachts. A development of the King 40 design we prepared for Summit last year, it retains the key styling and performance characteristics that made the 2009 Boat of the Year King 40 such a success while integrating the lessons learned from our ongong CFD research and the feedback from our custom IRC designs.

The Summit 35 is designed to excel under IRC by combining the stability and power of a large sailplan and deep bulb keel with the low drag hullshape that permits strong all-around performance. This allows sparkling light airs performance in conjunction with the optional retracting sprit, as well as offering enough stability to excel in a breeze. The Summit 35 builds on the Mills Design pattern of ergonomic dual-purpose deck layouts with race-friendly systems to ensure that both racing crew and family friends can enjoy leisure and competition on the Summit 35. Below the open and comfortable interior boasts three double berths, standing headroom, and a spacious galley.

The two spreader rig supports masthead spinnakers flown either from the standard retracting sprit or the optional over-length carbon spinnaker pole. This simple keel-stepped rig configuration is controlled by a standard integral hydraulic backstay adjuster, and allows non-overlapping jibs for the optimum combination of performance and ease of use. Alloy is specified as standard as being most competitive in lighter conditions, with a carbon option for campaigns sailing in higher than average wind conditions.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The Summit 35 is a 35.1ft fractional sloop designed by Mills Design and built in fiberglass by Summit Yachts since 2009.

The Summit 35 is a light sailboat which is a very high performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a racing boat. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a very short water supply range.

Summit 35: A Mini Review

  • By Carol Vernon
  • Updated: September 17, 2009

summit 35 yacht

Summit 35 mini 368

Summit Yachts is following its 2009 Sailing World Boat of the Year, the King 40 racer/cruiser, with a smaller offering that is set up for racing yet with accommodations for eight. Aft of the V-berth and enclosed head is a wide open cabin with full length settee, large drop leaf table, galley, chart table and two double bunks aft. Designed to be competitive in IRC, PHRF and class racing, there is a full complement of sail controls. A deep keel fin with long bulb and a deep rudder will give good sailing performance, but will limit cruising in shallow water.

Doyle Sails

SUMMIT 35: For the love of racing sails

Newport, Rhode Island locals Vincent and Kristina McAteer love the game, the entire process of racing sailboats at a high level is something that they both obsess about. Shortly before graduation, Vincent bought his first keelboat, an Express 27 named  Divided Sky , with a J29 of the same name following a couple of years later. The McAteer family bought a J33 named  Coconut Telegraph  which was sailed for few years before finding the perfect boat for their family: a Mark Mills designed Summit 35, also named  Divided Sky .

summit 35 yacht

From constantly learning, to exhaustive research, to preparation, to organizing, to execution and finally evaluation, it is a process that they both truly enjoy. With outstanding competition in New England, they have to bring their ‘A’ game to every major race, keeps the excitement levels high. A welcome distraction from the high-pressure day jobs in law enforcement and as an ER physician.  It’s this love of the game that keeps them coming back.

Divided Sky 1

When asked what his sailing was to date and what keeps them coming back, Vincent commented  “this is really not one event but the gradual passing of the torch to the next generation of our family. As of late, we have been handing the helm over to our oldest son, Vincent, more often. He is 11 years old and has an eye for the ocean and a steady hand on the tiller well beyond his years. He has become a regular fill-in on the helm of the Summit 35 and we are now realizing that the hook has been truly set and sailing will be a part of his life. His younger brother has the same love of the ocean and we, as parents, could not be happier. Trophies are great…but seeing the smiles on the kid’s faces makes it all worth it. It has certainly changed our perspective on sailboat racing…that said, the goal remains the same”.

Those goals remain regional at this stage with local sailing gaining momentum in Narragansett Bay, while trying to put more regional events into the calendar. The long term goal is to travel south one winter and to do a few events along the east coast of the United States.

Divided Sky 3

The  Divided Sky  crew is a strong group of friends that have been sailing together for fifteen years, with the addition of kids to the crew list in recent years, but mostly made up of ‘ brilliant amateurs ’. Over the years the crew note how fortunate they have been to have a few heavy hitters sail onboard ensuring that the crew of amateurs are constantly learning.

This obsession with sailing is what has led Vincent and Kristina to work with Doyle Sails.

“ The addition of Rob and Dave MacMillan, and Alex Clegg to Doyle Sails Newport alongside Tony Rey. Without question, they bring a high level of service, commitment, and understanding that we have come to know and trust. They fully understand that we are a family team, but they have treated us and our goals as if we are a professional team with world-beating goals!  says Vincent.

He continues “ Alex, in particular, has spent a great deal of time over the past couple of years dialling in the rig on the Summit 35 to repeatable, reliable settings that work with the current inventory of sails on the boat. Additionally, they have helped identify the gaps in our inventory that will help on weak points of sail for the Summit. We are thrilled about keeping the relationship going as a part of the Doyle family ”.

Doyle Sails are high performance sail makers, holding a reputation for being proven innovators with new sail technology. Everything we do starts with our customers and our mission to provide sailors around the world with quality sails and unparalleled personal service. No other sail maker works as hard to satisfy the unique needs to every client, from the day sailors to the superyachts, and every boat in between. Boat that fatally struck a 15-year-old girl in Florida has been found, officials say

  • Copy Link copied

MIAMI (AP) — Investigators believe they’ve found the boat that fatally struck a 15-year-old girl off a South Florida beach, officials said Tuesday.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation and other law enforcement agencies had been searching for the vessel since Saturday, when Ella Adler was killed and the boat operator fled without stopping.

“The boat is in our custody, and the owner is cooperating,” FWC officer George Reynaud said in a video on Facebook.

Officials didn’t immediately say where the boat was found or how it was located. It also wasn’t clear whether the owner of the boat was the person who was operating it when the girl was hit.

Adler was water-skiing near Key Biscayne, just south of Miami, on Saturday afternoon when she fell into the water and was hit by another boat, which immediately sped away, officials said. Witnesses described the hit-and-run craft as a center console boat with a light blue hull, multiple white outboard engines and blue bottom paint.

A funeral service for Adler was held Monday morning at Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach. Adler was a freshman at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove and a ballerina with the Miami City Ballet.

A total reward of up to $20,000 was being offered for information that leads to an arrest.

These Russian stone carvings date back to 12,000 BC. WHAT??!

summit 35 yacht

With its gracious, broad and tree-lined boulevards, well maintained turn of the 19th to 20th century buildings and a lively riverfront, the city of Khabarovsk is often called the most European city in Asia. Nothing in the tranquil city hints of a history that goes beyond the middle of the 19th century, but a short road trip along the Amur River is enough to unfurl a treasure trove of petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) that are believed to date back to 12,000 BC.

Khabarovsk's city center

Khabarovsk's city center

The Khabarovsk Krai, which has about 789,000 square kilometers of territory, is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. These vast swathes of emptiness are visible when one drives on the highway that connects Khabarovsk with the industrial city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

75 kilometers north of Khabarovsk and just off the highway and on the right bank of the Amur is the Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan, where the petroglyphs are located. Residents call the village the ‘home of angry spirits’, thanks to the mystical occurrences that many have claimed to witness there.

History on the rocks

The area has about 200 petroglyphs, with a significant number being well preserved. The petroglyphs are easily accessible, as they are near the water’s edge on basalt boulders.

Petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan

Petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan

The best time to visit the area is actually early or late winter (despite the brutal cold), since the overflowing waters of the Amur hide them in the warmer months. Floods and ice floes have also caused considerable damage to many of the petroglyphs. Locals say some of the boulders have been turned upside down.

The carvings that date from different periods depict hunting scenes, animals, such as elk, horses and mammoths, shamans and shamanic masks and even people sitting in boats.

summit 35 yacht

Russia’s Far East is believed to have been one of the last habitats of mammoths before they became extinct. Among the best-preserved petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan, there is one engraving that clearly depicts a mammoth, while another shows a mammoth with an unknown creature. There’s also a large depiction of a beast with a tail.

Svetlana Onenko, a local historian who is also the curator of the indigenous people’s ethnographic museum and cultural center in Sikachi-Alyan, says the very existence of the mammoth depictions proves that the petroglyphs date back to around 12,000 BC. She adds that the ancient dwellers of this area probably also hunted mammoths.

A Nanai hunter (L); an ancient stone carving showing a mammoth

The older images, dating to the Paleolithic age, were carved out using stone tools. It should be noted that some archaeologists argue that the wild horses depicted in some of the petroglyphs did not exist in the Amur Region even in the Neolithic age.

summit 35 yacht

The newer carvings, including those of shamans and shamanic masks were used with more modern tools. These images are sacred to the Nanai and other indigenous groups who live in the village with a total population of just 300. Onenko says the members of the indigenous community are descended from the people who carved out the petroglyphs. Some European anthropologists, however, believe that the indigenous people were more recent settlers, who moved to the area around 2,000 years ago from Manchuria.

An abode of Shamanism

Neo-Shamanists visit the area from different parts of the world and take part in rituals, which some suspect as being influenced by a cult. Such is the belief in Shamanism in this area that the museum, which has a large number of indigenous artefacts, crafts and ancient Chinese coins, keeps its Shamanic objects in a designated space that is ritually blessed. “Shamanic objects are believed to possess a powerful (and potentially dangerous) energy,” Onenko says.

A Sikachi-Alyan's shaman

Locals claim to spot mystic occurrences near the so-called Starukha (Eng.: “old lady”) rock formation. According to indigenous legends, human beings did not die at one point of time, but their population grew so large that there wasn’t enough food for everyone. So the earth’s spirits decided that people, like animals, would also have to die.

The Starukha rock formation

The Starukha was apparently the first human being to face death and ended up turning into that big (and apparently haunted) rock.

While the Nanai and other indigenous groups were aware of the existence of the petroglyphs for centuries, the outside world came to know of them only in 1859, a year after the foundation of the city of Khabarovsk.

This “discovery” was made by Richard Maack, a geographer, naturalist and explorer who set out on an expedition of the Amur and Ussuri valleys. Maack, who was born in the Russian Empire’s Baltic governorate of Livonia, studied natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg and undertook several expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East in the 1850s.

Maack’s main area of interest was botany and six previously unknown plants that he collected by the Amur were named after him. His expedition north of the newly-founded Khabarovsk led him to Sikachi-Alyan, where he spotted the petroglyphs. There are less than a handful of surviving copies of Maack’s book titled, ‘Travel on the Amur river made by order of the Siberian department of the Emperor’s Russian Geographical Society in 1855’, which contains a wealth of information.

Russian archaeologists, scientists and historians took a great interest in the petroglyphs in the 20th century. In the 1930s, archaeologist Nikolai Kharlamov photographed them in detail. Three decades later, ethnographer and historian Alexei Okladnikov went on several expeditions to the area and wrote about the petroglyphs in detail in two books. His findings suggest that the artwork of Sikachi-Alyan had some resemblance to its counterparts from South East Asia, Polynesia and Australia.

The petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan are now among the most visited sites in Khabarovsk Krai. The Russian federal government was declared the legal owner of the petroglyphs in 2018 and efforts are underway to better preserve them, as well get the rock formations listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
