Seahawk is the second new Perini Navi to go into charter in about a year’s time. Also now accepting inquiries in the Caribbean is the 131-foot State of Grace , also a 2013 launch, listed with YCO.

Bookings for Seahawk are being done through Perini Navi. The yacht will be available in the British Virgin Islands and northern Caribbean, particularly around Antigua and St. Barth’s. The next opportunity to charter Seahawk will be this summer, when she is expected to have limited availability in the Mediterranean.

Christian Liagre Designs The Seahawk Yacht

"A boat is a shelter against a very aggressive environment,” says Guillaume Rolland, the principal architect at the influential Paris design firm Christian Liaigre. “Offshore is an inhospitable world of wind, waves, rain, and ultraviolet light—so the belly of a boat must be a nest, a place where one escapes all that.” At the same time, Rolland, who is a lifelong sailor, emphasizes that form must follow function. From the shape of a handle to the contour of a wall, even the most hedonistic super-yacht is, at the end of the day, a vehicle. “A boat is not a house,” he says, adding that when it comes to aesthetics on the high seas, “you must feel you are on an object that moves.”

Embodying that philosophy is one of the sveltest vessels to ever pass through Christian Liaigre’s studio— Seahawk, a 197-foot ketch completed in 2013 for a retired fashion executive. Rolland collaborated with Vancouver, British Columbia–based yacht virtuoso Ron Holland (the genius behind Rupert Murdoch’s Rosehearty and former Avis CEO Joseph Vittoria’s Mirabella V, the largest single-mast and the innovative Italian ship-builders Perini Navi to create Seahawk, a stealthy rapier of midnight-blue lacquer, propelled by colossal sails: The spinnaker is a vibrant red emblazonedwith a stylized raptor, while the other two are as gray as the densest fog. Expertly pruned to skirt the 500-geometric-ton threshold that would require additional crew and lifeboats, the luxurious Seahawk is also thrillingly swift.

“When the wind is right, we can do 15 and a half knots,” says the owner, who entered Seahawk in two major Caribbean races last year. (The boat flies the flag of the Isle of Man.) This fall he and six friends zipped from the Canary Islands to Florida to take in Art Basel Miami Beach, “catching bonito on the way and making sushi.” In November he and his wife plan to sail Seahawk around the globe. That cheers Holland, who notes, “Some clients just want to stick a boat in Monaco and use it for parties.”

Though the client took up sailing fairly recently—“I never had the time, and I’m still fit at 76, thanks to God”—he had definite ideas about a dream vessel. Sails were crucial, as much for energy savings as for sensuality. “Out on the ocean, there is no motor noise,” he enthuses, “just peace.” The latest maritime technology, such as cutting-edge winches, was key, he says, “because shaving seconds is important in a race.” The owner also wanted Liaigre’s firm for the job, having greatly admired the taste-maker’s quietly expressive Manhattan showroom, where buttery leathers meet silken woods, as well as the French firm’s work on the interiors of Vertigo, a 2011 Philippe Briand ketch.

Seahawk, the first of a limited-edition series by Perini Navi, is a seafaring Gesamtkunstwerk. The same teak used for the decks encases ceilings, walls, and floors below, though there it is offset by what Rolland calls the “chic contrast” of sycamore, rosewood, and liquidambar, materials that put a mondaine spin on traditional boatbuilding. Silver-lacquer bands strap the saloons and cabins, tracing Seahawk’s hull like modernist rib cages. Nickel-plated door handles are elegantly curved into a custom-made shape that evokes nautical cleats. “Your mind knows it’s a boat feature, even if you don’t know why,” he explains. “Collective memory is a big part of what we do at Liaigre.”

Most of the furnishings are unique to Seahawk. “The wife wanted to curl up anywhere with a book,” recalls Rolland, who developed sofas, chairs, and banquettes tailored for that preferred posture. The husband, on the other hand, had proposed two double beds for the main cabin, and Rolland placed them inventively, with one bed facing aft and the other facing forward. “It’s much nicer—the couple can talk to each other more easily,” he says, noting that “using a space in an interesting way, creating a better scenario” is a designer’s constant challenge.

Woven into Seahawk’s interior are soulful and refreshingly cliché-free emblems of the life aquatic. Free-form cedar tables cluster in the main saloon like a miniature archipelago. Lacquer maps depicting famous coastlines—one of them being Brittany, cradle of the fearsome corsairs—panel the bar and the study, and a Polynesian outrigger-canoe model and coils of Solomon Islands tevau (currency made of scarlet honeyeater feathers) occupy glass cases. Those relics and the decor they complement catch the eye but also grip the imagination, linking the 21st-century yacht to sailing’s primal past—and to the vast, capricious seas churning below.

The trend of yachts being loaned out to scientists is becoming more common these days as owners make good on promises of promoting sustainability via their vessels. Cruise lines Viking and Ponant have also jumped into the research game, creating luxury expedition vessels with labs that are now integral to their cruise protocols.

A number of superyachts are contributing to scientific research, while others are being built specifically as both superyachts and dedicated research vessels.

This trend is extending to owners designing superyachts that are hybrid research vessels. When Norwegian shipping magnate Kjell Inge Røkke’s REV Ocean launches in 2026 (the current estimated date of delivery), the 600-foot expedition yacht is expected be crowned the world’s largest superyacht. But it will be much more than that. Fully equipped with multiple labs for different disciplines, as well as advanced scientific equipment, the vessel will toggle between three modes: charter, research and expedition.

Other hybrids are already in the water. After a two-year rebuild at Damen that included the addition of research labs as well as a media center designed by film director James Cameron, OceanXplorer left on her maiden voyage in November 2020 to study the secrets of the Red Sea. The 285-foot vessel is the flagship of OceanX , an ocean exploration initiative founded by American businessmen Ray Dalio and his son, Mark.

A number of superyachts are contributing to scientific research, while others are being built specifically as both superyachts and dedicated research vessels.

Then there are owners like one Europe-based entrepreneur, who has designed a new 170-foot explorer yacht, for personal enjoyment and scientific research. As the summer launch date approaches, the owner is in talks with Yachts for Science , a program that connects scientists, researchers and content creators with yacht owners and crew for possible collaborations. The boat will be offered up free of charge for scientific missions.

Asking not to be named, the owner’s vision, from the first sketches, was to design an ice-class vessel that combines comfort and practicality. Teak decking, for instance, is out. Dry labs, workshops, a diving compressor and special freezing capabilities are in.

Onboard will be two 29.5-foot tenders specifically made for exploration, as well as four cranes, each of which can lift up to four tonnes. The boat also has the potential to bring two containers of research equipment on the rear deck.

For Seahawk’s American owners, their 170-foot sailing yacht has been a way to travel the world while leaving a legacy of good behind. Since departing the Mediterranean in 2020, the yacht has hosted scientists studying migratory patterns of pelagic species such as sharks and mantas in the Galapagos and Mexico. They have also helped survey coral reefs in Fiji’s Lau Islands, along with driving multiple charitable initiatives.

Seahawk’s rotational captain, Stephen Edwards, acknowledges that the type of equipment scientists bring with them doesn’t always match with the “superyacht perfection” stereotype.

But the tradeoff is the kind of work very few yacht owners and crew will ever experience. “We have video footage of our bosun holding the mouth of a tiger shark while somebody’s doing surgery on the other end,” says Edwards. “For the crew, this type of voyage is unique. They’re not going to see this in any other way.”

There is also the reward that comes from knowing their efforts have made a difference. One of Seahawk ’s first missions was to find evidence of a shark swim-way between the Cocos Islands National Park in Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands.

“The hypothesis is that these areas have always been linked together, but it was a matter for science groups to prove this in order to get governments to stop large fishing boats from parking themselves in the middle of this highway and just grabbing everything that swam past,” Edwards says.

Seahawk’s owner provided a platform for an expedition led by MigraMar, a leading authority in migratory species. “We got into it at a good time, thanks to our tagging work,” says Edwards. “It really put facts behind the hypothesis.” Subsequently, at the UN Climate Change Conference in late 2021, a new 24,000-square-mile marine reserve was defined by Ecuador to safeguard migratory species.

Considering that these voyages have coincided with travels Seahawk ‘s owner had already planned, itineraries that combine yachts and science seem to be a win-win for everyone involved. “These missions benefit the crew, science and the environment,” says Edwards. “The concept is also very much part of the owner’s vernacular. He actually calls it his mission.”

The SeaHawk Yacht

Page updated: 28 June 2020

An Ideal Trailer Sailer and First Yacht

This site celebrates the SeaHawk. It's a 17ft GRP drop-keel yacht, supplied in two and four-berth variants. It is used by many owners as a Trailer Sailer and is often advertised as an ideal first boat.

If you simply want to find out a little about the SeaHawk it's best to start at the Builders page and then work through the rest of the items under "The Boat" on the main menu.

To get an overview of how the site is organised scroll down below the image of the day, where there is also guidance on how to use the Main Menu .

Wanted! New Webmaster

I sold my SeaHawk, Just 17 (Previously Imagination ) in 2018. Time passes and I'm now nearer 80 years of age than 70. It's time to consider how to hand on this site to the next generation or, as a minimum, make arrangements for someone to manage a handover should I no longer appear active or unable to do that myself.

Please Join the Discussion on how to find a successor.

The site is aimed at a number of audiences, hence the structure of the main menu:

  • The construction and main design features of the boat
  • Its sail plan and rigging
  • Cabin options
  • Inboard and Outboard engine options
  • The history of the design
  • How it was promoted by its builders
  • A Gallery showing examples of the design with a commentary
  • Reviews featured in the press and from both owners and others
  • Find how others have tackled repair and maintenance issues
  • Be inspired by other owners customisations
  • Learn about good cruising waters and the local slipways
  • Swap trailer and trailing tips
  • Meet with other owners
  • Know where to look to buy a SeaHawk
  • Know what to look for when inspecting a boat
  • Find out the age of a particular SeaHawk
  • Know where to advertise for the quickest sale
  • Get an idea of value
  • Advertise on the site

And of course, the site aims to encourage discussion about this great little boat, hence we have a Forum where anyone can register and post questions, tips, photos, logs of cruises and more.

Using The Main Menu

When first opened, apart from HOME and CONTACT options, the main menu shows the headings indicated above. Most of the options have a [+] button on them indicating that there are further options relevant to that heading. Click/Tap on those buttons to reveal the additional options.

Once a sub-section is opened, it can be closed up again by using the [-] button that then appears against that heading. With over 130 pages on the main site there are up to four levels under each of the main headings and multiple options at each level, so don't be afraid the use the Site Search facility found by the menu button at the top of every page.

Help Expand The Site...

The site is maintained by Greg Chapman who became a SeaHawk owner (#267) on Easter Day 2004. It was a sad day when Just 17 was sold some 14 years later. He continues to struggle to maintain his Greg Afloat site, his general boating blog.

Live updates: follow the latest news on Russia-Ukraine

Several luxury yachts owned by wealthy Russians have been detained across Europe this month.

It comes after the West imposed sanctions on oligarchs over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine .

Some have taken evasive action – two such superyachts linked to billionaire Roman Abramovich were spotted approaching the Turkish coast on Tuesday. A group of Ukrainians tried to stop one of the yachts from docking in Turkey.

Chelsea FC owner Mr Abramovich is one of several oligarchs who were added to an EU blacklist last week as governments acted to seize yachts and other luxury assets owned by the billionaires.

Western sanctions resulted in many large vessels relocating from Europe in the past few weeks. Several have headed to places such as the Maldives, which have no extradition treaty with the US.

Where is the Abramovich-owned yacht heading?

Mr Abramovich's yacht Eclipse was seen heading towards Marmaris on Tuesday, according to data compiled by monitoring site Marine Traffic, which was seen by Reuters.

The previous day, his superyacht Solaris was moored in Bodrum, about 80 kilometres from Marmaris, data showed, after skirting waters of EU countries.

There was no suggestion Mr Abramovich was on board either of the yachts.

Which yachts have been detained?

On Monday, a superyacht linked to another Russian billionaire was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar.

The Axioma , believed to belong to Dmitrievich Pumpyansky, moored at Gibraltar on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Reuters TV footage showed.

Mr Pumpyansky, who is under UK and EU sanctions, owns Russia's largest steel pipe maker TMK. Data shows the 72-metre vessel is owned by a British Virgin Islands holding company called Pyrene investments, Reuters reported. An article published as part of the Panama Papers leaks names Mr Pumpyansky as a beneficiary of the holding.

On March 12, the world's biggest sailing yacht, called Sailing Yacht A and owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko , was seized by Italian police.

Several other luxury yachts have also been detained across Europe, including in Gibraltar, Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands and the French coast.

Here are 16 superyachts linked to wealthy Russians

1. Eclipse , a superyacht linked to sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich , was this week spotted heading in the direction of Marmaris in Turkey.

2. Solaris , belonging to Mr Abramovich , moored in Bodrum at the start of the week.

3. The Axioma superyacht, belonging to Russian oligarch Dmitrievich Pumpyansky , who is on the EU's list of sanctioned Russians, was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar on Monday.

4. The Crescent , which was seized by the Spanish government in Tarragona, Spain, on March 17. The ship's owner is not publicly known, although it is believed to belong to Russian Igor Sechin, head of Rosneft Oil in Moscow.

5. Ragnar , owned by former KGB officer and Russian oligarch Vladimir Strzhalkovsky, who is not on the EU sanctions list.

6. Tango , owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg, who was sanctioned by the US on March 11.

7. Lady Anastasia , owned by Russian arms manufacturer Alexander Mijeev, is retained at Port Adriano, Mallorca, as a result of sanctions against Russia and Belarus issued by the European Union.

8. Valerie was seized by the Spanish government in Barcelona, Spain, on March 15. Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the ship is linked to Rostec State Corporation’s chief executive Sergey Chemezov.

9. The $578 million Sailing Yacht A owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko was seized by Italian police in the port of Trieste on March 12.

10. The 156-metre Dilbar superyacht is owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov.

11. La Datcha belongs to Russian billionaire businessman Oleg Tinkov.

12. Lady M , owned by Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov, was seized by Italian police on March 5.

13. Amore Vero was seized in the Mediterranean resort of La Ciotat on March 3 by French authorities. The yacht is linked to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs the Russian oil giant Rosneft.

14. Quantum Blue , owned by a company linked to Russian billionaire Sergei Galitsky, the head of Russian oil giant Rosneft, was seized in southern France on March 3.

15. Superyacht Luna is owned by Russian billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov.

16. Triple Seven is owned by Russian billionaire Alexander Abramov, according to media reports. The yacht was last up for sale in 2020 for €38 million ($41.85 million).
