Take A Closer Look At Bond’s Spirit Yacht

The second spirit yacht to appear in a 007 film.

Posted October 4, 2021 by AI

It all started when a Spirit 54 yacht was chosen for Bond to sail in Casino Royale . Handmade by British boatbuilders, Spirit Yachts, the Spirit 54 was used for Bond and Vesper’s memorable arrival in Venice before the film’s dramatic climax.

Sean McMillan, Spirit Yachts CEO and Head of Design, tells us how their 007 story continued when a call came in from the No Time To Die production team. The crew were looking for the right vessel for Bond to enjoy as part of his life away from active service in the tranquility of Jamaica. Together they settled on a Spirit 46 sailing yacht.

Sean tells us, “The Spirit 46 is one of the original Spirit Yachts designs and is an example of the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into each of our yachts. It suits the Bond character very well because of the combination of beauty and practicality.

Inspired by the elegant sailing yachts of the 1930s, the Spirit 46 has a modern classic design with long overhangs, flush decks and an elegant profile. Capable of up to 18 knots speed, the vessel looks good on the water and has the sailing performance of a regatta racing yacht. The day sailing yacht will take you on short trips or around the world at a moment’s notice – making it the perfect boat for Bond.

The James Bond films are a mainstay of British culture and we are honoured to be continuing our partnership with such an iconic brand.”

Each Spirit yacht is built to order by a team of world-class craftsmen and women in the company’s waterside headquarters in Suffolk, UK. Every vessel is tailored to suit its owner’s criteria, making each one completely unique.

The latest James Bond film, No Time to Die will feature the Spirit 46. The modern classic yacht brand previously showcased its Spirit 54 in Daniel Craig's first 007 movie Casino Royale

The Spirit 46 makes an appearance in the latest James Bond film, No Time to Die , which is released in cinemas at the end of the month.

The yacht is seen sailing in the Caribbean , where 007 has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica.

It is not the first time Suffolk-based Spirit Yachts has partnered on a James Bond film.

The Spirit 54 was chosen to feature in the 2006 film Casino Royale , in which James Bond and Vesper Lynd can be seen cruising into Venice onboard a Spirit 54.

Spirit Yachts CEO and Head of Design Sean McMillan commented: ‘The James Bond films are a mainstay of British culture and we are honoured to be continuing our partnership with such an iconic brand.’

Just over 14m long, the Spirit 46 has a sleek underwater profile and is sold as ideal for fast-paced racing or coastal day cruising with planning speeds of up to 18 knots.

NO TIME TO DIE: HOW SPIRIT YACHTS BECAME THE OFFICIAL BOAT OF JAMES BOND.

With a Spirit 46 making an appearance in the latest James Bond film, No Time To Die, Spirit Yachts founder and CEO Sean McMillan gives an insight into the 007 filming process.

In the recently-released James Bond film No Time To Die, Daniel Craig’s 007, now retired from active service, is cruising the waters of Jamaica on board his own Spirit 46 sailing yacht. Bond is well known for appreciating the finer things in life and his choice of a Spirit 46 aligns the builder with the likes of Aston Martin cars and Omega watches.

“ I think it suits the Bond character very well ,” says Spirit Yachts chief executive Sean McMillan. He emphasises that, unlike the gadgets Bond is given on the job, the yacht he sails reflects the agent’s personal taste.

“ While appreciating the very best of everything, and having had on many occasions access to the very best of everything, when it comes to making his own personal decisions [I think] he would choose to have something that was exquisitely good, that was probably very beautiful, but there was nevertheless an extremely practical expression of what he wanted to do in his life ,” he says.

Casino Royale

So how did the Ipswich-based shipyard become a staple of James Bond’s discerning taste? The journey began back in 2006 when production company Eon Productions was working on Daniel Craig’s first foray into the Bond role - Casino Royale. “ We just got a telephone call one morning which was a little surprising ,” recounts McMillan. Once he was reassured that no yachts would be harmed in the making of the film, McMillan was on board.

“ As luck would have it, we happened to have one yacht that was brand new and fitted the bill, so off we went ,” remembers McMillan.

The yacht McMillan refers to is the 16.4 metre Spirit 54’  Soufrière,  which hosts Bond and Vesper Lynd as the couple cruise through Venice. Filming took a total of six months and involved shipping and cruising the yacht to various locations. The yacht even made history as the first sailing yacht to go up the Venetian Grand Canal in 300 years.

During filming McMillan was charged with directing Craig on board and ensuring Bond appeared a convincing experienced sailor.

At times, this involved McMillan lying on the floor – out of shot – barking instructions up to Craig as the cameras rolled. “ By the time you've got cameras, cameramen and soundmen on a very small boat, there's not much room ,” says McMillan. He adds however that “ everybody just muddles on and gets along with it. There's no real difficulty about it at all because everyone wants the same end goal .”

Technicalities of the  Casino Royale  filming process also involved removing and replacing the   yacht’s rig 10 times to ensure the yacht could fit under multiple canal bridges. “ That was tricky, but the end result was two minutes in the film, and it did absolute wonders for us ,” says McMillan.

The spotlight cast on Spirit Yachts thanks to  Casino Royale  affected the company “very favourably”, says McMillan. As a direct consequence of the 2006 film, the company sold three boats and benefited from “considerable” interest. One buyer even contacted Spirit immediately after watching the film. “ He told me he stayed right through the credits to find out who made the boat and rang us up the next morning ,” says McMillan. The story has a happy ending, directly resulting in the sale and delivery of a Spirit 60.

No Time To Die

It wasn’t long after work got underway on the much-anticipated No Time To Die that McMillan received a familiar phone call. It was Eon Productions approaching McMillan for Spirit’s involvement in Daniel Craig’s Bond finale. “ The whole process started again ,” McMillan says.

The production team wanted a boat small enough to be sailed independently by Bond but still looked “ used and well-loved ”. They landed on a 14m modern-classic Spirit 46, which was due to undergo a winter refit. “ [Eon] said, ‘no, leave it like that, with that slightly end of season, slightly used look about it ,” McMillan says. “ They didn't want her to be pristine, although we did of course .”

The yacht was shipped over to Jamaica where McMillan once again joined Craig at the helm. “ He hadn’t forgotten anything at all ,” he says, describing Craig as a “capable chap.”

“ I think once he’s learned something, he doesn’t have to relearn it at all ,” added McMillan. The Spirit founder reminisces fondly on the experience, recounting that, with the sailing instruction in hand, he was even able to “ enjoy the sunshine and drink a bit of rum. ”

The Spirit 46 is now back with her owners, who recently cruised her around the Long Island Sound. Spirit Yachts, meanwhile, has been enjoying the attention from the film release, with McMillan suggesting that it will once again have a positive impact on enquiries and brand awareness.

As for the future, McMillan hopes the partnership will mean more appearances on screen “ I think it would hopefully mean that every now and again, we will certainly be involved ,” hints McMillan, adding that the partnership “ is a very nice accolade to have .”

Other sailing films

This is not the first time sailing has featured in major Hollywood blockbusters, to varying degrees of success.

There have been some decent examples, most recently we saw F50 catamarans featured in Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending Tennet , and before that Adrift  based on the book Red Sky in Mourning  – Tami Oldham Ashcraft’s true account of sailing into a Pacific hurricane, dismasting, and then sailing solo under jury rig for 41 days alone to Hawaii.

Looking further back there was actually a great deal of decent multihull sailing within the otherwise pretty ropey Waterworld and a great catamaran scene featuring Piers Brosnan in the remake of the Thomas Crown Affair.

And of course, who can forget Wind , the 1980s America’s Cup film, from which the sailing community was gifted the immortal words ‘break out the Whomper’.

No Time To Die will be released in UK cinemas from 30th September and in the U.S. from 8th October 2021.

Spirit Yachts’ brand partnership with EON Productions, Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios (MGM), and Universal Pictures International on the James Bond films began when a Spirit 54 was chosen to feature in the 2006 film Casino Royale .

This year, Spirit Yachts returns to the big screen alongside 007 in the 25th Bond film, No Time To Die .

Casino Royale :

The scene portraying Daniel Craig and Eva Green cruising into Venice onboard a Spirit 54 is now world famous. Having been handcrafted by Spirit Yachts’ skilled team of boat-builders in Suffolk, the yacht (a 54 foot design named Spirit) was shipped to the Bahamas. From there, Spirit Yachts sailed her to Puerto Rico and through the British Virgin Islands for filming. After shooting scenes in the Caribbean, the yacht was shipped to Croatia and sailed on to Venice. During filming in Venice, the yacht’s rig was taken in and out a total of 10 times to fit under multiple canal bridges. She was the first sailing yacht to go up the Grand Canal in 300 years.

Omega has released a new promo video for their Omega Seamaster 300M No Time To Die edition which includes unseen footage.

Spoiler alert - more scenes and images from No Time To Die revealed

The video shows new footage from No Time To Die , most notably James Bond sailing his Spirit Yacht in Jamaica, and receiving and using his Omega Seamaster 300M No Time To Die watch .

First Q takes the watch of a special device which probably has loaded the watch with a gadget function. Q says "Your watch." as he presents it to Bond. The watch is connected to the device via a black electric 'charger'.

Q takes the watch of the special device, confirming that the watch will once again be a gadget watch!

We hear Q speak about the watch over shots of the Omega Seamaster 300M No Time To Die.

Bond asks Q: "How strong is it?" possibly referring to an electric charge or explosive power.

Q replies "It's... fairly strong" while we see Bond using the watch in an action scene where Bond wears his Commando outfit .

"We haven't had the time to test it properly so just be careful", Q warns Bond.

Another new shot continues from the last trailer , where Bond receives his Tom Ford tuxedo from Paloma (Ana de Armas) in a Bennett Winch suit carrier .

James Bond unbuttons his Tommy Bahamas shirt, changing into his Tom Ford Tuxedo

This time he has his Tommy Bahama shirt unbuttoned, suggesting he changes from his Jamaica/Cuba outfit into the Tuxedo outfit in the bar where he meets Paloma. This then leads to the next scene of Bond in the large group of tuxedo clad people that seems to end in the shoot out with Ana de Armas wielding two weapons and fly-kicking people.

Then, for the first time, we see James Bond in his Spirit Yacht. First a close-up of Bond's arm steering the boat, with the Omega watch being clearly visible. This shot could be an Omega promo shot, since the watch is so prominently featured, and possibly not be seen in the final film, but we will only know for sure when the movie comes out.

In the next sailing shot, we see James Bond wearing his very casual Jamaica outfit - a black Tommy Bahama shirt , grey Tom Ford jeans , Sperry shoes , Barbour jacket , sunglasses (probably the Vuarnet Legend 06 , but it's hard to see) and something we haven't seen him wear before: a baseball cap.

In the background we see the water plane approach, presumably the same water plane seen in an earlier trailer .

Daniel Craig shares many style elements and his look with the iconic Steve McQueen and this No Time To Die sailing outfit is reminiscent of Steve McQueen's outfit in The Thomas Crown Affair, where he wears a navy Baracuta Harrington jacket , Persol 714 sunglasses  and blue baseball cap.

A final shot shows the watch in a promo shot that won't be in the film, but it does feature part of Q's gadget device in the background.

And the last title screen mentions "ONLY IN CENEMAS" - which leads us to believe there won't be a Video On Demand option (which some have suggested could be a way to counter the low cinema attendance due to Corona fears) at the time of the release in November.

Earlier this month, Omega released another video featuring Daniel Craig and focusing on the design and production of the Omega Seamaster 300M No Time To Die, watch it below:

How No Time to Die’ s Unprecedented Ending Sets Up the Future of the Bond Franchise

Warning: Major spoilers for No Time to Die ahead.

Bond is dead. Long live James Bond.

In the franchise’s storied 58-year history , 007 has never actually died. Bond movies usually end with the successful destruction of a villain’s lair, and the camera panning away as the hero beds a Bond girl—on a boat, in space, on a balcony, often with his would-be rescuers looking on. The next movie may star the same actor or a different one, but rarely does anything of real consequence—romances, villainous encounters—carry over from film to film. Even when Bond’s wife was murdered on their wedding day in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), she’s never even mentioned in the film’s sequel, Diamonds Are Forever (1971). Even when Bond hunts down Blofeld, the man he presumably holds responsible for his wife’s death, he never even mentions Tracy’s name.

That refusal to establish Bond film continuity changed in a big way with Casino Royale (2006), the first to star Daniel Craig in its title role. That film ends with the revelation that Bond’s first true love, Vesper, was being blackmailed by a villainous figure. At their behest, she worked to entrap Bond but later sacrificed her life in order to save his. In the final scene of Casino Royale , Bond begins his journey to discovering the man responsible for Vesper’s betrayal and death, and subsequent movies follow him down the rabbit hole of exposing the evil organization Spectre and its leader, Ernst Blofeld (Christoph Waltz). In 2015’s Spectre , 007 finally finds Blofeld and learns that this man was in fact the “architect” of all of Bond’s pain throughout the entire movie series. Everything is connected, alas.

And so No Time to Die , released in theaters Oct. 8, endeavors to bring this arc to a close with an actual finale. And, despite the movie’s title, James Bond—as played by Craig in his last outing as the famous spy—does, in fact, die. Here’s why 007 had to sacrifice himself and what it means for the future of the franchise.

How James Bond dies

NO TIME TO DIE

The path to Bond’s demise starts with the movie’s first major twist, another departure for the famously unattached spy. Halfway through the film, Bond discovers that he has a daughter. It’s a first for any 007.

At the beginning of the movie, Bond finds himself deeply in love with Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), whom he met during the events of Spectre . Swann says that in order for the two of them to have a future together, Bond needs to let go of the memory of Vesper. Bond visits Vesper’s grave in Italy, only for the tomb to explode in an attempted assassination by Spectre goons.

Bond, of course, escapes the explosion relatively unscathed only to be greeted by the aforementioned goons. During a fight scene, one such thug insinuates that Madeleine betrayed him—just like Vesper had. A wounded Bond kills the bad guys and puts Madeleine on a train, planning to never see her again. He then heads to a remote island to live out his retirement in teeny, tiny swim trunks.

Five years later, Bond is dragged back into the spy game and collides with none other than Madeleine, who is now working as a therapist for MI6. And, surprise! She has a daughter. (MI6 apparently did not know about this child, which makes one seriously question the abilities of the Brits to gather intelligence. A dozen megalomaniacs have vendettas against Bond at this point. Maybe they should keep better track of his possible offspring, who would be obvious targets for kidnapping?)

Madeleine claims the child is not Bond’s. It’s a pretty obvious lie. As Bond points out, they share the same intense blue eyes. Madeleine will, of course, later in the movie confess that his suspicions are well-founded. Predictably, the movie’s villain, Safin (Rami Malek) kidnaps Madeleine and the child and takes them to his lair, an island where he harvests a bunch of different poisons because, well, he’s a creepy Bond villain.

Safin is mass-producing a bioweapon, a poison that is programmed to people’s specific DNA. If the targeted person is exposed to that poison, they will die, even though the carrier of the toxin will remain unharmed. He wants to use the poisons to target specific people and throw the world into chaos for vague bad-guy reasons.

With the help of another 00 agent, Nomi (Lashana Lynch), Bond gets Madeleine and their daughter off the island. Bond stays behind to open a bunch of missile silos so that the Brits can blow the place to smithereens, only to encounter Safin on his way out. Safin poisons Bond with a toxin that will specifically kill Madeleine and their daughter if Bond goes anywhere near them, which means Bond can never touch his love or child ever again. Tech genius Q (Ben Whishaw) tells Bond that there’s no way to remove the toxin once it’s been applied. How he can possibly know this—and whether some experimentation over the course of years could lead to a cure—is unclear, but Bond accepts this fate quickly.

Bond shoots Safin dead, and then calls Madeleine to wish her farewell as he watches several missiles approach the island. And then, boom, Bond is gone. Whether you’re a fan of Daniel Craig’s portrayal of Bond or not, it’s a rather poetic ending to the era. The five films that starred him successfully pivoted the franchise from one-off romps filled with fast cars, cool gadgets and, yes, the Bond woman, to a brutal epic of a hitman trying to find his soul.

But Bond’s death was also necessary for this franchise to survive.

Was a permanent end necessary to let Daniel Craig finally bow out?

NO TIME TO DIE

It’s no secret that Daniel Craig has wanted out from the Bond franchise for awhile now. He infamously declared in 2015 he’d rather “slash his wrists” than return the character and quipped that if he did come back it would only be for money. He did, of course, end up coming back for one more outing. One can’t help but speculate that he returned to the franchise on the condition that he be offed by the end of the film so a massive paycheck could never tempt him again.

He’s not the first actor to want out of an iconic role. Harrison Ford reportedly begged George Lucas to kill Han Solo before finally getting his wish at the hands of J.J. Abrams, decades later, in The Force Awakens . Leonard Nimoy reportedly wanted to kill off Spock in Wrath of Khan only to later change his mind. Even Sean Connery, the man who made James Bond an icon, wanted 007 dead after playing the character seven times (though he never got his wish). Onscreen deaths can not only offer an actor a reprieve from a role that offers diminishing creative returns, but a heroic and bittersweet demise can also engender sympathy for a character and cement their cinematic legacy.

Craig craved an identity beyond the Bond character. Thankfully, he has found it in other films, particularly as Detective Benoit Blanc in Knives Out , which is getting a whole series of movies on Netflix. Now, unless the Bond Cinematic Universe goes the way of superhero films and begins resurrecting characters using time travel , quantum mechanics and whatever other movie magic the writers can think up, he’ll be able to move on from Bond forever.

Bond’s sacrifice gives him a redemptive arc that modern audiences need

NO TIME TO DIE

We all know that the character of James Bond is problematic. The character has a history of raping, objectifying and using women. And Bond movies often glamorized that behavior. The character taught generations of men that misogyny was cool. Just as little girls look to figures like Barbie to perceive what they should be, what they should value and how they should interact with men when they grow up, so too do little boys look for cues from famous, enduring figures like Bond.

To its credit, Casino Royale tried to reckon with the question of how, exactly, Bond became such a misogynist. A betrayal by a woman provided part of the answer, though misogyny seemed to be baked into Bond’s very character. Before Craig’s Bond ever meets Vesper, he sleeps with a woman for information and is hardly perturbed when he finds her brutally murdered the next day. By the end of the movie, when he finds out that Vesper both betrayed and saved him, he responds, infamously, “The bitch is dead.”

It’s hard to reconcile that brutal perspective with the fact that Bond remained eminently hip—a familiar vehicle through which tailors and car dealers and watchmakers could hawk their wares to an adoring public. The movie wanted us to acknowledge this man we idolized was a monster, but didn’t want us to stop idolizing him.

How, exactly, that character could survive a post-#MeToo era was unclear. Could the world’s most famous fictional misogynist endure? Would he have to reform?

Given the choice between reckoning with Bond’s past and ignoring it, No Time to Die— the first Bond movie filmed since #MeToo went viral in 2017 — leans into the latter. Nomi, who bears the title of 007 herself for much of the film, occasionally quips that Bond is a dinosaur. But by the end of the movie, she cedes the 007 title to him as a sign of respect, seemingly offering her approval and erasing any of his past misdeeds.

How does Bond go from questionable womanizer to good guy so quickly? The answer lies squarely at the feet of his daughter. As soon as she enters the picture, the most brutal things Bond does, like dropping a car on a bad guy begging for his life, are not out of coldness but in service of this innocent. The audience automatically extends sympathy to a man just trying to defend his family. He is, to use a phrase that has been wielded (and mocked) widely in recent years, now the forever awakened father of a daughter .

This isn’t a new trick in Hollywood. Dads looking to protect, specifically, their young girls have been in vogue as of late: Just look at Taken , Stillwater, Sweet Girl and, in the closest parallel to the current Bond plot, Avengers: Endgame .

Hollywood has a knack for redeeming womanizers

sailboat in no time to die

This redemption arc is a familiar one. Only two years after Casino Royale premiered, Iron Man debuted, launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The movie improbably starred the world’s biggest playboy as a superhero. Like Bond, Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark engaged in some womanizing that has aged particularly poorly, including sleeping with a journalist that Stark’s assistant, Pepper Potts, deems “trash,” and ogling bikini pictures of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow , whom Pepper observes is “a very expensive potential sexual harassment suit.” (The fact that Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts had to utter both of these putdowns of fellow women is particularly gross.)

Read More: Black Widow Began as a Sexist Stereotype. More Than a Decade Later, Scarlett Johansson Is Reclaiming Her Story

But by the time that (spoiler alert for Avengers: Endgame ) Tony Stark sacrificed himself at the end of that saga, he was—you guessed it—the father of an adorable little girl, an all-around family man and unassailable hero. Both franchises had years to get with the times, to transform IP created for another era (Bond and Iron Man were conceived in 1953 and 1963, respectively) into the sorts of protagonists we can actually applaud today.

In fact, No Time to Die and Avengers: Endgame bear striking parallels. Bond and Stark are both anti-heroes who do questionable things for the sake of humanity, even if Bond puts a grimmer spin on his actions than the smirking Tony Stark. Each reforms, retires and seemingly finds his happily-ever-afters off the beaten path—Bond gleefully whispers “Je t’aime” to Madeleine as they tumble into bed at an Italian hotel together at the beginning of No Time to Die ; Stark, meanwhile, feeds his daughter ice pops in the woods as they tell each other, “I love you 3000.”

A plea to return to the fray arrives from a friend, Felix Leiter in Bond’s case and Steve Rogers in Stark’s. Each agrees, in part because of guilt. (Stark gazes at a picture of the disappeared Peter Parker he failed to save, Bond tells Madeleine his greatest regret is putting her on that train.) After a touching scene with their mini-mes—Stark’s daughter dons the Iron Man helmet, while Bond’s daughter blinks up at him with his bright blue eyes—they sacrifice themselves for the greater good.

With that, the redemption arc that might win over even the most skeptical audience members is complete. And it offers a clean slate to whoever might come next.

Where does the Bond franchise go from here?

NO TIME TO DIE

Does Bond’s death (and the fact that it so heavily evokes the sacrifice of a superhero) suggest that we’re about to get the Marvelization of Bond? That might seem antithetical to the franchise, which has always casually recast new actors to play the role without ever commenting on it in the film. Bond exists outside of time and space, never explicitly aging and always evolving to suit the needs of a new era.

The Craig era of Bond movies has strayed from that ethos a bit. This Bond did, indeed, grow old and now has met his demise. Many 007 fans booed Spectre exactly because it got so bogged down in the mythology of the franchise, tracing which old villains came from where and obsessing over the hero’s origin story rather than cool cars and well-cut suits. If Bond has gained gravity, even gained a soul, he’s lost the lightness of those first films. Until now, the Bond films could be watched in a vacuum or as part of a binge, and even the silliest ones satisfied because of just how ridiculous and disposable everything and everyone in them was, including not only the Bond girls but also the hero himself, subbed out every few years. In such a grim offscreen moment, fans would be forgiven for longing for that carefree version of the character.

But is Bond’s misogyny so coded into his DNA that it’s impossible to remake this character? Craig’s Bond bore women ill feelings, and the series reckoned with them only slightly before offering him a saving grace in the form of a daughter. Would another, lighter version simply make light of the fact that this character has existed in the public imagination as an chauvinist for all this time?

It’s hard to imagine it would. It wasn’t 007 slapping girls in the face that made those older Bond movies enjoyable. It was the lightness with which he handled even the most terrifying villain’s plots, meeting them with a quip and a swig of his martini.

The producers have said they won’t begin their hunt for the next Bond until next year. And though the introduction of Nomi suggested Lynch might inherit the role, producers and Craig have shut those rumors down. Craig recently said that he didn’t think Bond should be a woman. “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”

While that might be the ideal circumstance, that suggestion ignores the fact that nobody (save, perhaps, Christopher Nolan ) can seem to get an original idea greenlit in Hollywood these days. Studios are obsessed with IP and old, proven IP, especially in the domain of action and spy thrillers , simply does not exist for women. Searching for a history of female spies, all one can find is Charlie’s Angels , whose gender politics are so fraught to that story of three women at the beck and call of a mysterious man may be impossible to adapt well. The most promising female spy movie may in fact be a spinoff from the Bond franchise, perhaps one set in Cuba and starring Ana de Armas, the breakout star of No Time to Die (and Craig’s co-star in Knives Out ).

But certainly, now that Craig has put his Bond to bed, the Broccoli family has an opportunity to signal to the world that they are rethinking this character, dragging him into the modern era if they must. They can reshape him or confront his past. But they cannot outrun his legacy.

How the stunt crew in ‘No Time to Die’ pulled off the film’s astounding motorcycle jump

A conversation with the special effects supervisor about that bike scene, donuts in the Aston Martin DB5, and a stunning seaplane shot.

By Rob Verger | Published Oct 4, 2021 1:55 PM EDT

Don't try these stunts at home.

Towards the beginning of the latest James Bond film, No Time to Die , a stuntman pulls off a breathtaking jump on a motorcycle. A rider, ostensibly the film’s protagonist, races up a steep ramp in Matera, Italy, then soars over a wall.

The 25th Bond film debuts on Friday, Oct. 8, and viewers can expect the typical excitement—car chases, explosions, gun battles, and the like. Popular Science caught up with the film’s special effects and action vehicles supervisor, Chris Corbould, to learn more about how they put some of those sequences together. There are no spoilers ahead; all the stunts referenced are visible in the film’s trailers, one of which is embedded below.

Here’s what we know about that motorcycle jump, and other awe-inspiring moments from this fifth and final installment in the Craig-as-Bond franchise; we also look back at one classic car scene from a 70s-era Bond film.

The motorcycle jump

The jump in Matera, Italy, features a stuntman named Paul Edmondson riding a Triumph Scrambler motorcycle. “That was absolutely done for real,” Corbould says. “Lee Morrison, the stunt coordinator in the film, has a big background in motorcycles.”

“ Cary [Joji Fukunaga, the director] wanted one great bike stunt in that beautiful city, and that’s what Lee came up with,” he says. “I’ll never forget, when we did that on the day, there was a massive round of applause.”

“There was no trickery there—he just went up it and jumped it,” he adds.

Viewers interested in the jump can also check out Being James Bond , a documentary about Daniel Craig’s work in the Bond films; at about the 39-minute mark, there’s a brief clip of what appears to be the tail end of that stunt, with the rider wearing a helmet. Both Autoweek and MotorBiscuit have more details, and here’s some behind-the-scenes footage .

In another moment towards the beginning of the film, Bond is behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DB5, and there’s a scene in which the car spins in circles, spraying bullets from guns protruding from the front of it. “Daniel [Craig] actually did that donut in the square,” Corbould says, “where it was spinning around and firing the guns at the walls.”

Corbould explains that the film involved a second unit, or the “action unit,” which filmed shots first, and then the actors arrived. “We shot the donut and DB5 shooting up the walls with stunt drivers,” he says, “and then when Daniel came out, he did another shot as well, so they could get shots with his face in it.” Autoweek also has more on those donuts, explaining that the scene involved modifying the stunt vehicle so that its front left wheel wouldn’t spin, thanks to a handbrake.

For the actual vehicles, the filmmakers relied on 10 physical versions of the DB5. Two of the vehicles were “pristine,” Corbould says, which they used for “whenever Daniel was getting in and out, [or] pulling away.” Meanwhile, eight additional vehicles played various roles. “Some were kitted out with gadgets; some were full stunt cars, with full rally roll cages in; they each had a job to do,” Corbould says.

[Related: Rolls-Royce’s zippy electric airplane wants to break speed records—and power air taxis of the future ]

“You have to have multiples of each,” he says, “because if one gadget car clips the curb during the sequence, and bends an axle, you can’t have 600 people waiting around while we mend it, so you just pull that one out, and pull another one in.”

Those eight cars were Aston-Martin-built replicas, and by “gadget car,” Corbould means a vehicle that deploys gadgets, such as those machine guns in the front. Car and Driver notes that the guns “malfunctioned” back in 2019—the barrels didn’t spin as they were supposed to—when they were on set observing.

Bond films, of course, have a long history of action sequences. Back in early 1970s, for example, The Man with the Golden Gun involved a car’s crazy twisting jump over a river, which, as a company called Altair points out, wouldn’t have worked if the vehicle hadn’t been adjusted in a very specific way to include a type of fifth wheel to keep it on track for the stunt.

The seaplane

Finally, in another scene, a seaplane flies away from a fishing boat, towards the camera, as the vessel explodes in the background. “That was a real shot—that was a real trawler, and a real plane,” Corbould says. “It was all perfectly lined up from a helicopter shot.”

“We did it twice,” he adds. “The first time the framing wasn’t quite right, but the second time we absolutely nailed it.”

As for that fishing vessel, it didn’t actually explode. “We made it look like it was blowing up,” Corbould says.

Ana de Armas & Jeffrey Wright: The Unsung Heroes of No Time To Die

The James Bond franchise could sure use more characters like these.

sailboat in no time to die

More than most James Bond films, Daniel Craig’s definitively final performance as Agent 007 in No Time to Die (streaming here on Peacock) asks a pretty big investment from viewers. With a runtime of nearly three hours and a sinister story that dwells farther over into the somber and serious side of the franchise’s durably endearing mix of emotional notes, it’s a heavy, main-course kind of movie rather than a lightweight dessert.

It’s also epically great, of course, replete with a freaky biological-warfare MacGuffin and some of the wildest and most inventive action set pieces in the entire James Bond movie canon. As you’d expect from a tentpole Bond flick — the 25th in the series and Craig’s swan song as its 2000s-era star — the huge A-list cast is terrific, too. But at a chunky 163 minutes, even a great James Bond movie needs more than powerhouse casting, mind-blowing stunt work, and a satisfying ending to keep its pace lilting along. No Time to Die finds the solution for early-onset marathon-movie fatigue in a couple of well-placed character diversions that, in hindsight since its 2021 release, save the film from sinking under its own heft.

For More on  No Time to Die : Daniel Craig explains why his James Bond had to die The Faroe Islands is some place to die: Daniel Craig's James Bond gets his own gravestone 'No Time to Die' director on building James Bond a city – and the unnoticed Easter egg hidden within

Hello Ana de Armas! (And goodbye, Jeffrey Wright) — The revolving door of James Bond characters

Those two diversions come early in the movie, and critically, they couldn’t be more different from one another. One arrives as a fun and funny interlude between Bond and a CIA Agent named Paloma ( Ana de Armas ); the other as a poignant farewell between Bond and returning CIA officer Felix Leiter ( Jeffrey Wright ). Each encounter caries a tone distinctly its own, though they do share a common, ahem, thematic bond .

Perched at the bar of a snazzy Cuban nightclub, Paloma (De Armas) comes onscreen disarmingly wide-eyed and unserious (“I’ve done three weeks’ training!”) — but she proves robotically precise at her actual job when it counts. In that implausibly too-competent fashion that all the Bond movies are beloved for, de Armas kicks butt in an impeccable blue velvet dress while tag-teaming terrorists alongside 007 — all while finding time, in a split-second break from all the bullet-spraying chaos — to pour out and down a couple of nerve-steeling liquor shots.

Palmona (Ana de Armas) wears a deep neck dress in No Time to Die (2021).

It would be a shame if the franchise doesn’t find an excuse to reintroduce Paloma when Craig’s 007 successor finally does arrive in some future film, because de Armas brings a verve and humor to every moment she’s onscreen. “Next time, stay longer,” Paloma half-jokes to Bond as she makes her way-too-early exit from the movie — and if there’s any balanced justice in the larger James Bond movie-verse, we’re definitely hoping the same for her.

Felix’s role in No Time to Die is a bit more expansive than Paloma’s, but the emotional weight of Wright’s performance all comes down to a pivotal scene where it’s clear the audience is seeing him in a James Bond movie for the last time. The key moment happens right after Paloma bows out and things immediately go sideways, with Bond and Felix stranded in the bowels of a boat after being double-crossed (and Felix mortally shot) by Felix’s supposedly loyal new field-agent partner in Cuba.

James Bond (Daniel Craig) tends to a wounded Felix (Jeffrey Wright) in No Time to Die (2021).

With the boat bombed and sinking and taking on water, Felix essentially passes the torch of foiling Spectre’s evil plan to Bond to carry forward on his behalf. Even (or perhaps especially) in his final moments, it’s Felix’s way of showing that he and Bond are really special-agent birds of a feather. Though these two human bloodhounds might hail from opposite sides of the international pond, they each share the same instinct for getting the bad guy — no matter the personal cost. “It’s a good life, isn’t it?” Felix breathes as his dying words to Bond — and with full heartbreaking conviction, James responds, “The best.”

Both de Armas and Wright appear in (and then vanish from) the film in its first hour, lending No Time to Die some much needed momentum before picking up its twisting, complicated larger plot in the movie’s back half. More importantly, each makes their departure long before the audience has seen nearly enough of them, giving viewers an emotional hook to stay invested in all the insane hoops our hero will subsequently jump through just to ensure that their contributions matter in the end.

Thanks to the film’s infamously bittersweet ending (which there’s no reason to spoil here), Bond finishes his journey assured that his accomplices’ actions do matter. One might be a heart-stirring sacrifice and the other a hopeful sign of future Bond things to come — but together, de Armas and Wright remain high points in the closing chapter of Craig’s epic and remarkable movie stint in Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

No Time To Die James Bond yacht Spirit 46

James Bond yachts: The best boats that have welcomed 007 on board

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Gentleman spy James Bond may be known for his love of fast cars and fancy gadgets, but agent 007 has also spent a fair share of time at sea on board a number of sailing yachts, superyachts and speedboats. To celebrate the highly anticipated release of the 25th Bond film, No Time To Die , we take a look at the best boats to be featured in the movie franchise.

No Time To Die: Spirit 46

In the latest James Bond instalment, No Time To Die (2021), James Bond is seen enjoying his (temporary) retirement in Jamaica on board a 14 metre Spirit 46 sailing yacht . As well as using the yacht for a day of fishing out on the water, 007 sails her to Cuba for an undercover mission in partnership with new agent Paloma.

Built in Ipswich by British yard and official James Bond partner Spirit Yachts , the boat is a custom-made modern classic characterised by long overhangs and flush decks. She can reach 18 knots underway and acquired her “well-loved” look by forfeiting her scheduled winter refit prior to shooting, revealed Spirit Yachts CEO Sean McMillan.

Casino Royale: Soufrière

In 2006 film Casino Royale , which introduced new James Bond actor Daniel Craig, a 16.4 metre Spirit 54’ named Soufrière was used to host 007 and Bond girl Vesper Lynd (played by Eva Green) as the couple cruised through the waters of Venice in Italy. Filming took a total of six months and involved shipping and cruising the modern classic sailing yacht to various locations around the world. The yacht even made history as the first sailing yacht to go up the Venetian Grand Canal in 300 years, a process that involved removing and replacing the rig as many as 10 times to ensure the yacht could fit under multiple canal bridges in Venice.

Casino Royale: Sunseeker predator 108

In contrast to the traditional-looking Spirit 54’ used in scenes with Vesper Lynd, a speedy Sunseeker Predator 108 motor yacht is also used in the 2006 Bond film Casino Royale . The 32.92 metre motor yacht was used in the movie as the boat of Bond villain Le Chiffre. Featuring a distinctive monochromatic hull, the Sunseeker superyacht can hit top speeds of 40 knots and can accommodate up to eight guests and four crew on board.

GoldenEye: Northern Cross

In the 1995 Bond film GoldenEye , which was the first in the franchise to feature actor Pierce Brosnan as the main character, a 43.25 metre superyacht named Manticore plays a starring role. In the film, the yacht is owned by the Janus crime syndicate and is used by Bond girl Xenia Onatopp, played by actress Famke Janssen. In reality, the yacht used for the role of Manticore was actually named Northern Cross . Constructed in aluminium by Swedish shipyard Marinteknik Verkstads AB , she was delivered in 1991.

Her exterior and naval architecture were designed by Per Kavli . Her 330 GT interiors, styled by Tor Hinders , can accommodate up to 10 guests and eight crew. Under the power of two Caterpillar diesel engines, Northern Cross can reach a top speed is 24 knots and boats a cruising range of 1,800 nautical miles at a speed of 15 knots. She features a pale grey hull and and a flybridge with an al fresco lounge.

Never Say Never Again: Kingdom 5KR

In the final film to star Sean Connery as James Bond, a superyacht named Flying Saucer is used as a base for Bond villain and SPECTRE agent Maximillian Largo. In actuality, the superyacht the starred in the 1983 film Never Say Never Again was Benetti superyacht Kingdom 5KR . Measuring 85.9 metres with an interior volume of 1,768 GT, Kingdom 5KR was designed by Jon Bannenberg and delivered in 1983. Her interiors, penned by Luigi Sturchio , can accommodate up to 22 guests waited on by 31 members of crew. Once owned by former US president Donald Trump , the yacht features a distinctive turquoise stripe along her hull and boat.

James Bond: 7 Biggest Surprises In No Time To Die

No time to die: 8 ways it's like no other bond movie, 10 ways no time to die is craig's best bond.

  • No Time To Die' s shocking ending sees Bond sacrifice himself, but the promise of his return signifies a new chapter for the franchise.
  • Craig's reinvention of Bond paves the way for a fresh perspective, ensuring the 007 franchise continues to evolve post-Craig's era.
  • While the death of Bond in No Time To Die marks an end, the series' enduring popularity ensures a new actor will take up the mantle.

Despite the movie's dramatic climax and seemingly definitive sense of finality, No Time To Die still declares that " James Bond will return ". Although the signature title card is a regular feature in the Bond series, the promise that 007 would be back was a surprise given No Time To Die's conclusion. Since the Bond movies remain a hugely profitable franchise another film wasn't in much doubt, but unlike other James Bond movies, No Time To Die takes the radical decision to kill Bond during the film's conclusion.

Daniel Craig's James Bond is forced to make the terrible choice between saving himself and ensuring the facility's destruction in No Time To Die's ending. He opts for the latter, sacrificing himself in order to destroy the base and save the world. No Time To Die's ending is tough to watch, even if the literal and more figurative deaths of Craig's Bond tie his segment of the franchise up quite nicely. In addition to the bittersweet nature of No Time To Die's conclusion, there are also plenty of lingering questions by the time the film's credit card hits the screen.

Bond 26: Who Could Play Bond & Everything We Know

The Daniel Craig 007 era ended with the release of No Time to Die, but what comes next? Here's everything that's been revealed about Bond 26.

How Can There Be Another James Bond If He’s Dead?

The no time to die ending simply signified a passing of the torch.

Bond's death in No Time To Die represents the definitive end of Daniel Craig's tenure in the role , the revelation that James Bond will return might seem slightly surprising. However, both because of the enduring popularity of the franchise and the character's historic reinvention, there are several reasons why the 007 franchise will continue to expand after the departure of Daniel Craig and the death of its titular character. In fact, given the wider historical context of the James Bond character, the promise of a new evolution for the franchise is actually extremely exciting.

Craig's entire time in the role has made it clear just how it's possible to successfully re-imagine the character

A key consideration when discussing whether James Bond has a future post-Craig is the continuing popularity of the character. The James Bond franchise is already among the most financially successful of all time, netting an estimated $14.2 billion before the release of No Time To Die . As a result, killing such a lucrative cash cow simply doesn't make sense. In addition, despite the self-contained story arc running throughout Craig's films, Bond has always been capable of reinventing itself with little care for continuity.

Craig's entire time in the role has made it clear just how it's possible to successfully re-imagine the character without destroying the long-established legacy. Although No Time To Die's ending is definitely a significant chapter in the history of the James Bond films, there are plenty of ways to bring a fresh perspective to the character, completely separate from what's come before. As such, Bond's return was always going to be a matter of how, rather than if, James Bond would return.

No Time To Die's shocking conclusion may well mean that interest in the next installment will be even higher than usual — with intense speculation over the possible direction of the character and the wider Bond narrative. A new James Bond actor could fuel an increased demand from audiences, ensuring the continued success of the saga.

Another vital factor when considering a post-Craig future for Bond is that, although killing his character in No Time To Die is certainly a bold move, the wider context around the James Bond movies means that it was never going to be a definitive step. While the movie represents an end of sorts, it was never going to bring the entire saga to a close.

7 Ways No Time To Die Already Impacted 007's Rebooted Timeline

No Time To Die shaped Bond 26's reboot of the 007 series, since the sequel ensured there are a lot of things future James Bond movies can't do soon.

Who Will Be The Next James Bond?

There are several candidates for the new 007.

At this point, it's unclear who will return as James Bond after Daniel Craig's exit, but there's an exciting list of possible contenders. For years, rumors have circulated around the likes of Tom Hardy, James Norton, Idris Elba, Cillian Murphy, Henry Cavill, Regé-Jean Page, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and more regarding who will assume Craig's mantle.

All have proven they have the acting chops for a role like Bond, especially having played serious and/or tough parts in other projects. With the acting capacity for such a tone in mind, it's clear how the actors could each make James Bond's character their own, while also continuing the franchise with an approach that remains similar to Daniel Craig's iteration.

There's been controversy around the idea of Idris Elba taking over as Bond in recent years. There was a notable amount of backlash against the concept of changing the MI6 agent's skin color. In 2014, Elba was specifically mentioned as a solid casting option for the part in a leaked e-mail from a senior executive at Sony Pictures, thus sending rumors swirling.

Elba has voiced disappointment over this widespread, negative reaction, even telling People that he was " disheartened " by it. Despite this, he did say that he would still take the role if it was offered to him when James Bond will return. This is phenomenal news, as he's proven on The Wire (as Stringer Bell) and Luther (as the show's titular detective) that he knows how to effectively inhabit a fierce, and often simultaneously smooth, character.

The main problem with the argument against changing Bond's race is that, if No Time To Die has proven anything, it's that the series' main character can be modified. Daniel Craig's James Bond has shown that the character can even be killed off without putting the franchise to rest for good or damaging a sense of continuity. With one Bond dead, another will undoubtedly emerge. And, when moving on to another actor to be the face of James Bond , filmmakers will have extensive freedom in who they pick for the role; the proverbial door has been left wide open after Craig's departure.

Daniel Craig's long-awaited fifth and final film in the role of James Bond, No Time to Die, packs more than a few surprising twists and turns.

Daniel Craig's James Bond Was One Of The Most Significant So Far

The most recent bond actor redefined the franchise.

In the 2000s, the James Bond franchise was in a tough spot. The world had watched Pierce Brosnan take the role and look perfect as 007. However, while Brosnan looked the part, he continued the tongue-in-cheek nature of the Roger Moore era. While Moore took the franchise into space and sustained an absurdist atmosphere throughout most of his appearances, Timothy Dalton's more grounded portrayal was not something fans were ready for yet. Brosnan picked up where Moore left off, with everything culminating with an invisible castle. By the time Daniel Craig took the role, fans were tired of that.

Craig's James Bond ushered in a new era that brought 007 back to the role of a box office champion once again.

Instead, movies like The Bourne Identity had taken storylines that would have fit Sean Connery's James Bond and grounded it in reality. While many fans hated Craig as Bond when he was cast because he was blonde, all it took was Casino Royale to win them over. Craig's James Bond ushered in a new era that brought 007 back to the role of a box office champion once again. This was because Craig took Bond back to the Sean Connery days. However, unlike Connery and his violent tendencies, Craig's Bond was a blunt instrument while also vulnerable with tragic flaws.

By the end of his run as James Bond, Daniel Craig had reinvented 007 for a new post-9/11 generation, and he helped erase the over-the-top bombastic Pierce Brosnan movies . It won't take long, but James Bond will return, and when he does, he has a lot to live up to. Craig was lucky to step into the role after Pierce Brosnan wore out his welcome. Whoever replaces Craig has big shoes to fill, and the franchise has to find the perfect person to carry the role without missing a step.

While No Time to Die is a welcome return to the traditional James Bond formula, it also does a few things that no Bond movie has ever done before.

What Daniel Craig Said About James Bond's Death

The departing 007 fully supported the decision.

While the question of how there can be another James Bond if he's dead lingers, the decision to kill off Daniel Craig's Bond was an obvious one for Craig himself. He initially had a lot of reservations about playing 007. He was wary of the idea of playing one role for so long, and he spoke publicly about his dissatisfaction with some of the movies as well as the demands of the role. As it turns out, those factors helped to bring about the idea of killing off Bond way back in 2006. Craig told Variety :

I don’t know if it sounds disingenuous, I said to Barbara a long time ago, back in 2006, ‘If I do all of these movies, and we get it right, can we kill him off,’ and she said, ‘Yes, you can.’ And I was thinking about myself, about my postponed career and I was trying to think of how that would work and but I was also thinking what they did with Casino Royale – they had the chance to reset with that because they went back to the beginning. I thought you’ll have a chance to reset again. That kind seems to be like a good move.

It was a bold idea from Craig so early on in his tenure as Bond, but his making that realization made it clear that he understood the franchise and what could be done with it. Craig is also right to credit Casino Royale for helping make Bond's death in No Time to Die possible, as it rebooted the franchise while also bringing back Judi Dench's M from the Brosnan era. It helped to establish that continuity between these movies is not really that important and freed the franchise to take more risks. Craig also acknowledges there is obviously more to come:

He’s not really dead. I’m gone, but it says right at the end [of No Time to Die ] that Bond will return, so he must return at some point.

From the presence of strong supporting characters to the way music ties into the plot, Daniel Craig's last James Bond film might just be his best.

Everything Known About The Future Of James Bond

Bond 26 will be a soft reboot.

While James Bond may have died at the end of No Time To Die, it's little surprise that the 26th James Bond movie is confirmed and in development. Details about the return of 007 have been kept tightly under wraps so far, and the next film after No Time To Die has yet to be given an official title or release date. The only tangible detail about Bond 26 so far is that it will be a soft reboot, reinventing the franchise after the Daniel Craig era just as Craig did himself with Casino Royale.

The unsubstantiated reports that Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be the new 007 does seem to be the most concrete rumors about the future of the franchise so far.

As for who will play James Bond, it's still not been made clear. However, there have been strong rumors that Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been offered the role, although the star has yet to confirm this himself (and neither have the studio). While it's not been made official yet, the unsubstantiated reports that Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be the new 007 does seem to be the most concrete rumors about the future of the franchise so far.

If he is indeed the new James Bond it would be a fitting choice. His experience with movies like Bullet Train and Tenet show that he's got solid action experience to take over as 007 after Daniel Craig's version perished in No Time To Die.

4 dead as severe storms hit Houston area; hundreds of thousands lose power in Texas

Emergency crews in southeast Texas were clearing debris and assessing flooding on Friday after powerful storms tore through the state , killing at least four people and knocking out power to nearly 800,000 customers.

The winds — which reached 100 mph — were reminiscent of 2008's Hurricane Ike , one of the costliest natural disasters in American history, Houston Mayor John Whitmire said in a briefing Thursday. A widespread 3 to 6 inches of rain fell north of Houston, with one of the highest totals reaching around 6.9 inches in 24 hours near Romayor.

The storm also battered New Orleans overnight, with severe thunderstorms and flooding possible again through Saturday morning, according to the local branch of the National Weather Service .

In Texas, the destruction was evident even before sunrise, with high winds tearing out windows of high-rise buildings in downtown Houston and inundating the region with flooding. Streets were littered with glass, electrical lines and other detritus.

“I know that many people lived through, and are still living through, scary situations with the terrible strong winds that blew across our county tonight," Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said in a statement Friday morning.

"Damage assessments are ongoing, and we cannot know how long it will take to clear debris without those assessments completed, but from initial reports the debris looks very significant," Hidalgo said.

Classes were canceled for the 400,000 students in the Houston Independent School District.

Officials urged all but essential employees to work from home if possible, and the Houston Police Department told residents to avoid traveling downtown.

Two of the four people who died in Texas were killed by falling trees, while a third died when a crane blew over, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said at a news briefing. No information was given about the fourth. Whitmire said a possible fifth death is being investigated, but it’s not yet clear if it was related to the weather.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott thanked emergency personnel in a statement, saying work is ongoing to assist communities affected by the storms.

“Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives due to severe weather in Southeast Texas, and we remain in contact with local officials to do everything we can to protect Texans and help our communities recover,” Abbott said.

At one point, more than 900,000 customers were without power statewide; that remained true for around 670,000 as of 3 p.m. CT,  according to poweroutage.us . Nearly all of those were in Houston’s Harris County.

Heat and humidity in the city will ramp up into the weekend, which could lead to health concerns if power is not restored quickly. Temperatures could be as high as 91 degrees with a heat index of 97.

Across Houston, photos and videos on social media showed intense flooding and downed trees, as well as toppled electrical towers and power lines .

In a video posted to Facebook , rain was seen leaking into Minute Maid Park, where the Houston Astros play. Another video showed baseball fans leaving the stadium amid the bad weather.

Strong winds appeared to have blown off roof panels at a Hyatt Regency Hotel in Houston, a video posted to X showed. Other footage shared on the platform showed blown out windows in a building in the city's Wells Fargo Plaza.

Severe Weather in Houston Texas

Whitmire described downtown Houston as a “mess” and warned that “many roads are impassible due to downed power lines, debris, and fallen trees.”

Firefighters were removing live wires from Route 290 and most city traffic lights were down, he added.

In Louisiana, the severe weather knocked out electricity for some 215,000 customers, many in and around New Orleans. Around 115,000 remained without power as of Friday morning.

A swath of the southeast coast, stretching from Louisiana, through Mississippi, Alabama and into the Florida Panhandle, was under a flood watch early Friday.

The National Weather Service said in an afternoon update that unsettled weather, including the possibility of excessive rainfall and severe thunderstorms, will persist across the Southeast through Saturday.

Around 7 million people along the central Gulf Coast remain under flood watches.

“A few tornadoes, scattered damaging winds, and hail all appear possible over the central/eastern Gulf Coast area,” according to the National Weather Service.

The agency also noted a risk of severe thunderstorms in portions of the northern Plains through Friday evening.

Leon schools scraps bus service, delays start time Monday; SAIL, Sabal Palm to remain closed

sailboat in no time to die

All Leon County public schools will be open Monday except SAIL High School and Sabal Palm Elementary School, Leon Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna said on Facebook Live Sunday night.

Two tornadoes swept through Tallahassee early Friday, leaving the city in disbelief – and in the dark . Hanna said power has been restored at almost all schools, though there will be some changes in school day routines for students and parents.

“Tomorrow we're going to make some adjustments but we are going to have our schools open that have power and the capacity to accept students,” Hanna said.

He also said school buses will not operate because of road hazards such as downed trees and power lines. Student absences will be excused for hardships and all school start times will be delayed by 30 minutes. No students will be on the ACE, or Lively campus, including the Pre-K program, he added.

“Although my personal vehicle can navigate the roads, our buses are just not going to be able to pull it off. There's too many lines that are still down, trees that are leaning over there, and our buses can't clear,” Hanna said.

Despite the changes, dismissal times will be the same, before-school supervision will still be available and cafeteria meals will be served.

But Advanced Placement and Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) exams will be rescheduled because of internet instability. Hanna said all LCS staff should report to work as normal.

The 30-minute delay sets the elementary school start time back to 9 a.m., the middle school start time to 10 a.m., and the high school start time to 8 a.m., to give parents time to manage transportation for their students.

In a separate email, SAIL High School Principal Matt Roberson told students and families he "anticipates power to be restored for students to return on Tuesday."

Richard "Rick" Slayman, the first human to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant, has died almost two months after the procedure.

Slayman, who had end-stage kidney disease, underwent the transplant in March at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston at age 62.

The hospital said in a statement on Saturday that there was "no indication" that his death was the result of the transplant. The transplant surgeon had said he hoped the transplant would function for at least two years.

"The Mass General transplant team is deeply saddened at the sudden passing of Mr. Rick Slayman," read the hospital statement. "Mr. Slayman will forever be seen as a beacon of hope to countless transplant patients worldwide and we are deeply grateful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation."

First human transplant of a genetically modified pig kidney performed.

The surgery was a milestone for the field of xenotransplantation — the transplant of organs from one species to another — as a way to alleviate the organ shortage for people who need transplants. The effort to genetically modify animal organs is in hopes that the human body will not reject the foreign tissue.

In a statement from shared by the hospital, Slayman's family thanked his doctors: "Their enormous efforts leading the xenotransplant gave our family seven more weeks with Rick, and our memories made during that time will remain in our minds and hearts."

His family said he was kind, quick-witted, and "fiercely dedicated to his family, friends, and co-workers."

"After his transplant, Rick said that one of the reasons he underwent this procedure was to provide hope for the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive," it continued. "Rick accomplished that goal and his hope and optimism will endure forever."

Last month, a 54-year-old New Jersey woman became the second person ever to have a genetically modified pig kidney transplant.

More than 100,000 people in the U.S. are on the waitlist for organs. Thousands die every year before they can get one.
