Beginning with the introduction of the Hinckley 36 Picnic Boat in 1994, the market for Downeast yachts has exploded in recent years to become a major segment of the U.S. yachting industry. Dominated by such top-tier manufacturers as Sabre, Hinckley, Grand Banks, MJM and Back Cove, modern Downeast yachts are often built one at a time with the owner working closely with the builder. As anyone with experience shopping the new or used Downeast market will confirm, these dream machines are always priced at the high end of the market compared with other boats their size; indeed, the entry point for many models exceeds $1 million. With that said, the eight Downeast cruisers featured below can often be found on the brokerage market at prices under $600,000 — not cheap by any means but more affordable by far than buying new.

Eastbay 49 SX/HX   | 1999–2008

At a Glance: Classic Downeast styling with traditional Grand Banks construction and craftsmanship – the SX model has a fully enclosed salon while the HX model has semi-enclosed helm open to the cockpit. Eastbay 49’s elegant salon is three steps up from the cockpit and features a comfortable L-shaped settee with teak high-low table. Two power Stidd helm chairs swivel to face the salon and a flat-screen TV is mounted in a cabinet. Note the power center windshield panel.

The U-shaped galley is down with Sub Zero refrigeration, Corian counters and lounge seating to starboard with another TV. Forward, the master stateroom has an island berth and head with separate stall shower. The guest stateroom has twin berths with a day head opposite. Built on a Hunt-designed modified deep-V hull, Cat 705hp Cat C12 diesels cruise at 24–26 knots (30+ top). Price Range:  From the low $400s.

Eastbay 45 | 2007–09

At a Glance:   Beautifully crafted Downeast cruiser designed by the Raymond Hunt Group and built by Grand Banks. The standard two stateroom, single head interior has the galley down and a spacious main salon with a U-shaped settee to port surrounding a teak high-low table. An alternate layout with a second head compartment has the galley in the port aft corner of the salon with a convenient pass-thru for food and drinks.

A retractable sunroof is standard and the forward center windshield opens at the push of a button for ventilation. The master stateroom is forward with island berth and ensuite head. The guest cabin with twin berths is just aft on the starboard side. A Stidd helm chair is standard and huge salon windows provide panoramic views of the water. A timeless yacht, the Eastbay 45 SX will cruise at 24 knots with Cat C-9 567hp diesels. Price Range: From the mid $400s.  

Hinckley 44 EX | 1999–2008

At a Glance: An enlarged version of Hinckley’s iconic 36 Picnic Boat. The heart of the Talaria is her spacious semi-enclosed deckhouse with its plush furnishings and handcrafted teak joinery. Forward is the helm area to starboard and navigator chair to port. Aft of the port chair is a L-shaped settee with varnished teak table on an electric pedestal that drops down to form an additional bunk with cushion.

To starboard is a second L-shaped settee with a small bolster cushion forward. (The settees can be raised on hydraulic rams for access to the engines.) The Talaria was offered with one or two staterooms. Neither layout can be called roomy Hinckley 44 EX craftsmanship is on display throughout. Notable features include aft-facing cockpit seating, wide side decks (but no bow rails), and Hinckley’s JetStick control system. A top-selling boat, Yanmar 420hp diesels matched to Hamilton waterjets cruise at 24 knots.

Price Range:  From the mid $400s.

Back Cove 41 | 2007–15

At a Glance:   One of the best-selling yachts in her class, the Back Cove 41 is a single engine cruiser whose timeless styling, upscale accommodations and efficient operation hit the sweet spot with sophisticated owners. The focus of her balanced interior arrangement is on two comfortable staterooms each with a private head. The centralized galley location serves the open air cockpit as easily as the salon.

A roomy cockpit with corner settees, aft-facing seat and center transom door will appeal to outdoor pursuits, and wide side decks make getting around easy. An electrically operated window in the aft bulkhead combines with a bi-fold glass door to open the main deck to the cockpit. A cockpit hatch provides quick access to the engine room for daily checks. Bow and stern thrusters are standard. A single Volvo 725hp inboard will cruise at 22–24 knots.

Price Range: From just over $500K.

Eastbay 39 SX | 2006–12

At a Glance: The Eastbay 39 SX is an updated version of the popular Eastbay 38, the boat that launched the Eastbay series in 1994. She was available in two configurations: the SX features a fully enclosed salon while the HX model has a semi-enclosed helm deck with no aft bulkhead. (Nearly all Eastbay 39s were SX models.) The accommodations include a spacious salon/helm deck on the main level with a Stidd helm seat and corner L-settee.

Outside views from any seat in the salon are excellent. Ventilation is abundant as well with a windshield center section that opens, sliding side windows and two overhead hatches. Down three steps is a U-shaped dinette to port, galley with Corian counters, and large head with a curved shower enclosure. Forward is a private stateroom with island queen bed. Built on a Hunt-designed deep-V , Yanmar 480hp diesels cruise at 26 knots (about 30 knots top).

Price Range: From the mid $300s.

Sabre 38 Salon Express | 2013–Current

At a Glance:   The Sabre 38 Salon Express is a premium Downeast cruiser with a fully enclosed salon and pod drive propulsion. Hull construction is resin infusion with bi-axial stringers bonded to a foam core to reduce weight. The interior layout—5″ above the cockpit level—allows for an open-plan salon with more living space than one expects in an express yacht this size. A U-shaped settee with fixed table is to port.

To starboard, aft of the Stidd helm seat, is a long cabinet housing an LED television and storage compartments. On the lower level are the master stateroom with island berth and a huge head compartment with separate stall shower. A full-service galley is opposite, within easy reach of the salon and well lit with natural lighting. In the salon the large rear window in the aft bulkhead drops down to open the salon to the outdoors. Twin 300hp Volvo pod drives (with joystick controls) cruise at 24–26 knots.

Price Range:   From about $500K.

Back Cove 37 | 2009–Current

At a Glance:   An economical cruising yacht in the Downeast tradition — rare to find a single-engine boat in this size range. Beautifully appointed galley-up layout is ideal for two couples. Opposite the galley are two Stidd chairs for the helmsman and guest, and aft of the helm is an L-shaped settee with adjustable table and a shorter settee opposite to port.

The Back Cove 37’s enclosed salon is surrounded by large windows, and an overhead hatch provides ventilation. Folding doors completely open up the salon to the cockpit with its built-in seating and centerline transom door. Large windows provide panoramic views of the water and wide side decks make getting around easy and secure. Exceptional finish throughout. A single 480hp Cummins QSB engine delivers a top speed of 24–26 knots. Optional 600hp Cummins reach a top speed of nearly 30 knots.

MJM 36z | 2011–15

At a Glance:   A blend of Downeast styling and fuel-sipping economy, the MJM 36z is a lightweight and versatile 36-footer perfect for day cruising and weekend getaways. She’s is large enough to seat three couples in comfort and narrow enough for easy single-handed operation. The all-weather pilothouse has 6’5″ headroom and comfortably seats six — plus another 6 in the cockpit — all on the same level. Hullside doors allow for easy boarding access or to exit when handling docklines.

Below, the U-shaped lounge can seat six to watch television or socialize and have a meal. In the evening it converts to two 7-foot long twin berths. The galley is aft, positioned at the companionway for ventilation, and a Vaccu-Flush toilet and separate stall shower are standard in the head. Cruise in the mid 20s (30+ knots wide open) with twin 260hp Yanmar diesels (with joystick controls).

I've located a couple of deals on bigger boats built around 2000 with 4 cabins and in my budget but I really do not need a 70-80ft boat. With that being said did any manufacture in the early 2000's make a 60-70ft boat with 4 cabins? Sunseeker, Azimut, Hatteras, etc......

Ferretti 68. Azimut 68 Plus, Princess 20M, and or Sunseeker 74 Manhattan, and the Astondoa 72 GLX Semi customs would be Maiora 20, Sanlorenzo 72, and the Posillipo Technema 70. The Italian semi-custom would be heavier and therefore drink more. Expect 15 liters plus per nm at fast cruise (more like 17). While the above are all below 15. I know the Azimut 68 Plus is at around 13 litres per nm at fast cruise.

Hi Liam, good selection. However, I would recommend not to make fuel consumption the most important aspect. For example the SL72 will give a much better ride especially at lower speeds while the performance in terms of top speed is lower. But then a true ship needs to have the weight of a ship to sit in the water like one. It all boils down to the question of what profile of use the OP has in mind. One strength allways has to be bought with a weakness on other aspects and it´s allways a matter of the right balance for the profile of use. The Astondoa and The SanLorenzo are pretty much the antipodes in this comparison within same high build- and interiour quality.

Thanks for the replies. I would really like to stay below 70ft for insurance purposes. Also, I am in the US and some of these models are not available here currently. Fuel consumption is not a big consideration for me as I have had boats with 1550 man and 1625 mtu. I would also want to have a fly bridge.

If you are a bit flexible on the 4th cabin... Queenship 64 or 68 with Cats or MAN's. 3 staterooms plus a nice crew area. Above average quality, very nice layout.

Pacific Mariner 65's are getting to that price range. The 4th cabin is not ideal, mostly intended for crew or storage - aft of the engine room, access is a hatch under the aft deck settee.

What is the best sailing catamaran to buy (as a boat business) today?

iYachtclub has been selling catamarans and managing catamarans in our crewed yacht vacation fleet for about 14 years. Most of the boats we sell go into yacht charter first, and almost all of the buyers plan to do the same thing- go cruising after a few years of having the boat “pay for itself”. In recent years, the dynamics of boat buying has changed, making the decision even more difficult. With used boats holding value and even increasing in value, and new boat pricing going up…and up, if you are in the market right now, what is the right move? While I understand that boat buying is personal, and you should buy the boat that “moves” you, in the end, if you are buying a boat as a business there is a “right boat” and “wrong boats”. For my purposes of picking the best charter boat right now, I use the following parameters.

1.  Bedrooms. Bedrooms are number one. There is no such thing as a perfect boat. The boat you will hopefully sail away on in 3 to 5 years is not the boat you buy for charter. So, I contend that you should buy a perfect charter boat now, and IF, you go sailing, turn that perfect charter boat into a perfect cruising boat later. You can always take bedrooms out before you go. Buy the boat that makes money now.

2.  Simplicity. Pick a manufacturer that allows you to keep it simple. Like with bedrooms, you can always add water makers, solar, superior battery systems, dishwashers, washer/driers…. Later. None of that makes money in charter. It gets old, it gets worn. The right boat now is simple. Easy to maintain, cheap to maintain. Period. Simple systems work as well as complex ones, parts are easier, support is more readily available, and even I can fix simple systems.

3.  Bigger is better. Focus on bigger boats, with various and diverse seating areas. Bigger boats charter better, with higher profit margins, and, when you make your move to live aboard you will thank me later. Even a family of two needs the ability to have a place to sit with all points of the sun and wind.

So, given those 3 predefined criteria for the “perfect” charter yacht, I’d like to break down the decision into four categories, picking my “best boat” for each level.

Just getting started charter yacht.

For this category, I’m assuming an entry point of $600k to $800k This includes boats like the Bali 4.2, FP 40 to 42 foot models, and the Lagoons and Leopards in the same price point. It also includes all small yard and custom options.

In this category I have a tie (sorry). I like two different boats for two different reasons. First, I like the Bali 42, configured for charter with four staterooms and 4 heads, with two showers. This boat works well in bareboat and crewed charter. She hits all of my other criteria re: systems and the ability to upgrade easily. And she delivers charters at a price point that delivers a good ROI until you go cruising. Additionally, I live on a Bali 43 (same boat basically) and she lives and feel bigger than a Saba 50/Leopard 50. Send me an email and I’ll send you real profit statements from this boat over a multi-year period. Tied with this boat is the new Cervetti 44 from Dufour Catamarans. While the Bali 4.2 delivers a big boat feel in a small boat, the Cervetti 44 is a small yard, very high-quality alternative. She can be built as a 4, 6 or 8 pax boat, feels like she is 50 feet or more due to her big beam, and has far superior quality/fit/finish to her larger competitors. This boat, new, fully configured under 800k is both a bargain and a great charter/cruising boat that produces a great ROI. “sweet spot” perfect charter boat. 

Stopping up from the $600-$800 range takes us to charter boats in the $900k to $1.2M price range and includes the FP51, Lagoon 50, Leopard 50 and Bali 4.8. We sell more boats in this range than any other range.

Again, sorry, in this category I find myself with a tie. The market has pretty much rejected the layout of the FP51. And, the forward cockpit and flybridge of the Leopard 50 is nice, but the build quality and delivery times are terrible. So, today, in this price range I’d choose the Bali 4.8 or the Dufour/Cervetti 48. And, honestly, while I’m a big fan of the open concept Bali 48, for $200,000 less, I’d personally choose the Dufour 48. We love that both the Bali 48 and Dufour 48 can easily take 8 to 10 vacations plus crew. These boats fill up at $22k to 28k per week, creating very nice per charter returns, they are easy to maintain and have wide market appeal.

Step’n up for the perfect ROI.

If you can go up from the 1M to 1.2M range, and you don’t want to completely break the bank, there is really only one option…. The Bali 5.4. Until recently, you could buy “the perfect charter boat” for $1.2 to $1.3M. Now, at $1.5M this remains the winner from an ROI percentage perspective. Configured with six cabins and two bow cabins, this boat can deliver vacations to 12 to 14 people, at price points approaching $40k per week (more than $30k GP per week). The Bali 5.4 is truly the perfect charter yacht, and maybe even the “perfect” yacht. Recently I told a friend in St. Thomas that I was going to buy a Bali 4.2 to live on. He said “why not a 5.4”? I said “I don’t want that much boat to take care of…” and he replied, “they both have two engines, one gen, same electronics… what is “more” to maintain?” He had a good point. Buy bigger…. It works better as a business, and they really are not more to maintain if they have simple systems. The 5.4 is perfect. Simply perfect. More money than brains boat.

A little back story here. My dad has said since I was 30 that I had more money than brains, so this is my favorite category. If someone told me in 2008 when I entered the yachting industry, after a long career in IT, that buying a bigger boat made more sense than buying a smaller boat, I would have laughed at them. But the reality is, it is true. Bigger boats equal bigger revenue. Cost to deliver trips is shockingly similar to smaller boats. And the math just works better. So what do you do if you have $2M plus to spend on a boat toy? The answer is- buy from small yard. In this category I include the FP 58 and 67, the big Lagoons, and the Sunreef 60 and 70. All of these have price points in excess of $3M, some of them over $5M. All of them are great boats. All of them have some serious build quality issues, particularly when you consider the cost. So consider this… for $2.6 to $2.8M you an buy a Moon 60. They look and feel like a Sunreef 60. They have far superior build quality when compared to the big FP and Lagoons, and they rent at the same high per week rate. For these reasons, in the high-end luxury market, Moon wins. These are my opinions. Don’t shoot me! But my opinions are based on 15 years in the business, most of that spent managing yachts and helping owners monetize their yachts. That is the perspective I bring to the table. There is certainly no perfect yacht. And I do believe that buyers should buy the boat they love, regardless of brand. 40m Westport motor yacht Pipe Dream sold

The 39.6-metre Westport motor yacht Pipe Dream has been sold with Thom Conboy and Chris Collins of Ocean Independence representing the buyer and Alex Rogers of Northrop & Johnson representing the seller.

Pipe Dream was delivered in 2013 as a Westport 130 model. She was built in GRP to a design by Greg Marshall and was the recipient of recent refits in 2020 and 2021.

The broker described Pipe Dream as "welcoming and spacious" with accommodation for 10 guests and a crew of six. Guest accommodation is split across five cabins, comprising a main-deck king master suite and four lower-deck cabins, two doubles and two twins. 

Ample deck spaces provide a platform for enjoying on-water entertainment, al fresco dining and relaxation, with the aft deck bar proving to be a popular spot on board. A dining table for 10 is also located here and the deck provides direct access to the swimming platform.

Pipe Dream 's boat deck also has a bar, as well as a grill and tender storage. It leads up to the sundeck with its sunloungers, 10-seater high-gloss dining table and large Jacuzzi surrounded by sunpads. The foredeck also has seating around a table where guests can enjoy views forward while underway.

Twin MTU engines deliver a cruising speed of 18 knots and a maximum speed of 24 knots. The 333GT vessel has a 3,000 nautical mile range.

Pipe Dream was asking $17,395,000.

The hefty monthly sum includes $360,000 for crew wages, $75,000 for fuel, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food, and other expenses, according to court papers filed Friday in New York.

“The carrying costs for the Amadea are far from modest, and there is good cause to spare the government and the public from bearing these costs,” the filing states.

It’s not just the monthly payments piling up, either. The U.S. Justice Department said it is paying a $1.7 million annual insurance bill this month. It will also need to fork out $5.6 million to send Amadea into dry dock for repairs in March. (The monthly payments will be suspended during this time.)

The court will first need to determine who owns Amadea before it decides the vessel’s fate. Millemarin Investments is the legal owner on paper, but the U.S. alleges that Kerimov is the beneficial owner and exercises control. To further complicate things, Eduard Khudainatov, the former head of Russian oil producer Rosneft, is claiming that he is the rightful owner. He hasn’t been sanctioned by the U.S. and wants Amadea back.

Lawyers for Khudainatov said that their client would reimburse the U.S. for the cost of maintaining the yacht if it is returned to him. (The country has spent about $20 million on Amadea to date.) The lawyers added that the seizure was “unlawful.”

China Deploys Dozens of Ships to Block Philippine Protest Flotilla

Filipino civilians set sail in fishing boats to oppose China’s control of a shoal claimed by the Philippines. A formidable Chinese fleet awaited them.

China has sent dozens of coast guard and maritime militia vessels toward a disputed atoll in the South China Sea, a large show of force aimed at blocking a civilian protest flotilla from the Philippines, as tensions between the countries have flared.

The Filipino group organizing the flotilla of about 100 small fishing boats, led by five slightly bigger ones, said it wanted to assert the Philippines’ claims to Scarborough Shoal , an atoll controlled by Beijing that is closer to Manila.

But even before the motley Philippine fleet set out on Wednesday morning, China deployed a formidable contingent of much bigger government-run ships to the area, an intimidating escalation of its frequent assertions of control over vast expanses of sea far from its mainland.

“What we’re seeing this time, I would say, is definitely of another order,” said Ray Powell, the director of SeaLight , a group that monitors the South China Sea. “I think that the China Coast Guard is concerned that they’re going to try to sort of get too close, and so they’re sending an overwhelming force.”

Standoffs and close brushes between Filipino coast guard or civilian vessels and China’s larger coast guard and militia ships — which have used powerful water cannons to drive Philippine vessels away — have become more frequent in the past two years. This time, the size of the Chinese presence and the large number of civilian Filipino boats could make any encounter near the shoal more risky, Mr. Powell said.

“If China decides that they want to send the message that says, ‘We’ve had enough of this,’ then the scary thing you would not want to see is one of these small Filipino fishing boats hit by a water cannon, because that would not end well,” he said.

Rafaela David, one of the leaders of Atin Ito , the Filipino organization coordinating the protest at sea, said the group would not be deterred from trying to reach the atoll, which the Philippines calls Panatag Shoal. The fishing boats were expected to take about 20 hours to get there.

“We should normalize and regularize civilian access,” Ms. David said at a news briefing on Tuesday in Botolan, a town on the Philippines’ main island of Luzon. She said the number of protest boats would show that Filipinos are “not intimidated by someone as big as China.”

The group’s chances of breaking China’s hold on Scarborough Shoal , about 138 miles west of Luzon, seem slim.

By Tuesday, China had positioned five coast guard ships and six maritime militia vessels near the shoal and had another 25 or so maritime militia vessels sitting roughly 60 miles further out, said Mr. Powell, whose group is part of the Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation at Stanford University. That estimate, he added, did not include Chinese vessels that either do not carry automatic identification signal devices, which allow them to be tracked, or have turned off their devices in order to “go dark.”

Officials with the Philippine Navy and coast guard said they were deploying ships to escort the civilian Philippine flotilla.

On Wednesday, the Chinese government warned the Filipino protesters against nearing the shoal, which Beijing calls Huangyan Island.

“If the Philippine side abuses China’s good will and violates China’s territorial sovereignty and jurisdiction, China will defends its rights and take countermeasures in accordance with the law,” Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a news conference in Beijing. “The responsibility and consequences will entirely rest with the Philippine side.”

Relations between Manila and Beijing have worsened in the past two years over their maritime disputes.

Since Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was elected president of the Philippines in 2022, he has revived ties with the United States and pushed back against China’s claims to shoals and outcrops near the Philippines. Beijing, in turn, has stepped up coast guard and maritime militia operations to guard its claims.

On Monday, China’s coast guard said that it had started sea rescue training near Scarborough Shoal “to ensure the safety of people onboard vessels that are coming and going.”

Manila has also accused Beijing of taking steps to turn another disputed atoll, Sabina Shoal, which sits about 83 miles northwest of the Philippine island of Palawan, into an artificial island, and it sent a coast guard and a navy ship to the area. On Monday, Beijing rejected the accusation.

The Scarborough Shoal has been under Chinese control since 2012, when Beijing wrested it from Manila in a weekslong standoff. Filipino fishermen had long worked in the resource-rich shoal, but since then their access has been restricted and sporadic.

In 2016, an international tribunal established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea rejected China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea and ruled that the shoal is a traditional fishing ground for the Philippines, China and Vietnam. China has ignored that ruling and continued to entrench its control across much of the sea, including Scarborough Shoal.

Atin Ito, the group organizing the Philippine flotilla, is a coalition of religious activists, civic groups and organizations representing fishermen. The name means “This Is Ours,” and the group has sought to galvanize the public behind peacefully asserting the Philippines’ claims in what Manila calls the West Philippine Sea.

Atin Ito held a similar protest last year , sending boats to the Second Thomas Shoal — a disputed atoll, also known as Ayungin Shoal, that is held by Filipino navy personnel on a grounded ship. But those boats turned back after constant shadowing by Chinese vessels, which have used water cannons against Philippine ships that have tried to deliver supplies to the grounded ship.

This time, the Atin Ito mission appears larger and may be bolder. The group said it planned to drop off food and fuel for any Filipino fishing boats in the area. Along the way, the flotilla also began dropping buoys bearing the message “WPS, Atin Ito” — that is, the West Philippine Sea is ours.
