Where Can I Find a Low-Cost Yacht?

In most cases, a yacht’s price will not reflect its popularity. A yacht is a luxury item purchased for one’s use. Buying a boat is more exciting than buying a car since boats are unique and challenging to come by. Quite a variety of one-of-a-kind options are readily available.

If money is an issue, you can save the most money by purchasing a previously owned yacht. Family-friendly cruisers from respected manufacturers like Sea Ray, Carver, Hatteras, and Bertram are worth considering.

How to Find a Boat at the Best Price?

The options expand dramatically through an internet marketplace when looking for a boat. You can find thousands of new and used boats for sale on online marketplaces, and the platforms are designed to make the purchasing process simple and quick.

Is purchasing a yacht at a boat auction a viable option for finding a cheap yacht?

Do not get lured into buying a salvage boat or yacht at an auction unless you are an expert mechanic and have thoroughly inspected the vessel in question. Auctions are an excellent place to look for boats on the cheap, but whether you get a good deal or a bad one depends on your luck, talent, and experience.

Most boats at auctions are used boats that have been previously owned, however, occasionally, new boats will be available from local vendors.

Do I need a new boat, or should I get a salvage boat instead?

Salvaged boats can waste your money or cost more to restore than the boat is worth. However, you can make a profit if you have the knowledge and abilities to finish all structural repairs yourself.

Think about whether you could create a hull repair template. Are you able to make electrical fixes? If the answer is yes, then using a salvage boat might be worthwhile.

Final Advice

Our recommendation is to use extreme caution around salvage vessels. A thorough survey must first be conducted to determine a boat’s actual worth. It’s important to remember that the surveyor won’t necessarily find every problem that needs addressing.

Some problems won’t surface until you get out on the water. Some people make it their business to buy and sell salvage boats professionally. An advantage is saving a lot of money, but a disadvantage is sitting in a boat that lacks the luster of a brand-new one and is more prone to developing issues down the road.

Top-5 affordable yachts from the best shipyards

In this article, we will tell you about several well-known shipyards and their yachts that belong to the low-cost segment. The cost of a yacht trip largely depends on the chosen boat (probably even to the greatest extent on the yacht). So it is very important to choose the right budget. But at the same time, quite a comfortable and well-equipped option. Therefore, here we present the top-5 affordable yachts from the world’s best manufacturers.

The world’s best shipyards

There are not many manufacturers in this segment. Especially when we consider rather large ones with good infrastructure and technical support systems. The products of the companies described here have been holding leading positions in the markets for a long time, not only in the low-cost segment of sailing yachts but also among motorboats and catamarans .

The world’s best shipyards are located in France and Germany. Here we should mention the following ones: Jeanneau, Beneteau Dufour, Bavaria, Hanse, and Dehler. All their products have an aesthetic design, they are practical, reliable, and with good ergonomics. Good natural and synthetic materials, such as wood, glass, aluminum, and carbon are used even in low-cost models.

These manufacturers compete closely with each other, which means they try to stay in trend and use advanced modern technologies. And at the same time, all these shipyards have been on the market for a very long time, they have managed to earn the reputation of a reliable partner. Thus, for example, French Jeanneau has been building yachts for over 60 years, and the leading figure of the market, Beneteau this year celebrates its 137th anniversary! Surely, the more eminent is the brand, the more expensive are its products, but we should note that everyone has the boats in the budget segment.

Many classic models from Bavaria and Hanse have been produced by these brands for over 10 years. Indeed, they regularly undergo restyling and get some new equipment, but still, they are based on the solutions tested by time and nautical miles and they are so loved by yachtsmen.

So let’s get straight to our list.

Top-5 affordable yachts

10 Great Used Motoryachts You Can Buy For $150K

10 Great Used Motoryachts You Can Buy For $150K

January 16, 2017 1:45 pm

Consider this scenario: you’re in the market for a used motoryacht — probably nothing smaller than 40 feet — with a budget of $150,000, more or less. You want a boat from a good builder (preferably one of their more popular models), and you’re open to the layout as long as it’s comfortable. Everything else is on the table.

If that describes your boating future, you’ll be happy and perhaps a little surprised at the choices available to you in a used motoryacht or cruiser yacht .

To find out for ourselves, we spent two weeks researching this market on YachtWorld, boats.com, etc., and came away with a list of ten models that represent a cross section of what’s available for about $150,000. There’s a lot to choose from here — traditional aft cabin motor yachts, cockpit motor yachts, classic pilothouse yachts, and sporty sedan cruisers.

All of the ten boats profiled below were popular models during their production years which means (a) that a clean used model should be relatively easy to find, and (b) selling or trading up one day should be no problem.

At the end of the day it’s good to know $150,000 still buys a lot of boat. Assuming 20 percent down and a 15-year note, the monthly payment for one of these yachts can be less than $1,000. For many, that’s an affordable number, especially with strengthening home values and historically low interest rates. Food for thought as we approach the spring boat show season.

1. Carver 500/504 Cockpit MY Production Years: 1996–2000

Carver-500-504

At a Glance: A super-popular model for Carver, basically a condo on the water. This is a cockpit version of the Carver 455/456 Aft Cabin model produced during the same years.

Spacious two stateroom maple interior has a folding bulkhead in the forward VIP stateroom that conceals a small guest cabin/den to port with convertible bunks. (This feature was eliminated in 1999 when the interior was redesigned and the name changed to Carver 504.)

The large U-shaped galley is aft in the salon rather than forward as it is in most motoryacht floorplans. In the master stateroom, the walkaround queen bed faces aft to permit the installation of cockpit access door. Washer/dryer is in forward stateroom. Twin 450hp Cummins diesels cruise at 18 knots.

Best Feature: Huge interior, the result of moving the superstructure well forward in the hull (note the relatively short foredeck).

Pr ice Spread: From a low of about $150K up to the mid-to-high $200s for a newer model.

2. Carver 444 Cockpit MY Production Years: 2001 – 2006

Carver-444

At a Glance: The top-selling cockpit yacht in this class for several years. Basically a Carver 396 Aft Cabin with a good-sized cockpit. The 444’s huge full-beam interior — made possible by raising the side decks to eye level — comes as a surprise. With its panoramic views and nearly seven feet of headroom, the salon’s dimensions are those of a much larger boat.

To save space, the forward head is split with the shower stall to port and toilet compartment to starboard. A sliding glass door in the (smallish) master stateroom opens directly into the cockpit.

In 2004, an optional “Extended Salon” floorplan with a full-size dinette, enlarged galley and redesigned VIP stateroom became available. Twin Volvo 370hp engines cruise at 18–19 knots. Carver sold a ton of these stylish boats.

Best Feature: Enormous salon/dinette/galley area with panoramic outside views.

Price Spread: A random YachtWorld check will find several priced in the mid $100K range.

3. Meridian 411 Sedan Production Years: 2003 – 2008

Meridian-411

At a Glance: Very popular (and very affordable) sedan cruiser — a winning blend of sharp styling and spacious accommodations — made the Meridian 411 one of the best-selling midrange boats in her class. Huge interior layout with galley and booth-style dinette forward, a step up from the aft salon area with entertainment center and facing settees.

Large salon windows bring the outdoors in. Modern decor with cherry cabinets, Ultraleather seating, and Corian counters. Master stateroom includes private en-suite head; guest stateroom has a double berth (tucked under the dinette) and access to the second day head. Extended swim platform leads to a large cockpit (with molded bridge steps) suitable for fishing and entertaining.

Lower helm was optional. Wide side decks make it easy to get to the foredeck sun pad.

Best Feature: A super-social flybridge with sun lounge, wet bar, settee, and aft sun pad.

Price Spread:  Low-to-mid $100s to over $300K.

4. Silverton 39 Motor Yacht Production Years: 2002 – 2008

Silverton-39

At a Glance: This maxi-beam aft cabin cruiser — and her lookalike predecessor, the best-selling Silverton 372/392 Motor Yacht — is proof that a roomy interior trumps graceful styling almost every time. Elevated side decks on both sides of the house provide a huge full-beam salon as well as direct flybridge access to the foredeck.

The 39’s galley rivals many larger boats in storage and counter space. Both staterooms have queen beds, generous storage, and en-suite heads with stall shower. High-gloss cherry trim, Corian counters, and Ultraleather upholstery compliment the interior. Molded steps lead from the swim platform up to a roomy aft deck with wet bar, bench seating and hard top.

Note the triple helm seat on the flybridge. The 39’s high freeboard will test your docking skills on a windy day. Standard 380hp gas engines cruise at 16–18 knots.

Best Feature: Enormous two-stateroom interior dwarfs anything in her class. Excellent galley.

Price Spread: $150K to the mid $200s.

5. Bayliner 4788 Pilothouse Production Years: 1994 – 2002

Bayliner-4788

At a Glance: Arguably the best big-boat value ever. Spacious, well appointed, and surprisingly fuel efficient. This is basically a restyled (and lengthened) version of the very popular Bayliner 4550/4588 Pilothouse.

Her three stateroom, two head interior features a full-beam salon with large U-shaped galley forward to port, wet bar, L-lounge seating, and large side windows. In the pilothouse, there is a settee aft of the helm and a companion seat to port.

Visibility from the pilothouse is excellent. Second guest stateroom with upper/lower bunks doubles as a den and opens directly to the master stateroom — very clever. An inflatable dinghy can be carried on the extended flybridge deck. The engine room is a tight fit. Forget all that talk about Bayliner quality — the 4788 is simply a lot of boat for the money.

Best Feature: Comfortable salon that opens to the large cockpit — perfect for entertaining.

Price Spread:  Low-to-mid $100s for a 1994–95 model to $230 to $250K for a 2001–02 model.

6.  Sea Ray 550 Sedan Bridge Production Years: 1992 – 1998

Sea-Ray-550

At a Glance: Stylish 1990’s cruising yacht with three-stateroom interior and extra-large cockpit. The salon is impressive, a wide-open (carpeted) living area with cut-down galley, long leather sofa, entertainment center, and big wraparound cabin windows.

The forward master stateroom is huge with an island queen bed, two hanging lockers, vanity, and private en-suite head. Roomy guest stateroom has a full-size berth, and the second guest cabin has over/under bunks. Both heads have stall showers, but guest head is tight. Lower helm was optional. Center transom door is flanked by built-in bench seats in the cockpit.

In 1996, the flybridge ladder was replaced with molded steps and the helm was relocated aft. The 550’s straight sheer and drooping bow are distinctive. Detroit 625hp 6V-92 diesels cruise at 22–23 knots.

Best Feature: The large cockpit and party-time flybridge — great attributes for entertaining.

Price Spread: $150K to the mid $200s

7. Maxum 4600 SCB Production Years: 1997 –2001

Maxum-4600

At a Glance: Modern styling, an inviting two stateroom interior, and a very competitive price made the Maxum 4600 SCB one of the best motoryacht buys of her day. Maxum engineers packed a lot of value into this boat. The salon is exceptionally inviting with wraparound windows, a long leather sofa, cherry cabinets, and full entertainment center.

A raised dinette is forward to starboard, opposite the home-size galley with overhead glass storage and Corian counters. A lower helm was optional in place of the dinette. Note the tub in the master head. In the cockpit, a center transom door opens to an extended swim platform able to support a PWC.

The 4600 SCB is surprisingly fuel-efficient boat, a feature that stems in part from her relatively light weight. Cummins 370hp diesels cruise at 16–18 knots.

Best Feature: An affordable price — this is what brokers call a lot of boat for the money.

Price Spread:  From about $100K for an older model up to $200K-plus for 2001–02 model.

8. Sea Ray 450 Express Bridge Production Years: 1998 – 2004

Sea-Ray-450-EB

At a Glance:   An innovative yacht when she was introduced in 1998. Not many 45-footers have three staterooms. The aft stateroom — accessed via a private entryway next to the salon door — includes a full-length berth with hanging locker and built-in washer/dryer.

Forward of that, the amidships stateroom features a double berth with partial standing headroom and an opening port. An island queen is in the forward stateroom. Both heads include separate stall showers. Aft of the galley is a breakfast bar with two swing-out stools. Small salon windows limit natural lighting below. Topside, the huge party-time flybridge has seating fore and aft of the center helm console. Note the unique staircase descending from the flybridge to the foredeck.

An extended swim platform was a popular option. Cummins 450hp V-drive diesels cruise at 20–22 knots.

Best Feature: Huge party-time bridge area.

Price Spread:  An early model might be found for $150K. Newer can easily exceed $200K.

9. Carver 440 Aft Cabin Production Years: 1993 – 1999

Carver-440

At a Glance: The largest model in the Carver fleet when she was introduced in 1993. A big 44-footer with an usually spacious salon, two double staterooms, two full heads, and a convertible dinette — sleeping accommodations for as many as eight adults.

The maple wood accents and carpeted salon are showing their age, but large cabin windows make the interior open and airy. Note salon entertainment center. Full-service galley includes double sink, upright refrigerator, washer/dryer, Corian counter and hardwood floor.

The aft deck is large enough for a table and chairs, and the flybridge has dual captain’s chairs with bench seating forward of the helm. Bow pulpit, fiberglass swim platform, and radar arch were standard. Carver sold a lot of these boats and used models are plentiful.

Best Feature: Very spacious layout with room to entertain a small neighborhood.

Price Spread:  From about $100K for an older model up to $200K-plus for 2001–02 model

10. Sea Ray 420 Aft Cabin Production Years: 1996 – 2002

Sea-Ray-420

At a Glance:   Sleek aft cabin cruising yacht incorporated European styling influences in an era when too many American-built motor yachts looked like floating condos. Well-appointed two stateroom galley-down interior sleeps up to eight — includes L-shaped sofa and raised dinette in the salon, walkaround queen berths fore and aft, two full heads, and stand-up utility room under the salon sole.

Full-size galley comes complete with separate Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer, convection oven, and lots of counter and storage space — a big plus. The aft deck is big for a boat this size. Molded steps make boarding from the extended swim platform easy and safe.

Built on a fully cored hull with prop pockets to level the engines. A good performer with 450hp Cummins diesels— cruise in the mid 20s (27–28 knots top.

Best Feature: Utility room with washer/dryer and pantry — a very unique feature in a boat this size

Price Spread:  From the low $100K range for a 1996–97 model up to about $200K for newer.

14 Great Pocket Cruisers in 2023

  • By Victor Tan
  • Updated: July 20, 2023

Pocket cruisers and mini yachts are generally vessels under 50 feet in length overall, and can include express cruiser designs, flybridge yachts as well as either monohull or catamaran hull forms. They are cruising boats easily handled by a small, or even shorthanded, crew. Pocket cruisers generally have wave-taming hull designs and have the ability to take on sporty seas, offer comfortable accommodations belowdecks with one or two staterooms for extended voyages, “homelike amenities,” and the ability to cruise as slowly or as quickly as an owner desires with inboard- and outboard-power options. These pocket-cruising boats have the range for longer voyages , can pull up in skinny water at the sandbar thanks to shallow drafts, and head over the horizon where cruising adventure awaits. Pocket cruisers are true multitasking yachts. When it comes to family and couples cruising, it’s hard to beat a well-built and well-equipped and pocket cruiser.

Best Cruising Boats Under 50-Feet

The following 14 pocket cruisers and mini yachts are all vessels we’ve seen, been aboard, and tested. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Aquila 42: sleek power catamaran ready to entertain

When Android co-founder, Rich Miner, wanted a new family-friendly pocket cruiser , he turned to a custom-penned C.W. Hood design and a Lyman-Morse-built 35-footer, which has a timeless Down East profile matched to seriously modern technology under the hood.

This yacht looks like a traditional, cold-molded Down East dayboat, but actually, it has everything, from Hamilton HJX Series water-jet drives to a planned Sea Machines autonomous command-and-control system . Top speed: 40-plus knots.

Quick Specifications

Galeon yachts 375 gto.

Even the remnants of Hurricane Ian, couldn’t dissuade the Galeon Yacht 375 GTO from its cruising mission. The small yacht’s wave-splitting hull form is paired to torque-filled 600 hp Mercury Verado outboards , giving this fun-in-the-sun boat a 47-knot top hop.

The 375 GTO is a speedster, to be sure, but it’s also so much more. Just about every aspect of the main deck seating is transformable and multifunction, from the aft seating to the alfresco dining abaft the helm, and beyond. It also has a family-size and eminently cruise-worthy belowdecks space for four guests, all while providing a foredeck entertaining lounge too.

The Galeon Yachts 375 GTO ticks all the boxes for an easy-to-handle and sporty cruiser.

Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran

Following the success of its 44-, 54- and 70-foot power catamaran models, Aquila has launched the stable-as-a-table, owner-operator-ready Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran .

The Aquila 42 is the entry point into the builder’s yacht line and is noteworthy for its ability to accommodate anywhere from a two- to four-stateroom layout, depending on the owner’s cruising requirements. There are alfresco spaces to manage the sunset cruise with friends and family, including a foredeck lounge area that can be accessed via centerline steps from the flybridge. The Aquila 42 is available with several Volvo Penta diesel-engine options .

Azimut Verve 42

Want to cruise from Florida to Bimini in about an hour? The Azimut Yachts Verve 42 can do that thanks, in part, to triple 450 hp Mercury Racing outboards and a hull designed to dice-and-slice a seaway. Top hop: 45 knots. The Verve 42 also has style for miles with a fine entry, raked hardtop, and a razorlike sheerline accented by sweeping hull glass from bow to stern. It’s striking.

With accommodation for a family of four, the Verve 42 is also solid under the hull tokeep everyone safe on those passages. The Verve 42’s hull is built of fiberglass and uses vinylester resins for blister protection. The yacht’s deck and hardtop are comprised of carbon fiber for strength without added weight. This all means that the Azimut Verve 42 is built to CE Classification Type A , making it suitable for sea voyages where winds can exceed 45 mph and seas to 13 feet.

Azimut Verve 42

Hinckley Yachts 35

The Hinckley Yachts 35 takes everything that yachtsmen like about this pedigreed-brand’s classic profile and infuses today’s modern outboard power to create 40 knots of sheer fun wrapped in sheer luxury.

This 35-foot Hinckley is built on a Michael-Peters-penned hull form with a fine entry, wider-than-average chines and a moderate deadrise. While the boat is built to sprint when desired, it’s also a relatively economical cruiser. For instance, a comfortable 24-knot cruise the Hinckley Yachts 35 has a 276-nautical-mile range.

It also has a tech-build thanks to vacuum-infused carbon-fiber composites and epoxy resin. An integrated interior structure is infused with the hull adding rigidity. The hull is then post-cured in an 80-foot oven, further strengthening the structure.

Hinckley 35

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

The Beneteau Gran Turismo is the flagship of the builder’s four-model GT series, which also includes 32-, 36- and 41-foot models.

The Gran Turismo 45 ’s cruise-centric layout includes two staterooms and two heads belowdecks, as well as a galley down. There is also a dinette for meals and a settee for rainy-day lounging. Entertaining guests and enjoying the sun is the primary mission of the main deck.

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

Solaris Power 48 Open

The Solaris Power 48 Open was the first powerboat from this longtime builder known for its sailing yachts, ranging from 40 to 110 feet length overall. The Solaris Power 48 Open is notable for its wave-slicing plumb-bow design, high freeboard forward and 32-knot-plus speed. Power is twin 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels.

The high freeboard keeps the deck dry and help creates sizable volume belowdecks with an average 6-foot-6-inch headroom. This enables real estate for either one or two staterooms. With the single-stateroom setup, there is a forepeak master stateroom while an L-shaped settee converts to sleeping accommodations for family or occasional guests. Interior wood options are oak or walnut.

Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS

Outboard-power cruising aficionados will appreciate the triple-engine options for the Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS . The 42 GLS we got aboard had the triple 400 hp Mercury Verados , which produced a top hop of 45 knots, but triple 450 hp Verados are available. Triple 350 hp Mercury Verados are the standard engine option. No matter the power arrangement, this express cruiser can easily be used for wakeboarding and tube towing. The 42 GLS is designed to handle the rough stuff too, with a fine entry and 21-degree transom deadrise.

For cruising enthusiasts, the 42 GLS has a master stateroom with an athwartships and a nearly queen-size berth, and the lower salon’s U-shaped dinette converts to a queen-size berth for the kids.

Back Cove 34O

Combining modern outboard power with classic Downeast styling, the Back Cove 34O touts award-winning standards with cruising in mind. The 34O is equipped with twin 300 hp Yamaha outboards, engines that allow the Newport International Boat Show’s 2018 Best Powerboat Under 35 Feet winner to travel up to 214 nautical miles at 24 knots on a 250-gallon fuel tank.

Belowdecks, the 34O has an island double berth and a split-head arrangement with the toilet to port and a separate shower stall to starboard. On the main deck, a U-shape dinette to port accommodates four or more guests on the Back Cove Yachts vessel. The 34O’s galley is equipped with a Cuisinart microwave, a two-burner Kenyon electric cooktop and a Vitrifrigo fridge and freezer.

Picnic Boat 40

Hinckley Yachts unveiled its first Picnic Boat more than two decades ago. Now, after two previous, sub-40-foot models, the Maine-based boatbuilder has developed its largest and most advanced model to date: the Picnic Boat 40.

Twin 480 hp Cummins diesel engines paired to twin Hamilton 322 jet drives propel the yacht to a 30-knot cruising speed and 34 knots on the pins. With optional twin 550 hp Cummins diesels, cruise and top-end speeds jump to 35 and 38 knots, respectively.

There is an L-shaped settee with a table and a wet bar on the main deck to port. The helm station is forward and to starboard with a benchseat for two. There is also a companion seat across from the helm. Belowdecks, there is 6-foot-2-inch headroom, and the dinette table drops to form a California-king berth for overnights and weekending.

hinckley picnic boat 40

Aquila Power Catamarans started its line with 44- and 48-footers, and now the builder’s Aquila 36 takes the line into the midsize market.

The 36 features a single, main-living area from bow to stern, helped in part by the vessel’s 14-foot, 7-inch beam. The boat can comfortably seat up to 20 guests for fun on the salt. Several Mercury Verado engine options are available for the Aquila 36, including twin 250-, 300- and 350-hp four-strokes. With the 350s, the Aquila has a top-end speed of 37 knots.

Other notable features include a fiberglass hardtop, a dinette, a cooktop, a fridge, a sink and a smokeless grill. Belowdecks, there are two staterooms with nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads and 6-foot-6-inch headroom in each.

Boston Whaler 350 Realm

From fishing and entertaining guests to diving and overnight cruising, Boston Whaler ‘s 350 Realm is a multitasker. And it’s fast, too. It’s powered with either triple 300 hp or triple 350 hp Mercury Verados. The 350 Realm can reach a top speed of 46 knots.

At the helm, two Raymarine displays provide vital navigation data. The captain can take in the displays’ view from a doublewide helm seat. There’s a flip-down platform for standing when needed and a footrest when desired.

There is a V-shaped berth that converts into a double berth with a filler cushion. The separated head has a VacuFlush MSD and a hot-and-cold shower. Owners also have the option to add a microwave and a flat-screen TV.

Boston Whaler 350 Realm

The MJM 35z can reach a top speed of 44 knots and a cruising speed of 33 knots on its optional 350 hp Mercury Verado outboards; twin 300 hp outboards are standard on this MJM Yachts vessel. Additionally, the 35z can travel up to 304 nautical miles on its 250-gallon fuel tank.

The 35z has a flush-deck layout and to port is space for an electric grill, a baitwell, a sink, an ice maker and a fridge. There are two Stidd helm seats—one for the helmsman and the other for a copilot—that rotate to face the rest of the seating aft. In the cabin is V-shaped seating forward that can be converted to a berth.

Owners also have the option of adding a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer and a full-length Bimini top to shade the cockpit.

MJM 35z

Greenline 39

Greenline Yachts ‘ vessels are aptly named for their environmentally friendly means of moving about; the Greenline 39 is no different. The Slovenian yacht manufacturer produces two types of this model: hybrid and solar.

If owners opt for the latter, the 39’s four solar panels atop the salon power all of the vessel’s systems for three hours. With the power of the sun, the 39 can achieve a max speed of 6.5 knots and a cruising speed of 4 knots. The hybrid type uses those same panels to help power a 220 hp Volvo Penta D3 with a Mahle electric-drive system. Owners have the option of replacing the standard engine with a 370 hp Yanmar 8LV diesel.

Belowdecks, scissor berths provide accommodations for long weekends.

Affordable New Boats

Ninety-five percent of the 12 million U.S.-registered boats are less than 26 feet, and most cost less than $50k. With plenty of great options, there's a boat out there for everyone.

Bayliner Element M17 Deck Boat beached

Ask any average American boater why they think more than 1 million preowned (formerly known as "used") boats were bought in 2020, versus about 320,000 brand new boats. You'll likely hear the same answer: "New boats are expensive." We can all agree that's a relative term depending on one's disposable income. And that one person's stinkpot may be another's yacht. It's all a matter of perspective.

"You do see a lot of ‘big' boats at the shows, and they certainly have the ‘wow' factor, but nearly 80% of our boats cost less than $50,000, so we have a huge portion of our portfolio aimed squarely at middle-income consumers," says Lee Gordon, president of communications for Brunswick Corp., the largest boatbuilder in America encompassing 17 brands including Bayliner, Boston Whaler, and Sea Ray. "Most of the boats on my lake are $50K and below, for sure."

We know from speaking with industry insiders that plenty of new boats are paid in full upfront — sometimes with cash! — but most of us are looking at what type of monthly payments we can fit into our household budget. And while a new boat might cost more up front, the benefits include a guaranteed warranty and a local dealer connection.

Did You Know: The boatbuilding industry is over the moon about selling more than 300,000 new boats annually. First-time boat buyers accounted for 34% of new boat sales in 2020.

While you may be perfectly happy with your boat, you'll inevitably come across a potential newbie wanting to pick your boat-savvy brain. Or your grown kid is contemplating making the jump. Or you're both looking to downsize. One of the great joys of small boating is found in their simplicity — there's less stuff on board to break, fewer systems to maintain, and those inevitable surprise repair bills don't hurt nearly as much.

Despite their size, small boats usually mean big fun, and the water under your hull, regardless of size, is exactly the same out there. Here we've collected some of the best-bang-for-the-buck new boats we've come across, a diverse fleet designed for varied passions on the water.

Bayliner Element M17 Deck Boat

Bayliner Element M17 Deck Boat running

Engine: 60-hp Mercury FourStroke EFI Outboard | Fuel capacity: 18 gal. | Dry weight: 1,984 lbs. (with standard engine); 2,457 lbs. (with trailer) | Persons: (capacity) 7 (1,000 lbs.) | LOA: 17' | Beam: 8'6"

Bayliner Element M17 Deck Boat cockpit seating

The Element is compact fun with versatile seating and comfortable swim platform seating.

There are lots of Bayliners on the water because the iconic brand remains focused on affordable entry-level boats. When the Element was introduced back in 2013 to attract nonboaters, it was a hit because it came out of the box with engine and trailer (with swing tongue) for about half the average cost of a new car. The simple helm layout is designed to not overwhelm the senses — just a few gauges and toggle switches that deliver what you need for safe navigation. The proprietary M-Hull foundation offers better stability and predictable turning, making the M17 easy to drive. At 20-feet, 1-inch long, and standing 6 feet, 8 inches on the trailer, the M17 tucks away in most garages. There are optional packages for watersports, fishing, and additional comfort, but a portable toilet is not included. Price starts at $21,830. Bayliner.com

The Vista 20 LR features four wraparound lounges and a seating area that converts into a bar area to entertain. Twin pedestal-mount captain's chairs, carpeting, retractable aluminum boarding ladder, and a bimini top come standard. Options include a Jensen Bluetooth stereo, docking lights, mood lighting, extreme tilt steering, and a full complement of gauges. Comes with a Lifetime Plus six-year limited warranty on hull and superstructure and six years on all components, carpet, upholstery, and electronics. Notable options: Humminbird Helix 5 GPS and Humminbird Piranhamax Sonar Unit, trailer. Price starts at $31,007. Sunchaserboats.com

Parker Boats set up shop in 1960s coastal North Carolina, so its modified-V hulls are built to slice through surf and head out for offshore fishing. Parkers are known for their dry ride. The 2200 is a fish-first boat (with leaning post, rod holders, self-bailing cockpit, and 60 gallons of insulated storage), but with some added comforts for family dayboating (bow seating, portable toilet, and swim platforms with mounted boarding ladder). Hydraulic steering, trim tabs, a Yamaha Digital Gauge package, under-gunwale LED lights, and stainless steel pop-up cleats are standard. It's built for all levels of anglers with multiple livewells, a built-in cooler, and lockable rod storage. Two added fold-up jump seats on the rear platform allow owners to quickly adjust for daycruising. The extra seating can be folded out of the way for more access to the newly extended platform (by 6 inches), allowing anglers more space to cast off the rear deck. For skiers, an optional ski pylon can be attached to the built-in base and conveniently stored in the starboard side storage when not in use. The base also doubles as a pedestal seat base for the comfort of your favorite fishing partner. Options include one of eight Mercury outboards, ranging from about $10,000 to $15,000. The 2000 ES is a low-maintenance family dayboat that can be parked on a trailer in the garage (6'5" height on trailer). A multi-position Social Seat, oversized bow seating, sunpad, Fusion Marine sound system with six cockpit speakers, ample storage and cooler space, and low-to-the-water swim platform set the scene for socializing on the water. This is boating stripped to the essentials — a stainless-steel steering wheel, cushioned leaning post with a cooler underneath, livewell, rod holders, and a new 90-hp outboard on back. Stingray's Z-Plane hull design, adopted from offshore racing boats, reduces drag and increases performance, making for a soft ride. Every bit of surface area is used on this boat: Under each casting deck, fore and aft, is padded seating, a livewell, or storage. The Mighty G is the latest from Godfrey Marine and, at less than 16 feet, is compact and highly maneuverable. Available in either cruising or fishing configurations, standard features include a Clarion sound system, bench-style seating, steel telescoping EZ Climb ladder, and a fishing station with rod holders and tackle storage (standard on the Fish model; an option on the Cruise model, which comes with a ski pylon). Next-Level 'Affordable'

As we said upfront, "affordable" means something different to everyone. Depending on one's life situation, here are a few notable boats on the upper end of our affordability scale.

Pursuit DC 246

Pursuit DC 246 running

Engine: Yamaha Digital F300 V6 Offshore with Integrated Digital Electric Steering (DES) and Helm Master EX Digital Electronic Control (DEC) | Fuel capacity: 118 gal. | Dry weight: 6,138 lbs. | Freshwater: 18 gal. | LOA: 25'8" | Beam: 8'6"

Pursuit DC 246 seating

The Pursuit DC 246 has the comforts and amenities for a long summer day on the water.

For anglers, center-consoles rule. But the dual-console design can handle nastier conditions due to a semi-enclosed helm station offering better weather protection. This new generation of dual-consoles replaces a cuddy cabin with open-bow seating, making for another family-friendly fishboat. Rod holders and foldaway transom seating make room for two anglers in the cockpit with a 31-gallon transom fish box. Engine: Mercury 300 Verado; or MerCruiser 6.2L MPI ECT Bravo Three with DTS (300 hp 224 kW) | Fuel capacity: 75 gal. | Dry weight: 5,564 lbs. | Capacity: 3,200 lbs. | LOA: 28’7” (OB); 25’5” (sterndrive) | Beam: 8’6”

Sea Ray SLX 260 Outboard transom storage

The SLX 260 features luxuries like underwater lighting, automotive style dash, and ample transom storage for water toys.

The SLX 260 is another 26-foot bowrider, but it's a Sea Ray, which means a well-appointed boat with eye-catching design aesthetics. Also available with sterndrive propulsion, the SLX 260 is luxury dayboating, and the new look of the Sea Ray line going forward. Customer feedback played a key role in designing the layout, which translates to comforts including include L-shaped bench cockpit seating, lounge-style bow seating with foldable armrests, and a teak table that converts the bow into a large sunpad with filler cushions. Storage is 24 cubic feet more than previous models, including an integrated cooler under the transom sunpad and a transom locker for stowing gear and flotation toys. Standard features are a cut above, with twin 9-inch Simrad touchscreen displays, Mercury Marine's VesselView engine performance monitor, Active Trim automatic engine trim system, and CZone digital switching. Price starts at $169,900. SeaRay.com

Cutwater C-288 Coupe

Cutwater C-288 Coupe running

Engine: Twin counter-rotating Yamaha F250 outboards | Fuel capacity: 200 gal. | Dry weight: 10,000 lbs. | LOA: 33'7" (motors down) | Beam: 10'

Cutwater C-288 Coupe galley

The Cutwater C-288 Coupe packs in a full galley and creative space solutions like this foldaway transom bench.

This fast, fuel-efficient cruiser is also suitable for fishing, entertaining, and watersports — and has a similar cost to some vacation cottages. Cutwaters are known for smart layouts that maximize storage and accommodations, and the boats come packed with standard features: two climate-controlled (AC and heat) cabins, one with en suite head and shower; a full galley; Fusion stereo; and LCD-TV. The helm comes wired with chartplotter, autopilot, sonar, xHD radar, a DSC-capable VHF radio, color engine displays, and twin-lever electronic throttle controls. A standard bow thruster with wireless remote makes docking easy, safe, and calm for boaters of all experience levels. A patent-pending transom seat can face forward, aft, or be completely folded away for fishing. Another clever feature called a "clear path" swim platform conceals all engine hoses and controls. This leaves more usable space for sitting with the transom seat opened aft, fishing (there are rod holders and a livewell), grilling (electric BBQ), or when boarding. A 10-foot beam adds stability and volume, but the boat is still trailerable. Price starts at $314,937. CutwaterBoats.com

The Bottom Line On Pricing

In preparing this article, we've noticed a pricing trend from some manufacturers. What was once considered standard equipment in the base list price is no longer included — and this can include the engine!

Options have always been the slippery slope with any new vessel purchase. But there are options you'd like (bimini top) and options you need (anchor). Some boats no longer come with a VHF radio or navigation electronics, even though you'll need them out there. Don't forget to add these "extras" into your budget, including installation costs.

We recently heard from a boater who knew ahead of time that his new ski boat didn't come with an anchor or VHF. He was left trying to "figure out" how to install those himself before he could use the boat. If you're not confident in your DIY abilities, get the dealer to install these kinds of necessities.

What items should be on board? See " Basic Boat Equipment " to find out exactly what should be on your new (or new-to-you) boat before safely leaving the dock.

Best Yacht Brands: Discovering the Top Choices Today

3rd mar 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

Yachting is big business, and reports state that in the United States alone the recreational boating industry is worth approximately $170 billion. With boating on the rise all across the world, we take a look at the best boat brands of 2023 in several different categories.

What are the Top 10 Yacht Brands in the United States?

The boating world spans one of the greatest ranges of any industry, with everything from the tiniest of skiffs up to the largest of luxury superyachts in its repertoire. Yet terminology and classification is often a gray area, with lots of overlap. A yacht could be a sailing yacht or a motor yacht, and from there further sub-categorized into superyachts, trawler yachts, sport fishing yachts, and so many more. When we look at the top 10 best yacht brands on the market, it’s easy to end up comparing apples and oranges. The best in one category might not make it onto the best in another, purely because of the style of yachts they produce. So here we have listed – in no particular order - the Top 10 best yacht brands in the United States by their popularity and quantities of yachts sold. More information:  An Overview of the Many Types of Yachts

1. Boston Whaler : There isn’t a marina in the US that doesn’t have a Boston Whaler in it, such is the huge popularity of this American born manufacturer. With a big inventory of fishing and cruising yachts, and an impressive safety record, Boston Whaler’s are in high demand both new and used.

2. Grady-White : Established in 1959 in the US, Grady-White are pioneers in the sportfishing and walkaround yacht category, specializing in dual and center console saltwater fishing boats. Renowned for being reliable, safe, elegant and offering high performance, they provide long-term value in both the new and used markets.

3. Sea Ray Boats : Sea Ray have been building some of the best sport cruiser yachts in the US since their founding in 1959. Today they remain one of the most popular, with a strong focus on customer service and satisfaction, as well as attention to detail.

4. Regal Boats : Orlando-based Regal Boats have been manufacturing high quality sport cruiser yachts, bowriders, watersports boats and express cruisers since 1969, and in 1995 launched their revolutionary FasTrac hull which set industry standards and won many awards. Today it continues to form the backbone of their designs.

5. Carver Yachts : Another all-American company with roots in the 1950s, Carver Yachts specialized in spacious, highly functional, and dependable world-class cruising yachts which stand the tests of time. While they closed their doors in 2021, their yachts, which range from 34 to 50 feet, are highly sought after on the used market.

6. Bayliner : The super popular Bayliner brand produces some of the smallest boats on this list with their range of luxurious deck, fishing and center console models, but with state of the art engineering and elegant profiles, they are always sought after whether new or used.

7. Viking Yachts : Based in New Jersey, USA, Viking are a legendary American yacht brand best known for their sportfishing yachts and motor boats in the 37-92 ft. range. For over six decades they have made a name for themselves as world leaders in luxurious, high performance cruising yachts.

8. Chris-Craft Boats : Chris-Craft is an American cultural icon with nearly 150 years of heritage in creating recreational boats. Today they continue their legacy with their ranges of day boats, overnight cruisers and center consoles which offer timeless elegance and impeccable craftsmanship.

9. Westport Yachts : The largest yacht builder in North America, Westport have been leading the industry since 1964. They specialize in the production of large motor yachts, and were pioneers in the use of composite material in boats.

10. Ocean Alexander : Originally based in Taiwan, Ocean Alexander operates out of its home base in Merritt Island, Florida and has been one of the world’s best loved yacht brands since 1977. Their inventory ranges from the 45 foot Divergence Coupe, a yacht crossed with a sport boat, all the way up to some of the most acclaimed superyachts ever built.

What are the Best Luxury Yacht Brands in the World?

The superyacht industry is one of the fastest growing sectors of the boating world, and the number of superyachts gracing our oceans has more than doubled in the last 10 years. Categorized as yachts (both motor and sail) over 78 feet, they are the largest and most luxurious vessels in the world costing millions of dollars. The heart of the superyacht manufacturing industry is in Europe, with many of the world’s top superyacht brands based in Italy, France, the Netherlands and Germany, but with builders in the United States, United Kingdom and Asia also making big waves. Superyachts set the bar for the entire boating industry, constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation and engineering. Here we list (in no particular order) some of the top superyacht manufacturers in the world.

What are the Best Trawler Yacht Brands?

The slow, sturdy trawler has had one of the most impressive make overs of any vessel. Once considered a workhorse of a fishing boat, today they are one of the most sought-after long-distance cruising yachts on the market. These impressive ocean-going yachts offer luxury, comfort, space, speed and fuel-efficiency in one highly capable and attractive package. Where they once would have been left in the wake of sportfishers or motoryachts, today’s trawler yachts are differentiated only by their iconic silhouette resembling a mini superyacht.

Nordic Tugs

1. Nordic Tugs : These American-built trawler yachts are the epitome of what today’s trawlers can be: luxurious, long-range and jaw-droppingly spacious. They are anything but a tug boat, and built with meticulous attention to detail creating reliable, adventure-bound cruisers that offer a real home on the water.

2. Grand Banks : One of the pioneers of the cruising trawler, Grand Banks have brought these hugely popular yachts to superyacht levels in a compact package. They have six decades of boat building under their belt, offering reliability, customer service and forward-thinking ideas.

3. Beneteau : Beneteau’s Swift series saw the slow trawler turn into a mini superyacht, and with over 1,300 sales to date, it is one of the most popular brands on the market. Beneteau are world leaders in creating large superyachts, and they have put all of that expertise into this smaller range which culminates in the Grand Trawler 62.

4. Ranger Tugs : American-born Ranger Tugs brought their expertise of building small cruisers and designed a series of trawlers. And forget pocket yachts, these are full-scale trawlers which promise adventure and long-range exploration. With their CB range, they created a unique flybridge which is home to an upper helm, galley and dinette and pushes conventional trawler design.

5. Nordhavn : Nordhavn produces well-engineered, high performance trawler yachts ranging from 41 foot pocket cruisers to 120 foot superyachts. Yet each one always retains its trawler image, Nordhavn’s signature look for several decades.

What are the Best Affordable Yacht Brands?

Yachts are a luxury asset, and where we talk about affordability it ultimately comes down to a buyer’s personal budget. Of course, buying a used boat is always going to be more cost effective than a brand new one, but there are yacht brands which focus on offering quality, affordable yachts including:

Chris-Craft

1. Carver : Carver Yachts have long been known for their affordability, and even though the company closed in 2021 their used yachts make boating accessible to a wide range of American families. They offer spacious, highly functional, and dependable world-class cruising yachts which stand the tests of time.

2. SeaRay Boats : Sea Ray have been building some of the best sport cruiser yachts in the US since their founding in 1959. Today they remain one of the most popular, with a strong focus on customer service and satisfaction, as well as attention to detail. While new SeaRays don’t come cheap, their popularity means there are plenty on the used market which can be bought very affordably.

3. Chris-Craft : Chris-Craft’s center console yachts offer excellent value for money, as well as high performance and plenty of extras. In fact, since the beginning of the 1900’s, Chris-Craft have dedicated themselves to offering boats for the everyday family, whether it was a small skiff or something more luxurious.

4. Cutwater Boats : Functional, reliable, fun and affordable, Cutwater Boats offer an impressive range of trawler-style cruising boats which do it all, whether that’s cruising off-grid, fishing with friends or spending a day on the water with family.

5. Ranger Tugs : Ranger Tugs are one of the most affordable yacht brands of 2023, with a great choice of family-friendly pocket yachts and long distance cruisers and trawlers. The R-23 in particular has been built with price at the forefront and allows buyers to purchase an excellent trawler boat at well under the price of most competitors.

What are the Best Sport Fishing Yacht Brands?

The United States leads the way when it comes to sportfishing yachts , and their popularity is only gaining. Whether you’re looking to buy used or new, there are some top brands out there producing boats designed for serious fishing pros. Sportfishing yachts need to be fast and reliable, offer plenty of fishing amenities and extras, offer comfort and a great driving experience, and look downright cool in the process. There are many brands out there to choose from, with major players including Grady-White, Boston Whaler and Viking, but here are some of the other top contenders:

Hatteras Yachts

1. Huckins Yachts : Huckins pride themselves on creating some serious mean machines, and they were one of the first manufacturers to use fiberglass composites for their hulls. Today they produce a unique range of sportfishing boats that are ultra-sleek and ultra-fast.

2. Hatteras Yachts : Hatteras Yachts focus on what they do extremely well, and that is making some of the best sportfishing convertible boats in the world. With just four models in their current range (but others on the used market) they have fine-tuned every aspect of their boats to suit the serious angler.

3. Tiara Yachts : Another major player in the sportfishing yacht sector are Tiara Yachts, who manage to combine a serious fishing vessel with a luxury yacht. The results are a range of mid-sized motor yachts which are modern, beautiful and at the forefront of engineering.

4. Luhrs Boats : While no longer in production, no sportfishing yacht list would be complete without Luhrs Boats on it. With plenty of models to be found on the used market they offer an affordable and reliable vessel with all the fishing bells and whistles you could need.

5. Bertram Yachts : If you’re looking for a versatile, reliable and powerful sportfishing yacht then look no further than Bertram Yachts. While they take inspiration from traditional fishing boats, they offer a range of rugged sportfishing and flybridge yachts which can tackle any conditions.

10 Cheap, Affordable Boats for 2022

most affordable yacht brands

Table of Contents

Last Updated on November 3, 2023 by Boatsetter Team

Say ‘cheap boats’ and many people get the wrong impression, because they often think that ‘cheap’ equates to poor quality. That’s too bad because in reality, the most affordable boats on the water today are usually quite well built.

Modern standards are high and although these boats may be very simple and utilitarian, their owners tend to love them. Plus, simple, inexpensive boats are easy to maintain, easy to operate, and have very low operational expenses . On top of all that you can defray what expenses there are—and potentially even make a profit—by allowing other people to rent your boat . But, what constitutes a cheap boat in the first place?

While $10,000 isn’t exactly chump change it’s a tiny sum in the world of boat-buying. So for the purposes of this post, we’ll use that as our price ceiling and stick with looking at boats under 10K ( listed alphabetically from A to Z ).

1. Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8

Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8

With a list cost of $619.99 this is just about the cheapest boat you’re likely to run across. True, you’ll want to spend $300 or so to get an electric trolling motor and a battery, but for anglers who fish alone on small bodies of water the Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8 will get the job done.

It has a swivel seat, recessed beverage and tackle holders, bow and stern motor mounts, and is pre-wired for electric motors. The polyethylene hull and deck material is virtually indestructible, and with a footprint just eight feet long and four feet wide, you can slide this 100-pound fishing machine right into the back of a pickup truck.

  • MSRP: $619.99

Visit Bass Pro Shops to learn more.

2. Gheenoe 16 Super

Gheenoe 16 Super

The Gheenoe 16 Super is sort of like a boat crossed with a canoe, with a canoe-like entry that widens aft to a 4’7” beam . That gives it plenty of room for a pair of people, and since these boats are most commonly used for fishing, the 16 Super comes with swiveling pedestal seats, rod holders, and an aerated livewell.

MSRP is $5,400 and a trailer adds another $1,300, so there’s plenty of cash left in the budget for an outboard up to 20 horsepower. Note that this is also one of the few boats in this roundup which can also be rigged with a console (an additional $480) and can be steered with a wheel as opposed to a tiller arm.

  • MSRP:  $5,400 (without a trailer)

Visit Gheenoe Boats to learn more.

3. Hobie Mirage Compass Duo

Hobie Mirage Compass Duo

The Hobie Mirage Compass Duo may be svelte with a beam of just under three feet, but its 13’6” length is capable of handling bigger waters than one might imagine. It’s propelled by human power via Hobie’s Mirage Drive pedal-and-fins system and with two people pedaling, can move along at jogging speeds. Plus, since you don’t need to buy a motor this tandem kayak’s list cost of $3,849 is all you’ll need to spend.

The Mirage Compass Duo also comes with four tracks installed so you can add items like fishing rod holders or cupholders to customize the boat as you please.

  • MSRP: $3,849

Visit Hobie to learn more.

4. Lowe 1032 Jon

Lowe 1032 Jon

The Lowe 1032 Jon is one of the most affordable boats you’ll ever find, period. True, it’s very small with a length of just 10’3” and a beam of four feet. Capacity is limited to 180 pounds, and maximum power is a mere 3.5 horsepower. But price is off-the-charts affordable with an MSRP of $1,016.

Spend a few hundred dollars for an electric motor or closer to $1,000 for a miniature gas motor, and you can afford to buy an entire fleet without breaking our price ceiling. Wait a sec—what about a trailer? Why bother with one? At 80 pounds it’s easy enough to shove the 1032 into the back of a pick-up, or even on top of a roof rack.

  • MSRP: $1,016

Visit Lowe Boats to learn more.

5. Lund 1648 Jon Boat

Lund 1648 Jon Boat

Boatbuilder Lund is known for making aluminum boats of all shapes and sizes, and while they have smaller, even more affordable boats, their 1648 Jon goes for a hair over $3,600 and has a lot of capabilities for the price. Add in a trailer and a 20 horse outboard, and you’ll still be well under the 10K mark while enjoying a roomy 15’9” Jon boat with two bench seats and enough power to cruise at over 20 MPH even with a couple of people aboard.

This boat has a flat bottom design so it’s stable (though it could be a bit bumpy in open waters when the waves kick up), and its light 275-pound weight means that you could also power it with an electric motor for use on small bodies of water.

  • MSRP: $3,611

Visit Lund Boats to learn more.

6. Old Modern Handicrafts Clinker Whitehall Rowboat

Old Modern Handicrafts Clinker Whitehall Rowboat

If a hand-built wooden rowboat appeals to you, the Old Modern Handicrafts Clinker Whitehall Rowboat will be of interest. It shows a $11,810 MSRP on the website, but it’s listed on Amazon for significantly less at $7,703 (or 18 monthly payments of $427.96).

This classic rowboat is built of white pine, red cedar, and plywood, with beech gunwales, and comes with four wood oars plus oarlocks. It has a four-person capacity and is 12’ long by 3’5” wide.

  • MSRP: $11,810

Visit Old Modern Handicrafts to learn more.

7. Sea-Doo Spark

Sea-Doo Spark

Personal watercrafts count as boats, too, and the Sea-Doo Spark is an eminently affordable PWC . Starting at a $5,699 MSRP the base version blasts across the water’s surface with up to two people aboard. Power comes courtesy of a 60 HP Rotax 900 ACE engine, and the Spark’s Polytec hull is rugged and light.

Pony up another $1,300 and you can get the “3 Up” version, which has seating for three people and boasts an additional 30 horsepower. Both models also have a tow hook so you can pull the kids around the lake on tow-toys.

  • MSRP: $5,699

Visit Sea-Doo to learn more.

8. Starcraft SF 14 DLX

Starcraft SF 14 DLX

Though its small and inexpensive, the Starcraft 14 SF DLX has quite a lot going for it. It’s V-hull can handle a chop much better than some flat bottom boats, and it comes with lockable stowage compartments, two bench seats, an aerated livewell, and rugged vinyl flooring. It also has more capacity than many of the boats in this roundup, with the ability to haul a crew of four.

Pricing starts at around $5,000 so when you add a trailer and an outboard you’ll come close to the 10K mark, but there should still be enough play in the budget to cover life jackets and some new fishing rods.

  • MSRP: est. $5,000

Visit Starcraft Marine to learn more.

9. Sun Dolphin Pro 120

Sun Dolphin Pro 120

The Sun Dolphin Pro 120 is an 11’3” two-person rotomolded polyethylene fishing boat which costs slightly less than $2,000 for the boat alone, and with a trailer and a 10-horsepower outboard, can commonly be had for around $5,400 to $6,000. For a cheap boat it’s amazingly well equipped, with two swivel seats, fore and aft decks with integrated stowage compartments and hatches, an aerated livewell, built-in rodholders, a fused control panel, navigation lights, and pre-wiring for an electric trolling motor.

The Pro 120 has a tri-hull design which is extremely stable for its size, and will prove perfect for an angling couple headed to the lake. Added bonus: the polyethylene hull material is virtually indestructible, and will bounce right off of hard objects like rocks and pilings.

  • MSRP: est. $2,000

Visit Sun Dolphin to learn more.

10. Tracker Grizzly 1754 Jon

Tracker Grizzly 1754 Jon

One of the biggest boats you can buy that still qualifies as cheap is the 17’1” long, 6’6” wide Tracker Grizzly 1754 Jon , which costs just a hair over $7,000 with a trailer. You can complete the package by adding a 15-hp outboard (which generally costs a little less than $3,000) and while the boat won’t exactly be a speed demon, you’ll be able to get on plane with a couple of people aboard.

This model has a lockable bowdeck compartment, 0.10” thick aluminum plating in the hull and a 0.190” thick aluminum deck, a seven-degree modified-V hull, and the interior is coated in textured Sure Tread. Thanks to its relatively large size, this boat also offers among the largest capacities in this roundup with the ability to haul up to six people.

  • MSRP: $5,395

Visit Tracker Boats to learn more.

No matter what your financial status may be, there’s a very good chance that you’ll find one or more of these cheap boats affordable. And don’t forget, if the finances are tight or you just feel like making an extra buck or two you can always rent your boat to help cover the cost of buying it.

10 Most Affordable Deck Boats

cheap deck boats

Deck boats are known for maximizing available interior space, but what many people may not think about is that they also maximize your boating bang-for-the-buck. They usually have more seating and stowage capacity than other types of boats of the same size, they can adapt to just about any boating activity ranging from watersports to fishing, and they’re every bit as easy to run and maintain as an average bowrider or center console .

Plus, there are lots of deck boats to choose from—lots and lots. We’d encourage any boater to take their time and research as many models as possible before making any decisions, but checking out these 10 most affordable deck boats is great place to start.

bayliner element m15

1. Bayliner Element M15

We previously called out the Bayliner M15 as one of the Top 12 New Boats Under $21K for 2021 , but even so, we can’t talk about affordable deck boats without starting here. A list price of just $13,999 for a boat-motor-trailer package (with a 40 HP Mercury FourStroke) makes this one of the most affordable new boats of any type, and its deck boat design means that even at just 15’2” long and 6’7” wide it still has comfortable seating for five.

Plus, the M15 is built on Bayliner’s M-hull design. That maximizes stability, a critical factor when it comes to the comfort and security of you, your family, and your guests. On top of that, the package length is 17’5” so the M15 will fit in virtually any garage in America.

Visit Bayliner to learn more.

Chaparral 230 Suncoast

2. Chaparral 230 Suncoast

With a sticker price of $57,595 (which includes a trailer and a Yamaha F200 four-stroke outboard), the Chaparral 230 Suncoast delivers everything you could hope for from not only a deck boat, but also a watersports boat , a day cruiser , and a bowrider. That makes it like three boats in one, so for around $20K per boat, what’s not to like?

Plus, this is about as competent a deck boat as you’re likely to find, with almost 23 feet of LOA and the ability to take a dozen people aboard. Sports features include in-deck ski/wakeboard stowage and an optional arch with an elevated tow bit; cruising complements range from an enclosed head to built-in and carry-on coolers; and bowrider-like perks incorporate forward seating with integrated cupholders and stereo speakers, a folding center windshield, and a bow-mounted telescopic boarding ladder for easy visits to the beach.

With a starting price of $36,951 the Four Winns HD1 is more affordable than many outboard-powered options but this boat comes with a standard MerCruiser 4.5L 200 HP stern drive under the hood. That brings with it advantages like a huge aft sunpad, and a full-beam swim platform that no deck boat with an outboard can match.

Yet this rig still provides as much seating and interior room as any of this size, has plenty of watersports get-up-and-go with that potent powerplant, and is still easy to trailer (and comes with a custom-matched single-axel trailer with brakes).

Glastron GTD 180

4. Glastron GTD 180

If what you’re after is maximum seating and elbow room for the LOA, you’ll find that the Glastron GTD 180 has a unique appeal. Rather than utilizing the common split windshield layout, this boat has a single console to starboard. Seating runs along the transom, the goes forward and up the port side uninterrupted until reaching the bow. And there’s even more seating up there, wrapping around in front of the helm station.

In fact, there’s more than enough seating for the entire crew even with the boat’s maximum capacity of 10 aboard. Yet pricing for the GTD 180 is eminently reasonable, starting at $28,506 with the standard Mercury 90 HP FourStroke and a single-axel trailer with submersible LED lights and a swing-away tongue.

Hurricane Center Console 21 OB

5. Hurricane Center Console 21 OB

Hurricane is known for building multiple model lines of deck boats, but the Center Console 21 OB stands out as one of the few deck boats on the water that’s designed for serious anglers. With a 115-horsepower outboard on the transom you can get it for less than $50K, or up the ante to just over $50K and get a 150 HP powerplant. Either way this boat will likely cost less than the tow vehicle that pulls it to the boat ramp.

And once you get there, you’ll enjoy some serious angling action thanks to the center console design’s 360-degree fishability. Other fishy perks include twin (30- and 12-gallon) livewells, an aft deck with seating that converts into an elevated casting platform, gunwale and under-gunwale rodholders, and fishboxes in the deck.

NauticStar 193SC

6. NauticStar 193SC

In many cases you may have to sacrifice some performance to attain affordability, but that is most certainly not the case with the NauticStar 193SC . Its $42,907 MSRP includes a 115 HP powerplant that takes this boat up over the 40 MPH mark at top-end, and provides a cruise of around 30 MPH.

Also unusual for deck boats in this size range, the 193SC has a mini-galley with a freshwater sink and stowage, to go along with the onboard 25-quart cooler. The boat can be semi-customized for the way you want to use it, too, with options for a livewell for anglers, a ski pylon and transom shower for watersports fans, and a table or bow filler for folks who just plan to kick back and relax.

PlayCraft FX4 Fishdeck 20

7. PlayCraft FX4 Fishdeck 20

A unique offering among the deck boat crowd is the PlayCraft FX4 Fishdeck 20 , which has the hull of a fiberglass deck boat but a topsides very much like a pontoon boat . The aluminum fence with baked-enamel painted panels, rotomolded furniture bases, and woven vinyl flooring might even make you think there are pontoons under this hull—right up until you hit the throttle.

Then, you’ll discover the solid, seaworthy feel of the fiberglass monohull underfoot. And while PlayCraft doesn’t publish MSRP numbers, if you look at advertised listings for this model you’ll see plenty on offer that cost less than most new cars.

Starcraft SVX 191 OB

8. Starcraft SVX 191 OB

You can park a new Starcraft SVX 191 OB with a Mercury 115 HP FourStroke on the transom in your garage for $36,819—which means your eminently affordable monthly boat payment will most likely be well below the payment you make on your boring land vehicle.

Beyond affordability, what we really like about this model is that it enjoys a wide-open floorplan with seating ringing the interior, and stowage area is molded into the port side, providing backrests that effectively turn the seats on either side into loungers. We also love that Starcraft puts EVA Soft Touch matts on both bow and stern swim platforms.

Stingray 172SC Deck Boat

9. Stingray 172SC Deck Boat

Starting at an MSRP of just $24,345 with a Suzuki DF70 four-stroke outboard, the Stingray 172SC Deck Boat is one of the most affordable boats in the mix. But don’t let the small price tag nor the boat’s relatively small size fool you into thinking it isn’t well-equipped.

The base model includes Stingray’s Convenience Package (with a 25-quart removable cooler, an Italian steering wheel, a tinted windscreen, and a Fusion RA-55 stereo system), vinyl seat cushions with Nano-Block stain resistance, dual USB ports, a 12-V outlet, backlighted helm instruments, and a telescopic ladder on the swim platform.

Tahoe 1950

10. Tahoe 1950

Here’s what we love about the Tahoe 1950 , other than its $37,090 “No Haggle No Hassle” national price tag: it’s not just a deck boat, it’s a complete deck boat package. Hitch up the trailer, fill up the fuel tank so you can feed the Mercury 115 HP outboard its oats, and hit the lake. The boat’s standard items list includes multi-tasking accessories ranging from livewells for fishing to tow pylons for watersports, and you don’t have to pay extra for many of the upgrades other manufacturer charge extra for.

The hardware is all stainless-steel for saltwater use, the stock outboard is a Pro XS Command Thrust model, and while Tahoe could certainly get away with including a single-axel trailer they instead package this deal with tandem axel trailer with Galvashield corrosion protection, a spare tire, a fold-away tongue, submersible LED lights, safety cables, and brakes on both axels.

You say you don’t need a trailer? Fine, that brings the No Haggle No Hassle deal down to $33,695. But if you ask us, the ability to explore unrestricted horizons on a complete and affordable package like this is just too good to resist.

Sea Ray SDX 290

Bonus Boat: Sea Ray SDX 290

We’re not about to argue that a $157,138 MSRP would be considered “most affordable” by the average boater, but if your standard of living rates it and you want a very big, very plush, very modern deck boat, the Sea Ray SDX 290 will be of interest.

One could easily argue it’s the queen of the deck boat fleet, with Luxurious aft-facing lounges on the stern, bow seats that count as loungers, and top speeds in the 50 MPH range with a pair of 250 HP Mercury Verados on the transom. As one might guess you can get this boat outfitted with uber-cool features, too, like an electric grill in the cockpit, a refrigerator, and even an onboard air compressor for blowing up the kid’s tow-toys.

Billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg spend six figures a year maintaining their superyachts. Here's how.

  • Superyachts  are one of the most expensive assets money can buy.
  • The true cost of ownership is even more, adding up to millions a year.
  • Here's how much it costs to own a superyacht — and what that money is going toward.

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."
