Land Yachting uses 3-wheeled vehicles attached to a sail which can reach speeds in excess of 40mph. The rider sits or lays down, close to the ground, using feet to control the front wheel for steering and hands to control the sail.

Land Yachts can travel at between 2 and 3 times the speed of the wind yet can be propelled by winds of less than 10mph.

Training & Qualifications

Training is offered at BFSLYC registered training centres. There are three levels required before qualifying as a pilot.

Level One – Safety rules and basic practical sailing

Level Two – Rigging a yacht, pre-sailing safety checks and a wide range of sailing skills

Level Three – Sail competently and safely. Understand racing rules.

Pilot’s License – A written theory test is followed by a practical test. Once licenced you are opermitted to race.

Clubs and training schools provide yachts, goggles and helmets. Students often progress to purchase their own yacht. Common types includes class 3, class 5, leisure yachts and parakarts.

Speed along and try your hand something different with this exciting morning of Land Yachting for one.

You may have seen these vehicles zipping around, powered by nothing but the wind and reaching speeds of over 40 mph, and now’s your chance to get into the driving seat and feel the speed for yourself. You’ll have plenty of time to get to grips with the controls, practising on a course designed to hone your skills before heading out onto the open plain to really get the wind in your sails.

These ultra-modern land yachts can travel three or four times faster than the wind speed, so even on a moderately calm day you should be shooting along hair-raisingly fast mere inches from the ground. An expert tutor will be on hand at all times to ensure you get the most that you can from your land-yacht, so expect an adrenaline-fuelled thrill ride from beginning to end and a sporting experience unlike any other.

What happens on the day?

On arrival at the land yacht centre you’ll be greeted by one of the highly-trained instructors before being given a full safety briefing and starter tuition in the correct handling techniques.

As the yachts have no brakes, your instruction will start with stopping safely before moving on to the more advanced steering skills on a special land yacht course. Once you’ve mastered the basics you’ll head out to find out what these amazing vehicles are capable of.

Participant guidelines

• Minimum age: 16
• Maximum weight: 16 stone
• Reasonable agility is required to get into the craft, so if you have any concerns please discuss them with the centre. Participants should have a reasonable level of fitness
• Spectators are welcome
• The experience content, equipment used and restrictions may vary

Availability

Courses run 7 days a week all year round - exclusions may apply.  Most Day Courses start at 10.00 but please check when you book a date for the activity. There is a £10 supplement for weekend and bank holiday bookings (payable when booking).

We recommend you book at least four weeks in advance to ensure that dates are available. All bookings are subject to availability.

Please allow approximately 2 hours for the whole experience.

What about insurance?

The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.

Could be dangerous but o such fun

At 76 years of age I would not have thought I would do this ,My granddaughter booked it for me as a birthday present. It was so much fun.I did ache a bit the next day but if you are young do give it go

A fantastic experience

I had an absolute blast! It was a lovely day, slightly overcast and with a bit of wind. After a safety brief and a demo, we were off reaching up and down this field. When the wind picked up, the organisers reefed the sails and we were again zooming along under control. I am a keen sailor but there were two others in my session that had never sailed and they too were really enjoying it. Highly recommend it and would go again. Such great fun!

A fantastic sporting experience

A fantastic experience of a sport that was completely alien to me. Having gained the hang of the yachting technique the whole event became quite exhilarating. Alan the trainer was very precise and direct with his instructions which enabled me to quickly learn the basics and gain the full experience.

A smile wouldn’t hurt

Great activity which I soured by the very grumpy, unwelcoming and way to laid back instructor Andy. There was no hello when serving on site, which became very uncomfortable. Not much enthusiasm or energy. When being instructed what to do it felt more like he was pissed off with you. A smile really wouldn’t hurt.

Our Location

Fishy's Land Yachts have previously operated on the lovely sandy beach at Greatstone which is opposite Romney Sands Holiday Park .  

Important Notice: Due to the way the beach has changed over the last year or so, it is no longer suitable for us to be able to sail there, the new sailing location is now in a field and is so much better than the beach because we can sail most days and in a lot less wind. We will also have a roundabout in the middle so after a while we can see how much you have learnt, because you can sail on it but got to stop on top of it without going right over!! So we can now make it more fun and do things that we can’t do on the beach.

We can now sail most days subject to availability in a lot less wind. We have free parking, toilets café/restaurant and bar 1 minute walk from where we sail.

Directions: From J10 or J10A on the M20, just follow the A2070 and A259 to Lydd Airport, the post code is TN29 9QL , it’s really easy to find us!!

China and Russia reaffirm their close ties as Moscow presses its offensive in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping reaffirmed their “no-limits” partnership that has deepened as both countries face rising tensions with the West

BEIJING -- Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday reaffirmed their “no-limits” partnership that has deepened as both countries face rising tensions with the West, and they criticized U.S. military alliances in Asia and the Pacific region.

At their summit in Beijing, Putin thanked Xi for China 's proposals for ending the war in Ukraine , which have been rejected by Ukraine and its Western supporters as largely following the Kremlin's line.

Putin’s two-day state visit to one of his strongest allies and trading partners comes as Russian forces are pressing an offensive in northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region in the most significant border incursion since the full-scale invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022.

China claims to take a neutral position in the conflict, but it has backed the Kremlin's contentions that Russia was provoked into attacking Ukraine by the West, and it continues to supply key components needed by Moscow for weapons production.

China, which hasn't criticized the invasion, proposed a broadly worded peace plan in 2023, calling for a cease-fire and for direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv. The plan was rejected by both Ukraine and the West for failing to call for Russia to leave occupied parts of Ukraine.

China also gave a rhetorical nod to Russia’s narrative about Nazism in Ukraine, with a joint statement Thursday that said Moscow and Beijing should defend the post-World War II order and “severely condemn the glorification of or even attempts to revive Nazism and militarism.”

Putin has cited the “denazification” of Ukraine as a main goal of the military action, falsely describing the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is Jewish and lost relatives in the Holocaust, as neo-Nazis.

The largely symbolic and ceremonial visit stressed partnership between two countries who both face challenges in their relationship with the U.S. and Europe.

“Both sides want to show that despite what is happening globally, despite the pressure that both sides are facing from the U.S., both sides are not about to turn their backs on each other anytime soon,” said Hoo Tiang Boon, who researches Chinese foreign policy at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.

While Putin and Xi said they were seeking an end to the war, they offered no new proposals in their public remarks.

“China hopes for the early return of Europe to peace and stability and will continue to play a constructive role toward this,” Xi said in prepared remarks to media in Beijing's Great Hall of the People. His words echoed what China said when it offered a broad plan for peace.

Earlier, Putin was welcomed in Tiananmen Square with military pomp. After a day in Beijing, the Russian leader arrived in Harbin, where he was expected to attend a number of events on Friday.

On the eve of his visit, Putin said China’s proposal could “lay the groundwork for a political and diplomatic process that would take into account Russia’s security concerns and contribute to achieving a long-term and sustainable peace.”

Zelenskyy has said any negotiations must include a restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops, the release of all prisoners, a tribunal for those responsible for the aggression and security guarantees for Ukraine.

After Russia’s latest offensive in Ukraine last week, the war is in a critical stage as Ukraine’s depleted military waits for new supplies of anti-aircraft missiles and artillery shells from the United States after months of delay.

The joint statement from China and Russia also criticized U.S. foreign policy at length, hitting out at U.S.-formed alliances, which the statement called having a “Cold War mentality.”

China and Russia also accused the U.S. of deploying land-based intermediate range missile systems in the Asia-Pacific under the pretext of joint exercises with allies. They said that the U.S. actions in Asia were “changing the balance of power” and “endangering the security of all countries in the region.”

The joint statement demonstrated China's support to Russia.

China is “falling over themselves to give Russia face and respect without saying anything specific, and without committing themselves to anything,” said Susan Thornton, a former diplomat and a senior fellow at the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale Law School.

The meeting was yet another affirmation of the friendly “no-limits” relationship China and Russia signed in 2022, just before Moscow invaded Ukraine.

Since then, Russia has become increasingly dependent economically on China as Western sanctions cut its access to much of the international trading system. China’s increased trade with Russia, totaling $240 billion last year, has helped the country mitigate some of the worst blowback from sanctions.

Moscow has diverted the bulk of its energy exports to China and relied on Chinese companies for importing high-tech components for Russian military industries to circumvent Western sanctions.

“I and President Putin agree we should actively look for convergence points of the interests of both countries, to develop each’s advantages, and deepen integration of interests, realizing each others’ achievements,” Xi said.

U.S. State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said that China can't "have its cake and eat it too.

“You cannot want to have deepened relations with Europe … while simultaneously continuing to fuel the biggest threat to European security in a long time,” Patel said.

Xi congratulated Putin on starting his fifth term in office and celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the former Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China, which was established following a civil war in 1949. Putin has eliminated all major political opponents and faced no real challenge in the March election.

“In a famous song of that time, 75 years ago — it is still performed today — there is a phrase that has become a catchphrase: ‘Russians and Chinese are brothers forever,’” Putin said.

Russia-China military ties have strengthened during the war. They have held a series of joint war games in recent years.

China remains a major market for Russian military, while also massively expanding its domestic defensive industries, including building aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines.

Putin has previously said that Russia has been sharing highly sensitive military technologies with China that helped significantly bolster its defense capability.

Russia's strategic energy ties with China are a boon for the global economy, President Vladimir Putin has said, adding that cooperation on this front will only gain momentum.

On Friday, the Russian leader attended the opening ceremony of the Russia-China EXPO, which is being held in the northeastern Chinese city of Harbin from May 17-21. The event serves as a major platform for economic partnership, promoting business opportunities, investment, and technology exchange.

Addressing participants of the exhibition, Putin said both countries can be proud of their bilateral economic ties, as trade turnover has reached $240 billion. This cooperation, he added, boosts the economies of both powers, raises living standards, and promotes energy security.

The Russian leader singled out the latter, stressing that "our strategic alliance in the energy sector, which has become a robust pillar of the entire global energy market... will continue to grow stronger."

Russia "is ready and able to reliably and without interruptions supply the Chinese economy, enterprises, cities, and towns with environmentally friendly, affordable energy, electricity, and heat," he added.

The two countries also have strong industrial ties, with Chinese carmakers actively rolling out their products in the Russian market, while Moscow and Beijing are advancing joint civil aviation projects, Putin said.

After Western countries imposed unprecedented sanctions on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict, Russian energy exports to the EU significantly plummeted. According to Eurostat, Russian oil and gas exports to the bloc amounted to more than €29 billion ($31.5 billion) in 2023, with overall trade turnover three times lower than in 2022.

However, Moscow ramped up energy deliveries to Asia, particularly China. According to Bloomberg, Russia became China's biggest source of oil, exporting a record 107 million tons of crude in 2023, a quarter more than in 2022.
