Formula 1 Powerboat Racing Championship Lands in Alton

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Alton, IL – Jan. 25, 2024) Ever dreamed of watching boats flying across the waters of the Mississippi River at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour? That dream has just become reality with the news that Formula 1 Powerboat racing is coming to the Mississippi River in Alton June 21-23 with a multi-day event featuring Formula 1 Powerboats, Tunnel Boats and Tri-Hulls. The Formula 1 Powerboat Championship will take place on the Mississippi River at the Alton riverfront with a series of six to eight races. The races will include the sleek and glamorous F1 Powerboats, 12-foot Tunnel boats, Tri-Hulls based on a pleasure boat design and J-Hydro, 12-foot Knee Rider Boats for racers ages 9 to 16 years. “This is a terrific addition to the sporting events the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau has been able to attract over the last three years,” Cory Jobe, President and CEO of the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau said. “We want to thank the City of Alton for approving this event and we are looking forward to enjoying a weekend of powerboat racing and community fun along the city’s riverfront.” The event is expected to draw 20,000-plus spectators and bring in an economic impact to the region of over $2.5 million. The Tourism Bureau is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Coast Guard for approval and assistance with water safety. “On behalf of the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship, we are very excited to bring Formula 1 powerboat racing back to Alton,” said Tim Seebold, Managing Director of Formula 1 Powerboat Championship. “It will be fantastic returning to the Mississippi River in downtown Alton Illinois showcasing our world class Formula 1 drivers and their technologically advanced powerboats in conjunction with the Midwest Nationals.” F1 Powerboat competition begins with a 20-plus boat field lined on the start pontoon with their engines silent. At the drop of the green flag, the drivers ignite their engines, shooting thousands of gallons of rooster tailed water over 150-feet high as they accelerate to the first turn. The spectator friendly racing on a tight course is made up of a combination of right and left hand hairpin turns with various straightaways providing deck to deck action in front of fans. No two laps are the same due to the ever-changing wind and water conditions. “Our family friendly events have an open pit area for the fans to meet the drivers and marvel at the machines they drive,” Seebold noted. “Alton holds a special place in my heart with its rich powerboat racing history. Our family began racing on the Mississippi River starting with my grandfather back in 1939 and has continued with my father, older brother, and myself. Growing up in the greater metropolitan St. Louis area strengthened mine, like many St. Louis area fans F1 Powerboat racing enthusiasm as we all attended the St. Louis Grand Prix races for over 38 years. It has been fantastic to bring powerboat racing back to the area with all the local support. I know this will be a monumental event for everyone involved.” More details on the races and additional riverfront activities will be announced closer to the event. -30- (The Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau is a certified Destination Marketing Organization serving Madison, Jersey, Calhoun, Macoupin, Montgomery and Greene counties and East St. Louis in St. Clair County. NGK F1 Powerboat Championships Series Joining Upcoming Lake Race

History will be made on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks in a few weeks when the NGK Spark Plugs Formula One Powerboat Championship Series brings world-class tunnel-boat-racing action to the popular waterway for the first time. Building off the momentum of this season’s first two events in Port Neches, Texas, the NGK F1 Series is going to run its third round as a companion event to the Offshore Powerboat Association -sanctioned Lake Race at Bagnell Dam on June 3-5.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, Lake of the Ozarks also happens to be the hometown of NGK F1 Series director, Tim Seebold, who is very excited to bring the high-octane outboard racing to lake, fulfilling a dream he has envisioned for quite some time.

Longtime F1 racing fans will remember that the state of Missouri was once a stronghold for high-stakes tunnel-boat racing, as it hosted the St. Louis Grand Prix dating back nearly 50 years. Originally held at George Winter Park in Fenton from 1972 to 1999, the race moved to Creve Coeur Lake Park starting in 2000. The 37th and last St. Louis Grand Prix race was held in 2008.

“Since the inception of the NGK F1 Powerboat Championship in 2017 we have wanted to bring F1 powerboat racing back to Missouri,” Seebold said in a press release. “The outboard-racing tradition that began 49 years ago with the Concord Village Lions Club producing the first St. Louis Grand Prix at George Winter Park will once again thrill racing fans as the F1 boats light up the waters of my hometown. It is going to be a special event for powerboat racing fans to see the impressive high-horsepower offshore boats, the agile F1 boats along with the crowd-favorite Tri Hull division all on the water in the same day.

“Thanks to Tom Abbett of Lake Race and OPA’s Ed “Smitty” Smith for the shared infrastructure that has made this all possible,” he added. “We are fortunate and extend our appreciation to Shady Gators, Backwater Jacks, Dog Days, ProServ Business Systems and Ozark Touchless Covers for believing in our vision of bringing these powerboat disciplines together.”

Smith, the president of OPA, agreed that the announcement is great news for the racing community.

“We have learned through our partnership with Powerboat P1 how powerful these partnerships can be,” Smitty said in the release. “I have always wanted to watch the F1 boats race, but never had the opportunity to attend one of their events. Thanks to Tim Seebold for reaching out to us. This is going to be a big boost for us all.”

Abbett, president of the Lake Race Board of Directors, said the board is extremely excited with the addition of the NGK F1 Powerboat Series to the 2021 Lake Race event, which features the new Neon Taco as its primary host location.

“We have been discussing this for a few months, and once Tim Seebold and I met at the racecourse site by the dam, we knew we had to figure out a way to make it happen,” Abbett said in the release. “This addition of different classes will certainly add to the non-stop, on-course racing action and I cannot wait to see the dead start for the F1 boats from the docks; one of the coolest starts in all of racing. This addition will be a ‘must see’ for boating enthusiasts and race fans of all ages.”

According to the release, the public is invited to meet the racers at the Racer’s Reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Camden on the Lake Boardwalk. At noon on Friday, the race pits will begin set up followed by a Lake Race Street Party open to the public at Bagnell Dam Strip from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday’s race-day action, which includes Offshore, Formula 1 and Tri Hull, will start with testing at 9 a.m. and the full-throttle, deck-to-deck competition is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All of the racing action from Saturday will be broadcast via livestream from the NGK F1 website and the NGK F1 Facebook page utilizing a revolutionary live timing system, which allows fans to watch the rapid-paced race positioning in real time while watching the livestream. Additional viewing can be found on the American Broadcast Affiliates airing the show on live national television, where an estimated 40+ million viewers will have the chance to watch the event on broadcast and cable television.

Tue jan 09 2024, powerboat p1 unveils 2024 p1 offshore and class 1 race calendar.

  • P1 race events to be part of the APBA national championship
  • New end of season dates for Sarasota and St. Pete grand prix
  • Mercury Racing event to return to Sheboygan after 2023 success

We love all forms of racing at Monster Energy and entering the UIM Class 1 World Championship and APBA National Championship, as well as the P1 AquaX National Championship, in 2023 genuinely thrilled us with the sport’s amazing and vibrant mix of racing, competition and amazing fan attention, interaction and enthusiasm. We’re thrilled to title sponsor the final round of the national championship. Dave Gowland Monster Energy

Powerboat P1 has today announced its P1 Offshore race calendar for the 2024 season, which sees the series heading to Wisconsin again and returning to favorite venues in Florida. The Sarasota and St. Petersburg grand prix events on Florida’s Gulf Coast move away from their traditional dates around the Independence Day and Labor Day vacations respectively and will provide an exhilarating climax to the season in September and October.

Cocoa Beach on the Space Coast will again host the season opener in mid-May with a weekend of ‘fast boats and cold drinks.’ Thunder On Cocoa Beach will be celebrating its 15th anniversary of staging this event and its Executive Director, Kerry Bartlett will be unveiling special plans to mark this milestone.

In August, racing will return to Sheboygan on the western shore of Lake Michigan for a second year. Sheboygan Area Tourism Zone reported that last season’s inaugural Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge delivered an economic impact of $4.7 million with more than 40,000 attending the three-day festival, and this year’s event in August will be open to all offshore classes. Mayor Ryan Sorenson said: “I am thrilled to welcome back this exhilarating event to the Malibu of the Midwest. It not only showcases our City’s stunning waterfront but also brings together the community in celebration of speed, skill and the thrill of competition. This sense of excitement and unity contributes to the vibrancy of Sheboygan.” City Administrator Casey Bradley added: “This event not only brings a surge of energy to our City but also underscores our commitment to hosting world class events. We appreciate the partnership with Powerboat P1 and Mercury Racing, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact the race event will have on our local economy and community spirit.”

Another event milestone will be celebrated in September with the 40th anniversary of the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, making it the second longest-running powerboat festival in the United States. For decades the racing has been a unique, prestigious event that brings significant value to the county. Local media reports that it generates millions of dollars in economic impact every year with up to 16,000 room nights, and P1’s national and international television deals showcase the city’s many attractions to an audience of more than 200 million homes. Pete Harvey, Director of Sports at Visit Sarasota County commented: “The Grand Prix draws enthusiastic crowds, capturing the attention of visitors and residents alike. It attracts a diverse range of attendees which generates a sizeable surge in tourism and spending.”

Our goal is to have a fleet of 12 Class 1 boats by 2025. We want to grow the world championship commercially and promote the series both in the United States and internationally to deliver enhanced value for race teams, host venues, sponsors and partners. Azam Rangoonwala Powerboat P1, CEO

The season finale will see the race teams head along the Gulf Coast to St. Petersburg for the Monster Energy St. Pete Grand Prix. Now in its fourth year, the event has quickly become a favorite venue will the racers and it will see the APBA national champions crowned in October. “We’re excited to see one of America’s best waterfront locations selected to host the Powerboat P1 grand prix event,” commented Visit St. Pete/Clearwater President/CEO Brian Lowack. “We love the opportunity to show off the spectacular downtown St. Pete waterfront and award-winning St. Pete Pier as spectators come from near and far to our beautiful destination or tune in on TV around the globe to see some of the most exciting action on water.”

Dave Gowland of Monster Energy said: “We love all forms of racing at Monster Energy and entering the UIM Class 1 World Championship and APBA National Championship, as well as the P1 AquaX National Championship, in 2023 genuinely thrilled us with the sport’s amazing and vibrant mix of racing, competition and amazing fan attention, interaction and enthusiasm. We’re thrilled to title sponsor the final round of the national championship.”

Seven teams are expected to compete in this season’s UIM Class 1 World Championship and races will be staged at the P1 Offshore events. Powerboat P1’s aim is to attract more teams and build the worldwide television audience to return Class 1 to the summit of the sport. “Our goal is to have a fleet of 12 boats by 2025” said P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala. “We want to grow the world championship commercially and promote the series both in the United States and internationally to deliver enhanced value for race teams, host venues, sponsors and partners.”

“The 2023 offshore season was one of great change and growth” explains Rangoonwala. “This season we will seek further growth by focusing on attracting more competitors, particularly young racers, improving the fan experience, continuing to build our social media audience and broadening the international reach of our TV broadcast deals. Having celebrated our 20th anniversary last year, Powerboat P1 is embarking on its third decade as a promoter and we will continue to design our race events to encourage tourism and enhance the profile of the host venues. Partnerships are at the heart of our business and over the coming months we will be announcing new agreements as well as the renewal of existing sponsorships.”

How can I watch the Chinese Grand Prix?

If you’re in the US and want to watch the Chinese Grand Prix, you can tune in on ESPN and ESPN+ . They’ll also have coverage of practice, sprint qualifying, the sprint race, and main race qualifying.

When is practice, qualifying and the sprint race?

Practice will take place at 11:30am local time on Friday 19 April (11:30pm ET/8:30pm PT on Thursday 18) .

This weekend is one of six on the 2024 calendar that offer drivers the chance to win additional points in the sprint race. Sprint qualifying is scheduled for 3:30pm local time on Friday (3:30am ET/12:30am PT), before the sprint race gets going at 11am local time on Saturday 20 April (11pm ET/8pm PT on Friday) .

Qualifying for the main race is then slated for 3pm local time on Saturday (3am ET/12 midnight PT on Saturday morning) .

How does F1′s sprint race work?

The sprint race is much shorter, covering a distance of about 60 miles and lasting for about 30 minutes .

“ The venues chosen for sprint events are all tracks with great overtaking potential , picked to try and ensure the sprint is a flat-out, aggressive melee from start to finish,” the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) says .

Points are awarded to the top eight finishers in the sprint event : the winner receives eight, with each driver after that given one fewer than the man ahead of him. In 2024, there will also be sprint races at the Austrian, Austin, Brazilian, Miami and Qatari Grands Prix.
