Viking Yachts 64 Review

Seventy 62-foot convertibles have been delivered by Viking—six of them were used as part of the company’s demo program on the national and international stage. The popular model was highly regarded for both speed and performance. They were well-equipped and raised fish, but replacing a winner is never easy. In the past two decades, Viking has designed and delivered 550 boats from 60 to 70 feet, and there is no doubt it owns this segment of the production boating market. The new 64 is true to form, and it refuses to live in any other’s shadow.

Viking’s mantra is to build a better boat every day —a philosophy fostered by co-founders Bill and Bob Healey. These days, the second and third generation of Healeys are taking the reins, and the commitment remains as steadfast and relentless as ever as the company’s shipwrights navigate into their 58th year of building state-of-the-art tournament contenders.

The cockpit is ground zero for tournament fishing. With 180 square feet of usable space, every inch has purpose. A pressurized 90-gallon transom livewell keeps bait ready for action, and the mezzanine conceals a freezer, chiller box, and tackle and gear storage. A portside step can be outfitted to stockpile ice or utilize an electric grill. The flybridge overhang delivers spray and sun protection, and air conditioning provides a cool breeze on those breathless tropical days. Centerline finds a watertight lazarette, with an optional power actuator to access the Seakeeper 26 gyrostabilizer. Corner scuppers drain water quickly, and can also be plumbed if you choose to fish with removable livewells. Fixtures for raw and fresh water as well as quick-disconnect fittings for oil changes and filling the water tank are located beneath the coaming boards, along with both 12- and 24-volt outlets and portside and starboard-side storage lockers.

Engine Room

The Snow White Awlgrip-finished engine room is a uniform work of art. Entered through the mezzanine, headroom on the centerline is more than 6 feet, with a solid 26½ inches between the irons. A pair of 21.5 kW Onan gensets are situated aft of the engines for those who prefer redundancy, and the twin setup is flawless.

The aft bulkhead is lined with DC and Octoplex distribution panels, Mastervolt battery chargers and Dometic refrigeration. The oil-transfer system for the engines, transmissions, generators, bilge pumps and various seacocks are labeled in typical Viking fashion, and all hoses and wire-runs throughout the machinery space are chafe-protected, neat and secure. Forward finds a toolbox, AC units, and the Furuno Omni sonar tube. Movement outboard is virtually effortless, and the equipment is lined up in military precision. To port is the main switch for the Side-Power DC bow thruster controls and the ElectroSea Clearline growth-prevention system; to starboard, the Dometic-Spot Zero watermaker combo, Willy Vac and Headhunter freshwater pump are easily accessible. A Delta-T ventilation and ­water-suppression system supplies the engine room with clean, ambient airflow.

The sheer volume of the 64’s wide beam invites an uncluttered view forward—accented with satin-finished horizontal grain walnut that adds dimension throughout the interior. An electrical panel at eye level provides convenient access to the ship’s systems, and an adjacent 50-inch high-definition television rises from the cabinetry opposite the L-shaped sofa that hides significant storage inside.

A dinette is situated to port, and the raised base conceals another one of the yacht’s storage areas. The peninsula-style galley and bar feature engineered-stone counters and a pair of stools. Top-notch appliances, ample storage and premium vinyl Amtico flooring are among the standard highlights; an island galley option is available for those who prefer it.

Below, the four-stateroom, three-head layout provides the same striking walnut joinery, comfort and privacy, including a walk-around bed in the master, a choice of forward stateroom accommodations, and even more storage. A companionway laundry center adds to the 64’s numerous amenities.

Viking’s popular center-console helm station ramps up style and practicalities with a newly designed black acrylic helm dash featuring three flush-mounted Seatronx touchscreen displays. The angle of the dash brings the screens closer to the ­skipper to shorten the reach, and the entire console has been raised for better access to the radio boxes that flank the teak helm pod. Two boxes in the fiberglass hardtop house additional electronics and displays, as well as a set of teaser reels. The controller for the Omni sonar stows beneath the helm and includes a remote for the operator.

Three Release Marine Trillion helm chairs provide comfort for those long offshore jaunts, with convenient fore and aft drink boxes. Port and starboard benches provide storage, while the forward lounge sits on top of a 76-gallon freezer—another nod to the boat’s long-range travel capability.

Performance and Construction

Off the coast of Palm Beach, Florida, with Capt. Ryan Higgins—Viking’s Southeast sales manager and 15-year demo veteran—at the wheel, the 64-footer ripped into a two-way average top speed of 42 knots burning 200 gph with a near-full load of fuel. In a 2- to 3-foot sea and 10- to 12-knot northeast breeze, the boat was smooth and chatter-free; the wake was crisp and well-defined. Viking’s design manager, David Wilson, explains some of the details of this new hull’s running surface: “The refinements include the chine angle of attack and a softer radius transitioning from the deadrise to the chine. We also slightly lowered the strakes in the bow for increased spray-deflection. Moving aft, the chines widen, and together with the strakes, they provide excellent lift. We also changed the shaft angle and the propeller-pocket diameter, length and entry for better water flow to the props, and to minimize draft.”

As I took the helm, the tie-bar-free SeaStar Optimus steering connected me instinctively to every maneuver I made. Slipping along at 1,800 rpm, we were making 29 knots using 122 gallons of fuel for a range of 403 nautical miles, while a brisk 35 knots at 2,100 rpm burned 156 gph for a range of 385 nm.

The new Viking 64 utilizes the builder’s proprietary manufacturing processes, including a vinylester resin-infused fiberglass hull with composite coring ­material throughout, structural composite bulkheads and integrated, resin-infused tankage. Vertically unified from design to delivery, 90 percent of what goes into building a Viking 64 is manufactured at its facility in New Gretna, New Jersey, and the company subsidiaries—Atlantic Marine Electronics and Palm Beach Towers—help produce a turnkey product for a seamless build experience.

As Viking continues its head-down, nose-to-the-grindstone approach to the ever-evolving boating market, we are sure to see replacement models take hold. After all, as Abraham Lincoln once said: “The most reliable way to predict the future is to create it.”

The Story Behind Viking Yacht's Gen II 58 Convertible

"Right from the beginning the philosophy, design, and engineering was lean (and) efficient really, were two big words surrounding the whole principal of getting the boat developed early on. Now everything is foam, balsa core, and a lot more foam, actually. So a lot of advancements there where we were able to add core, change laminations, get some weight out of the boat in the FRP products. Being an engineered and design driven company, that has really grown quite a bit," said David Wilson, Viking Yachts Design Manager.

There has been a lot of excitement and intrigue around the new Viking 58 Convertible which will make its debut at the upcoming Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. With one of the top design teams in the world and the most advanced boat building factory assembled in the U.S., when Viking launches a new model people take notice. The original 58 convertible that first debuted back in the 1990's was a phenomenally successful model selling over 100 units at the time. There have been many evolutions in boat design, materials, and construction since the first 58 was splashed, even just starting with the inclusion of a Seakeeper Gyro. Cockpits have gotten larger, fishing equipment on board is more advanced, and the interior accommodations have certainly grown more luxurious.

David Wilson was on the design team back when the original 58 Convertible first launched. "I'd say the philosophy was similar," he said when asked about comparing the first generation 58 to the new model. "We can talk about the attention given, and that the lean and efficient philosophy is greater now. But I think what Bill (Healey) started back then in that generation we applied really that same effort. You know the team that built that boat, a lot of us are still here....Form the beginning the philosophy driven from Pat (Healey) on performance and speed was efficiency. And with that, we were slated with 10-cylinder engines. We were given a speed of 41, 42 knots and that's what we had to achieve."

Cockpit on the Viking 58C

Good luck finding a fighting cockpit this big and as decked out on a sub-60 foot sportfish. Measuring in at 165 square feet thanks to a 18'+ beam, the cockpit has plenty of room for a crew to move around an angler in the fighting chair, the rod holders, and outrigger lines that may be in the way during a tournament. When a big Marlin is on the line, seconds can count. You don't want your crew running into each other and getting tangled up. The 58 Convertible does a good job keeping the cockpit area spacious and hiding things like livewells and storage. And you absolutely cannot beat watching the action unfold from Viking's signature observation mezzanine.

Flybridge on the Viking 58C

Viking moved away from the traditional sportfish upper helm for this center-line design that is efficient for the captain and provides great visibility. The command station has plenty of room to walk around, the electronics are within reach without stretching, and it is equipped with power-assisted hydraulic steering, single-lever electronic controls with station select and keypad, and electronic trolling valves. Anyone riding up top with the captain will love the cushy helm seat as well as the lounges that are port and starboard on the bridge.

Salon & Galley on the Viking 58C

The interior of the 58 Convertible is very similar to her larger siblings, the 68C and 72C , in terms of layout, high-gloss finish, big windows port and starboard, and the Corian countertops. The 58C has a center-line walkway which makes moving from the aft cockpit to the bow of the boat very convenient. The lounge seat is an L-shape which is great for socializing at the end of the day and there are hidden storage compartments everywhere. There's nothing better than after a long day fishing in the sun to come and rejuvenate yourself in front of the entertainment center with a nice meal prepared in your full galley.

Accommodations on the Viking 58C

Extended, overnight trips on the Viking 58 Convertible are not only manageable, but very enjoyable! The master stateroom is huge for this size of boat and is placed on portside. It features a queen-sized walk-around berth with storage under the mattress as well as in nightstands, hanging lockers and other areas. The master suite has an en suite head, while the other two staterooms share a head. The VIP cabin is placed in the bow and can be outfitted with either another queen-sized berth or over-under bunks.

Powered with twin state-of-the-art 1,945 hp MTU diesels, it tops out from 26.5 to 27.5 knots and cruises from 21 to 24 knots, with a range exceeding 400 nautical miles at cruising speeds.

And it’s big, accommodating and comfortable. With a 24-foot-4-inch beam, the 93 holds five staterooms and seven heads, two expansive salons and aft decks, a huge forward galley, 12 televisions, storage for a tender, and crew quarters for three.

The exterior profile is both sleek and timeless, and perhaps most importantly, it looks and feels like a Viking. The impressive helm offers outstanding visibility.

Yes, the enclosed bridge is visually striking, but it’s also amazingly functional, combining all the visibility benefits of an elevated control station with the weather protection and comfort of a Viking enclosed bridge. The sky-bridge command station shares many of the design traits of Viking’s open flybridge convertibles, such as the walkaround center-console with raised teak helm pod, and recessed and protected areas for multifunction displays, engine and steering controls, and electronics controllers. The enclosed bridge has a forward wraparound console that includes a Stidd helm seat and flanking companion seating.

Once inside this beauty, you’ll instantly understand why Viking describes this spacious interior as a “showpiece of elegance and luxury.” The 24-foot beam allows the salon to transform into a stately, expansive living room. The L-shaped galley offers plenty of storage for provisions, with two walk-in pantries, while a formal dining area can accommodate up to eight guests.

Below, Viking masterfully arranged five en-suite staterooms plus a day head. The full-beam master suite features a king-size walkaround bed, a walk-in closet, a dressing table and his-and-hers private facilities. Crew quarters are aft, with access from the cockpit.

Viking Yachts 82-Foot Cockpit Motoryacht

Consider the bar raised again for luxury and seagoing excellence. The follow-up and sistership to the 75MY, the Viking Yachts 82-foot Cockpit motoryacht is offered with either an open bridge for more outdoor enjoyment or an enclosed bridge for climate control.

The 82CPMY effortlessly transitions from a luxurious cruiser to a bluewater battlewagon, creating the ideal platform for tournament fishing one day and heading on a three-week vacation the next. It features the cockpit space of a large convertible (108 square feet), along with plenty of room for relaxing, maximized by the versatile deck design that features an observation mezzanine, aft-deck dinette with U-shaped settee, and a 9-foot-wide lounge molded into the mezzanine that features loads of amenities.

The open-bridge layout is all about connecting with the open ocean, friends and family, with a centerline helm forward flanked with casual seating areas. Behind the helm, a family-size dinette, wet bar with refrigeration, sink and electric grill allow the party to start and stay on the bridge if desired. Farther aft, there is a sun pad, room for lounge chairs and a teak-planked staircase to the lower aft deck.

The climate-controlled enclosed bridge adds the convenience of a second salon, with plush seating, an entertainment center and the utility of a fully protected upper command station. A sliding glass door opens to the aft deck, with a wet bar and room for lounges.

The stylish main deck keeps the entertaining rolling, whether outdoors or in, with forward and aft deck lounges and 8 tons of chilled-water air conditioning providing a climate-controlled environment where a lavish walnut salon, formal and casual dining areas, and a world-class galley set a festive mood. Standard amenities in the low-profile open galley include engineered-stone countertops, under-counter refrigerator and freezer units, high-gloss walnut cabinetry and a starboard-side pantry. Viking also offers a closed-galley design.

Below deck, four luxuriously appointed en-suite staterooms exquisitely balance elegance and practicality. Natural light streams in through the large hull-side windows and foredeck skylight.

Atlantic Marine Electronics outfitted the 82 with custom-designed navigation and entertainment systems, meaning it’s turnkey ready for its new owner.

Viking Yachts 75-Foot Motoryacht

As much as Viking’s announcement that it was re-entering the motoryacht market sent tremors through the yachting industry, the unveiling of the breathtaking, speedy Viking Yachts 75MY was met with 10.0-magnitude earthquake shock waves.

Recognizing the strong demand for a high-quality, American-made motoryacht with an emphasis on style and performance, Viking answered by introducing a true masterpiece.

Engineering the Viking Longboat

The Vikings are coming. Again.

After a 900-year hiatus, Viking culture and all things Nordic are suddenly landing on shorelines around the world. From the History Channel's ratings juggernaut Vikings , to 2011's blockbuster Thor , to the upcoming summer epics Hammer of the Gods and Thor 2 , it is suddenly very cool to be a Northman. Even HBO's fictional Game of Thrones is set in the distinctly Viking-esque kingdom of Westeros.

And yet, surprisingly little is known about this ancient culture that so thoroughly changed the world, and that has so thoroughly captured the imagination of scriptwriters, viewers…and engineers alike. "There's much more that's unknown [of the Viking Age], or even unknowable, than there is that is known," says Dr. William Short, who holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but who is now an author and independent scholar specializing in Viking-age topics, as well as being a research Fellow of the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, MA. He teaches Viking martial arts on his site, Hurstwic.org .

One thing we do know for certain, however, is that they could sail. And how.

The Viking longboat, along with a related design called the "knarr" for shipping cargo, is a true engineering marvel of the ancient world, and in light of the fact that modern replicas have been apocryphally clocked at 25 knots, these boats are a marvel to this very day, over a millennium later.

"First of all, they [longboats] had very shallow drafts, so they could sail in very shallow water, which meant they could go anywhere," says Short. "They were strong enough to cross the open ocean, but they were shallow enough that they could go way up river and truly surprise people in places where no one expected an ocean-going ship to appear."

And surprise people they did, with Viking culture fundamentally reshaping the people and culture of the British Isles, while simultaneously spreading as far east as modern Russia and as far southeast as modern-day Turkey, where the "Varangian Guard" served Byzantine emperors for centuries. At the heart of it all, of course, was the longboat, their unparalleled means of transportation .

"Another thing they [longboats] could do was sail very close to the wind – atypical for European ships of that time," Short continues. "So they could sail in many directions, and unexpected directions given the wind." One of the advances that enabled this virtually unique ability, related to "tacking" in today's terminology, was the "beitass," which was a spar that helped brace the sail against strong winds.

However, one curiously modern advance in the engineering of the longboat seems to be the flexibility of the vessel. Anyone who has seen an airplane wing bounce up and down in a high wind knows how critical flexibility can be to the structural integrity of any vessel, particularly one trying to navigate huge ocean swells far out to sea. The Vikings seem to have grasped this concept much earlier than many other cultures.

"They could cross the open ocean and the swells and the waves of the open ocean and they were able to do that because of their flexibility," says Short. "They [the longboats] weren't firmly nailed together, they actually bent with the waves rather than taking the full force of the waves and possibly breaking."

Combine all of these engineering elements – shallow draft, the ability to sail in any direction, and an incredibly durable, flexible design – and you had a boat that could create a distinct advantage for an early middle ages people, whether in warfare, trade, or exploration. But this particular people had one additional advantage, at least as far as discovery and exploration went. This advantage had nothing to with engineering and everything to do with psychology and the type of thinking that would enable a group of sailors to head for the horizon on the open ocean, not having any idea what would greet them when they got there. In effect, to go on what many would have considered an early middle ages suicide mission.

"The other aspect is the mindset of the Vikings," says Short. "These people believed that at the moment of your birth, the time of your death was chosen for you. So if it was your day to die, nothing could save you. But if it wasn't your day to die, nothing could harm you. So why not go out and be bold?"

Why not, indeed. With a mentality that truly lent itself to bold exploration and discovery, it is little wonder the Vikings accomplished all that they did. However, the next time an episode of Vikings comes on television, or you're in the middle of a crowded theater at one of this summer's blockbusters, keep in mind that things like draft, tacking, and stress analysis were just as responsible for the adventures we still enjoy watching today.

Building a Viking ship or a boat of Norse design involves a traditional craftsmanship which is a refined art, delivered from master to apprentice, usually from father to son for generations. The skills vere passed on as tacit knowledge, mostly orally and by by practising the craft, usually without any detailed drawings or accurate diagrams. In additon, very often the crafter was himself an experienced seafarer, having participated in seasonal fisheries in the fjords and offshore from his early teens, giving him a first hand experience of what distinguished a good boat from a dangerous one. I have not yet built a wooden boat myself, but by visiting and knowing several boat builders I have a fair understanding of the main principles of how it has been and still is done in north-western Norway. This page is meant to explain some of the basic steps of norse wooden shipbuilding, and should not be regarded as a complete how-to guide as skill and experience is difficult to pass on in plain text. Lapstrake - clinker boat building The clinkered Viking ships stands in strong contast to the carvel method where strakes are fastened onto a skeleton of ribs. The Vikings applied a shell-first sequence , laying the keel first, then adding strakes and fitting the internal timbers as the last stage. A Viking ship is much lighter and more flexible than a carvel built ship of the same size, giving the Viking ship both excellent seaworthyness and making it capable of crossing shallow waters as rivers and allowing the crew to pull it ashore in a hurry. The steps mentioned here is for smaller tradition boats as I have seen it, but the Viking ship were built in the same manner. The larger ships are reinforced in the stem and the stern in comparison to the smaller boats and the scale is, of course, much larger. This following description is roughly how clinker built boats have been made traditionally in Scandinavia. The earliest boats were sewn with animal guts, but were soon replaced with rivets as soon as iron gradually became accessible for the boat builders some 1700 years ago. The iron rivets are still called 'saum' in Norwegian dialects, literally meaning 'stitch', revealing an unbroken tradition of lapstrake building that reaches beyond the Iron age. More about the oselvar >> Arrangement for supporting the hull before the ribs are mounted. The boat is a færing from Sunnmøre during building. Crafter is Jakob S. Bjørkedal from Volda in Norway. Every part of the hull have specific names, even each of the strakes. This boat from Sunnmøre is unfinished for demonstration purpose. Some of the hand tools used today in wooden boat building. A major difference from the viking age is the development of good saws and planes. The Viking ship hull The keel is cut and planed into its T- or Yshape and levelled onto temporary wooden blocks fastened to the floor in the workshop. The measures of the keel is of couse according to the chosen boat design. The keel must be cept firmly in position. It should be made from dry and 'dead' wood to prevent deformations during the construction, and, of course, be absolutely straight as seem from above. Some Viking ships, as the Oseberg ship, have a rockered keel, which means that the keel have to be fashioned into a curve before any strakes can be fitted. Many crafts also sported shallow false keels (on. ' drag ') to protect the keel and bows from wear after repeated beachings. Attach the false keel now, if it was present originally. Keel sections with T or Y -profile are always clinkered, while rebated sections are secured with long nails with roseheads (5" - 6" in larger ships). The stem and stern is fastened to the keel using wooden plugs or sturdy nails and roves, and adjusted into position using supporting rods attached to a rugged beam above the boat. Proof the overlapping surfaces with thick pine tar before final mounting. Any ornamentation of the stem and stern should be carved in advance, as well as giving the stem its final curvature. Stepped stems with 'wings' are particularly challenging to make. Building temporary scaffolds fore and aft can be necessary before the bow pieces can be fitted properly. Longships will normally require transition timbers between the keel and the bows; short keel extentions that were called 'undirluthr' in Old Norse. The first two strakes are dressed (or sawn) and planed into shape and fastened to the keel at each side by iron clinkering through the T-profile of the keel, just as if the keel was a strake. Starting aft at the stern, each plank is temporarily fastened with clamps to adjust and fine tune the bevel along the top edge of the strake. Several adjustments and trials may have to be carried out until the plank can be permanently clinkered. The strake ends next to the stem and stern (the 'hals') are thinner (~ 50%) than the strakes amidships to make it easier to twist and bend them into the correct position. Stubborn strakes can be steamed to make them more flexible. Before final clinking, the edge of each strake must be proofed against leaks. Traditionally the caulking was done with animal hairs (usually from sheep or cows) or yarn proofed with tar, applied onto the lower inner edge (the land) of each successive strake. The area of each strake which overlaps with the next strake, the land, is called " sud " (from old norse "suð"), a term which is inherited from the seamed joinery in the much earlier skinboats. The nails are set from the outside and clinkered to their counterparts; the 'roves', on the inside. Drill pilot holes for the nails, and use a dolly in the inside while driving the nails through the strakes. Any excess length of the nail shaft is cut away and the rivet rounded by simultaneously hammering from each side, peening down the nail stub to a small lump which secures the rove. The following strakes are attached to each previous strake by overlapping about an inch, somewhat more in larger ships. The strakes are kept in position by supporting rods both before and after they are clinkered together. At this stage the hull is formed, 'laying out' the floor strakes in the bilge. The strakes are adjusted into position by supporting rods to the floor and to the beam above the boat ( see illustration ). The symmetry of each side has to be checked carefully, as any errors in shape are hard to correct later. On larger ships the sheer mass of the planks will make supporting rods on the upper side obsolete. When a new plank is finished on one side, it can be used as a template to mirror the corresponding strake on the opposite side. Sight along the edges of the subsequently fitted strakes to adjust for any bumps, cavities, hewing or fashioning the edge to ensure a smooth line before fitting the next strake. A hole (ca 1") to drain the hull when the boat is pulled ashore should be made in one of the garboards. In particular, if you are building in the open, the hull will collect rain water which have to be evacuated also in the construction period. The hole is best placed somewhere aft of the mast close to the keel. If you want to copy a successful hull design, interior templates can be used to adjust the positions of the strakes before fastening. When most strakes have been clinkered, up to the ' meginhufr ' ('the strong strake', see below), it is time to place the interior floortimbers and ribs in the hull. These should be made from naturally grown bent wood, as roots and branches. This gives them much greater strength and elasticity than if they were cut from straight logs. Designs from the 9th century may have lashed ribs below the waterline, while treenails with wedges are used to secure the ribs in designs from the 10th century and later. The wedges should be placed transversely on the inside of the rib, to prevent the rib from shattering. Apply tar proofing to the joing surfaces on both the ribs and the corresponding area of the strakes to prevent rotting. The foremost pair of rib tops can be extended into bollards on larger crafts as posts for mooring ropes. If mast should be present, the keelson and mast block (mast 'fish') is mounted along with the ribs. On large ships were the keelson may be a heavy and long structure, it is wise to fit the keelson when about 50% of the planks are clinkered, and before the crossbeams (the 'bitis') are fitted. After the ribs are fastened any remaining strakes are added and fastened to standing knees and futtocks that in turn rest on top of the crossbeams, secured with treenails. These upper strakes are never lashed, but secured with treenails, except for the top of the futtocks which are fastened with a rivet or a clenched nail. If oar holes are part of the design, make the oar holes with the oar blade slits before the strake is clinkered to the hull. The gunwale is reinforced with inwale and/or outwale if this is part of the design. Oarlocks are fastened along the gunwale, either with treenails or lashings (in older designs as Nydam). However, any craft have either oarlocks or oar ports exclusively, never a mix. The floor tiles/deck planking (norwegian 'tiljer') are made for each 'room' (section) of the boat. The tiles are loose in smaller crafts. The intermediate supporting rods can be removed. The boat is treated with a mix of pine tar and turpentine for proofing. Soaked cloths with turpentine causes high risk of self-ingnition, so take care and dispose all soaked cloths safely. The boat must be treated several times 'wet-in-wet' both inside and outside. The thwarts should not be proofed. The steering oar is made and mounted, with tiller. The rudder is secured with a sturdy withy willow or a hewser running through a rudder boss on the outside of the hull, and an adjustable band of skin, sometimes braided, at the gunwhale. The rudder willow is tied to the aft bulkhead. If the rudder is very large (tall, with a deep draught), this is better done after sea launch. Do this properly, as the rudder is a critical component. Make a spare rudder for longer voyages. Mast, yard, sail, ropes, anchor and oars are made independently of the hull. The oars fore and aft can preferably be made a little bit longer than the oars amidships. Mark each oar with numbers or symbols (perhaps some cool runes?) to keep track of which side and rowing station the oar belongs to. S for starboard and P for port side (or B for the 'back board') is a good and intuitive system. Sea launch and rigging Time for sea launch! Large boats for salty waters must first be primed below the water-line to prevent fouling and wood gnarling worms and molluscs. Remember also to plug the draining hole. The traditional way to launch a Viking ship is to haul it to the water by pulling it over logs that rest on the ground. This operation requires well coordination. A large ship can be difficult to launch and the operation can be dangerous. Clear command lines is vital. Wait until the weather is favourable, with little crosswinds at the launching point, and the tide is high. An empty hull is light and catches wind easily. You don't want to ruin the boat now! Expect the boat to leak a bit at first, sometimes a lot in the first couple of days. This is quite normal. But the hull will swell and the leak will decrease. If the boat shall carry sail, it is now time to rise the mast and tie all ropes in the standing rig, as stays and shrouds, into position. Shrouds and stay(s) should be made adjustable with certain curved wooden levers that are used to attach the ropes to short slings of rope. Any blocks in the rig are usually made without pulleys (wheels). Far from all Viking ships will benefit from a backstay, as sagging and hogging will induce a very high strain on a backstay. The rope that carries the yard and the sail; the halyard, must be very strong! Larger boats shall also have some ballast, consisting of stones with round edges. This is for safety reasons, because rounded stones easier will fall out of the hull of the ship capsizes. Exact ballasting is difficult to estimate, as it will vary with the number of crewmen and other cargo. A starting point is to ballast the craft to be level in calm water. For safety reasons don't forget life jackets for all onboard and preferrably have another boat as escorte during the initial sailing trials. Inspect all ropes and knots and choose a day with modest winds for the first trials. Hopefully the illustrations will ease your confusion a bit. Click images to enlarge: Splitting logs into strakes. The point is to avoid the marrow. Attaching the first strake to the keel Keel support arrangement Supporting the keel is absolutely essential to maintain symmetry in the keel when the strakes are added. Any errrors here can't be undone later. The diagram for splitting the logs into planks provides a challenge for boats builders who are forced to buy industrially sawn materials. Oak can be split radially, while pine permits tangentially split timbers, avoiding the pith in the center. Thus, it is possible to obtain wider planks of pine from a log of the same diameter. Splitting or sawing the logs? The shipbuilders in the Viking age (793 - 1066) used to split the logs by using axe and wedges along the centreline. The plank was then chopped into shape by using a broad adze, almost like it was a rough plane. This is illustrated in the Bayeux tapestry, and confirmed by investigating the strakes of archaelogical ship finds. From one log they usually only got two or four planks well suited for boat hull. This may look like a waist of resources to us, but the benefits are several: In this way they achieved to get planks where the radial pores from the marrow (no: margstråle) where in parallell with the plank, instead of pentetrating the plank. The axe dressing and hand planing also made finer cuts in the cell structure in the surface and made the planks smoother and more water resistant than saw planks. A third advantage was that the growth rings in the wood then got right-angled to the surface. Each strake then became stronger and more resistant to mechanical wear. The result was a stronger hull more resistant to leaks and wear. A guess from my side is that it is possible that the root end of each strake was deliberately placed towards the front end ot the ship. Then the wood fibres in the strake and the surface chop marks would reject the water flow, instead of leading water into the wood cells. Adzing against the wood fibres is difficult, but along it is easy. The root end is also stronger and more rigid than the top end and provides a better nail grip. This principle has been used in norse wooden skis for centuries and to some extent in wooden roof covering in Norway. It may very well have its parallell in norse shipbuilding. Much of this understanding of the mechanical properties in wood is lost with the introduction of modern saw mills. For most ship builders of today a viking ship project is a compromise between financial resources and to which extent one can follow the historic building techniques. In most projects the builder is restricted to selecting industrially sawed planks instead of splitting and adzing logs. This was the case for famous replicas like Saga Siglar and Gaia and others, even though the ship builders were well aware of the log splitting technique. But despite shortage of time and money the above principles can still be used to some degree. One should try to select planks at the store which are sawn in a similar pattern along the core-line. Choose planks with dense growth rings and few knots. The weaker pith itself should be avoided and planed away, first by machine but preferably finished by hand planing. Hence, if you have sawn planks, the quality can be improved by later planing with edged hand tools. Strake joints, or scarfs as the Vikings would have said Keel and stern scarfs 4,6 or more rivets may be needed in larger vessels Plank box for steaming strakes A steamed plank must be fitted before it cools. The strakes and the keel joints are done by slanting the overlapping ends. The nails then penetrate both ends, forming a strong joint. Remember the direction of the water when the boat is in use so water is not forced into the hull by the movement the boat. Such joints should ideally be avoided or at least be spread evenly along the hull. Two joints in two successive strakes must never be placed at the same rib. This will substantially weaken the hull at this point. Warning! The same goes for the keel if this is laminated. The Gokstad replica Ormen Friske built in 1949 had a laminated keel where the joints of each layer in the laminat were put way too close to the other joints, instead of being spread evenly along the keel. The result was a weak point in the keel close to the mast basis which turned out deadly when Ormen Friske hit a storm offshore in 1950. The ship broke apart and none of the 15 crewmen survived. The lesson is as simple as challenging: do not take any short cuts in the design and be critical when selecting the materials. Stiff planks can easier be bent into shape after steaming. Steaming can be done easily by an arrangement of boiling water in an oil barrel, leading the steam through a pipe into a hollow profile of planks. If possible the hull should be built of "green" timber fresh from the saw mill or kept moist until builiding is done. In some parts of western Norway the former boat builders used to soak the strakes or timer in salty water in the fjord. When sunk as deep as 200 m for a month or two the wood got penetrated by the salt in the cold water. When the wood later dried, the salt was left within as a natural proofing against rotting. ' Meginhufr ' - 'the Strong Strake' in Viking ships One of the strakes deserves to be mentioned in particular. Many of the excavated Viking ships feature a special design of the strake which is level with or just below the crossbeams, the so called 'meginhufr'. The name is Old Norse language, a compound of 'megin' and 'hufr', the first meaning 'large' or strong and the latter 'strake' or ship plank. Thus, the 'meginhufr' is the strong or sturdy strake, a construction element that absorbs and distribute the lateral forces from the waves and the crossbeams and at the same time makes up a longitudinal reinforcement that acts like a spring along the ship side, maintaining the flexibility of the hull. The meginhufr is thicker than the other strakes (about 50%), slightly narrower and often hewed into a rather intricate profile, like an L or an S with distinct edges. It is also made from a very long timber, 2 - 3 times longer, compared to standard strakes, as the ship builders have tried to make it as long as possible in one piece. The meginhufr is often seen in the early Viking ships, those with lashed ribs, and rarely in ships that dates to the 11th century or later. In later ships it has been replaced with long stringers, that are attached to the inside of a more ordinary strake. Obviously a simpler solution for the crafter, requiring less specialized skills and saves some of the raw materials, but possibly also resulting in a weaker hull. The meginhufr is often found in one of the plank tier from 7 to 12 counted from the keel, depending on the size of the vessel. In the Oseberg ship the meginhufr is the 10th strake, running some 13 m long without scarfs. Anyone who replicates a Viking ship after an actual design that originally had this special strake (on both sides), should try to replicate it as good as possible as it is a significant element in the hull. The Bayeux Tapestry Nordfjord færing 19th century. One mast and a square sail The viking ship had only one mast which could be taken down. The sail was square attached to a cross beam in top. In addtion the mast was supported by ropes from the top down to the stern and stem and to several places along the gunwhale. The crossbeam could pivot around the mast so that the ship could be sailed with wind from behind and from both sides. The main problem was to sail against the wind. It was possible to some degree, but could not sail as sharp as with a modern rig. The sail was made of woven wool or linen. The ropes were usually tar-proofed hemp. In more rare cases ropes were made from horse tails or even from walrus hide. Phoenician inspired rig? I believe that the scandinavians were strongly influenced by mediterranean rig designs when they started to put mast and sail on their ships. The transition from pure rowing ships to sailing ships probably took place in the 6h and 7th century. The Phoenicians used rig designs with one mast and a sqare sail some 2000 years earlier. Although the Phoenicians eventually disappeared, their rig design survived in Greek and Roman ship designs. Somehow the ideas of such rigs must have travelled to northern Europe. The Romans used sailing crafts when they expanded the Roman empire to include parts of England and travelled the large rivers in Central Europe. Roman coins have also been found as far north as Herjolfsey in Iceland, which may indicate that the Romans undertook long voages deep into Scandinavia long before the Viking age. But the Scandinavian ships remained largely rowing ships until the keel was strong enough to carry the strain from a sail between the 5th and 7th century. Perhaps the upright keel was developed in direct response to just meet these demands? The further development of the keel, mast base and rig then must have followed hand in hand. Carved picture stones from the 8th century from Gotland in Sweden shows several varieties of ships with rig. The height-width ratio of the sail should probably not be regarded as accurate in these images as they are very rough in design and limitated to the shape of the stone. But they all confirm the sqare shape of the sail. Some of these images also picture a lower yard in the bottom of the sail. The ships in the Bayeux tapestry do not have these lower yards. Instead they show problems with the sail collapsing in its lower part. These ships were built in Normandy by William the Conquerer, and may not be good examples of a viking rig design or the embroidery may be inaccurate in displaying correct rigs. This indicates that several rig designs existed side by side. Most (or all?) modern viking ship replicas have left out a lower yard, but sometimes include a lower beam for keeping the sail wide at the foremost lower corner while tacking or sailing downwind in modest winds. The rig of the Gokstad ship A major problem for maritime researchers and historians is that a viking ship with a complete rig has never been found. Some remains of ropes and parts of a sail was found in the Gokstad ship. The mast was cut or broken and some wooden beams belonging to the rig was found. But still the rig was incomplete, so one is left to some guessing to get the entire picture. The size of the sail and heigth of the mast is widely discussed ever since the Gokstad ship was excavated. The 1892 replica Viking had a square sail, but this was probably too tall. Later replicas have been equipped with a lower and broader sail. An old norwegian rule of thumb says that one should be able to lower the mast within the stern of the ship. In the case of the 24 m long Gokstad ship this limits the height to about 12 m. Later wooden boats from western and northern Norway are direct descendants of the viking ships, and are likely to have rigs and sails very much like the Vikings used. The sail and rig designs were usually slightly different in each geographich area and of course in size according to the size of the boat. But the square forms (quadratic, trapezioid or rectangular) were dominant into the latter part of the 19th century. Boats from western Norway usually had lower sails than in northern Norway, and some with trapeziod sails.From about 1880 triangular sails took over as the main design. This also changed the way the norse wooden boats could be sailed, and in many ways the sailing tradition of the vikings was broken. These are the key elements in norse shipbuilding as I see them, told in brief. Before you eventually go ahead building a boat, seek as much information as you can. Study finished boats in detail and listen to people who have done this before you (thus.. not me!). Take care selecting only good materials. Oak is what the vikings preferred, but pine is also fine. In northern parts of Norway spruce was used, as the climate there is to cold for growing pine in suitable dimensions. The sail can be sewn from Duradon if you are building on a budget, as most builders do. A sail of woven wool is historically much more correct, but will also rise the cost of a project by one half or even more. For further inspiration, see the rest of this site . The external profile of this vessel has been designed by Omega Architects, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department which developed the naval project, while their interiors have been created by Droulers Architecture, which has worked in close collaboration with the shipyard’s Interiors and Design Office.

The new megayacht, the first to be built by CRN on the new naval platform of 12.50 metres in width, is characterized by sleek, slender and sporty lines, which make the profile particularly streamlined. With 5 decks, M/Y CRN 132 73 m can host up to 12 guests in its six cabins, including the Owner Suite and Vip cabins, together with a crew of 22 members.

The construction of this new jewel of the sea, which includes the best design solutions realized by CRN, has required around 430,000 hours of work from the shipyard workers and subcontractors and the daily contribution of over 150 direct and indirect workers.

YALLA hit the water in 2014 at the CRN shipyard in Ancona. She was built under the shipyard build number CRN 132 is a luxurious 73-metre displacement vessel. Her main characteristics include sleek, slender and sporty exterior lines by Omega Architects, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department. Spreading over four spacious and magnificent decks, the this 73-metre vessel offers accommodation for up to 12 guests in six deluxe staterooms overnight, including the sumptuous Owner Suite and Vip staterooms. There is also accommodation for a numerous and highly trained crew of 22 members, taking care of guests every need with exceptional attention to detail and guests on board.

YALLA Specifications

YALLA was designed with numerous exceptional design solutions to promote on board entertainment, social life and relaxation. One of the main features must be the onboard wellness situated on the lower deck, that includes a beach club, large swimming pool as well as a well-equipped fitness area.

Made of steel and aluminium, YALLA is fitter with twin Caterpillar 3512B diesel engines. She is ABS classed and MCA compliant.

Accommodation is spread over six beautifully appointed staterooms, including one spacious deluxe owner accommodation. All staterooms over private en suite bathroom facilities and best quality furnishings and amenities.

Off the Hook Yachts Acquires 300-Slip Marina in Georgetown Maryland  

The Acquisition 

Off the Hook Yachts is proud to announce the acquisition of Georgetown Yacht Basin (GYB) now rebranding under Georgetown Yacht Haven – a 300-boat slip full-service marina located on the Sassafras River in Georgetown, MD.  Off the Hook plans to restore the yacht basin to its former glory and reconnect with the local community in order to establish it as a household name in the area. 

As our founder is originally from Maryland, this will complement our current presence in the area, along with our MD sales team, which currently operates out of Bay Bridge Marina. The acquisition of the marina will allow us to expand on sales, service, and custom-built Nor-Tech Performance Boat sales in the region. Georgetown Yacht Haven has 300 slips, two paint sheds that can hold up to a 110-foot yacht, a 110-ton travel lift, a fuel dock, a swimming pool, bathhouses, and a complete ship store, along with many other amenities. GYH controls the largest travel lift in Northern Chesapeake Bay.

Performance & Range

Cocoa Bean is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 14 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 15 knots with a range of up to 6,000 nautical miles from her 242,266 litre fuel tanks at 13 knots. An advanced stabilisation system on board reduces the side-to-side roll of the yacht and promises guests exceptional comfort levels at anchor or when underway.

Cocoa Bean knows a thing or two about fun on the water, with a selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to enjoy whilst on charter. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. Also there are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. Additionally, there are two kayaks - a tranquil and relaxing way to pass the time. If that isn't enough Cocoa Bean also features scuba diving equipment, inflatable water toys, paddleboards and snorkelling equipment. Cocoa Bean features two tenders, but leading the pack is a 7.62m/25' Chapman RIB to transport you in style.

Cocoa Bean is available upon request for charter this winter. She is already accepting bookings this summer for cruising in the Mediterranean.

73m superyacht Yalla launched by CRN

Italian yacht builder CRN has launched its 73m superyacht Yalla .

CRN welcomed more than 1,000 guests to the launching ceremony of CRN 132 Yalla , held late this morning at its shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The launch ceremony included speeches from Alberto Galassi, new CEO of the Ferretti Group , Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN, Xinyu Xu, Vice-chairman of Weichai Group, and the Mayor of Ancona Valeria Mancinelli.

Part of the Ferretti Group,  CRN  specialises in custom yachts up to 90 metres in steel and aluminium. Yalla is the first yacht built by CRN on its new 12.5m beam platform. More than 430,000 hours from CRN and its subcontractors were spent on Yalla 's build, with contributions from 150 employees.

Exterior styling comes from Omega Architects in The Netherlands, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department. The five-deck motor yacht features sleek, sporty lines and a streamlined profile. Superyacht Yalla 's interiors are by Droulers Architecture, working with CRN's Interiors and Design Office. She hosts up to 12 guests in its six cabins, including an owner's suite and VIP cabins, along with 22 crew members.

'Following the launch of CRN 133 61m superyacht a few months ago, we are proud to celebrate the launch of the new Yalla of 73m, which represents a challenge and an objective for the whole CRN shipyard,' says Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN. ' Yalla will mark another important result for the development of CRN in the world. A sincere thanks for the trust of the owner and for the work of all employees and subcontractors who have worked on the project, to the architects Franck Laupman of Omega Architects and to Droulers Architecture. I also thank our shareholder Weichai Group and the new CEO of the Group Alberto Galassi for their participation in this important event for CRN and for the whole Ferretti Group.'

The Ferretti Group currently has five superyachts underway at the Ancona shipyard, including the 74m CRN 131, 55m CRN 134, a Ferretti Custom Line CL 124, the 61m CRN 133 and the Riva 122 Mythos , which are at the delivery stage.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Option 1: Use PDF presentation mode.

If you use PDF presentation mode, you won’t have to convert your PDF and worry about formatting issues. You will also have preference options as you learn how to put a PDF in presentation mode. Follow these steps:

• Open your PDF in Adobe Acrobat .
• Select File > Preferences > Full Screen View to select options for your presentation.
• Select View > Full Screen.

Defining initial view as Full Screen mode

Full Screen mode is a property that you can set for PDFs used for presentations. In Full Screen mode, PDF pages fill the entire screen, and the Acrobat menu bar, toolbar, and window controls are hidden. You can also set other opening views, so that your documents or collections of documents open to a consistent view. In either case, you can add page transitions to enhance the visual effect as the viewer pages through the document.

To control how you navigate a PDF (for example, advancing pages automatically), use the options in the Full Screen panel of the Preferences dialog box. These preferences are specific to a system—not a PDF document—and affect all PDFs that you open on that system. Therefore, if you set up your presentation on a system you control, you can control these preferences.

Define an initial view

When a user opens your PDF document or PDF Portfolio , they see the initial view of the PDF. You can set the initial view to the magnification level, page, and page layout that you want. If your PDF is a presentation, you can set the initial view to Full Screen mode. In Acrobat Pro you can create Action Wizards to change default settings for multiple documents.

After you define the initial view of the PDF, you can add page transitions to selected pages or the entire document.

Acrobat supports page transitions and bullet fly-ins from PowerPoint.

Define the initial view

• Choose File > Properties.
• In the Document Properties dialog box, click Initial View.

Select the options that you want, and then select OK. Save and reopen the file to see the effects.

Define the initial view as Full Screen mode

When setting the initial view of a PDF to Full Screen mode, you must define how the document opens.

• Choose File > Properties.
• In the Document Properties dialog box, select Initial View.

Choose Page Only from the Navigation Tab menu.

Choose Single Page from the Page Layout menu.

Set Open To Page to the page on which you want to start the presentation.

Users can exit Full Screen mode by pressing Esc if their preferences are set this way. However, in Full Screen mode, users cannot apply commands and select tools unless they know the keyboard shortcuts. You may want to set up page actions in the document to provide this functionality.

Initial View options for document properties

The Initial View options in the Document Properties are organized into three areas: Layout And Magnification , Window Options, and User Interface Options .

Layout And Magnification

Determines the appearance of the document.

Two conditions can affect page layout and magnification. 1) Someone has already set an individual PDF to a different initial view in File > Properties. 2) You have the option Restore Last View Settings When Reopening Documents selected in Edit > Preferences > Document category.

Navigation Tab

Determines which panels are displayed in the navigation pane.

Page Layout

Determines how document pages are arranged.

Magnification

Sets the zoom level for the document after it's opened. Default uses the magnification set by the user.

Open To Page

Specifies the page that appears when the document opens.

Setting Default for the Magnification and Page Layout options uses the individual users’ settings in the Page Display preferences.

Window Options

Determine how the window adjusts in the screen area when a user opens the document. These options apply to the document window itself in relationship to the screen area of the user’s monitor.

Resize Window To Initial Page

Adjusts the document window to fit snugly around the opening page, according to the options that you selected under Document Options.

Center Window On Screen

Positions the window in the center of the screen area.

Open In Full Screen Mode

Maximizes the document window and displays the document without the menu bar, toolbar, or window controls.

Show File Name

Shows the filename in the title bar of the window.

Show Document Title

Shows the document title in the title bar of the window. The document title is obtained from the Description panel of the Document Properties dialog box.

User Interface Options

Determine which parts of the interface—the menu bar, the toolbars, and the window controls—are hidden.

 If you hide the menu bar and toolbars, users cannot apply commands and select tools unless they know the keyboard shortcuts. You may want to set up page actions that temporarily hide interface controls while the page is in view. (See Add actions with page thumbnails .)

Add page transitions

You can create an interesting effect that occurs each time a page advances by using page transitions.

You can also set page transitions for a group of documents using the Actions wizard in Acrobat Pro .

Choose Tools > Organize Pages > More > Page Transitions.

In the Set Transitions dialog, choose a transition effect from the Transition menu. These transition effects are the same as effects set in the Full Screen preferences.

• Choose the direction in which the transition effect occurs. Available options depend on the transition.
• Choose the speed of the transition effect.
• Select Auto Flip, and enter the number of seconds between automatic page turning. If you do not select this option, the user turns pages using keyboard commands or the mouse.

Select the Page Range that you want to apply transitions to.

If users select Ignore All Transitions in the Full Screen preferences, they do not see the page transitions.

How to Use Full Screen Mode in Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader (PC & Mac)

First, we are going to turn on Full Screen mode for an open PDF (Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader). Then, we are going to set a PDF to open directly in Full Screen mode starting at a specific page number (Adobe Acrobat only).

The images below are from Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. These steps also apply to Adobe Acrobat 2020 and Adobe Acrobat 2017. In addition, the process is the same for PC and Mac.

• Select the View menu.

• Select Full Screen Mode from the drop-down menu.

Your PDF should open in Full Screen mode immediately.

You can use your mouse, trackpad, or the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate through the pages.

Here are some additional keyboard shortcuts:

• Zoom In: Ctrl + = (PC) Command + = (Mac)
• Zoom Out: Ctrl + – (PC) Command + – (Mac)
• Exit: Esc or Ctrl + L (PC) or Command + L (Mac)

If you are giving a presentation, you may want to open your PDF directly in Full Screen mode.

• Select the File menu.

• Select Properties from the drop-down menu.

• Select the Initial View tab in the Document Properties dialog box.

• (Optional) Enter the page number you want to start with in the Open to page text box. (The default is to open to the first page.)

• Select the Open in Full Screen mode option.

• Select the OK button.

• Save and reopen the PDF.
• When the PDF reopens, select Remember my choice for this document in the Full Screen alert box.

• Select the Yes button.

The PDF will open in Full Screen mode.

When you reopen the PDF later, it should open directly in Full Screen mode without showing the alert box. Therefore, you can give your presentation without the audience seeing the Acrobat interface.

How To Present a PDF Like a PowerPoint

Learn to present a PDF in full-screen mode like you would a PPT file or convert it to PPT for easy presenting.

You can present a PDF as if it were a PowerPoint presentation in two ways. You can either open a PDF and view the content in full screen or save the file as a PowerPoint. If you choose the latter, you can then open the file in Microsoft PowerPoint and present it as you usually would. Check out the full instructions for both methods below.

How To Present a PDF Like a PowerPoint Presentation

Open your pdf document with your pdf reader., click “view” and choose “enter full screen” or “slideshow.”, present as you usually would and navigate using the arrow keys., press the “esc” (escape) key to exit the slideshow when finished..

There are a few limitations to presenting PDF files like this: some media file types, such as animated GIF images, won’t work and will remain static in your presentation. You also can’t add speaker notes to PDF presentations. While we believe PDF is quite versatile, in this case, it might be better to convert the PDF to PPT format using our free converter.

How To Change a PDF to PPT To Present

• Go to the  PDF to PPT  converter.
• Drag and drop your PDF.
• Wait for the tool to convert it to PPT.

How to Open a PDF in Full Screen Mode Using Adobe Acrobat on Windows 11

While exchanging documents and forms, many prefer to convert those files to PDFs. Today, smartphones and computers can open the most popular files without a hassle. However, when viewing a PDF file entirely, you’ll need to pay attention to its details. Scrolling sideways isn’t fun to view a PDF.

Adobe Acrobat lets you view a PDF file in full screen mode. That’s helpful whether you have a large external monitor or viewing it on your humble laptop. Here’s how to open a PDF in full screen mode using Adobe Acrobat on your Windows 11 computer. Note that these solutions work on Windows 10 as well.

How to Manually Open a PDF in Full Screen Mode Using Adobe Acrobat

To ensure the audience can view the contents of a presentation, most PPTs are displayed in full-screen mode. With the click of a button, the content of the PPT covers the entire screen of a PC or projector. You can do the same with a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. Here’s how:

Step 1: Click the Start button and type Acrobat to look for it in the Windows Search.

Step 2: From the results, click on the Acrobat app to open it.

Step 3: In the top-left corner, click on the File tab.

Step 4:  From the File menu, click Open to launch File Explorer (Windows Explorer).

Step 5:  From File Explorer, navigate to the location of the PDF you would like to view in full-screen mode.

Step 6:  Click the PDF and select Open to view it in the Adobe app.

Step 7: When the PDF, click the View tab on the Ribbon at the top.

Step 8:  From the View menu, click Full Screen Mode.

The PDF will cover your PC’s screen like a PowerPoint Presentation. The steps above work for Adobe Acrobat DC, and Adobe Acrobat Reader apps.

How to Automatically Open a PDF in Full Screen Mode Using Adobe Acrobat

If you would like your PDFs shown in full screen mode without you having to press any button, you’ll need to set up your Adobe to do so. After applying the setting, your PDFs should not require your interference to display in full screen. However, this option is only available with an Adobe Acrobat Pro DC subscription.

Step 1: Click the Start button and type Acrobat to search for the app.

Step 3:  On the Ribbon of the Adobe app, click on the File tab.

Step 7:  After opening the PDF, on the Adobe Ribbon, click the File tab.

Step 8: From the File menu, click Properties to view Adobe Settings.

Step 9 :  Click Initial View on the Document Properties window.

Step 10: Under the Window Options group, tick the box beside Open in Full Screen mode.

Step 11: Click OK at the bottom of the Document Properties window to save your new change.

Step 12: Click the Save button on Adobe and close the PDF.

Step 13:  Reopen the PDF and you should see a pop-up.

Step 14: Tick the box beside the pop-up asking you to confirm if you would like the document to open in Full screen.

Step 15: Click Yes to save your selection and the document should open in Full Screen.

Anytime you open the document in the future, it will be done in full screen mode. If you would like to leave the full screen mode display, simply press the Esc key on your keyboard.

Adobe Reader – How to loop PDF as a presentation

The following steps show how to use Adobe Reader to make a PDF document display like a power point presentation – full screen and automatically progressing through pages.

These instructions are written for Adobe Reader DC on Windows 10, but will be similar for other versions.

• Open the PDF document in Adobe Reader DC
• Select the ‘Edit’ menu then ‘Preferences’

• Under the left hand menu select ‘Full Screen’
• To loop the presentation place a tick next to ‘Loop after last page’
• To progress through each page automatically place a tick next to ‘Advance every’ (and optionally set a different amount in seconds)

• Click ‘OK’ to save the changes
• To display the PDF as a presentation now select the ‘View’ menu and select ‘Full Screen Mode’

How to Present a PDF like a PowerPoint

With Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can present a regular PDF in similar fashion to a PowerPoint presentation.

Format presentation

• Under the "Edit" tab, click "Preferences".
• Under the "Full Screen Navigation" Section, you can loop the presentation by checking the "Loop after last page" option.
• You can also set the "speed" of the presentation with the "Advance every [ ] seconds" option.
• It is recommended to leave the "Escape key exits" option checked in order to quit the presentation early.

Present PDF

• Under the "View" tab, click "Full Screen Mode". This will start the presentation.
• In order to end the presentation before it's finished, press Esc .

You can easily create great-looking presentations with CorelDRAW by exporting your document as a full screen PDF. You make your presentation stand out by creating eye-catching master pages, using charts to get your message across, and adding navigational buttons. For best results, start with a new document with a landscape orientation.

You can make change an open document’s orientation by clicking the  Landscape  button on the property bar.

The size of the document doesn’t matter, as the end result, the full screen PDF, will fit to the screen.

Creating the master page

Now, you’ll create a master page, which contains all the design elements — such as backgrounds, logos or titles —  that will be shown on all pages.

1. Click  Window > Dockers > Object Manager.  The Object Manager docker opens at the right side of the screen.

2. In the Object Manager, right-click  Master Page , and click  New Master Layer  (all pages).

3. Rename this layer  General , and a new layer,  General (all pages),  is created.

4. Next, import an image for the background by clicking  Window > Dockers > Connect , and dragging the desired image or clipart onto the page.

5. Scale the image to fit the page by dragging the midpoints on the top and side of the image.

Regardless what image you chose for the background, it will likely interfere with text and other messages. To make the text and messages stand out, you should create some information boxes.

6. To insert the information boxes, create two rectangles as shown below by using the Rectangle tool from the toolbox.

7. To round the corners of the rectangles, select the rectangle, and then choose the Shape tool from the toolbox.

8. The rectangle has four anchor points, one in each corner. When you drag one of these points, you can round the corners. Notice that the property bar is context-sensitive, so it displays controls directly related to what you’re doing.

To the right of these fields, there’s’ a lock icon. When you disable this lock, you can round the corners separately.

9. Now, fill the rectangles using the  Fill  tool in the toolbox with 50% gray, which is works well for white text.

10. Next, create a black area at the top of the rectangles that will contain text, by drawing a horizontal line using the  Bezier  tool.

11. Click the  Smart Fill  tool, select black, and fill the area.

12. The rectangle to the left will be used as a navigational area, and the one to the right will be used for the actual information. You might want to draw a darker grey line to separate a headline of text from the sub-information using the  Bezier  tool.

You can draw a perfectly horizontal line by pressing the Ctrl key and clicking the start and endpoint of the line.

13. You can change the thickness of the line on the property bar by selecting the line with the Pick tool. You can change the line color simply by right- clicking a color in the Color palette.

Now you can put a company logo into the top-right frame by clicking File > Import, browsing your computer to find the logo, and clicking the  Import  button in the Import dialog box.

Insert header text using the  Text  tool to complete the master page:

Now you have the master content, which will be consistent throughout all pages.

Feel free to experiment with the different information containers. The previous image shows another example, in which the left bottom frame will contain navigational buttons.

Now you can start to work on the content of the individual pages. To switch from the Master page to the individual pages, double-click the page icons:

Creating pie charts

On this page, you will draw a pie chart of five pieces.

• Draw a circle with the  Ellipse  tool, and fill it with a light orange color.
• Copy the circle, and paste it 4 times.
• Select the top circle, and select the  Shape  tool.

The outline of the circle will appear with a dotted line and an anchor point at the top of the circle. When you drag this anchor point counter clockwise, you create pie slices by dragging inside the circle, and line-segments, when you drag outside the circle.

• Drag the anchor point to an angle 36 degrees to create the first pie slice.

• Darken the orange color by pressing  Ctrl  and clicking black in the Color palette once or twice. For every click, you add 10% of black to the orange color.
• Repeat the steps with the other circles, making the slices bigger and darker in colour as you go along.
• Add some white text next to the slices.

Creating flow charts

Flow charts are another way to communicate complex information. CorelDRAW has many ready-made symbols designed specifically for flow charts. And you can connect the symbols with lines that snap to the symbols. When you rearrange the symbols in the chart, the lines will automatically follow the symbols.

In the toolbox, you will find the  Basic Shapes  flyout.

This flyout contains many tools for adding a variety of ready-made to your drawing, including the  Flowchart Shapes  tool. When you click any of these tools, you can click the  Perfect Shapes  button on the property bar to access the available shapes.

To add a shape, just select it, and and click the in your drawing. You can enhance a shape by adding a shadow using the  Drop Shadow  tool from the  Interactive Tools  flyout

• Using the Drop Shadow tool, click the shape that you want to apply the shadow to.
• Drag from the center or side of the object until the drop shadow is the size you want.

To add finishing touches to the flowchart, you can add connector lines between shapes. You can customize connector lines by modifying their thickness and adding arrowheads.

The Connector Tools flyout offers tools for creating a variety of connector lines, such as straight, right-angled, and more.

Creating interactive navigational buttons

You might have noticed navigational buttons in the bottom left box in the sample image. These are a series of triangles that offer document navigation opitons.

You can make any shape in your drawing interactive by right-clicking it and clicking  Internet Links,  which provides a list of the pages in your document. Just select the appropriate page for your button.

Publishing your presentation as a full screen PDF

Finally, it’s time to publish your document as a full-screen PDF.

Click  File > Publish To PDF.

In the  Publish To PDF  dialog box, click the Settings button.

In the  PDF Settings  dialog box, click the  Document  tab, and enable the  Full Screen  and  Include   hyperlinks , and click the  OK  button.

When you open the PDF, it opens in full screen.

Way 1: View PDF in Full Screen with SwifDoo PDF

How to change pdf to make it open full screen?

I have some scripts that auto-generate pdf files (some use ImageMagick convert ). They are meant to be viewed full screen ('presentation mode'), which is easy to do manually with some visualization programs (Okular for instance, but I was unable to do that on a Mac yesterday).

Since pdf have an internal option to open full screen (OpenAction), I'd like to set it, either at creation time with convert , or with an additional command. Any idea how to do that ?

Full Screen Mode Introduction

PDF Annotator's Full Screen Mode is an excellent way to display your presentation to an audience, from a small conference room meeting to an auditorium presentation full of people.

Full Screen Mode gives you a clean, easy to navigate presentation screen, and yet still enables access to important annotation and markup tools.

Opening Full Screen Mode

To get into Full Screen Mode, click the Full Screen button on the toolbar, as shown in the screen shot below, or press Ctrl+L .

Opening and Navigating Documents

Once you entered Full Screen Mode, PDF Annotator will stretch over your complete screen.

You will find a special PDF Annotator toolbar on the left, the Full Screen Toolbar .

The upper most button containing the red PDF Annotator logo gives you access to the Full Screen Menu . If you already had a file open when you switched into Full Screen Mode, that document will be displayed. Otherwise, the Full Screen Menu will automatically pop up.

On the Full Screen Menu , there are options to create a New Document , to Open an existing file, or to select one of your Recently Used Documents from the list on the right.

Let's go ahead and open a PDF presentation that we have prepared, and that we want to mark up and present using PDF Annotator.

Once you opened the PDF presentation, it will display expanding to the full screen size.

You can now use the scroll bar on the right to navigate through the document, or the Arrow buttons on the bottom part of the toolbar to page up and page down .

The button between the arrow buttons displays the current page number .

Tool Buttons

Looking at the upper half of the toolbar you can see a range of tool buttons .

Click the red pen tool button to switch to the red pen, and try adding some markup to your document.

This way you can live markup the document in front of your audience, point out important parts on a slide, or fill in details, additional information, or new content!

Let's switch to another tool, like the magenta marker tool to point out something important on the PDF slide.

Maybe you want to use a different color?

You can quickly change the properties of the currently selected tool by clicking the active tool button one more time !

This will open the properties popup , where you can select from a range of pen widths , colors and more tool properties . The number of properties available depends on the kind of tool selected (i.e. pen, marker, text, stamp, ...).

Clicking the Favorites icon (the heart symbol) on the popup will switch to the tool favorites defined in the Toolbox in regular mode. Clicking the gear icon will take you back to the properties.

Click the tool button again, or click anywhere out of the properties popup to close the popup and start annotating with the newly configured tool.

Saving Your Work

You can always save your changes to your document by clicking the Save button on the Full Screen Toolbar, which is the second button from the top (the first one after the Menu button).

View Options

PDF Annotator knows four different Page Layouts when displaying documents:

• One Page - Continuous
• Two Pages - Continuous

If you want to learn more about page layouts, please refer to our article on Page Layouts .

In the screen shots above, PDF Annotator was set to display one page at a time. Scrolling down always switched completely to the next page, you never see two pages at the same time.

If you do want to see two pages at the same time, like the bottom part of the current page, and the top of the next page, you can switch from One Page layout to One Page - Continuous layout.

To switch between page layouts, click the Zoom button on the Full Screen Toolbar.

There you find a row of four buttons representing the four Page Layout options available.

Please note that you can also switch to the Zoom tool, or switch to Fit to Width or Fit to Size mode within this popup menu.

Switch to One Page - Continuous to see the new page layout. You can now see the bottom of the current page, and the top of the next page at the same time.

You can still use the Page up and Page down buttons to navigate.

To get an overview of all the pages in your document, click the Page Number button between the arrow buttons.

This will open a sidebar showing small previews of all the pages in your document ( page thumbnails ).

You can click a page thumbnail to jump to that page.

Additional commands are available by right clicking on a page thumbnail.

If your document contains Bookmarks , you can switch to the bookmarks view by clicking the bookmarks icon on the top.

Clicking a bookmark jumps to the appropriate position in the document.

To close this sidebar again, just click the page number button once again, or click the Close button ( X ) on the top right of the sidebar.

Full Screen Settings

You probably already noticed the Settings button on the bottom of the Full Screen Toolbar, the button with the gear icon.

Let's first right click the Settings button to reveal another popup menu.

On this right-click popup, you can find commands to Reset , Save and Load the Full Screen configuration. We will not handle these options in this article in more detail, but in the next steps, we will customize the buttons in the Full Screen Toolbar, and using these commands here, you can reset all customizations to the factory settings, or save your Full Screen Toolbar settings (as a backup, to share them with a co-worker, or to move them to another device). The Load command will load the customizations you previously saved.

We will look at the first item on this menu, Customize , in a moment.

But for now, let's click the Settings... button.

The Settings button opens PDF Annotator's well known Settings window.

Here you can customize the appearance of the Full Screen Toolbar. In general, we recommend to stay with the defaults here, unless you have a good reason to change something. In our example, though, we want to switch the Button size to a smaller one.

The reason is, that for better visibility, we have set our demo computer to a very small screen resolution. This results in the buttons on the Full Screen Toolbar being really huge, probably way bigger than on your own screen.

So, we're going to decrease their size here a little bit - but you don't essentially have to do the same . In fact, we would only recommend decreasing the button size if your screen resolution is as small as ours, and the buttons appear as huge as in the screen shots above.

After closing the Settings window with OK , we're back in Full Screen Mode.

Action Buttons

Let's work up through the buttons in the lower part of the Full Screen Toolbar, and click the Expand button above the Zoom button.

The Expand button brings up a line of additional buttons, called Action Buttons .

Contrary to the Tool Buttons in the upper half of the toolbar, Action Buttons don't hold tools, but commands or options.

For example, from top to bottom in the screen shot above, we have:

• The Draw with Finger option, which toggles the ability to draw with the finger instead of panning with the finger (this option is only availabe on touch enabled devices).
• The Select Tool to select annotations added using any annotation tool. This can also be used as a pointer , that can be seen by the audience way better than, for example, the tip of the pen tool.
• The Eraser Tool to erase annotations.
• The Pan Tool to navigate on the page.
• The Undo Command to undo the last step.

If this list of Action Buttons does not yet hold the options you need most, no worries! We will now show you how to customize these buttons.

Full Screen Customization

In order to change the Tool Buttons and Action Buttons behaviour, we need to switch PDF Annotator into Customization Mode .

To switch into Customization Mode , do a regular left click on the Settings button on the bottom left (the gear icon).

As you noticed, this changed the color of all Tool Buttons and Action Buttons .

These are the buttons that can be customized.

The Tool Buttons can be identified by their blue frames.

The Action Buttons now have orange frames.

You can click any of the Tool Buttons to bring up the Edit Tool window.

Here you can change the type of the tool ( Pen, Marker, Text, Stamp, Graphical Object ) by clicking the tabs on top of the Edit Tool window.

Within the window, you can find various options to set up your tools.

You can also click any of the Action Buttons to bring up the Customize Command window.

In the Customize Command window, you can select any command from the list, to associate the Action Button with the selected command.

To find a command on this long list, either scroll through the sections on the list, or enter any keyword into the Find command... search box on the top.

Did you also notice the set of buttons on the bottom of both the Edit Tool and Customize Command windows?

These buttons can be used to move the currently selected Tool or Action Button up or down , or to remove the button . Removing the button will not physically removed it, but the button will not be associated with any tool or command any more, and will stay empty and invisible once you exit Customization Mode. Please note that you cannot merge Tool and Action Buttons. The general setup and maximum numbers of buttons is fixed.

The fourth button is Undo , which will reset your last change on the currently selected button.

Once you're done customizing, click the Settings button again, and see the toolbar getting back to its normal colors, displaying all your changes.

Exiting Full Screen Mode

The last thing to show you in regards to PDF Annotator's Full Screen Mode is how to exit it:

Either press the ESC key on your keyboard, or click the Menu button on the toolbar, and select Exit Full Screen .

How do I use the full screen mode?

Using Full Screen

Basic usage.

Enter Fullscreen by pressing F11

Navigating the document is easy. Users can make use of the mouse wheel, keyboards, and Left click/Right click. Left click goes one page further into the document, right click goes back one page. 

Leave full screen mode by pressing Esc or F11

Changing Preferences

When not in full screen mode, you can adjust the settings on the File tab, by clicking Preferences ( Ctrl+K ), and navigating to the Full Screen category.

General  

When document request full screen mode : The option to allow , Deny , or Ask User Before are provided. These come into effect when a document has a script that automatically wants to open in full screen. Which monitor to use: In instances where more than one monitor is being used with a given computer, you may choose to always have full screen on any particular screen. Current, Tallest, Widest, biggest and primary are automatically pulled from the system's current information.   Stay awake:   When this option is ticked, the screensaver will not activate and the computer will not go to sleep/hibernate.

Page Navigation

Exit by pressing 'Esc' Specifies if pressing Esc key leaves full screen mode to return to regular desktop mode. 

Show pages Navigation Bar: This helps to navigate the document from buttons on the bottom corner, as well as change the Page layout.

Loop After last page: When navigating thought the pages of the document, the editor will revert to the first page when this option is selected and the last pages is passed. 

Automatically go to next page after___: This is for passive presentation. The Editor automatically goes to the next page after the time specified.

Background color: When " use solid background " is specified, you can choose the color that is used for the background in full screen mode. 

Mouse Cursor : You can set to have the mouse disappear after 5 seconds  ( Hide after delay ), never disappear ( always visible ), or never appear( always hidden )

Page Transition

Changing the default transitions defines the way the document shows navigation from one page to the next.

Hi thank you for the reply, but the tool menu bar at the top is always visible. I don't know how to hide it for a real full screen

The native Files App has a built-in PDF viewer - that will fill the iPad screen.

If, however, you are attempting to fit an entire PDF page to the iPad screen, you may find that the scaled-image is too small to read.

Depends on the app and depends on whether a full screen feature is implemented within the app or a zoom feature to get the PDF to fill the iPad's screen.

To hide the thumbnail bar at the right of the screen, just tap the screen. The toolbar at the top the screen, only visible when at the top of the page, similarly hides along with the thumbnail bar.

Whilst Markup is active, as shown in your screenshot, you’ll not be able the hide the top menu. Otherwise, just tap the screen to hide the toolbar when reading a PDF file from within the Files App.

I discovered later that the in-built PDF viewer will scale the file to fill the screen. But when using a pencil the colorpad blocks a bit on where u place (bottom/top).
