Cruisers 500

  • By Michael Verdon
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

Cruisers Yachts’ new 500 Express comes from Oconto. That’s not a village in Italy, but a town in Wisconsin, where boats have been built for 50 years. The sleek, curvaceous 500 is a gauge of how important European styling has become in the world of yachting. It also lifts express cruisers into the realm of motoryachts with one innovative feature: Six vertical portholes that turn the master state into a room with a view. But more about that later.

The 500 was launched this year to fill the gap in the Cruisers’ line between the 440 and 540 Express. Sitting at the dock at Liberty Landing Marina in New Jersey, however, it looked like a smartly dressed cousin that had just arrived from Italy. The navy blue topsides and wing-tip hardtop add a heightened sense of style to the profile, and the 52-foot, 3-inch LOA and 15-foot, 6-inch beam dwarfed the other cruisers around it. The 500 looked at home with the New York City skyline as the backdrop.

But I discovered that the 500 is more than a nautical fashion statement during a run up the Hudson River to Albany. Jon Willman, who was delivering hull number one to Lake Erie with his brother, Dave, had graciously agreed to let me field-test the boat for the 125-mile trip.

Early-morning fog shrouded lower Manhattan as we cast off, but visibility on the water was clear. The Hudson was a tangle of “rush-hour commuter ferries, but you could feel the heft of the Cruisers’ 40,000-pound displacement as the twin 675-hp Volvo D12s pushed it through the chop. Willman soon had the 500 running at its top end of 34.6 knots, winding in and out of the traffic. Within ten minutes, we’d left the city in our wake, and the landscape settled into quiet suburbia.

One of my favorite cruising grounds is the Hudson. There are plenty of jokes about having to avoid New Jersey’s “deadheads-floating bodies-but there’s nowhere else in the country where you can have breakfast in Manhattan, tie up at West Point for lunch, and head into backcountry so beautiful that a school of painters named themselves after it.

We got a foretaste of the natural sights even before we passed under the George Washington Bridge, with the 500-foot Palisades cliffs standing on the western banks. Near the Tappan Zee Bridge (Native American for “cold spring and Dutch for “sea) the river spreads out for over two nautical miles. The hills and valleys of the area provided a backdrop for Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, though modern Tarrytown bears little resemblance to the village Rip Van Winkle made famous.

At Ossining, I could just make out the infamous towers of the Sing-Sing prison, and farther north around Haverstraw Bay the river widens even more to three nautical miles. I took the wheel from Jon, just as the sun came bursting through the clouds and the temperature jumped 15 degrees. The green hills around us were suddenly bathed in bright light, and we took off our fleece jackets in the enclosure of the hardtop, settling in for a long run.

A few hours at the helm can feel like jury duty on some boats. But the 500 was downright fun to drive. The tabs keep bow rise to a minimum coming on plane-a real plus, if you’re used to moonshot-style takeoffs. The V-shape hull, with 15 degrees of deadrise at the transom, was nimble and responsive. It was almost like being at the helm of a sport boat. Instead of man-handling the wheel, I let the hydraulically assisted steering and electronic throttle controls do the work. We did figure-eights in the channel in a tight radius, with instant rudder response.

The smooth ride can be a bit deceptive, however. It doesn’t feel like you’re running 34 knots-until the channel markers look like they’re sprinting to meet you. But the helm seat and footrest make it comfortable to drive, combined with easy-read gauges, and decent visibility from the helm. Although Cruisers outfitted this show boat with electronics-Raymarine radar, GPS/plotter, VHF, sonar, autopilot, and KVH TracVision-it lets its dealers install electronics. (Electronics are not included in our price as tested.)

The best thing about an extended cruise/test is that you have time to get a sense of a boat, its highs and lows. After a few hours, I asked Jon to take over and made my way around the cockpit. Overall impression: big sense of space (maximum headroom is 7 feet, 5 inches), natural light (a fixed Plexiglas hatch is integrated into the top) and extra points for multiple access points to the foredeck (16-inch-wide windshield walk-through as well as 9-inch side passages).

The U-shape cockpit lounge is probably the best example of the 500’s scale, measuring 46 inches across at the top, 93 inches down the center, and 62 inches across at the bottom. Ten feet of open space separates the lounge from the Force 10 electric grill. The grill’s an option, but the U-line refrigerator/icemaker is standard. Climate control is also easily attainable with multiple cooling and heating ducts that run fore and aft, so you can expand the boating season into fall with the heater, or crank up the air conditioning during the dog days. Really, the only thing that might seem small is the transom door-narrow at 19 inches.

While the cockpit gets strong marks, below-decks is where the 500 really shines. I’d spent the night before in the master stateroom, and woke with first light-light that I could see not from a small hatch overhead, but from the three oversized vertical portholes in the hull sides.

Take a look at the three windows in the running shot. They set the 500 apart from other express cruisers and help it compete with small motoryachts. I spent the second leg of the trip, from Kingston to Coeymans, on the innerspring mattress, staring out the window at the pastoral scenes of the river banks.

And who says you have to compromise space for speed? Like the cockpit, there’s an abundant feeling of space in the rest of the cabin. Both heads (the master is en suite) have 6-foot, 7-inch headroom, glass-enclosed shower stalls and high-tech Tecna toilets.

The heads are modular units that Cruisers builds separately and then attaches to the fiberglass liner in the cabin for easier installation. Hull lay-up includes woven-roving fiberglass, balsa coring, 22-mil. gelcoat, and catalyzed synthetic paint on the stringers that protects against fuel and other corrosive materials. Fit and finish in the cabin is strong, particularly the cherry woodwork and upholstery, which Cruisers does in-house. The curved cabinets and doors are evidence of the 500’s European styling.

In the saloon, the five-piece leather sectional has two incliners, entertainment center, beside the full-featured galley with fridge, optional Sharp Carousel microwave, Schatt stove and Fisher dishwasher. The forward stateroom comes in either a queen or twin berth layout. Hull number one had the queen berth, as well as some stowage space and access to the forward head. All three rooms had optional flat-screen TVs, and Surround-Sound is available for the saloon. A central vacuum system is standard.

Enjoying the river’s view from the master state, and later the helm, I could see where the Hudson River school of artists gained inspiration for their pre-Impressionist paintings. The banks, lined with forests and cows grazing on the hillsides, looked as pastoral as they must’ve been in the early 19th century. Except for an odd town, this stretch of the Hudson, north of Castleton-on-Hudson, showed few signs of civilization.

It was so peaceful that I was jarred back to reality when I saw Albany’s skyscrapers in the distance. Tugs and warehouses replaced the grassy banks, and dozens of small boats were elbowing for river space, fishing for striped bass. Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. A classic American cruise on a well-proportioned cruiser, with the best view on the water.

General Description

"No Tan Lines Too" is a very nicely updated example of the spacious Cruisers 500/520 Express. Called the 520 Express from 2006-2009, she does measure to this length and definitely has the feel of a 50 foot plus boat! Featuring a factory hardtop there is a tremendous amount of headroom both in the cockpit and down below. A full enclosure that has been updated and the cockpit air and heat (also upgraded) make the exterior enjoyable in all conditions and an electric grill cabinet, cockpit sink, refrigerator/freezer and cockpit TV make this a wonderful spot to entertain and relax in. The helm is full featured with Volvo engine displays, electronic controls and a bow thruster to make docking a breeze especially with the responsive Volvo D12 Inboards. A walkthrough windshield makes moving to the bow for line handling or sunbathing very comfortable and there is an upgraded custom sunpad with backrests. Down below there is a huge open salon and galley area with wrap around seating, dual incliners, upgraded smart TV, salon table with leaves, upscale galley with dual sinks, dishwasher, corian counters, and abundant storage. The owners cabin is mid ship and full beam with large hull side windows, a custom wine fridge, hanging locker and full head with stall shower. Privacy is afforded by having the guest cabin forward and this stateroom features another queen size bed and private head with stall shower.

The engine room is well laid out and again has great headroom. A generator in sound shield, glendinnning cablemaster, fuel polishing, oil exchange system, easy access to batteries and battery chargers, etc. make this a great space to work in and perform routine checks and maintenance.

"No Tan Lines Too" does come with a Brig RIB Tender with 20hp Honda Outboard which is conveniently launched with a fully hydraulic davit system.

Conveniently located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor just minutes off of I-95 and only 20-25 minutes away from Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport, this is a boat not to be missed!

Boat Test: 2023 Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS

  • By Chris Caldwell
  • August 22, 2023

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS running

After a day on the water testing the new Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS, I realized why it seemed so familiar. It reminded me of the Porsche 356 coupe I owned decades ago. It was fast, it was fun, it was comfortable, and everyone looked when I blew past. I loved that car dearly and still regret selling it.

GLS stands for Grand Luxury Sport and, as the flagship of the “adventuring” GLS series of Cruisers Yachts boats, the 50 is all that and more. This yacht is about fun and entertaining on the water. Once you get past using the words “Cruisers” and “ outboards ” in the same sentence, this is a quite spectacular yacht.

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS beached

Cruisers calls the 50 GLS “the ultimate dayboat,” which is accurate in one sense, but limiting in another. The 50 is great for entertaining a boatload of friends, but also doubles as a surprisingly luxe overnighter, with two staterooms and a spacious head with a separate stall shower.

For starters, the cockpit is spacious, and even more so when the sides butterfly down to a 21-foot beam, leaving the aft seating in an island of comfort with its own table. The transom grill (or optional two grills) is convenient to the cockpit and allows the chef to surreptitiously dispose of charred burgers overboard.

Set well behind the chef is a whacking-great trio of 600 hp Mercs that push this 19 tons of comfortableness to just shy of 50 knots (56 mph) with more than enough punch to yank skiers and tow toys right out of the water when you put the hammer down.

Interior and Accessories

Three separate seating areas dot the cockpit, with more than enough room to move about without banging knees, and then there is the bow seating. Press a button and the windshield slides open (no lifting required), offering a deep walkway (safe for all ages) to reach the trio of adjustable sun lounges (with armrests) on the cabin top. You won’t want to walk 15 feet to the twin Isotherm fridges in the aft cockpit, so a cooler is tucked under a seat with a chiller plate (no ice).

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS helm

Cruisers Yachts, now owned by MarineMax, created a good-looking yacht, from the black slash on the topsides that conceals the windows to the sleek hardtop that presents you with choices. Want sun and breeze? Open the sunroof and walkway door, plus lower the electric side windows. Hiding from the sun? A 9-foot MakeFast awning grows from the top to shade the aft cockpit.

The helm features a trio of 19-inch Simrad monitors (including CZone digital switching), a joystick linked to the Side-Power bow thruster, and a fully adjustable helm seat next to a double companion seat.

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS salon TV

Step below and the bright cabin is surprising, with 6 feet, 8 inches of headroom and a queen-size berth forward behind French doors. A mini galley holds a microwave for morning coffee and croissants, and an Isotherm fridge augments the two in the cockpit galley. The enclosed head is most civilized, with a Lucite-doored stall shower more than 4 feet wide.

A second cabin is tucked under the cockpit, with a pair of berths that convert to a queen berth—perfect for kid naps or guests, although it won’t encourage them to linger. Each cabin has 32-inch TVs, and a 55-inch TV pops up behind the cockpit galley.

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS berth

Before the 50 GLS was dropped into the water, I had a chance to examine the Donald L. Blount-designed hull with two full-length strakes and wide chine flats that threw the spray far to the side underway. It’s clear that Blount’s performance-boat background provided us with a soft ride through 2- to 3-foot seas, but more importantly, the 50 GLS begs you to exercise your secret Mr. Toad. Crank the wheel, and the twin-propped Merc V-12s bite like a Rottweiler. The 50 just grins, banks comfortably, and asks for more dog treats, please. Even Aunt Edna is going to love this ride.

And while you’d think that 36 cylinders hanging on the transom should make muscle-car noises, well, they don’t. At idle, we registered just 58 dB(A) on the decibel meter, and with the throttles down flat, we were at 85 dB(A), which OSHA says equates to the sound of a vacuum cleaner. There’s no “I didn’t hear you” excuse on the 50 GLS.

Hanging those outboards on the stern also opened immense undercockpit space, which had a Kohler 15 kW genset on our test boat (for keeping those blenders mixing margaritas and the AC going at the sandbar), plus a Seakeeper 6 gyrostabilizer. There was also ample storage for boat gear, from fenders to inflatable toys.

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS cockpit seating

The speed chart tells part of the story (56.6 mph), but not the real-life part. Think in terms of Lauderdale to Bimini in 60 minutes, Long Beach to Catalina in a half-hour, and the same from Cape Cod to Nantucket. Even better, this isn’t a pounding ride, but a comfortably luxurious adventure.

Shopping? Another $1 million gets you a Formula 500 SSC with four Merc 600s ($3,537,110), plus another 10 mph at wide-open throttle. Do compare and run both boats.

The Cruisers 50 GLS checks all the boxes. It is a bowrider on steroids, an express cruiser with entertaining ambitions, an overnighter in comfort, and a performance boat.

Like my long-gone Porsche, the 50 GLS is a classic for our own times, and one that should bring you as much fun as my little silver four-banger.

  • Folding cockpit “terraces” add flexibility and space at rest (but rails would be nice).
  • High coamings and grab rails everywhere are safe for kids.
  • Cockpit phone-charging station handles six phones, plus one by the skipper.
  • Galley “splash rail” won’t keep any spilled gazpacho from hitting the upholstery.
  • A handrail into the cabin would be appreciated.
  • White dashboard creates huge reflections in windshield. Buy black felt!

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

cruisers yachts 500

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

cruisers yachts 500

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

Russia says flagship missile cruiser has sunk after explosion off coast of Ukraine

The flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet sank after an attack from Ukrainian forces triggered a “significant explosion” as the vessel floated off the coast of Ukraine, U.S. officials said Thursday, with Moscow offering a competing claim about the cause of the destruction.

Russia’s Defense Ministry acknowledged the sinking but said its missile cruiser — the Moskva — had been damaged after a fire. Earlier that day, the hobbled warship was moving under its own power, heading to the Crimean port city of Sevastopol for repairs, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said. The episode buoys the morale of Ukrainian forces, who have repelled the Russian invasion for 50 days and are girding for a new phase of fierce fighting in the country’s east.

The explosion occurred Wednesday, when the ship was roughly 75 miles from Odessa, a seaside hub in Ukraine’s south, a senior U.S. defense official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the Pentagon. Odessa’s governor said the Moskva was hit by a Ukrainian anti-ship missile, an assertion backed by another American official familiar with the matter, who confirmed the strike but could not verify the specific weapons system used.

Russia, meanwhile, said the fire on board caused ammunition stocks to detonate, forcing the evacuation of at least some of the 500-person crew. As the Moskva was being towed to port, it sank due to a “heavy storm,” the Russian Defense Ministry said. It was not clear whether any crew members died in the incident. After the explosion, several other Russian warships in the northern part of the Black Sea repositioned farther from shore, the U.S. defense official said.

Experts and analysts said Ukraine’s claim of a successful strike was more credible than the explanations emerging from Moscow. But regardless of the cause, the ship’s loss is a major, if symbolic, setback for Russia, said Artyom Lukin, an international relations professor at the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok, Russia.

The Moskva is named after Russia’s capital and was at the center of a widely reported attack against Ukrainian border guards on Snake Island in the Black Sea. The guards drew global attention for insulting Russian troops during the early days of the invasion.

“The loss of not just a principal surface combatant in the Russian navy, but also the fleet flagship, would amount to more of a psychological blow to the Russians,” said Collin Koh, an expert on maritime security at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.

On Ukraine’s Snake Island, a defiant last stand against Russian forces

Ukraine’s military said its forces had fired a Neptune anti-ship missile at the Moskva, and the U.S. defense official said the claim was plausible, adding that artillery rounds and missiles aboard the ship could also have been involved in an explosion, or that the ship could have struck a mine.

One Moscow-based think tank, the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, said on its Telegram channel earlier Thursday that it believed the ship had been sunk in a missile attack. The source of the think tank’s claims was unclear. Mark Cancian, senior adviser for the international security program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said it was “more likely” that the explosion was caused by Ukraine’s anti-ship cruise missiles than by some sort of accident.

“Given that there’s a war going on and the Ukrainians have this anti-ship capability, it’s more likely that it was caused by these cruise missiles,” Cancian said.

Ukraine began developing the Neptune missile in 2013 as a deterrent against Russian sea power off its southeastern coast. It is based on an older Russian model, the KH-35, which Ukraine was also involved in producing. Fired from a truck-mounted launcher, the missile has a maximum range of 173 to 186 miles.

At roughly 600 feet long, the Moskva presented a large target. It was armed with 16 anti-ship missiles and originally built to destroy U.S. aircraft carriers. Its destruction could reduce Russia’s capabilities against NATO, Cancian said.

“The flagship is literally the ship on which the admiral’s flag flies,” he said. “It’s typically the largest and most important ship in a fleet or squadron, and that’s the case here — this is a large and very powerful ship.”

The damage to the Moskva is more significant because of previous Russian naval losses, said James Black, an expert on the Russian military at the Rand Corp. Last month, Ukraine’s navy said it hit a Russian amphibious landing ship in Berdyansk, a Ukrainian port that Russian forces have occupied.

No matter what caused the damage to the Moskva, Black said, “it will likely be seen as poetic justice by Ukrainians and their supporters.”

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
