Becoming a Bosun: All About the Bosun Meaning and Its Career

But what is a bosun on a ship? In a few minutes, you are up-to-date about the bosun meaning and how to become a boatswain, its original term.

What is a bosun?

Before going into the details of a boatswain’s career, we give you a brief bosun definition. A boatswain is a seafarer working in offshore or merchant shipping. He/she is not only part of the qualified deckhands but is seen as the most experienced and competent one. Therefore, a bosun often holds a senior rate in the deck department. Not surprising that this person bears a lot of responsibilities on board.

“ A bosun is a real all-rounder ”

“You organize and manage the day-to-day running of the exterior of a ship”, says former bosun Ruud Wessing who has been working at sea for 48 years. A boatswain is in charge of the deckhands, assures the maintenance on deck, and ensures that the vessel operations are running well. A boatswain is under the guidance of a chief officer. Besides being a natural leader who likes to roll up his/her sleeves, he/she is social and positive. A bosun is a real all-rounder!

What does the boatswain job entail.

What a bosun's working day looks like depends on the size of the ship and the team of deckhands. Besides, on vessels that are below the 50-meter line, a boatswain may be known as the lead sailor that mainly carries out hands-on activities. On larger vessels, there is a lead deckhand and a bosun, with the latter serving as the manager and the first as his/her assistant.

As the manager or foreman of the deckhands, the bosun is the one first coming up in the morning and the last going back into the cabin every evening. He/she spends most of his working time on and around the deck. His/her general day-to-day responsibilities can be separated into several categories - you will be in charge of ‘crew supervision’, ‘security monitoring’, ‘vessel maintenance’, ‘ship navigation’, and ‘mooring, anchoring, and splitting’.

Crew supervision

First, a deck foreman supervises the crew members, the ordinary seaman, and the able seaman, working on board. “He/she determines and plans the daily schedule and divides the necessary tasks to the appropriate deck crew members”, explains Wessing. During the day, this deck foreman checks whether the tasks are being carried out properly and on time. As a senior, the boatswain is expected to act like a role model. 

Sometimes, senior deckhands need to account for their tasks to their supervisor, the chief officer, or directly to the captain. The boatswain acts as a link between the officers and the crew members. He/she discusses with officers and the captain which tasks should be prioritized. In addition, he/she communicates if any problems arise, such as damage to equipment or injuries to deck members.

Security monitoring

Second, the bosun is tasked with overseeing safety on board, such as whether crew members carry out their work safely. He/she is also the contact person in case of any injuries to the staff. Furthermore, he/she conducts safety exercises and inspections, to be able to act properly, for example, in fire situations. 

“We used to walk in slippers”, says Wessing. “Now protective clothing is mandatory”. The former boatswain says that safety protocols have become increasingly important and are therefore more monitored. Wessing takes the vessels to build wind farms at sea as an example: "The daily work is much more complex and therefore more challenging than on, let’s say, a tugboat.”

Vessel maintenance

Third, as a senior deckhand, you must not be afraid to get your hands dirty. This certainly happens since you take care of the maintenance of the ship’s exterior, tenders, and other equipment. Although it may sound obvious, these tasks must be done properly. The maintenance duties make the bosun job dynamic and serve as a good variety with the more managerial tasks. 

Tasks are deck painting, cleaning accommodations, separating waste, and piloting activities. Also, the hull of the vessel as well as the anchors and windlasses are maintained. “To prevent defects, rust, and corrosion of the vessel and its equipment, the deck foreman performs maintenance inspections”, says Wessing. “He/she determines whether repairs are needed and directs the deckhands to fix it.”

The deck foreman also takes care of the supplies of the vessel. This means, for example, guaranteeing the presence of equipment and its elements. Wessing: “If new supplies are necessary, the deck foreman makes sure new orders are made.”

Ship navigating

Fourth, the bosun assists in the navigation of the vessel. Previously, he/she keeps logs of the necessary nautical charts and instruments. The world, and therefore the maritime sector as well, is subject to digitization. There are now GPS systems and onboard computers taking over much of the former boatswain’s navigation duties. However, when these devices fail, a bosun is expected to be able to take over the navigation.

Mooring and anchoring

Lastly, a deck foreman ensures that the ship runs smoothly during mooring, anchoring, and sailing (away). He/she manages the anchors, the ropes, and the chains of the mooring lines. For example, when reaching a port, the boatswain lays down the mooring lines on deck. When arriving at or loosening from the wharf, he/she guarantees proper communication and collaboration with the shore staff and the deck members.

"Splitting trusses is also an important part of this." As a bosun, Wessing has had to do this a lot, an act that, according to him, not everyone can master. Splitting makes trusses thinner, used to moor vessels. “Bunches are also split to ensure they fit through machines”, says Wessing. 

What are the required skills?

What skills do you need to be able to perform the above tasks? As said before, a boatswain is a real all-rounder on board! Therefore, to become one, you need to be intelligent and possess a variety of competencies. The following are important:

Leadership skills

A bosun has leadership qualities - he/she has an opinion, idea, or vision and dares to propagate his/her work strategies. In addition, a boatswain can stimulate cooperation between the deckhands and motivate them to achieve desired results on board. Furthermore, the deck foreman is an organizer and a good planner, overseeing and direct the crew and the (performed) tasks.

Flexibility and problem-solving

Moreover, a bosun must be flexible - he/she must be able to adapt to different and changing circumstances. Given the diverse tasks, the dynamics on board, and the dependence on many crew members, a day like a boatswain will never go as planned. For example, when parts of a ship fail or there is a shortage of deckhand, a bosun needs to be a quick thinker and act spontaneously.

Independent and team player

What’s more, a bosun must be able to work well in a team as well as individually. He/she is a team player when directing the team of deckhands and corresponding with the chief officer and the captain. However, since a deck foreman is responsible for performing several tasks on board and is a point of contact for the crew, he will also have to be able to take on tasks independently.

A boatswain is also expected to have strong communication skills as he/she is the mediator between the crew members on the one hand and the chief officer and the captain on the other. In addition, to account for your work and to direct the deckhands, you must be proficient both verbally and in writing. According to Wessing, social adroitness here is a pre: "As a manager on deck, you need to be able to work with different people."

Technical skills

Another important requirement is technical skills, as various processes on board are automated by digital devices. Take the navigation system. Even though a computer can do most of the navigation work, the bosun needs to understand how it works. Moreover, to be able to take over the navigation in case of errors, technical knowledge of the vessel's geographical position is crucial.

Ready for a bosun job?

What are bosun’s required education and qualifications.

To become a bosun, you need to have at least a high school degree or a General Education Diploma (GED certificate). Sometimes, maritime employers ask for an Associate's Degree in Marine Transportation or an equivalent area of discipline. Some senior deckhands have completed an HBO diploma at the nautical school, obtained a bachelor's degree, or even have a master's degree. But this is not necessary.

Officially there are no certificates specifically necessary for boatswain, however, without the following ones, you cannot climb the career path of a bosun. Many employers prefer seafarers who are certified. With the right documents in your pocket, you have a better chance. In addition, your salary is higher than a boatswain who is not certified. The following certificates are relevant:

• MCA STCW Basic Safety training
• ENG1 medical certificate
• Tender Driving License
• EDH (Efficient deckhand) course
• Started with OOW (Officer of Watch) Modules

Also, at least two or three years of deckhand experience is required, to gain a strong comprehension of sailing and the operational processes on board. Most training will be on the job, in acquiring the position as one of the most experienced deckhands, to, in the end, become a bosun. Besides the important basic experience certificates, you can always boost your resume with the following certificates:

• RYA Power Boat Level 2 or IYT Tender Driver License
• GMDSS VHF/SRC Radio Operators Certificate
• Extended OOW modules
• AEC (Approved Engine Course)

How to obtain the bosun position?

Becoming a deck foreman is easier said than done. Wessing tells how it used to be: “Back then you could work your way up - I started as a cook's mate, after which I became a deck boy. I learned how to split ropes, helped the bosun with chores in the evening, and became a sailor, up to a bosun.” Wessing says that nowadays certificates and appraisals are becoming more important.

“ Listen to your supervisor, show initiative and stand out ”

There are many working parts that contribute to the smooth running of a yacht. Each crew position is integral to the puzzle. In this series, Luxury Yacht Group talks to crew about how they came aboard and what keeps them there.

What’s a bosun? Aside from a strange word, the simplest dictionary definition of a bosun is a ship’s officer in charge of equipment and the crew . As the highest-ranked member of a ship’s deck department, he or she is responsible for the rest of the yacht’s deck crew and all associated equipment. Sounds simple, right? The role is anything but. There is way more to being a bosun than the basic definition provided above.

Daily Schedule… Or Lack There Of

There are no normal hours for a bosun on a yacht charter. The bosun plays 100 different roles, which can vary from one minute to the next. Some of the duties that a bosun performs, guests will never even know about (that’s part of the magic of being a charter guest).

The bosun is a teacher and a true teammate. He or she is constantly sharing knowledge and encouragement with those in his command as he or she leads the rest of the deck crew throughout a wide variety of tasks. From anchoring to sitting watch to tying a particular type of knot, the bosun is a true leader for his team.

Duties Of A Bosun

The bosun is a host (and most likely a comedian). If you spend a lot of time on the water and on a superyacht’s deck, you’ll get to know the bosun pretty well. This is a great thing, as your standard bosun is full of interesting stories and has a true zest for adventure. He’ll get you whatever you need, even if what you need is an inflatable swan.

The bosun is also a safety officer. From jet-skis to tubing to wakeboarding to scuba diving, yachting provides guests tons of opportunities to try new and exciting activities. However, without taking proper precautions, some of these activities have the potential to be dangerous. The bosun is always watching the water to ensure that everyone is having fun, but most importantly staying safe.

Duties of A Bosun (Boatswain) on a Ship

When one watches movies of ships and boats, the name of a boatswain or a bosun stands out quite clearly.The name bosun is actually derived from the original term boatswain that was used to describe these professionals for the first time in England in the 15th century.

In today’s times, however, both bosun and boatswain are used commonly to describe the people working in this profession. For the purposes of this article, we will use the word Bosun hereon.

To understand the role of the Bosun, we must first look at the career progression for the same. A trainee OS (ordinary seaman) after having gained the appropriate experience becomes an OS. Following that, after gaining further experience, the OS is promoted to the rank of an AB (able-bodied seaman).

When the AB is deemed by the company to be well experienced and in possession of the requisite skills to be one, he is promoted to the rank of the Bosun.  A bosun has to be thorough with seamanship practices and must possess considerable knowledge in the aspects of knots, hitches, bends, whipping, and splices for anchoring the vessel, among other things.

The main duties of bosuns revolve in the deck area of the ship . The Bosun is a member of the deck department and his duty, among others, is to supervise the deck crew of the vessel. The bosun is also involved, under the purview of the Chief Officer (and eventually the Master), in the planning, scheduling and assigning of work to the deck crew on the ship.

To further simplify his role, a Bosun has to ensure that the lowermost workers are effective in their duties and that the ship’s officers are able to carry out their quota of work without constant direct involvement with the crew’s deck work and all other aspects involving the deck crew.

Bosuns are required to be experienced because when it comes to the deck crew sailors they are the superiors. The more experience a person has been a boatswain, the more helpful he will be to maintain the efficiency and the promptness required on the deck. The experience to become a bosun is gained by the years one puts as a deck sailor.

It has to be noted that since the responsibility of Bosuns is quite large, the pay given to them is also high. Shipping companies usually pay the Bosun a premium amount as compared to other deck crew seeing as his experience and responsibilities are considerably more. The pay is decided by the Unions set up specifically for professionals who are existing bosuns or aspire to be bosuns.

Initially, before ships were fitted with equipment like GPS and computers and other technologies, the boatswain was also required to have technical knowledge about a ship’s geographic positioning and many other important details. But after this equipment came to be used extensively, the technical know-how for bosuns has stopped being compulsory requirements.

General Duties Of The Bosun

• Planning the daily work schedule under the purview of the Chief Officer and assigning the required work to the appropriate members of the deck crew. For example, a job that requires more experience will be assigned to an AB rather than an OS
• Seeing that the work assigned to the crew is realised to the end
• Maintaining the deck of the ship; tasks involve chipping, painting, buffing etc and overall maintenance of the deck
• Maintenance of the windlass of the ship to ensure its optimum performance during stations. Also, to perform repair work onboard as required
• Being thorough with the firefighting aspects of the ship and ensuring that other deck crews are thorough as well
• Responsible for the ship’s deck stores, paint locker, Bosun store and other such areas as assigned to the Bosun by the Chief Officer
• Ensuring that the mooring operations, anchoring or the vessel is carried out efficiently
• Inform the Chief Officer of the progress of the deck work being carried out
• Being the connect between the officers and the crew with regard to shipboard work

To categorise the general duties of the Bosun, they can be classified under the following headings:

• Supervision: As mentioned above, the Bosun supervises the deck crew for the work that they carried out and ensure that the work carried out is of appropriate quality and is done on time
• Maintenance: A couple of points cover this aspect; to reiterate the importance of it, the Bosun ensures work is out carried out in the assigned areas to ensure that the deck is maintained properly. Aside from preventive maintenance, the Bosun also is a guide to the junior members of the crew to understand the importance of deck work and its effective execution
• Mooring/Anchoring: From the time when the mooring lines are laid out deck prior to reaching port, right to the time when the ship is cast off, the Bosun plays a crucial role for efficient operations of the vessel. The same applies to the anchoring of the vessel

To sum it up, the Bosun plays a vital role in ensuring that the ship is seaworthy. Being the proxy between the officers and the crew, the Bosun is essential and imperative to the smooth functioning of the ship.

what certificate the boatswain should hold ?

I always wanted to know what my dad’s duties were aboard ship. He passed away when I was young. His journeys at sea became my bedtime stories and the souvenirs he brought home encouraged me to go into Art History. Thank you for this post & to our dedicated Merchant Marines.

In 1955, a Junior Third Mate (deck officer) on SS Exiria told me that at his first assignment in WW2 as an Ordinary Seaman, he found that the entire deck gang, including the boatswain, able seamen, and ordinaries were his classmates at the Sheepshead Bay recruit training center. The war zone extended to U-Boats working the area immediately around Sheepshead Bay.

One of the AB’s, a Galician (Spanish Celt) named Patricio was noted for having tracked an enemy plane with a 20mm anti-aircraft gun. Having no safety cutout, he shot holes in the stack. Stacks are repairable.

• The Superyacht crew hierarchy explained

When you first start looking for Superyacht crew jobs, you’ll most likely be considering becoming a Deckhand or Stewardess.

These are two of the most popular entry point roles into a Superyacht career, and – as we never tire of saying here at Flying Fish – promise an abundance of benefits and incredible experiences!

Of course, these are not the only Superyacht crew jobs on offer, and if you are about to or have completed your Deckhand or Stewardess training, you may be wondering what other kinds of crew members you’ll be working with.

What’s just as important to know however is the hierarchy of those crew members; not only so that you know who to report to in different situations, but so that, if you want to progress your career beyond the Deckhand or Stewardess role, you’ll have an idea of the best path to take!

Depending on the size of the Superyacht, the hierarchy of a Superyacht crew goes something like this:

Working under the owner of the Superyacht or the owner’s representatives, the Captain of a Superyacht is responsible for the safe and smooth running of the ship – so he or she is who you will ultimately need to answer to!

The duties of the Captain go beyond navigation and the sailing of the vessel to managing admin, health and safety, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations, financial reporting and much more.

If you’re looking to become a Superyacht Captain yourself, you’ll need to have worked your way up from the majority of the other roles in this blog, as well as undertake a number of other qualifications and be able to demonstrate a variety of knowledge and skills, including seafaring, admin, IT, health and safety, and even accounting.

2. Officer of the Watch (OOW)

The OOW is second in command to the Captain and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the deck, as well as taking care of navigation and running watches when on passage.

They’ll also have a significant hand in the maintenance of the Superyacht, as well as being in charge of the deck equipment inventory.

If this is a role you’d like to progress to, there are several different paths you can take, all of which we’ve shared in our blog “ Becoming an Officer of the Watch (OOW) ”.

This is one of the lesser-known roles on a Superyacht (as their duties will usually fall to the Captain on smaller vessels), but is nevertheless important!

In brief, the Purser works under the captain, taking charge of financial matters on the Superyacht (e.g., accounting, purchasing food, drink and cleaning supplies etc.), as well as taking care of HR and recruitment.

In fact, they may well be one of the first people you meet when you begin applying for Superyacht crew jobs!

In order to become one, you’ll need to have sound knowledge and experience of the Superyacht industry, and have a range of financial and IT skills and qualifications under your belt on top of your STCW certificate and ENG1 Medical certificate.

4. Chief Engineer

A Superyacht is a vast and complex vehicle – so, as well as Deckhands taking care of its exterior, it also needs someone to manage it’s mechanical functioning – and that’s where the Chief Engineer comes in!

In a nutshell, the Chief Engineer (and the 2nd Engineer who works under him/her) are responsible for ensuring that every aspect of the Superyacht’s mechanics runs without a hitch.

If Chief or 2nd Engineer is a role you’d like to pursue, starting off with Deckhand training is a good choice, as it will provide you with a good introduction to Diesel Engine Maintenance and general maintenance and repairs.

5. Head Chef

A Superyacht holiday wouldn’t be complete without delicious meals for guests to enjoy. Every Superyacht therefore has an appointed Head Chef to take on the role of providing these to the highest possible standard throughout the day.

To become a Head Chef on board a Superyacht, you’ll need to have completed all the necessary culinary qualifications to become a chef and have comprehensive experience of working as a Head or Sous Chef in a hotel or restaurant. You’ll then also need to have your STCW Basic Safety Training certification on top!

Working as a Crew Chef (working under the Head Chef and making meals for all the members of the Superyacht crew) is a great entry point into this role.

“Bosun” is another term for “Senior Deckhand.” Their role is to take charge of daily cleaning and maintenance tasks, as well as drive the yachts tenders and (if on a larger boat requiring more crew) look after the Deckhands working under them.

After a few seasons of experience and proven hard work and dedication as a Deckhand, you’ll be in a great position to apply for a Bosun job!

7. Chief Stewardess

The Chief Stewardess is in charge of the Superyacht’s interior, including laundry and service. It is their duty to ensure that guests on board have a five-star experience around the clock! Like the Bosun, the Chief Stewardess will also be in charge of looking after a team of Stewardesses, depending on the size of the boat.

Again, as with a Deckhand, after a few seasons working as a committed and stand-out Stewardess, the Chief Stewardess role will be within easy reach.

8. Deckhand

The role of the Deckhand is to maintain and clean the exterior of the yacht to ensure that it is in perfect condition at all times.

The Deckhand is also involved in other deck operations , mooring, anchoring and sometimes security.

This, along with the Stewardess, is at the bottom of the Superyacht hierarchy, and is best pursued after the completion of a Superyacht Deckhand course .

9. Stewardess

As a Stewardess, you’ll be assisting the Chief Stewardess to ensure that guests on board the Superyacht enjoy only the best possible experience.

This involves working on the interior of the yacht, including service, cabin preparation and providing guests and owners with whatever they need.

Although you can work as a Stewardess without any prior experience (same as a Deckhand), it’s always a good idea to undertake a Superyacht Stewardess course first and gain a number of other skills to give you the upper hand when applying for roles!

How much money do these crew members earn?

In sum, the hierarchy of Superyacht crew jobs is straightforward – but offers a wealth of exciting career possibilities to the most dedicated of seafarers!

If you are a well-organised individual with a keen eye for detail, then taking on the position of Bosun is a fantastic way to progress your yachting career.

A Bosun’s main responsibility is overseeing and providing guidance to the Deckhands, along with organizing and supervising deck operations, deployment and storage of toys and tenders and making sure the exterior is kept in excellent condition. 

They are in charge of deck supplies and have a good knowledge of all the products used to clean and maintain the exterior of the yacht. A Bosun is likely to be the main tender driver, so they are in close contact with guests. They need to have confidence and a positive attitude when engaging with guests, while also demonstrating a passion for the experience on the ocean. A Bosun must be open-minded, fun by nature, and possess a willingness to regularly socialise with all guests.

What does a Bosun do? | Bosun Job Description

Bosuns are the bridge between Deckhands and Officers, so it's up to the Bosun to oversee a team of Deckhands while maintaining the exterior of the yacht. They need to be very familiar with yacht cleaning products, ways to get the teak looking spotless and ways of repairing anything on deck, while also doing additional tasks such as bridge watches and security patrols.

The responsibilities of a Bosun include:

Planning the daily deck duties and assigning them to the Deckhand team

Seeing that the work assigned to the crew is realised to the end

Maintenance of the yacht exterior

Ensuring that the mooring operations, anchoring or the vessel is carried out efficiently

Tender driving

Bridge watches

Overseeing and assisting guests in water sports

Soft and hard skills required to be a Bosun

Taking the lead in maintaining the exterior of a yacht means a Bosun needs lots of practical knowledge so skills like painting, varnishing, caulking, and filling are a vital part of the job. In addition to that, a very important part of being a Bosun also includes sharing knowledge and growing the skill level of the Deck crew. 

The skills of a successful yacht Bosun include:

Excellent yacht maintenance skills such as varnishing, painting, carpentry etc.

Ability to lead and motivate the deck team 

Good organisational skills and ability to delegate work

Excellent eye for detail

Good tender driving skills

Confidence with water sports activities

Mandatory certificates needed to work on board a yacht 

All crew members regardless of position and seniority need to have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, along with a recognised Seafarers medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.

We have a fantastic opportunity recently available for a passionate and experienced Bosun to join a beautiful, well run, private 60m SY. This is ideal for someone adventurous and has a real love for diving.   She is currently undergoing their 15 years survey in the yard, where the masts, rigging, paint work have been renewed, and the teak decks have been replaced. We’re looking for the right person to be the custodian of the deck and take care of it moving forward. The Bosun and Deckhand take care of the bulk of the work on deck as the C/O role is heavy on the admin.side of things. Guest trips are often dive orientated, so time can be split with jet tender driving, diving itself. An understanding of safe diving practices is also important. The owners are energetic, engaging and personable,  therefore crew that can match this are essential.The Crew on board are a very positive lot, Someone who is a ‘go-getter’, ‘self-starter’, and is motivated to do the best possible job for all the right reasons is what’s required as well as being Safety conscious and is a problem solver.   Contract:  Permanent   Yacht: 60m SY – private usage   Starting date:  June   About the program : currently in the yard for approximately the next 3 -4 months.  After the completion of the yard period, commissioning and sea trials, the vessel will be delivered to the Pacific and is a world wide cruising vessel.   Required Documents/Certificates : STCW, Minimum of YM Offshore and working towards OOW. PADI DiveMaster or Instructor would be highly desirable. Valid ENG1 and B1B2.

  Requirements for application:  You must be a strong sailor with a min. of 2 years experience onboard a large sailing yacht.  Must be capable and confident in leading a navigational watch while under sail. Must be capable and confident in leading working aloft procedures. Must be capable and confident operating an in-boom leisure furl sailing system, as well as hydraulic headsail system.   Salary : Negotiable for the right candidate but between USD$5,500 to $6,500 per month. 60 days annual leave, 2 return flights, supported training.   Male/Female candidates:   Males for cabin arrangements.

  Additional information:  With the ISM, IDEA and YCO systems onboard, computer literacy is a prerequisite. No smokers.

Bosun / Second Mate Job Specification

The role of the bosun can vary more noticeably between motor and sail but as a rule the bosun would be expected to help Manage deck crew with the first mate but report separately to the first mate.

To be able to work efficiently and safely the bosun must be able to manage and maintain inventories and spares for routine and preventative maintenance on tenders and water toys. In the case of sailing yachts the role also encompasses maintaining the standing and running rigging maintenance, rotation and service of all deck equipment and hardware.

While reporting to the engineer and Mate they may also be required to assist deck crew with day to day running of deck and guest care and service including tender driver.

Below Deck Mediterranean season 8 star Luka Brunton should have returned for season 9. He joined the franchise as the lead deckhand in Below Deck Down Under season 2. Luka performed well as a deckhand and was asked to join Below Deck Med in the same role. Captain Sandy Yawn promoted him early in the season after Ruan Irving was fired for forging paperwork. He had to adapt quickly to the new role and felt the pressure immediately. Nonetheless, the rest of his crew was ecstatic for him, which was a true testament to his character.

Luka was a very flirtatious crew member on Mustique. He was friendly to his crew members but often found him in hot water, creating drama among his co-workers. However, overall, Below Deck Med season 8 was a letdown. Luka stirred up a lot of drama during the show with his boatmances , but the season still lacked an entertainment factor. He’s seemingly not a part of the Below Deck Med season 9 cast , which would be a mistake.

Luka Was A Drama Magnet

The Below Deck Med season 8 bosun was a drama magnet during the show. In Below Deck Down Under season 2, Luka was involved in a brief love triangle with Culver Bradbury and Jaimee Neale. That fizzled out, but he made up for it during Below Deck Med . He was a naturally flirty person and first formed a close relationship with stew Natayla Scudder . They decided to take a step back from things as Natalya was figuring out her relationship back home. Nonetheless, this didn’t slow Luka down, and he began hooking up with stew Jessika Asai.

He made a quick switch, to say the least. Luka said he and Jessika had a “ no strings ” boatmance and continued texting with Natalya. In a shocking turn of events, Luka revealed he was texting with former Below Deck Med star Katie Flood . Even though she had dated one of his friends, there was speculation that they would potentially pursue a romantic relationship. Luka seemingly hinted at this when speaking about Katie in his confessionals. He went back and forth between saying that they were “ just friends ” and insinuating something could happen in the future.

“Obviously, I like Jess a little bit more than a friend. We are not in a relationship. I’m not f***ing dating Katie Flood. We’re just friends. Just friends. Even if I was texting her as more than a friend.”

While Katie wasn’t on the boat, her friendship with Luka stirred up the drama. He created a whole storyline with a woman who wasn’t even in the cast. Luka knew how to stir up the drama during Below Deck Med season 8, but things would be different for him going forward. Nowadays, Luka has a girlfriend, so it’s unlikely he would have had any boatmances on Below Deck Med season 9. However, he could still meddle among the crew.

Luka Was A Decent Bosun

Luka had enough experience to return & keep learning.

Luka had to step up after Captain Sandy fired her original Bosun during Below Deck Med season 8. Going into the charter season, he had no clue that he’d have to take on such a responsibility. As the lead deckhand, Luka was next in line for the role of Bosun. He was unprepared and admittedly felt the pressure when saying yes to Captain Sandy’s offer . Luka was not the best Below Deck Bosun ever, but he still did well at his job. Without boatmances pulling his focus, he could grow into an even better Bosun.

Luka Deserved Another Season

Luka should have another chance to prove himself.

Luka should've been asked back for another season of Below Deck Med . After playing a minimal role in the narrative of Below Deck Down Under season 2, Captain Jason Chambers referred him to Captain Sandy. In Below Deck Med season 8, Luka was involved in a lot of drama that occurred during the season. On top of that, Luka was the Bosun , one of the most important roles on the boat.

Luka wasn’t kicked off the yacht or fired for bad behavior, so there’s no reason he shouldn’t have returned for Below Deck Med season 9.

Luke went into his first stint with the franchise during Below Deck Down Under season 2 with seven years of yachting industry under his belt. There have been plenty of other Bosuns who came in with much less experience. Ruan was supposed to be the Bosun during Below Deck Med season 8. However, there were many issues with his paperwork. Captain Sandy learned that he likely forged his paperwork to land the job. On the contrary, Luka didn’t have to lie about his years of yachting experience.

Could Luka Be Done With The Below Deck Franchise Forever?

Luka has not written off the Below Deck franchise quite yet. During an interview with Now To Love , he said he had “ no idea ” if he’d return to the show anytime soon. “ I’m just working on a normal boat at the moment and currently just on standby. I’d love to get back on the show, but we’ll see what happens, ” he said. It would be interesting to see Luka work with, Aesha Scott, again in a future season of Below Deck Med .

Luka and Aesha met during the early years of their yachting careers in France. She served as Chief Stew during Below Deck Down Under season 2, where Luka was the lead deckhand. They consider each other family and have maintained a great friendship. Luka even hooked up with Aesha’s sister years ago after a night out. It would have been great to see their relationship on display during Below Deck Med season 9, and the show missed out on this opportunity.

Luka should have returned for Below Deck Med season 9 . He was a great Bosun for Captain Sandy, and his team enjoyed him as their boss. Luka brought the drama during Below Deck Med season 8, which is surprising he is not returning for season 9. Hopefully, future seasons of the show will see Luka's return.

Epaulets Explained: Everything You Need to Know About the Crew Ranking System

When greeting guests at the passerelle your shirt must be tucked, hair tied back, and do not forget your epaulets. It is funny to think how a piece of material could be held in such high regard, but in yachting it is an all-important symbol of rank. 

The word epaulet, also spelled 'epaulette', comes from the French word “epaule” meaning shoulder (no surprise there) but its origins can be traced back to military coats worn at the end of the 17th century. Back then, epaulets were ribbons tied into knots with the fringe end left free. They were partially decorative but also prevented shoulder belts from slipping as they carried around a bayonet or sword.

By the early 18th century, epaulets had become a distinguishing feature of commissioned rank in the military and were adopted into the United States Navy uniform regulations in 1797. Captains wore an epaulet on each shoulder while the lieutenants wore only one, which eventually evolved into today's stripe system.

The system isn’t rocket science: the more stripes you have on your epaulets the higher you rank. Naturally, the captain sits at the top of the pecking order with four stripes while green crew will likely be given just the one, although this can vary from yacht to yacht depending on size and number of crew on board.

Four stripes : Captain, chief engineer

Three stripes : First officer, first engineer, chief stewardess, chef

Two stripes : Bosun, second stewardess, second engineer

One stripe : Deckhand, third stewardess, third engineer

The stripes are also accompanied by symbols that represent which department each member of crew belongs to. The captain, first officer, and deckhands have anchors emblazoned on their epaulets, while engineers have a propellor. Stewardesses' epaulets are often silver and embroidered with a crescent moon. The shape is a historic symbol of food and supplies and can be traced back to the 1800s where Napoleon introduced crescent-shaped bread into the rations for the Grande Armée.

In the military, epaulets are generally limited to ceremonial uniforms and the same goes on board a luxury yacht. White shirts and epaulets are generally worn on smart occasions such as welcoming guests aboard or dinner service. More often, you'll find crews dressed down in polo shirts or t-shirts branded with the yacht's name and a pair of shorts.
