Review of Sun 27

Basic specs., sailing characteristics.

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Sun 27 is 1.96, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Sun 27 is about 125 kg/cm, alternatively 705 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 125 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 705 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

The Sun 27 is a 27.5ft masthead sloop designed by Monk/Perry and built in fiberglass by Spencer Boats Ltd. since 1977.

The Sun 27 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a very short water supply range.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Not certain but I believe they did. There were only a couple or three built as I recall.

The Sun 31 was a splash of the S2 9.2A, and the Sun 34 was built in the third-hand moulds of the San Juan 34, originally built as the Crown 34.  The Sun 34 version only came with the shorter rig option of the Crown models.

SIFF said: Here is a treat.  I found some pics of a pristine example of Reinell's own 26 footer, the C2600, which was sold under the Reinell name.  It was available from '76 on.  It had a little 22' sister called the RS 2240, available from '75 on. Reinell boat interior construction of the 70's is typified by use of lots of wood-grain covered Formica plywood panels with the exposed edges covered by a vinyl fascia strip (or by nothing, when nobody was looking or sometimes confusingly where they were looking).  They used Robertson screw-lock square drive fasteners and each gets a white or tan plastic fastener cover over the screw head creating a row of contrasting dots.  Since plywood is the major interior structural material, everything looks very upright and very square-ish.   View attachment 452751 Don't those dinette benches just shout comfort.   It could almost be the interior of a Winnebago.  "Sailboat" details like the hand rails on the interior ceiling look like they were designed by somebody who had never seen one, but had one described over the telephone and then asked Fred Flintstone to carve one out of stone. Look carefully and you can see the "walk through keel" feature, a patent of Arthur S. Henry.  Henry patented the concept of extending the deck of a sailboat's cabin into the keel in order to achieve more headroom.  Henry owned a company in Anaheim called American Mariner Industries, and seemed to have sold these boats in parallel with Reinell from 1975 to 1979 as "American 23/26's".  AMI went broke in 1982 and their assets were sold in 1983. Authors note: I remember walking through the "Reinell New Walk-thru-keel" at the 1978 Seattle Boat Show.  It was the thing you had to do at the show !  The only problem was, the sunken keel path was only about a foot wide, like a trough running down the middle of your cabin.  It might have supported six-footer headroom, but they certainly weren't getting past each other without doing some Watusi-like gyrations. The interior is of course flushed out in low pile shag with plushy rat fur over the (few) exposed fiberglass sections. The exterior show that it was happy to sit on a trailer and that it has some sailboat like appliances copied from the bathtub toy of the son of the main designer from which he got his inspiration. And it looks like the boom was stolen from the employees coat closet in the cafeteria. Truly a boat that any Reinell speed boat/cruiser (or Winnebago owner) would feel comfortable in.  What is missing from the design is a feeling of, well "sailboat".  But of course we are here because, every boat has a soul, no matter how modest and pedestrian... If this was Reinell's best in-house effort from their design staff, it is clear that whomever designed the Sun Yacht layout came from a different gene pool, drank at a different bar, and worked from a different office far out of town far from the Reinell main plant. That said, Reinell perhaps created a "tiger team" with the task "make us an upmarket 27 foot sailboat that sails well and has credibility in the sailboat crowd and looks upmarket (and not aimed for the Reinell traditional customer)".  Properly isolated, funded and with outside designer help from the Northwest's pool of sailboat designers, such a team could create a Sun 27, the antithesis of a Reinell 26. Pulled from various sources: Hein Driehuyzen was the manager of Calgan Marine,(Vancouver, BC,CA).  The first boat he designed was  the CROWN 34 for Calgan (who's boat works was on Crown Street in North Vancouver.  After leaving Calgan in 1976, he went on to design the Sceptre line of yachts.  30 CROWN 34's were built between 1975-79. After production of the Crown 34 ended in 1979, the molds were sold to Glas-Fab Inc. of Monroe, WA. That company only built five examples, under the name "Sun 1030". The molds were then repossessed by Calgan and later sold again, this time to the Clark Boat Company in Kent, Washington. After some modifications by Clark, the design became the San Juan 34, which was introduced in 1980.  Bob Clark retired and sold the company in 1984 to San Juan Industries (who went out of business shortly after). Could Glas-Fab Inc. of Monroe (just East of Marysville WA) the company behind the Sun Yachts PO Box front?

In the last year of production, the identical specification was sold by Reinell dealers as a “ Reinell 27” outside of Northwest markets to clear stock and support Reinell dealers who had just introduced to Reinell’s own first Reinell named sailboat effort. Only a handful of Reinell badged Cheetahs were sold. The Cheetah would be the basis for the Sun 27. Andy Coupland, a yacht broker who had boats named Bagheera, is still around. Perhaps he has some input.

"..I'm guessing really a 1978 Sun 27? I suspect the seller just did the lookup on the MIC that was later reissued and also misinterpreted the last two digits of the serial number as the year..." Good eye! You've earned your diploma from the HIN Interpretive Academy.  It is a Sun 27, Hull 86, built in 1978 with the OMC Zephyr sail drive.  Curious that a "1 owner" boat seller wouldn't know the type of the boat they were selling, but perhaps it was dear old dad who has gone to trade sailing yarns in the great Sloop Tavern in the sky. The SYV MIC was re-issued by the CG in the 1990s to a small marine shop in Belfair, WA called Bell's Marine/Second Wind Boats.  With a name like "Second Wind Boats" one can imagine a vast field of vintage sailboat tooling and carefully covered molds quietly waiting to spit forth new hulls to be re-issued as retro classics.  Alas, not to be.  I don't think Bell's ever made a boat. And here in the FB ad you sent we have the classic "field sailboat".   $2000 or perhaps "free to a good home". The evolution of 40 year old sailboat (those made in some volume, 30 feet long or less) seems to be this:  They have one or two long term owners in their early years (15+ years ownership), then they are passed on to  shorter-term owners (5 years ownership or so).  These owners slowly lose all the paperwork.  At some point about 25 years in the current owner is faced with a  decision point - re-power and overhaul for another 20 years of service, or pass on as a low-cost "starter" boat.  The ones that are overhauled generally find loving owners for another ten years.  The  starter boat category generally gets an outboard to address  dead engine issues but then quickly arrives another "Y" in the decision road.  One group continues to embrace the starter boat concept, putting a little money in the right places and carefully stewarding the boat to the next careful but temporary owner.  The other group become cheap boats, resold again before the next haul is required or before the engine is likely to self-destruct or the keel falls off.  These boats fall under the "as is" category and generally end up as field boats or worse.   The next step is the chainsaw and landfill. To the best I can estimate, on average only 25% of the population of lesser name production sailboats exist after 30 years and this drops to 15% after 40 years and below 10% after 45 years.  (I should qualify "production" as a run of more than 25 in one year over several years and use "lesser name" as the ultimate qualifier so no ownership group gets really mad at me ).  Clearly there are known classics with high levels of diligent and caring owners (Spencer's come to mind).  But sadly, a lot of older boats aren't with us anymore, though they were likely fine sailers in their day and would still be today. 60's and 70's boats were typically built hell-for-stout.  They didn't know any better.  It's not the hull or the mechanical design that's eventually giving out.  Fiberglass is an amazing material and can take a lot of abuse (just sitting in the sun for 40 years is an amazing accomplishment for any material).  Good maintenance along the journey separates the survivors from those headed for the landfill. But there is a new factor that further puts the death sentence on fun old boats.  In-the-water storage costs are being pushed beyond the means of the economy owner.  State DNR's make it impossible to build new marinas, so the small boat owner is first to be priced out.  With this effect, even the well maintained survivors are under peril. The modern fiberglass sailboat industry was birthed, bloomed, crashed and was reborn (the last two of these cycles a dozen times) in my lifetime.  I find joy wandering the docks looking at modest old boats.  So many interesting solutions to solve the same basic problem.  I have friends who have the need for the latest and greatest and I wish good luck to them.  But for some of us, every 4ksb is sacred.  After 3 drinks, every boat has an interesting story behind it... Enjoy your Windrose old boat, because its your old boat.  Shepard it to the next custodian who will love it and care for it when your time with it is done.

anyone ever heard of sun yachts. someone nearby is selling a '78 27' sun yacht. roller furling, 12 hp yanmar diesel, tiller steering. looked at it very quickly and appears to be in decent shape. my neighbor is looking for a boat this size. just wondering if i should recommend it or not.

sun yacht 27

Wchevron- Are you sure it isn't a Jeanneau... They've used sun in a bunch of their product names... the Sun Fast and Sun Odyssey series for example.

sun yacht 27

Sun Yachts were built by Spencer in BC, they produced the 838 (27'), a 31 footer and after a short time began to market themselves as "SUNSTAR", which are the same hulls with slightly different window treatment. They seem to be reasonable coastal cruisers, plenty of them around here. They have a good amount of space, fairly high freeboard but good headroom. Build quality would be average-to-good, Spencer has been building a lot of semi custom bigger boats for years, (many of which have done extensive ocean passages) so they know how to do it. The 27 is probably on par or better quality wise with a Catalina 27 but is a much bigger boat. The Sunstar 31 is a nice looking boat, actually suspiciously similar to the S2 31 footer. I think that there were many more 27s (8.38s) sold than the 31s. IIRC the 31s were underpowered as standard. Here's a link to a Sunstar 28 (later version of the 27) Does it look similar? Sailboats: 28' Sunstar 28 - Listing #: 2483 As always, get a good survey and check it out. I believe they both used encapsulated ballast rather than bolt on keels, underwater profile is moderate fin and spade.

faster thanks, it does look similiar but i really need a closer look. the boat is at a business and the owner wasn't around but one of the employees told me it was a sun yacht so i'm not positive it's not a jenneau but the employee said the owner told him the boat was built in washington state which is close to B.C. so i think it might be a sun. thanks for the help, i'm going to let my neighbor know about it. it's been on the hard for a couple of years but the asking price is $5000 but negotiable.

If in good condition at a negotiable $5K that could be a real deal... If the boat came from the PNW I'm pretty confidant that we're talking about the same boat. Google "SUN 838" or "Sunstar 28" and you should get a few more pics to compare.

sun yacht 27 I have a sun yacht 27. We believe this one was made n 78. Mine has a manual jib with an 8 hp Yanmar diesel. I'm only a novice sailor but we like it a lot. I agree with others that its well built and probably suitable for coastal sailing. We have had to do very little maintenance so far. We keep it in Puget Sound. Like you, I'm thrashing around for specifications. I was told the boatyard was in Bellingham Wa. and it folded years ago. We were also told their was some link to Reinell which was another local boatyard, but again; not sure. Take a close look and get a pro to do a survey. Regards

I have been looking over one for a while now here in ONtairo Canada. I know it is a SUN 28 and I did manage to get some specs etc from Spencer Yachts.. So if anyone would like me to make a PDF for you.. let me know. Also Faster made a good post in this thread to me last year http://www.sailnet.com/forums/boat-review-purchase-forum/17744-27-sun-sloop.html Yes I would agree $5000 is very fair.. boats this size and build go for $10+ out here.. but because it is little known and hard to get info.. you get a deal. James

Well no one has posted here again. Den98028.. would you be willing to share some pics of your boat? chainplates? engine compartment, galley, head, your electrical area? I am close to taking the one I am looking at.. it is a fixer upper.. but with a good hull (not cored I understand) a deck that might have 1 soft area, and a good rig with 6 sails, I think this is worth getting into. I have a fair amount of info on this boat now for those that are looking. Wchevron.. what ended up with the one you were looking at?? I have seen some excellent examples of these boats. Mine looks like it has been fresh water, and it came from the Ohio area before getting out east (LAke Ontario) to me.. Anyone want to discuss this boat more? James

Well thanks for the post mitiempo. For those with these boats, it would be nice to get some information exchanged etc. Sailnet is easy to use is already up and lets be honest there really is not enough of these boats to get an honest to goodness association going. What did people do about your windows? Anyone give me suggestions on gasket material to back the plexiglass? or did you use caulking? or what did you do? James

biker1bob, Dang, it's been a few years. I took the windows out, got the frames powdercoated and installed smoked plexiglass. Since it's not a bluewater boat, I decided against anything more expensive. But I didn't install the glass in frame. I DID caulk the crap out of the window/cabin install. I'm a novice myself and ask a bunch of questions about what to use. I think I ended up using sikaflex which is supposed to be pretty bulletproof. are the pdf's still available? ps. most of the stuff I've read about sunyachts seems to jive with what I've learned about mine (1978 27' - HAD a yanmar ysb8 but salt water ate a hole in the head)

I also have a Sun 27. I have removed all of the headliner and most of the cabinets in my mildew eradication program. Of course the head and it's smelly hoses were the first things to go (the porta potti has only been used once in three years of heavy boat use) with the giant head cabinet. Water that seaps in from the chainplates, windows, handrails... was getting caught in between the overhead and the headliner hiding leaks. The vinyl came out pretty easy but the foam that was glued to the hull was a bigger problem. Now that it's all gone and the interior has been painted the boat smells fairly neutral. Taking out the engine and putting an outboard on helped with interior smell, noise and vibration. Only the turning circle was adversly effected. When I want an oil change I place the motor in the back of my pickup and bring it to the mechanic. Overall we like this boat for general use, ours is quite a bit lighter without the inboard and all the cabinets and crap inside, we have no problem going 6.5 knots under power and full throttle pops it over 7. 13 knots with the current under the Narrows Bridge. If you use your boat as a boat and spend most of the time outside the wide sidedecks are about as good as I've seen in a lower priced 27 foot cruiser.

Here's some stats: Sun 27 Sun 28 Designed by Robert Perry.

sun yacht 27

It sure looks like Perry's Islander 28. Geo.

I have a 1978 Sun 27 Some were made near Belligham and some near Vancouver. They came with outboard, 1 cyl. Yanmar , and 2 cyl. Yanmar. Similar to a Catalina27 but much heavier built. They were NOT designed by Perry but by the young Monk. Perry drew the lines for the bow and stern for Monk who rented the first floor of Perry's little building in Seattle. I've had my boat for about 19 years or so. very sturdy and does well in the storms I've been caught in. Very well designed living space with an offset entrance. A good boat for the price. A few things I added, handholds inside the cabin. I have a 20GM Yanmar in mine now, and a Campbell 12 inch prop. Does well in the Northwest.

The vessel, a total project boat, with its condition reflective of years of exposure to the harsh elements and a lack of proper maintenance. The exterior of the boat showcases a disheartening sight, featuring a weathered hull that bears the scars of time, exhibiting significant blistering, cracks, and areas of delamination. The once-pristine gelcoat has faded into a pallid, chalky hue, and the fiberglass shows signs of osmotic damage that necessitates a meticulous restoration process. The deck, constructed with teak, has succumbed to rot and wear, with planks that are severely weathered and in dire need of replacement. The aluminum fixtures, such as the mast, rigging, and hardware, have suffered from corrosion and are showing signs of extensive wear and tear. Stepping below deck, the vessel's interior paints a disheartening picture of dilapidation. The cabin exhibits water damage and mold growth due to leaks and insufficient ventilation, leading to decayed wooden surfaces and compromised structural integrity. The upholstery, once plush and inviting, is now torn, faded, and stained, demanding complete reupholstering. The outdated electrical and plumbing systems are in dire need of replacement, posing safety hazards and functional inefficiencies. The galley and cabinetry have lost their luster, with damaged surfaces and outdated fixtures that will require extensive refurbishment. While this vessel may appear to be a daunting project in its current state, it represents an exciting opportunity for dedicated restoration enthusiasts. The challenges posed by its deteriorated condition also present the canvas for an ambitious and rewarding transformation, allowing for the resurrection of a once-beautiful vessel and the revitalization of its numerous features to their former glory. Stock #360630 Classic sailboat - ready to create great memories on the water? The 1982 Newport 27, a classic sailboat of its era, now stands as a compelling project boat awaiting a passionate restorer to breathe new life into its weathered frame. Time and the elements have left their marks, and this vessel is undeniably a total restoration project. The boat's 27-foot length offers a generous canvas for renovation, making it an exciting undertaking for those with a penchant for maritime craftsmanship. The exterior of the Newport 27 tells the story of years spent under the sun and saltwater, with faded gelcoat, peeling paint, and signs of corrosion on its aluminum fixtures. The teak deck, once a symbol of timeless beauty, now shows signs of neglect and will require extensive refinishing. The rigging and sails are likely in need of a complete overhaul, making this project ideal for sailors eager to bring back the vessel's former glory. Venturing below deck, the interior of the Newport 27 reveals a time capsule of the 1980s, complete with outdated upholstery and cabinetry that has seen better days. The electrical and plumbing systems are almost certainly obsolete, demanding a full rewiring and plumbing refit. Despite its current state, this Newport 27 holds immense potential for restoration enthusiasts, offering a blank canvas for customization and the opportunity to revive a classic sailing vessel that once navigated the seas with elegance and grace. Reason for selling is does not use it.

The 1983 Lancer 27, while retaining its nostalgic charm, shows evident signs of age and wear, indicative of its three decades of maritime service. The vessel's hull, once a shining example of fiberglass craftsmanship, now displays small areas of gelcoat crazing and fading due to sun exposure and the passage of time. The overall exterior finish has dulled, with a weathered patina that tells tales of countless voyages. The teak decking, once vibrant and rich, has aged to a silvery gray, showing signs of cracking and wear from constant exposure to the elements. The wooden accents, such as the handcrafted mahogany detailing, have dulled and experienced varying degrees of sun damage. Some wood elements may require refinishing to restore their former splendor. The boat's interior, including the cabin and helm station, shows signs of wear. Upholstery, once plush and inviting, has worn thin in places, and the cabinetry and fixtures have aged. The electrical and plumbing systems may need updating to meet modern standards. The restoration process presents an opportunity to infuse modern comfort while maintaining the vessel's classic aesthetics. Stock #359938 Affordable sailboat! Ready for some adventures on the water! The 1983 Lancer 27 is a vintage project boat that encapsulates the charm of yesteryears on the water. The boat, though showing signs of age, holds immense potential for a rejuvenation project that promises to resurrect her former glory. Embarking on this restoration journey allows you to not only preserve a piece of maritime heritage but also create a seafaring masterpiece that will turn heads once again. The Lancer 27 showcases a timeless design that pays homage to the era when boats were crafted with an unparalleled attention to detail. From her sleek, sweeping lines to the meticulously handcrafted woodwork, every aspect of the boat exudes an old-world charm that transports you back to the golden age of boating. The delicate balance between form and function is evident in the boat's layout, where every inch was optimized for comfort and performance. Despite its age, the Lancer 27 boasts a fiberglass hull structure that forms the foundation for a successful restoration. With proper attention and care, this foundation can be enhanced to meet modern safety and performance standards while retaining the vintage aesthetics that define the vessel. The 1983 Lancer 27 presents an exciting restoration canvas for individuals who relish the challenge of reviving classic boats. The project provides a unique opportunity to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. Whether it's refurbishing the elegant mahogany accents, updating the electrical and plumbing systems, or rejuvenating the interior with a tasteful touch of nostalgia, every restoration aspect is a chance to breathe new life into the boat. BOAT OWNER'S NOTES: DESCRIPTION: 1986 ODAY 272 sailboat, documented vessel, on a mooring in New Bedford, Mass. I have owned this boat for 5yrs and because of its 3ft draft and wing keel it has allowed me to slip in small inlets and anchorages. FEATURES AND EQUIPMENT: The main sale is 2yrs old and the genoa is wrapped on a CDI roller furling, new jib sheets and 150ft of chain and line, are in working order. Two type 1 PFD'S along with a life sling that ties to the rail for MOB maneuvers. For long passages the captain can use the autopilot and if the sun gets to hot you can snap on the dodger. I have sailed solo for the most part but the cockpit can seat 4 people nicely. The galley sleeps 4 adults and with a 9ft beam it is very spacious. Cushions are not worn or ripped and teak interior makes it very cozy. There are two sinks, one next to a private head and the aft sink alongside an icebox, Thirty gallon water tank and fifteen gallon waste tank make a three day cruise extremely comfy, VHF marine radio along with speed and depth gauge are mounted in the cockpit. ENGINE: The 9.9 high thrust Yamaha OB has been maintained annually with fuel filter, water pump, spark plugs and grease. This cruiser has made a round trip cruise from RI to New Bedford, Mass every year and the OB motor has never failed. Mooring on Popes Island, N Bedford is included. Feel free to call Mike @ 774-526-3645

Riversong is a 1986 Hunter 28.5’ shoal draft sailboat that is ready for day sailing or extended coastal cruising! She has a very well appointed cockpit with a Raymarine ST6002 wheel autopilot, Raymarine e7 touchscreen chart plotter with wifi, Rule Aqua compass, and more. The bimini and dodger will keep you shaded from the sun and have zip in sections to keep you dry when it rains. Swing out speaker so you can listen to music while you swim and a ladder to get you back on-board. She has an anchor with plenty of rode to keep you in place. Down below you will find a full galley with stainless sink, alcohol 2 burner stove, cooler, microwave, 1000 watt inverter, and huge dual voltage refrigerator. The salon features fold out table, seating for 6, a television with boosted antenna, dvd player, am/fm cd player with bluetooth. She can sleep 4 comfortably (2 in the v-berth and 2 in the quarter berth), or 6 if you use the salon benches. The rear quarter berth has a hanging closet and drawers. There is tons of storage everywhere. The bathroom has a sink, shower (with hot water heater), and an electric flush head. There is a big hanging closet in the head as well. There’s even a wine rack under the v-berth for storing the most important of provisions. You can enjoy all of this in the nice cool air-conditioning provided by the on-board Mermaid A/C unit. Her sails are in great shape. She comes with a main sail (with 2 reefing points) and roller furl working jib (130%). The main sheet, main halyard, and topping life were replaced in 2014. The winches are 2 speed and in great shape. She also has whisker and spinnaker poles, but no sails to go with them. Her iron jib is a Yanmar 2GM20F in great shape. The fuel pump and starter were just replaced in 2014. The house battery is also brand new, as is the dual battery charging system. She comes with many other little things like a handheld VHF radio, extra winch handles, extra line, 30 amp shore cable, hoses, etc. I will have her bottom cleaned prior to taking delivery. Welcome to the world of NONSUCH sailing: If you are familiar with the uniqueness of the NONSUCH, please procede below, if not, please Google Cruising World .com for a full review and history of NONSUCH and why it is such an incredible boat. I tried to post the full link below but EBAY forced me to remove it. If you add a www in front of the link below and cut and paste it into google search, the article should come right up. cruisingworld.com/sailboats/boat-reviews/nonsuch-30-an-utterly-uncomplicated-cruiser Caution: The reason we have not placed this boat in the water is because we want any prospective buyer to be re-assured that the boat is just as perfect below the waterline as it is topside. You can run a moisture meter anywhere you want on "Sophisti-Kat" and you will find a boat as dry as it was the day it came from the factory. Beware of any boat being sold that is already in the water and make sure to have the owner place it on “The Hard” before making your purchase so you can make sure you are getting a sound boat. Many older boats are placed in the water when being sold to hide blisters and saturated fiberglass. Now let’s get started...........please review my feedback so you can be assured that you are buying from a provider with the utmost integrity. I pride myself on only selling excellent product that buyers will be proud of for years to come. This boat is my Father's boat, he is the original owner and the boat has always been in our family. Welcome to my auction for "Sophisti-Kat" a 1985 NONSUCH 30 ULTRA. This is a very highend limited production sailboat built by Hinterholler Yachts, Ontario, Canada and designed by Mark Ellis. While there may be other NONSUCH 30's for sale on the market, this boat is extremely unique for two specific reasons: 1) Most of these boats were heavily cruised or raced; "SOPHISTI-KAT" was never cruised and was never raced. She spent most of her life on her mooring and was used for light family sailing and barbeques. The pictures clearly demonstrate this. 2) The other reason that this boat is unique is because it was purchased and built to my father's specifications meaning it is the "ULTRA" layout, not the standard layout and was equipped for global travel even though it rarely left the mooring. This boat has the upgraded bullet proof Westerbeke engine, Here is a breakdown of the boat: Overall Dimensions LOA: 30.4 Feet Beam: 11.10 Draft: 5 Feet LWL: 28.9 Displacement: 11,500 Ballast: 4500 Bridge clearance: 53 feet Headroom: 6.3 feet. It has access to the shower and Head towards the starboard side prior to the folding Doors. The Main Cabin has access to this area on the other side of the Doors. The Shower Salon and Head Areas are separated by a Shower Curtain. There is a teak seat and storage area within the Shower Salon. The Head area contains a Counter that includes a Stainless Steel Sink. Under the sink is storage space and access to the Bronze thru hull fittings. Located above the Head and Counter is a Shelf with sliding Lucite Doors for Bath Room Items Main Cabin The Galley is L shaped, and located on the Port side with a large Counter top. This area also includes a Shelf with sliding Lucite Doors to store Wine Glasses and other Galley Items. Port to the sink is the cold storage area provided by the Seafrost Refrigeration System that eliminates the need to store ice. Above this area to Port is a large shelf behind Lucite sliding Doors. It provides enough room for Dishes, Cups, Glasses, Canned products and other various supplies for meals. Aft of the cold storage area is a Gimbaled Hiller Range Stove and Oven. Forward, the Vessel has a bowsprit with rollers to accommodate two anchors, A 35 lb. CQR and 30 lb. Danforth.... Additional Equipment .includes, Fairclough Winter Cover, Fire extinguishers, fenders, life jackets, Dock lines and extra lines. "Sophisti-Kat" is an incredible find and listed for thousands below here true value. I think you will be hard pressed to find another NONSUCH 30 ULTRA even remotely close to her condition and with her equipment. 1974 C&C 35 Mark II ****SOLD September 2014

1974 C&C 35 Mark II ****SOLD September 2014

Tacoma, Washington

75 C&C 35 mk II Chinook landing marina Rigging and sails, in good condition. Universal diesel in good condition with i about 900 hrs. Many details in description in links. Complete sail inventory of 14 extra sails is available. Only known issues or repairs needed are some wind instruments not working. This a SAILING sailboat, not a floating Winnebago that sails like a bar of soap. For those interested in racing: C&C 35 Mark I's had a PHRF rating of 130, the significantly larger stock Mark II's were said by the designers to rate 125 but sail much better. The Mark II has an 11 inch greater over length, more than 2 and a half FEET longer water line length, more freeboard, and 3,300 lbs greater displacement. Later built 35 Mark III's were down sized to Mark I dimensions , are much lighter built and hardware equipped, and while fast, are a major step backwards in quality in my opinion. Currently racing Mark II's seem to measure 126 to 128 seconds. The early stock 35 mark II's were criticized by some hard core racers looking for a slow rating advantage in a very fast boat. Some thought they were tender, and did not point high enough with huge racing headsails and the standard swept back keel. A number of them were modified with a slightly heavier full fin design with more lateral area that was a huge improvement in performance and handling . We can beat and reach with J-35 boats in the 70 seconds/mile class. We have not had this boat measured, but I expect that the improved keel would penalize the rating a few seconds, small price for the performance gain. This U S Coast Guard documented, 35 foot 6 inch classic cruiser/racer sailboat is one of C & C's most graceful, best built, and best performing designs. She is competitive with much newer and larger boats costing many times her price. Re-engined with low time (690 hr) Universal 3 cylinder 25 HP diesel, professionally rewired electrical system, and new ground fault isolator. Includes 15 Barient heavy duty winches and recently rebuilt main and roller furling cruising genoa. Completely equipped for cruising or club racing this boat comes with everything needed to sail away: electronics, anchors, autopilot, extra cordage, cabin heater, cockpit cushions, life jackets, even Puget Sound charts. This boat has been well maintained and equipped for every contingency. It competed successfully twice in the Victoria to Maui race and is well known and respected in the area. The original owner had a custom keel installed with more lateral area than the stock Mk II design, giving this boat even better stability and windward performance than the standard model's exceptional ability. The last surveys are excellent, with no blisters in her solid glass hull.DRACO RED, 1974 C & C 35 FT MRK II, HULL NO. West Wight Potter 19

West Wight Potter 19

Kokomo, Indiana

What a great versatile day sailer / coastal cruiser sailboat! When I purchased this boat, I was looking for some specific things. (1) I wanted a boat that my wife would enjoy that did not heel much. Due to the shape of the hull and the hard chine, Potters tend to sail flatter (5 degrees less than other monohulls) meaning that wives will feel more comfortable and be more willing to go sailing. (2) I wanted a simpler boat and smaller sailboat, that translates into less expenses to maintain. (3) I wanted something that I could tow from lake to lake, increasing my sailing area and experiences. (4) I wanted a boat that was super easy to splash and recover off of its trailer, one that I could do by myself if need be. (5) I wanted a 'classic' that would maintain its re-sale value. I found that the Potter fit the bill completely. The boat has been sailed in primarily fresh water lakes, although a previous owner had sailed it sparingly in saltwater, but always kept it on its trailer after each sale rather than leaving it in a slip. The boat has a brand new roller furler, used about 3-4 times. The sails are nearly new, purchased by the previous owner and still very crisp to the touch. The head said has the blue sacrificial cloth to keep it protected from the sun, and the mainsail and winches have their own covers. The boat has tiller steering and a newer fiberglass rudder, with the original wooden rudder as a back up. The boat has the 'blue water layup' which means that it has a thicker hull for coastal cruising. However, the original mast raising system was removed from the boat as the po never used it, preferring to have a second person help raise the mast. I built my own system, using treated 2x4's as a gin pole which works very nicely. One person can easily raise and lower the mast, and can even do so on the water, granting access under lower bridges. The cockpit is a nice size that can easily accommodate 4 adults. The outboard is a 2013 Nissan, 6 hp, long shaft 4 stroke (burns normal gas with no oil to mix) and only has about 20 hours on it. Inside the cabin, you'll find an adequate size v-berth and 2 quarter berths that can sleep 4 adults. It has a new stove, newer battery, boat hook, life vests, anchor and rode, smoked plexiglass companionway cover in addition to the original wooden one, and a porta-potti. The trailer is a Gargas trailer and has been upgraded with all new wiring, LED tail lights, new safety chains and rollers and new wheel bearings. My intent was to tow it 1,000 miles from Indiana to Florida, and so I ensured that it was ready for any length trip. It also has a mag compass and a Hummingbird fish finder (depth gauge). While shopping specifically for a WWP 19, I drove more than 800 miles one way to look at a boat that was a 2005, priced at $11,500 ... and it was pathetic in relation to this boat! Though it is a 1996, it has been well cared for and can last its next owner a lifetime. The centerboard cranks up very easily and allows a draft as shallow as 18 inches, which means that it can be beached, or it can be extended to 3.5 feet which allows it to sail upwind satisfactorily. When I first purchased the boat, the po didn't have the bimini secured properly, and the wind sheer from the drive ripped the cloth. The frame is in perfect shape, but the canvass needs to be sewed or replaced. After spending a year searching for the right boat, which this boat was, I am now selling it because I have just recently had a major change in my sailing area. I had been sailing Lake Michigan and a local lake, but have acquire property in Florida with a mooring ball. I no longer need to trailer a boat to Fla. but can now just leave one on a mooring. I have replaced the Potter with an older Catalina 27 (1982). I have reduced the price to allow for a new canvass for the bimini. Happy hunting for your next sailboat, and hopefully, it will be my WWP 19.

One of the Russian yachts the West might seek to seize may already be in Russia, but its owner sits in a Plymouth County jail

A Sunseeker 76 yacht

Sunseeker 76 , of the type a detained Russian exec bought in 2020.

At just 77 feet long, Moscow resident Vladimir Klyushin's Seven K yacht is just slightly below the lower limit of a "superyacht," which starts around 82 feet, but it would still cut quite the figure in all but the most jaded of ports.

But unlike fellow Russian Abramovich's 456-foot superduperyacht, currently berthed in Barcelona , Klyushin's yacht, a Sunseeker 76 that he bought for nearly $4 million in 2020, might already be in Russian territorial waters - its last reported position was in Sochi, on the Russian Black Sea coast.

Although he is Russian, like many Russians with money to spend, he turned to England for maintaining an expensive asset - the boat is registered in the United Kingdom, not the Russian Federation.

Invoice for the yacht, from federal court filings:

Invoice for Klyushin's yacht

The ship has four cabins - with a fifth space that can be used as a cabin for a crew of three. It can get up to 32 knots.

Still, Klyushin hasn't had any chance to take her out for a spin since last March, when Swiss police detained him - as he was walking from a private jet he'd taken from Moscow to a private helicopter that would ferry him and his family to a ski resort - at the request of the FBI.

After losing his, and the Russian government's, appeals, he was flown to Boston in December, to be formally charged with a variety of financial crimes based on his consulting firm's alleged ability to hack into servers holding American corporate data before it was publicly released, allowing the company to make successful stock trades in the companies. Some of his underlings, who did not leave for Swiss ski trips, had earlier been indicted in US courts for their alleged roles in trying to hack the 2016 elections.

After his arrival at Logan, Klyushin was ferried to the Plymouth County Correctional Facility, which has a contract to hold people awaiting trial on federal charges.

Klyushin had asked that he be released to 24-hour detention in an apartment near the federal courthouse in the Seaport, but US District Court Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler agreed with prosecutors that Klyushin should remain locked up in the Plymouth county jail because a man with ready access to private jets and helicopters and his own yacht, who had been given an award by Vladimir Putin himself and who knew the ins and outs of international finance and travel was just too much of a flight risk - especially from an apartment just a short walk from Seaport docks.

Klyushin's lawyer had argued the Seaport apartment would make it easier for Klyushin to work on his own defense, in a case that will involve pouring over voluminous amounts of documents, many in Russian, that he would put up a London flat as security, that he would hire a private security firm to keep watch over him and that he was planning on selling the yacht anyway.

Bowler discounted all that, along with a letter from the Russian embassy in Washington that it would do nothing to help Klyushin escape the country.

Good reviews on Google

The Plymouth County Correctional Facility has 4.6 out of 5 stars.

I’m upvoting them.

My only question

is what exactly they will be pouring over those documents.

Maple syrup. They know they

Maple syrup. They know they shouldn't eat the evidence, but it's just so good.

Another Russian oligarch's yacht

Was moored in Majorca, and crewed by Ukrainians. He is the head of a weapons manufacturing company. One of the crew recognized a missile made by the company on a news report from Ukraine, and opened a couple of sea valves on the boat "partially sinking" it. The sailor was arrested, a judge released him, but he was rearrested and may be prosecuted.

[Link is to the original Spanish report. Here's one in English .]

Update: Here's a better report, from The Guardian.

It's true. Just a hole to

It's true. Just a hole to throw your money into.

That boat is the epitome

of Phallic Compensation.

I'd say Bezos's rocket beats it for the epitome

but, yeah, excessive.

Ukraine war latest: Putin wraps up China trip with subtle message for West; one dead in airstrike on Odesa

Putin has concluded his two-day visit to China with a back-handed rebuke for Western powers. A Russian airstrike killed one person in Odesa, while in Russia one person was killed while gardening close to the border, according to a local governor.

One person has been killed and another injured in a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia's Kursk region, acting regional governor Alexei Smirnov said.

It comes after a resident in the southern Russian region of Belgarod was killed by a drone while gardening on Friday (see our 7.43am post).

Russian forces launched drone attacks on two energy facilities in Ukraine overnight, according to the country's grid operator Ukrenergo.

There were no casualties and power was not cut off to customers, the company wrote on Telegram.

It did not say which facilities were attacked, but said they are in the eastern and central regions.

For context: Russia has increased its attacks on Ukrainian energy systems in recent months.

Sky News analysis of data from Ukrenergo shows in March 2024, an average of 889,000 Ukrainians were without power on any given day - the highest number since the war began in February 2022.

Ukraine's second largest city of Kharkiv has come under intensifying attacks in recent weeks.

An airstrike on Friday killed three people and injured 31 more, while at least two more people were injured in separate attacks on the region.

These photos from Reuters show the aftermath of strikes on Friday.

A close ally of Vladimir Putin has said the EU "does not tolerate" free speech after the bloc banned four more Russian media outlets (see our 7.50am post).

"The EU leadership can only talk about freedom of speech, but in fact it does not tolerate it," said Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the State Duma.

"They block any alternative point of view, destroy freedom of speech, violate the right to free dissemination and receipt of information."

Russia warned the EU's decision will result in a harsh response against Western media in Moscow, but has yet to say which media organisations it will affect.

The number of victims from a reported Russian airstrike on Friday has risen, officials say.

At least three people are now said to have died, with another 31 injured, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

It is not clear what the attack targeted.

Two more people were injured in separate attacks on Kharkiv on Friday, Mr Syniehubov wrote on Telegram.

Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, and the surrounding region have long been targeted by Russian attacks but the strikes have become more intense in recent months.

Vladimir Putin has wrapped up his trip to China by emphasising the countries' strategic ties as well as his own personal relationship with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The pair spent almost a whole day in "substantive" talks, he said.

The partnership between China and Russia "is not directed against anyone," Mr Putin said in a veiled reference to the West.

"It is aimed at one thing: creating better conditions for the development of our countries and improving the well-being of the people of China and the Russian Federation."

But he still had a back-handed rebuke for the US and others who oppose the Moscow-Beijing relationship, saying an "emerging multipolar world... is now taking shape before our eyes".

"And it is important that those who are trying to maintain their monopoly on decision-making in the world on all issues... do everything in their power to ensure that this process goes naturally," he said.

Both Russia and China have frequently spoken of the "emerging multipolar world" in response to what they view as US hegemony.

The EU has accused four Russian media outlets of spreading propaganda and disinformation about the Ukraine war and banned them from broadcasting in its 27 member nations.

The latest batch of broadcasters consists of Voice of Europe, RIA Novosti, Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta, which the EU claims are all under control of the Kremlin.

The move comes as the EU heads into parliamentary elections in three weeks.

The EU said in a statement that the four are in particular targeting "European political parties, especially during election periods".

One Russian was killed and another injured while they were gardening just inside the Russian border, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Friday.

A Ukrainian drone hit the village of Novaya Naumovka in the southern Russian region of Belgarod, Mr Gladkov wrote on Telegram.

Sky News could not independently confirm the report.

Ukraine has launched frequent drone and shelling attacks on Belgorod and other Russian regions on its border.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the Ukraine war.

Two people were killed in an airstrike on Kharkiv on Friday, with Ukrainian officials saying they expect fighting to intensify as Russia continues to attack Ukraine's second largest city.

Russia's defence ministry claimed its forces have taken control of 12 settlements in the Kharkiv region in the past week.

A person was also killed near the Black Sea port of Odesa, a frequent target of Russian attacks, with eight more injured, according to a Ukrainian official.

In other news from the past 24 hours:

  • Russia said the UK was a "de facto participant" in the war. Moscow said it holds the US and UK responsible for attacks on Russian soil because they are allowing Ukraine to use Western weapons against Russian targets;
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the situation in Kharkiv had "stabilised" as of Friday, adding their "deepest point of their advance" was 10 km;
  • Vladimir Putin claimed capturing the city of Kharkiv was not part of Russia's current plan and said Moscow intends to create a "buffer zone" for Russia's own security;
  • A Russian oil refinery was forced into emergency shutdown after a purported Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire. Sources on social media indicated a second Russian oil terminal was also hit.

We're pausing our coverage of the Ukraine war for the moment.

Frozen human brain tissue brought back to life in major breakthrough

Brain frozen in ice cube

Scientists may one day be able to freeze brains and bring them back to life following a major breakthrough in cryogenics .

Researchers in China have successfully frozen and thawed human brain tissue, after which it regained normal function.

They hope the new technique will improve ways of studying neurological conditions .

Usually, brain tissue doesn’t survive freezing and thawing – although that hasn’t stopped people paying to have either just their brains or their entire bodies cryogenically frozen in the hope of being reanimated in the future.

However, Dr Zhicheng Shao and his colleagues at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, have successfully developed a solution which can keep brain tissue alive while frozen.

The team used human embryonic stem cells to grow brain organoids – small clusters of self-organising brain cells – for three weeks, after which they developed into different types of brain cells.

They then placed the organoids in different chemical compounds they hoped may help preserve the tissue while frozen in liquid nitrogen for at least 24 hours – including sugars and antifreeze.

Brain cell close-up

After thawing the samples, the team monitored them for growth and cell death over the next two weeks. Based on the most successful, the researchers then repeated the process using different combinations of the chemical compounds, eventually finding one that led to the least cell death and most growth after thawing.

The winner is called ‘Medy’, short for the four compounds methylcellulose, ethylene glycol, DMSO and Y27632.

Further testing of Medy revealed not only that the brain organoids continued to grow for up to 150 days after thawing, but the compound was also effective for use in freezing and thawing living brain tissue. The team tested 3-millimetre cubes of brain tissue removed from a 9-month-old girl with epilepsy, and found they continued to remain active for at least two weeks after being thawed.

Writing in the journal Cell Reports Methods , the team said: ‘Fresh, viable human brain tissue with natural pathological features is a more reliable model to study neural diseases [than organoids].

‘However, with limited accessibility and manipulability, cryopreservation and reconstruction of living brain tissue with specific pathological features remain hugely challenging, as it is hard to maintain the survival of large amounts of functional neurons.

‘Therefore, it is imperative to develop reliable cryopreservation technology for fresh viable human brain tissue and for brain organoids, which can be used to study the pathological mechanisms of brain disease, organoid transplantation for brain injury, and/or drug discovery.’

Speaking to Metro.co.uk’s sister publication New Scientist , University of Birmingham professor Dr João Pedro Magalhães said he was impressed with the findings, and the solution’s ability to prevent cell death and preserve function.

‘We know brain cells are very fragile and sensitive to stress,’ he said, adding that one day the work could be ‘one small step’ towards freezing entire brains.

‘Thinking decades or centuries ahead, we can imagine patients being cryopreserved when they have a terminal condition or astronauts being cryopreserved in order to travel to other star systems,’ he said.
