Cruising to Bimini
- By Kristin Baird Rattini
- November 2, 2023
As the closest Bahamian port to the United States, Bimini is an easy and fun weekend run from South Florida for cruisers. And Bimini’s excellent sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving have given this pair of tiny islands an outsize reputation as a popular cruising destination.
Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina
Bimini is known as the sport-fishing capital of the world. Since 1936, this pioneering outfitter in Alice Town on North Bimini has hosted boats that ply the warm waters along the western edge of the Gulf Stream, where charter clients have bagged brag-worthy specimens of bonefish, billfish and tuna over the decades. The resort is just as well known for its dive center, founded in 1975 by Neal Watson, president of the Bahamas Dive Association. The resort’s lively Bimini Seafood Co. & Conch Bar is a popular spot for its weekly theme nights (including Lobster Sundays) and international sporting events on its big screens.
The Sapona Wreck
If only the weather-worn walls of the SS Sapona could talk. This wreck that’s now a navigational landmark for cruisers and a popular fishing, diving and snorkeling destination had originally been destined to serve as a cargo vessel during World War I, but its production ran longer than the war did. A Florida rum runner used the ship briefly as a floating warehouse in Bahamian waters during Prohibition until a hurricane ran it aground in 1926 just a few miles off Bennett’s Harbor in South Bimini. With a maximum depth of only 20 feet, the Sapona appeals to divers and snorkelers of all skill levels who frequently spot barracuda, triggerfish, large lobsters and many other species among the ship’s spooky, rusty remains. joe’s conch shack There’s a reason there’s usually a line at this small, open-air conch shack between Bailey Town and Resorts World. The freshness and generous portions of the conch salad—usually handmade by Joe himself—make Joe’s Conch Shack a must-stop on any Bimini itinerary. Grab a Kalik beer—especially if you liberally apply the pepper sauce to the conch salad—and enjoy this refreshing island staple along with the harbor views.
Edith’s Pizza & Bahamian Food
Lobster pizza, using the sweet local style of Bimini bread dough for its crust, is the calling card of this island favorite on King’s Highway near Bailey Town. Pick up this distinctive pie for lunch or dinner any day of the week.
Dolphin House Museum
For 30 years, this “poem in stone” has provided a touch of whimsy and artistry in Alice Town. Local author and historian Ashley Saunders assembled this three-story museum from treasures collected on Bimini’s beaches and from recycled materials around the island. Colorful mosaics line the walls, populated by pods of dolphins like the one that first inspired Saunders’ creation. The artist himself is often on-site, providing guided tours to visitors and adding new scenes to his remarkable labor of love.

Guide to Bimini
Historical Paradise
Although the Bimini Islands are among the closest Bahamian destinations to the USA mainland, they are are surprisingly quiet and tranquil.
Surrounded by stunning crystal clear turquoise waters, the Bimini islands occupy a peaceful but central location which should be high on your itinerary when exploring the Bahamas . Despite the position of the islands they do not attract as many tourists and yacht charters as many other groups of islands around the Bahamian area. This is an extra plus for you, meaning more time to do your own thing and enjoying the seclusion that comes with it.
Exploring the islands you will find many interesting connections with history, one of the famous being a freshwater well with a commemorative plaque. On more than one occasion the Bimini islands have been associated with the Fountain of Youth, as some people believe that the location of that fountain is here in the Bimini islands. As a result, many religious parties make pilgrimages to pay homage to the possible existence of the phenomenon. On the other end of the spectrum, there are also locations within the chain of islands which have ties to ancient pirate legend.
In addition to the beauty which is evident across the islands, perhaps these islands are more enticing from the water. One such spot is the Healing Hole. Filled with many nutrients and minerals including lithium and sulphur, this pool is popular with visitors to help rejuvenate the body and relax. Just as relaxing, around the coasts of the Bimini islands you can enjoy some fishing. Catch a fresh supper or try to find the smalltooth sawfish, which is one of the rarest fish in the world.
Exploring deeper in the depths of the waters, you can tick off one of the most popular shipwreck dives in this area. The SS Sapona has a colorful history which has seen her store oil, have a career as a rum runner during the prohibition and then be savagely attacked by a hurricane. Even after she was grounded, the Sapona was used by armed forces for target practice during the second world war. Ideal for all levels of divers, the wreck can be seen at only 20 feet below the surface. When visiting the wreck you will not be alone as there are hundreds of fish and even some jellyfish housed in the vicinity.
Even after ticking the SS Sapona off your list you still need to visit another sight – one which has puzzled many divers and oceanographic experts. Situated in the northern area of the Bimini islands is the attraction best known as the Stones of Atlantis. Although many theories place Atlantis in one of many locations around the globe, this particular spot is a positive contender. The arrangement of stones appears to be man-made, and it looks like it could be a path or even a segment of wall.
Take to the waters to investigate for yourself, and be sure to see all the other beautiful sights around this tropical necklace of islands. Start planning your vacation to Bimini by comparing all of the available luxury superyachts for Bahamas yacht charters .

- Distance from Miami to Bimini: 3-4 hours (50 nautical miles) going 18-24 knots
Before starting your private yacht charter to Bimini Island, The Bahamas , allow us to get you acquainted with this tiny but fascinating island. It’s divided in 3 small Islands: North, East, and South Bimini, with North and South Bimini being the largest. Also, the name is derived from these 2 Islands (Bi Mini).
The North side is only 7 miles (11km) long and 700 feet (200m) wide. You only need a golf cart to move around and enjoy the shops, restaurants, and bars.
With only 182 people living on the South side you will encounter South Bimini Airport, a few small hotels, and private homes you can rent. The island is famous for Big Game Fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling.
South Bimini is more relaxing whereas North Bimini has more activity and is recommended by us. You have options of Marinas where to dock, from Bimini Big Game Marina to Resorts World Bimini Resort and Marina.
WHAT TO SEE & DO ON BIMINI ISLANDS, BAHAMAS
SCUBA DIVING AND SNORKELING AT SS SAPONA SHIPWRECK
The SS Sapona Shipwreck was a concrete cargo vessel built by Henry Ford during WWII. In 1926 it was destroyed by a hurricane. Today it still sits on the South side of Bimini Island, 3 miles from the shore. You can reach the Sapona shipwreck by your chartered boat and enjoy snorkeling reaching 20 feet deep. The beauty of the clear ocean makes it such a splendid landmark to enjoy a variety of sea fishes and sea creatures. Feel free to take amazing pictures while jumping off the shipwreck.
For scuba diving we recommend Neal Watson Bimini Scuba Center . They are professional, patient and can accommodate divers of all levels.
Quick tips:
- not recommended for pregnant women
- have your waterproof camera or GoPro handy
- make sure you have plenty of snorkel equipment onboard
- you do not need experience to snorkel
BIG GAME FISHING
All year round in Bimini is perfect for Big Game Fishing , however there are certain seasons for specific fish like Wahoo, mackerel, white and blue marlin, tuna, grouper, snapper, and barracuda. No wonder Bimini earns the title of “ sports fishing capital of the world ”.
The best way to enjoy this trip is on a properly equipped fishing boat with a professional crew to assist you and your guests, ensuring an authentic fishing experience in Bimini.
- game fishing chart to help for certain seasonal fish
- professional fishing crew is highly recommended
- plenty of food and drinks, and sunblock
- early morning fishing is the best time
WATER ACTIVITIES
Being a small island, Bimini is surrounded by unreal turquoise waters which makes it a perfect location to relax in the sun on the pristine white beaches. Or for the more adventurous, there is also kayaking , paddle board , snorkeling , scuba diving and jet skiing . Your chartered yacht is fully equipped for water activities, but if anything is missing our crew will make sure to get it to you in no time!
GOLF CART HOP ON, HOP OFF
Bimini is so small that renting a car is neither necessary nor an option. You can make your way around North Bimini in less than 30 minutes by golf cart. There are more than 10 golf cart rental companies on the island, making it easy to rent one for the day. Do as the locals and take a short, leisurely drive to the corner store, or to eat at one of the many restaurants (pass by Bimini Big John’s Bar & Grill) , head to the beach, or try your luck at the casino. The locals are incredibly nice and welcoming, always ready to give advice for the best local food and live music. There is also a daily ferry service between North and South Bimini, though you will find more to do on the North side.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO BIMINI
Typical departure from Miami is early in the morning around 9am, for timely arrival in Bimini to clear customs ( passports needed ). You should be ready to pick up your golf cart at the marina by 2pm. We will make sure marina dockage and golf cart are reserved so you can enjoy and relax from the moment you arrive. Drive around the Island and pass by Joe’s Conch Shack have their famous conch salad and you may even catch them cleaning and prepping it (see picture below). Conch is the most famous seafood dish in Bimini so you may also want to try Stuarts delicious conch salad.
You can go around the island and stop by the beaches for a swim, stop by a shack and enjoy a local Kalik beer while enjoying the view of pastel colored wooden homes and breathe in the fresh ocean air. Once you finished exploring it’s time to go back to the marina, relax on your boat and get ready for dinner. You may choose a fancy dinner at Sabor restaurant inside the Hilton Resorts World Bimini or a local laid back option like Edith’s Pizza , which serves a lot more than pizza. Finish your night at the Casino at Hilton Resorts World Bimini. Or, if it’s a weekend, you may relax by the marina listening to live band music. Or, one of our weekend favorites is Big John’s Bar & Grill, which was just remodeled in April 2017
Let’s get the engine started and move the boat towards the area where dolphins like to hang around. If we’re lucky, you will be able to see some and even swim with them. We just ask that you keep in mind they are wild mammals and you should always take precautions.
We will mostly likely stop by the SSS Sapona Shipwreck by South Bimini, where you may enjoy amazing snorkeling . If your chartered yacht is equipped with a jet ski , this is the time to hop on one and take it around the shipwreck, jump in the water to snorkel and capture beautiful pictures to share back home.
On 2-night trips, we can take you to a private island called Cat Cay , located only 10 miles away from Bimini. Here visitors are permitted to moor for no more than 24 hours. Enjoy some fine cuisine at Nauticat Restaurant or Bu’s Bar for a more relaxed atmosphere.
The island is managed by Cat Cay Yacht Club and non-members may only visit accompanied by members. For a private tour for membership inquiries or more information, please visit their website.
CHOOSING A BOAT
Now let’s choose the perfect boat for you . It all depends how many guests are joining you and if you are planning to sleep on the boat or in a hotel.
We can help you choose from a medium size vessel like a 54’ Sea Ray Sundancer with 2 rooms or a 64’ Azimut with 3 staterooms. For fishing aficionados, we have a 50’ or a 60’ Hatteras fishing boat so you can enjoy Big Game Fishing.
Do you have a bigger budget in mind? We recommend a 75’ Sunseeker Manhattan which is ultra comfortable and luxurious equipped with all the amenities you may need. If you decide you rather stay overnight in a hotel than your chartered vessel, we can recommend one of our partner’s resorts.
Fishing charters are permitted for no more than 6 guests by law.
45′ Sessa C44
55′ Sea Ray 510 Fly
54′ Sea Ray 500 Sundancer
40′ Van Dutch

SOUTH FLORIDA SEASONS
Here in South Florida, we are fortunate to have almost perfect weather all year round – making it possible to enjoy a boating, yachting, sailing or fishing trip at any given moment!
During the Summer, we have a short period of hot and humid weather, with temperatures from the mid-80s to low-90s (29–35° C) and occasional afternoon rain showers. This combination creates the perfect conditions for swimming, sunbathing, and ice-cold mojitos.
Winter temperatures average 69.2° F (20.7° C) during the day and 50° F (10° C) at night, making it the preferred time of the year for tourists from up north to escape the cold and soak up the sun while enjoying the cool, dry air. It’s truly the most wonderful time of the year.

18 Photos of The Bimini Beach Club & What Cruisers Should Expect
Doug Parker
- November 26, 2021
When it was announced the cruise ships would start calling to Bimini Island in the Bahamas, it garnered a lot of interest.
After all, up until this point, cruisers in the area have been limited to Nassau, Freeport, or the various private destinations run by the lines.
There’s been a bit of confusion among some cruisers given that Virgin Voyages has made a lot of noise about their private, exclusive Bimini Beach Club… which some pointed out seemed to be part of the Resorts World complex.
As it turns out, they are essentially at the same complex. However, Virgin Voyages’ guests have access to a private beach and amenities that are only available to them on days when the company ships in port.
Thus, it’s not at all uncommon for ships from various cruise lines — including Carnival, Holland America, Disney, and others — to offer shore excursions to the Bimini Beach Club that are separate from what’s offered by Virgin Voyages.
So what can cruisers expect to find at the commonly used areas of the Bimini Beach Club?
On a clear day, you’re able to see all kinds of sea life upon your ship’s arrival at Bimini Island, including dolphins that often greet the ship and curious giant sea turtles in the distance.
The water is that Caribbean blue that, until you see it in person, you’d swear can only be achieved with Instagram filters.
When you walk off the ship, you are greeted by a Resorts World tram that will take you down to the Resorts World properties and beach club.
If you don’t want to check out Resorts World, you can walk off the pier and take a right. That will take you into the more authentic area of Bimini, where you’ll find local restaurants, dive shops, and a variety of unique shops.
The Beach Club is a little less than a mile away from the pier. It is walkable, but it would be fairly easy to lose your way… plus, why walk when transportation is available? Save your energy for the taxing day of lounging and sipping cocktails you have ahead of you!
Even though cruise lines other than Virgin use the facilities, they are still branded for Virgin Voyages, including the Rock Star retreat, which is a play on the Rock Star suites you’ll find onboard Scarlet Lady and her sisters.
The club does request that guests wear face masks when not swimming or eating/drinking, but it wasn’t strictly enforced in the outdoor areas where there is plenty of space for natural social distancing.
There are two pools at the Bimini Beach Club. The one on the south side is the family pool, while the other is reserved for guests 18 and over. (Obviously, this isn’t an issue when Virgin ships are in port, as their ships only carry those who are over the age of 18.)
There are plenty of loungers, clamshells, and umbrellas around the pool. One thing there’s not a lot of unless you happen to be under one of those umbrellas, is shade.
The aerial shot below shows just how expansive the Beach Club really is, with the two pools forming its heart and plenty of white sand beach nearby.
The adults-only pool usually features a DJ spinning tunes for the entertainment of guests.

Obviously, a wide variety of drinks put the “club” in “Beach Club.”
Here, they run the gamut from the Piña Colada and Mudslide to the Mr. Zombie (which — given that it includes gin, vodka, tequila, and white rum — might leave you feeling like one of the undead the next morning!).
The drinks at the club were $12 each, and there was a slew of servers constantly roaming the pool and beach areas to take orders — no need to get up from your lounger.
There’s both a restaurant and a walk-up snack bar with things like burgers and chicken strips. You’ll find plenty of tables to eat your lunch, so you don’t have to bring it back to the beach or the pool, but you’re welcome to do that as well.
If you’re in the pool and suddenly have a craving for a cocktail, never fear… each of the pools has a swim-up bar, making it easy to quench that thirst.
The beachfront property features a large strip of white sand and blue water. The shore itself is not at all rocky, so you won’t feel the need to slip into a pair of water shoes before wading in.
You will, however, want to ensure you have plenty of sunscreen because, as you can see, the beach — like the pool — isn’t a place where you’ll find a lot of shade!
There are open day beds for guests to enjoy at the beachside and even a fire pit that’s used at night.
Final Thoughts of Bimini Beach Club
It’s easy to see why more and more cruise ships are making calls on Bimini and the beach club. While it has quite a bit in common with some of the private destinations already visited by ships, it’s different enough to give cruisers another beach worth exploring.

Lauderdale Yacht Club’s "Bimini Blast" Returns to the Big Game Club
Posted in General , Art , Bass Fishing | Leave a comment
By GHO Admin
ALICE TOWN, BIMINI—SEPTEMBER 2, 2010 – Not since Junkanoo has the tiny island of Bimini—just over 50 miles from the Southeast Florida mainland— seen such a fun-filled weekend as the “Game On” Bimini Blast hosted recently by the members of the Lauderdale Yacht Club.
Held at the newly re-opened Bimini Big Game Club, a Guy Harvey Outpost Resort and Marina, the four-day fishing and family-oriented Bimini Blast was a return to a traditional Bahamas outing for the 1,000-plus member Lauderdale Yacht Club, which was first established in 1938.
Some 140 guests, many arriving in a flotilla of 32 boats ranging from 23 to 75 feet, partied hardy to the island music and sounds of Mango Man, and enjoyed many activities, including their annual Offshore Fishing Tournament, kids dockside fishing fun and conch shell painting, a visit to the world-famous Bimini Biological Station’s Shark Lab, the “Splish Splash” pool party and traditional Bimini Blast LYC group photo, a “Big Fish” tattoo contest, the “Game On” best meat BBQ Cook-off competition, plus other local outings …all interacting with the general laid-back ambiance offered only in Alice Town, the cultural hub of the island.
Lauderdale Yacht Club member and a Bimini Blast co-organizer Jennifer M. Saia said the club has over the years traditionally held its summer membership event in Bimini, often at the Big Game Club, which was established in 1936. Per the 2010 Bimini Blast Committee Co-Chairs, Lance Lehman and Tripper White, the LYC Event dates back to 1984 when it’s first outing was held with only five boats in attendance at the Big Game Club. Subsequent years have seen attendance as high as 70 boats and 300 people.
After a five year hiatus, the Lauderdale Yacht Club returned to Bimini with its annual blast event last year staying at the Bimini Bay Resort, but switched to the Big Game Club this season after learning about its re-opening with new management this summer.
“The Big Game staff was great and the newly revamped accommodations and facility were terrific,” said Saia, who added that the LYC has already scheduled its 2011 Bimini Blast at the Big Game Club for June 23-26 with the hopes to bring the attendance back to record numbers of boats and guests!

Board your yacht in Fort Lauderdale on this 5 day yacht cruise and enjoy an evening on board or relax in the hot tub under the royal palms before cruising. You are bound for Hemingway’s legendary Islands in the Stream.
5 Days / 4 Nights Round Trip Fort Lauderdale to Bimini, Bahamas
Day 1: Now you are in the Yachting Capital of the World. Please enjoy the many options available from relaxing at the dock to cruising the waterways, maybe a sunset cruise or out to dinner… Or even Horsdouvers on the Bridge with your guests, the Captain usually has some special treats. Remember the spa is waiting under the Royal Palms at The Resort just in case you want to indulge yourself later. Settle in an secure your gear as we are available to start as early or as late as you wish the next day.
Day 2: Departure time 0800-1000 Hrs. Refresh yourself with an early swim at the beach or a little kayaking if you like. Either way, we are off on another exciting voyage to Bimini – Hemingway’s “Island in the Stream” and the Gateway to the Bahamas. Perched at the edge of a sheer underwater cliff that falls thousands of feet into the blue abyss, Bimini is the Family Islands’ favorite diving and fishing outposts.
As we launch off towards the Gulf Stream, see how many shades of blue water you can name. Sightseeing and big game fishing is in order as Port Everglades grows smaller on the west horizon. Lunch is served al fresco on deck before we tie up at our island marina and your island adventure begins. This evening, dine overlooking the ocean at one of Bimini’s waterfront restaurants where fresh island lobster, peas and rice, or maybe conch chowder are served up Bahamian style.
Day 3: Start the off a day of exploring Bimini. There’s snorkeling, beaches, and island historic sites to absorb. Perhaps a kayak visit to the healing hole—nature’s hot tub in the mangroves, or the real “Fountain of Youth.” Visit the site of the former Complete Angler, Hemingway’s old house, or the Bimini Big Game Club. Venture out on foot to find a roadside stand and don’t miss having a fresh conch salad made to order! Tonight party to live island style music with a tropical rum punch or two.
Day 4: We push off back to the mainland. Our course is another Gulf Stream crossing back to the Yachting Capital of the world before we tie up for the night at Coconut Bay, our home port for one last night on board. If we have a little luck fishing, just maybe your crew will prepare a special seafood dinner (obviously with your fresh catch of the Day), or there is always a multitude of choices for dinner all within steps of our docks at Coconut Bay. Again, a swim at the beach or some kayaking may be in order before dinner. As the stars begin to shine brighter, the night life along Ocean Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale is heating up again just a short stroll away along our beautiful Beach Walk.
Day 5: There’s time for one last swim or a little more kayaking before your Departure at 1000 Hrs. It has been a pleasure having you aboard!

A Hamptons-Maldives Mashup Is Coming to the Caribbean
(Bloomberg) -- Wall Street South is getting its Hamptons, and it’s not West Palm Beach.
Developer Rafael Reyes, owner of Rockwell Island Development Group, is building an oasis on the Bahamian island of Bimini just 48 nautical miles off the Florida coast to serve the increasing number of moneyed professionals that call Miami home. The South Florida hub now ranks 33rd worldwide in its number of millionaire residents .
If you are among the estimated 4 million Miamians that have boats, according to Reyes, you could make the crossing in as little as 40 minutes. A high-speed ferry should take about that long, too; commonly available ferries take 90 minutes. Hop a helicopter with a local charter company like HeliFlite, and you’ll be there in 25 minutes, quicker than driving almost anywhere on Miami’s traffic-clogged I-95.
The catch is that not much exists yet in Bimini, not by five-star standards. Reyes is changing this as quickly as possible.
First, he’s building a series of dining and beach clubs, including an outpost of Bonito, which runs the renowned spot by the same name in St. Barts and its sister restaurant Betula in Aspen, Colorado. Next will come a series of 54 waterfront mansions with prices to list upward of $3.5 million, each with a pool, 90-foot-plus dock and garages custom-built to fit Moke jeeps ; the first are to be completed in early 2025. A beach club by Richard Branson to cater to guests of his Virgin cruise line joins the party nearby.
The pièce de résistance is due in 2026: a Banyan Tree resort with the country’s first overwater villas, priced from $3,000 per night, on a series of four man-made islands facing a giant lagoon.
All this will be part of a new master-planned community called Rockwell Island. Including all infrastructural investment, it will cost roughly $245 million, including $80 million in public-private funding to help expand Bimini’s airport and make it directly accessible via major US airlines.
Putting Bimini on the Yachting Map
“Bimini used to be a very popular place in the old days,” Reyes explains, harking back to Ernest Hemingway and Prohibition, when the island was the closest land mass off the East Coast for Americans to escape alcohol restrictions. “Those were the glory days of Bimini,” he continues. “I’m trying to reestablish that now.”
The island is small—five square miles surrounded by shallow and clear waters. Since the 1990s, Reyes’ company, a subsidiary of RAV Bahamas Ltd. , has bought up more than half of it. In that time he’s built a seaplane port, helipads and the ferry terminal through which the island gets twice-weekly produce deliveries and supplies from the mainland US. In addition, he’s built the largest marina in the Bahamian “Family Islands”—basically, the entire archipelago minus New Providence Island, where the capital Nassau sits—with 242 slips. (The marina within the ultra-luxury Albany resort community on New Providence offers only 71.)
“You have all these people bringing their ships and mega yachts from the Med each year,” Reyes says. “So how do we attract them?” The answer, he believes, is all about ease. “You attract them by creating an extravagant food and beverage experience—and then sending a tender to pick them up from wherever they dock offshore.”
In addition to Bonito, which will open this summer, he intends to build an additional two or three restaurants down the line, with details still being finalized. “They will be similarly familiar names,” he says, adding that one will be a toes-in-the-sand beach bar with high-end Italian food. While Banyan Tree won’t be fully finished for a few years, it will open in phases, prioritizing an overwater spa and restaurants that can service residents and the yacht crowd.
A World-Class Resort
The Banyan Tree resort will comprise 50 rooms and villas, mostly fashioned to look like floating ivory jewel boxes with outdoor living areas and private plunge pools. The main pool and restaurant will also be built on stilts, its entire length jutting out over the ocean.
Gabriel Gn, Banyan Group’s head of business development, says the Bimini resort is to be a flagship, a cornerstone of the brand’s push into the Americas. Banyan Tree rebranded in January as Banyan Group in order to better compete with such behemoths as Marriott and Hilton. It counts a dozen hotel brands and withBanyan, a new loyalty program, plus an expansion pipeline of 19 hotels and residences set for this year.
“Bimini is going to be one of the most beautiful properties in our entire portfolio—a mini Maldives ,” Gn continues, adding that the brand was such an early developer in the Maldives that its resort there predated the trend toward overwater accommodations. “This is actually Banyan Tree’s first resort with overwater bungalows,” he adds.
Accomplishing this in the Caribbean is a tall order. In terms of big brands, only Sandals , the all-inclusive stalwart, has managed to persuade Caribbean governments to allow the construction of these types of rooms—in Jamaica and St. Vincent. A tiny handful of small, independent resorts pursue this style in Mexico, Antigua and Belize; none offer the lavishness of those in the Maldives, and it’s debatable as to whether they are truly “overwater.”
Read more: Sandals Resorts Bets Big on Luxury With $8,000-a-Night Rooms
“We actually took a delegation of the Bahamian tourism officials to the Maldives to try to convince them many, many years ago to do this,” Reyes says. The reason so few overwater bungalows exist in the region, he says, is because governments fear that the excavation and structural support required to build them will endanger delicate coastlines.
For their parts, Gn and Reyes say overwater construction is being handled as sensitively as possible. Any coral removed has been transplanted onto coral frames; they hope to move these artificial reefs so that they’ll be visible from the bungalows’ glass floors. Lighting is being designed to avoid disturbing the wildlife, and Reyes is leaving a portion of land undeveloped as a buffer zone for a mangrove forest that helps sustain the island’s marine life and fishing industry.
Reyes says that he’s worked hard to build infrastructure that will benefit local communities, including water treatment and electrical power plants to supply the entire island. Some 200 jobs will be created at the Banyan Tree resort and the surrounding restaurants. Still, it’s hard to believe that much of what Reyes envisions will cater to Bahamian locals.
“When New Yorkers take off in a seaplane or helicopter,” he says, “they go to the Hamptons. I’m trying to create that same concept in a Caribbean fashion, OK?” With some Maldivian style to boot.

Meet ‘Home,’ the Sleek 164-Foot Superyacht That Starred in ‘Below Deck’
The 164-footer was not only the backdrop for the reality series but also has hybrid propulsion and a "50 shades of white" interior., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

The 164-foot motor yacht Home was Heesen’s first hybrid yacht when it delivered in 2017. It was also the first yacht to combine hybrid propulsion with a Fast Displacement Hull Shape (FDHF), which is proven to outperform conventional hull forms at all speeds. Built in lightweight aluminum, Home delivers 48 percent more fuel efficiency than other yachts of the same size.
Another perk of the hybrid propulsion package is reduced noise and vibration. Sensory expert Barry Smith, founder of the Centre for the Study of the Senses, discovered that the enjoyment of fine dining and wine while cruising in electric mode is significantly enhanced.
“Our research has shown that the brain’s processing of taste is affected by noise, which reduces the tongue’s ability to detect salt, sweet and sour,” says Smith. “The beauty of Home is the ability to run at a sound of around 46 decibels—the sound level of softly falling rain—enabling those on board to enjoy food and drink with no diminution of taste.”
Home began as a speculation build by the shipyard, before the American owner stepped in to the project. The initial interior was not to his liking, so he engaged Italian designer Cristiano Gatto to rework the design. He mandated simplicity, rather than minimalism. He also requested decor inspired by his residences, reflecting their contemporary Ibiza style. One perfect example: The slinky metal chaise lounge in the main salon by Italian designer Franco Poli.
Here are 10 facts about one of the world’s first hybrid yachts.
Star of the Med
Home ’s fortune took a sharp turn in 2022 when it became the star of the seventh season of Below Deck Mediterranean . Filmed in Malta, the reality series followed its crew over an eight-week charter season, with Captain Sandy Yawn at the helm. Unlike most yachts on Below Deck, Home retained its real name on screen. It was the first diesel-electric motor yacht to appear on the show, and in typical style, the producers added a dancing pole to the sundeck to spice up the onboard antics.

Home takes the trend for neutral interiors to a whole new level. Alongside a color palette of black and gray with pops of deep red, the yacht features 50 shades of white, from off-white to ivory. The original owner mandated an interior that gave him a “home away from home”—hence the yacht’s name. Low-slung sofas and bespoke loose furniture create a relaxed and welcoming beach club ambience. The vessel’s teak flooring and full-height glass windows blur the distinction between inside and out.
Party Lounge
One of Heesen’s signature areas is an upper-deck sky lounge. Home ’s casual bean bags, daybeds, and stark-white bar with LED strip lighting provide a natural extension to the alfresco dining terrace. When the doors to the aft deck are shut and the furniture removed, a mirror ball and a smoke machine are added turning the area into a dedicated party room for nighttime use.
A Dreamier Shade of Pale
Full-height windows in the full-beam, main deck owner’s suite bounce natural light off the paler-than-pale color scheme. The off-white bed, rug, walls, and ceiling are offset with a sky-blue bed throw. There is a dressing room, an en suite with shower and a private office. There’s also a full-beam VIP cabin on the lower deck, as well as two double cabins and two twin cabins to accommodate 12 guests, including families.
Moody Sundeck
Home ’s sundeck is the hub of the boat. There are sun lounges forward with privacy glass safety screens to shelter guests from sea spray and wind. Beneath the hardtop bimini is a large sit-up bar and lounge area, which also doubles as an outdoor dining area. The bar lights up in soft pastel shades at night to bring the party atmosphere. Aft is a Jacuzzi, while a projector and a screen set-up transform the deck into an outdoor cinema.
On the Nose
The yacht is easily spotted on the horizon, thanks to its distinctive plumb bow. The vertical front increases Home ’s waterline length, helping it to slice through waves and lift in rougher water. It guarantees a smoother and faster ride for guests, as well as creating more room on the interior for crew accommodations. For a more immersive journey, a telescopic seat on the foredeck rises from the bow for 360-degree views.
Sea Terrace
A central staircase on the main deck aft leads down to an oversized swim platform that doubles as a sea-level sun lounge. With plenty of room for daybeds and sunrise yoga sessions, it’s the perfect waterside hang out.
The Athletic Club
The lower-deck gym is a full-beam, air-conditioned space for guests to sweat it out. It’s kitted out with a range of equipment, including a workout bench, Techno Gym dumbbells, an exercise bike, and a rowing machine. When guests are done with their workout, they’re just a few steps from the sea for the ultimate plunge to cool off.
The Electric Package
The twin 805 hp MTU engines (smaller than those typically fitted on a yacht of this size) can be operated in four different cruising modes: hybrid (with noise levels in the owner’s stateroom measuring as low as 46 decibels), economic, cruising (consuming as little as 12 gallons per hour at 9 knots), and boost, which pushes the boat to a top speed of 16.8 knots.
Fast, Efficient Hull
At the time of launch, Home was the first yacht to combine the super efficiency of an FDHF hull, designed by Van Oosenan Naval Architects, with hybrid propulsion. The combination was celebrated with a RINA green award presented by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.

In conversation with Adrian Newey and Eddie Jordan
Oyster Yachts hosted an exclusive interview during the weekend of the Historic Monaco Grand Prix, at the Yacht Club de Monaco.
Taking centre stage in front of an audience of F1’s greatest names – including former World Champion driver Mika Häkkinen and McLaren Racing CEO Zac Brown – the pair discussed the future of Newey’s career both on and away from the Formula 1 track.
In a candid conversation moderated by Newey’s good friend and manager Eddie Jordan, they delved into his remarkable F1 career, why he chose Oyster to build his dream Oyster 885 sailing yacht and approached the obvious and hot question of the minute – “What next?”
Reflecting on the future, Newey expressed a desire to continue pushing engineering and personal boundaries past retirement age, drawing inspiration from motorsport legends like Bernie Eccleston and Roger Penske. He said: “I feel a bit tired at the moment… But at some point, I’ll probably go again”
While addressing the decision to transition away from the fast-paced trackside life of Red Bull Racing’s F1 team, towards a slower pace of life sailing on board his bluewater Oyster 885 sailboat, Jordan emphasised a phenomenal career track record of twenty-five wins – 13 Drivers and 12 Constructors World Championships to date.
The pair drew parallels between their hobbies, expressing a love of sailing as Eddie Jordan also owns a luxury bluewater sailing yacht – the Oyster 495. Newey described the “purity of sailing” and its allure, with the potential for personal rejuvenation away from the high-stakes environment of motorsport.
In our film Adrian Newey, Building My Oyster , Newey discusses the rationale behind choosing the Oyster to build his bluewater sailboat. He said “I’ve got to the age now where I’ve really fancied spending time sailing and properly developing it as a hobby and a passion… [it’s] something I can take forward as I start to have a little bit more time available” and described choosing the Oyster 885 as “relatively easy choice” and one “that ticked all the boxes”.
With his stellar career background in design and engineering, Newey had significant involvement in elements of the boat design. Working alongside Oyster experts, he implemented structural changes to add space to the swim platform and also designed a hard-top solar bimini. He admits: “one of the more time-consuming choices for us was how we wanted to do the interior… trying to come up with something that we will be happy to live with for weeks or months at a time.”
Returning to his career in motorsport, he said: “The beauty about motor racing is that there’s only two things that count – how quick it is and whether it’s reliable or not. Building a live-aboard sailing yacht is much more subjective in terms of the overall pleasure versus performance and useability.”
