Boat of the Week: This Rule-Breaking 95-Foot Superyacht Is Like a Two-Story Penthouse for the Water

The Princess X95 from the UK has more space than a much larger yacht thanks to its design by Pininfarina

When it comes to the polarizing, head-spinning design of Princess Yachts ‘ brand-new 95-foot, tri-deck X95, there are no half-measures, no in-betweens. You either love it. Or loathe it.

That blunt, towering, two-story bow, the mile-high, top-floor skylounge, the Jacuzzi teetering high on the foredeck. Bold and dramatic, without a doubt. Sleek and elegant, arguably not so much.

But the X95’s design brilliance is in its impressive internal volume with huge living, lounging and entertaining spaces on three levels. Claimed to have 40 percent more interior space than a typical 95-footer, there’s room for a small army of friends and family to stretch out in this glass-encased, floating penthouse.

To find out whether space over style works, Robb Report marine editor Michael Verdon and I stepped aboard this ground-breaking new Princess for an exclusive tour during last month’s Palm Beach International Boat Show.

“It re-writes the rules of yacht design,” says our tour guide, Stefano Luppi, senior designer with Pininfarina. The famed Italian studio teamed up with the Princess Yachts designers and longtime naval architect Olesinski Design, to deliver what Luppi calls “a complete rethink” of yacht architecture.

“The design challenge was combining all this interior volume with an exterior that was striking and unique, yet clearly a Princess,” says Luppi. “We did this by incorporating beautifully sculpted surfaces and long flowing lines, like the one from the top of the sky lounge down to the deck.”

Even just stepping aboard shows the design revolution the X95 has created. The retractable swim platform is the biggest, most complex ever by the Italian equipment maker Opacmare. Nicknamed the “transformer,” it can lower into the water to launch a one-ton tender. Or raise up, exposing a series of steps, to make getting on and off a high dock a breeze.

But it’s when you take the steps up to the main deck that the X95 really starts to make sense. It’s a true open-plan concept, with wide sliding doors opening the deck area into the huge salon. Floor-to-ceiling windows as you’ve never seen on a 95-footer flood the space with light.

This particular X95—hull number three and destined for a buyer in Puerto Rico—features a separate, enclosed and beautifully finished galley, though Princess expects most U.S. customers to opt for a more family-friendly, full-beam, open-plan kitchen.

Typically at the forward end of this level, you’d have the helm station, but not on the X95. Instead, there’s a spacious master suite featuring huge windows on three sides.

But what really sets the interior design of the X95 apart is its new upper sky-lounge and deck. Luppi says it’s his favorite feature, and it is hugely impressive. Covering almost the entire length of the yacht, it provides expansive outdoor entertaining space, a cozy air-conditioned salon, and an open helm that can be partitioned off.

The outdoor rear deck has space for a multitude of sofas and sun loungers, a table for 10, and a bar area. And it’s all protected by the yacht’s high-mounted handrail with lower panels of tinted glass.

Stroll around the wide upper deck to the bow area, and there’s that Jacuzzi with plenty of lounging pads around it, offering the best view in the house when under way. Belowdecks, there’s a full-beam double cabin—to some owners, this is the preferred master suite—plus two or three twin-berth cabins with the option to turn any of them into a gym, library or office.

“The beauty of X95 is that its interior is defined by large, adaptable spaces that can be used and formatted in many ways. It makes for a uniquely flexible boating lifestyle,” says Luppi.

And impressive, even for a yacht with a $12 million price tag, is the astonishing level of fit and finish. The craftsmanship that goes into the woodwork, furniture and cabinetry is world-class.

The rounded shape of the bow may not appeal to every boater, but it allowed the designers to add significantly more interior volume to the boat.  Courtesy Princess Yachts

Olesinski’s design for the X95’s new composite hull features a wave-piercing bow that extends the yacht’s waterline and improves fuel efficiency.  Fin stabilizers and a 22-foot beam should hopefully balance out the yacht’s towering height to dampen any rock and roll.

Its twin 1,900-horsepower V12 MAN diesels give the X95 a top speed of 28 mph. Throttle back to a more relaxed 12 mph and the 3,540-gallon fuel tanks deliver a range of over 2,000 miles.

As for that polarizing exterior, the saying goes that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Marine Editor Verdon is a fan, saying that the X95’s bold style takes Princess design in an impressive new direction. Daring to be different is good, he reckons, even if it’s not a crowd-pleaser.

Controversial design or not, with Princess Yachts reportedly having already sold a dozen X95s, this spacious mini- superyacht shows that daring to be different is worth the risk.

Princess Yachts Y72 Reviewed

  • By Chris Caswell

Princess Yachts Y72

The Gulf Stream was cranky after a 40-knot cold front had blown through the previous day, leaving a confused sea. Even so, the Princess Yachts Y72 cruised across the angry ocean at 34 knots, up sea and cross sea. There were no teeth-jarring slams—just a welcoming, soft ride. And, just as good, nary a creak or squeak from anywhere aboard.

The good sea manners of the Y72 are certainly the result of naval architect Bernard Olesinski’s background of racing powerboats in the English Channel, a body of water with even fewer benign days than the Gulf Stream. Ferrari designers Pininfarina pitched in on the yacht’s exterior lines.

The Y72’s detailing and small touches are superyacht-level, from the stitched Livorno Stone leather countertops to the redundant air-conditioning systems neatly racked in the engine room.

At the stern, a hydraulic swim platform can lift a Williams Sportjet 395 tender , and there’s a waist-level stowage locker with charging ports for Seabobs. A passerelle is hidden in the portside stairs to the aft deck, where a U-shaped dinette with a table awaits.

Princess Yachts Y72

The galley is aft in the salon with a lifting window that opens to the cockpit. This window is the first clue that the Y72 balances an elegant interior with alfresco fun. The galley is a step down, allowing for a full-height fridge, and an aft-facing, L-shaped dinette is opposite to include cockpit guests. Forward, the salon is geared for family entertainment, with a 55-inch pop-up TV and two sofas.

The skipper is on a raised dais for unobstructed visibility, facing triple monitors that include a touchscreen Boening for all ship’s systems. This Y72 also had Garmin’s Surround View camera system , which enables 360-degree views to help with docking. The twin helm seats are very Aston Martin, with diamond stitching and headrests, and a pantograph door allows the skipper to step onto the side deck, handle lines and communicate with crewmembers. Opposite the helm is a raised settee for guests, with a swing-out table for drinks or a laptop.

Another mega-yacht feature is the private stairwell to the full-beam master stateroom. The en suite head is aft, providing an extra layer of soundproofing from the engine room. A leather-topped vanity is to port, and a love seat is opposite with hull-side windows for light and ocean views. Headroom is 6 feet, 4 inches. A dressing area has closets and dressers, while the head has twin vanities and a shower.

Princess Yachts Y72

Throughout the Y72, design cues from its larger siblings tie the decor together, including vertical wood slat effects, walnut paneling and linen wall coverings.

Forward, via separate stairs from the salon, are the guest staterooms, including an island VIP berth in the bow with an en suite head. Two additional staterooms have twins that slide into doubles. Aft, accessed from the transom or via a deck hatch, is a crew cabin with two berths, a head and stowage.

In fact, stowage is one thing that impressed me throughout this yacht: Every cranny under sofas or berths or behind bulkheads is viable stowage.

Princess Yachts Y72

Up on the flybridge is a dining table with a removable center section, so those seated inside can leave. A wraparound settee is opposite the twin-seat helm. A wet bar with a grill, sink, fridge and ice maker serves the area. The aft deck has a sun pad that can be replaced with a davit for a tender or a spa. Overhead on this Y72 was an optional hardtop with a louvered sunroof.

Follow the superyacht-style oval rails forward to the foredeck, and guests will find a third alfresco space, where a convertible sun pad offers bronzing or seating to encircle the dining table.

The engine room is reached via the crew quarters and through a generator flat. Inside are a pair of 22.5 kW Onan gensets (one is standard) and the hydraulics package. Room is allotted for a Seakeeper stabilizer, but the yacht I got aboard had Sleipner Vector Fins. Standard power for the Y72 is twin 1,400 hp MAN V-12 diesels. The Y72 I got aboard had optional 1,650 hp MAN diesels.

Underway, the Y72 shouldered aside the Gulf Stream with impunity, and it’s here that I found the Vector Fins particularly useful. The faster we went—up to a top speed of 34 knots—the smoother the ride. At 27 knots, the decibel meter registered 70 in the salon. That’s about the equivalent of a dishwasher.

The Princess Yachts Y72 is the smallest in the builder’s Y range, which also includes 78-, 85- and 95-foot models, but it punches angry seas far above its weight while offering owners and guests superyacht-level living inside and out.

Seeing is Relieving

Garmin Surround View steals a page from automotive park-assist systems but goes one better. This 360-degree and bird’s-eye view uses six 1080p cameras mounted through the yacht’s hull. Feeds from those cameras are stitched into a helm display for total situational awareness when docking or maneuvering (read: no blind spots). A “bumper zone” can be set to assist the skipper, and distance markers allow skippers to make decisions easier. With full night vision, this video guidance is a breakthrough. It can also serve as a warning system against unseen objects and debris in the water.

Stable as a Table

Princess Y72 owners have a choice between the Seakeeper gyrostabilizer and Sleipner Vector stabilizing fins. There is room allotted for the Seakeeper in the generator lazarette, but the Y72 I got aboard had the Sleipner fins for full roll control, even at top speed in rough water. The curved Sleipner fins are said to be 50 percent more efficient than flat fins and are efficient at anchor. The advanced hydrodynamic fin shape has less resistance, helping to reduce fuel consumption.

The Princess Yachts Y Class: Yachts of Distinction

Thursday 9th March 2023

As a line of sub-100-foot mini superyachts, each of the four Princess Y Class yachts is designed to deliver cruising at its most cultured. With exquisite materials, meticulous detailing and large, open spaces bathed in natural light, guest comfort is unashamedly high-end.  And with first-class seakeeping, high-volume internal capacity and a variety of living and dining spaces, practical long-distance cruising is also a major strength.

Princess Yachts has long been famous for the creation of midsized flybridge cruisers that combine great internal space with proven hulls and premium luxury.  But with a modern fleet spanning 21 boat models across six product lines from 40 to 95 feet, its modern fleet is in fact tremendously diverse.  The R35 open sports boat is the smallest and fastest model in the fleet.  Above that, the V Class transfers plenty of pace and agility into the luxury cruising sector.  The iconic F Class flybridge motor yachts add extra space from 40 to 62 feet, before the S Class takes up the mantle, with a range of ‘sportbridge’ motor yachts from 62 to 78 feet.  And while the new expedition-style X Class has brought fresh opportunities at 80 and 95 feet, the imperious Y Class remains a crystal-clear expression of Princess’s inherited strengths.

Princess Y72: for ‘big boat’ luxury

Introduced in the summer of 2020, this smallest of the Y Class yachts is an object lesson in on board decadence. It uses an Olesinski exterior design that is defined not by flat two-dimensional surfaces but by elegantly sculpted three-dimensional forms. Though arguably less ostentatious in appearance than other sub-100-foot ‘superyachts’, it also features full-length windows that echo those on the new Y95 flagship, plus a flybridge that provides the option of an extended hardtop with a stylish louvered roof.  The foredeck sunbathing area can be converted to include forward or aft-facing seats and, while the sociable helm is ideal for owner-operator use, there is also a twin ensuite crew cabin that doubles as an extra guest room. This adds some useful cruising flexibility to the four dedicated ensuite cabins further forward – and yet the full-beam master stateroom still has plenty of room for its own private spiral staircase. Little wonder that this beautiful yacht scooped a winner’s gong at the prestigious Motor Boat of the Year Awards in 2022.

Princess Y80: for convivial cruising

Offering a generous beam, the new Y80 provides significant volume and flexibility with owners able to specify innovative alternative layouts to suit their needs. A choice of three cockpit designs are available: a traditional U-shaped dining arrangement with additional storage solution for two SEABOBs; a central cockpit table with free standing furniture to seat eight guests; or Princess’ new ‘infinity cockpit’ layout (first seen on the new Princess Y85) with electrically sliding seating and table mechanism to transform the area from a relaxed sofa arrangement to an informal dining area.

There is a seamless connection of each zone on the main deck, from living area to dining arrangement, from well-equipped galley to day head, through to the wheelhouse with helm station and companion seating.  Below deck, four ensuite cabins sleep eight, supported by crew quarters with two further cabins and a crew mess.  The elegant master stateroom, accessed via private stairway from the main deck, makes full use of the yacht’s impressive beam.

The flybridge features relaxed seating and dining areas, a large sunpad, fully equipped wetbar with optional stools, plus stowage capacity for a 4m tender or wetbike.  Flexibility continues on the flybridge too with two further aft layout options including a relaxed free-standing L-shaped seating arrangement or spa bath with sun loungers aft.  The foredeck has been designed to offer a secluded escape to while-away an afternoon or an elegant entertaining space to sip cocktails with guests. A conversationalist seating area can easily accommodate 10 people, which can convert to offer a spacious sunpad.

Equipped with twin MAN V12 1900hp engines, the Y80 offers powerful performance with maximum speeds in excess of 30 knots.

Princess Y85: for on board entertaining

Designed in collaboration with Italian styling house, Pininfarina, the Princess Y85 adds some useful extra features for crewed adventures. In the open-plan single-level main deck saloon, for instance, there’s a large aft lounge, a forward dining table and a port galley with an attractive bar. There’s also a handy day heads in the forward part of the saloon – but the main deck helm station is divided off from the main living space for outstanding privacy on long-distance cruises. And at the touch of a button, the galley can also be fully enclosed to help divide the utility spaces from the party zones.

All this main deck versatility means there’s only one (rather than two) staircases to access the lower deck, but down below, there is ample space not just for four ensuite cabins but also for a class-leading separate crew quarters comprising two crew cabins and a crew mess. That space is echoed up on the flybridge, where the helm, dining area, wet bar and sunbed are supplemented with a large aft deck with crane and tender storage, helping free up the lower swim platform for watersports.  And in spite of the scale and calibre of her recreational spaces, the Y85 is an impressive performer too.  With twin MAN V12-1900 diesels, she can reach speeds of up to 31 knots and deliver a supremely quiet and refined cruise.

Princess Y95: for ultimate indulgence

If you want the space and flexibility of the X95 but with an extra dose of classical elegance, the flagship of the Y Class range is a great solution.  Rivalling even Princess’s own previous iconic M Class for space, facilities and quality of finish, it features the longest and most expansive hull windows ever installed on a Princess yacht. That certainly helps guarantee huge views from both the main and lower decks but the really key difference on this boat is the provision of a full-beam master suite in the forward part of the main deck.

As on the X Class models, it’s achieved by means of cleverly designed side decks that lift just forward of amidships, opening out the superstructure to wonderful effect.  The master suite is afforded plenty of space for its own lounge and dressing area, plus delightful views through floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides. And the aft part of the main deck also enjoys some distinctly high-end day spaces, thanks to a large bathing platform with an optional Beach Club.  Elsewhere, there are four additional ensuite guest cabins, accessed via a large spiral staircase, plus ample crew accommodation and an ensuite Captain’s cabin with double bed.  Beautifully designed, with a flawless finish, configurable layouts and plenty of bright, wide-open space, the flagship Y95 is the perfect ambassador of what makes the Princess Yachts Y Class so special.

LVMH Unveiled the M Class Princess Superyachts

By Adrian Prisca

Updated on August 31, 2017

biggest princess yacht

Luxury goods giant LVMH has just unveiled their newest creation for wealthy people: the M Class Princess Superyachts at the London International Boat Show. LVMH has acquired the UK-based yacht builder Princess Yachts back in 2008 and for the premiere of their first yacht of the series, the 32M, the company brought in some of its other brands such as Fendi, De Beers and Moet to demonstrated the glamour of the new range of Princess yachts.

First into production is the 105-ft 32M, truly worthy of the world class LVMH imprimatur, that’s going to have a base price of about $11 million. This long range cruising yacht boasts a huge saloon among other amenities and it will be available with a choice of four or five cabins, including a master suite with a split level bathroom, two or three double bedrooms and a twin room.

At the London International Boat Show the new Princess 32M yacht showcased lavish interior design schemes from fashion houses Fendi and Armani Casa for a haute couture on the high seas feel. LVMH also plans to launch a 40 metre version in 2012 with even more luxurious bells and whistles, like a matching set of Louis Vuitton luggage, for example.

The largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos

  • Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
  • In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
  • These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

Insider Today

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

biggest princess yacht

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

biggest princess yacht

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

biggest princess yacht

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

biggest princess yacht

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

biggest princess yacht

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

biggest princess yacht

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

biggest princess yacht

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

biggest princess yacht

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

biggest princess yacht

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

Sindhu Sundar contributed to an earlier version of this story.

Correction: May 6, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated Giovanna Vitelli's title. She is the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, not a vice president.

Princess Diana’s Yacht Saga: Revisiting the Boats She Vacationed on With Dodi Fayed

By Katherine McLaughlin

Princess Diana on a superyacht

In the summer of 1997, Dodi Fayed and Princess Diana’s yacht adventures were the infatuation of the tabloids, paparazzi, and public like no other. The pair were captured sailing around the Mediterranean in July, first with both of their families, then again, just them, at the end of the month, spurring nonstop controversy and speculation. Weeks later the couple was killed in a tragic car accident, prompting even greater interest in the brief but impactful relationship. Nearly 30 years later, understanding just what happened on the high seas remains a notable point of interest for many invested in the Royal Family.

The momentous vacation was recently recreated in season six of Netflix’s The Crown and recounted in Prince Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare . While conversations about the trip often recount what the couple did—and what Diana wore—it’s worth revisiting the stunning vessels where all the escapades took place. Below, AD surveys the two superyachts Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed used during their prominent summer together.

Jonikal, now known as Isabell Princess of the Sea

The sensationalized couple most famously spent time on Jonikal , a 208-foot superyacht. At the time, Mohamed Al-Fayed, Dodi’s father, owned the boat. Reportedly, he originally invited Diana to the yacht in an attempt to play matchmaker between the People’s Princess and his son.

Those who watch The Crown will be unsurprised to learn that the interiors of Jonikal , which has since been renamed Isabell Princess Of The Sea by a new owner, are just as lavish as those depicted in the look-alike on the show. Inside, the ship boasts nine staterooms, a formal dining room, bar, office space, swim platform, sun deck, and Jacuzzi. Designed by navel architect Vincenzo Ruggiero in the 1980s, coffered ceilings and dark wood paneling draw inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 1900s.

In his memoir, Prince Harry remembers his experience on the yacht as idyllic. “There was much laughter, horseplay, the norm whenever Mummy and Willy and I were together, though even more so on that holiday,” he writes. “Everything about that trip to St. Tropez was heaven. The weather was sublime, the food was tasty, Mummy was smiling.”

After the original trip with her children, the princess returned to the boat a second time with just the younger Fayed. According to Vanity Fair , Fayed catered to all of Di’s preferences, even letting her pick the music that played. Reportedly, she opted for tunes by George Michael, Frank Sinatra, and the English Patient soundtrack.

Nearby, a brigade of press boats captured a number of photos of Princess Diana on the yacht, formally immortalizing the vessel. Most famously, Princess Diana was captured sitting alone on the vessel’s passerelle in a now iconic image. According to Boat International , the yacht most recently sold in 2023.

As Robb Report describes it, Cujo, a 65-foot military-style superyacht was once the most famous in the world thanks to her high-profile passengers. In 1997, Fayed reportedly used this smaller vessel to woo the princess.

The impressive yacht was originally launched in 1972, commissioned by its first owner John von Neumann. According to Robb Report, Von Neumann hired Italian shipyard Baglietto to build him a boat that was “faster than any other motoryacht on the water.” During its maiden voyage, Cujo had largely achieved this goal thanks to its twin 54-liter V-18 turbo diesel engines, which provided 2,700 horsepower and allowed it to easily hit 46 miles per hour. Von Neumann eventually sold the boat to arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, who later passed the boat to Dodi Fayed, his nephew.

However, the boat’s story came to a dramatic end last summer, when it sunk off the coast of France, as reported by The Independent . According to a Facebook post from the Gendarmerie des Alpes-Maritimes, a division of the French military, passengers issued a distress call at around 12:30 local time on July 29, 2023. A little under an hour later, a rescue boat arrived, finding the vessel’s bow already partially submerged. “The cabins of the yacht were already flooded, and only a few suitcases located in the kitchen and on the deck could be retrieved by the gendarmes,” reads the statement. The seven passengers who were on board had already evacuated and were safely on a nearby lifeboat. Rescuers and passengers then quickly left the area, as the boat sank 2,500 feet to the ocean’s floor. The cause of the accident was not shared; however, according to Boat International , sources claimed that the ship hit an unknown object floating near the center of the hull.

At one point, the vessel was among the fastest in the world.

Though Princess Diana was among the most notable guests onboard, other high-profile passengers hosted by Fayed included Clint Eastwood, Tony Curtis, Bruce Willis, and Brooke Shields. Following the passing of Di and Fayed, Cujo fell into disrepair and decommissioned in 1999. After many years in storage, Fayed’s cousin Moody Al-Fayed purchased the vessel and brought it back to life. He later sold the boat to Simon Kidston, a British car collector and restorer and the last-reported owner of the vessel.
