Bareboat Yacht Charter in Croatia for Your Sailing Holidays!
Just think of sailing away with your family and friends in complete freedom. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it? As long as you are a reasonably experienced sailor and you have an adequate (international) skipper’s license, you can charter one of our boats without a skipper and enjoy sailing by yourself.
What is a bareboat charter?
In the bareboat charter , you as the skipper take full responsibility for the chartered boat and its crew members. Regardless of its name, a bareboat charter does not come empty or bare. Instead, the boat will be fully loaded with everything you need for a safe and comfortable sailing vacation.
Even though the skipper is the only person in charge of the boat, every other crew member should take some part in responsibility to have a safe and comfortable vacation. It is difficult for one person to take care of the navigation and make sure that everything else on board runs smoothly. Everybody on board should have their tasks and obligations and this is what makes the bareboat charter quite a unique experience in teamwork as well.
What are bareboat charter requirements in Croatia?
According to Croatian maritime law, you must have a permit issued by the state government of the country you are coming from in order to operate a pleasure vessel. Furthermore necessary is the VHF license. Check valid sailing licenses in Croatia !
Reasons to go for Bareboat Yacht Charter in Croatia
After discussing how bareboat yacht charters actually work, it is time to discuss why you should choose a bareboat charter in Croatia for your next vacation.
If you have a valid international skippers license, the facts listed below should help you make up your mind:
- You will enjoy a private yacht Although our skippers are chosen both for their professional skills and for their people skills, most people prefer to have their privacy onboard a yacht. Why settle just for cabins when you can have the boat all for yourself!? You can consider it as your own piece of paradise in which you are surrounded only by your family and friends. As much as yachts can be large, they are tiny compared to the outdoors and the crew will spend a lot of time together socialising, swimming, eating and whatever they are planning on doing. If you would like to share that time only with your loved ones, the bareboat charter is the way to go.
- You will spend less money In the bareboat charter, you are not paying for the skipper’s fee and for his food and drinks or taking him along to the restaurants that you are enjoying. So, if you are able to sail a yacht yourself and you feel confident in finding your way in the sailing area, a bareboat yacht charter will be easier in your pocket. If you are wondering how the charter pricing work we have you covered.
- Your family and friends can serve as the "crew". If you are looking into bareboat charters you probably like to take the helm yourself and have the full adventure and experience of a sailing holiday. The journey will be much more memorable than any typical holiday vacation because of the various roles it offers. There is no doubt that sailing together as a family or a group of friends will give you thousands of incredible memories to cherish for life. You will create a stronger bond by assigning roles and tasks to handle while sailing to the next exciting destination to explore.
- You can sail at your own pace One of the biggest advantages of hiring a bareboat yacht charter is that you can explore the Croatian coast and islands at your own will. It will give you the freedom of sailing slowly; discovering hidden beaches and bays and snorkelling at all the best spots for as long as you want. Of course, most of these things can also be agreed with a skipper but being able to act spontaneously is an additional bonus. It will be exciting for you to sail a yacht yourself since it really builds up your confidence and voyage experience.
- Croatia offers the largest selection of bareboat yachts If you have decided to rent a bareboat, Croatia is the place to go. With roughly 4.000 yachts to offer it is the world's main charter destination. With an international skippers license the list of yachts available to you is almost endless, from sailboats over catamarans to motor yachts all are just a click away. Just contact us and we will find the perfect bareboat yacht for you or browse through our vast selection and pick a yacht for yourself.
- The Adriatic sea in Croatia is easy to navigate With over 1000 islands in Croatia the sailing distances when island hopping can be really short if you want and often you do not have to cross more than 10 nautical miles to get to the next exciting destination. On top of that, the nautical infrastructure in Croatia is amazing and it offers an abundance of marinas , safe town ports and anchorages with buoys to spend your nights. The mild weather and pleasant wind on the Adriatic Sea will further make your navigation in Croatia a joy to remember.
Yachting in Croatia at its finest
In case you decide to spend your holiday in a boat and explore famous Croatian islands and cities such as Dubrovnik and Split, you are at the right place. With roughly 3.000 yachts ranging from single cabin boats to 6 cabins catamarans, Croatia Yachting is the best charter company in Croatia !
Croatia Yachting will make it simple for you by providing all the necessary nautical information: we will recommend the itinerary , best destinations and restaurants to visit . All you need to bring with you are the crew and the provisioning. Even the provisioning can be made easier for you as we can deliver the ordered items to the chartered yacht before your check-in.
Some Final Words
Well, these are more or less all the facts that speak for a bareboat yacht charter in Croatia to deliver a joyful experience on your sailing vacation. With our service, you’ll be safe and sound, your desired yacht will be in perfect sailing condition. Just give us a call or send an e-mail and we’ll make sure you have the best possible sailing vacation!

The deck and lounge are located at the same level which gives the impression of greater spaciousness of the ship. Catamarans can achieve considerably higher speed while sailing than mono-hulls. Most of them have 4-6 cabins which mean that can accommodate 8-12 persons. Catamarans often have a shallower drought than same-size mono-hulls so you can explore all of the hidden small bays and beaches on islands as well as on the Croatian Adriatic coast.

Hey Grigory, thanks for asking. The boat was not in good condition. For example, there were no mooring, deck or motoring lights, so we feared a boat would hit us while we slept, and were not complying with the law while sailing at night. The anchor w…
Sailing Croatia
Without a doubt, Croatia can be described as one of the best kept secrets of the European sailing destinations. Sheltered by the chain of the Dinaric Alps, its endless coastline is covered with pristine beaches and charming medieval towns. A Croatia yacht charter is a wonderful choice whether you are looking for a relaxed sailing vacation with your family, or an exiting sailing adventure with your friends. This region has many secluded islands and islets, along with a wide variety of comfortable marinas. You can choose a boat charter in Croatia with easy hops or longer, more challenging passages.
A Croatian sailing vacation offers a wonderful chance to explore ancient ruins and historic cities, to stay for a night in a secluded anchorage, or to visit traditional fishing villages - all of this in one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe.
Yachting is one of the most popular forms of recreation in Croatia, thus numerous catamarans and sailboats can be seen all over the coastline. Croatia yacht charters are well developed. Here you will find one of the biggest European chains of modern marinas with berths for yachts and catamarans from 30 to over 100 feet long. Anchorages, moorings, and marinas have all the necessary amenities and are located within a few miles of one another. In addition, while sailing in Croatia you will find many free moorings near family restaurants where you can sample local wines and fresh seafood right on board your own yacht.
The Adriatic coastline can be divided into three counties: Istria, Central Dalmatia and South Dalmatia. Yacht charters in Croatia are available all along the coast. Below are some useful tips for selecting a boat rental in Croatia that will help you find the perfect time and place for your dream sailing trip.
North Croatia Sailing – Istria County
July to the middle of September is the best time for a yacht charter in the northern part of Croatia. During this season the water is warm and most days are sunny, while the prevailing wind is mild mistral. In early spring and late autumn this area may be prone to bora, strong local northeastern winds.
One of the most convenient places to start a North Croatia yacht charter is in Pula, the city closest to the international airport.
During your sailing vacation in the northern region of Istria, we recommend a visit to the former Tito`s state summer residence, his favorite safari park in the Brijuni Islands, to walk under the ancient pines of Mali Losinj and to sail under the picturesque Cres Island bridge. The stunning view of the ancient Rovigno City and its main landmark, St. Euphemia Basilica, can be seen only from the water. If you are looking for a more challenging sailing passage in Croatia, you may like to head from Pula directly to Venice. Within a several hour journey you will find yourself along the Italian coast.
Southern Croatia boat rentals – Dubrovnik County
Since ancient times Croatia has had great strategic importance, thus over the centuries various civilizations and cultures have left part of their legacy and influence, creating a rich and diverse culture.
Sailing along the southern Adriatic Coast of Croatia is recommended for sailors with moderate to good sailing experience. In this part of the country, good weather and fair winds last longer into the season, so you can explore the sights and enjoy the beauty of the Adriatic coast until late autumn. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters.
Dubrovnik sailing vacations
A yacht charter in Dubrovnik, the southernmost region of Croatia, offers a great variety of comfortable marinas and secluded moorings. The medieval city of Dubrovnik is called the "Pearl of the Adriatic" and because of its long history of maritime trade, has played an important role since ancient times. Today its blend of historic architecture and modern cafes and nightlife make it a fascinating destination.
The rugged coast south of Croatia is a great choice for sailors who value stunning scenery and historical sites more than the distance passed. What could be better than having breakfast on board your yacht near an ancient fortress of an old town
During a yacht charter in Croatia, you won't want to miss a visit to Mljet National Park and the golden island of Sipan. There you will find stunning vistas of the Dalmatian Islands and enjoy a landscape covered with orange and tangerine trees, palms, agaves, Renaissance parks, flower gardens and medieval stone buildings.
Sailing in Split area
The Split area is one of the most popular Croatia yacht charter destinations. Located only 10 minutes from the airport, it attracts sailors from all over the Europe. A Split yacht charter is an easy starting point for a sailing vacation in Croatia, with open access to the most stunning destinations and secluded islands.
Within a 7-day Croatia yacht charter you will be able to visit Hvar, an island popular for its exclusive cafes and bars on the Adriatic, learn how to extract marble on the island of Bra, visit famous Korula island, the birthplace of Marco Polo, and soak up history and culture with Renaissance cathedrals and ancient monuments while walking the ancient streets of Trogir.
When sailing in the Split area do not miss a chance to visit the waterfalls located in Krk National Park, a gorgeous destination any time of year.
Overall, a Croatia yacht charter offers an ideal mix of history, exquisite Mediterranean cuisine and unforgettable sailing opportunities. With excellent infrastructure, short passages and calm waters, Croatia yacht charters rival any other sailing destinations in the world.
It is also a perfect country for those who are looking for an unforgettable sailing adventure in Europe.

Bareboat Yacht Charter
All you should know about bareboat yacht charter.
A bareboat yacht charter is a type of yacht rental where a charterer rents a yacht without a crew or any other additional services. Essentially, the charterer or one of his crew becomes the skipper and takes full responsibility for navigating and operating the yacht. Bareboat charters are typically more affordable than crewed charters but require the charterer to have sailing experience and the necessary certifications to operate the yacht. The charterer is also responsible for all aspects of the trip, including navigation, provisioning, and cleaning. This type of charter is perfect for experienced sailors who want the freedom to explore on their own terms.
Why choose Croatia for a bareboat yacht charter?
Perfect sailing area.
Thanks to its indented coast, there are over 1000 islands , islets, rocks, and bays on the Adriatic. Most of the islands are not permanently populated during the year. Croatia’s Adriatic archipelago consists of three main regions, northern, central, and southern Adriatic. The North Adriatic is Istria and Kvarner, the Middle Adriatic is north and central Dalmatia (Zadar, Šibenik, Split), and the South Adriatic is south Dalmatia (Dubrovnik).
Bareboat yacht charter in Croatia is an excellent choice for experienced sailors, as well as for beginners. The nearest islands’ distance is about an hour to an hour and a half of sailing, which does not require long and extensive preparation. Sailing in Croatia is considered to be safe. In case of bad weather, you can always berth in a safe harbour on time. Of course, with continuous follow of the weather.
Pleasant weather conditions
The mild and pleasant Mediterranean climate’s influence makes sailing in Croatia and the Adriatic possible throughout the year. Bareboat yacht Charter season is running from April to November. Bareboat sailing is also possible outside this period, noting that most of the vessels are under maintenance and service during the winter. Out of charter season, most of the islands’ facilities, like marinas and restaurants, are closed, but you can berth in the city ports.
Weather conditions for sailing vary by season. Spring and autumn are characterized mainly by north and south winds, while in the summer, the most frequent are western and southwestern winds. In the low season, April, May, and October, prices are much lower, and fewer boats on the sea.

For all bareboat yacht charters in Croatia, the charterer must leave a security deposit at check-in. The security deposit is returned at check out entirely if there is no damage to the boat caused by the skipper or his crew. The client can pay the security deposit in cash or by card. The alternative to a security deposit is the insurance of the deposit. This means you will pay a smaller amount - non-refundable and leave the reduced part of the deposit - refundable part. The insurance of the deposit is not available for all charter boats.
It is advisable for each skipper to make skipper insurance with one of the insurance companies. You can apply online for skipper and crew insurance with EIS . However, even when you have skipper insurance, you will leave a security deposit at check-in. In case of damage settlement, with the proper documentation and invoice, you can get a refund for the paid insurance claim.
Useful Tips for Bareboat Charter
When chartering a bareboat yacht, you take full responsibility as a skipper for yourself, your crew, and the boat. Before sailing out, we recommend planning the sailing itinerary according to the weather forecast and making the food provision . There are markets and shops on all of the inhabited islands in Croatia. Therefore, it is unnecessary to buy groceries in advance for the whole week, for the first two or three days is advisable.

What is a bareboat yacht charter?
By renting a sailing yacht, motor yacht, or catamaran without a trained crew, you may experience a unique approach to discovering the Croatian coast. International skipper and VHF certifications are required for one crew member.
You are now in charge of all choices made on your private yacht, as well as navigation and safety. For those who have sailed before, it is the apex of independence and freedom.
Choose your vessel
For bareboat charters, Yacht Charter Croatia provides a variety of yachts to suit different tastes and group sizes. Catamarans, motor yachts, and sailing monohulls are all easily accessible. The option you choose will depend on your level of sailing expertise, your budget, and the size of your group.
Traditionalists will love monohulls since they provide a single-hull shape and a classic sailing experience. They provide a genuine connection with the water and are quick to react.
On the other side, catamarans offer comfort, stability, and room. Their two-hull design reduces healing and provides more space for leisure and entertainment.
Motor yachts offer a different kind of experience, allowing you to explore the coast more quickly. They are ideal for people who wish to travel farther or who just like the rush of moving quickly.
Sailing season and navigating crystal clear waters
The sailing season normally lasts from April to October in Croatia. Every season has its own distinct charm and benefits. In April and May, there are fewer tourists, great weather, and lush, green scenery.
The best time to visit is from June to August because of warmer temperatures, bright skies, and active social events. A more relaxing sailing experience is possible in September and October because of the pleasant weather and calmer waves. Depending on your level of skill, navigating the Croatian coast can be exciting or challenging. The country’s complex archipelago involves precise navigational skills as well as familiarity with local laws. Before going ashore, become acquainted with local regulations, weather forecasts, and nautical charts.
