DOING THE UNEXPECTED

Valder Yachts is an all-carbon fibre vessel produced using epoxy-infused carbon components. Essentially, the hull has four main modules that are not all brought together for final assembly until the interior is virtually complete. This considerably speeds up the building process as the sides are left off the hull as long as possible during construction. Using the latest C.N.C. programmes, all the components fit together with millimetre precision.

New Roger Hill design takes shape with DuFLEX

roger hill yacht design photos

The divinely named Celeste , a 12-metre Roger Hill-designed power catamaran, is in build at G&T Marine, Auckland – the first-time seasoned boat builder Grant Symmans has worked with the DuFLEX panel system and Z-press from ATL Composites.

The privately-owned, custom-built, displacement-hull powercat is on track for delivery by May 2023 to an experienced owner looking for volume and ease of cruising.

So far, according to Grant, he has used the Z-press to join the DuFLEX panels for superstructure and cabin top.

“It’s a first for me,” he states. “Roger is a huge fan, so we went with it. It’s labour saving, comes as a kit, and the DuFLEX is lightweight and sturdy.”

The 12-metre vessel is a “fairly straight forward” build, single level sedan with a beam of 4.8-metres.

“Using DuFLEX has made construction a simple process and at this stage we’re impressed with it. We’ll know more when we do the hulls,” Grant adds.

Using ATL’s Z-Press streamlines the composite panel joining process, applying heat and pressure to cure the epoxy adhesive on the Z-Joints. Joins cure fully in 7 to 20 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature, type of hardener, core type and thickness of the panel.

Roger Hill, specialist power multihull designer, says the client sought a well-appointed powercat for “the next phase of his cruising lifestyle”.

“I have always said that these displacement hull power cats we design are ‘sailor’s power boats’,” he explains. “That is, when you have been a yachtie all your life and you’re facing the unavoidable ravages of time on your old body but don’t want to give up boating, these cats are a good option!

“For Auckland-based yachties who have been cruising around at around 6 to 8 knots, a lot of the time motoring (as you get older), and a lot of the time beating to windward, these smaller displacement hull power cats are ideal.

“They cruise most economically around 14 to 15 knots, or about twice the speed you have been used to going all of your previous boating life, and they are really fuel efficient. Also, they will motor directly into any head wind and nasty sea state without spilling your drink, or leaning over.”

Fortuitously, the client is Roger’s very first when he struck out on his own and established his design firm 27 years ago.

“He owned his lovely 11.9-metre cruising yacht from new, it fitted his requirements perfectly all of that time and he kept it in immaculate condition. Like all of us, he is getting older and the physicality of sailing a yacht basically on your own was starting to tell.

“He made the very hard decision to sell and move on with the next phase of his boating life. They went out for a ride on a smaller 10-metre displacement power cat we designed and from that, he commissioned his new 12-metre design.”

While there is nothing particularly new or radical about the design, there are some unique features.

“The client wanted something that he could trust and depend on to fulfil his future yachting aspirations,” explains Roger. “As with the original sailing yacht, the new power cat is specifically detailed around his requirements.

“Things like the very clever swimming diving platform that lowers down between the motors to form steps down to a wider bottom panel that allows easy access into the water for diving and launching a small RIB.

“It’s just the two of them, and the layout will be very comfortable for them to live aboard for extended periods through the summer as they have done with their yacht for many years.

roger hill yacht design photos

“The choice to go with outboards was based on being able to explore areas they have previously not been able access with a deep draft keel, so adding a new dimension to their cruising ambitions.”

The choice to use the DuFLEX system came from the client seeing it for himself, visiting the 16-metre Omahu  and speaking to its owner who had a previous sailing cat built out of DuFLEX and was extremely positive about the process.

“The preliminary design for the structure of “Celeste” was based on standard foam cored composite boat building methods. From that the options were costed up and DuFLEX won the job!”

Cored with Divinycell foam, the DuFLEX panels in Celeste have a combination of H80 and H100 densities in the hull shell. The hull bottoms are cored with 20mm H100 DuFLEX Strips that are laminated with a 460 grm unidirectional E-Fibreglass which will have an additional laminate applied on both sides, while hull sides are a mix of H80 thicknesses and laminated with double layers of 800grm quadraxial chosen to meet performance and engineering requirements.

Grant Symmans was a more traditional builder accustomed to using plywood, timber, and fibreglass skinning methods of construction, but he was intrigued with system and its multiple benefits – precision cut, time saving, labour saving and minimal waste.

Grant and his two co-workers are now well into the build.

“They made the large cabin top first and it went together very well and quickly, and they are now starting to plank up the first hull.

“The client, whose father was a New Zealand timber boat builder and built many cold-moulded Kauri sailing yachts, was quite tentative about the process but is now also becoming much more relaxed and happy as he sees the boat coming to life.”

Roger Hill 19m Power Catamaran - Bajaca

roger hill yacht design photos

Design Concept

With those goals in mind, it was clear to Roger that a semi-displacement hull form would meet the type of boating and performance the clients were looking for. Live aboard ability was critical so fuel capacity, water-making ability, power generation, and storage were priorities in the design.

Launched December 14 2015, the 18.7 metre Bajaca designed by Roger Hill Yacht Design, New Zealand, was commissioned by a Sunshine Coast businessman with a brief for up-to-date styling above the waterline, self-contained facilities for extended cruising in remote areas, and the ability to run at 25 knots if required.

Construction

Because of previous project experience and construction successes, Roger based the design for construction with ATL Composites DuFLEX composite panels with structural DIAB Divinycell foam cores.

The hull bottoms, lower topsides, chines and engine bearers were cored with 30mm Divinycell H130 and laminated with 2 layers of 850grm E-fibreglass quadraxial. Divinycell H has a proven track record, and its unique IPN chemical structure, yields impressive mechanical performance making it ideal for applications subject to fatigue, slamming or impact loads.

DuFLEX panels, cored with Divinycell H80 and laminated with a variety of fibreglass orientations, were manufactured for all other structural areas, predominantly in flat panel form, but in some cases, with unidirectional laminates for strip planking curved sections, to optimise the engineering and performance in specific areas.

ATL’s Featherlight panels have been supplied for the non-structural interior parts, and are cored with lower density Divinycell H60 and H35 cores laminated with a 600grm quadraxial E-Fibreglass to ensure uniform stiffness, stability and lightweight. The interior panels will be finished with a combination of timber veneers, decorative fabrics and some painted sections.

Roger commented “Construction with DuFLEX will ensure the required weight, stiffness and stability is achieved to optimise the performance and fuel consumption without sacrificing comfort or performance. Using the DIAB foam- cored DuFLEX option has saved approximately 2,000 kgs over more conventional building methods”

To take full advantage of the DuFLEX Building System, Roger worked with ATL engineers to supply the design as a CNC-routed kit to reduce labour and keep wastage to a minimum, and a DuFLEX Z-Press was supplied to Noosa Marine to join the panels and further speed up the build process.

The design layout was developed closely with the owners keeping the cabins as large as possible with full head room. The main cabin/saloon area is open plan with the doors and windows sliding away to allow entry to the cockpit with no step-over sills, and the large dining space is easily served from the galley or the BBQ on the aft platform.

The owner’s cabin is forward, featuring a large ensuite bathroom, and takes the full width of the starboard hull. The prime guest cabin also has its own ensuite and the other two secondary guest cabins share a large, mid-ship bathroom that includes a full-size domestic washing machine and separate dryer.

The design does not have a conventional flybridge, but does have a sun-bathing area on the cabin top where the tender is stored with a davit crane and a surfboard/paddleboard rack. This cabin top area is also fitted with large sliding hatches to maximise ventilations and light into the forward area of the saloon.

The boat will comfortably house family and friends, and the modern design, extensive entertaining both inside and out, luxurious interior, and a cruising speed of 16 knots will make it perfect for long range cruising and living.

Roger Hill Yacht Design reveals details of two new powercats

RHYD

New 18m powercat is similar in hull form to Bajaca

Kiwi powercat designer Roger Hill has announced two new designs, an 18m semi-displacement powercat and a 12m full-displacement powercat.

The new 18m model is similar in hull form to that of Bajaca, an 18.7m semi-displacement powercat. Although a small amount shorter than Bajaca, it has a longer waterline with a contemporary bow profile and a finer underwater shape forward.

“The client went through a detailed sea trial process and comparative analysis with our 18m foil assist high-speed planning cat design before concluding that the semi-displacement hull form would best suit his intended use,” says Hill.

In ‘light ship’ mode, the top speed will be close to 30kt. General half-load mode top speed will be in the more typical 25kt to 26kt, which should be expected with this type of cat hull.

Motive power will be a pair of the new Yanmar 6LF 550 hp diesels, an ideal match for this mid-size cat. The boat will be built in New Zealand and launched mid-2022.

RHYD 2

A 12m cat is also underway for an existing owner

The 12m outboard-powered cat is underway for an existing owner who was Roger Hill Yacht Design’s first client 25 years ago. The smaller 9m or 10m boats with a pair of small outboards cruise at around 14kt or 15kt and have a top speed of 20kt-21kt. The 12m vessel will have a top speed of 25kt.

Construction is standard fibreglass, foam cores, and epoxy resin and the internal layout is optimised for two people to cruise in comfort with an occasional guest.

AIMEX announces keynote speakers for ASMEX 2024 conference

Roger hill breaks new ground with monohull “tank”.

The latest Roger Hill design is a dramatic departure from the multihulls he’s built his reputation on for more than 25 years.

roger hill yacht design photos

The custom-designed 13.9-metre monohull motor yacht, named “Tank”, was commissioned by a former client and, while a step out of Roger’s comfort zone, the new build will still have a number of “Hill hallmarks”, including the lightweight, durability of the DuFLEX panel system.

As Roger explains, the brief was to design a monohull motor yacht for a couple who were intent on downsizing and using their boat more “casually”.

“Their ideas and needs have changed and evolved,” says Roger. “Their family has grown up and they would not use a big boat enough now there is only the two of them.

“A key factor was power and fuel capacity for longer trips. It’s powered by twin Mercury V12 Verado engines, with 600 hp each which are hailed as ‘game changing’ for their extraordinary range and performance, as well as the outboard segment’s first steerable gearcase and industry-first two-speed transmission.

“The 1,900 Litre fuel capacity will provide approximately 700 nautical miles of range at a cruising speed of 25 knots. But the boat will also be capable of 50 knot runs to Stradbroke Island for a picnic.”

The boat is being constructed by Julian Griffiths and the team at Noosa Marine from DuFLEX/Foam Composite Panels of varying densities; H130 Divinycell in the hull bottoms and H80 in the Topsides to provide structural performance and also to comply with engineering requirements to meet NCSV Compliance under AMSA.

roger hill yacht design photos

“The lightweight construction optimises the vessel’s performance and installation of a Quick MC2 anti-roll gyro will provide added stability,” says Roger.

Construction on “Tank” is halfway through. “It’s called ‘Tank’ because it looks like one,” says Julian.

“It looks like a big superyacht tender, with double berth and everything that opens and shuts onboard, including an outdoor galley under a T-top, lounge front and back with tables that can fold down.

“It’s about 8 tonnes, but it’s light for its length and it will certainly be speedy!”

No stranger to working on monohulls as the designer and builder of his own brand of weekender, the Noosa 7, Julian reports that the Hill monohull is proving “a tricky technical build because it has a lot of mechanical complexities”.

“For example, the anchor tucks behind an anchor locker and because of the plumb bow, it has to pivot out on an actuator. Then there’s a feature a lot of new boats have these days, the sides all fold out to give owners more leisure space. Plus, the duckboard boarding platform rises in and out of water and there are retractable awnings for added shade.”

Along with the large double berth, “Tank” boasts plenty of outdoor seating, a day bed that converts to an alfresco night berth. Another unique feature is the low draft of just 600cm, so the owners can practically beach “Tank” wherever they choose to anchor.

Fortunately, Roger has specified the DuFLEX panel system which Julian has many years of experience building with.

“DuFLEX makes the build quicker and more economical. It makes the vessel lightweight and strong. It’s a win-win,” he says.

For Roger, the new monohull is a stimulating adventure into new waters, and “a big confidence vote for the client to design with me”.

“Having the close relationship I have with the client, Julian at Noosa Marine and the technical advice and engineering expertise provided by the team at ATL, has resulted in a combination of solid information that has optimised this design.”

Delivery is scheduled for the end of 2022 in time for summer.

ROGER HILL DESIGN TAKES SHAPE WITH DUFLEX

roger hill yacht design photos

The divinely named “Celeste”, a 12M Roger Hill designed power catamaran, is in build at G&T Marine, Auckland

This is the first-time seasoned boat builder Grant Symmans has worked with the DuFLEX panel system and Z-press from ATL Composites. The custom-built, displacement-hull powercat is on track for delivery by May 2023 to an experienced owner looking for volume and ease of cruising. So far, according to Grant, he has used the Z-press to join the DuFLEX panels for superstructure and cabin top.

“It’s a first for me,” he states. “Roger is a huge fan, so we went with it. It’s labour saving, comes as a kit, and the DuFLEX is lightweight and sturdy.”The 12m vessel is a “fairly straight forward” build, single level sedan with a beam of 4.8m.

“That is, when you have been a yachtie all your life and you’re facing the unavoidable ravages of time on your old body but don’t want to give up boating, these cats are a good option!

roger hill yacht design photos

“They cruise most economically around 14 to 15 knots, or about twice the speed you have been used to going all of your previous boating life, and they are really fuel efficient. Also, they will motor directly into any head wind and nasty sea state without spilling your drink, or leaning over.”

Fortuitously, the client is Roger’s very first when he struck out on his own and established his design firm 27 years ago.

“The choice to go with outboards was based on being able to explore areas they have previously not been able access with a deep draft keel, so adding a new dimension to their cruising ambitions.”

17.5m High Performance Cruising cat

Image

This sailing cat is a development of the slightly larger 18.5m ‘Cat – Ion’ for a German couple who are very experienced cruising and racing sailors. It is being built in Germany at the Kneirim yard on the Keil Canal out of resin infused carbon fibre with foam cores and honeycomb cores in certain areas (not infused).

The design is slightly ‘de-tuned’ in some areas compared to its larger sisters. The centre boards will be straight symmetric sections compared to the asymmetric boards on the other bigger cats and the rudders will not be retractable or fitted with a T foil. The rig will be rotating and the mainsail reefing will be a conventional slab system compared to the boom furlers on the other cats. The change to the boards will make the boat a bit easier to sail when short handed and as the rudders are the deepest part of the boat and vulnerable to occasional grounding in shallow water not having the foil on the bottom will avoid breaking them off if they hit the bottom.

The interior layout is specific to the clients brief with the focus on a spacious owner’s area in the stbd hull and comfortable guest accommodation on the port side with a small twin berth crew cabin fwd. The boat will be fully equipped for live aboard cruising with all the required fittings and features, laundry, air conditioning, water making, pop up large TV, etc.

The sail plan is extensive. Designed to cover all the options required to sail the boat to optimal performance when cruising or racing.

Motive power is provided by 2 Yanmar 75hp sail drive units.

20m Foil assist power cat

Image

Let’s start with perhaps one of the more interesting ones. Over the past few years we have been developing our design skills and knowledge around these foil assisted asymmetric planing hull cats. Like most design processes it is a bit of an evolutionary situation, starting with the 17m ‘Voodoo’ and then the new 18m semi production design of which there have been 3 launched to date and two more started.

Each boat is a bit different and each needs to have the foil design optimised to specifically suit. The end result is a very high standard, luxury, live aboard power cat that can do ocean passages at an average speed around 28 to 33 knots. Something that is currently quite unique in that class and size compared to mono hull pleasure vessels offered on the market.

The new 20m design is taking that design process to the next level. The first boat out of the moulds will be a full resin infused carbon fibre and foam core laminate to minimise the weight and maximise the strength and give the best performance possible. Top speed will be 45 knots, cruising speed with the same minimal fuel burn will be from around 18 knots up to 35 knots.

The helipad is a feature for this first owner and not mandatory.

10m Alloy displacement electric cat

Image

This is our first pure electric drive design. It is at an early stage of development so there is no material available yet for the media. The hull form is similar to the range of 10m composite outboard powered displacement cats we have designed that are super-efficient so it should slip along nicely and optimise the available stored energy and on-board charging capacity. The electric motors will be powered by a bank of 32 Lithium batteries to give a top speed of 20 knots. Back-up power generation on board is supplied by a 170hp diesel generator. The battery bank is not light weight but this is offset by the small electric motors and the single fossil fuel engine on board so in balance it is a reasonable trade off weight wise. The initial cost of the electric system is reasonably high but a bit like the modern electrical vehicles on our roads the long term view is required and becoming increasing main stream and acceptable. As these new systems become more efficient and cost effective we will be seeing more and more of this type of craft on the water.

12m Asymmetric foiling outboard composite power cat

Image

This is a new high speed power cat design suitable for construction from a pre-made, pre-cut panel system and ideally suited for a lifting foil although it is not essential to have a foil, it will work well without one but not be as efficient or have as much top speed for a given amount of power. Outboards are becoming more and more powerful, more efficient, and more reliable these days with high power diesel options coming on line as well. They are being used on much larger vessels than was common and in multi-unit configurations (quad layout on cats) for very high speeds. The 12m design is well suited for the larger single units in the 300 to 400 hp range and with the foil will have a top speed of 45 knots and up. The design suits the small open fly bridge with the rigid shade bimini but would look good with a sedan top as well. The light displacement and shallow draft with the outboards is very useful for beach access and in and around reefs. The modern plumb bow maximises the waterline length and increases the planing efficiency with a greater area for the bottom loading compared to a similar length vessel with a conventional raked stem.

14m Planing hull power cat

Image

Readers of this magazine will have previously seen the near sister ship of this design that was beautifully built from and ATL Composites ‘Duflex’ kit by Noosa Marine for a North Queensland client. This one is going to WA and will be cruising out of Perth to all places north along that coast at times accommodating up to 10 people! This 14m is being built to survey, complying with the NSCV 2B standard using the DNV-GL rule for the composite engineering undertaken by the team at ATL Composites. It is a challenging exercise trying to maintain the speed and efficiency of its Queensland sister while also complying with those standards. Some performance loss is offset by a tougher and more versatile cruising platform that can multi task as a private yacht and a commercial vessel. The overall length and the beam are specific to the place it is berthed otherwise for this design brief we would have probably stretched it out a metre or so. The team at Noosa Marine are very experienced with building high performance cats, sail and power, and will be keeping a keen eye on the weight and optimising performance.

There is a second 14m planing cat underway in Auckland that will have a similar hull length and beam to the WA boat bit is quite different in most other aspects with a sedan top with tender storage and 465 hp pod drives. This lighter boat with minimal appendage drag will have a sparkling performance and fuel efficiency. The initial cost of the drive system is high but offsetting that is the simplicity of the installation, no steering, no exhaust system, no drive shafts, less labour. This boat is also being built from an ATL Composites kit with the owners coming from an 8.9m composite outboard power cat of our design. Cruising and fishing in the Hauraki Gulf will be its primary use.

16m Semi displacement alloy/composite power cat

Image

This design is also for a previous client who built his last boat out of alloy (11.14m planing hull) which had a composite cabin top. The composite cabin top for the sedan style and the composite fly bridge option is something that we do quite often, it seems to offer a more aesthetic and cleaner look and a high standard of finish is a bit easier to achieve compared to an all alloy structure. Builders like it because it is a large part of the boat that can be built separately, either by themselves or with a sub- contractor and is easily lifted up and fitted near the final stage of the build. This design is built to survey and will be launched later in the year to take advantage of the next 2 seasons of charter worked centred around the next America’s cup in Auckland. It is also a family cruising boat and has a large fishing and recreational area at the aft end of the cockpit around the ‘island’. With the cockpit activity and the fly bridge helm it is a nice option to have the tender storage on the foredeck with its launching crane alongside. This will be a very comfortable cruising boat in any sea conditions and will have enough range at a good speed to get up to the Islands in the winter.
