Virgin Islands Yacht Charters directly manages the charter fleet.  We are not a broker.  We do work with many reputable and trustworthy charter brokers who regularly book our boats and are familiar with our procedures and knowledgeable of the local cruising grounds.  At the same time, there are many brokers out there who know absolutely nothing about our fleet OR even the Virgin Islands themselves.  Please be aware. 

Catamarans are wonderfully spacious and provide ample area for moving around.  Whether it is in the cockpit or salon which spans over both hulls allowing for a larger area inside, the foredeck with the trampoline  for sun-tanning, or the great lounging area on the top deck you will enjoy the variety of ways to spend your day on the water.  Cats are much more stable than their counterparts which can be much better for new or inexperienced sailors who haven't quite found their sea legs yet or those who are prone to seasickness.   Two engines allow for greater maneuverability when in a marina or picking up mooring balls and thus, have gained popularity in recent years.  And, you will love the panoramic views!

A tour along the North side of St. John makes for a great start to your day on Take It Easy Custom Charters. As we journey along the coast, we can stop at what’s considered to be some of the best snorkeling on the island such as Waterlemon Cay, Maho Bay or Whistling Key.

So, you want to visit stunning white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue waters and have loads of beach bars to choose from? Then, Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgins Islands is the destination for you!

Home to only 280 people and over 30 beach bars, Jost is the ultimate fun in the sun destination.

You will need your passport and go through customs to visit Jost Van Dyke since it is in British territory. We go through customs on a regular basis so contact us if you have any questions.

One of the farthest British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda is home to the world-famous Baths – a series of giant smooth, granite boulders strewn across magnificent white sandy beaches. These boulders lean against each other making cathedral style “rooms” below filled with warm lapping water that surrounds your body and small tunnels to explore. The Baths is truly a unique destination for adventure seekers who enjoy boulder jumping or being off the beaten path.

Home to a super, upscale resort, Peter Island is a great place to spoil yourself. This resort has a pool bar, upscale gift shop and day spa. Dead Man’s Beach is the only beach in the islands with sugar sand, the softest sand on planet earth!

The Caribbean is known for its clear waters and beautiful beaches. The snorkeling here is amazing, and Norman Island has two such spots.

The Indians are pinnacle rock formations jutting out of 60 feet deep water. Exposed to the currents, a constant source of food nourishes the coral and sea life making this one of the best snorkel destinations in the BVI.

The Caves are the legendary resting place of buried treasure that was the inspiration for the book Treasure Island. Three caves await to be explored teeming with marine life and mystery.

While almost every boat going to the BVI will stop in Tortola for customs, this island is straight up neglected by the day boat community. Tortola has the only beaches left in the Virgin Islands where it will be just you on it!

If you desire your own beach, ask the crew of Take It Easy or Take It Easy 2 for the Tortola charter day trip and the island could be yours!

Buck Island is home to dozens of green sea turtles which are as close to tame as a wild turtle can get. Swim with the sea turtles and see other amazing marine life. Around the corner is an old navy barge ship wreck in 30′ of water, a snorkeler’s dream. Water Island is the Jost Van Dyke of the USVI with two awesome beach bars on honeymoon beach that serve amazing food and drinks.

If you have ventured all the way out to Virgin Gorda, then Cooper Island is a great place for lunch. This tiny island used to be a must stop for pirates and merchants back in the day to get their water and rum barrels repaired. Now it has a great little restaurant and fully-stocked rum bar that serves every rum made in the Caribbean!

Captained Charter: A captained yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the captain, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases captains will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a captain as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can captain these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In St Thomas

If you are on a gulet or captained yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of St Thomas. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of St Thomas, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

​You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Captain Kyle and Henry were fabulous! This activity made an incredible vacation fabulous! Kyle and Henry made everyone comfortable and make the trip fun. Kyle even gave us some history of the landmarks we saw. I would recommend Kyle and Henry and this boat ride as a must do!

This day was great and so was the boat and the captain. We had our family of 4 and we went out with Brian for a full day around St John. We had such a great time and he was the nicest person and so easy to talk to. He also knew alot about the island and its history. He also made the best rum punch. What a great time we had. Wedding went well, and the snorkeling at water island. They took us where we saw sea turtles and stingrays. The captain and Rachel we such great hosts, so attentive and just so nice. We all enjoyed our half day tour. Can’t say enough good things about them!

What an incredible day!! Captan Bryan is amazing and probably the best captain we’ve ever had! He listened to basically what we wanted to do and then crafted the itinerary to perfection. We circumnavigated St. John and he took us to some of the most beautiful spots for snorkeling and just relaxing in the water. His superb timing got us to Lime Out for lunch at JUST the right time to secure us the best Lilly pad in the house! He was personal and informative and took the trip (which would have been great by itself) to the next level. Highly recommend!!

We had an absolutely fabulous day with Glenn! Truly, it could not have been better! Glenn is a very experienced sailor and very knowledgeable about the Caribbean. He is also a great guy and we all thoroughly enjoyed hanging with him for the day. We snorkeled at several great spots in the BVI, visited Willie T's and Soggy Dollar.

Whenever we visit St John "Boat Day" is always everyone's favorite day of the the vacation. This year was fabulous! We are a 3 generation family of 11 with six kids ages 9 and under. Captain Alex and First mate Aaron found out exactly what we like to do and they made it happen. The snorkeling was amazing, lunch from the pizza boat was delicious and fun and the time out on the water all day cannot be beat. Thank you Seas the Day and especially to Alex and Aaron. We looked into doing the group tours but you get so much more value for the dollar by chartering a boat and St Thomas Boat Tour is the best priced of all the options. My family are not boating people and it was a very choppy day on the water, but Justin made them feel so relaxed with his demeanor and his overall knowledge and confidence and he took us to so many spots spread throughout so many locations (snorkeling coral, sea turtles, shipwrecks; private beaches; pizza boat stop or just hanging in the lagoon for a beer) that it made this the highlight of our incredible vacation, THANK YOU JUSTIN!!

Can not say enough about St Thomas Boat Rental, John, Captain Daniel and Jermaine made the day an easy and carefree way to see the islands. For cruise ship passengers who haven't figured it out yet, this is the only way to truly see the islands. Jermaine will get you to the dock, John will get you on the boat and Captain Dan will give you a historical, sightseeing and bar hopping day that you cannot believe until you experience it. Professionals, from the cab to the boat proprietor to Captain Dan (sorry partial to him). Away from the droves of tourists and the normal tourists hot spots. What a relaxing and fun day out on the water. Can't recommend Captain Bryan enough. Captain Bryan took us to secluded beaches on St Thomas, snorkeling with sea turtles at water island and after some cruising the beautiful waters brought us to a wonderful lunch at Pizza Pi for a fun experience. Even managed to sneak in a little extra time to explore and snorkel a little ship-wreck in Christmas cove. What a great day. Thanks for your patience and your knowledge of the island Captain Bryan.

Our sailing excursion was wonderful! Shana was excellent with communication ensuring we knew exactly where to meet for the excursion and that we were back in time to catch our ship. The sailing was beautiful and relaxing! Snorkeling at St James was fantastic and the food was delicious. We would highly recommend booking your sailing excursion with them.

Laurie’s staff, Ian and Sara were phenomenal!! This was our first time to St .Thomas and we had no idea where to go. They offered up an itinerary in place for us to maximize the fun and sight seeing. Extremely helpful and the boat itself was a thing of beauty!! More than enough space for the 8 of us not including the 2 crew staff. Would highly recommend booking with Laurie if you’re looking for a really nice boat and want to be treated like a rockstar!!!

My wife and I have been in St. Thomas on our honeymoon and were recommended Stormy Pirates charters for a fun day on the water. We ended up taking the 7 hour sea turtle snorkel and sunset sail tour with Brandon and Amanda and had a freaking blast! The boat was beautiful, the trip was better than described and the crew showed us a fantastic time. 10/10 would recommend and we will absolutely be coming back! Thanks guys!

My husband and I had the best time on this excursion. This was by far the highlight of our trip!! We got to see different islands and learn so much history about St John and St Thomas. The crew also had snorkel gear so we could snorkel each island we stopped at, we saw a sunken ship, sea turtles, stingrays. The crew was OUTSTANDING, Kenny and Susanna went above and beyond and made the best cocktails. This was such a wonderful experience!! Highly recommend stormy pirates. (I even changed my pick up from st Thomas to St. John and they were so accommodating)

What a way to spend a day. Met the crew at the dock, jumped on the boat, and had the time of our lives for the day. A couple of snorkel stops, a little sightseeing of the beautiful island of St. John, and then lunch at Lime Out Taco Bar. Lime Out was an excellent experience floating in the clear water surrounded by a beautiful area and eating some great tacos. This was my second trip with Stormy Pirates, and I brought the entire family as my first trip with them was great. Thanks to the crew for making this a day to remember.

We had an amazing time on their Sale Pending 2 boat. Captain Rich was funny and a really good Captain, we knew we were in good hands and safe. Tara, the crew member was so authentically attentive and caring. We had drinks all day long, sodas, water, punch, cocktails. They had fruit and muffins waiting, a scheduled pizza delivery on the boat, snorkeling equipment and the knowledge the guests needed to find sea creatures. So many small detailed extras to make the day superb!

However, if you are a novice sailor, springtime will provide easier sailing conditions.

Best time for sailing vacation

Typically the winter and early spring months are the best times to sail in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The trade winds are strongest in December, January, February and the beginning of March.
