oyster yacht 46

For boatbuilders, the own-ers rendezvous has become a key selling venue. Owners share camaraderie, adventure, and competition, but more important for the builders, the attendees get firsthand exposure to recent-and, the builders hope, bigger-versions of the brand these captive clients love. Such events can carry risk, though. Animated discussions over dinner can lead to exchanges about performance or execution shortfalls, or-worse still for the builders-owners sharing stories of how they beat down the price of equipment.

Britain’s Oyster Marine joined the rendezvous game five years ago and has enjoyed considerable success gathering owners for casual racing, golf, and bread breaking in popular cruising locales around the world. The 2006 Montpelier Oyster Regatta last summer in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, provided plenty of what Oyster and the owners attending had hoped for: good racing, good social events, and good boat chat. For many, including me, the event provided a first look at the new Oyster 46, which was introduced at the 2005 London Boat Show and was due to make landfall in the U.S. at the 2006 U.S. Boat Show in Annapolis, Maryland. I had the opportunity to steer the boat in a good breeze for much of a 23-mile race in the Solent and found it nimble, easily managed shorthanded, and in step with Oyster’s reputation for building premium, well-found, semicustom cruising boats.

The 46 replaces the stalwart Oyster 45 as the “entry-level” model in the line, which currently extends up to 82 feet. The 46 is faster, more spacious belowdecks, and, with Oyster’s new styling scheme, prettier than its predecessor.

“There are major changes in several areas over the 45,” says Oyster chairman Richard Matthews of the new 46. “First is the new G5 styling.”

G5 denotes the fifth generation of Oyster deck-saloon boats. The signature element is the profile view of the deck saloon, which emphasizes double curves and contours over the boxier look of years past. The 46 and the recently launched Oyster 655 and 72 were designed from the ground up with those elements in place. The decks on the rest of the line have been redesigned and retooled to reflect the changes.

“The hull has also been updated with more beam, especially aft, a longer waterline, and a fully optimized keel with a low center of gravity,” says Matthews.

Although he builds boats primarily intended for cruising, Matthews is an inveterate racer, and while few would mistake an Oyster for a grand-prix product, improving the performance specifications on the boats is an ongoing concern. Oyster performance-enhancing duties have fallen on designer Rob Humphreys in recent years. Humphreys, who’s designed a number of notable raceboats, including Ellen MacArthur’s Open 60 Kingfisher, and the Oyster design team have created a hull shape they say provides a marked improvement in speed and stability over the 45, while also accommodating 15 percent more interior volume.

The 46 carries 2 feet 7 inches more waterline length than the 45, 6 inches more beam, 3,600 pounds more displacement, and 186 square feet more sail area. Humphreys, who was primarily responsible for the boat’s lines, gave it a modern shape with a fine entry and flatter sections aft. His intention was to provide speed and stability while accommodating the three-stateroom plan and owners’ load-carrying needs. Humphreys says the keel, a filleted bulb, is an evolution of many of the cruising keels he’s done for Oyster and others. The rudder is skeg-hung.

“The 46 is powerful, but stands to the sails like a bigger boat,” says Humphreys.

During the race on the Solent last summer, I found the 46 to be-dare I say of a cruising boat?-exhilarating to sail. The breeze was southwest at about 14 knots; the sky was layered in gray and white with intermittent showers about. I was aboard Solway Mist, which Oyster delivered to owner John Maxwell during the regatta. Maxwell was generous enough to concede the wheel to me for nearly half the race.

The Solent is a labyrinth of fast, tricky currents, and the zigzag course to the west of Cowes had us on every point of sail working the tide at every possible angle. The first leg was down current. I found the boat to be exceptionally stiff and weatherly, able to hold speeds of 6.5 to 7 knots with an apparent-wind angle of about 40 degrees. I expected to get wet, but with the boat’s generous freeboard, the only hosing we got was from the rain showers. While the decks weren’t slippery, the hull certainly was. By the first weather mark, we’d dusted most of the competition in our class.

Oyster offers an in-mast furling main, but Solway Mist was equipped with a fully battened main, roller-furling genoa, and asymmetric spinnaker. With some effort, we were able to carry the asymmetric on a short close-reaching leg, which produced the highest speeds of the afternoon. We sailed most of the leg at speeds above 8.5 knots. Solway Mist has the standard 7-foot-1-inch deep keel, which certainly contributed to the boat’s strong upwind performance; a shoal-draft model, with a draft of 5 feet 9 inches, is also available.

Maxwell’s previous yacht was an Oyster 56, which he says was a bit much for his wife and him to handle without crew. The 46 is a three-cabin, two-head boat, which Maxwell says is ideal for his intended uses, which he hopes will include some long-term cruising and passagemaking. The deck layout and the sailhandling systems are designed with a cruising couple in mind. The halyards, reefing lines, outhaul, topping lift-and mainsheet, if the owner chooses to have it there-lead under the coachroof to stoppers under the spray hood. Maxwell’s setup included electric primary and mainsheet winches, with the mainsheet just outside the cockpit coaming within easy reach of the helm. Bulwarks with teak caprails and uncluttered decks contribute safety and security to the package.

The center-cockpit arrangement Oyster uses provides friendly on-deck entertaining space and, while at sea, good visibility. Oyster says the 46 has 15 percent more cockpit space than the 45, due in part to the additional beam. Maxwell specified a Whitlock collapsible wheel that permits full walk-around access when the boat’s not under way. In addition to a solid complement of communications gear, Maxwell had his helm and nav station set up with Raymarine’s E80 multifunction system. The system, with a secondary display at the helm, provides full charting information, including current direction and velocity relative to our course, which proved particularly useful in the Solent during the regatta.

oyster yacht 46

The interior on the 46 is first-class, as you might expect from a boat in the $1 million price range. The joinery is substantial, well-fitted, and finished to a high level. Maxwell’s interior is teak. I’m a fan, but Oyster also offers lighter finishes, such as cherry and white oak.

Oyster’s widely emulated deck-saloon configuration contributes light and airy headroom below. The broad forward windows, which are larger than those on the 45, open to provide significant ventilation and draw in light. A burled-maple-veneered table folds across the saloon to accommodate dining for six or seven.

Tanks, batteries, and mechanicals are positioned beneath the raised-saloon sole. The tanks are molded into the hull and serve as structural elements while keeping weight near the boat’s center of gravity.

The standard arrangement has a well-setup galley to port and a forward-facing nav station to starboard at the base of the companionway, each with separate access to the master stateroom. The center cockpit allows maximum headroom in the master-a feature that will appeal to anyone who plans to stay aboard for extended periods. The master’s en-suite head has a space-saving aft-facing toilet that’s centered in the enclosure. Given the capacious proportions of the other interior spaces though, the curtained shower stall feels a bit like a Star Trek transporter tube. Owners with large girths won’t appreciate the cold curtain sticking to them while they’re getting ready for an evening ashore.

The midships cabin has bunks, but it might serve better as a workshop for long-haulers. While not nearly as spacious as the master, the forward cabin is comfortable and well-equipped with gear and clothing stowage. The two cabins share a comfortable head with shower.

Oyster builds its hulls of tried-and-true FRP, but with recent designs the company has used a laminate employing vinylester, polyester, and blended resins. The only cored parts of the boat are the deck and other horizontal elements.

The standard engine is a 75-horsepower Volvo diesel mated to a saildrive. Oyster will do a straight shaft if an owner prefers. According to the company, the boat will cruise at about 8 knots under power.

The tweaks that have contributed to the increased interior volume and improved sailing performance are far less dramatic than the latest styling elements, instituted first on the recent Oyster 72. Matthews once described the overlapping curves, tapered side windows, and lower profile of the latest generation of deck-saloon superstructure as “horny.” The look does evoke lusty metaphors. Cowes-regatta attendees used terms such as “sexy” and “kinky” to describe the look of the 46. However you see it, the new design does manage to make the traditional, inherently boxy center-cockpit/deck-saloon profile look downright dowdy. Once upon a time, customers for boats like this were older men who’d sold a business and were off to live the dream. Oyster acknowledges that success is coming earlier in life to many and that the average age of its customers is dropping. The sex appeal of this boat is a direct shot at that demographic.

For Oyster and its owners, the Cowes regatta had the desired effect. Sir Nigel Southward, vice commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron, and his wife were on board Solway Mist for the race in the Solent. His new 46 is due to be delivered in April. As with many at the regatta, he could be seen in a huddle with other Oyster owners discussing specs and performance. The rendezvous was an eye-opener and validated his purchase-and probably delighted Oyster, too.

“It makes me really quite happy to be on this boat knowing what I’ve done,” says Southward of his purchase after his outing on the water. “But I fear I’ve spent a lot of money today.”

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Clabbie Dubh was the first of the new generation of Rob Humphrey designed yachts built by Oyster Marine Ltd.

The Rob Humphreys-designed replacement for the Oyster 45/47, the 46 carries her beam aft, enhancing downwind stability and permitting a much larger owner’s stateroom. Her longer waterline, wider beam and bigger rig add up to a significant improvement in performance. Volvo Penta D2-75  (approx 1500hrs) shaft driven with Maxprop.

Her large centre cockpit benefits from the extra beam and lessons learnt from ergonomic studies and years of sailing experience. Good headroom throughout with a three-cabin accommodation layout, which allows six to sleep in comfort, without recourse to the saloon. Twenty-nine 46s were launched between 2005 and 2012, when the design was further tweaked to create the 475. She was built and launched for the owner in June 2005. She had in the region of £200,000 of additional equipment added to her original specification during her build. She has been lightly used in Scotland and the Mediterranian, since her launch.

Clabbie Dubh is set up for short handed sailing, with all controls coming back to the cockpit. While she is big enough to sail oceans and has been built to comply with the requirements in the European Union’s Recreational Craft Directive (EURCD) to meet Design Category A – “Ocean” she is also small enough to have access to most marinas.

Additional, but not exhaustive list of equipment etc. added to the original specification:

Raymarine navigation electronics, including Chart Plotter (with repeater in cockpit), GPS, Radar, AIS receiver. Autopilot. Lifetags. Bowthruster. Electric winches. Davits. Shaft drive ( NOT  saildrive). Feathering Maxprop. Storm jib with removable inner forestay. Cruising Chute. Mastervolt 5Kva generator. Inverter. Battery charger. Water maker. Dive compressor. Bimini. pushpit seats. Additional cupboard and drawer storage. Additional access to Aft Heads from navigation centre, (essential when sailing on passage). Matching wood surround to ports in main saloon. lightweight Rib with 9hp outboard.

Boat Review: Oyster 46

The new 46 handled the light morning breeze well and was soon catching boats that had started ahead of us. Once clear of Narragansett Bay, the course led eastward to Cuttyhunk. The turn at R2 and R2a brought the wind abeam and then onto our quarter, so we were able to hoist the asymmetrical chute for optimum speed. We were one of the first boats to get a big sail up and drawing, so we cleared the last turning mark in third position and soon slipped away into first place.I am not sure what was going on aboard the other boats, but we had Thales heated up and really sailing quickly. It seemed we had a knot or more of speed on everyone behind us, except the lovely Oyster 72 Magrathea, who was picking her way steadily through the fleet and catching us. A mile or so from the finish line, Magrathea pulled abeam and then slid by under the press of her huge spinnaker to cross the line a few minutes ahead of us. Thales soundly thumped the rest of the fleet, much to the delight of her owners and crew.

LIVING ABOARD  The 46 has been designed from the keel up to be a comfortable couple’s cruising boat that can accommodate children and visiting friends. The cockpit is where we live most of time in good weather and a lot of attention has gone into the ergonomics. The mainsheet traveler is mounted aft, where it is handy to the helm but out of the way. The seat backs are high enough for comfortable lounging, and the forward end of the cockpit is neatly shaped to be comfortable for nestling under the dodger with a good book, as Jean did a good part of our trip to Cuttyhunk. One benefit of a center cockpit arrangement is a large afterdeck, where Oyster has built seats in the stern pushpits. These are excellent places for relaxing and chatting with friends. Underfoot on the afterdeck is a huge lazarette where you can store lines, fenders and toys. And, the stern swim platform is large enough for two to stand and shower after a day in the water. The raised deck saloon design creates a huge area amidships that has a curved dinette to port and a bench settee to starboard. The dinette’s table folds out to reach the settee so you can seat at least five comfortably. The chart table is to port and down one step, with enough surface area to spread out a chart and ample cabinet area for mounting electronics and radios. Just aft of the chart table, a door leads to the master head and shower, which can double as a wet locker for foul weather gear.

BWS THOUGHTS I have visited the Oyster plants in England and seen how the builders craft these yachts. The boats are built to the highest standard, designed to sail well and be great floating homes.More than that, an Oyster is built to cross oceans even if her owners are not. The hulls and decks are constructed to withstand whatever the sea throws at them. The rigs are conservatively set up and fitted with the best equipment so they will meet rising winds safely and carry a press of sail when necessary. The engineering and electrical systems are installed with exacting attention to detail and in the knowledge that the marine environment can be unforgiving on all things mechanical; everything is labeled and protected from the environment.

Hull And Deck

The Oyster 46 hull and deck is molded in GRP from female molds built by Oyster in their own facility under the designers' supervision, ensuring a fair and accurate finish.

The hull and deck structure are molded in GRP under controlled conditions; laminating is carried out by hand to high standard. Hull and deck moldings are produced using a Lloyd's approved gelcoat and laminating resin. On the hull the gelcoat is a special Isophthalic resin and the outer laminates incorporate a vinylester resin and powder-bound mats.

This combination provides exceptional UV, weathering and water resistance properties.

Deck Structure

The Oyster 46 deck is designed to the New G5 styling. The modern flowing lines again set new industry standards with sleek looks both outside and in, whilst maintaining the Oyster trademark and reputation for a light and airy Deck Saloon.

Molded in GRP with a balsa core for strength and insulation. In loadbearing areas the core is replaced with premium grade Marine plywood for additional strength. All load-bearing fittings have additional backing plates and or large washers.

The foredeck houses a chain locker accessed via twin, hinged lids, one of which is fitted with a lifting handle and the other with a positive catch. This locker drains directly overboard and has a S.S. U-bolt fitted for attachment of the chain's "bitter" end.

Within the aft deck, to port, is a locker, which will allow the stowage of two 10lb Propane gas cylinders. This locker drains overboard at both high and low levels and has a hinged flush lid.

Central, in the aft deck, is a lazarette locker with a positive closing hatch. This gives access to a full width storage area for the usual equipment that may be carried.

Hull and Deck Connection

The hull/deck connection is achieved by the deck sitting on a return flange molded into the hull. The hull to deck joint is sealed and glued with a high performance adhesive and secured with S.S. fastenings. The completed joint is covered with a varnished teak cap rail.

Cockpit Features The cockpit is self-draining through 2 x 2" (50mm) diameter drains fitted with S.S. grilles.

Deck Finishes Side-decks, aft deck, inboard coach roof panels forward of the mast and aft of the mainsheet track, cockpit seats and sole are all trimmed with laid teak. The teak decking is laid in 2" (48mm) wide (approximately) teak planking, using quarter-sawn planks laid on epoxy glue, with no visible fastenings. Outboard areas of fore and aft coach roofs and the deck saloon roof, are painted with International non-slip deck paint, color White.

The deck saloon is extremely light and airy with seven windows, the forward outboard pair of which open. A feature opening hullport each side allows visual contact with the outside whilst seated and contributes to the great feeling of space and light in the saloon.

The saloon table is designed to form, in its closed position, an occasional table, which is mounted on a very substantial pedestal base. Stowage for wine and spirit bottles is incorporated into the pedestal.

This table has a fold-over upper leaf, which opens onto a removable support strut, to allow both sides of the saloon to be used for seating whilst dining.

Access to the saloon from the companionway is down a removable set of timber steps, which are shaped and fitted with timber grab rails. A vertical drop-down acrylic washboard is installed in a vertical channel, which in turn drains to the bilge. Flush fitting locks enable the washboard to be set at two different heights.

Incorporated into the accommodation are a number of grabrails, including one on the inboard fore-and-aft edge of the saloon tabletop.

The galley features a stainless steel "larder" front-opening refrigerator, aft to port, incorporating fiddled shelves for ease of use. The stove and sinks are set into work surfaces on opposing sides of the galley. This makes for a very practical, sea-going layout that is combined with excellent storage space. The sinks discharge directly overboard, via a pump, through a seacock.

The following features are included:

  • All horizontal galley work surfaces are covered with satin finish Avonite. These surfaces incorporate Avonite fiddles.
  • Twin stainless steel sinks are fitted to the galley work surface under the cockpit.
  • A trashcan is fitted inside a locker door forward of the cooker. A gimballed Force 10 FT63451 stove in stainless steel with 4 burners, grill and oven is fitted, all protected by a flame failure gas cut-off device. The stove incorporates an electronic ignition system.
  • An electric solenoid switch for the gas shut-off valve is fitted adjacent to the cooker. Outboard of the cooker is a hullport, which may be opened for added ventilation when at anchor.
  • A fiddle rail incorporating a pair of adjustable clamping pan-holders is fitted around the top of the cooker. A harbour lock and cooker crash bar are fitted and the cooker is housed in a moulded GRP surround with radiused corners for ease of cleaning. The standard Oyster Wedgwood bone china crockery is stowed in the locker at the aft end of the port saloon settee. The coolbox is a white moulded GRP laminate with a drain plumbed into the bilge.
  • The refrigerator is fitted with removable shelves and has a drain plumbed to the bilge area. An auto-door light operates within the box.
  • A Yanmar 4JH4-TE, 4-cylinder, 75Hp (55kW) at 3200rpm, turbocharged diesel engine with an SD50, 2.32:1 Saildrive gearbox.
  • The engine is located centrally, under the cockpit and galley sinks. The engine room is insulated with a composite of foam and high-density polymer sound absorbing materials, with an overall panel thickness of approximately 40mm.
  • The engine room has a service light installed. An extractor fan is installed and switched at the DC electrical panel. This fan is designed to be used either during sustained running in hot climates and/or to evacuate hot air from the engine space, after the engine has been shut down.
  • An automatic fire extinguisher is installed with a remote indicator light
  • Cooling water is taken in via the S-Drive strut, obviating the need for a separate seacock. This installation benefits from an extremely low level of noise and vibration transmission to the hull structure.
  • Start and Stop buttons are fitted on the steering pedestal, to avoid having a key in the cockpit. Throttle and gear controls are single lever, Lewmar Morse-type, installed on the starboard side of the pedestal.
  • Engine instrumentation is integrated into the Garmin display at helm.
  • The engine is fitted with an 80 Amp 12v alternator.
  • Type: Inboard
  • Fuel Type: Diesel
  • Propeller Type: 3 Blade
  • Feathering Propeller
  • Aft Cabin with Double Centerline Island Berth
  • Port Forward Upper and Lower Single Berths
  • Traditional V Berth Cabin forward
  • Total Cabins: 3
  • The aft cabin features a Centerline Island Berth, with a settee and dressing table, a hanging locker, with drawer and locker space. There is a mirror forward of the dressing table seat. Within this cabin there is a bookshelf outboard to port.
  • Twin hullports provide light and ventilation when lying to anchor. From this cabin there is access to the aft toilet and shower. This incorporates a head, washbasin, mirror, stowage lockers and shower area with curtain and a separate shower tray. A hullport, or an overhead portlight in the coaming, may be opened, when not sailing, to ventilate this compartment.
  • All sleeping cabin windows have curtains made from fabric from our standard range. Overhead tracks are concealed as part of the headlining system. All berths have new custom foam mattresses and custom fitted sheets.
  • Forward accommodation consists of a double cabin with V-berth in the bows, provided with an infill piece and cushion, under-berth stowage, accessed through the berth bottoms, and a hanging locker.
  • Aft and to port of this is a twin guest cabin with upper and lower berths, clothes lockers and a hanging locker. Each forward cabin has a mirror installed.
  • The two forward cabins share a WC compartment to starboard incorporating a head, washbasin, mirror, stowage lockers and a shower area with curtain.
  • The saloon features an L-shaped settee area and table on the port side. To starboard is a two-seater settee. The port settee forms a useful seaberth, when used with the lee-cloth provided.
  • The table features a matching fold-over leaf, supported by a removable strut. This allows both sides of the saloon seating to be used for dining.
  • The chart area faces forward at the aft, starboard end of the saloon, allowing the navigator to be comfortable whilst sailing, without intruding into saloon space. The chart table can accommodate several half-folded, full size, Admiralty charts.
  • Fuel supply is from a 198 US gallon (750 liter) approximately, GRP tank installed under the port deck saloon sole.
  • Tank contents may be checked using a calibrated dipstick (provided) installed within its own access fitting.
  • The fuel tank is fitted with a number of Polyvent 9.5" (240mm) diameter removable screw-down inspection covers with 'O' ring seals, to facilitate periodic maintenance.
  • A special tool for opening and closing the Polyvent covers is included within the vessel's loose equipment. The tank has its own remote deck filler on the side deck and a breather at the transom.

Bilge Pumping System

The bilges throughout the vessel are limbered into a deep central bilge sump.

  • Electric bilge pump - Jabsco Utility Puppy 3000 - with Hydro Air switch. This pump is rated at 13.2gpm at 10ft total head.
  • A 3-position switch is fitted to allow Off/On/Auto operation.
  • Whale Gusher 10 MkIII manual bilge pump, operated from the cockpit and fitted with a metal deck plate.
  • Each bilge pump is fitted with a Whale type filtered strum box of the appropriate size for that suction line.
  • All suction lines can be lifted to enable debris to be cleared

Greywater System

Each heads compartment is fitted with an electric Whale Gulper pump which is operated by a waterproof rocker switch and evacuates water from the washbasin & shower directly overboard.

The galley sinks discharge with an electric Whale Gulper pump, which is operated by a waterproof rocker switch.

Freshwater System

Water supply is from a 172 US gallons (650 liter) approximately, GRP tank installed under the starboard deck saloon sole.

The GRP water tank is coated internally with inert gelcoat, fitted with baffles and provided with Polyvent covers, as per the fuel tank. The tank has a remote deck filler and, as the fuel tank, also has an individual breather at the transom.

Hot water is obtained from an insulated, approximately 11 US gallons (50 liters), tank heated by the engine's heat exchanger. A thermostatically controlled 110v, 1.25kW immersion heater element is installed, to run off AC shore power, when connected.

Electrical System

D.C. Electrical System

  • The yacht's DC electrical supply is 12volt. 4 x lithium ion batteries that provide  approximately 460 Amp hours for the domestic supply.
  • Two separate 88 Amp hour (approximately) 12v batteries are devoted to engine and generator starting.
  • All batteries are positively secured against inversion in the case of a knockdown. Battery gas escapes via ducting to the exterior.
  • Batteries are charged by the engine's 12v/80 Amp alternator via a diode isolator.
  • In addition to alternator charging, the batteries can be charged by a 24 Volt Mastervolt 100 amp charger, which feeds from 110v from dockside power or Fisher Panda Mini 8 Generator with approximately 200 hours.
  • All electrics are connected to appropriately sized circuit-breakers incorporated into a central, separate DC panel. Spare circuit-breakers are provided to allow a reasonable number of additional electrical, or electronic, options to be fitted.

Amelia Ryan, who owns and operates the line with her husband, Capt. David Ryan, says the cruises explore a world beyond the chic resort community. “All of that falls away when you are out on the water with the sounds of the wind, the waves and the natural beauty,” which occasionally includes dolphin sightings, Ryan says. Passengers can bring their own lunch and beverages on a two- to three-hour private sail (starting $250) through early October, and there's plenty of time to take a plunge into the water from the vessel's swim ramp and paddleboards (life jackets provided).

The Long Island Maritime Museum's historic oyster sloop Priscilla hosts two-hour cruises on the Great South Bay. Some sails have included options for lunch or dinner at The Snapper Inn restaurant in Oakdale. Sails include plenty of narration that covers the ship's history among a 500-boat fleet that plied the South Shore bays for oysters. The vessel was retired in the 1960s and restored in 2002. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

From botanical gardens to plant sales and garden tours, it’s time to make like the Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz” and while away the hours, conferring with flowers.

In conversation with Adrian Newey and Eddie Jordan

F1's Adrian Newey Reveals Future Plans | Oyster Yachts

Oyster Yachts hosted an exclusive interview during the weekend of the Historic Monaco Grand Prix, at the Yacht Club de Monaco.

Taking centre stage in front of an audience of F1’s greatest names – including former World Champion driver Mika Häkkinen and McLaren Racing CEO Zac Brown – the pair discussed the future of Newey’s career both on and away from the Formula 1 track.

In a candid conversation moderated by Newey’s good friend and manager Eddie Jordan, they delved into his remarkable F1 career, why he chose Oyster to build his dream Oyster 885 sailing yacht and approached the obvious and hot question of the minute – “What next?”

Reflecting on the future, Newey expressed a desire to continue pushing engineering and personal boundaries past retirement age, drawing inspiration from motorsport legends like Bernie Eccleston and Roger Penske. He said: “I feel a bit tired at the moment… But at some point, I’ll probably go again”

While addressing the decision to transition away from the fast-paced trackside life of Red Bull Racing’s F1 team, towards a slower pace of life sailing on board his bluewater Oyster 885 sailboat, Jordan emphasised a phenomenal career track record of twenty-five wins – 13 Drivers and 12 Constructors World Championships to date.

The pair drew parallels between their hobbies, expressing a love of sailing as Eddie Jordan also owns a luxury bluewater sailing yacht – the Oyster 495. Newey described the “purity of sailing” and its allure, with the potential for personal rejuvenation away from the high-stakes environment of motorsport.

In our film Adrian Newey, Building My Oyster , Newey discusses the rationale behind choosing the Oyster to build his bluewater sailboat. He said “I’ve got to the age now where I’ve really fancied spending time sailing and properly developing it as a hobby and a passion… [it’s] something I can take forward as I start to have a little bit more time available” and described choosing the Oyster 885 as “relatively easy choice” and one “that ticked all the boxes”.

With his stellar career background in design and engineering, Newey had significant involvement in elements of the boat design. Working alongside Oyster experts, he implemented structural changes to add space to the swim platform and also designed a hard-top solar bimini. He admits: “one of the more time-consuming choices for us was how we wanted to do the interior… trying to come up with something that we will be happy to live with for weeks or months at a time.”

Returning to his career in motorsport, he said: “The beauty about motor racing is that there’s only two things that count – how quick it is and whether it’s reliable or not. Building a live-aboard sailing yacht is much more subjective in terms of the overall pleasure versus performance and useability.”

Oyster. The interior on the 46 is first-class, as you might expect from a boat in the $1 million price range. The joinery is substantial, well-fitted, and finished to a high level. Maxwell's interior is teak. I'm a fan, but Oyster also offers lighter finishes, such as cherry and white oak.
