The ECO 6 fits into the ECOnomy range of catamarans offered by K-designs. These models are proposed in the form of plans, to be self-built in plywood/glass/epoxy.

The stated objective is to have a proper cruising boat at a low price - the cost of materials for the hull shouldn’t exceed €4,000, then count on another 3,500 for deck fittings, interior and installing a full rig, and buying yourself a small outboard. The extra 50 cm (18”) compared to the ECO 5.5 provides more living space - thanks to the raised deck, something surprising for a catamaran only 2.84 m (9’4”) in beam. There is a saloon that can be converted into a double berth – positioned athwartships -, a galley in the starboard hull and a single berth - accompanied by a heads compartment (with a door!). The maximum headroom is 1.64 m (5’5”) at the entrance into the nacelle. The architect is proposing two different sail plans: traditional sloop or gunter-rigged.

Technical specifications:

Architects: K-designs

Length: 6 m (19’8”)

Beam: 2.84 m (9’4”)

Displacement: 360 kg

Mainsail area: 15 m² (161 sq ft)

Genoa: 5.8 m² (62 sq ft)

Code 0: 18 m² (194 sq ft)

Engine: 6 hp outboard

Cost of the plans: € 180

The yacht design firm of C/S/K

An appreciation of the catamarans designed and built by the firm of C/S/K—or Rudy Choy, Warren Seaman and Alfred Kumalae.

The yacht design partnership of C/S/K was responsible for some of the finest ocean sailing catamarans ever built. The firm was active in the 1960’s - a decade of creative innovation everywhere - but especially in the amped up cultural milieu that was California.

They rode a remarkable wave of opportunity that embraced the California "surf" lifestyle, the public desire for modern "Jetsons" technology, and the South Seas "Tiki" fad that swept the country - From Trader Vic’s to Gilligan’s Island.

C/S/K was an authentic member of the great California wave. It was a part of the movement—a trend setter, not a follower. The firm had a unique caché, with Hollywood movie stars and LA elite for customers. Nevertheless, every wave finally breaks and so did C/S/K - a result of an economic recession at the end of the 1960’s - but not before designing and building about a hundred beautiful catamarans. Unlike the concurrent home-built multihull movement (exemplified by Arthur Piver) C/S/K cats were yachts - built to the highest standards. Their fit, finish and price was in line with other top yachts of the era. They were campaigned by wealthy owners who spared no expense - from a top drawer sail inventory to matching Aloha shirts for the crew.

C/S/K was a perfectly American partnership, being made from a native Hawaiian, a Korean-American, and a New Jersey Anglo Saxon. They were all brought together by a love for the Pacific ocean and sailing, an appreciation for the canoes of the Pacific Islanders, and a drive for excellence. I consider them a gift to sailing; the ‘ Sparkman & Stephens’ of multihulls. In the best tradition of patronage, their visions were made real by people who appreciated their innate passion and ability. Like modern day Michelangelos, it granted them remarkable freedom to create what they really wanted.

Comparing a California yacht design firm to Renaissance artists is maybe a stretch, but I don’t think so. The 1960’s were in every sense of the word a Renaissance of American culture. The Italian Renaissance artists not only painted and sculpted. They invented new pigment technology and ways to apply them (plywood, fiberglass cloth and polyester resin). They explored radical new themes (multihulls). They were drawn to classical traditions outside and older than themselves (ancient Polynesia). They practiced in a defined geographical location that amplified their creativity (California). They attracted wealthy and influential patronage (Hollywood movie stars), and they were charged with the idea that they were part of something new and worthwhile.

The C/S/K legacy continues today at Choy Design in Hawaii - with Rudy’s son Barry Choy at the helm.

Some C/S/K Cats

What yacht represents the "Sistine Chapel" of C/S/K? Well, I’m not qualified to say, but I am presenting my personal favorites.

Manu Kai - 1947

A forebear of C/S/K, the 38’-6" Manu Kai was designed and built in Hawaii by Woody Brown. Woody was inspired by the sailing canoes he had seen in the the Pacific during his tour of duty in WWII. His knowledge of aerodynamics and lightweight glider construction led to the remarkable cross-pollination of cultures that resulted in the first catamaran of the modern era. Woody was a Waikiki Beach Boy, along with Alfred and Rudy, so this catamaran was the catalyst for all that came after.

Aikane - 1957

Owned by Ken Murphy and the first big cat design of Rudy Choy, The 46’ Aikane was a resounding success - being first to finish in the 1957 Newport/Ensenada and the Trans-Pac. Aesthetically, She continued the style of the Waikiki beach boats, but in a newly refined manner that created a taut and beautifully balanced design. The bridge deck is a streamlined airfoil shape, and the deck cabin is perfectly proportioned. The sheerline is "just so" and the continuation of the sheer into the marvelous rudder is perfect. Of all the C/S/K designs, this is my favorite.

Patty Cat II - 1964

An exceptionally well-proportioned catamaran, 44’ PC II exemplifies the reverse sheer style of C/S/K. Radically light for its day, PC II still maintained perfectly cruisable interior volume and amenities. She won the 1966 Multihull Trans-Pac.

If anyone has some stories or anecdotes about C/S/K and their boats, please post them in the comments below.

Nothing of any great importance to add, except..nice looking boat. The P95 was the model that I first came across when I became interested in K-designs. I like Bernd Kohler's boats and ideas.

Is there an estimated total cost for the standard plywood construction? The site says foam is 10x more expensive and takes significantly more time.

With a beam just shy of 40 feet, the cat offers a generous amount of space onboard. The first hull is equipped with one giant owner’s suite, two generous VIP cabins, and one twin, but owners can also opt for a five-cabin layout. This particular owner’s suite covers almost half of the main deck and opens onto a private foredeck lounge. The main deck is also home to a well-equipped galley and a customizable aft cockpit, while the upper deck sports an additional forward cockpit, a sky lounge, and the helm. At the stern, the tender garage can transform into a spacious aft beach club with fold-down bulwarks that increase the amount of waterside space. Wider is widely considered to have started the trend of fold-out platforms for yachts.

Maggi says eight other hulls are under construction at the yard in Fano. Following the unveiling of the first hull in Venice, Wider will release a four-episode web series detailing the evolution of the pioneering multihull. The WiderCat 92’s worldwide debut is scheduled for the Cannes Yachting Festival this September.

rossinavi’s first hybrid-electric AI catamaran ‘M/Y seawolf X’ resembles a sports car on water

Rossinavi’s m/y seawolf x is a hybrid-electric ai catamaran.

For the first time, Rossinavi brings out a hybrid-electric catamaran named M/Y Seawolf X, powered by artificial intelligence . The Italian builder developed its own onboard artificial intelligence system called ‘Rossinavi AI’ which, as the company says, can learn from observation and predict the needs of the guests on board. It can help the crew members by advising them what to do to allow for conscious cruising and may lend a hand to the captain on what mode they should use in navigation or the current water situation.

The Rossinavi AI is believed to be able to monitor the hybrid-electric catamaran’s battery pack too, keeping it within the range of 20 and 80 percent so that its life can be extended. M/Y Seawolf X also prides itself on a long cruise, depending on the type of travel. On day trips, it can cruise in full electric mode. On multi-day trips, it can go on as an electric catamaran for 90 percent of the time, while 80 percent during transatlantic trips. When it goes into hibernation mode, it reduces its consumption to a minimum on its own.

Solar panels to generate green energy for cruising

Rossinavi’s first hybrid-electric catamaran, M/Y Seawolf X, also has solar panels, storing the energy captured from sunlight and returning it to the quay or private property where it is moored by powering or charging up equipment or even an entire villa. The hybrid-electric catamaran can be fully recharged at the shore power in only five hours. The water vehicle also comes with two diesel generators to quickly recharge the batteries. M/Y Seawolf X, and the other recent Rossinavi models, are propelled by batteries and solar panels that can operate in electric mode for day trips 100 percent of the time and sustain electric mode for 80 percent of the time on transatlantic voyages.

a hidden pool and a convertible home theater

Rossinavi taps Fulvio de Simoni Yacht Design for the exterior design and New York-based practice Meyer Davis Studio for the interiors of its first hybrid-electric catamaran, M/Y Seawolf X. Outside, the vessel exudes the look of a sports car. To achieve the style, a sleek and low-profile silhouette is applied, creating an illusion of the two giant wheels with a hollow body below when the guests view the catamaran from its front or rear.

Outside, the vessel has a sloping design, with its full-aluminum structure curving to mimic gentle waves. Stepping inside, Meyer Davis plants outdoor living on the electric yacht, spanning three distinct areas: a cockpit centered around a pool, an expansive sundeck with sunbathing and living spaces, and a bow area featuring a hidden pool and a convertible home theater. As of publishing the story, M/Y Seawolf X is Rossinavi’s first hybrid-electric AI catamaran.

Passage to Siberia: Exploring historic Tyumen

At the beginning of the 20th century, Russian chemist and photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for vivid color photography. His vision of photography as a form of education and enlightenment was demonstrated with special clarity through his images of architectural monuments in the historic sites throughout the Russian heartland.

In June 1912, Prokudin-Gorsky ventured into western Siberia as part of a commission to document the Kama-Tobolsk Waterway, a link between the European and Asian sides of the Ural Mountains. The town of Tyumen served as his launching point for the journey north to Tobolsk, on the Irtysh River.

During his journey, Prokudin-Gorsky took several extraordinarily valuable photographs of both Tyumen and Tobolsk . My photographs of Tyumen and Tobolsk were taken in the late Summer of 1999.

Humble beginnings

Considered the earliest permanent Russian settlement in Siberia, Tyumen was founded in 1586 on the site of a Tatar encampment at the confluence of the Tura and Tiumenka Rivers. The initiative for its creation came from Boris Godunov, the power behind the throne of Tsar Fedor (son of Ivan the Terrible) and, eventually, to become tsar himself in 1598.

Godunov was closely allied with the Stroganovs, who from their commercial center at the northern town of Solvychegodsk had sent a detachment of Cossacks commanded by a certain Yermak deep into Siberia to challenge the power of the ruler of Siberian Tatars, Khan Kuchum. Although the precise dates are open to question, it appears that, in the Fall of 1581, Yermak captured Chingi-Tura (later Tyumen), but abandoned his conquest, in order to proceed straight to Kashlyk, capital of Khan Kuchum, whom Yermak defeated in 1582 during a battle near the Irtysh River.

Following Yermak’s death in a surprise Tatar raid in 1584, his conquests remained temporarily unconsolidated after his death. Nonetheless, Boris Godunov was aware of the enormous significance of Siberia and launched a campaign to found settlements, as he did in other border areas of the medieval Muscovite state.

Like other early Russian Siberian towns, Tyumen originally served as a garrison fortress for Cossacks and other troops, who protected newly developing trade routes in all directions. The eastern connections with China gained particular importance during the 17th century.

Tyumen’s location on the Tura River also provided a direct link westward with the gateway town of Verkhoturye founded by Boris Godunov on the Asian side of the Ural Mountains in 1598. And to the east and north of Tyumen, the Tura River merges with the Tobol, which in turn joins the great Irtysh near Tobolsk. By virtue of its location, Tyumen was destined from the beginning to play a significant role in the Russian development of Siberia.

The opening of Siberia for Russian colonization during the late 16th and 17th centuries was an epic confrontation between the vast distances of this severe land and the enterprise of Russian merchants, whose commercial interests coincided with the tsars’ appetite for eastern expansion. Although its rivers were only tributaries of the Irtysh (itself a tributary of the great Ob River), Tyumen was well situated to utilize Siberia’s vast water network.

When the southern boundary of Moscow’s Asian territory became more settled during the 18th century, Tyumen’s importance increased for the development of transportation as well as small commercial and industrial enterprises. Its status as a transportation nexus also involved the exile system, which sent convicts and political exiles throughout Siberia.

As a regional administrative point for western Siberia, Tyumen rapidly became a center of the Russian Orthodox Church. Its Trinity Monastery was founded in 1616 on the high right bank of the Tura River. Originally dedicated to the Transfiguration, the monastery was a modest collection of log buildings until its transformation in the early part of the 18th century by an energetic Ukrainian prelate, Bishop Fyodor Leshchinsky.

As an ally of Peter the Great, Bishop Fyodor saw architecture as a reflection of a broad cultural transformation and the Church of the Trinity that he built at the monastery in 1709-1715 is Tyumen’s earliest surviving building. Gutted during the Soviet era, the Trinity Church has been renovated (with modifications) together with its neighbor, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1741-1755. Fortunately, Prokudin-Gorsky photographed both shrines in 1912.

These early examples of a provincial baroque style served as a model for other 18th-century churches in Tyumen, culminating with the lavish Cathedral of the Icon of the Virgin of the Sign (Znamensky), which has recently been splendidly refurbished. Built in several phases between 1768 and 1891, the cathedral displays the florid decoration typical of much of Siberian church architecture.

The daunting vastness of Siberia’s reaches gradually submitted in the 19th century to new forms of transportation. The first steamboat to ply a Siberian river was constructed here in 1838.

The greatest impulse for economic growth came with the completion of a railroad from Yekaterinburg, on the east slope of the Ural Mountains in 1885. This line ultimately became an important segment of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, transporting the wealth of Siberia’s forests, mines and new agricultural regions, as well as leather and other products of local factories.

At the turn of the 20th century, over half a million settlers passed through the town toward Siberia’s open, fertile lands. Fortunately, remnants of this period have survived in the central part of the city.

This memory of the past is especially evident in the city’s remarkable wooden houses, with elaborate framed and carved window surrounds in a style specific to Tyumen. These massive window constructions often include carved panels below the sill as an additional decorative and protective device.

Their solid construction allowed rows of large windows in wooden houses even in this harsh climate, thus bringing maximum available light to interiors during the long Siberian winters.

Tyumen today is the capital of an enormous province - stretching from Kazakhstan in Central Asia north to the Arctic Ocean - that is one of the world’s richest energy producing regions. Tyumen has benefited from this bounty of natural resources and is at present one of the few Siberian cities to show major population growth: from slightly over half a million in the 2002 census to some 850,000 in the latest estimate. As usual in Siberian cities, most residents live beyond the historic center in Soviet-era housing developments.

A walk through the historic center of town shows vivid contrasts of modest pre-revolutionary brick and wooden buildings, rarely more than two stories in height, with ponderous Soviet buildings and sleek new commercial centers. Some of the new structures are private apartment houses, others are banks and office buildings and still others form a part of the expanding Tyumen State University.

In the early 20th century, Russian photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for color photography. Between 1903 and 1916, he traveled through the Russian Empire and took over 2,000 photographs with the process, which involved three exposures on a glass plate. In August 1918, he left Russia and ultimately resettled in France where he was reunited with a large part of his collection of glass negatives, as well as 13 albums of contact prints. After his death in Paris in 1944, his heirs sold the collection to the Library of Congress. In the early 21st century, the Library digitized the Prokudin-Gorsky Collection and made it freely available to the global public. A few Russian websites now have versions of the collection. In 1986, architectural historian and photographer William Brumfield organized the first exhibit of Prokudin-Gorsky photographs at the Library of Congress. Over a period of work in Russia beginning in 1970, Brumfield has photographed most of the sites visited by Prokudin-Gorsky. This series of articles juxtaposes Prokudin-Gorsky’s views of architectural monuments with photographs taken by Brumfield decades later.
