FYB provided an amazing service.

FYB provided an amazing service. I had a really frightening experience with a nearly new Volvo Penta marine engine: it wouldn't stop, the starter motor was engaged and running and smoke was pouring from the engine compartment. Despite the fact that I was in the Mediterranean, FYB could not have been more helpful. They quickly (and accurately) diagnosed that it was a problem with the MDI (control unit), checked whether it was covered by a product recall notice (it wasn't) and immediately shipped me a replacement part (the dealers in the Med. said they couldn't get one for weeks - and even then couldn't promise anything because it was out of stock). Jerry could not have been more helpful (and knowledgeable). Sarah, who arranged the replacement part, was efficiency personified. This is the first time I have been moved to submit an online review. I am doing so because they really went the extra mile.

Do not use this company, aka fyb marine

Company also known as fyb marine. Placed an order in March for a Gulsweep £50 and had to pay £12 postage for a express courier, this turned out to be ParcelForce. The parcel was apparently delivered to my address and signed for by me when I was not home (nor was anyone else), parcel is lost or stolen. This company have been nothing but uninterested in my parcel going missing/being stolen, I am told by the sending company "it is out of our hands, we have no responsibility as we sent it with the post office", I said that they had booked this courier (parcelforce) so they had made the contract and it was down to them to chase and sort where my parcel was, fyb think this is not the case and they are happy they did everything ok and thanks for you money. Parcelforce driver lied and said I had asked him to leave the parcel safe, he has never spoken to me (had this confirmed by the depot manager from Parcel farce). It is now August and still no delivery and no refund, parcelforce (in mid May) tell me it is to late for me to make a claim against them, even though on there website it says you have to be the sender to claim from them. FYB marine says they won't claim as it would be rejected and they have done everything they should?? I really am missing something here, what happened to customer service? If there is any chance of anything you order going missing or you having an issue do not use this company, they have only interest in taking your money, be warned. Please Still no response from company! Avoid at all costs! still nothing now near end of October!

What our customers say....

“We have recently used Ross at Red Ensign, Plymouth for our boat sale. We had initially thought to use one of the larger brokerage operators but having discussed it with Ross we decided to go for his more personal approach.

We were not disappointed with a buyer being found and sale concluded in less than a month. Throughout Ross was incredibly attentive and always contactable. As we live someway from the boat he was always on hand to check on the boat and adjust warps fenders etc during gales. Ross is incredibly well networked in the marine industry and was able to give us the benefit of his experience and contacts to assist us in the next step of our sailing journey.

We have bought and sold many yachts over the years but this has been the best experience so far. We would wholeheartedly recommend his services.”

“I used Red Ensign to sell my boat and the service they gave was outstanding. They went way above and beyond what other brokers would do. The team are extremely knowledgeable, helpful and always on hand to give feedback or advice. They sold the boat quickly, got a great price and managed the sale process smoothly. I would not go anywhere else in future – just great professional guys!”

“Excellent service from start to finish. I have sold, and brought a yacht using this very professional company. Very knowledgeable, hard working, honest guys. Highly recommended, hassle free”

Announcements, packet camera club, falmouth boat watch launched to crack down on marine crime.

The Rural Neighbourhood Police Team at Falmouth Police Station has launched a Community Neighbourhood Watch geared for the sailing waters in and around the Fal Estuary.

Boat Watch is fully supported and based on the principals of Neighbourhood Watch and its aim is to bring those involved in boating together to tackle marine crime.

Boating in the Fal Estuary is a popular leisure activity and is enjoyed by many people and there are numerous clubs and associations which, regularly use these waters allied with this there is a thriving local marine industry. Every year thefts of and from boats are reported to the Police and these incidents cause heartache, inconvenience and considerable expense to boat owners.

The Rural Neighbourhood Police Team has created a Sailing Community Network which, has 20 member organisations and these include sailing clubs/associations, marinas, chandlers, yacht brokers, marine services and local harbour masters.

Boat Watch has a staggering initial membership of just over 5,000 members and covers a vast area from the Helford, Falmouth Bay, across to St Mawes, the Carrick Roads and the sailing waters around Truro.

The Rural Neighbourhood Police Team aim to keep in regular contact with the Marine communities, clubs, associations and professional bodies with regular bulletins and details of stolen boats and property.

PC Charlie Staines comments “There is a very simple principle to crime reduction. The more difficult you make life for the criminal, the more likely he or she is to leave your property alone. The creation of our Boat Watch is a key to reducing marine thefts, all of the members will be encouraged to increase their security with simple to implement measures.” He continues “Throughout the country great reductions in marine incidents have been achieved when sailing communities and the Police work together in the fight against criminals, by taking security measures, looking out for each other and reporting suspicious activity to the Police or Harbour Masters.”

Every member of the Boat Watch will be receiving a crime prevention pack, which is relevant to the boating community. These packs will be available from numerous locations and all of the crime prevention devices featured are available locally. Regular crime alerts will be forwarded to members and these will prompt Boat Watch members to be vigilant.

Specially trained Police Officers at Falmouth Police Station are conducting regular marine patrols in the Fal Estuary with partner agencies. In engaging with the sailing community these Police Officers will be promoting membership of the Boat Watch and offering first hand crime prevention advice.

PCSO Paul Woodward comments “The response from the sailing community has been very positive, we anticipate that membership of the scheme will grow and I would be delighted to see every boating enthusiast a member of our Watch.” He continues “In the coming seasons we will be introducing a number of other initiatives with innovative crime prevention devices to further reduce marine incidents.”

The Devon & Cornwall Constabulary are using the launch of Boat Watch to also launch their unique Outboard Engine covers. These security covers are a visible deterrent and further advertise membership of Boat Watch and its principals of reducing marine crime. These covers are available from the Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team at Falmouth Police Station.

To report a marine incident please contact the Police on 08452 777444.

Volvo 120S-E saildrive. Which oil?!!

  • Thread starter BobsFolly

BobsFolly

Hello all, I'm a little confused on what saildrive oil I should be using... It's a 1999 md2020C with a 120S-E saildrive. Should I be using ATF or engine oil?! I found the Volvo service bulletin that recommended changing from ATF to engine oil but it only referred to the 130 and 150 series S Drives. Another source or two online are recommending using 15W-40 engine oil. Does anyone have a definitive Volvo reference for the above saildrive ? Many thanks Bob.

VicS said: The 120S-E is the only one of the whole bunch from the 110S through to the 150S drives which does not now use engine oil It uses a GL5, SAE 75W-90 gear oil See the VP lubrication schedule at http://fybmarine.co.uk/PDF/Saildrive-oil-quantity-type.pdf I am surprised you have it on an MD2020. I thought it was only used on the more powerful engines such as MD22 However I note that the owners manual for the MD2020C lists it as the drive and specifies SAE 15W-40 engine oil .......... I'm confused now. Definitely not ATF anyway Click to expand...

VicS said: If it has gear oil in it I would keep gear oil in it..... it cannot do any harm even if it is not necessary when used with a relatively low power engine Don't know what mechanical differences there are between the "E" version and the others but I am pretty sure 15W-40 would be perfectly Ok for use with an MD2020. I agree, stick with gear oil. I had a helpful chat with Jerry of Falmouth Yacht Brokers he asked for engine and saildrive serial numbers and checked them out with VP. He made the same comment about our 1998 engine beng fitted with the high powered SD. The previous owners had said when they had a professional service they put engine oil in it and it ran like a loose box of spanner’s until he replaced it with gear oil...thereafter, ran sweet as a nut. Very expensive oil but necessary for the unit we’ve got.

Mary Unwin: Hope fades for lone yachtswoman

  • Published 16 October 2012

Ona Mary Unwin

Mary Unwin left Falmouth in the yacht on Friday

Rescue crews searching for missing yacht skipper Mary Unwin admit the chances of finding her alive are slim.

The wreckage of the yacht Seagair was discovered on Monday afternoon near Sennen Cove, west Cornwall, three days after Mrs Unwin, 65, was last seen.

Mother-of-four Mrs Unwin and her husband Carol, from Northam in north Devon, had only just re-married after getting divorced about a year ago.

Coastguards resumed a search on Tuesday morning, before scaling it back later.

Trip warning

A Falmouth Coastguard spokesman said: "It is approaching 24 hours since the wreckage of the vessel, believed to be the Seagair, was first discovered. For someone to have survived overnight would be something close to a miracle.

"Mrs Unwin is still a missing person."

Mrs Unwin bought the £32,000 yacht in Falmouth and was accompanied by her husband.

She left Falmouth in the yacht on Friday despite being advised by the sellers Falmouth Yacht Brokers not to make the trip on her own and without collecting the paperwork.

Seagair

The £32,000 yacht was sold by a Falmouth brokerage on Thursday

On Saturday she left Mousehole at about 18:30 BST to sail to Bideford in north Devon.

Coastguards and the police confirmed the wreckage of a vessel found near Sennen was the Seagair.

Jerry Hobkirk, owner of Falmouth Yacht Brokers, said he would not have let Ms Unwin sail had he known she would have ignored his pleas not to set off until the weather had subsided.

He also said Ms Unwin was advised to embark on a sailing refresher course before taking to the water, something the missing woman also appears to have ignored.

Mr Hobkirk said the 130-mile journey from Mousehole to Bideford would have tested even experienced sailors, let alone in difficult conditions.

He added: "I was amazed when I found out that she had set sail. If I had known, we would have stopped her.

"There were strong winds and rough seas on a piece of coast that has very few escape routes. If you get into difficulties there aren't very many ports to play your 'get out of jail' card with."

Helicopter crews from RNAS Culdrose and RMV Chivenor were also called to help with the search and rescue mission.

Mr Unwin denied his wife was an inexperienced sailor.

He told the BBC: "Before she embarked on the trip she had an expert sailor with her, just to brush up on what she knew.

"He and she were confident about the whole exercise."

Coastguards said that pieces of debris had been washed up in Sennen Cove in Cornwall, but added they had not formally identified them as being part of the missing yacht.
