Damen starts building a 75m yacht support vessel - their largest unit of this product range..

The design of the new 75m Yacht Support vessel reminds of the bold SeaXplorer range by the Dutch shipyard Damen – the mother company of Amels. The project name is YS 7512.

The new vessel will have a helicopter hangar, a lot of additional tenders and toys that can’t be transported by the mother yacht, it accommodates 45 people (guests, additional crew, helicopter pilot et cetera) and environmental equipment. Moreover, YS 7512 can transport emergency relief support equipment in standard freight containers.

Wright Maritime Group consults the custom design and technical development on behalf of the client. When the ship is delivered in 2022, it is the 17th Yacht Support vessel by Damen.

Damen Yachting’s Abeona

Damen Yachting has delivered the support vessel YS 7512, now known as  Abeona  after a Roman goddess of outward journeys and safe returns. The order for the vessel, supposedly from Jeff Bezos, but the information wasn’t confirmed, was received in 2019. The model features customized in-house design based on the YS 75 model in the Damen Yacht Support range. The project on behalf of the client was supervised by Wright Maritime Group.

In January Abeona arrived in Gibraltar after successful sea trials in December. The 75-meter vessel has a beam of 12 meters and a volume of approximately 1,900 GT. She features a helicopter hangar with a D14 value, has state-of-the-art environmental equipment and capacity for containerised emergency relief support equipment together with a wide range of specialized marine gear and tenders. The vessel will be able to accommodate up to 45 people including crew, specialist staff and guests.

She has a top speed of 18 knots and a range of 5,000 miles at 15 knots.

Damen Yachting , a division within the Damen Shipyards Group , was created in 2019. The division combines the pedigree and heritage of Amels yachts with a growing portfolio of SeaXplorer yachts and Yacht Support vessels.

She will also be the largest to date, which I think continues to show the scalability of the support solution for large superyachts. DAMEN signs largest Yacht Support to date

Are large support vessels preferable to the very largest superyachts.

Dutch yacht builder, DAMEN , has signed a new order for a 75m bespoke support yacht, which will be the largest to date when delivered in 2022. The news has been announced just a couple of months after the launch of 46m, YS 4508 model, ‘ Joy Rider ’.

The new 75m signing’s customised inhouse design is based on DAMEN’s newly developed YS 7512 model in the DAMEN Yacht Support range. Wright Maritime Group have provided consultation on the custom design and technical development, and will also supervise the project on behalf of the client.

According to The Superyacht Agency , the average volume of 70-80m yachts is 1,720gt, while DAMEN’s new 75m yacht support will have a volume of approximately 1,900gt, and will hangar a helicopter with a D14 value, state-of-the-art environmental equipment and capacity for containerised emergency relief support equipment, alongside a range of specialised marine gear and tenders. The vessel will reportedly be able to accommodate up to 45 people including crew, special staff and guests.

“She will be the largest [yacht support vessel] to date,” said Rob Luijendijk, director sales at AMELS and DAMEN, “which I think continues to show the scalability of the support solution for large superyachts”. Research by The Superyacht Agency shows a spike in the recent average LOA of the DAMEN fleet and order book, suggesting that these vessels will continue to grow in size, in response to the support required by the mothership.

In our most recent edition of The Superyacht Tenders Report, we consider ‘the rise of the support vessel’ ( available here ) and the growing dependence on them in order to host the increasing number of tenders and toys that the new generation of owners are in favour of.

However, the increasing size of the support vessel, including DAMEN’s new signing, also concurs with the idea that it is more cost effective for owners who require more storage space to purchase a support vessel than a larger motoryacht or superyacht. For example, according to DAMEN, the average 55m superyacht costs around €38.5 million and has a volume of around 707gt with 25sqm of tender and toy storage. By comparison, a 74m vessel will cost around €90.5 million, have a 1,790gt volume and 130sqm of storage space. This amounts to a 235 per cent increase in price, a 1,083gt greater volume and a 400 per cent increase in storage space. However, if one chose to purchase a 55m support vessel rather than a 74m mothership, the initial expenditure would be €13.5, the total volume of the two vessels would be 1,172gt and total storage space would be 250sqm. This represents a capital saving of around €37 million, a 900 per cent increase in storage capacity and a 465gt volume increase.

Last Saturday Amels / Damen Yachting revealed their largest Yacht Support vessel: YS 7512. She arrived 05/08/2021 aboard the SUPER SERVANT 4 for completion.

Put the YS 7512 to work for your favourite ocean yachting activities, deep-sea exploration or marine conservation. The YS 7512 has an ocean preservation lab and sample store, plus accommodation for 4 guest scientists. Additional offices with 4 workstations keep everything organized, with extra staff for security, executive staff, guides, pilots and others.

Carry two large submersibles to share the underwater experience with 12 guests at once, diving up to 1,140 metres deep. The scuba dive store has mixing facilities, decompression chamber and changing areas. You also have a dedicated dive support tender to shadow the subs on the surface, plus all the big luxury tenders, helicopters and toy stores.

Don’t stop at helicopters and hangars. With this custom YS 7512 configuration you can carry a seaplane with a stern lift system for straightforward launch and retrieval. For example a Cessna 208 Caravan Amphibian with an 800 nautical mile range will give you unprecedented access to your support yacht and motheryacht. Plus you also have lots of big tenders and a helicopter on board to make the most of every destination.
