Ballers: Episode 4 Recap
University of Miami
I’ll admit this: Spencer Strasmore handles a hangover much better than I can.
After last week’s outlandish yacht party, Episode 4 of Ballers picks up right where it left off. We’re back on the yacht the next morning, surveying the aftermath of the corporate event. After every big party comes the next morning. The two major emphases for this week’s episode were Spencer and Vernon’s struggling relationship and Spencer’s denial about the concussion issue.
Spencer continues to mishandle the relationship with Vernon because he is mishandling the relationship with Vernon’s childhood friend, Reggie. Reggie continues to believe he knows what is best for Vernon. And actually, as much as Reggie is easy to dislike, his stubbornness regarding Vernon’s pending contract is in good faith. But that doesn’t mean he’s right. Reggie and Vernon are facing a serious roadblock because they are overvaluing Vernon’s worth.
It happens all the time in the NFL, too. The player is having a good career and decides he deserves more money. The player may hold out, not report to training camp or offseason activities and play the negotiating game. But it the end, more often than not, the player was asking for too much and doesn’t get the contract he wanted. In the NFL, it is very rare that holding out ever leads to the bigger contract the athlete wanted. In a league where guys are constantly getting replaced and where injuries are common, you’d better be a bona fide stud if you’re going to try to hold out for more money. Otherwise, an Alfred Morris (sixth-round pick), an Arian Foster (undrafted) or, as we saw in this week’s episode, a Victor Cruz (undrafted) will take your spot and perform for much less money. There’s a fine line between valuing yourself and being greedy.
Yet, Vernon is not wrong in wanting a contract. Ballers is up to speed on this issue. A flaw in the new NFL collective bargaining agreement left rookies with zero negotiating room. Thus, guys like Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck are paid pennies for the first few years compared to their veteran peers. Players in their rookie deals cannot renegotiate their rookie contracts, despite their on-field performance. Russell Wilson went to two Super Bowls in his first three years, but I wouldn’t be surprised if his backup earned more than he did. That’s why you run into some crazy negotiating when players come to the end of their first deal. It’s not surprising or objectively wrong that they want a juicy long-term deal to reward them for their service (See: Dez Bryant).
The problem Vernon is creating lies in how much he wants. (Take the $40 million guaranteed!) Obviously, it is hard to draws comparisons because this is a fictional television show, but the show represents Vernon as a poor man’s Gerald McCoy with the potential to be the best DT in the league within a couple years. Regardless, the figures in his contract are near the ceiling of the league. DTs just don’t make that much money a year unless their name is Suh or McCoy. Ever since Albert Haynesworth’s bank-busting deal , it is simply a rarity.
This is where Vernon/Reggie do not see eye-to-eye with Spencer/Jason, and where Spencer finally begins to see that Vernon may not be the best client to have, even despite the huge potential upside. If Vernon were to accept that deal and Spencer could add that money to his assets under management, then both their worlds would be much better places. But Vernon has already proven himself to be an excessive spender, and Reggie has proven himself to be ignorant to the realities of financial management even as he throws around big words and talks a big negotiating game.
Such a volatile relationship could really end in a lawsuit. Spencer tries to protect Vernon from his money. Vernon spends it all. Vernon sues Spencer for losing all his money. It’s practically a Broadway show at this point. The story has become such a trope. As such, the partnership between Spencer and Vernon seems to be coming to an end.
The second major focus of this week’s episode is Spencer’s battle with the ongoing effects of CTE. There is a lot of debate over the validity of the connection between football and CTE, but in my house, it is a very real thing. Having played football for a long time, I have had my fair share of hits to the head. I have experienced many of the symptoms of CTE. It is scary at times, but it’s easier when you have someone to help walk you through it — for me, it’s my wife and family. On top of that, I’ve been lucky to have people who are incredibly knowledgeable in the neurology field surrounding and supporting me. Concussions are a widespread problem. My wife had to retire from collegiate soccer due to concussions. That, coincidentally, led me to Dr. Gillian Hotz, the director of the University of Miami Concussion Program and one of the leading consultants for HBO’s Ballers . She helped the writers give an accurate depiction of an athlete suffering from CTE.
Denial is a big issue with football and CTE. Most successful athletes have this vision of themselves as indestructible. I know I did. Despite the broken arms and legs, many players believe the psyche can never be touched. That is where the danger lies. People can see broken arms and broken legs, and thus can feel sympathy for the injury. But concussions are an invisible affliction. The denial is helped by the fact that concussions vary in their severity and the symptoms take time — sometimes years — to appear. While you’re playing, denial is a survival mechanism. It keeps you on the field, making money. However, denial only leads to further injury. There have been many advances in concussion research, and thanks to people like Dr. Hotz and my wife, who worked with her, awareness is beginning to spread at a much faster rate than ever before. You have to give credit to Ballers for taking on the issue, and I hope we see more in coming episodes. The way to defeat denial is to address the issue straight on.
Lastly, I want to comment on Joe’s pitch to Victor Cruz. It was the first time that he had talked to one of these athlete prospects in a professional setting. It was good to see the contrast from the yacht party, where he tried to be the athletes’ friend. Despite how we’re often perceived, athletes are not dumb. Yes, yacht parties are fun, but when talking finances, it is better to be honest and forthcoming than to try and win over a client through an alcohol-fueled rager. Joe’s pitch the next morning to Victor Cruz was authentic and honest. Athletes can tell when you’re BS-ing. There’s a time for business and a time for partying.
Check back each week as I dissect each episode as it pertains to football and the financial advisory world. It will be interesting to see how Spencer’s relationship with Vernon/Reggie continues to develop, and I would also love to see Ballers continue to explore this concussion storyline more and more.

'Ballers' Recap: Episode 5, "Machete Charge"
Spencer and Joe get shaken down.
In the world of Ballers , a world that doesn’t pretend to care about showing you a single snap of football, things are coming to a head. Vernon is hounding Spencer to return to his service, especially now that some problematic pictures from the yacht party has surfaced. Ricky, resolved to be the bigger man after a pep talk with Annabella, decides to take Alonzo out for a night on the town where they can solve their problems. Charles, who refuses to delete a particular sext on his phone, gets caught by Julie and storms out with his tail between his legs. Joe, who has successfully courted Victor Cruz, must now move on from that success in order to scramble to get Vernon’s account in Anderson Management’s portfolio, lest the whole enterprise gets axed. This is Ballers , and shit is getting dramatic.
Everyone in the fifth episode, “Machete Charge,” is getting squeezed. Ricky, whose private night on the town turns out to be a trip to the strip club with Alonzo’s entire entourage — thus screening him from talking to Alonzo — isn’t getting an apology or anything he wants. Spencer, who is now resolved to fix Vernon’s situation, finds himself with a worthy adversary — a lawyer who is savvier than he seems at first glance, and one that is demanding $500k for the purchase of pictures featuring Vernon’s illicit activities. Charles takes the coward’s way out, choosing chaos over stability.
In the end, only Ricky finds validation — a parking tryst between Alonzo and a stripper is broken up by a cop before Ricky intervenes to save the day. As for the others, it’s a different story. When the lawyer in the moss-covered mansion shows Spencer a picture of his client, Spencer’s eyes flash with recognition, suggesting that maybe his challenge is something that is achievable.
In the last few episodes, Spencer has come alive, which gives Ballers a certain energy. Compared to the show that precedes it — the listless second season of True Detective — it’s appointment television. As these parallel dramas spin toward their conclusions, we’re all just witnesses.

Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Rob Corddry , Omar Benson Miller
From one of the executive producers behind one of the pay cable network's longest-running comedies, ' Ballers ' is basically 'Entourage' for the football world. Created by Stephen Levinson and director Peter Berg, the series stars The Rock as a retired NFL player trying to navigate his life off the field.

You know the type: the basic- and pay-cable male antihero. Walter White. Don Draper. Dr. John Thackery . Tony Soprano. Those charismatic men of few morals who make being bad alluring, if not downright attractive, even with their occasional gray-zone complications. Usually, they’re played by well-tested character actors who have toiled for years and, suddenly, have a chance to show off the full range of their talent. HBO ’s new sports dramedy , Ballers , tweaks the formula slightly by casting a bona fide movie star as one of these bad-boy antagonists — an inspired choice, as it turns out.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson , currently on the big screen going head-to-head with a megaearthquake in San Andreas , is magnetic as Spencer Strasmore , a retired football superstar trying to make a go of it as a financial manager for Miami athletes. He’s loyal to his friends, who include testy wide receiver Ricky Jerret ( John David Washington ), aimless former lineman Charles Greane ( Omar Benson Miller ) and pushover rookie Vernon Littlefield ( Donovan W. Carter ). But he’s also looking to use these and other connections to build his business with his crude, coke-addict boss, Joe ( Rob Corddry ). In between wheeling and dealing, Spencer also is popping pills (chewing them like breath mints) to deal with a long-ignored injury that’s affecting his neurological functions.

Between that and the mere $200 he has in his bank account, Spencer is in dire straits, though he maintains the facade of being wealth/porn-obsessed, what with his tailored suits, fast cars and buxom gal pals. Johnson, too, revels in his character’s surface qualities, flashing that megawatt grin and rapid-firing his every word like a salesman who has prescient knowledge of his customers’ soft spots. The actor’s natural charisma makes Spencer palatable even at his worst, in scenes — like one in which he patiently sweet-talks Vernon into signing with his fledgling agency — where it’s clear he’s exploiting the friendships he’s developed over the years for his own long-term financial gain.
Johnson’s celebrity magnetism makes for a fascinating contrast with his character’s dark side. Over the course of the first four episodes sent out for review, cracks start to show in Spencer’s veneer that, one suspects, will become full-blown chasms by season’s end. It’s great to see Johnson rise to the dramatic occasion, since, even in his worst roles, there always have been flashes of something deeper. He does a particularly good job portraying Spencer’s reluctance to accept his medical condition, never going for easy sentiment or pathos but allowing his macho-fed stoicism (the way he’ll often hoist his body up from Atlas-shrug slouch to Superman stiff) to speak volumes.

That’s not to take anything away from the supporting players; if Johnson is the quarterback, they’re the necessary fullbacks, tackles and tight ends that make the team whole. Washington is a terrific hothead, forever at the mercy of his temper and boundless ego. (He has a very funny scene in which his coach attempts to teach him a rage-cooling mantra.) Miller and Carter are similarly excellent as two men who are, to varying degrees, coasting on their reputations without further cultivating them. And Corddry is hilarious as Joe, a perpetual devil on Spencer’s shoulder who has the craving for wealth if not the equivalent panache to get it. (In the third episode, he drunkenly and druggily presides over an all-night yacht party that turns spectacularly sour.)
Johnson is still the main attraction, and his multifaceted work here thankfully keeps Ballers , at least for the moment, from becoming Entourage for athletes. Here’s hoping there are no fumbles on the horizon.

Grown-ish Series Finale Recap: Andre Hosts His Dream Graduation Party While Zoey And Aaron Tie The Knot
Grown-ish concludes with a heartfelt series finale as Andre graduates and Zoey and Aaron tie the knot on a yacht.
Grown-ish Series Finale Recap: What happened at the end of Season 6
Zaara brings friends to host a yacht party for andre.
Freeform’s grown-ish ended its run with Junior (Marcus Scribner) unexpectedly celebrating his graduation. He planned a graduation party, but his new boss needed him to tend to a client’s yacht. Aaron (Trevor Jackson), avoiding Zoey (Yara Shahidi) after a rejected proposal, joins him. Their friends turn the yacht into a party scene.
As Grown-ish — and the entire Black-ish franchise — came to an end with its series finale, the last episode began with a nostalgic look back. Marcus Scribner’s character, Andre, reflects on his meaningful moments at Cal U, emphasizing that life's story is written in the moments between big events, with the people who matter most.
After officially graduating, Andre focuses on hosting his dream graduation party. However, his plans are interrupted when Rich Paul calls to tell him his job at Klutch Sports has already started.

Meanwhile, Zoey is in turmoil after walking out on Aaron’s proposal. She is greeted by her college friends, including Nomi, Ana, Vivek, and Doug, who congratulate her, unaware that she didn't accept the proposal.
Even Luca joins via FaceTime, urging Zoey not to marry Aaron. Zoey admits she hasn’t responded to Aaron’s proposal because she is working through her feelings and is afraid of saying the wrong thing.
When Zaara learns that Andre postponed his graduation party to work, she decides to bring the party to him by filling the yacht with friends and drinks just as the boat sets sail. On the boat, Andre and his friends discuss their worries about staying close after college.
Zoey and her friends join the conversation, sharing how their friendships have changed since moving apart. Vivek mentions that Zoey and Ana aren't as close as they used to be, leading Ana to reveal that she and her partner experienced a miscarriage.
Zoey and Aaron finally talk face-to-face. Zoey expresses her fear of putting work between their relationship or making other mistakes but ultimately tells Aaron she doesn’t want to live without him. Aaron proposes again, and Zoey accepts.
Elsewhere on the boat, Andre apologizes to Kiela for being upset about her summer plans in Portugal, and Kiela reassures him. Despite the unauthorized party, Andre’s boss praises him for keeping the boat out of trouble.
To conclude the series, Zoey and Aaron decide to get married right there on the yacht, surrounded by their friends and family.

SPOILER ALERT! This post contains details from the series finale of Freeform ‘s grown-ish .
It’s the end of an era.
Freeform’s grown-ish ended its run Wednesday night after six seasons with Junior (Marcus Scribner) celebrating his graduation in a bit of an unexpected way.

Their friends have other ideas, though. Before long, this stranger’s yacht is filled to the brim with 20-somethings and bottles of alcohol.
Junior spends much of the party pretty frantically trying to make sure his boss doesn’t find out that he’s throwing a party on their client’s boat without permission. But, unfortunately for him, there are cameras. On the bright side, his boss is somehow not at all upset about this unsanctioned party, because Junior did technically tend to the boat as he was asked.
This whole situation also puts Zoey and Aaron in an awkward situation, as they’re now stuck on this boat together. Pretty quickly, Zoey tries to apologize to Aaron, explaining that she does want to marry him, but, you know, their adult lives have barely begun.
After a bit of thinking, Zoey decides that she’d like to go through with it, if Aaron will take her back. Which, of course he will. He’s only been pining after her since the pilot.
There’s no time for any wedding planning either, because the happy couple hijack the party and decide to exchange nuptials right then and there.
The finale also welcomes back some of the original cast, including Emily Arlook, Jordan Buhat, and Francia Raisa.
During a conversation about how it’s been more difficult for these friends to stay in touch than they thought post-college, Ana and Vivek reveal they’ve been trying for a baby but recently experienced a miscarriage. They vow to make more of an effort to keep tabs on each other’s lives and seek support when needed.
In addition to wrapping up six seasons of grown-ish , the episode also closes the chapter on the entire black-ish universe — at least for now.

'Grown-ish' Series Finale, Explained: Did Zoey And Aaron End Up Together?
May 23, 2024
Freeform’s black-ish spinoff, grown-ish came to a close after a six-season long run on Wednesday, and it finally answered the penultimate episode’s cliffhanger ending. In case you missed it, last week’s lead up to the finale left protagonist Zoey ( Yara Shahidi ) running away after a romantic proposal from her long time beau Aaron ( Trevor Jackson ). She turns to friends Nomi (Emily Arlook), Ana (Francia Raisa), Vivek (Jordan Buhat) and others to figure out what to do, and her decision may suprise fans.
According to TV Insider , the finale also saw Johnson’s other love interest, Luka (Luka Sabbat) to rekindle their relationship, somewhat halfheartedly. He opted to tell her his feelings via FaceTime, but Zoey shut it down, describing them as “long distance pals.” All the while, Zoey is avoiding Aaron.
Until Zoey’s younger brother Junior’s graduation boat party, where the will-they-won’t-they couple are forced to figure out where they stand. Zoey tells Aaron that she’s been woking on being “less selfish and a “more balanced person.” She also confessed that she “freaked out” when he popped the question, and apologized for her initial response.
“All I know is, the only version of me that’s any good at all is the one that’s trying to figure life out with you. Aaron, I don’t want a life without you,” Zoey said, to which Aaron responded, “I don’t have one without you.”
Zoey then asked Aaron if marriage was still on the table. He promptly went down on one knee and proposed again, this time using Junior’s class ring. Zoey joined him on bended knee and said, “Only if you marry me, Aaron Jackson.”
Thankfully, fans didn’t wait to imagine what a Zoey/Aaron wedding would look like, as they got right to it. They tied the knot right there at Junior’s graduation party in front of most of the grown-ish fam. The episode ended with the happy couple and their loved ones dancing the night away, and celebrating how far they’ve all come.
