E il pensiero corre subito all’immobiliarista Antonio Pulcini che ha commissionato la barca e il cui nome è finito nella maxi inchiesta conosciuta come ‘Mafia Capitale’. I lavori erano inziati in economia nel 2005 e sono stati terminati solo qualche settimana fa. Nel frattempo lo yacht era stato ceduto da Pulcini a un fondo di investimenti straniero che lo avrebbe impiegato per charter di lusso. Si è trattato dell’ultima importante commessa dei Cantieri Navali che nel 2003 hanno dichiarato fallimento. Negli ultimi giorni l’imbarcazione, che ha attirato sulla banchina tanti curiosi e a questo punto anche l’attenzione degli inquirenti, era stata spostata su una piattaforma galleggiante in vista dell’imminente varo. Ora è tutto fermo e forse solo dopo che i giudici del Riesame confermeranno o meno il sequestro si saprà qualcosa di più del mistero che ruota intorno allo yacht.

Cannes yacht encounter triggered alleged $1.8 billion fraud that put Malaysia’s ex-prime minister in prison

It began with a meeting on a  yacht  off the coast of Cannes in the summer of 2009. The newly-elected prime minister of Malaysia was aboard at the invitation of businessman Jho Low and Saudi-Swiss businessman Tarek Obaid. The men had gathered   to explore deals for Malaysia’s new economic development fund, 1MDB. 

Fifteen years later, the prime minister is in a Malaysian prison serving  time  for corruption. Low, the alleged mastermind behind the  $4.5 billion  defrauding of 1MDB, remains at large. And Obaid and his business partner Patrick Mahony will stand trial at Switzerland’s top criminal court on April 2, accused of creating a sham oil exploration company through which they stole more than $1.8 billion in 1MDB funds.  

Neither Mahony or Obaid have spoken in public about their deals with Jho Low, a round-faced businessman they nicknamed ‘Chunk.’ The month-long trial, set in Switzerland because the two men based their business there, may reveal fresh details about the fugitive, who is suspected of pulling off arguably the biggest financial heist of the 21st century. Mahony   has denied the charges and pleaded not guilty. A lawyer for Obaid didn’t return multiple messages seeking comment on the charges.

It’s also a chance for Switzerland, seen as a soft touch on white-collar criminals, to demonstrate it can be tough on financial crime. A former Coutts & Co. banker found guilty in 2020 of failing to flag money-laundering concerns related to a $700 million transfer made by Low was fined just 50,000 Swiss francs ($55,700). 

Prosecutors claim that the pair worked with Low on the scheme from as early as 2009, and the amounts at stake make it one of the largest frauds that Low allegedly helped orchestrate.

Mahony has been charged with criminal mismanagement, fraud, bribery and aggravated money-laundering, according to the 213-page indictment, with Obaid accused of all that and forgery. A conviction just on fraud charges carries a prison sentence of as much as 10 years, though in many Swiss cases, the sentence is suspended.  

In the indictment, Swiss prosecutors lay out the pair’s alleged scheme — which, they say, included negotiating on behalf of a Saudi king they had no mandate from, while claiming the rights to a Caspian Sea oilfield that they never controlled — from that first Mediterranean meeting in 2009. 

A lawyer for Obaid didn’t return emails seeking comment on the charges against her client. Laurent Baeriswyl, a lawyer for Mahony, said by email that the indictment is the result of a “totally biased and incomplete investigation.”

The Swiss Attorney General’s Office “ignored all the facts which did not correspond to its thesis, contrary to what the law requires” and so “our client therefore strongly contests the facts as they emerge from the indictment and he will defend his rights before the Federal Criminal Court.”

Saudi Connections?

Obaid founded oil exploration company Petrosaudi in 2005 with his acquaintance Prince Turki Bin Abdullah al Saud, determined to capitalize on the connections that royal name could enable. 

But even with that woven into the company’s pitch, the ambitious 30-year-old still needed cash. He had secured a modest loan through Patrick Mahony, a former classmate from private school in Geneva, who would become Petrosaudi’s unofficial chief investment officer in 2009, according to the indictment. But he needed more, prosecutors say, and turned to Low.

Communicating only through encrypted BlackBerry messages and private email accounts, the three men got to work on the company. But according to the indictment, their strategy had little to do with oil exploration. 

Prosecutors highlighted emails among the three men to drive home their argument that Petrosaudi didn’t control the assets it purported to have, nor did it have the Saudi monarch’s blessing. According to one sent in mid-September 2009 before an introductory call with a 1MDB executive, it was imperative to “hint that PSI is indirectly owned by King Abdullah.”

Turki, the seventh son of the late King Abdullah, isn’t accused of any wrongdoing in connection with Petrosaudi, and didn’t exercise any operational role within the company, according to prosecutors. Turki was one of several princes detained in November 2017 by Saudi Arabia’s defacto ruler Mohammed bin Salman, and his current whereabouts are unclear. 

Turkmeni Oil

Following the Cannes   meeting, Obaid proposed that 1MDB and Petrosaudi create a joint venture to exploit Petrosaudi’s stake in a Turkmeni oilfield. Obaid laid out in writing, according to prosecutors, that Petrosaudi would bring “$2 billion worth of its assets in the energy sector into the joint-venture company.” 

There was one problem: Petrosaudi didn’t own the oilfield or the rights to it, but was rather in stalled negotiations with a firm that had paid $10 million to buy up the rights. But those paper rights were essentially worthless as the oilfield lay in waters whose ownership was disputed by Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. 

So Obaid turned to an oil consultant and old family friend to value the oilfield. Nine days later, he produced a report that put the “fair net present value” of the assets at between $2.98 billion and $4.06 billion.

With that hefty valuation in writing and the Saudi royal family’s backing established in the minds of 1MDB executives, the board of directors signed off on Sept. 26, 2009, and two days later authorized the transfer of $1 billion to bank accounts held by the new joint venture, 1MDB PetroSaudi. 

Three hundred million of that went to an account controlled by Obaid, according to prosecutors. The remaining $700 million went to GoodStar, which was falsely presented as a unit of PetroSaudi but was in fact a Seychelles-based entity controlled by Low. On Oct. 5, the businessman wired $85 million of that to an account held in Obaid’s name. Obaid, in turn, wired $33 million to Mahony on Oct. 21. 

The following year, prosecutors allege that the pair set about extracting additional money from 1MDB. Obaid had persuaded the fund to turn the joint venture into a loan facility and he drew down $500 million, ostensibly to invest in French oil company GDF Suez.

Newly flush, the pair appeared keen to distribute the funds quickly, emails show.  

“Right now we are in a good situation because we have this money in a clean and proper legal way so there is nothing anybody can do to us,” Mahony wrote to Obaid in September 2010. 

The next day, he transferred $300 million into Obaid’s personal account and the remaining $200 million to Petrosaudi accounts he controlled, according to prosecutors. 

Then in 2011, Obaid drew down again, this time for $330 million, prosecutors allege. To pressure the Malaysians to accept, he reminded them of how King Abdullah helped evacuate Malaysian Muslims during the Arab Spring protests, and how he had increased the quota of Malaysian Muslims able to make the pilgrimage to Mecca. 

Between 2009 and the end of 2011, prosecutors say that the men took a total of $1.83 billion from 1MDB, with Obaid personally pocketing $580 million, and Mahony, $37 million. 

Bangkok Prison

Obaid and Mahony’s 2023 indictment was based in part on the testimony of Xavier Justo, the third employee at Petrosaudi. After just a year at the company, Justo left and was arrested in Thailand in June 2015. Convicted of attempted blackmail in what he says was a conspiracy on the part of Obaid, Mahony and the Malaysian authorities to silence him, the Swiss national spent 18 months in prison before his country’s government intervened to help get him released. 

Documents Justo shared with  The Sarawak Report,  a blog focused on corruption in Malaysia, led to the first  expose  of the Petrosaudi pair in 2015. He published a  book  last year, co-written with his wife, chronicling his experience with the two men. 

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission flagged its own arrest warrants for Obaid and Mahony to Interpol in early 2020. It’s unclear if they were ever detained and Swiss prosecutors declined to say whether they ordered their arrest. 

Years on, Justo says he hopes that his country’s justice system will now do the right thing.  

“This is the perfect opportunity for Switzerland to show the world that it is serious about fighting financial crime and that it is prepared to punish those who perpetrate it,” he said.

The foiling AC75s won’t be the only boats catching the eye of America’s Cup fans and viewers around the world this summer. De Antonio Yachts, one of the world’s iconic day boat manufacturers based out of Barcelona, unveiled its stunning D37 Alinghi Red Bull Racing Limited Edition this weekend at the Düsseldorf Boat Show designed in collaboration with the Swiss Challengers for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. Youth & Women’s America’s Cup sailors Anja von Allmen and Joshua Richner represented Alinghi Red Bull Racing at the boat unveiling to celebrate the partnership.

The limited edition model will feature design elements and hardware details that speak to the look, feel, and values of Alinghi Red Bull Racing as a team and will have a production run of only 37 units.

As part of the D37’s unveiling, the boat has been named an official spectator boat of Alinghi Red Bull Racing for the America’s Cup campaign. The team will have two D37s, alongside two electric D28 boats.

The D37 Alinghi Red Bull Racing is a model based on the award-winning D36 introduced in 2022. The new limited edition is equipped with two Mercury 400hp Racing engines. The design touches include special upholstery finishes with bucket seats and steering wheel in navy blue leather and red stitching. Colli di Catone

Lazio is a wine region known predominantly for Frascati though it is also home to a few, small, legendary producers such as Fiorano and, also, Colli di Catone.  Colli di Catone makes Frascati but they are best known for their Colle Gaio bottling – made from the ancient variety Malvasia Puntinata, also known as Malvasia del Lazio, which he planted roughly thirty years ago on his best vineyard of the same name.

Winemaker Antonio Pulcini normally exclusively sells his wines locally though recently the Rare Wine Company has convinced him to part with a small yearly allocation. Pulcini works out of a 2000 year old Roman villa with vineyards planted on the local volcanic tufa part of what gives his wines their energy and character.  Malvasia del Lazio is a naturally low-yielding variety though Pulcini goes even further reducing yields to an impressive 20 hl per hectare. The wine spends a few days on the skins before pressing and Antonio allows the fermentation to proceed slowly, sometimes reaching four months in length.  The wine then ages for three to four years in steel before bottling.  At that point the bottles are often aged in the cellar covered in sand, for many years, sometimes decades!

This is a very special Italian white of cult status that we are proud to welcome into our portfolio!

Pulcini makes an array of wine s, but the best introduction to his style is his rendition of Frascati Superiore. He incorporates 40% Malvasia del Lazio into the conventional blend of Malvasia Candia and Trebbiano, and even these latter two varieties gain added character through his fastidious viticulture and famously low yields – less than half the legal limit.

Italy’s list of transcendent white wine s is short, compelling and idiosyncratic. It begins with three growers famed for their obsessive commitment to the indigenous grapes of their region, as well as to their individuality in expressing them. These men are Valentini, Gravner, and Miani. But over the past 30 years, a fourth, far more obscure producer, Antonio Pulcini, has quietly been turning out white wine s of mind-bending complexity. The obscurity of Pulcini’s wine s is in part due to his reclusiveness and how he chooses to sell his wine s, exclusively from the cellar door of his estate, Colli di Catone. (He has long eschewed importers and critics.)

Pulcini works in an ancient villa overlooking Rome, whose 2000-year-old, catacomb-like cellar features a 300 A.D. Christian altar. The villa itself once belonged to the sister of Trajan—the Roman Emperor in the century after Christ’s death. More relevantly, the villa is surrounded by vineyards planted on southwest-facing slopes of volcanic tufa soils; sites rich in minerals and prized by the ancient Romans.

The Catone estate has been renowned for its wine s since the heyday of the Roman Empire. Antonio Pulcini embraces the regions native varieties and has particularly championed the ancient Malvasia Puntinata and Grechello. As one peels back the layers, the compelling character of Pulcini’s wine begins to emerge. Pulcini aimed to craft wine s that honored history. He longed to make the kind of structured wine s that could live for decades. Pulcini chose to focus on indigenous white varieties that once made the region famous. And so, over 30 years ago, he tore out most of his modern Trebbiano and Malvasia di Candia, and today focuses on the ancient varieties, Malvasia del Lazio (aka Malvasia Puntinata) and Grechetto (aka Greco Bianco). Malvasia del Lazio was long recognized as the region’s greatest historic variety; cherished for its wine s’ minerality and ageability.

Pulcini makes an array of wine s, but the best introduction to his style is his rendition of Frascati Superiore. He incorporates 40% Malvasia del Lazio into the conventional blend of Malvasia Candia and Trebbiano, and even these latter two varieties gain added character through his fastidious viticulture and famously low yields – less than half the legal limit. In his hands, this DOCG of often frivolous whites offers superb character and minerality.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive,very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Terre Porziane

• The Terre Porziane estate has been renowned for its wines since the heyday of the Roman Empire.
• Proprietor Antonio  Pulcini embraces the Lazio's native varieties and has particularly championed the ancient Malvasia Puntinata  and  Grechello .
• Yields are kept to just a small fraction of the appellation’s limits and the wines are aged for extended time with the skins, on the lees, and in the bottle until  Pulcini  deems them ready.

Italy’s list of transcendent white wines is short, compelling and idiosyncratic.

It begins with three growers famed for their obsessive commitment to the indigenous grapes of their region, as well as to their individuality in expressing them. These men are Valentini, Gravner, and Miani.

But over the past 30 years, a fourth, far more obscure producer, Antonio Pulcini, has quietly been turning out white wines of similarly mind-bending complexity. The obscurity of Pulcini’s wines is in part due to his reclusiveness and how he chooses to sell his wines, exclusively from the cellar door of his estate, Terre Porziane. (He has long eschewed importers and critics.)

Pulcini works in an ancient villa overlooking Rome, whose 2000-year-old, catacomb-like cellar features a 300 A.D. Christian altar. The villa itself once belonged to the sister of Trajan—the Roman Emperor in the century after Christ’s death. And in the 1940s it housed Orson Welles and Tyrone Power, when they were filming on location in Rome. More relevantly, the villa is surrounded by vineyards planted on southwest-facing slopes of volcanic tufa soils; sites rich in minerals and prized by the ancient Romans.

Decoding a Mystery

As one peels back the layers, the compelling character of Pulcini’s wine begins to emerge. Despite a 20th Century spiral into mediocrity, the wines of Rome’s southern hills had once ranked among the finest in Italy. Like Prince Boncompagni Ludovisi at the nearby Tenuta di Fiorano, Pulcini aimed to craft wines that honored that history. He longed to make the kind of structured wines that could live for decades.

Unlike Fiorano, where non-native varieties were introduced, Pulcini chose to focus on indigenous white varieties that once made the region famous. And so, over 30 years ago, he tore out most of his modern Trebbiano and Malvasia di Candia, and today focuses on the ancient varieties, Malvasia del Lazio (a/k/a Malvasia Puntinata) and Grechetto (a/k/a Greco Bianco). Malvasia del Lazio was long recognized as the region’s greatest historic variety; cherished for its wines’ minerality and ageability. Grechetto – unrelated to the Umbrian variety of the same name – was also prized for its minerality and lemony zing.

Pulcini makes an array of wines, but the best introduction to his style is his rendition of Frascati Superiore . He incorporates 40% Malvasia del Lazio into the conventional blend of Malvasia Candia and Trebbiano, and even these latter two varieties gain added character through his fastidious viticulture and famously low yields – less than half the legal limit. In his hands, this DOCG of often frivolous whites offers superb character and minerality.

A second wine is made from the local Grechetto, which Pulcini calls  Grechello to avoid confusion with the Umbrian variety. Grechetto was long prized for its minerality and lemony zing. It was once an important constituent of Frascati and, in Pulcini's hands, this nearly forgotten variety finds a taut, saline voice.

Pulcini’s top site is the Colle Gaio vineyard, which has long been recognized locally as the viticultural Crown Jewel of the Castelli Romani hills. Here, more than 30 years ago, he planted Malvasia del Lazio; believing that this low-yielding native variety would give him the ageworthy wines he was looking for. And, the resulting wine has become his magnum opus, Colle Gaio .

For, while the yields for all his wines are low, those of Colle Gaio average a mere 20hl/ha; achieving the concentration of grand cru White Burgundy. The wine spends three to four days on the skins prior to pressing and the fermentation proceeds slowly; often lasting up to four months. He then leaves the wine on its lees in stainless tanks for three, four or even more years until he feels the wine is ready to be bottled. And, the wine is then left to slumber in bottle, sometimes buried in sand, for years or decades in the estate’s labyrinthian cellars.

Though superbly balanced, and boasting a wondrous acid spine, the most exciting trait of Pulcini’s Colle Gaio is the minerality and otherworldly tertiary aromas that he coaxes from this noble terroir . While one vintage may be Riesling-like in its complexity, another may resemble Chablis in its minerality. Another vintage may exude orange marmalade, while another intrigues with its intense scent of gun smoke.

Though always made by the same methods, the same grapes and the same terroir , these wines are not only a study in vintage subtleties, they demonstrate with remarkable clarity how profoundly white wine can develop with time in bottle. And, they further demonstrate just how relevant the wisdom of ancient wine traditions can resonate in our modern time.
