How to service a winch – video guide

Rachael Sprot

Rachael Sprot

  • November 29, 2020

Servicing winches regularly is critical for safety, to keep things working easily and to prolong your equipment's life. Rachael Sprot of Rubicon 3 explains how to disassemble, clean and rebuild your winch.

A backwinding winch can be extremely dangerous and cause serious injury, so winches should be serviced every year in order to clean the mechanism, check for damage and replace worn parts.

Rachael Sprot

Springs and pawls, the heart of the ratchet system inside, are most likely to jam or fail, so should be replaced on a regular basis. You’re also checking that the gears and teeth are not worn or burred, and that there is no serious corrosion. After that, it’s a simple case of cleaning and regreasing to keep things spinning smoothly.

1. Setting up

Most winches can be taken apart with two tools – a flat-headed screwdriver and a set of allen keys. Protect your decks with a sheet or cardboard, and it’s a good idea to put something over the guardwires to stop any parts dropping over the side. Have a small container to hand for the small parts. You’ll need a cleaning agent, a toothbrush, winch grease, and oil. Finally have a manual to hand in case you get lost, and a smartphone to take photos to retrace your steps if needs be.

wink yacht service

2. Stripping down

Some winches will have a circlip or locking ring, but on this Harken winch, there’s a screw at the bottom of the handle socket, which allows you to remove the cover and undo the screws that hold the drum on. As you lift the drum take care no bearings drop out of the bottom.

You can then remove the bearings, undo the screws around the assembly base and lift it off to reveal the gears. Carefully take the gears off and lay them out in order, the same way up you take them out.

To remove the pawls, slide a small flat-headed screwdriver under the spring to lift it out of its recess, and slide it out.

wink yacht service

3. Cleaning

Grease collects salt and dirt so will need cleaning off. Use a tub of mineral spirit or diesel and scrub with a toothbrush. As you go, check for wear or corrosion.

Dry off, then grease the gears and teeth with winch grease or marine grease. Non-metal bearings don’t need to be greased, but a tiny amount can help.

wink yacht service

4. Reassembly

Replace the pawls and springs into their housings – pinch the spring into the pawl, then slide it down. Just use pawl oil, or light oil, as grease will go sticky and can make the pawl stick.

Make sure the gear rings go back in the right way round. Newer winches have rings that are reversible for longer life. Before replacing the gears, check the pinions are secure and free of corrosion.

Secure the central body, replace the bearings and slide the drum back on.

wink yacht service

5. Final checks

Make sure the rope stripper for the self tailer points into the cockpit, as this is where the rope tail will go as you winch. Dab anti-corrosion compound onto the screws and hand tighten – check with a torque wrench if you have one.

Give it a spin to check the ratchet works and the winch doesn’t backwind.

“Sailboat Mike” Shebester

As my name implies, I am someone that most people associate with sailing even though I have a passion for all types of boating. I learned to sail over 50 years ago and have been active in both cruising and racing. Although I am currently a land dweller, I lived aboard for over 20 years on a variety of boats. The thing that I love about sailing is that it can be either the most relaxing or intense activity that you can participate in depending on whether you are cruising or racing.

I have a Bachelors of Science in Industrial Engineering and a background in the oil industry. I started my yacht selling career representing Beneteau Sailboats in 1992. I joined the Little Yacht Sales Team in May of 2022. I am a Certified Professional Yacht Broker.

For almost 30 years I have been successful in selling boats, but I am not a high-pressure salesman. My customers keep coming back to me for my product knowledge and my listening ability. Once I find out what features you want in a boat and how you are going to use it, I take my experience and product knowledge to steer you to the right boat. Let me help you find the right boat for you.

List Your Boat With Me

As a boat sales professional for Little Yacht Sales, I strive for a satisfying experience when purchasing a new or used yacht or listing your vessel with LYS. You will enjoy my service and support throughout the process. As a current owner of both sail and powerboats, I have always expected a high level of service as a buyer or a seller. Being meticulous and detail oriented with the maintenance and upkeep of the vessels I own, I am concerned with safety, quality, workmanship, and value. I therefore commit all my resources to the process. I will engage you as a buyer or seller to ensure all your needs are met. I will be there during the process to making an informed decision on the purchase of a new or used vessel or when representing you as the Listing Broker for your vessel.

After growing up in Philadelphia and spending many summers on the Atlantic beaches of New Jersey-Barnegat Bay, Long Island, NJ and surrounding waters I moved to Bethesda, Maryland. As a young teenager I spent summers on the Chesapeake Bay at a YMCA Sailing Camp and polished my nautical skills. Summers on “The Bay” served as my foundation for safe and knowledgeable boating and a lifetime of enjoyment on the water.

Since moving to Florida in 1979 I have spent time on the water in the Florida Keys and around Sarasota Bay, Tampa Bay, the Gulf of Mexico, and surrounding waters. I cruised the BVI’s on my first bareboat charters and later skippered two bareboat charters, Croatia (2016) and Greece (2017). I enjoy sailing and powerboating on small to larger vessels. I have certifications with the ASA-American Sailing Association, the RPBA-Recreational Power Boat Association, US Powerboating, and the NSBC-National Safe Powerboating Council. The ASA IPC-International Proficiency Certificate is the credentials needed o be a bareboat skipper around the world. I am instructor qualified to teach ASA certifications and RPBA-Recreational Powerboat Association, US Powerboating, and BoatUS/NSBC instructor certified to teach powerboating certifications. I currently hold a USCG 100 Ton Master Captain license. In 2019 I started Florida Sailing and Powerboating School and Charters. I became a licensed Florida Boat Broker in 2019. LYS welcomes David Jackson to our team of Professional Brokers.

Kent Little commented: David is a well known broker in the Clear Lake Area. Our relationship goes back over 20 years and 15 of those were at Sea Lake Yachts. David has been a lifelong boater and selling yachts since 1983. David’s experience in power and sail is vast and he has cruised offshore extensively on both power and sail boats. I am extremely excited to have David on board the LYS team!

From David Jackson: I began boating and sailing in the early 70’s and have enjoyed it ever since. After graduating from Oklahoma State University, I moved to the Houston area and bought my second sailboat the first weekend I was here. After racing and cruising around Texas for six years, I started a new career in the marine industry. I have been selling both new and used yachts, power and sail, since 1983. I am a member of the Gulf Coast Yacht Brokers Association and have served as Vice President and on the board for three years; a member of Yacht Brokers Association of America, abiding by their standards; currently on the board of directors of the CPYB (Certified Professional Yacht Brokers) and I am also a Florida licensed Yacht Broker. My name is Captain Rick Weiler and I’m a USCG licensed 100 ton master with sailing and towing endorsements (now retired). I’ve worked as a master carpenter, construction manager and in home sales for over 25 years in Northern Michigan. Since moving to Texas in 2006, I’ve pursued my passion in boating and have worked as a yacht broker with LYS since January of 2011.  I’ve been a Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB) since 2014 and have been an involved member of the Yacht Brokers Association of American (YBAA). In our local chapter of YBAA, the Gulf Coast Yacht Brokers Association (GCYBA), I’ve been an active member as well as serving as President for several terms.

I’ve spent 35 years of my life in Northern Michigan in the Traverse City area on the coast of Lake Michigan. I taught myself how to sail when I was 12 years old and have been sailing ever since. I started by sailing dinghies, Wind Surfers (the very first ones) and Hobie Cats and I’ve owned a Hunter 23, a Newport 27, Island Packet 31 and a Hardin Voyager 44 ketch which I lived aboard for 7 years. I’ve sailed all over northern Lake Michigan. I kept my boat in the North Channel of Lake Huron for three years (this is one of the 10 most beautiful areas in the world to cruise!). I’ve been on many deliveries of friends’ boats in the Great Lakes, up and down the East Coast, Chesapeake Bay, Gulf of Mexico and most recently, throughout the Caribbean Islands. I have extensive experience with modern sailing Catamarans, logging nearly 10,000 miles offshore on them. I can share with you my experiences on these very popular vessels.

As a professional Captain, I’ve gotten to work on a 191 ton Tow Boat pushing tanker barges through the Galveston Bay, ICW up to New Orleans and up the Mississippi to Baton Rouge and the Atchafalaya River. I also spent two years working for Coastal Crewboats on a 42’ crew boat running workers and supplies to the wells and production platforms in Galveston Bay.

I have the professional and personal experience to assist you in selling and buying your new yacht, regardless of whether it is a 25’ sailboat or a 100’+ Mega yacht, located here in Galveston Bay or located in a foreign country . I bring the necessary skills and background to get the job done.

Over these years of selling yachts, I’ve sold 100’s of vessels, specializing in both Monohull and Catamaran Sailing Yachts, Motor Yachts and Trawlers. Whether you are interested in Coastal Cruising or Bluewater Adventures, or getting a Trawler to transit the Great Loop or just acquiring a boat for weekend “Get Aways” on the water, Capt. Rick has the experience to assist you in picking the right boat for your needs.

Having such broad experience with and interests in yachting, I really don’t specialize in any one area. Here is a sampling of the types of vessels and brands I’ve been involved with over the years. Sailing is where it all started for me on Monohulls and from there I graduated to Catamarans. Coastal cruising turned into Bluewater cruising. I have extensive knowledge of the popular monohull brands: Catalina, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Hunter, Dufour, Hanse, Tayana, Passport, Shannon, Bristol, Cape Dory, Amel, Endeavor, Pearson, Hans Christian, Hardin, SeaMaster, Hylas, Taswell, and Ta Shing. I also have extensive knowledge of the Catamaran brands:  Lagoon, FP Fountain Pajot, Leopard, Voyage, HH Design, Chris White designs, Gemini and SeaWind, In Power, I’ve worked with all types of vessels including Commercial, Motor Yachts, Sport Fishing, Sedans, Trawlers and Center Consoles. I am very experienced in seamanship and boat handling and have 100’s of hours of professional training. I’ve handled boats up to 70’ and have been involved with even larger vessels.

Over the years, I’ve also developed effective systems to sell your yacht quickly and get the best price for her. Buying or Selling, I get the job done.

I am  Captain Bella Walker, an experienced sailor, and a licensed 100 ton captain spending the majority of my life on the water. From my childhood days sailing the Bahamas on a CT56 sailboat with my family, to embarking on a semi-solo adventure sailing my own 37ft sailboat from Kemah, TX to Sarasota, FL and back. A true test of skill and determination.

Florida and my boat were my home for 2 years, where I honed my craft amid its diverse waters. I’ve also served as a charter yacht captain in both Clear Lake, Texas, and Sarasota, Florida. I enjoy helping people explore the beauty of the lifestyle on the water, whether it’s just weekend boating or full-time cruising.

From calm days to storms faced, the sea has been my teacher, imparting respect, adaptability, and a love for conservation. My goal is to listen to your wants and needs and find the best suited boat that fits your lifestyle and help turn your dreams into reality.

Kent Little is the President and Founder of LYS. Having been in Professional Yacht Sales for over 29 years, Kent knows the product and how to take care of his customers. Kent decided to go out on his own in the fall of 2010 in order to offer his previous and future customers a better boat buying experience. Kent’s wife, Liz Little, having been a life long boater and the daughter of Capt Jerry Webb (see below) is also an integral part of the LYS team and is co-owner of LYS.

I love boats…everything about them. I enjoy being on the water, the feel and the visual.

I have owned a boat of one size or another since I was 18 years old. I purchased my first boat, a used 14ft Sears Gamefisher trihull, with funds from working at a grocery store.  Through the years, I have progressed up in the size of boats but that feeling of boat ownership has never changed. I have many years of practical knowledge gained by owning sailboats and power boats. I have cruised the Texas gulf coast in my 34 Oday sailboat. I currently own a 40’ trawler that I have lived aboard on and off for 9 years. Over the past 9 years, I have had the opportunity to cruise my trawler through the entire gulf coast, Florida Keys, and the Bahamas.

If you are interested in Trawler style boats for cruising the Great Loop, Bahamas, or a comfortable liveaboard, I have a wealth of information to share with you.

If you are looking at sailboats for local coastal cruising or heading to the islands, I also have a wealth of information to share with you.

If a new sailboat is in your future, we represent Catalina and Lagoon, two of the most popular manufacturers in sailing today. With Catalina’s new line of True North power boats, we are excited to now bring new powerboats to the market along with new sailboats.

If you are looking to sell, I would like the opportunity to represent your boat with Little Yacht Sales. Let me put my experience and passion for boats to work for you.

It is my goal to share my love and knowledge for boats, cruising, and the boating lifestyle. I want to help you find the right boat while making the process educational, enjoyable, and stress free.

I’m a retired Accredited Marine Surveyor with over 20 years of experience inspecting all types of sailboats, (monohull, catamaran and trimaran) and power boats ( Express Cruisers, Motor Yachts, Trawlers, Performance racing boats, Sport Fish, and Yachts up to 98 feet). After boating on Lake Texoma in North Texas for many years, I purchased a passage making 46 ft blue water sailboat in Seattle. From there I sailed to Canada then down the west coast of the United States to Mexico, transited the Panama Canal and ended up on the east coast of Florida.

In 2013 I moved to Sarasota, Florida and have enjoyed the southwest coast of Florida for the last nine years. I teamed up with Little Yacht Sales in 2017 to serve the southwest coast of Florida and beyond selling all kinds of boats while representing both buyers and sellers. I look forward to assisting you in selling your boat or in finding your first boat or a replacement boat.  I have experience working directly with boat manufacturers like Catalina Yachts and Nordhavn, broadening my experience and knowledge in the sailboat and trawler markets.

I am confident my 20 plus years of experience as a marine surveyor along with your input will allow me to assist you in finding the right boat for your intended use. My time in the boating industry and knowledge of most all boats, power and sail, will serve you well when it comes time to sell your boat.

I look forward to the opportunity to earn your business, but more importantly I look forward to getting to know you and spending time on the water with you to make your boating experience a great one!

Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years.

The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.

The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of  recurring orca rammings  around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis.”

According to the research group GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, with leading theories including it being a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.

Orcas Sink 49-Foot Yacht in Mystifying Trend Around the Strait of Gibraltar

A n unknown number of orcas sunk a sailing yacht in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar on Sunday, according to Spain’s maritime rescue service. While orcas are typically peaceful, this is the latest in a string of attacks that have hit the region in the past four years.

Reuters reports that a 49-foot-long vessel, named the Alboran Cognac, carried two people and encountered the high social apex predators at 9 am local time on Sunday. The passengers reported sudden blows to the hull and rudder before the water started seeping into the ship. A nearby oil tanker rescued the two onboard and transported them to Gibraltar. The yacht was left to sink into the ocean.

Experts believe the orcas involved to be a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the name “Gladis.” This group of juvenile males has sunk several yachts in the Strait of Gibraltar over the last four years, but experts are somewhat baffled as to why. While typically peaceful animals, the Gladis pod has plagued the small strip of water separating Europe and Africa for years.

There have been nearly 700 interactions between orcas and ships in the Strait of Gibraltar region since May 2020, according to Reuters. At the time, it seemed like one of many dystopian things going on in the world during the global pandemic. But the trend continues today, and we still don’t have much more of an explanation as to why this happens.

In 2020, photos of the Gladis pod revealed several injuries on the orcas’ bodies, possibly indicating previous run-ins with fishing boats. In a 2023 interview with NPR, director of the Orca Behavior Institute Monika Wieland Shields said we don’t know the motivation, but this could be a defense behavior based on previous trauma. It’s possible the orcas had negative experiences with a fishing boat, so now they see all large boats as a threat.

“I definitely think orcas are capable of complex emotions like revenge,” she told NPR. “I don’t think we can completely rule it out.”

However, Shields doesn’t completely subscribe to the “revenge” hypothesis. There have been plenty of other times when orcas around the world were targeted by boats, and they’ve never responded in this way before. Further, it doesn’t seem that this behavior is spreading to other orca pods.

Another theory is that ramming boats is just the latest orca fad, according to Renaud de Stephanis, president and coordinator at CIRCE Conservación Information and Research, a cetacean research group based in Spain. He told NPR in 2022 that “this is a game” for the orcas, and when they “ have their own adult life, it will probably stop. ” As orcas grow older, they have to help the pod hunt for food and have less time to play with sailboats.

Director of Bay Cetology, Jared Towers, told NPR that fads like this come and go in the orca society. Towers said some orcas in the Pacific in the 1990s would kill fish and swim around with it on their head. Now we don’t see that anymore. Hopefully, the boat ramming phenomenon will come and go like any other trend.
