Imperial Princess: the new British 40m superyacht

Princess – based in Plymouth, UK – has established a reputation for building solid and top-quality production boats, but has never been a company that likes to shout from the rafters. This relatively low-key approach has served the builder well, developing a devoted following of owners who have progressed through the Princess range as it has grown.

The 40 metre project began at about the same time as the 32 metre, which was launched at the London show in 2011 to wide acclaim. But even so, there are significant differences between the two – not only in length and volume, but also in the systems, build methodology, layout and regulations that have to be met. It was an ambitious project. Key for Princess was that it had an existing Princess owner on board from the outset, and with Peter Levine (serial Princess owner) it found its man.

Princess Motor Yacht Sales sold Imperial Princess to Levine, who had early input into the project, which took over two years. During this period, Princess were able to take his experience as a previous Princess owner and a client of Princess Motor Yacht Sales to integrate some of his ideas into the design of the yacht. Princess Motor Yacht Sales maintained a close relationship with their client from inception to ownership of Imperial Princess .

‘My primary concern,’ Levine says, ‘was that I didn’t want a flybridge on steroids. Princess are extremely good at flybridge boats, but the step change from a fly, even with a raised pilothouse like the 32 metre, to a true trideck is a fundamental change in all areas. My primary concern was to make sure it looked modern yet wouldn’t age, and that it would have all the qualities and characteristics of a boat of this class.’

If the challenge was steep, it was met head on by all concerned. Walking over the yacht, it is clear to see that this is no production special, but a true semi-custom yacht fitted out to a high standard, and with several elements that are more usually found on 45 or 50 metre yachts. The main deck saloon and dining area is spacious and bright thanks not only to large windows, but also to twin opening balconies to port and starboard.

The guest cabins too offer space and luxury in equal measure. Aft is a full beam VIP cabin, although this can also be specified as two doubles; forward the guest cabin has been changed into a gym on hull number three. The bathrooms follow the master’s en suites, with a high degree of finish – including a lot of stone – and heated floors.

The original planning concepts for her interior were drawn by Bannenberg & Rowell , then adapted and progressed by the extensive design team at Princess, but it is also obvious walking though the yacht that the owner and his advisors – marine engineer and surveyor Keith Willis, and interiors specialist Chantal Gaudreau – have also contributed.

That quality is evident throughout. Doors are super heavy, and a lot of work has gone into making sure that all guest areas are triple insulated against sound and vibration. Of course, this often means a large weight penalty, but in the case of the 40M this is mitigated by her construction method. She is fully vacuum infused – the largest hull currently built using this method.

The deck spaces and technical areas continue the trend of quality installation and well thought-through planning. The main deck galley is large, with an enviable view through hull windows, and was designed with the help of a top French chef. Power comes from twin MTUs giving a top speed of about 23 knots, although Imperial Princess is likely to cruise at 12 to 14 knots, which gives a fuel consumption of 250 to 300 litres per hour and a range of 1,500 miles.

The aft garage houses a jet ski – with a lifting rack mechanism so that an additional unit can be added – and a custom designed 6.5 metre Rib-X RIB for watersports. The crew/rescue tender is housed in a giant foredeck locker along with other toys, just in front of a seating and sunbathing area that itself nestles in front of a Portuguese bridge. The aft garage space also doubles as a beach club, with privacy screen, and this whole area has the potential to be utilised for a truly prodigious guest relaxation area right on the water.

If Imperial Princess is a measure of what Princess is capable of building, there will no doubt be many more like Levine, enjoying this little ship for exactly what she is – the chance to enjoy cruising in a yacht built to a standard that would put many more expensive yards to shame.

Imperial Princess Beatrice is a stunning 40m motor yacht built in 2012 by the world-renowned UK-based shipyard Princess. This 40m Princess motor yacht boasts a magnificent array of outdoor spaces across its three-tiered design. There is a gorgeous alfresco dining area and plush sofas at the stern of the main deck. This is the perfect area to relax before descending down the stairs to the water platform. From here guests can dive into the turquoise waters for a refreshing swim. Or they can make use of the impressive artillery of water sports equipment on board. Moving to the bow of the middle deck and guests have the opportunity to lounge on the spacious sun pads and bask in the Med sunshine. This is the ideal location to watch the crimson sun set over the French coastline. Add a glass of wine or beverage of your liking freshly prepared by a member of crew into the mix and you will certainly be in heaven.

At the stern of the middle deck there is an outdoor dining table. This is perfect for guests and family to gather around as the sun rises over a delicious breakfast. Moving to the fly bridge and you have probably the most impressive outdoor space on board. This deck is fully equipped with sun loungers, sofas, a bar and even a deluxe Jacuzzi. Guests can relax and enjoy a refreshing beverage as they slip into the Jacuzzi and marvel at the passing views from this great viewpoint.

Moving inside this stunning 40m Princess motor yacht, guests are exposed to the remarkable interior design work of Bannenberg and Rowell. The main salon is a gorgeous open space, with an open plan floor layout. The contrast of light creamy furnishings and dark wooden floors gives the space a delightful contemporary yet cosy atmosphere. The main saloon has sliding doors that open out onto a terrace. Resulting in a bright and airy feeling in the room. Backing onto the saloon is the main dining area. Here guests can gather and enjoy fine dining with delicious meals meticulously prepared by the chef on board. On the middle deck there is another more secluded saloon, This is also furnished with plush sofas, a flat screen TV and stunning seascape views.

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (May 9, 2024) – Princess Cruises is going big in Europe for 2026. The “Love Boat” line today announced that its 2026 European cruise and cruisetour season will be its biggest ever, with five Princess cruise ships sailing the region, including the sensational new Sun Princess. Set to sail on a record-breaking 222 cruises, guests will have unparalleled opportunities to explore the beauty and diversity of Europe.

Running March through November 2026, the European season features 59 unique itineraries, visiting 101 destinations across 29 countries, ranging from five to 42 nights. Highlights of the upcoming season include an opportunity to experience the 2026 total solar eclipse; sail on the newest Princess ship – Sun Princess; the return of roundtrip cruises from Copenhagen and new itineraries from Rome. The robust season goes on sale May 23, 2024.

“There’s incredible demand for European vacations and we don’t see that slowing down anytime soon,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises. “Guests should book early as our best pricing will be when these cruises first go on sale. Our 2026 season delivers the best of Europe with incredible voyages visiting a mix of marquee ports, as well as smaller, off-the-beaten-path spots offering guests their very own personalized journey.”

2026 Europe Highlights

Sun Princess , the next-level Love Boat from Princess, will sail 7-, 14- and 21-night Mediterranean voyages departing from Civitavecchia (Rome), Piraeus (Athens), and Barcelona. Guests on a 14- and 21-night voyage can enjoy an itinerary without calling to the same port twice for a Grand Mediterranean Adventure .

• Itinerary Sample: A seven-night Mediterranean voyage sails roundtrip from Piraeus (Athens) to Barcelona, calling at Santorini, Kotor, Corfu, and Messina (Sicily).

The newest Princess ship is a true engineering marvel, offering an extraordinary cruise experience with not-to-be-missed culinary, entertainment and luxury accommodations. Sun Princess debuts new eye-catching experience venues including The Dome, a groundbreaking geodesic, glass-enclosed structure at the top of the ship inspired by the terraces of Santorini. The outward and suspended Sphere Atrium, the namesake of this new class of ship, takes the central Piazza hub of the ship into a new dimension. With 30 inviting restaurant and bar venues with an unprecedented collection of celebrity collaborators, high-end ingredients and culinary experiences, Sun Princess has something for every guest to love.

The 3,660-guest Sky Princess will return for its sixth year to home port in Southampton. Sky Princess takes guests on itineraries ranging from seven to 28 nights to destinations including Northern Europe, the Canary Islands, and the Mediterranean.

On August 12, 2026, Sky Princess will sail directly into the “path of totality” on a special 14-night Total Solar Eclipse Cruise which also visits France, Spain and Portugal. The cruise departs Southampton August 8, 2026.

NEW for 2026 is a 28-night Northern Europe and Mediterranean itinerary sailing roundtrip Southampton and calling to Skagen, Copenhagen, Warnemunde (for Berlin), Stockholm (overnight), Helsinki, Tallinn, Visby, Zeebrugge (for Brussels/Bruges), Southampton, Vigo, Cadiz (for Seville), Malaga, Cartagena, Gibraltar, Lisbon, Bilbao, Le Verdon (for Bordeaux). Departs September 12, 2026.
