Point Yacht Club, South Africa

The Point Yacht Club, based in Durban, was established in 1892. We are a multifaceted Water Sports Club that offers its members a variety of services suited to the water sports enthusiast.

Our water sport disciplines consist of Keeler Sailing, Dinghy Sailing, Youth Sailing, Power Boating / Angling & Paddling. For more information about our sporting disciplines, please click on “Water Sports”.

As a member you will enjoy the benefit of two club venues: a Bay site clubhouse, located at the Yacht Mole off Margaret Mngadi Ave and a Beach clubhouse, located at Vetch’s beach in the Durban Point Precinct. For an update on the Beach clubhouse, please click on Facilities.

Point Yacht Club- Sailing at Sunset 2021

I was invited by WeCloud to attend a Sailing at Sunset  event! It was an epic event held at  Durban Beach Club and then moved to the  Point Yacht Club !

The aim of the event was to promote membership in both clubs. When you join Durban Beach Club you can also have access to Point Yacht Club with a small price difference. Just contact them and they will explain how it all works. You get access to the beach lounge, undercover parking, lockers, shower facilities and members’ pricing on drinks and meals! Yes, this is separate from DUC which is on the other side!

Beautiful setting right on the beach. We were met by the WeCloud team as well as other guests and influencers! I met the manager Gareth who made us these delicious cocktails.  The Beach Club Sunrise ….. A Champagne and orange juice-based cocktail with peach schnapps and strawberry syrup!

Here we ordered a couple more drinks to take on the boats with us! This venue is just as gorgeous, overlooking the rows of sailboats on the harbour!

Both Point Yacht Club and Durban Beach Club are available for booking and are currently training up staff for the catering. At the current moment, they bring in outside caterers. A special thank you to Gareth and Jamo for incredible hospitality, chatting with me and making all this info available.

Wednesday night sail race

We were all divided into teams, and I was paired with Sean, an introverted, quiet, sweet technician from WeTech. Poor guy! He had me for company, talking the entire time, of course!!! There were already guests when we hopped onboard. They have such good team spirit and camaraderie. They told me how they get together every Wednesday night here at the club for these sailing races!

It truly was a wonder to see these guys at work! I would hear Greg the Skipper shout ‘Tack’ and everyone just knew what to do. Sheets were being pulled. Hunky guys were jumping around me from one side of the boat to the other…Doesn’t that sound like something out of 50 Shades of Grey!? Or was that only in my mind, haha.

Before you think I have completely lost the plot, I learnt some sailing terminology and that  Sheets  are ropes attached to the lower corners of a sail!

 ( I really must thank Wanda from WeCloud for assigning me this boat.) The mainsail would go up or turn, then the sailboat would turn! All with the sunset and other sailboats in view!!!! It was fantastic!

Overall, such a pleasant experience with beautiful souls. The club members I met were very kind, welcoming and friendly. I get the sense that they know how to make the most out of life this last, challenging year! They have joy and live life to the full, not wanting to waste the days we are given.

The Staff at the Marina will happily phone the launderette to collect your washing, or one of the taxi companies (or the shuttle bus to King Shaka Airport) to book your ride; and help you in any way we can to make your stay in our city fabulous.

Local Attractions

The Durban Marina is home to the  Royal Natal Yacht Club and  Point Yacht Club, both of which offer meals, ablutions, and an opportunity to mingle with the local Durbanites. Also overlooking the Marina is the popular 9th Avenue Waterfont Restaurant. The nearby  Wilsons Wharf next door offers entertainment and a selection of pubs and restaurants as well.  

Situated close to the old Golden Mile, where you can still catch a ride in a Zulu Rickshaw, the Victoria Embankment (aka the Esplanade) is home to the Roma Revolving Restaurant which boasts wonderful views of Greater Durban. 

uShaka Marine World (a large aquarium with a great conservation drive), Suncoast Casino, Moses Mabhida Stadium (a fantastic architectural wonder), Umgeni River Bird Park and the Indian Temples are just a few of the wonderful places right nearby to visit. For those wanting to experience Durban up close, you can explore the city with a number of walking tours depending on your interests.

Durban is not far from major tourist attractions such as game parks and historic sites. If you have time to travel into the hinterland, we are just two or three hours from places like Tala Game Reserve, the Southern Drakensberg or (in the other direction) Zululand. Some of the wonderful spots up the North Coast include St Lucia Wetlands and Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park. Lying just on the outskirts of Durban is the famous Thousand Hills Valley and Phezulu Safari Park, or  if you really have time on your hands you might like to leave your boat with us and visit the Kruger National Park!

For those who like browsing, the Markets of Warwick are a large informal street market and the Indian Market in Victoria Street offers a wide range of bargains. Shopping Centres (such as Musgrave, the Pavilion, Gateway) are just a taxi-ride away.

Probably one of the safest places in Durban. Cool calm and super relaxed atmosphere. Pools breaks fishing canooeing or just enjoying sundowners

Very big premises. A few different rooms available for hire for functions & conferences. Right on the harbour which is lovely but the smell from the dirty water is sometimes a bit off-putting. Bar and hot food available on site. A short walk will take you to a small shopping area where there are a few novelty shops and a perfumer, nice to stroll through. Easy access off Margaret Mncadi Ave and on site paid parking available. Do not try take a chance on the paid parking, SAPS on site as well as Metro.

The Quarter Deck

Is a medium sized venue, giving you panoramic views of the Durban, the Yacht Marina and the Harbour. Located on the first floor, this room is fully air conditioned, with access to the balcony and outside seating. The room has its own bar.

numbers as follows:

This Large fully air conditioned, pleasant and comfortable, venue also offers you views over

the Marina from the first Floor. The Room boast a full serving station, access to the balcony

and outside seating, as well as bar service.
