How Jordan Belfort's 37m superyacht Nadine sank off the coast of Sardinia

Related articles.

Coco Chanel was famously outspoken on many things, but yachting, in particular, attracted her ire. “As soon as you set foot on a yacht you belong to some man, not to yourself, and you die of boredom,” she was once quoted as saying.

Her solution was to buy her own yacht. A 37m with a steel hull, built by the Dutch yard Witsen & Vis of Alkmaar. The yacht passed through many hands, finally ending up belonging to the Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort, on whose watch she foundered and sank in 1996.

The yacht was originally built for a Frenchman under the name Mathilde , but he backed out and she caught Chanel’s eye instead. With a narrow beam, a high bow and the long, low superstructure typical of Dutch yachts of her era, she was certainly a beautiful boat. But she was also well equipped, with five staterooms in dark teak panelling, magnificent dining facilities, room for big tenders and, later, a helipad. A frequent sight along the Florida coast, she caught the eye of a young skipper called Mark Elliott.

“In those days, she was the biggest yacht on the East Coast,” he remembers. “Nobody had ever seen anything like it. I needed a wrench once and went up to the boat - Captain Norm Dahl was really friendly.” He didn’t know it then, but Elliott was destined to become the skipper of the boat himself and was at the helm when the storm of the century took her to the bottom off Sardinia.

Coco Chanel died in 1971 and sometime thereafter the yacht was renamed Jan Pamela under the new ownership of Melvin Lane Powers. He was a flamboyant Houston real estate developer, fond of crocodile skin cowboy boots and acquitted of murder in a trial that gripped the nation.

Powers sent Jan Pamela to Merrill Stevens yard in Miami, where a mammoth seven-metre section was added amidships. “We made templates for the boat where we were going to cut her in half, then she went out for another charter season,” remembers Whit Kirtland, son of the yard owner. “When the boat came back in, we cut it just forward of the engine room, rolled the two sections apart and welded it in.”

He remembers how the sun’s heat made the bare and painted metal expand at different rates. “You had to weld during certain time periods – early in the morning or late at night,” says Kirtland.

The result of the extension was a huge new seven-metre full-beam master stateroom, an extra salon and one further cabin – pushing the charter capacity to seven staterooms. During this refit, the boat’s colour was also changed from white to taupe. “No one had really done it before and it was gorgeous,” says Elliott. By 1983, Powers was bankrupt and the yacht was sold on again. She next shows up named Edgewater .

Elliott’s chance came in 1989. He was working for the established yacht owner Bernie Little, who ran a hugely profitable distribution business for Bud brewer Anheuser-Busch. “Bernie Little had always wanted to own the boat,” Elliott says. “He loved it. He bought it sight unseen – and I started a huge restoration programme, including another extension to put three metres in the cockpit.”

It was a massive task, undertaken at Miami Ship. “We pulled out all the windows, re-chromed everything, repainted – brought it back to life,” says Elliott. They also cut out old twin diesels from GM and replaced them with bigger CAT engines, doubling her horsepower to 800. “Repowered, she could cruise at up to 20 knots. She was long and skinny, like a destroyer.”

A smart hydraulic feature was also brought to life for the first time. Under two of the sofas in the main stateroom were hidden 3.6m x 1.2m glass panels giving a view of the sea under the boat. At the push of a button, the sofas lifted up and mirrors above allowed you to gaze at the seabed – from the actual bed.

Now called Big Eagle , like all of Little’s boats, she was a charter hit and her top client was a certain New York financier named Jordan Belfort. He fell in love with her and begged Little to sell to him. But he needed to secure financing, and in 1995, Little agreed to hold a note on the boat for a year if Mark Elliott stayed on as skipper.

With the boat rechristened Nadine after his wife, Belfort set about another round of refit work, restyling the interior with vintage deco and lots of mirrors, extending the upper deck this time, and fitting a crane capable of raising and stowing the Turbine Seawind seaplane.

Nadine also carried a helicopter, a 10m Intrepid tender, two 6m dinghies on the bow, four motorbikes, six jetskis, state-of-the-art dive gear. “You pretty much needed an air traffic controller when all these things were in the water,” says Elliott.

Belfort’s partying was legendary and Elliott clearly saw eye-watering things on board, but as far as he was concerned, he was there to safeguard the boat. “When Jordan Belfort became the owner, he could do whatever he wanted. I was there to protect the note,” says Elliott. “He is a brilliant mind and a lovely person. It was just when he was in his party mode, he was out of control.”

Nadine and her huge cohort of toys and vehicles plied all the usual yachting haunts on both sides of the Atlantic. But Belfort’s love story was to be short-lived. Disaster struck with the boss and guests on board during an 85-mile crossing between Civitavecchia in Italy and Calle de Volpe on Sardinia.

What was forecast to be a 20-knot blow and moderate seas degenerated into a violent 70-knot storm with crests towering above 10.6m, according to Elliott. Wave after wave pounded the superstructure, stoving in hatches and windows so that water poured below and made the boat sluggish. By a miracle the engine room remained dry and they could maintain steerage way, motoring slowly through the black of the night as rescue attempt after rescue attempt was called off.

Nadine eventually sank at dawn in over 1000m of water just 20 miles from the coast of Sardinia. Everyone had been taken off by helicopter, and there was no loss of life. Captain Mark Elliott was roundly congratulated for his handling of the incident. “The insurance paid immediately because it was the storm of the century,” he says. “I took the whole crew but one with me to [Little’s next boat] Star Ship . That was my way to come back.”

Martin Scorsese ‘Kept Fighting’ for ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ Yacht Scene to Be in Final Cut

Martin Scorsese was determined that “ The Wolf of Wall Street ” would have a sinking ship onscreen.

The blockbuster, Oscar-nominated 2013 film which starred Leonardo DiCaprio as real-life disgraced stockbroker Jordan Belfort, was originally a whopping four hours long. While the film was eventually trimmed down to 180 minutes, screenwriter Terence Winter revealed that Scorsese refused to cut an expensive yacht sequence.

“Because [the script] was so long, you know, the fear was there were going be things that we were gonna have to cut — like the sequence where the boat sinks and they get rescued at sea,” Winter told The Hollywood Reporter . “It was on the chopping block for the longest time because it was so wild and so expensive. To his credit, Marty just kept fighting and said, ‘We have to have that. I have to have that.'”

The scene involves Belfort (DiCaprio) and his wife Naomi ( Margot Robbie ) having to be rescued by helicopter when sailing from Italy to Monaco in a desperate attempt to stop federal investigators from accessing bank accounts.

“There was actually a four-hour cut of that movie initially and it was just a lot more insanity — if you can believe there was room for any,” Emmy winner Winter continued. “But I was absolutely thrilled that everything got in there. Every possible thing… including the kitchen sink… is in that movie. I could not have been more happy with it.”

Acclaimed editor and longtime Scorsese collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker previously told IndieWire that the four-hour cut is beloved by those who had seen it, and Scorsese even considered releasing it in two parts. “Well, we thought about it,” Schoonmaker said. “But the film doesn’t work split in half. It has to have a certain arc.”

Actress Robbie recently revealed that the overnight success of “The Wolf of Wall Street” was overwhelming at times, saying, “Something was happening in those early stages and it was all pretty awful. I remember saying to my mom, ‘I don’t think I want to do this.’ And she just looked at me, completely straight-faced, and was like, ‘Darling, I think it’s too late not to.’ That’s when I realized the only way was forward.”

How Accurate Is The Wolf of Wall Street ?

For  The Wolf of Wall Street , his latest collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese forewent his signature voiceover style in favor of more direct address: Throughout the movie, DiCaprio, playing the lupine financial huckster Jordan Belfort, looks into the camera and speaks right to the audience. Terence Winter, who wrote the screenplay, explains the use of the technique thusly: “ You are being sold the Jordan Belfort story by Jordan Belfort , and he is a very unreliable narrator.”

It’s important to keep that in mind if you decide to dig into the fact and fiction of the film.  The Wolf of Wall Street  is quite faithful to the book by Belfort that it’s based on —though there are differences; the key ones are enumerated below. But how faithful is that book to reality?

It can be hard to tell, especially since some of its more outlandish tales turn out to be true. Nonetheless, below is an attempt to suss out the true-to-life from the merely true-to-Belfort in the film version of his story.

Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio)

The broad outlines of Belfort’s story are faithfully rendered by the film: A talented but struggling salesman from Long Island, he got a job at venerable investment firm L.F. Rothschild, then was laid off after Black Monday . He went to work at Investors Center, a penny stock house, and a year later opened “ a franchise of Stratton Securities , a minor league broker-dealer,” in “a friend’s car dealership in Queens.” He and his partner earned enough to buy out Stratton and form Stratton Oakmont, which he built into one of the largest over-the-counter brokerage firms in the country. (As in the movie, he hired some old friends .) He did an enormous amount of drugs—including, yes, Lemmon 714s —employed the services of countless prostitutes, and eventually went to prison for the pump-and-dump schemes that made him rich.

Much of DiCaprio’s dialogue comes straight from Belfort’s book, as do nearly all of the hard-to-believe misadventures: landing the helicopter on his lawn while stoned, crashing his car while severely high on Quaaludes, insisting that the captain of his massive yacht sail through choppy waters only to have the boat capsize and then get rescued by the Italian navy. Some of these stories are difficult to verify, but, for what it’s worth, the FBI agent who investigated Belfort told the New York Times , “I tracked this guy for ten years, and everything he wrote is true .” (Even  the yacht story checks out .) As for the much discussed tossing of little people, shown at the beginning of the movie: Belfort’s second-in-command says “ we never abused [or threw] the midgets in the office ; we were friendly to them.” That same former exec says there were never any animals in the office, let alone a chimpanzee, and he says that no one called Belfort “the Wolf.” We know, at least, that the nickname was not coined by a Forbes writer . But, for the most part, it’s  Belfort’s word  against his.

As far as I can tell, Belfort is not a particular advocate of “ sell me this pen ,” a bit of sales interview role-playing that has been around for years . Another minor but notable difference between movie and reality: Belfort, unlike DiCaprio, is a short man, and multiple acquaintances have suggested that his lust for money, power, and attention are evidence of a Napoleon complex . As for the fidelity of DiCaprio’s portrayal otherwise, there are many videos of Belfort you can watch online, including one or two of Stratton Oakmont company parties .

Danny Porush/Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill)

The case of Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill) is more complicated. For one thing, Azoff is a fictional name, and the character is sometimes described as a composite. His story closely matches that of Danny Porush—but Porush himself has disputed some of the details . Here are the basic facts: Porush lived in Belfort’s building, and he went to work as a trainee under Belfort before Stratton Oakmont. As History vs. Hollywood notes, he did not meet Belfort in a restaurant ; they were introduced by Porush’s wife (and yes,  she was his cousin ; they have since divorced). He has admitted to eating a live goldfish that belonged to a Stratton employee, as depicted in the memoir and the movie, but denies the  three-way with Belfort and a teenaged employee .

Porush was indeed a childhood friend of Steve Madden’s, and the initial public offering for that women’s shoe company was the biggest bit of business Stratton Oakmont ever did. Madden, like Porush and Belfort, served time in prison for participating in the Stratton scheme.

Nadine/Naomi (Margot Robbie)

Photo courtesy Mary Cybulski/Paramount Pictures; Home video still/CNN/YouTube

The names of Belfort’s wives were also changed for the film. Belfort divorced Denise Lombardo, called Teresa in the movie, after meeting Nadine Caridi at a Stratton Oakmont party . Caridi, called Naomi and played by Margot Robbie, was a model who had appeared in beer commercials; in the book, Befort calls her “the Miller Lite girl.” (You can see one of her ads below.) In both the book and the movie Belfort calls her the Duchess of Bay Ridge (or just the Duchess, for short), because she was born in England but grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. She really did have an English aunt (named Patricia, not Emma) who smuggled money into Switzerland on Belfort’s behalf, and who died while Belfort’s money was still in Swiss banks. (Belfort also had a drug-dealing friend with Swiss in-laws who did much of the smuggling—and that friend was later arrested after a botched money hand-off with Porush , just as we see in the movie.)

The scene in which Naomi spreads her legs open and tells Jordan he won’t be getting sex any time soon , only to learn that she is in full view of a security camera, is taken right from the book—as is the fight in which she throws water at her husband repeatedly. Belfort acknowledges hitting his wife in the memoir; he says he kicked her down the stairs. He also threatened to take their daughter away, putting her in the car with him and then crashing it into a pillar on their property. He was high.

Belfort and Caridi have since divorced.

Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey)

Graphic by Slate. Images courtesy courtesy of YouTube, Paramount Pictures.

The L.F. Rothschild trader who takes Jordan to lunch and tells him that cocaine and masturbation are the keys to success as a stockbroker is based on a real person whose name is not changed in the movie or the book. Mark Hanna has told his own version of the story on YouTube , and he does not seem to dispute the substance of Belfort’s account. (The lunch scene in the film combines two conversations from the memoir, using nearly identical dialogue.) Hanna himself was later convicted of stock fraud . He did not pound his chest and hum rhythmically, as McConaughey does so memorably in the movie; that flourish is based on an acting exercise that McConaughey likes to do , and was, according to the movie’s press notes, incorporated into the film after DiCaprio and Scorsese noticed the actor doing it on set.

Special Agent Gregory Coleman/Patrick Denham (Kyle Chandler)

Courtesy WolfofWallStreet.com/Photo courtesy Mary Cybulski/Paramount Pictures

Patrick Denham is another made-up name, but there really was an FBI agent who followed Belfort closely for years: Gregory Coleman. He told CNBC in 2007 that he was struck by the “ blatantness ” of Belfort’s financial crimes. As far as I can tell, they did not meet on Belfort’s yacht, as the movie suggests ; in the book, Belfort first meets Coleman when the FBI arrives to arrest Belfort at his home. (The arrest did not take place while Belfort filmed an infomercial—that’s a bit of poetic license on Scorsese’s part.)

The Aftermath After his arrest and indictment, Belfort cooperated with the FBI. In the film, Jordan, while wearing a wire, passes a note to Donnie telling him not to incriminate himself. Belfort did not pass such a note to Porush, but, in his second book, Catching the Wolf of Wall Street , he claims to have done just this for his friend Dave Beall . He ultimately served 22 months in prison and was ordered to pay over $100 million in restitution to his victims ( which he has apparently failed to do ). As the film depicts, he became a motivational speaker after leaving prison; at the seminar in the movie, DiCaprio as Jordan is introduced by the real Jordan Belfort (and, in real life, the actor has filmed a testimonial for Belfort ). Belfort is not the only real-life participant to show up in the movie: A private investigator that Belfort employed, Richard “Bo” Dietl, is also in the film; he plays himself.

10 Things You May Not Know About 'The Wolf of Wall Street'

Leonardo DiCaprio filming on location for "The Wolf Of Wall Street" on Pine Street on August 25, 2012 in New York City.

Belfort’s inspiration to write the book 'The Wolf of Wall Street' came from an unlikely place

Following his arrest for stock-market manipulation, Belfort pled guilty, and in exchange for his cooperation with an ongoing FBI investigation, was sentenced to 22 months in prison. In 2004, Belfort arrived at Taft Correctional Institution, a low-security federal prison in California, where his cubemate was actor, comedian and marijuana rights activist Tommy Chong, who was serving a nine-month stint for selling drug paraphernalia.

The two men bonded, exchanging stories about their outsized pre-prison lives. Chong, who was writing a book of his own, encouraged Belfort to take a stab at capturing his life story. According to Chong, Belfort’s first tried his hand at fiction, unsuccessfully. As he told MacLean ’s , “You’ve got to write those stories you’ve been telling me at night. Your real life is much more exciting than any kind of imaginary story you could come up with.” Belfort was also inspired by Tom Wolfe’s satirical novel of 1980s excess, The Bonfire of the Vanities , which he discovered in the prison library. Belfort and Chong remained friends after their time in prison.

The trip from page to screen was rocky — and 'The Wolf of Wall Street' was almost a very different film

Following his release, a broke Belfort redoubled his efforts, receiving an advance from Random House for more than $1 million for his manuscript. Hollywood quickly came calling, with stars like Brad Pitt and Mark Wahlberg eyeing the part. Among those most interested was DiCaprio, who brought director Scorsese on board, for what would be their fifth collaboration. But after a deal with Warner Brothers fell through, the film was in limbo, and director Ridley Scott was briefly attached.

In 2010, an independent production company, Red Granite Pictures, bought the film rights, and casting got underway. For the role of Donnie Azoff, Belfort’s co-founder, a number of actors were considered, before Jonah Hill convinced DiCaprio and Scorsese that he should audition for the role — the first time he’d had to audition in years. Actresses Blake Lively , Amber Heard and others were reportedly considered for the role of Belfort’s second wife before Australian newcomer Margot Robbie was cast. Alan Arkin reportedly passed on the role of Max Belfort, Jordan’s father, which went to Rob Reiner. And the role of Robbie’s on-screen aunt, eventually played by former Bond Girl and Absolutely Fabulous actress Joanna Lumley, was originally offered to Julie Andrews , who turned it down due to the after-effects of ankle surgery.

Leonardo DiCaprio filming on location for "The Wolf Of Wall Street" on August 25, 2012, in New York City

One of the most well-known scenes wasn’t in the script

Early on in the film, DiCaprio has lunch with a successful stockbroker named Mark Hanna. While Hanna was a real figure, his unusual behavior during the meeting didn’t happen. Matthew McConaughey ’s rhythmic beating of his chest and humming was actually an acting technique he used before filming to get himself ready for a scene. As he told Graham Norton, “That's something I'll do…to relax myself, get my voice to drop. I've been doing it for a while, but it's just something I do.” DiCaprio noticed it during rehearsals and suggested to Scorsese that they film it, later saying that it helped set the tone for the movie.

The names of the real-life people who inspired the film were changed for the big screen

While Hanna’s real name made it into the film, others didn’t. Belfort’s first wife was named Denise, not Teresa. And his second wife’s name was Nadine, not Naomi (although Belfort did nickname her The Duchess and named his yacht after her). FBI Special Agent Gregory Coleman, who spent more than half a decade investigating Belfort and his company, became Patrick Denham in the film. The real name of Belfort’s friend and Stratton Oakmont co-founder was Danny Porush. Belfort used his name in his book, but after Porush threatened to sue the film’s producers, they changed it to Donnie Azoff.

The real-life “Donnie” disputes some of the film’s depiction of events

Porush admitted that many of the film’s most outlandish events actually occurred, including Belfort sinking his yacht in Italy and nearly crashing his helicopter on his lawn. It’s also true that Porush ate the goldfish of a broker with disappointing results and that the company paid a secretary $10,000 to shave her head. And Porush actually was friends with shoe designer Steve Madden, who, along with Belfort and Porush, wound up going to jail for his role in the securities fraud surrounding the stock offering of his eponymous company.

But he took issue with some of the other moments depicted in both Belfort’s memoir and the film. According to Porush , nobody ever referred to Belfort as the “Wolf” of Wall Street, Belfort instead gave himself the nickname for the book. And Porush denies that employees abused the little people the company hired by throwing them as shown in the film.

Belfort has a cameo in the movie

During the years-long delay in production of the movie, Belfort acted as an advisor for DiCaprio. He estimated that he spent hundreds of hours with the actor, walking him through both the details of his financial schemes and how to portray the physical and mental effects of the drugs Belfort consumed on a regular basis. As DiCaprio told The Wall Street Journal , Belfort was “incredibly open about his life, especially the most embarrassing parts. I interviewed him incessantly and tried to pull out every detail I possibly could. We incorporated a lot of other stories that weren't even in the book into the movie."

Despite his years of work with DiCaprio, Belfort didn’t meet Scorsese until near the end of filming, when Belfort had a small role in the film’s final scene. He’s the man who introduces DiCaprio’s Belfort at a seminar in Australia where Belfort’s a featured motivational speaker.

The characters’ rampant drug use is a key part of the film but showing that descent came at a cost

For the infamous Quaalude scene, where an impaired DiCaprio tries to drive his car, it was the actor who came up with the idea to open the car’s door with his feet. After several attempts at getting the tricky physical shot, DiCaprio injured his neck and had to wear a brace for several days. And all that cocaine? It was crushed vitamin B. The cast snorted so much of it during production that Hill developed bronchitis and wound up being briefly hospitalized .

The film was banned in several countries

Thanks to its depictions of drug use, sex and an almost record-breaking level of profanity, it’s perhaps not surprising that the film rattled overseas censors. In fact, Scorsese had to cut several scenes in the U.S. version to avoid receiving an NC-17 rating. Additional cuts were made before its release in India and Lebanon, while the United Arab Emirates initially cut 45 of the film’s 180 minutes. Singapore officials limited its distribution, and the film was banned entirely in Malaysia and Nepal. Despite this, it was Scorsese’s highest-grossing film to date, netting $392 million worldwide.

Scorsese and DiCaprio received criticism for the film’s portrayal

Critics and audiences were divided in their reactions to the film. Some, including law enforcement officials who had worked on Belfort’s case and those who had been victims of his fraud, were angered by what they considered to be the film’s glorification of both Belfort’s debauched life and the crimes that funded it. Especially since the film opened just a few years after the 2007-2008 financial crisis , caused in large part by unscrupulous Wall Street actions. Others defended the film, saying that it played like a morality tale, with Belfort getting his just deserts and going to jail. DiCaprio defended the film, noting, “I wanted to make an unapologetic film on the subject matter that didn’t give any false sense of empathy for the character, but that instead was an analysis of man gone awry.”

The film has been ensnared in a number of legal cases

Before filming even began, the Department of Justice sought an injunction against Belfort’s publisher and DiCaprio’s production company, only relenting when Belfort agreed to pay 50 percent of his earnings as part of his deal to pay $100 million in restitution to his victims. In 2018, federal prosecutors accused Belfort of reneging on his restitution deal, claiming he still owed more than $90 million — despite pocketing millions as a motivational speaker thanks to the film’s success.

Red Granite, the film’s producers, were implicated in a scheme that saw billions siphoned from a Malaysian development fund — including the money used to finance the film. Producer Riza Aziz was indicted, and the case led to the downfall of the government of his stepfather, Malaysia’s prime minister. In 2020, Belfort filed a lawsuit that accused Red Granite of fraud, alleging that he’d been unaware of the illegal source of the film’s funding, and asking to be released from his contract with the company, which owns the rights to both The Wolf of Wall Street and Belfort’s second book.

The Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street

  • Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort , from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.
  • Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) is Long Island penny stockbroker who serves almost two years in prison for refusing to co-operate in a huge 1990s securities fraud case that involved widespread corruption on Wall Street and in the corporate banking world, including mob infiltration.
  • Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) narrates the film showing his monstrous success with his firm complete with ribaldry at work, a sumptuous home on the Gold Coast of Long Island and a trophy wife who is a former model. He then flashes back to 1987, where he began a low-level job at an established Wall Street firm. His boss Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey) advises him to adopt a lifestyle of casual sex and cocaine to succeed. However, shortly after he passes his exam to become a certified stockbroker, he loses his job on account of the firm's bankruptcy as a result of Black Monday. Now unemployed in an economy that is unaccommodating to stockbrokers and sufficiently discouraged to consider a new line of work, Jordan's wife Teresa (Cristin Milioti) encourages him to take a job with a Long Island boiler room dealing in penny stocks, which are also largely ignored by regulators. Belfort impresses his new boss with his aggressive pitching style, and earns a small fortune for the boiler room and himself as penny stocks have a much higher commission than blue chips. Jordan also befriends Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill), a salesman living in the same apartment complex and they decide to go into business together. To facilitate this, his accountant parents are recruited as well as several of Jordan's friends, some of them experienced marijuana dealers. The basic method of the firm is a pump and dump scam. To cloak this, Belfort gives the firm the respectable WASP like sounding name of Stratton Oakmont. An article in Forbes dubs Jordan the "Wolf of Wall Street", and soon hundreds of ambitious young financiers flock to his company. A decadent lifestyle of lavish parties, sex and drugs follows. Jordan regularly uses prostitutes and becomes addicted to cocaine and Quaaludes. FBI Agent Patrick Denham (Kyle Chandler) begins investigating Stratton Oakmont. When Jordan meets Naomi Lapaglia (Margot Robbie) at one of his parties, he begins an affair with her, resulting in his divorce from Teresa. Jordan makes Naomi his second wife in an extravagant wedding and gives her a yacht aptly named Naomi, and soon they have a daughter, Skylar. Meanwhile, the Securities and Exchange Commission works jointly with the FBI to intensify the Stratton Oakmont investigation. Jordan instantly makes US$22 million on his securing the IPO of Steve Madden Ltd. To hide his money, Jordan opens a Swiss bank account with the corrupt banker Jean-Jacques Saurel (Jean Dujardin) in the name of Naomi's aunt Emma (Joanna Lumley), who is a British citizen and outside the reach of American authorities. He uses friends with European passports to smuggle cash to Switzerland. When Donnie gets into a public fight with Brad Bodnick (Jon Bernthal), who is one of their money couriers, and Brad is arrested, their scheme is nearly exposed. Donnie offers Jordan a powerful brand of Quaaludes, hoping to ease the sting of the bad news. The pills are old and seem to have lost their potency, so they take huge doses to compensate. Jordan then receives a call from Bo Dietl, his private investigator, who insists Jordan call him back from a payphone. Jordan drives to a country club to phone Bo, who warns Jordan of Brad's arrest and that his house phone has been wiretapped. At this point, the Quaaludes finally kick in with overwhelming effect. Severely debilitated, Jordan drives back home to prevent Donnie from using his phone. When Jordan arrives home Donnie (who is also high) is on the phone with Saurel. Jordan fights Donnie to make him get off the phone and tells him he found out what happened between him and Brad. Donnie starts choking on ham and nearly suffocates. Jordan snorts cocaine to counteract the effect of the Quaaludes in order to help save Donnie's life. With the shadow of law enforcement hanging over them, Jordan's father Max (Rob Reiner) attempts to convince his son to step down from Stratton Oakmont and escape the large amount of legal penalties. However, during his leaving party at the office, Jordan changes his mind and to the great acclaim of his employees vows to stay on. Jordan, Donnie and their wives on a yacht trip to Italy learn that Emma has died of a heart attack. Over his grieving wife's objections, Jordan decides to sail to Monaco so they can drive to Switzerland without getting their passports stamped at the border and settle the bank account, but a violent storm capsizes their yacht. After their rescue, the plane sent to take them to Geneva is destroyed by a seagull flying into the engine, exploding and killing three people. Witnessing this, Jordan considers this a sign from God and decides to sober up. Two years later, Denham arrests Jordan during the filming of an infomercial. Saurel, arrested in Florida over an unrelated charge, has told the FBI everything. Since the evidence against him is overwhelming, Jordan agrees to gather evidence on his colleagues in exchange for leniency. Jordan is optimistic about his sentencing but after one last bout of sex, Naomi tells Jordan she will divorce him and wants full custody of their children. Jordan throws a violent tantrum, gets high, and ends up crashing his car in his driveway during an attempt to abscond with their daughter. The next morning, Jordan wears a wire to work. Jordan silently slips Donnie a note warning him about the wire. The note finds its way to Agent Denham, who arrests Jordan for breaching his cooperation deal. The FBI raids and shuts down Stratton Oakmont. Despite this one breach, Jordan receives a much reduced sentence for his testimony and is sentenced to 36 months in a minimum security prison in Nevada. After his release, Jordan makes a living hosting seminars on sales technique.

“I got the lion for one day”: Leonardo DiCaprio’s Film The Wolf of Wall Street’s Epic Lion Scene Was Shot in an Unbelievable Way

L eonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have collaborated 6 times over the years. The director-actor duo have never repeated themselves and have constantly worked on reinventing themselves each time. From historical epics, crime dramas, to psychological thrillers, the two have become the ideal pairing that can do no wrong.

One of their wild collaborations was the 2013 biographical black comedy film The Wolf of Wall Street . One of the craziest scenes from the film was a lion casually walking through the Stratton Oakmont firm in the presence of office workers. While Scorsese did use a real lion and real people for the scene, a brilliant strategy was used to seamlessly blend them together.

VFX Artist Took a Unique Strategy to Shoot The Lion Scene in The Wolf of Wall Street

Leonardo DiCaprio starrer The Wolf of Wall Street was one of his unique collaborations with Martin Scorsese where they committed to a wild and outrageous comedy based on a true story. DiCaprio played the real-life former stockbroker Jordan Belfort, who committed numerous frauds and scams while working at Stratton Oakmont.

“Literally the night I read the script”: The Leonardo DiCaprio Movie Martin Scorsese Agreed to Direct in Record Time Faced the Ultimate Oscar Snub

Scorsese’s film took that premise and dialed it to an 11 featuring outrageous NSFW scenes filled with drugs, s*x, and debauchery. However, that was not the only wild aspect of the film. The beginning minutes of the film show a lion casually walking inside the office amidst the chaotic atmosphere of the office and its employees.

VFX legend Robert Legato revealed on Corridor Crew’s newest episode of VFX Artists React (on YouTube ) that the film used a real lion for the scene but a clever VFX technique was employed to shoot the particular scene. Legato stated that he got the lion for one day and let a trainer lead the lion through the office as seen in The Wolf of Wall Street .

Later, they shot the same scene without the lion with people included. In the end, Legato and his team seamlessly blended the two and made it look like one shot. He said

“I got the lion for one day, we had to build a special cage. We couldn’t have the lion anywhere near you. I’d shoot a shot and then he (the trainer and the lion) would go, and they’d lock him back up and we put the people in. Every shot was done that way”

“He was such an obsessed human being”: Even Leonardo DiCaprio, Who Keeps His Life a Secret, Could Not Imagine How Crazy His Character From The Aviator Was

The power and magic of VFX are pretty amazing and Legato’s comments are a fascinating filmmaking aspect as to how such a wild scene was done that looks very real in the film. Scorsese being the master, must have suggested the use of a real lion to pull off this amazing feat with his VFX team led by Legato.

Martin Scorsese May Face Uphill Battle With His Frank Sinatra Biopic Yet Again

It was recently announced that Martin Scorsese will be reteaming with Leonardo DiCaprio for a biopic on the acclaimed American music icon Frank Sinatra . Scorsese has already tried to get a biopic done on Sinatra before. In a 2016 interview with The Toronto Sun , the director revealed that things did not work out with the project.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese Probably Have No Regrets For Missing Out on a Movie on Alexander The Great After Watching Its Box Office Collection

Scorsese stated that there were certain issues and aspects regarding how he wanted to approach the biopic that the surviving members of the Sinatra family were not comfortable with. He wanted to explore the singer’s dark side (his violent and hard-drinking behavior along with his connections with organized crime via The Guardian ). While Scorsese understands their concerns, he wants the biopic to be a proper exploration of Sinatra if he were to do it. He said,

“We can’t do it! I think it is finally over. They [remaining members of the Sinatra clan] won’t agree to it. Open it up again and I’m there! Certain things are very difficult for a family, and I totally understand. But, if they expect me to be doing it, they can’t hold back certain things. The problem is that the man was so complex. Everybody is so complex — but Sinatra in particular.”

Scorsese may have to face a similar battle yet again as Sinatra’s daughter Tina Sinatra has not yet given her approval for the project. Nevertheless, Variety reported that Jennifer Lawrence has been tapped in to star as Sinatra’s second wife Ava Gardner. It remains to be seen whether Scorsese and Sinatra’s family can find a middle ground so that the project happens this time.

The Wolf of Wall Street Sunglasses Scream Money and Success

The yachts don't hurt the image, mind you.

leonardo dicaprio yacht wolf of wall street

The Wolf of Wall Street is one of the most stylish films of the last few years. In amongst all the corruption and excess is a seriously cool 80’s wardrobe full of sharp tailoring, power ties, and slick haircuts.

The sunglasses in The Wolf of Wall Street also really stand out; particularly the Ray-Bans worn by Leonardo DiCaprio and the two-tone aviators worn by Jonah Hill. Read on to discover the exact sunglasses that Leo wears in the movie.

The Best Sunglasses from the Wolf of Wall Street Sunglasses

Leonardo DiCapri wears two standout pairs of sunglasses in The Wolf of Wall Street: Ray-Ban 4177 and Ray-Ban Original Wayfarers. Both pairs are notable due to their large lenses and acetate tortoiseshell frames.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ray-Ban 4147

Leonardo DiCaprio Ray-Bans in The Wolf of Wall Street

Leo wears the Ray-Ban 4147 (above) during a yacht scene. The glasses have an acetate tortoiseshell frame that is slightly squarer than the more common Wayfarers he wears at other points in the movie. The frame is large and almost reminiscent of aviator sunglasses .

Despite coming at a time in the movie when everything is beginning to go wrong for Jordan Belfort, DiCaprio still manages to look like he’s holding everything together by coming up with what is perhaps the wardrobe highlight of the movie.

He pairs the glasses, with a pastel-pink suit with huge collars. It’s a look you need a certain swagger to pull-off; luckily DiCaprio (and Belfort) have that in spades.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer

The Ray-Ban 4147 isn’t the only Ray-Ban DiCaprio wears. In an earlier scene, he combines a pair of Ray-Ban Original Wayfarers with a crisp white Ralph Lauren polo-shirt for a look that on paper appears quite simple but on the big screen, still manages to ooze wealth and success (pictured above).

While we often associate Wayfarers with a more disheveled rock-star look, the sharp angles and metal detailing on the hinges fit right in with Leo’s yuppie-chic outfit; once again proving that Wayfarers are one of the most adaptable styles of glasses out there.

Jonah Hill’s Two-Tone Aviators

leonardo dicaprio yacht wolf of wall street

Finally, we come to the sunglasses Jonah Hill wears in The Wolf of Wall Street. The glasses Hill wears are two-tone aviators. He pairs them with a stripey pastel shirt and an orange sweater tied over his shoulders for what we can only describe as the most preppy look we’ve ever seen.

The exact glasses he wears have proven difficult to identify. We reckon these two-tone shades from Gucci come pretty close, however.

We also have to give a special shoutout to the round tortoiseshell prescription specs Jonah Hill wears in other parts of the movie. They are an outstanding choice of eyewear.

The wolf of wall street’s “hidden” cgi detailed by vfx supervisor.

Robert Legato, the legendary VFX supervisor who worked on The Wolf of Wall Street highlights the subtle and brilliant use of CGI in the movie.

  • The CGI in The Wolf of Wall Street was used subtly and brilliantly, showcasing Scorsese's attention to detail.
  • This technology was revolutionized by James Cameron's Avatar, leading to more CGI use in various genres.
  • Despite the difficulty and cost of CGI, Scorsese's seamlessly blended computer-generated images with reality.

The Wolf of Wall Street ’s VFX supervisor breaks down the use of CGI in the modern classic. Directed by legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, this epic comedy crime film recounts the true story of stockbroker Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) and the rampant corruption of his New York brokerage firm, Stratton Oakmont. Upon release, The Wolf of Wall Street was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, which highlighted lead actor DiCaprio’s impressive performance, Scorsese’s stellar directing work and much more. However, one of the less appreciated aspects of the movie is its subtle and excellent use of CGI.

Now, in a recent video from Corridor Crew , The Wolf of Wall Street VFX supervisor Robert Legato highlights the different scenes in the movie where visual effects were required and used. The experienced VFX supervisor also emphasized the attention that was paid to tiny details while using visual effects . Read his comments below:

There’s a company in New York called Brainstorm, and we went out to the Hamptons and that’s where the real location wanted to be, and we photographed all the elements and all the stuff and this crappy house was somewhere else because there’s nothing about this that we could use. We can’t use the water, we can’t use anything. It was an ugly sin house on the inside, but at any rate, I was very happy with this. It was the first time I used a drone. I got the lion for one day. We had to build a special cage. We couldn’t have the lion anywhere near you. I mean this is true. Women, if they’re menstruating, can’t be on the set because it gets the lion worked up. I must have done this motion control. I designed the commercial which is supposed to look kinda goofy in the 1970s or whatever. So I’d shoot a shot, and then he would go, and they’d lock him back up, and then we would put the people in every shot was done that way.

The Use Of CGI In The Wolf of Wall Street Makes The Movie Even More Impressive

Historically, computer-generated imagery has been mainly utilized in the action and superhero genres as well as fantasy and sci-fi films. Even though CGI has been in use for some time now — Michael Crichton’s 1973 science fiction western was the first feature film to make use of this process — James Cameron’s Avatar revolutionized the use of the technology, carefully and brilliantly employing it for most of the movie’s extensive runtime.

Following Cameron’s groundbreaking use of visual effects, the technology became more commonplace, extending to other genres. While CGI remains incredibly difficult and expensive to get right, The Wolf of Wall Street manages to employ the technology in both a subtle and brilliant way , showcasing Martin Scorsese's willingness to think outside the box as well as his stunning attention to detail.

How Accurate The Wolf Of Wall Street Is To The True Story

Without Legato outrightly pointing out the scenes that required visual effects, except the scene with the lion, it would be difficult for most viewers to spot what image or scene was computer generated and what’s real. This is testament to how seamless the use of CGI was in The Wolf of Wall Street , evidencing just how much work and attention was paid to its creation, and all this considered makes the movie ever more impressive.

Real footage from Wolf of Wall Street beach party as Jordan Belfort's ex-wife confirms disturbing act happened

The video reveals that the party scenes in the film are not too far off what was depicted.

The Wolf of Wall Street has become an absolute classic, despite only being 11-years-old.

Following the lavish and outrageous life of stockbroker Jordan Belfort, the film looks at his meteoric rise to the top and sharp spiral down, featuring a lot of booze, drugs , sex and profanities on the way.

What's there not to like?

But you may have seen the movie numerous times and thought that everything seems a bit far-fetched, a bit exaggerated for Hollywood, like most films are.

Well, according to Jordan Belfort's ex-wife Dr. Nadine Macaluso, you couldn't be further from the truth.

Played by Margot Robbie in the hit film under the name Naomi Lapaglia, Macaluso recently made an appearance on the Anything Goes with James English and discussed the 2013 film.

Apparently, most of it did really happen , as she revealed that about '90 percent' of the film was accurate, as she even said that real life was actually even more over the top than what it showed'.

The outlandish party scenes were pretty accurate, according to Jordan Belfort's ex-wife. (Paramount Pictures)

And if you've seen the film, that's pretty hard to imagine.

Real footage of a party hosted by Belfort himself has resurfaced following the interview, so you won't need to imagine it - you can see the madness for yourself.

The Wolf is indeed on the roof hyping the crowd up, with hundreds of people in and around the pool getting rowdy as he carried out one of his famous speeches, which you can see many of in the film.

It makes you think about how crazy the events must have been, if they had to be watered down for an R-rated film.

Margot Robbie had her breakout role by portraying Nadine Macaluso in the film. (Paramount Pictures)

On the Anything Goes podcast, Macaluso recalled the party where she met Belfort for the first time, which is also shown in the movie, as Belfort's best friend exposes himself in front of her in a hard-to-watch scene.

Apparently, it's true again.

Macaluso said: "I went to that party with my boyfriend and just like the movie shows, someone exposed themselves to me.

"I was totally freaked out, I said to him 'we gotta get outta here, these people are nuts'.

"I didn't know they were all on Quaaludes at the time, I was 22, I didn't even know what a Quaalude was, and we left.

"But then I guess Jordan had set his sights on me and decided he wanted to date me."

In the film, it was Jonah Hill's character who did that, and actual footage from that party shows that what happens in the movie lines up pretty closely to what really happened to these people .

  • Spielberg's uncredited contributions on the set of Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street helped enhance the film's spectacular and captivating scenes.
  • Spielberg's expertise in shot selection and composition, combined with Scorsese's understanding of the text, made the film a mesmerizing portrayal of Jordan Belfort's charisma and the allure of wealth.

It wouldn't be surprising if there was a sense of competition between powerhouse directors Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg , though thankfully, that doesn't seem to be the case. Both around the same age and emerging in roughly the same period during the New Hollywood era, their filmmaking skills and influence are undisputed, as evident in movies like Jurassic Park , Jaws , Raging Bull , and Taxi Driver , to name a few. On the set of Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street , during the filming of a pivotal scene, Spielberg lent his two cents , and in the process, helped make Scorsese's great movie an even better one under his guise.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.

What 'Wolf of Wall Street' Scene Did Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese Work on Together?

When Scorsese, along with screenwriter Terence Winter , decided to adapt Jordan Belfort 's memoir detailing his morally bankrupt dealings in the stock market trade and life of debauchery, there was no scenario where the film would be tame or anything that wasn't an unflinching portrayal for that matter. Anchored by a brilliant larger-than-life performance by Leonardo DiCaprio , The Wolf of Wall Street is a roller coaster ride that is equally exhilarating and punishing. Scorsese lures the viewer to be entranced by the lavish lifestyle and unbridled hedonism of Belfort (DiCaprio) and his stock trading colleagues and friends. In a sobering twist of fate, his characters do not undergo repentance, as the director shows that the unchecked greed of capitalism and general fascination with the criminal underworld allows people like Belfort to walk away unscathed. The film, released on Christmas of 2013, was a box office hit and subsequently earned 5 nominations at the Academy Awards.

Ridley Scott Was Supposed to Direct 'The Wolf of Wall Street,' and Then...

In the film, Belfort, who established Stratton Oakmont with Donnie Azoff ( Jonah Hill ), the brokerage house that defrauded shareholders, countless shareholders, secured the IPO (initial public offering) of Steve Madden ( Jake Hoffman ), a fashion retailer specializing in footwear. As was the status quo for Belfort and Azoff, this was executed under illegal means, as both secretly owned 85% of the company. Belfort brings Madden onto the stage on the trade room floor where Belfort asserts his power and riles up his pack of wolves. Madden, a successful entrepreneur, lacks any sense of stage presence. This is where Belfort takes over and invigorates the carnivorous urge within his brokers to sell Steve Madden stock.

This scene requires a spectacle contained with gravitas. An infectious charisma is how Belfort was able to build a corrupt empire from scratch. As a master filmmaker capable of reaching any cinematic height, capturing Belfort's king-like influence was within his powers, but the director was fortunate enough to be graced with the presence of Steven Spielberg, who happened to visit the set during the filming of the Steve Madden scene . The convergence of star power and cinematic genius was overwhelming for even a radiant star like DiCaprio. "That was like a double-whammy for everyone on set," DiCaprio described in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter . "Everyone who had to act that day was like, 'Spielberg and Scorsese are watching me? Jesus Christ!'"

Steven Spielberg Was Originally Just Stopping by 'Wolf of Wall Street's Set

According to Scorsese, Spielberg stopped by merely to say hello, but in a matter of no time, he was consulting Scorsese on the best way to position and frame shots of DiCaprio speaking on the trade room floor . "I think you should move the camera," Scorsese said in a jocular manner, loosely detailing Spielberg's uncredited contributions. Jonah Hill was equally struck by the jarring image of two cinematic geniuses sitting beside each other discussing shots. In retrospect, Scorsese was fond of Spielberg's participation in the filming of The Wolf of Wall Street , as it reminded him of their frequent collaboration throughout the 1970s.

Spielberg's aid in the shooting of the Steve Madden sequence is identifiable to the average viewer because it requires an enthralling injection of entertainment. Scorsese's paraphrased suggestion from Spielberg to "move the camera" is realized in the tracking shot sweeping through the crowd of the trade room floor once Belfort states his battle orders. The camera glides forward, then backward, and pivots its angle. This is a signature shot in Spielberg's arsenal of visual language . While Scorsese's direction is certainly nothing short of electric, this tracking shot provides the kinetic energy that would be contagious among the stock traders of Stratton Oakmont. The crowd seemingly extends with no end in sight thanks to the propulsion of the camera.

Steven Spielberg's Simple Suggestion Had a Big Impact

This scene, and to a larger extent the basis of The Wolf of Wall Street , is an exercise in spectacle. Just as essential as Spielberg's ingenuity in shot selection and composition is Scorsese's understanding of his text. He recognizes Belfort as a maestro of hostility and a visceral temptation for wealth. Something as innocuous as the camera following Belfort as he paces along the stage is crucial to grabbing the attention of the viewer. The Wolf of Wall Street is an exercise in alluring the audience to the charisma of Jordan Belfort , just as his financial victims were. Who is better at capturing the hearts and minds of general audiences than Steven Spielberg?

Much of the legend surrounding Spielberg is his innate ability to conceive of the best possible shot immediately upon walking onto a set. His likeness as a filmmaking prodigy was further psycho-analyzed in his autobiographical film, The Fabelmans . On a similar wavelength to the long-believed myth that the director cemented himself in the industry by sneaking onto the Universal Studios lot , Spielberg arrived at the set of a film he has zero ties to and conjured up shots to make the film better. This was not just any film. This was The Wolf of Wall Street , a film by a peer of equal success and skill and a good friend, Martin Scorsese.
