Jeff Bezos’ 417-Foot Yacht Drops Anchor in South Florida amid Move to Miami

The Amazon founder announced his move earlier this month

Jeff Bezos has brought his 417-foot-long yacht to Florida!

The Amazon founder's $500-million dollar vessel named Koru dropped anchor in Port Everglades, reports WPLG . Its massive size made it have to be parked next to an oil tanker and alongside other large cargo carriers, per Gizmodo .

Koru is the largest sailing yacht in the world and features a trio of masts and several decks, according to Boat International .

It was first spotted at sea earlier this year . Its arrival on the southeastern coast comes nearly a month after the entrepreneur, 59, announced that he was relocating to Miami from Seattle. Bezos announced his move in an Instagram post published on Nov. 2.

"I've lived in Seattle longer than I've lived anywhere else and have so many amazing memories here. As exciting as the move is, it's an emotional decision for me. Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart," he shared in the caption.

The post included a clip of Bezos giving a tour of Amazon's first office, which was filmed by his father. He wrote in the post that his parents, along with his fiancée Lauren Sánchez , inspired his move.

"My parents [ Miguel and Jacklyn ] have always been my biggest supporters," Bezos wrote. "They recently moved back to Miami, the place we lived when I was younger (Miami Palmetto High class of '82 — GO Panthers!) I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren and I love Miami."

Bezos and Sánchez, 53, took their relationship public  in January 2019. PEOPLE confirmed that the two are engaged in May. The news came after the two were seen traveling on the yacht during a romantic European getaway .

Apart from having a  wooden sculpture resembling Sánchez , the boat became the couple's preferred method of transportation during their summer travels, including stops in Saint-Tropez and multiple parts of Italy . The yacht was also the location of the couple's engagement party in August.

After the celebration, an insider told PEOPLE that "they had an amazing time with close friends" and that "they're not planning the wedding yet."

"They're still just enjoying the engagement," the source said.

Amazon founder, space enthusiast , and the third wealthiest man in the world Jeff Bezos has a parking problem with his mega-yacht .

At a Florida marina this week it became apparent that the $500m ship was too big to be moored with the other private yachts at Port Everglades.

At an impressive 417ft in length, “Koru” — the Maori word meaning new life or regeneration — had to be moored alongside oil tankers, container ships and the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship.

Port Everglades is a major gateway for Caribbean cruises and international trade, but the yacht section cannot accommodate vessels larger than 400ft.

At just over that length (almost twice the length of an Airbus A380 or equivalent to four blue whales) other accommodations had to be made.

A spokesperson for the port told The Times that it was in an area for energy ships and that when such large yachts come into port, they are docked wherever there is space.

Koru came into port last week from Gibraltar and with three masts is the second-largest sailing vessel in the world after Sailing Yacht A, owned by Russian fertiliser billionaire Andrey Melnichenko and designed by Philippe Starck.

While it is pipped in length, it is nevertheless the tallest sailing yacht in the world with its masts reaching 230ft into the air.

Despite its enormous size — or perhaps because of it — Koru has a support vessel, the Arbeona, on which Bezos keeps his helicopter, jet skis, and luxury cars. That 246ft boat is docked four miles away at Dania Beach.

It costs an estimated $25m per year to staff and operate Koru, which has three decks and a pool. The Amazon founder proposed to fiancée Lauren Sanchez onboard over the summer after five years of dating.

During an interview with Vogue , Sanchez was asked about her apparent resemblance to the figurehead of the yacht — depicting a woman carved in the style of a Roman goddess with long hair and a flowing gown — after press suggested that it was a carving of her. However, according to Sanchez, that speculation is not true.

“I’m very flattered, but it’s not,” she said, before adding that the figurehead was one of Bezos’ favourite mythological figures, Freyja, the goddess associated with love, sex, war and gold.

She also poked fun at what the statue would look like “if it was” her, as she jokingly made the gesture of having larger breasts.

Bezos and Sanchez recently announced they are relocating from Seattle to Miami to be nearer his mother and adoptive father who are both in their late 70s.

The billionaire has bought two neighbouring properties on Indian Creek Island alongside Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Tom Brady, and Norman Braman, who owns the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Is Finally Ready to Set Sail

Amazon’s founder has been spotted on Koru, a massive schooner with a design that evokes the golden age of sailing in the early 20th century.

Koru, a very large sailboat with three masts and a dark navy hull, sails on a calm blue sea.

By Kevin Koenig

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

Jeff Bezos’ superyacht is in Florida. It’s so big it has to anchor at a seaport.

  • Madeleine Marr Miami Herald (TNS)

South Florida, meet The Koru.

That’s the name of Jeff Bezos’ colossal yacht that just dropped anchor in Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The word means “new beginnings” in Maori, the language spoken by indigenous Polynesians of mainland New Zealand, where  the Amazon founder’s private jet was spotted  in 2020.

How ginormous is this triple-masted behemoth? Roughly 400 feet long and 250 feet tall, it’s the size of a cruise ship. That ginormous.

The  luxury schooner  is so big it can’t even hang with other leisure ships; she reportedly is parked near two oil tankers. It has two pools, a hot tub, multiple lounges, dining areas and bars, and perhaps the pièce de résistance, a wooden figurehead on the prow rumored to be modeled after Bezos’ fiancée,  Lauren Sanchez .

The 59-year-old billionaire shelled out about $500M for his snazzy new toy, which was built just for him in the Netherlands by Oceanco, the company that also constructed Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ superyacht,  the Bravo Eugenia .

Get used to seeing The Koru around, especially if you set sail on a vacation. Bezos, a Palmetto High alum,  lives back here  full time now, after spending three decades in Seattle, busy reinventing the way the world shops.

Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos’ 410FT Oceanco ‘Koru’ Sailing Yacht Docks In South Florida

Oceanco Yacht

Synonymous with entrepreneurial success, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has channeled his passion for ocean exploration through an impressive fleet of luxury marine vessels, including superyachts and megayachts. These magnificent marine builds represent Bezos’ deep-seated fascination with the mysteries of the ocean. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, his yachts serve as a gateway to maritime adventures, allowing him to traverse the globe’s waters in remarkable comfort and style. Jeff Bezos is making headlines in the luxury yacht world as his vessel, Koru by Oceanco, finished its long-awaited journey around the world and made its appearance in Fort Lauderdale at a South Florida seaport.

Measuring an astonishing 410 feet in length, the modern sailing yacht stands out as the largest in the world. Its sheer size is so enormous that the original plans to dock Koru at the Port of Everglades were redirected to Fort Lauderdale where it would stay parked next to gigantic oil tankers. The exterior showcases an exterior design in collaboration between Oceanco and Dykstra Naval Architects, perfectly blending mondern and traditional yacht building.

Inside, the interior highlights a contemporary style with natural wood tones complemented by a palette of warm neutrals, courtesy of Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi Interior Design and Decoration. The three-masted sailing yacht offers ample deck space to provide a variety of breathtaking views, three jacuzzis, and a swimming pool. Now that Oceanco’s Koru sailing yacht is in South Florida with Jeff Bezos, we expect to see its marine presence all over social media. Jeff Bezos’ yacht drops anchor at Port Everglades

Veronica Crespo , Digital Journalist

PORT EVERGLADES, Fla. – The behemoth boat owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has dropped anchor in South Florida.

The half-billion-dollar vessel named Koru has arrived at Port Everglades.

The 417-foot boat is the world’s largest sailing yacht.

Bezos recently revealed he is relocating to Miami after nearly three decades in Seattle.

According to an Instagram post, Bezos, 59, said he wants to be close to his parents who recently moved back to Miami.

He also says the move makes sense because of Blue Origin’s operations in Cape Canaveral. NASA recently granted to rocket company a $3.4 billion contract to lead a team to develop a lunar lander named Blue Moon. It will be used to transport astronauts to the lunar surface as early as 2029.

Earlier this summer, Bezos purchased a home in Indian Creek Village in August . The exclusive area in Miami is known as “Billionaire Bunker” where he will be neighbors with celebrities including Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner.

Bezos paid $68 million for the three-bedroom, waterfront home, which sits on 2.8 acres (1.1 hectares), Fortune magazine and Bloomberg reported.

The Amazon founder stepped down as CEO in 2021 to devote more time to philanthropy and other projects .

Bezos graduated from Palmetto Senior High in 1982.

Inside Jeff Bezos’ 417ft superyacht Koru that billionaire is forced to dock in a seaport because of its extreme size

JEFF Bezos' massive superyacht has barely squeezed into a busy US port after it couldn't fit in a private dock.

The 417-foot-tall Koru is finally nestled between commercial cruise ships and oil tankers in Florida after five years of construction and testing came to an end.

Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru has barely squeezed into a Florida port due to its massive size

The tallest ship in the world struggled to anchor in Fort Lauderdale, just 30 minutes north of Miami, after a two-week journey from Gibraltar, Spain , the Daily Mail reports.

Koru, which cost more than $500 million, was pictured last week at Port Everglades floating between massive oil tankers and the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship.

Bezos will reportedly bankroll a $16,500 per week stay at the port, which is a flash in the pan compared to the estimated $25 million in annual costs Koru will rack up.

A full staff is required to sail and care for the superyacht which has three masts that stand up to 230 feet tall.

It also comes with the support vessel Abeona - a 264-foot garage holding Bezos' luxury cars, private helicopter, and jet skis - which is parked four miles away in Dania Beach.

The third-richest man in the world, Bezos should have no problem funding the massive purchase with his estimated $170 billion in wealth.

The name Koru means "new beginnings" in Maori - a language native to an adventuring Polynesian people group of the same name.

The tycoon's boat docked after a series of sea trials to make sure it was ready for the Amazon owner.

It was built in the Netherlands by luxury custom Yacht builder Oceanco which had more than enough experience to handle the job.

But this didn't mean there weren't headaches along the way.

The luxury boat is so big that the historic Koningshaven bridge at  Rotterdam  harbor was planned to be dismantled to get it out.

Despite its goliath appearance, Koru is a modern-day architectural masterpiece, inspired by the fictional boat The Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean.

It has three decks including one with a swimming pool, and is twice the length of the second largest sailing ship, Sailing Yacht A.

Painted a deep midnight blue, Koru boasts gold accents with a polished wooden figurehead on the front.

The interiors are reported to be inspired by Eos, which is a 305ft yacht that belongs to his close friend, Barry Diller, who is the founder and former CEO of Fox.

Its creation sparked controversy with Dutch citizens who pelted the boat with eggs to try and spoil the maiden voyage.

Despite the wind-powered sailing, it's estimated the massive Koru will generate 7,154 tons of carbon emission each year powering luxurious amenities like heating, AC, pool, and sauna.

Koru will join a fleet of superyachts, helicopters and planes already owned by the American entrepreneur and his millionaire fiance, Lauren Sanchez.

The couple announced this month they would be leaving Seattle and returning to Bezos' home in Miami.

He had lived in the city where Amazon is headquartered for 29 years.

The 350-foot-long Black Pearl pictured here is NOT Jeff Bezos' new superyacht. But it was built by ... [+] the same company that's building Bezos' new yacht and it will be similar in its massive scale.

Am I surprised the world’s richest man ordered of what David Pendelton and Brad Stone of Bloomberg Wealth report is a 417-foot-long superyacht that will be equipped with three massive masts? Um…no.

Nor am I surprised that Jeff Bezos who is worth around $185 billion continues to sell some of his Amazon stock . He obviously has some time on his hands now that he’s stepped down from being the CEO of Amazon. And, like Elon Musk , he has a space  program to fund.

Jeff Bezos is richest person in the world and he's building a fleet of yachts

But I am surprised that details, about what will no doubt be the most identifiable superyacht in the world when it’s launched have stayed as secret as they have. But then again, NDAs take on a bit more power when hundreds of millions of dollars are involved. And no yacht that is 117-feet longer than a football field can stay a secret forever.

What we do know—sort of—is not only has Bezos’ ordered what will be the largest sailing yacht ever built in the Netherlands. Reports say the superyacht shipyard Oceanco is the builder. And that makes perfect sense since Oceanco has built Black Pearl, the award-winning, 350-foot-long, three-masted superyacht pictured above. And Oceanco also built the 357-foot-long Bravo Eugenia for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones .

While no official images have been released of Bezos’ new 417-foot-long-sailing superyacht that Oceanco has been reportedly building for the last few years. It is not hard to imagine that it might share some of the characteristics that have made  Black Pearl  such a recognizable superyacht. Except Bezos’ yacht will be way, way bigger.

Sailing Yacht A owned by Russian tycoon Andrey Melnichenko is still the largest sailing super yacht ... [+] in the world

Actually, he’s buying a whole fleet of yachts. Not only is Bezos reportedly buying one of the largest sailing superyachts in the world ( Superyacht A  measuring 469-feet-long and owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko is still the largest). He’s also reported to be buying a “smaller” support vessel that will follow the big yacht around carrying all the “toys” (personal submarine, aircraft, various other yachts, cars etc.) that just won’t fit on the mothership. And by mothership, I mean superyacht. Not spaceship. That’s a whole other story.

Stay tuned for much more.

An Inside Look at Jeff Bezos’ $500 Million Superyacht and What It Costs To Keep It Afloat

C liché but true, the second-richest man on the planet, according to Forbes , owns the tallest sailing yacht in the world . In fact, the 417-foot Koru is so big, it has its own 250-foot support vessel .

Priced at $500 million, the Koru hit the sea for the first time in 2023 and has since ferried Jeff Bezos and company around the globe. Complete with three massive 229-foot masts, it can reach a top speed under sail of 20 knots, according to the New York Post — which is approximately 23 miles per hour.

Made for a group, up to 18 guests can set sail on the yacht, allowing Bezos to bring family and friends on vacation with him. Here’s a look at the Koru’s extravagant features and how much it costs to operate his floating mansion.

Also take a look at Bezos’ mansion collection.

Key Features

As expected Bezos’ yacht is dripping with luxury. With a net worth of $203.8 billion — as of May 4, 2024, according to Forbes — he can afford to outfit the Koru with nothing but the best and he did just that.

The superyacht has three outdoor decks, with two containing swimming pools, according to the New York Post. It also features a cinema, several lounges and multiple business areas, according to Luxuo .

Highly personalized, the yacht is complete with a figurehead modeled after Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez. Even its masts are luxurious, as the Amazon founder chose in-boom furlers, which keep the canvases at the bottom of the mast above the deck, creating a pristine and spacious rope-free deck.

For You: Make Yourself Money Smart: 20 ChatGPT Prompts To Increase Your Wealth

Support Vessel

One of the most shocking features of the Koru is the fact that it requires its own support vessel. The $75 million Abeona features a helipad that Sanchez has been spotted using to park her personal helicopter, according to the New York Post.

Designed to carry extra gear, four jet skis, two fast launches and a dinghy were spotted on the Abeona during a 2023 trip to Mallorca, Spain, according to the New York Post. It’s also capable of lifting a small submarine, but Bezos isn’t believed to own one — at least not yet.

Additionally, the support ship has two extra staterooms, which can accommodate four guests. This could come in handy if Bezos wants to entertain a larger group than can fit on the Koru.

On-Board Crew

It probably isn’t a surprise that operating both the Koru and the Abeona is no small task. From staff to drive the boats and maintain them to caring for guests onboard, Bezos needs a small army at sea.

The Koru has a crew of up to 36 people, according to The New York Post. If you think that’s a lot, the Abeona requires up to 45 crew and support staff.

Annual Operating Costs

Purchasing the Koru and Abeona cost Bezos more than half a billion dollars, but his expenses didn’t end there. As you might imagine, the annual cost to maintain a superyacht and its own enormous supporting yacht is more than most people earn in a lifetime.

The Koru costs approximately $25 million in operating expenses per year, according to the Daily Mail . Much less, but still sky-high, Bezos spends around $5 to $10 million on annual maintenance costs for the Abeona, according to Super Yacht Fan ).

When their owners are on dry land, yachts have to find a parking space. However, even this doesn’t always come cheap for Bezos and the Koru.

In November 2023, the billionaire’s yacht arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but was too big to fit in the port with all the outer superyachts, according to the Daily Mail. Therefore, it had to be docked with cruise ships at Port Everglades, at a rate of $16,500 per week.

While one week of storage might be more than the average person can afford, picking up the tab for any number of weeks would clearly be no issue for Bezos. While his superyacht and the many expenses surrounding it are clearly astronomical, he’s still living well within his budget.

Did Jeff Bezos put a sculpture of his girlfriend on the bow of his new $500 million megayacht? You be the judge.

  • A sculpture on Jeff Bezos' new $500 million megayacht has tongues wagging: Is it his girlfriend?
  • Bezos and his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, were recently spotted on the yacht for the first time.
  • The watercraft is named Koru, which is Māori for loop or coil and signifies new beginnings.

Insider Today

A sculpture on Jeff Bezos' new megayacht has people wondering whether it's his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez .

The figurehead on the prow of the 417-foot watercraft shows a woman with long hair in a flowing dress, as seen in photos first published by the Daily Mail . She appears to be wearing a necklace that may feature the symbol for koru, which is the name of the ship. Koru means "loop" or "coil" in the Māori language and often signifies new beginnings.

Related stories

Bezos and Sanchez, who went public with their relationship in 2019, were first spotted on the new $500 million superyacht earlier this week off the coast of Spain.

The vessel, believed to be the largest sailing yacht in the world, had a rocky road to completion. It caused an uproar when its Dutch shipmaker, Oceanco, requested that a historic bridge in Rotterdam in the Netherlands be dismantled for the yacht to pass because its masts were too tall to pass through underneath.

The 100-year-old Koningshaven Bridge, nicknamed "De Hef" by locals, had been renovated in 2017; after that, the city had vowed not to take it apart again, according to Dutch broadcaster Rijnmond .

Residents grew outraged and even threatened to egg the yacht if the bridge was dismantled, prompting Oceanco to withdraw its request and quietly tow away the yacht to another shipyard without its masts, which were installed later to avoid the clearance issue.

Koru was seen  doing sea trials , which are comprised of several tests and usually mark one of the last phases of construction, in February. The yacht made its maiden voyage in April when it left Oceanco's facilities to travel to Gibraltar on the way to Bezos.

Check out the photos of the yacht's figurehead on the Daily Mail .

Jeff bezos spent $237 million on florida mansions — billionaires flock to 'upside down' tax haven where rich pay less than poor.

The Sunshine State has become a magnet for billionaires seeking tax relief. Among the latest to join the trend is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who has recently expanded his real estate holdings in Miami’s exclusive Billionaire Bunker area. Bezos’ acquisitions include three properties, bringing his total investment in the neighborhood to $237 million.

Bezos’ purchases include a $90 million deal in 2024 and a $79 million mansion bought in October 2023. The mansion, which spans 19,000 square feet, sits adjacent to his first property in Indian Creek, acquired for $68 million. According to Bloomberg, Bezos has saved nearly $600 million by relocating and selling his Amazon stock in Florida.

"Going to Florida will obviously eliminate your individual tax burden, and many of these billionaires clearly have that flexibility," explained Jared Walczak, vice president of the National Tax Foundation, as reported by the New York Post.

Don't Miss:

Warren Buffett once said, "If you don't find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die." Here's how you can collect passive rental income without being a landlord .

Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are bullish on one city that could dethrone New York and become the new financial capital of the US. Investing in its booming real estate market has never been more accessible .

Florida’s tax system, often described as "upside-down," is the most regressive in the United States. Wealthy households pay a smaller share of their income in taxes compared to low- and middle-income families. According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), the bottom 20% of Florida taxpayers face an effective state and local tax rate nearly five times higher than the top 1%.

The ITEP’s latest report, "Who Pays?", highlights that the average effective tax rate is 13.2% for the lowest-income families, 9.1% for the middle 20%, and just 2.7% for the top-earning 1%. This disparity means income inequality in Florida increases after state and local taxes are applied.

The regressive nature of Florida’s tax system, which ranks it among the least fair in the U.S., stems from several key features. The absence of a personal income tax means the state must rely more heavily on other forms of taxation, such as sales taxes, which disproportionately affect lower-income individuals. Sales taxes are considered regressive because they take a larger percentage of income from lower earners than from higher earners.

Become a real estate investor today — How to start small by mirroring BlackRock's big move .

The regressive nature of Florida’s tax system stems from its reliance on sales taxes, which disproportionately affect lower-income individuals. Although the state’s property tax rate averages 0.80%, below the national average, it does not compensate for the lack of income tax revenue. This system places a greater financial burden on lower-income families, who pay a higher proportion of their income in taxes.

While Florida’s tax policies lure billionaires , the consequences extend beyond mere tax fairness. The state’s reliance on sales and property taxes can strain public services and infrastructure, as the growing population of wealthy residents demands more. Meanwhile, lower-income families may struggle to keep up with rising costs of living and limited access to resources.

Florida’s tax system attracts the wealthy, but it raises questions about fairness and the economic pressures on the state’s less affluent residents. As billionaires like Bezos continue to flock to Florida, the debate over tax equity remains pressing.

Passive income investments are one of the most trusted methods for riding out a recession, so it's no surprise that people are turning to this Jeff Bezos-backed startup to generate monthly rental income without having to purchase their own property .

Mark Zuckerberg's Yacht Goes Dark - What Do Maritime Rules Say About AIS Tracking?

Mark Zuckerberg yacht Launchpad

Zuckerberg turning off his AIS tracking isn't illegal, in fact it's common for yacht owners to 'go dark.' So what are the rules surrounding AIS?

A couple weeks ago, we reported the launch of the Zuckeryacht -- that being Mark Zuckerberg's impressive new superyacht Launchpad .

The Facebook founder managed to scoop up the $300 million superyacht , thus allowing him to skip the line at the dock and immediately go nautical.

The yacht was built by Feadship and carries a 387-foot LOA with over 5000 GT in volume, making it the largest boat ever built in The Netherlands.

Zuckerberg's ability to swoop in and buy the vessel when already complete (normally superyachts are commissioned years in advance) raised several questions among yacht enthusiasts. How can a yacht that's already built in The Netherlands, intended for a sanctioned foreign owner, be sold to a U.S. buyer? It turns out the deal was arranged with the help (and legal authority) of the Dutch government, so all is well. Upon completion of the deal, Launchpad immediately left The Netherlands and headed for Gibraltar.

After the Gibraltar sea trial, it was assumed Launchpad and her $30 million and 220-foot support vessel Wingman would head to the U.S. to link up with Zuckerberg, who has property in San Francisco and Hawaii, among others.

And they did, when his fleet turned up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and docked next to Jeff Bezos' mammoth Koru sailing yacht .

This is where it appears the tech tycoons adopted the same stealthy protocol. Bezos ' went dark ,' as they say in the nautical parlance. Now Zuckerberg has done the same.

So what happens now?

Assuming we're interested in maritime rules (which we are), and not pop culture fandom (which we're not), according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) AIS regulations state that any vessel over 500 GT must use its AIS tracker during an "international voyage." Suffice to say, the Zuckerboat certainly qualifies at over 10x that size, and one would think a jaunt into the Caribbean qualifies as an international voyage. Bezos' yacht Koru is 417 feet long and has three masts that are 230 feet high, so it's not exactly discrete, either.

What is AIS , you may be asking? It stands for Automatic Information System and it transmits a vessel's data in real-time so other vessels on the water can be aware of its location and heading. B oats equipped with AIS-enabled displays can see the positions of other AIS-equipped boats up to 46 nautical miles away, even if they are behind obstructions like an island that would normally block radar. The information supplied for each vessel can vary, but the data can include the boat’s size, draft, position, speed, direction, cargo, destination, and more.

Both of Zuckerberg's boats went dark in the Caribbean Sea as Launchpad was en route to Jamaica and support vessel Wingman was headed to Belize City.

But the important detail is that AIS information is public, and sites like MarineTrafic allow you to search up any AIS-enabled vessel to view its data.

At the moment, Launchpad appears to be docked in the Panama Canal. Wingman appears to be in the same place .

Does that mean their AIS trackers have been disabled? It's possible. It's common for owners seeking privacy to go dark, but it's not necessarily illegal and there are other considerations. The last location signal from Launchpad was sent two days ago.

But what are the repercussions for turning off your AIS? According to eSysman Superyachts in the video below, it can be illegal, but enforcement is muddy and there are some legitimate security concerns that make 'going dark' a reasonable, or even necessary, maneuver.

According to the IMO, "the regulation requires AIS to be fitted aboard all ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards engaged on international voyages, cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards not engaged on international voyages and all passenger ships irrespective of size... Ships fitted with AIS shall maintain AIS in operation at all times except where international agreements, rules or standards provide for the protection of navigational information."

The U.S. Coast Guard has issued broad scale warnings to mariners who turn off their AIS. They've even been known to pursue penalties for AIS infractions by fining a vessel's owner . The fines aren't cheap, either. But, in most cases the targets are commercial vessels within their waters, especially fishing boats. The rules are muddier for recreational boats, even if they're as large, or larger, than commercial ships. There are entire case studies devoted to AIS cheaters.

So the answer is this: it depends on the jurisdiction, international waters complicate the issue, and private recreational vessels are rarely, if ever, the worst offenders. There are also things to consider with relation to personal security for owners and crew, not simply the need for privacy.

The rules are also more relaxed outside the U.S., too. Especially for high value owners.

Wherever you're headed Mr. Zuckerberg, we hope you enjoy your summer aboard the Zuckerfleet.
