WINDANCER, a 1977 Islander Islander 36 is one of the most successful designs ever, there were 770 Islander 36 footers produced. This one has been updated with new sails, new bimini and the 4108 Perkins has less than a thousand hours. even now it makes an excellent racer/cruiser.

The Islander 36 was built from 1971 to 1985, making it one of the longest-lived 36-footers ever on the U.S. market. More than 750 of the Alan Gurney-designed racer-cruiser sloops were built, with production spanning almost the entire history of Islander Yachts. Unlike a lot of boats with long production histories, there are relatively few differences between the first and last Islander 36s built.

All in all, the Islander 36 fast-sailing boat, With proper, modern sail-handling equipment, it could easily be handled by a couple for shorthanded cruising. With good sails and a smooth bottom, it is also can be a competitive PHRF club racer. Very fast for a comfortable cruising boat. The boat seems to be a good compromise between being light enough to sail well and heavy enough to be safe and solid. It has been described by owners as comfortable, stable, quick, and roomy. Even by todays standards, the hull proportions of the Islander 36 are nearly ideal for a modern racer-cruiser. The beam is moderate and carried well aft, offering fairly good hull volume aft, Despite the age of the design, the I36 is not dated in appearance. You could even say that the boat is a modern classic.

This Islander 36 was used as a live-aboard for a while. The seller reports it's a good boat with a strong motor. The bottom was painted around 2018. It's unknown what year the Westerbeke was installed. The owner indicates the keel bolts and mast footing were epoxied in for corrosion resistance. For drinking water, there's a tankless reverse osmosis system, and the head has a newer 9-gallon holding tank. The Nav system will need a new display for the wind speed, depth meter. With some TLC, this Islander 36 can be brought back to her original glory. Stock #338252 1974 Islander 36, a good boat with a Westerbeke 44a 4-cylinder diesel inboard. Whether you're looking for a weekender on the water or planning on doing more serious sailing, the Islander 36 is ready for your new adventures. With her large cockpit and roomy interior, you can invite your friends along. Her 4 berths make her capable of sleeping up to 6 people. Two in the V-berth, 2 in the fold-out berth to port, the settee to starboard and the quarter berth aft makes 6. If you do end up with a boat full of people, you can unfold and extend the salon table to accommodate a meal or cards for everybody. Or, folded away, she offers a lot of interior room. The enclosed head has a toilet and sink, and the galley is a nice place to prepare snacks with the 3-burner stove and refrigerator. Just in front of the aft quarter berth is the Nav station. The engine is the 40 HP Westerbeke diesel, which is plenty big for the job. It hasn't been used a lot. Mainly to get into and out of the slip. Her sails consist of the main and the rolling furler jib. The previous owner left a few more sails onboard and we're not sure exactly what they are.

1979 Islander 36 36' Islander '79 "Islandia"  The Islander 36 is a timeless classic. Some 40 years later its classic lines still capture the eye. A beautiful sailing yacht as well as a comfortable live aboard. One of the features of the Islander is a very gradual companionway step set up which makes it dog friendly. Easily single handed or with a crew of six. Come see your next adventure!

It's easy access to bolts to remove it. Previous owner installed a new bulk head on the starboard side where forward chainplate is attached. The bulkhead was cut about 2" short of hull; he added a filler material to make up for the difference. It is strong, and only visible from inside the cabinet.  Deck is clean but could use a coat of paint, or not. There is crazing on the deck. The Amercoat 450h I put on the topsides covered all the crazing. Nothing memtioned above will effect how the boat sails, she is ready to go. She's an older boat, so you can expect some maintnance. She sails like a dream. I36 has been circumnavigated, so it will take you where you want to go. my boat is pretty much ready, it could use some solar panels; but I've finished all of the work that needs to be done out of the water. she's a great live aboard, and capable sailor. fiberglass floor in the interior, which I love because you can just wash her down and no wood to deal with. The boat has minimal teak, or wood which equals less bright work. I inherited a boat from my dad when he passed away. I've been working on boats for a few years now, with dreams of sailing around surfing. One thing I didn't take into consideration; I'm finally almost ready to go,

Selling my 1973 Islander sailboat! The Islander 36 was listed as one of Cruising World's Top 20 Sailboats, and Zac Sunderland just sailed one around the world. Sailing Magazine described the Islander 36 as "well balanced under sail, stiff and surprisingly fast." There is a big owners association and website. This is a great boat I use to go to Catalina Island in year around. I have endlessly gone through this boat an have redone many of the systems. USCG Documented Vessel - All fees up to date (NO DMV!)If your looking for a great boat that is easy to handle, this is your boat. Watch the videos…Me and my girlfriend can sail this in all weather, single handed is no problem either, just watch out for the Great Whites…they get hungry! So much to list I can't remember it all! There is a survey available that was completed before I bought the boat a little over two years ago. Please ask questions. Here are some Video Links:youtu.be/XxDRhoCOAg8youtu.be/Mkg_nQ-uUvgyoutu.be/n_4v6sx1aUEyoutu.be/_FMT3ejzAHo All the electrical has been completely fixed. I used a IBEW low voltage electrician to all the electrical work. New wire throughout the boat. It has four deep cycle marine batteries that are about 1 year old now. The cabin lighting has been changed to LED and the spreader lights are also LED. This was a lot of money to upgrade. There is a VHF Marine radio installed and a HF Marine Radio that needs an antenna(was researching a way to use the rear stay as an antenna (Just haven't figured it out). There is a Sony stereo connected to four Bose 151 speakers inside. Two outdoor Bose speakers are connected to a external amplifier that gives out plenty of sound to have a fun time. 20 inch Flat screen installed on swing mount. There is a 6 gallon Raritan water heater that connects to the Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel and can also be used on 120V shore power that heats up nicely in a short time. There is an electric head less than 3 months old that dumps into a holding tank (Avalon Harbor Rules). This system works great and can also be dumped while underway. Front "V" birth padding was redone last year and is still virtually new. This boat has a gas stove and oven that both work perfectly that are connected to two 3 gallon propane tanks with all electric shut off controls. In the last year of cooking for many trips I have only used 3 gallons! The holding tank is 10 gallons. The water tanks combined are about 50 - (Never was able to measure them) The diesel tank holds 11 gallons. Foot pump for using the ocean water to rinse items in the sink. Shower in the head with hot water plumbed. The engine is a '88 Yanmar 3GM30 diesel. Well maintained, starts every time with no issues at all! The boat has a Maxwell windlass, 33 lb Bruce anchor, mast-mounted spinnaker pole, Harken Roller Furling Wheel steering and (auto pilot)Autohelm 4000. Any questions please let me know…

The boat is well equipped for long distance cruising.  She has had good care over the years and shows as a much younger boat. You must see this great Islander 36 and sail it home.

1972 Islander 36

  • Description

Seller's Description

Boat is part way through a refit. Has a new never used genoa. Anchor winch and compass have been rebuilt. Engine and transmission have less than 50 hours. Boat has wheel steering propane stove with oven and an ice box. Too many small things have been done to list and too many small things are still to be done. The boat needs more labor than cash to complete. Call me I will give you a more complete description. Boat has 7 galvanized boat stands by Scaffoldmart similar to Brownells but better. Boat has been stored under cover for the last 12 years. The keel has been removed and bolts replaced as needed, the work was done by the guy who cast the keel originally.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

With nearly 800 boats built this was one of the most successful models from Islander Yachts. During it’’s production history the ISLANDER 36 was delivered with the following engines (in a an approximate cronological order):

Universal Atomic 4 -Gas Palmer P-60 - Gas Perkins 4-108 - Diesel Westerbeke L-25 - Diesel Pathfinder - Diesel Yanmar - Diesel

It is said that the molds for the ISLANDER 36 were purchased by Newport Offshore Yachts of CA, USA in 1986. But it is not known if any other boats were built after this date.
