Description.

The Bruce Farr office designed this 40 to fill the gap between the Mumm 30 and the Corel 45. The D/L is 110 and the ballast-to-displacement ratio is 47 percent. Draft is 8 feet 6 inches; note the size of the bulb on the fin. With super high-tech construction techniques and this amount of ballast, you can imagine how low the overall vertical center of gravity of the entire boat is. You can figure that your typical, generic American cruiser-racer has a VCG at or near the DWL. The Farr 40 probably has a VCG about 12 inches below the DWL. This translates to lots of sail carrying power. That’s what it’s all about, i.e. horsepower per pound in a manageable package.

Construction of the 40 includes epoxy, E-glass, foam composite and wet pre-preg fabrics. The entire hull and deck are post-cured in an oven. The keel is a steel fin with a lead bulb coated in epoxy. There is a Yanmar 30-horsepower diesel with a saildrive unit. Note that the engine is turned 180 degrees, putting the prop immediately aft of the keel…

…The mast is carbon fiber with double, swept spreaders. The spreaders are swept to an angle of 20 degrees, measured at the chainplates. Note that the chainplates are almost at the rail, indicating that the jibs will sheet inside of the shrouds…

On deck this boat is laid out with the knowledge that Farr has gained through the past 10 years of almost total domination of offshore racing events. Crew weight is pushed forward out of the stern. Most cruisers would be amazed at just how easy it is to sail a boat like this.

I’m sure this will be a wonderful boat. Barry Carroll’s crew is as good as any and produces boats with wonderful finish detailing. The Farr 40 should be able to win in any fleet…

2011 Beneteau First 40 40' Beneteau First 40 (2011) Stylish and fast, this latest racer-cruiser has already won the Sydney-Hobart Race. BUILDERS COMMENTS: Designed by Bruce Farr, the Beneteau First 40 does an admirable job of blending a truly fast hull with a very stylish interior. The interior has been designed by Nauta Design and is finished in an Alpi blond oak which certainly adds a touch a class and comfort throughout the vessel. The First 40 is built somewhat conservatively with a solid hull and cored deck and accessible areas on deck covered in "picot" type non-slip surface. The galley is immediately to port when you come below. Its well thought out, with stainless steel sink facing forward, a good sized icebox/fridge and a two-burner stove with oven/ grill. The wraparound navigation station is opposite the galley and is the best feature of the interior. It includes a chart table and a desk, perfect for a computer, and plenty of room for radios and repeaters. The saloon includes settees port and starboard with storage above.  BROKERS COMMENTS: "Sunsail 4002" continues the tradition of the First 40.7 and is a thoroughbred amongst racer/cruisers. The interior layout is modern and comfortable and yet the First 40 has had highly impressive racing results, showing a winning combination of style and performance. The Beneteau First 40 is a proven winner already. Below the forward cabin offers a V-berth, a dressing chair and a small hanging locker. The head is to starboard and is surprisingly spacious.There are two equal double cabins aft and the saloon has one single berth to port and one starboard. A center-line table opens up to allow seating for most of the crew. The Beneteau First 40 appeals on many levels to be sure, but what will assure the success of the First 40 is the fact that it lives up to its name. 2007 Beneteau 10R FIRST The bowsprit, mounted on the starboard side of the bow, which makes the 10R the first sprit boat Beneteau has offered to its North American market. The 10R is also the first model built using the company's proprietary "One Shot" infusion process, in which the hull and structure are molded at the same time, achieving an even distribution of the resin throughout the entire boat. The hull and deck are balsa cored, except below the waterline, and under deck fittings, where solid glass is used, which makes for a light hull for a boat the 10R's size, around 9,800 pounds.Farr Yacht Design, a partner with Beneteau for many years, designed a smart interior for the 10R. By placing the head on centerline in the forepeak, they've created one of the best spinnaker-retrieval and launching spaces found on any production boat today. The large, half-moon hatch provides good ventilation dockside, and a more than adequate opening for spinnaker work. The head's sole is covered with molded nonskid and has a drain in the center to drain away water from wet spinnakers. The carbon spinnaker pole retracts into a fiberglass sheath in the head two rubber gaskets prevent water intrusion. Any water that does manage to sneak in drains via a weep hole and clear rubber tube led to the bilge. Aft of the head/spinnaker operations center is a bulkhead that's tabbed into the hull, as is the bulkhead aft of both settees, which supports the load from the shrouds and keel. Aft of the bulkhead on port and starboard are two straight settees (curved settees are great for dinner parties, but make lousy offshore berths), which flank a drop-leaf table. The portside, L-shaped galley is across from the nav station, and since both are at max beam, they're both roomy. In fact, the nav station, which faces forward, is roomier than some larger boats we've sailed. Aft to starboard is the owner's stateroom with a double bunk, to port a single. Thanks to the head-forward layout, both aft berths are further forward than they might otherwise be, which keeps weight out of the stern.Racers who've spend time racing aboard the 10R First love the cockpit, which has plenty of room for helmsman, main trimmer, two headsail trimmers, and a pitman. Immediately forward of the open transom is a large hatch, which accesses a storage area that accepts an optional liner designed to hold a small liferaft. The large, 63-inch aluminum wheel is covered with leather, and with only three-quarters of a turn lock-to-lock, is designed to provide the same precise, fingertip control as a tiller. The Harken mainsheet traveler is immediately forward of the wheel, and thanks to the low cockpit coamings, is an extremely comfortable area for the mainsheet trimmer, especially when the boat is heeled. Fine and gross-trim backstay controls are well within the trimmer's reach on either tack. Bruce Farr calls his latest vision a “refined one design,” a boat that sheds compromise in order to focus on the job at hand. And the tasks he’s referring to include dramatic upwind sailing and quick-to-plane off the wind action. From a design point of view, there’s a threefold amalgam in play: a low-drag hull shape with a lean flattened canoe body that’s more surfboard than sailboat; foils that are tuned to excellent performance on all points of sail; and a rig, sail plan and deck layout that takes lessons learned from the GP 42 and the TP 52 and parlays them into an even more ergonomic design. Corbeau is an excellent example of the Farr 400 one design, she has been heavily upgraded last year and is ready for the 2024 sailing season.

This boat was built by Premier Composites and originally owned by Farr. It was raced in various international markets for a couple years and on best belief, went into storage for several years. The boat was then refurbished including addition of the modified bow, new Awlgrip, and new cockpit resurfacing. The boat then went to Lake Champlain for a year and then went into storage again for 3 years. The current owner has used the boat for part of one season with great success on the race course.

The mast is stored inside, and together with the cargo trailer are in Osterville, MA. The boat is on her trailer and can be seen by appointment in Portsmouth, Rhode Island

Design The asymmetric deck layout follows modern Grand Prix race boat practice, for high efficiency and fast maneuvers.  A primary grinder pedestal system allows for high speed spinnaker gybes, sail hoists, and string line spinnaker drops. These efficiencies combined with the high stability hull form and ballast package allow the boat to be raced successfully with an intended crew of 8. With the primary carbon winches at the center of the Farr 400 it allows the crew to be successful in a large format style of racing. The open layout of the cockpit deck along with the proven winch spacing make this Farr 400 ready for to go up against any race boat in its class. The boat can be easily and inexpensively transported, clearly differentiating this class from others, promoting bigger fleet sizes and lower operating costs. The keel and rudder can be quickly removed. The overall beam and length are constrained to allow the hull to be tilted to fit within the dimensions of a 40 foot flat rack container for shipping, whether directly on the flat rack or on its own dedicated trailer on the flat rack. The boat can be transported on the road without exceeding driving restrictions in most regions, on its own dedicated trailer or with the flat rack on a truck or trailer.  The carbon mast separates into two sections and all components fit completely within the transport system footprint.

Construction

The Farr 400 is completly built in carbon fiber/epoxy sandwich contruction, making this one of the first designers to have brought this contruction to market in a poduction boat. All major components of the hull, deck, and structures are fabricated in carbor epoxy with vacuum infusion technology. All the major production pieces were created using 5-axis technology. Weight is controlled completely throughout the entire build process.

The FARR ® 40 One Design was conceived as a high performance 40 footer that would gather the benefits of modern materials into an economic platform for short course racing that was demanding, exciting and not beyond the capabilities of relatively inexperienced and mature crew members. The boat also had to be capable of competing in the offshore classes and be a competitive IMS performer to give the purchaser a wide range of events in which to compete and to carry through times before class fleets were established. The design of the boat and the formation of Class Rules and Constitution proceeded in parallel allowing input from the operator and builder side of the equation. The Owner/Driver class rule was an influencing factor in the conceptual phase of the design, encouraging us towards easy to tune, simple arrangements that would not take time and energy from the primary activity of sailboat racing.

We arrived at the basic parameters from a study of our very successful Farr 39ML (d esign № 336) and our other designs of this size more focused towards IMS design optimization. The Farr 40 One Design has similar beam and displacement for its length compared to Design 336, but has higher stability and sail carrying ability. The lightly raked stem and limited aft overhang give the hull a long waterline length, which combined with a clean run aft and fine forward sections, give the boat a good balance of upwind and downwind performance. A low center of gravity keel with lead bulb and cast iron fin bolted to an aluminum interior frame provides a stiff and robust structure for those who insist on going aground.

Interior layout was kept clean and simple while still providing the basic elements for long distance work. A full private head forward, saloon with galley and centrally located navigation station aft make the boat ocean racing ready. The cabin was sized in excess of minimum IMS requirements to give the boat a spacious feeling for those who would choose to do limited cruising and to provide a reasonable area for after race gatherings.

Our very successful MUMM 30 class has proven that spar design and building technology now permits the relatively economic and reliable manufacture of carbon runnerless rigs, and that when properly designed and tuned, the short footed headsails and large mainsail can be a very competitive and easily managed sail plan. This style of rig was in line with a desire in the market place for an arrangement that would not punish poor crew work with expensive mast repairs and became an obvious choice. A two swept spreader rig carbon mast with fractional chutes flying from a fairly high "I" point give the boat plenty of downwind speed. A masthead spinnaker option is available for those who desire more downwind thrills in open and PHRF events.

A large cockpit provides the crew with ample space for basic operations, and the arrangement can handle both wheel and tiller installation. Jib inhauler controls lead back to the cockpit to give the jib trimmer complete control on his sheeting options. Masthead backstay adjustment is through a direct hydraulic system with controls within easy reach of the mainsheet position.

Construction is detailed in foam core with glass-reinforced skins. Rudder has a carbon stock and shell.  Internal moldings combine with bulkheads and composite frames to provide a sturdy and serviceable interior. Prototype work enabled the builder and the designer to control weights and develop a strict one design set of limits and tolerances based on lessons from the MUMM 36 , COREL 45 and MUMM 30 one design rules.

The market has responded positively to the FARR 40 One Design with fleets being established, close racing enjoyed, and favorable results in competitive IMS regattas.

The actress shocked her fans when she debuted an ear-length bob in a clip posted to Instagram on Saturday.

She shared a before and after, showing herself tugging on her long locks as she rocked an oversized T-shirt while sitting on a dressing room chair.

Biel, 42, then revealed her fresh cut, as she also changed into a chic look, consisting of a gray blazer, white shirt and gold chained necklace.

“Brought back the f–k ass Bob 💇🏻‍♀️,” she captioned the video.

The mom of two seemingly left her husband, Justin Timberlake, speechless as he simply commented, “🔥😍🔥😍🔥.”

Meanwhile, some of Biel’s followers were convinced her new look was inspired by her “7th Heaven” character Mary Camden’s short haircut .

“Oh I remember when Mary Camden had this cut 🙌🙌🙌,” one fan commented.

The iconic TV series aired from 1996 to 2007.

Others gushed over Biel’s new look, with one writing she “knows how to bring sexy back.”

“You‘re a beauty – love your new hair and your old – you look great,” another added.

Biel also took to her Story to share the aftermath of her cut as she showed loads of hair on the bathroom floor.

The “Next” star seemingly waited to undergo this major transformation until after the 2024 Met Gala on May 6.

She walked the red carpet wearing a plunging V-neckline pink dress with feathers and styled her hair down with light waves.

Biel admitted she bathed in 20 pounds of Epsom salt to help slip into the Tamara Ralph Couture gown and relax after her plane ride to New York City.

“It’s amazing,” she said during an appearance on “The View” on May 16. “It gives you magnesium inside your body. I slept really well, I woke up, I felt really good, I felt calm. It’s kind of an adrenaline, kind of night. It’s a lot of exciting people.”

Timberlake, 43, didn’t join his wife at the A-list event as he’s been keeping busy on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour .
