Material moodboard palette for Superyacht interior design by Suvorov Yacht Design

At the very origin of creative process everything commences with a wellspring of inspiration. For instance, the luxurious feel of a cashmere silk carpet, the captivating pattern of figured rosewood, and the opulence of gilded accents in Arabescato Vagli marble. Therefore the catalyst for the design journey lies in the meticulously curated moodboard selection, wherein a rich tapestry of hues and finishes is woven to recall memories and sensations. It is in soul of the onboard experience at the yacht, starting the ideas for all design choices and inspiring creativity.

During iterative, by it’s nature, stage the general arrangement (GA) is refined to the clients brief. Most importantly, GA optimizes the use of space on production, semi-custom or custom yacht, ensuring that every area is efficiently designed to enhance comfort and convenience onboard. In other words, great interior layout ensures flawless crew operation for the ultimate guest experience, allowing the space for customizations and ensuring that the yacht is a personalized reflection of owner’s style.

A crucial stage that brings energy to the project, transforming an idea into a tangible form. In addition to leveraging design skills and expertise of interior designer, a first sketch outlines the yacht’s interior, giving the client first glimpse into its aesthetic essence. It helps both: to understand space proportions and determine how furniture and interior parts are arranged. It is undoubtedly dynamic and forward-thinking stage, as it eagerly looks forward to the final result.

Here is where yacht begins to acquire her unique character. Eventually it brings together of elements like texture, finishes, reflection, and shadow, resulting in the vivid visualization of space, accurately capturing the interior. The design takes shape following through the process of moving from basic sketches to complete digital visuals. Thus a detailed image shows how all the pieces of the interior design interact, including things like placing the seating in dining areas to create spaces that feel both open and private, or making sure the bedroom flows smoothly into the bathroom creating beautiful ambiance. At the end, all these different elements come together to create a bespoke experience onboard.

Without reservation, at the heart of bringing to the life the envisioned yacht’s interior and perfect execution lies the package of documentation. From General Arrangement layouts to the set of drawings for the intricate details of custom furniture and bespoke lighting with unrivalled attention to detail, summing up the full documentation is assembled for the shipyard.

"Great things are not done by impulse, but a series of small things brought together." ~ Vincent Van Gogh

Destry darr design's approach.

Creating a lasting impact is important in the overall design of a yacht, but effective space planning is key to success. Destry Darr Designs incorporates freehand rendering, computerized photo-realistic rendering and AutoCAD drafting to create design concepts, floor, ceiling and lighting plans and detailed drawings of custom designed cabinetry and furnishings to ensure that the end result is not only pleasing to the eye but also functional.

At Destry Darr Designs, we incorporate a unique blend of beautiful woodwork, accent finishes, dramatic lighting, contemporary furnishings and features, and seamlessly infuse unique components such as soft decor, window treatments, art and accessories for each individual client project that compliments the interior theme.

The end result is both harmonious and comfortable. This combination of different finishes and textures work together to create an exquisite space that is both luxurious and functional.

TRANSFORMING VISIONS

We take the time to listen to our clients and transform their visions into successful design solutions.

Working closely with yacht builders, interior contractors and suppliers, all aspects of the interior installation are fully coordinated and supervised. The end result is always a look that satisfies the client’s vision while respecting function and optimizing their budget.

7 Trends in Sailing Yacht Interior Design

There’s some irony when it comes to looking at the hottest interior design trends for custom sailing yachts: much of the inspiration for today’s designs draw from the past – combined with modern innovation.

Interior designs that emphasize simplicity, balance, and natural materials are hardly revolutionary.  Quite the opposite.  But there is a new take and balance between old and new, iconic and innovative, that seems to provide the perfect balance for creating incredible interior spaces.

We’re exploring the top 7 trends in custom yacht design for 2023.

Natural Light and Connection Between Interior and Exterior Spaces

The use of larger windows is a trend that has been gaining popularity in yacht design in recent years, as yacht owners increasingly want to maximize their views of the surrounding environment and bring more natural light into their living spaces.

One way that yacht designers are incorporating larger windows is by using high-strength glass materials that can withstand the harsh marine environment. For example, tempered glass or laminated glass with multiple layers can provide the necessary strength and durability to withstand the wind, waves, and impact from flying debris.

In addition to using strong glass materials, yacht designers are also using innovative engineering techniques to maximize the size and placement of windows. Lightweight structural materials such as carbon fiber and titanium in the yacht’s construction, allow for larger windows without compromising the yacht’s structural integrity. In the photo of ANNA, above, the white-painted transverse structural knees are part of a carbon fabrication that strengthens the cabin and carries the mainsheet loads while blending into the classic joinery.

M ulti Functionality and Flex Spaces

custom yacht interior design

The design for 68-ft CIRRUS comes from blending 40’s & 50’s era style. The large saloon is designed to provide long-term comfort and versatility with innovative vertical storage and a vaulted ceiling that includes panoramic angled glass as well as overhead skylights. Design by Stephens Waring under construction at Jim Betts Enterprises.

Owners are spending more time aboard their vessels and are adding to the list demands and programmatic needs. These include home-office, fitness centers, gourmet kitchens, and gathering places for family and friends to spend longer durations of time together.

Because space is at a premium on a yacht, designers are creating multi-functional spaces that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a seating area that can be converted into a bed or a dining table that can be lowered to create additional seating. Clever storage solutions are also being incorporated into yacht design to make the most of available space.

Old World Charm Meets Modern Sensibilities: Spirit of Tradition

custom yacht interior design

44-ft ITALMUS blends a 1940’s vernacular into the stylistic details and overall aesthetic of the yacht. The interior styling and design is aimed to mirror the era with a theme of highly crafted raised paneling and elegant joinery detail of select quarter sawn mahogany and finished in satin varnis.  Design by Stephens Waring, built by Van Dam Classic Boats. Yacht designers have always had a particular reverence for heritage and history.  The notion of heading out to sea conjures images of bygone eras past.  Capturing that essence requires a balance that avoids becoming kitsch or contrived.  While mid-century design may be considered the hot design trend of 2023, as designers steeped in a Spirit of Tradition design philosophy, we feel we’ve never left the genre.

Spirit of Tradition designs embody some historically identifiable link, particularly expressed in the shape and aesthetic exhibited in the design form of the hull and superstructure. Equally important, a Spirit of Tradition vessel must embrace modern development in materials, construction methods, mechanical systems and naval architecture science. Without the Spirit in development, we’re left with only Tradition.

Natural Materials

Douglas fir deck beams, traditional raised and v-groove paneling, bright varnish and white painted surfaces make it a light, airy enclave.  Interior design by Martha Coolidge and Stephens Waring Design.  Boat construction by Lyman-Morse.  Photo credit: Alison Langley

Yacht owners by their very nature are drawn to water and the natural world, so it makes sense to incorporate natural elements such as wood, stone, and other organic materials in design. These materials create a sense of warmth and connect the interior spaces to the natural surroundings.

As experts in wooden boat design, we have long touted the benefits of timber for structural elements.  However, incorporation of hardwoods, as well as a growing trend in sustainable timbers, have become increasingly popular with owners looking to achieve aesthetic, durability, and sustainability objectives in interior design.

Other natural materials such as leather and wool are also being incorporated to add texture and comfort. These finishes not only look beautiful, but they are also durable to withstand the harsh marine environment.

Renovation and Restomods

custom yacht interior design

The owner of Marilee (built in 1926) had the bold vision to create an interior that reflected the yacht’s century-long provenance while creating an open space below.  The team worked with Paul Waring of Stephens Waring Yacht Design, to create a traditional and properly constructed interior with an updated layout for relaxed, modern day use. Photo credit: Alison Langley

The popularity of restomods has been well established in the world of classic cars, but it has only recently grown in popularity in the world of yachting. Fortunately, this is changing with plenty of success stories to point to.  Restomods are ideal for owners looking for cost-effective transformations that maintain sentimental connections to vessels and deliver stunning customized spaces that can be more cost effective than new custom builds. They are also popular with owners who inherit family boats, but need more utility and comfort for future generations.

Historical interiors often lack the ergonomics and amenities most owners seek today.  Good restoration projects embrace as much of the original charm and character of the original design as possible while improving comfort and livability.  Upgrades to electrical systems, electronics and navigation, plumbing and propulsion systems are low hanging fruit.  The interior design aesthetics requires a careful and complementary approach which honors the original character while updating comfort, utility, and aesthetics.

Flexible Spaces for a Crew Cabin

custom yacht interior design

65-ft ANNA’s design includes a unique pocket door system.  The design provides an easy way to expand square footage when the cabin  is not needed or to private a comfortable extra cabin or crew quarters when extra hands or guests are aboard. Design by Stephens Waring. Construction by Lyman Morse Photo credit: Alison Langley

Owners often struggle with the balance between the desire for a larger vessel with larger interior spaces and the challenge of maintaining a total vessel size (and cost) which is manageable.

As we get older the idea of managing and skippering our own vessel can come at the expense of enjoyment.  Hiring crew alleviates some of the operational challenges and burdens, but it also means sharing interior space with others.

Flexible crew cabins provide a cost effective way to optimize space for when crew is and isn’t aboard. One solution is the installation of pocket doors on sleeping quarters. This converts square footage from private berths (crew quarters) to main salon gathering space when doors are opened and transforms the space to private rooms for guests and crew when needed.

Smart technology

custom yacht interior design

Yacht owners are increasingly interested in incorporating smart technology into their vessels. This includes lighting, climate control, entertainment systems, and security features that can be controlled remotely. Smart technology allows yacht owners to control the environment on board and manage energy consumption more efficiently. It also adds an extra layer of security by allowing the owner to monitor their yacht from afar.

Inside track: The yacht interior design brands to know this season

Suzanne lovell.

A degree in architecture and a passion for fine art were the foundations of Chicago-based Suzanne Lovell Inc, which comprises a 20-strong team, and has been listed in Architectural Digest’s top-100 interior designers and architects. For more than 30 years, the company has built up an impressive portfolio of luxury residential projects, from superyachts to sprawling penthouses, Manhattan pied-à-terres and whimsical California beach houses.

Using a client’s personal taste as a launch pad, each project is undertaken via what Lovell calls the “Three-Dimensional Experience” — an all-round approach encompassing architecture, interior design and fine art, with an understanding that this trio are integral to the process. It’s an approach that echoes the practices of Ferrari and his contemporaries Charles and Ray Eames, Alvar Aalto and Giò Ponti . These giants of design were creative polymaths, often experimenting with art, furniture design, textiles, ceramics and glassware.

Craft is undeniably at the heart of Lovell’s hugely successful business. By collaborating with an array of niche design talent from her extensive network she ensures each finished project is a unique masterpiece. Art also takes a central role, with antiques and auction-sourcing an integral part of the process. “Sir John Soane inspired the creation of what he referred to as the ‘poetry of architecture’, where art can happen,” Lovell explains of her inspiration. “His words are telling: ‘Think and feel as a poet, combine and embellish as a painter and execute as a sculptor’. I believe this is what we do every day at Suzanne Lovell Inc.”

Bottega Veneta

Italian style is no stranger to flamboyance so Bottega Veneta’s subtle and discreet Home Collection is perfect for the superyacht owner who prefers a more muted colour palette. Founded in Vicenza in 1966, Bottega Veneta began producing luxury leather goods in the master craftsman tradition. That approach, rather than trend-driven fashion, has remained the cornerstone of the brand.

In 2006, the year it opened a school dedicated to training the next generation of leather artisans, the company launched its Home Collection. Creative director Tomas Maier started it all in 2001, when he began commissioning bespoke furnishings for select retail stores. The pieces soon attracted the attention of discerning clients but, rather than selling them (as was often requested), Maier promised to make the customers their own versions instead.

Ten years later the Home Collection is now an integral part of Bottega Veneta. It favours modern, functional pieces that bear the trademark intrecciato leather braiding motif. Each item is elegant enough to work as a standalone accessory or as part of a set, and the look suits an onboard setting just as well as one on dry land.

As part of luxury Italian linen house Pratesi’s ambitious five-year plan towards international expansion, it has launched a new range specifically for yachts. The collection of sumptuous bedding, table linens and towels is made to order, with customisation options including bespoke monogramming available.

Run by the fourth generation of the Pratesi family, the house is focused on delivering faultless craftsmanship, drawing on the skill of its team of designers, weavers and embroiderers, who create the linen in its Florence headquarters. COO and future CEO Simone Bocchio and president Federica Pratesi bring a personal insight into the yachting industry to the production of timeless, elegant linens.

Richard Ginori 1735

Italians can turn everyday objects into works of art and this is certainly true of the exquisite porcelain from Richard Ginori 1735. Delicate, hand-decorated patterns and illustrations of 19th century botany and rare birds adorn its charming collections, which will turn any on-board dining experience into an event to be remembered.

The distinguished porcelain company was founded nearly 300 years ago in the foothills of Monte Morello near Florence. Over the course of its illustrious history, it has collaborated with leading Italian architects and designers including Gio Ponti and was recently acquired by Gucci.

Summit Furniture

As one might guess from a furniture company with a name that evokes adventure, Summit’s speciality is extremely high-quality furniture specifically made for the outdoors. Crafted in sustainable, plantation-grown teak, which is water-resistant and strong, its chairs, tables and loungers are as ideal for the deck of a superyacht as for a domestic garden.

The Californian firm collaborates with leading designers like Linley, with which it created a clean-lined, curved collection (lounge chair, above, €5,487), inspired by the interiors of the top classic yachts . It is made to be stacked or stowed — perfect for sailing purposes.

FM Architettura d’Interni

“All projects start as dreams in the mind of an owner.” This is the philosophy of the Italian company that has designed the interiors of some of the world’s finest superyachts and most luxurious hotel suites and palatial private homes. FM Architettura d’Interni was founded by the architect Francesca Muzio and the interior designer Maria Silvia Orlandini in 2009, and in a few short years, has amassed an incredibly impressive portfolio of clients in all corners of the world.

The company made its name by creating yacht interiors that are effortlessly elegant, yet at the same time have an inviting, natural feel. As its reputation grew, it was commissioned for high-profile interior design projects such as the luxurious Presidential Suite of Shangri-La at The Shard, London - along with other Shangri-La properties in China and the Philippines — as well as premium residential properties stretching from Bahrain to Beverly Hills.

Despite the long list of people lining up to benefit from their expertise, Muzio and Orlandini never forget the views of the most important person in any project: the owner. Whether the commission is for a yacht or a penthouse, the pair consult at length with the client so his or her “uniquely personal wishes” can be fully reflected in the interior that FM Architettura d’Interni will go on to create.

Armani/Casa

Designer Giorgio Armani will shortly open a four-storey Armani/Casa flagship boutique in Milan — the new home of his interiors collection, which launched in 2000. This season, as previously, he has once more looked to the natural world for inspiration. As well as the 50-piece numbered and signed limited-edition bar cabinet, “Club”, which features on its doors a hand-lacquered ocean motif inspired by Japanese artist Hokusai’s The Great Wave , there is a screen featuring a Japanese-style landscape print. The same image adorns an upholstered chaise longue, and there are blankets decorated with images of lions and leopards, leopard stone marquetry, and a crystal-encrusted flower to elevate a table setting.

“All my designs for the home collection are intended to promote an atmosphere of calm relaxation,” says Armani. “One way to do this is to reference Mother Nature, as the natural world is nurturing and beautiful.” Those who enjoy life at sea will certainly appreciate that sentiment.

Tai Ping has been making and supplying one-of-a-kind carpets to discerning clients all over the world for 50 years. Its first-ever commission, from the Grauman’s Theatre in Los Angeles, was for a carpet so large it needed to be constructed in a tent erected outside the factory. Today, the Hong Kong-headquartered company has five distinct divisions and showrooms across Europe, North America and Asia.

New for 2016 is a collaboration with award-winning florist Jeff Leatham. The artistic director at Paris’s Four Seasons Hotel Georges V, Leatham is famed for creating stunning floral installations and bouquets for everyone from the Dalai Lama to Oprah Winfrey.

The Bloom collection comprises 14 handmade wool-and-silk rugs that were inspired by geometric shapes and the organic forms of solid, liquid and vapour. Each of the custom-made designs explodes with colour, with even Leatham admitting to feeling “chills” when he saw them realised for the first time.

Stefano Ricci

Stefano Ricci’s Luxury Yacht Division designs bespoke interiors for some of the most sophisticated vessels in the world. Catering to an elite clientele, its projects are characterised by an elegant finish and sumptuous details, and include the likes of glazed cabinets, handwoven textiles and intricate ornaments with calligraphic patterns. Ricci’s furniture is traditional and ornate, and it’s not immediately obvious that it has been developed for a yacht environment. A recent collaboration with Florence-based designer Luca Dini saw the interior of a mammoth 70 metre superyacht refitted to an almost palatial standard. Utilising the best materials, as is the company’s signature, the interior was furnished in Californian briarwood and Tuscan marble.

Its renowned Home line is similarly plush, represents the finest Italian craftsmanship and has a 100 per cent Made in Italy brief. Nowhere is this clearer than in its recently updated porcelain lines, which blur the boundaries between art and utility. The Lapis Lazuli line gives a contemporary twist to porcelain, featuring deep blue hues and playing up the opulence historically associated with blue by coupling it with 24ct gold detailing.

Pitt-Pollaro

Back in 2012, when Frank Pollaro was commissioned to create a desk for Brad Pitt’s château in the South of France, little did he know a new partnership was about to be forged. On delivering the piece, he noticed the actor’s sketchbook was full of furniture sketches and suggested they make them a reality.

The Pitt-Pollaro Collection is designed by Pitt and crafted by Pollaro. It demonstrates the attention to detail the likes of Robert De Niro have sought out and majors in art deco-inspired pieces in opulent materials, such as the decadent Statuario Venato marble Toi et Moi bath (above, in a limited edition of three), which can accommodate two well-heeled people. Should you require further credentials, Pollaro has designed yacht furniture for tech giant Larry Ellison, and Pitt-Pollaro was one to the top luxury and interiors brands at the Monaco Yacht Show .

Yacht Interiors – Marine Grade and Movement Friendly

Principal Designer, Joseph W McCarter, will always keep in mind that yacht interior design materials must be resistant to moisture and marine grade.

This is an important factor in every yacht design we accomplish and can be a fun challenge to find unique materials that are still useful in a sailboat or yacht when exposed to ocean elements. Using rounded edges on tables and corners also help save people from bumps and bruises during a rough journey with functional boat interior design.

Interior design: the art of detail

Meticulous in our approach and sophisticated in our creativity with an unwavering eye for detail, Vripack addresses every interior yacht design project with an owner’s sense of pride and personalisation. Each phase is an exploration of discovery, moving from inspiration to realisation to final custom design. From the moment you select Vripack to design your yacht interior, the inventive adventure begins.

It all starts from a source of inspiration. The texture of a pure wool carpet. The dramatic striped grain of macassar ebony. The warmth of gold running through Calacatta Oro marble. A mood board is the opener, drawing on colours and finishes, evoking memories and feelings. It’s the essence of a yacht’s onboard ambience, from where all design roads spark creativity.

HAND-DRAWN SKETCH

Next comes the hand-drawn sketch, which brings life to the page. It translates a vision from mind to paper and is fluid and evolving in its anticipation of the space. By drawing upon the draughtsman’s skill and design experience, a sketch sets the interior direction, gifting the client a first glimpse at the look and feel of their yacht.

INTERIOR DETAILING

Here is where an interior begins to take on an identity. The art of design is in the detail, first imagined by hand, then defined in a rendering. It incorporates texture, finishes, reflection and shadow. It’s the realistic imagining of an interior space, portraying angles and curves in measured accuracy. Transitioned from rough sketch to detailed computer rendering, the design gradually comes to life.

Vripack Design - Detail sketching of the furniture - 3D sketches

Moving through the stages, from theory to practice, the mock-up is authentication of the design. What begins with drawings and sample selections soon becomes a physical creation. It’s the client’s opportunity to understand and validate the quality of craftsmanship and finishes. Where final materials are selected, and specifics are confirmed.

CUSTOM FURNITURE

A knurled brass door handle to match your favourite bag. A personalised shade of turquoise linen to reflect your love of the sea. From the style of stitch in a leather trim to the height and slant of the master suite headboard, every piece of furniture, both large and small, is customised to a client’s individual preference. The attention to detail is unrivalled. The sense of creativity wholly bespoke.

Custom furniture - Creative Design - Vripack - Bespoke furniture

CUSTOM LIGHTING

At the heart of a yacht interior is sophisticated ambient lighting. From the diffused lighting of a deep sunken spotlight to concealed lighting on window mullions to a dramatic bespoke chandelier in the aft salon. How a space is illuminated sets the tone, transitioning from warm morning hues through to a refined sundown setting.

FULL VISUAL

The big reveal. The moment of truth. A full visual rendering pulls all the details together, framing an interior in its entirety. The seating arrangement juxtaposed with the dining area, offering space and privacy. The flow of movement between bedroom and en suite, encouraging restful living. The reflection of a backlit onyx bar captured in the surface of a bespoke coffee table. It’s all presented as one in the final renderings.

VR WALK -THROUGH

The use of virtual reality – something that Vripack pioneered – is integral to yacht design. Look up, look down, rotate 360-degrees all around. It includes space planning, sight lines and the entire ergonomic layout. Virtual reality enables the fine-tuning of a turnkey design solution, revolutionising the flexibility of an interior project early on. Just as significant is the freedom it gifts a client to experience and approve all elements of the design without even leaving their home.

custom yacht interior design

FLY-THROUGH VIDEOS

A sketch or computer rendering gives a flavour of the finished interior, but a fly-though video portrays a comprehensive design vision. The way each element relates to one another. The dynamism of the space. A fly-through provides an immersive and holistic representation, inside and out, with views from above giving a sense of the whole yacht, including how outdoor spaces relate to the interior design within.

Timeless Interiors

Posted August 10, 2020

We pride ourselves on the fact that our Bayliss custom yacht interiors are some of the most striking in the industry. It is important that the quality of the materials and the functionality and execution of the design ultimately shine through.

custom yacht interior design

Although the appearance of a custom Bayliss yacht interior looks clean and simple, the smallest details set it apart, from pullman bunks to actuated parts, to veneer placement on the drawer faces. Bayliss Interior Carpentry Supervisor, Bill Crum signs off on everything before it makes the cut.

“Some of the details we’re known for are our margins, grain matching, and veneer matching- inside and outside of every cabinet,” says Crum. “I think this attention to detail definitely contributes to the timeless appearance our boats are known for.”

ATTENTION TO DETAIL:

Approximately 8,000 to 16,000 interior carpentry man-hours go into each build, depending on the design. When asked about the installations he’s most proud of, Crum lists off a few. “On Singularis [now Reel Wheels II ], we resawed the 26-foot companionway board out of a teak boule. For Blue View, the way we blended the spiral staircase to the crew staterooms into the hanging locker beside it. And on Blank Check , the book-matched galley floors.”

custom yacht interior design

On every interior, our Interior Carpentry crew utilizes a technique called book-matching. This is the practice of matching two wood surfaces, so that the adjoining grain surfaces mirror each other, giving the impression of an opened book. From starboard to port, the window frames, valances, and even horizontal veneers are book-matched.

“If someone is detail oriented, we’re their guy,” says Bayliss. “If we cut corners, it would stick out like a sore thumb to us.” Each Bayliss door, cabinet and drawer is a trove of the details we’re known for: our custom Bayliss dovetail joint design, grain matching and solid wood edge banding.

custom yacht interior design

Even the hardware on drawers must pass the test. “You can feel the quality under your fingertips,” says Bayliss. “It’s crisp and smooth.” Vertical integration throughout our company helps us build better interiors. For instance, the Bayliss Boatworks Metalworks department collaborates with our Interior Carpentry crew to build our own proprietary custom television-lifts, pullman bunks, and hidden door hardware in order to provide our boats with components that are functional and stand up to the punishment offshore waters can deliver.

custom yacht interior design

MATERIALS AND SELECTIONS:

Selecting wood samples seems easy enough but we do things a little differently. We begin each custom yacht interior with a conversation about the owner’s desired wood choice, quality, and color, then make a rough calculation of the log size we’ll need to complete their vision.

We use one log for the entire boat on each build in order to ensure grain consistency. No two trees are the same; there are variations in every species that yield remarkable differences that we can tailor to an owner’s requirements. Finding quality logs that are big enough to compensate for this technique can be an extensive search. Once the logs are secured, we generate samples for the owner using both clear finish and stains for their approval.

custom yacht interior design

The veneers are one important component of Bayliss custom yacht interiors, but the dimensional solid stock lumber is equally as important. We always use solid boards for all cabinet tops and bunk rails, and these pieces must match the feel of the interior quality. To reduce the weight and increase the structural stability of our cabinetry, we also use Tricel panels in the fabrication of our interior components, where possible.

Bayliss yachts are known for their excellent resale value. This wouldn’t be the case without Bayliss custom yacht interiors that stand the test of time, both in durability and aesthetics.

“When you choose teak for your interior wood choice, you never have to apologize for it. It’s an accepted standard,” says Bayliss. “However, recently there has been a lot of interest in walnut as an interior wood choice.”

Walnut is also very high quality and offers a lot of possibilities similar to teak. Both teak and walnut, when coupled with high quality workmanship and a flawless finish, are excellent choices.

Whatever the wood choice, to protect this living art, interior surfaces receive exterior quality finish with UV prohibitors. “We’ve chosen to utilize an exterior quality interior finish that requires 15-18 coats,” says Bayliss. “Obviously, there are less labor-intensive options out there, but this finish truly stands the test of time.”

custom yacht interior design

ADVANCEMENTS:

“We’re in a constant state of evolution,” says Bayliss. “We are always refining previous tried and true techniques, making them better.”

The CNC (i.e., Computer Numerical Control) machine has been a real game-changer. It has sped up our fabrication process by changing the way we’re capable of making cuts. The Digital Fabrication & Design Department cuts all doors, frames, small parts, and nesting items using the CNC machine.

In addition to the CNC machine, we have converted a sawmill into a resaw in order to provide more latitude when it comes to book-matching, and specialty pieces. We now do a tremendous amount of resaw work in-house.

custom yacht interior design

Each of our twelve Interior Carpentry crew members has his own strengths. During brainstorming sessions on the interior layout of a new build, ideas come from every person on the team.

The crew, led by Crum, is trusted to come up with a design concept, then collaborate with the owners and our Digital Fabrication & Design department to make it truly special.

“The creativity of those guys,” Bayliss says, shaking his head in wonder. “Their excitement in achieving the highest quality is infectious and really drives all of us.”
