Powerboat to Attempt Record Breaking Atlantic Powerboat Run
Have you ever taken a cruise to Europe? If so then you know, even at full steam it can still take up to a week to arrive at your destination port on the other side of the Atlantic. This relatively “quick” passage comes at the cost of hundreds and hundreds of gallons of fuel. These figures are in stark comparison to current Atlantic crossing record (2 days, 10 hours, and 54 minutes) held by the Aga Khan’s 220ft powerboat, Destriero in 1992. Keep in mind this craft carried no additional passengers. To businessman Richard George of Team Great Britain, this record can and will be broken. And he says his boat can do it while carrying passengers.
His team’s powerboat, which mimics the looks of both a catamaran and a jet, runs 112ft long and holds a seven-man crew. With a state-of-the-art carbon fiber design, the crew will attempt to make the crossing between Cornwall and New York in just 48 hours, averaging 65mph. Even more impressive is the fact that they plan to do it on one tank of gas.
“It will be a wave-piercing catamaran that, given the right conditions, will be able to complete the crossing in 48 hours, while using a fraction of the fuel of former competitors,” Richard said. “ The idea is not only to win the record back for Britain but to develop a boat that will go on to influence the industry in terms of efficiency.”
The $22 million project is set to come to fruition in the summer of 2018, and Mr. George has assembled a crew worthy of such an endeavor. These crew members include some of the biggest names in powerboating such as 82-year-old Dag Pike, Branson’s navigator in 1986, and Dan Stevens, the current owner of Virgin Atlantic Challenger II. Stevens sees this as a way to bring awareness to the inefficiency of powerboating as an industry.
“The boats are built for power and speed with little thought to how much emissions they pump out. “It got me thinking that there had to be a way to do something based around efficiency that gave off a positive message. “It’s always been something that interests me but to do it these days you have to have a boat that is not only fast but also very efficient.”
With a few years left to prepare, we’re excited to see what else the team can come up with in their attempt to make history!

International Certificate of Competence Motor - ICC
Do you want to rent a power driven vessel when travelling abroad? The ICC (International Certificate of Competence allows you to do just that.
The International Certificate of Competence for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) is issued through the offices of Irish Sailing on behalf of the Irish Government.
The International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft for users of pleasure craft was established under resolution No. 40 of the Working Party on Inland Water Transport for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. This means the ICC only works in countries which have accepted this resolution.
The aim of the ICC is to provide boat owners and people wishing to charter boats abroad with an internationally recognised document certifying their competence to skipper a boat for recreational use.
Please Note:
The International Certificate of Competency is not a training course, and the Direct Assessment procedure is only suitable for sailors or powerboaters who have significant previous experience and the required competencies.
For those who are less experienced or wish to learn the required skills it is recommended to undertake a training course from the Irish Sailing Cruising Scheme or National Powerboat Training Scheme . Certificates issued on successful completion of certain courses from these schemes can also be used to apply for an ICC.
Direct Assessment
The direct assessment is a fast track way to obtain the ICC if you already have experience. You can present yourself to us for a direct assessment provided you have the background knowledge in the theory and practical elements to boat handling. This should be to National Powerboat Certificate (level 2) standard and above. Think of it like a car driving test.
Approx 3-4 hours
Theory paper: 2 hours to complete
Practical: 1-2 hours duration
€199 payable to Atlantic Powerboating for a direct assessment
€121 payable to Irish Sailing for the ICC application (reduced cost of €75 if already a member of an Irish Sailing Club)
Fees correct as of January 2024. Please check the Irish Sailing website for the latest fee here

Atlantic Boating Guide
Come rejuvenate here.
I magine it. Mabel Bell and her husband, telephone inventor Alexander Graham are on a sailboat, cruising Cape Breton’s Bras d’Or Lakes. It is August 1886. The telephone is 10 years old. Automobiles haven’t been invented yet and planes are forty years in the future. But boats…boats have been bringing people to our shores for centuries. They are the preferred mode of travel, especially in this neck of the woods.
The Bell’s are wealthy and world famous. And yet, when they could have gone anywhere, this is where they came to rejuvenate and get away from it all.
While much in the world has changed since Mabel & Alexander Bell boated here, the magic of the Bras d’Or has not.
Explore the Bras d’Or
The Bras d’Or Lake, a vast 1000-square kilometer in-land sea seems to possess magical qualities – salt-air breezes, good winds and rarely any fog. There are hundreds of isolated harbours to explore, with communities nearby that offer amenities and cultural activities.
Not far from Baddeck is Maskells Harbour, an uninhabited anchorage that inspired sailors to create the Cruising Club of America in 1922. Eagles soar above the steeply sloping hills here. National Geographic Society’s chairman (1980-2010) Gil Grosvenor once described sailing into this sanctuary like stepping into a cathedral.
Race the Cape: This challenging five-day race is an opportunity to experience the best in-land and coastal sailing Cape Breton has to offer. With stops at scenic Ben Eoin, North Sydney, the Barra Strait, Baddeck and St. Peters, you’ll see lots of what makes Cape Breton Island special. The race blends five challenging point-to-point races with local hospitality, great seafood on shore and the camaraderie of fellow sailors.
Out on the Mira: This is Nova Scotia’s longest river. The lush green riverbanks and 55 kilometers of calm waters make the Mira River ideal for boating with or without a motor. There are plenty of places to launch a canoe or kayak.
Bell famously said: ‘Don’t keep forever on the public road… going only where others have gone… leave the beaten path occasionally and enter the woods, every time you do, you’re sure to discover something you have never seen before.’
So make sure you take a side trip to Isle Madame. This island off Cape Breton Island has a number of villages and safe anchorages. Arichat Harbour is filled with history. It was raided by American naval hero John Paul Jones during the US War for Independence. Explore the Lennox Passage, the channel that separates Isle Madame from Cape Breton. Along the way, you’ll find the Lennox Passage Yacht Club in D’Escousse. Visit the friendly folks here during the annual Harbourfest days and you will be sure to enjoy delicious home-cooked meals and discover at least one long-lost cousin!
The waterways of Cape Breton Island are enchanting and there is so much to see. Cape Breton has a delightful mix of boating experiences, from river boating on the Mira River; sailing on the Bras d’Or to kayaking in D’Escousse.
And just like Alexander & Mabel Bell, you will find magic at every turn.
“Such magnificent landlocked harbours I never imagined…Every moment something new to please and enchant, to make the mere act of watching as the vessel rounds each curve a delight…this trip was a constant joy for us.”
-mabel bell, wife of telephone inventor alexander graham bell, describing a cruise on the bras d’or lakes in 1886, related post, tuna strike in baja, 1000 islands kingston poker run 2023, the 2024 american boat show calendar.

Sam and his crew organised this course for us in Greystones we had Michael as course trainer, the projection of skills and knowledge was awesome, I'm a great believer in learning and CPD but this was next level stuff. Such a pleasure to be in the presence of such experience. 5 days of reinforced learning. I came away from it feeling truly up skilled. Thank you Atlantic marine training.
SHANE CULLETON
Sam did a great job getting through all the required theory of the course while still making it interesting and fun. We then had hands on practical exercises to reinforce what we’d learned. I would highly recommend this course for anyone looking to get their VHF radio operators license.

The training was provided over three days and met all my expectations. I would recommend Atlantic Marine Training to anyone who is seriously interested in achieving boating qualifications in a manner that will not let you forget the essentials learned.

- La Niña – which slows the trade winds over the Atlantic Ocean. Slower trade winds weaken “shear” which is a feature that stints tropical cyclone development. Shear is defined by wind that may move too fast or change in direction with altitude.
- Sea temperatures – which are running at near-record warm temperatures. Warm oceans, especially waters over 80 degrees contains enough energy to help spark thunderstorm clusters that can produce tropical cyclones.
- African Monsoon – which is expected to run above normal, producing easterly winds that carry the right unstable conditions known to fuel longer-lived Atlantic hurricanes.

U.S. Hurricane Names Selected for 2024
- By Caleb Revill
- May 25, 2024
Hurricane season is upon us, officially beginning June 1, and meteorologists across the U.S. and around the world are on standby to track 2024’s tropical cyclones. Here’s an overview of what tropical storm names are selected for 2024 and how they are chosen.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) lists tropical cyclone names for 2024 through 2029 under its National Hurricane Center division, which started naming Atlantic tropical storms in 1953. These names are now maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

2024’s Atlantic tropical cyclone names are: Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Francine, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Milton, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sara, Tony, Valerie and William. If more than 21 named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, additional storms will take names from this alternative list of names approved by the WMO .
The National Hurricane Center also lists cyclone names for the eastern North Pacific basin for 2024 through 2029. 2024’s eastern North Pacific tropical cyclone names are: Aletta, Bud, Carlotta, Daniel, Emilia, Fabio, Gilma, Hector, Ileana, John, Kristy, Lane, Miriam, Norman, Olivia, Paul, Rosa, Sergio, Tara, Vicente, Willa, Xavier, Yolanda and Zeke. If more than 24 named tropical cyclones occur in the eastern Northern Pacific basin in a season, additional storms will take names from another alternative list of names approved by the WMO .
Additionally, four lists totaling 48 names are repeatedly cycled through for the central North Pacific.
Naming Hurricanes
Hurricane names are chosen by WMO’s relevant regional committees during their annual or biannual session, according to the organization’s website . These bodies establish a pre-designated list of names proposed by WMO members’ national meteorological and hydrological services.
The names –not named after individuals– are chosen by familiarity to people in each region so that they are understood and memorable. The WMO states on their website that naming procedures can vary by region and generally use the following criteria:
- Short in character length for ease of use in communication
- Easy to pronounce
- Appropriate significance in different languages
- Uniqueness – same names cannot be used in other regions.
U.S. tropical storm names in both the eastern North Pacific and Atlantic basins are named in alphabetical order. This means that the first Atlantic basin hurricane of the year will be named Hurricane Alberto. The next will be named Beryl, then Chris and so on.
According to the National Hurricane Center, the six lists used to name Atlantic and eastern North Pacific tropical storms are rotated and re-cycled every six years. For example, the 2023 list will be used again in 2029.
The only time this changes is if a storm is so deadly or costly that future use of its name for a different storm would be inappropriate due to sensitivity. If that happens, then another name is selected by the WMO committee during the organization’s next annual meeting.
A list of retired hurricane names published by the National Hurricane Center records 2022’s Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Fiona as the most recently retired names. Other notable storms listed are Hurricane Maria in 2017, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. These three tropical cyclones are the deadliest to hit the U.S. since 1980, according to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.
