37m 'Andiamo' ablaze in Miami

The most recent fire further highlights just how susceptible superyachts are to fire-related incidents….

A video that has been widely circulated online shows 36.6m Benetti-built Andiamo on fire at the Watson Island marina in Florida. It is believed the superyacht is the property of US singer Marc Anthony. Reports are currently suggesting that the incident will result in the total loss of the vessel.

According to the reports, more than 45 firefighters, as well as fire boats, were called to the scene in an attempt to fight the blaze from both the water and the land and stop it spreading to other vessels in the marina. However, the damage has been described as ‘catastrophic’.

Having been delivered in 2006, Andiamo was sold in 2011, 2016 and 2017 for €10.5m, $5.8m and $5.9 million respectively.

Fire remains a major cause for concern for the superyacht market. Indeed, since 2000 there has been 55 reported superyacht fires, which accounts for one per cent of total deliveries. In fact, fire represents the second most common superyacht incident reported, with many resulting in major or complete losses. Importantly, if these fires occur in either a shipyard or marina, it is more than likely that the blaze will generate a series of claims from neighbouring vessels and businesses, whether that be fire damage, smoke damage or other fire related claims.

Rather concerningly, since 2000 there have been a total of 397 reported superyacht incidents and, when one considers the private nature of the market, we can assume that, in reality, this figure should actually be significantly higher. The 397 reported incidents represent 7.1 per cent of all 30m-plus superyachts. However, by far the most common incident is detention/port seizure and, while arguably less serious than some of the other incidents, clearly highlights the market’s need to professionalise.

More often than not, when one considers the causes of fires on board superyachts, the natural inclination is to assume that the fault lies with one of either the new build or refit shipyards that have worked on the vessel over the course of its lifetime. The truth, however, is far more complicated. Increasingly, the causes of fires can be traced back to human error and third-party technologies.

In September 2019, Transport Malta published a report on the loss of 41m CCN-built M/Y Kanga in 2018.

On 7 September 2018 MY Kanga was at anchor in the coastal area of Dubrovnik, Croatia. While the first officer was on the bridge the fire panel gave off an alarm, indicating that there was a fire in the garage.

Upon inspection the first officer was overwhelmed by the presence of heat and smoke in the garage. The main fire alarm was triggered and the first officer called all crew and passengers to muster at the bow. An attempt was made to fight the fire; however, it was unsuccessful. The fire rose towards the upper decks and subsequently grew out of control. The yacht was abandoned on orders given by the master. No injuries were reported.

The ensuing safety investigation concluded that, in all probability, the fire had been caused by the Lithium-ion batteries of four electric surfboards.

Engineers, for the most part, have complete control of the engine room and technical spaces on board. They know the risks associated with these areas and they know how to manage them. The same, however, is not true of some of the more innocuous technologies that fall under the care of the crew.

As owners and guests have begun demanding more technology on board, an increasingly large number of third-party elements are being added to the vessel’s cargo, many of which rely on Lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are typically used in technologies that require charging. They are inexpensive, lightweight, powerful and, unfortunately, extremely combustible. For this reason, is it advisable that crew pay special attention to the risks associate with Lithium-ion batteries and how these differ from product to product.

While working on Kanga the crew had indicated that they were experiencing problems with the batteries of the surfboards, namely that there was sea water leaking into three of four of the batteries. They had notified the manufacturer in order to receive replacements, and the manufacturer advised the crew not to use the affected batteries. During the investigation into the cause of the fire, the crew admitted that they were not aware of how dangerous the Lithium-ion batteries were.

While we can only speculate about the cause of the fire on board Andiamo , this incident highlights just how common superyacht fires are becoming. Whether the blaze is caused by a fault with the vessel itself or as a result of human error and third-party technologies, as the industry continues to professionalise, it must be impressed upon crewmembers, guests and owners, just how common the incidents are becoming and what can be done to stop them.

The 35.75m/117'3" motor yacht 'Andiamo' is an excellent new superyacht for the luxury charter market. Delivered by the Italian shipyard Sanlorenzo and featuring interior styling by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola she can comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests in 5 cabins.

Guest Accommodation

Built in 2023, Andiamo offers guest accommodation for up to 12 guests in 5 suites comprising a master suite, two VIP cabins, one double cabin and one cabin that can operate as twin or double. She is also capable of carrying up to 7 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Keeping comfortable and entertained on Andiamo is easy thanks to the available amenities, particularly a deck jacuzzi, perfect to enjoy the scenery with your favourite drink in hand.

Performance & Range

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots with a range of up to 3,000 nautical miles from her 32,000 litre fuel tanks at 11 knots.

When not cruising Andiamo has onboard an incredible selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to connect with the waters around you. Principle among these are Flyboards which is a must for any self-respecting thrill-seeker, prepare for supersize thrills - even beginners will enjoy the thrill of swooping skywards and ‘dolphining’ back into the water. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. Another excellent feature are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. Take a crewed yacht charter on the wonderful catamaran Andiamo, a Lagoon catamaran that accommodates up to 10 guests. On board there are four double cabins and one semi double (for 1 adult or 2 children) with four bathrooms. The spacious flybridge is the perfect spot to relax and take in the views. Andiamo has a good selection of water toys for all guests to enjoy and the hydraulic swimming platform makes it easy to dip into the water for a snorkel.

Main features

WEEKLY CHARTER RATE 2024: High Season (July/August): €18,500+ VAT 12% + APA 30% Mid Season (June & September): €16,500+ VAT 12% + APA 30% Low Season (October - May): €14, 500 + VAT 12% + APA 30%

Summer Operating Area: Greece

Crew Gratuity: Although discretionary, a crew gratuity of 10-15% of the charter fee is customary.

CYBA/MYBA terms will apply.

APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance): APA is an estimate (usually 30% of the charter rate) paid with the balance for covering running costs during the charter (food, drinks, fuel, mooring fees, and anything else that guests might need while on charter). Final accounts will be produced by the Captain at the end of the charter and any unused funds will be refunded in full to the Charterer directly. If the funds are not sufficient, the Captain will advise the Charterer accordingly and bills will be settled upon disembarkation.

Payment conditions: 50% of the charter rate within 7 days of signing the charter agreement, remaining 50% plus VAT plus APA, at least 5 weeks before the beginning of the charter.

CAPTAIN: Grigoris Papathanasis

Grigoris was born in 1993 and grew up in Chalkida on the island of Evvia. Being close to the sea, he naturally started all kinds of watersports as a small child. At the age of five he got affixed to Canoeing and he laid the foundations for his future membership in the Greek national Kayak Slalom team and participation in numerous European and World championships. While sailing was always a part of his everyday life, he started his professional nautical career as a crew member on a 76ft catamaran on the island of Santorini. Since then, he consistently and patiently progressed his knowledge and experience and has been a Skipper since 2018. He likes to maintain a relaxed and friendly, yet professional atmosphere on board. Teamwork is the root of his DNA, ensuring that everyone is having a memorable time is his number one priority – getting the sails up and shutting down the engine is a close second when sailing with him. Grigoris is a very responsible and considerate sailor, always ensuring his guests’ privacy, yet being always attentive. He is a natural with children and enjoys teaching them Canoeing, SUP, Fishing and Seamanship. When not on a yacht, Grigoris enjoys a salty day on his surfboard or getting handyman skills to work with his family and friends. Grigoris holds an offshore as well as speed boat license and regularly updates his safety and first aid skills. He is a non-smoker, enjoys a healthy and sportive lifestyle and fluently speaks English next to his mother tongue, Greek.

Interior renderings of 44m Andiamo motorsailer revealed ahead of delivery

BAZ Yacht Design has revealed the first interior renderings of the 44-metre Andiamo . 

The superyacht is currently having her mast and rigging works completed at Ark Yacht 's facility in Bodrum, Turkey and will be delivered in time for the upcoming Med season.

Built in steel and aluminium, Andiamo 's exterior design and naval architecture is owed to Ginton Naval Architects .

Accommodation is for 10 guests across four VIP cabins and a full-beam owner's cabin with a private lounge and walk-in closet. Interiors are bright and contemporary, incorporating soft lines, bronze details and different wood bases for "contrast". 

Similar to the accommodation, the main saloon is outfitted in cool woods and a colour palette of creams and blues. The area is arranged with twin lounge spaces with coffee tables and a formal dining area for 10 guests.

Other leisure highlights include a partially-enclosed beach club that houses a bar and gym.

BAZ Yacht Design recently shared Project Kai with BOAT International . The 49.5-metre concept features an underwater observatory lounge with two possible configurations. Owners can install a gym and spa in the space, or a cinema and game room.

Entertainment | wayne newton returning to andiamo celebrity showroom, first time he’s been back in warren in more than two decades.

Newton, 82, who is known by the moniker “Mr. Las Vegas,” is scheduled to perform Friday, Oct. 11 at the Showroom in Warren.

Andiamo owner Joe Vicari said he’s excited about having Newton return to the Vegas-styled showroom, where he performed more than two decades ago.

“Wayne Newton has played for us before, but it’s been 22 years,” Vicari said Wednesday. “This is his first time coming back to us and we’re happy to welcome him back.”

The singer is known as a true star, having shared the stage over the decades with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Lucille Ball, George Burns, Jack Benny and Danny Thomas.

He has been entertaining Las Vegas crowds for 65 years and is scheduled to finish a residency at the Flamingo Hotel in June. For a while, he was the highest-paid act in Vegas.

Vicari said it’s important for him, as a promoter, to provide audiences with another look at various superstars of the past.

“You know, last year we had Engelbert Humperdinck and Paul Anka, so we’re trying to bring in some people that may not be around that much longer,” he said.

Known for his 1962 hit single “Danke Schoen,” Newton has performed 50,000 shows for upwards of 40 million people, according to USA Today.
