AirYacht reveals radical 52m airship-yacht crossover concept

Flying yachts, once the stuff of our wildest, most outlandish dreams, are slowly inching closer to a reality. As the industry prepares for the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival , BOAT catches up with  Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht, and Franck Darnet, the yacht's designer, to learn more about an exciting concept that's set to take to the skies in 2026...

Swiss company AirYacht has unveiled a radical new concept that marries the flying power of an airship with the luxury amenities of a superyacht.

Capable of flying between 100 to 3,000 metres above the ground with an autonomous cruising time of around one week, the AirYacht's groundbreaking design is composed of two separate modules: a 200-metre helium-filled airship attached to an ultra-lightweight all-carbon 52-metre superyacht residence.

The three-storey residence can be landed in its entirety or it can deploy a 12-person elevator to allow guests to disembark for a quick stopover.

Each module has its own complement of crew - the airship will have a crew of three and the residence will have a crew of 12.

The AirYacht is the brainchild of Guillaume Hoddé and Matthieu Ozanne, who founded the company in 2017 and enlisted the design expertise of Franck Darnet , who most recently worked on the exteriors of 63.8 metre Atomic . Born in Nantes and immersed in the world of Vendée Globe racing boats, Darnet has a masterful knowledge of "weight performance" technology that makes him uniquely suited to the challenges of airborne yachts.

The residence will have the same layout as a superyacht, with three decks, 750 square metres of indoor space and amenities including a gym, sauna, swimming pool and touch and go helipad.

Accommodation is provided for between ten and 12 guests in a five or six-cabin layout. Terraces, which can be used while the AirYacht is both underway and stationary, flank the starboard and port sides and there is an additional 120 square metre terrace-style lounge on the aft.

Aerodynamic shape and low weight are crucial to the design of the AirYacht. In order to keep the vessel as lightweight as possible, the residence component won’t be fitted with engines.

This creates additional space and increased flexibility to tailor the interior layout, while also allowing the residence to be built at AirYachts’ own facility without the need for a shoreside shipyard. When the residence is detached and on water, it will be towed by its tenders.

The AirYacht aims to give passengers the freedom to roam anywhere in the world, from lakes and seas to deserts and mountains. “On a normal superyacht you have to stay at sea. You can’t cross a hill or a mountain,” said Franck Darnet. “Most of the beautiful things that you see on our planet - some of them are next to the shore [...] but a lot of them are inland.”

In order to conceptualise the residence, Darnet had to rethink various different aspects of design. To this end, the crew quarters are in the forward upper part of the residence - in the section that ‘plugs’ into the airship - in order to give the crew to access the airship module.

The AirYacht also features large sections of glazing in the hull that allows passengers to look down, “because the most spectacular things that exist when you are flying are on the floor,” said Darnet.

While the AirYacht will be able to fly at dizzying heights of around 3,000 metres, the vessel is designed to cruise at heights of between 100 and 200 metres to allow for crystal-clear views of the world unfolding below.

The AirYacht will require ‘early adopters’ for it to take off - both literally and figuratively. “This isn’t a new ship, or a new yacht or new plane. This is a completely new thing,” said Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht. ‘New concept, new design. It’s like a dream.”

Currently, the AirYacht is powered by hybrid technology. “In ten years, we hope to have a full hydrogen version,” added Hoddé.

The first AirYacht will be able to achieve top speeds of 50 knots and the first unit is due for completion in 2026.

Guillaume Hoddé will be attending the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival to shed more light on the AirYacht and discuss the future of flying-focused yacht designs. The event will be held in Milan from 22-24 June. Tickets are still available to purchase .

The flying megayacht: Italian designer devises exclusive catamaran blimp

Miquel Ros

The aerospace industry is currently living through an era of innovation, unlike anything it has seen in recent years. From drones and air taxis to sea gliders and new clean propulsion technologies, it seems that the floodgates of creativity are wide open following decades of slow but steady incremental advances. Even airships may be about to stage a comeback .

This passion for innovation is encouraging entrepreneurs from across the globe to propose ever more outlandish concepts — one of which is the eye-catching Air Yacht, a hybrid vehicle that looks like a crossover between an airship and a catamaran.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

This futuristic aircraft is the work of Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini, founder of Rome -based Lazzarini Design Studio, which has designed a number of innovative projects for the automotive, yachting and aerospace industries.

air yacht location

Composed of two large parallel blimps linked together by carbon fiber bridges that hold the whole structure together, the amphibious Air Yacht would be able to move almost seamlessly through the air and water. Passengers and cargo would travel in a rigid, aerodynamic cabin between the two blimp structures.

This levitating contraption, which would be powered by hydrogen and solar power from its rooftop panels, would be able to reach speeds of up 70 knots (nearly 81 mph) when flying and 5 knots (almost 6 mph) when sailing, its designers say.

The choice of hydrogen is an interesting one, as other recent airship projects have opted to use helium instead of hydrogen.

Asked about this decision, a spokesperson at the design studio said it opted for hydrogen due to its larger lifting power, which makes it possible to limit the volume of the blimps. Despite hydrogen being flammable, current technologies and materials make it possible to use the gas safely and securely, the studio says.

air yacht location

While the original concept measured a whopping 265 meters (869 feet) long and was capable of carrying 200 passengers, the latest iteration is much more compact at 100 meters (328 feet) long. (Presumably, it would have a somewhat lower payload, too.)

The Air Yacht has a stated flying endurance of 48 hours, and it is being designed to allow for boarding and deboarding while on the move. Helicopters would be able to land on a helipad located on top of the cabin to drop off or pick up passengers, the studio says.

Given the limited number of travelers with access to helicopters, it's not surprising that the aircraft concept is targeted at wealthy individuals as a flying megayacht of sorts. The luxe cabin design features a shipowner's suite that occupies the central space and provides 360-degree views. Additionally, there are five smaller suites, plus a large area for lounging and dining.

air yacht location

Although Lazzarini Design Studio has yet to secure investors for the Air Yacht, the studio is moving forward with testing a 30-meter (98-foot) scale model in Germany later this year.

There will likely be some unexpected challenges in this next phase of the Air Yacht's production journey, and only time will tell whether this latest aircraft will help spark a renewed interest in airships.

The World’s First “Air Yacht” Would Sail in the Sky and Sea (With Zero Emissions)

By Jessica Cherner

vessel over the water flying in sky

Yachts and private planes make for luxurious ways to zip from one place to another, but recently, a businessman based in Germany and Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini discovered what happens when they combine boats and jets: the ultra-sleek sky yacht. Equipped with eight counter-rotating electric engines powered by super-lightweight batteries and solar panels, the nearly 500-foot-long yacht can traverse the sky (and sea) at 60 knots for more than two days straight with zero emissions. Plus, aside from its full-electric mobility, the air yacht is sustainable in other ways too: It will be built entirely from carbon fiber, which is as high-strength as it is lightweight.

boat in the water

The 500-foot futuristic vessel comprises three main parts: a central compartment with a living room and dining area flanked by two inflatable helium blimps that house 10 suites.

Lazzarini’s design looks like something out of the future: a spacious living room and dining area housed within the sky yacht’s central torpedo-shaped structure that’s connected via eight carbon bridges (four on each side) to two 150-foot-long blimps. And the blimps that contain a whopping 14,125,867 cubic feet of helium that keep the vessel high in the sky, flanking the main compartment, aren’t just there to elevate the jet: Between the two, there are 10 guest suites, all of which boast 360-degree views.

The two balloon-like compartments on either side of the impressive vessel comprise an inflatable base that allows the innovative machine to float atop the water surface when the owner is in the mood to sail the sea versus the sky. Though being able to choose which medium makes the most sense for specific destinations sounds like an ideal way to travel, the sky yacht is, unfortunately, still quite a ways off from replacing typical ships and planes.

vessel in the water with stairs

The enormous sky yacht is too big to simply park at a marina while its guests climb aboard, so it comes equipped with a retractable staircase.

For the private owner who commissioned the estimated $627,511,500 sky yacht, however, his new mode of transportation is the way of the future. In fact, Lazzarini has promised that a first-scale model prototype will lift into the air later this year, and a collection of slightly varying designs (of different lengths) is currently in the early phases of both engineering and prototyping. So, perhaps we’ll all be passengers onboard a boat that flies before the end of the decade.

Meet the AirYacht, a Bonkers Superyacht-Blimp Hybrid Concept That Can Cruise Both Sea and Sky

AirYacht Concept

AirYacht may not have the most original moniker, but the new concept is undeniably inventive.

Envisioned by Guillaume Hoddé and Matthieu Ozanne, the new two-in-one vessel comprises a luxe 197-foot superyacht and a giant 656-foot blimp that together enable cruising in either the skies or seas. The Swiss outfit that created it, which is also called AirYacht, says the two vessels can also be separated and used independently for even more versatility.

The detachable balloon, known as the “airship,” is currently powered by a hybrid propulsion system, though the team hopes it will run exclusively on hydrogen in the future. With space for three crew, it can reportedly reach 50 knots at full tilt and fly up to roughly 9,800 feet above the ground. It also has an autonomous cruising time of around one week, according to the firm.

AirYacht Concept

The AirYacht’s “lift” can deploy the superyacht without the airship needing to land (photo at top). When flying, the yacht is pulled into to the bottom of the blimp to become its passenger cabin.  Darnet Design/AirYacht

The adjoining superyacht, or “residence” as the designers call it, sports an aerodynamic hull crafted entirely from ultra-lightweight carbon to ensure it soars seamlessly through air or water. Spread across three levels, the living quarters span roughly 8,000 square feet and can accommodate up to 12 guests in a five or six-cabin layout. There are also amenities aplenty, including a Jacuzzi, pool, spa, gym, helipad and a garage for cars, toys and tenders.

Interestingly, the yacht itself doesn’t sport any engines as they add too much weight. As such, it will rely on the airship to get around. Hoddé told Robb Report the residence can be tugged by the airship when in water.

As for separating the two individual vessels, the AirYacht is equipped with an innovative launch system, or “lift”, which allows the superyacht to be gently lowered (or raised) without the airship ever needing to touch the ground.

AirYacht Concept

Penned by Franck Darnet of Darnet Design, the AirYacht is not to be confused with Lazzarini’s bonkers flying superyacht concept of the same name. (As we said, the moniker isn’t exactly original.) There are similarities, though; both yachts are powered by helium blimps and can take to the sky or sea.

AirYacht says orders are now open and the first delivery is planned for the end of 2026.

Each of the nation's border regions provides a nexus point where three transnational threats converge: drug trafficking operations, undocumented individual smuggling and contraband smuggling, and terrorist groups.

The border is not merely a physical frontier. Effectively securing it requires attention to processes that begin outside U.S. borders, occur at the border and continue to all interior regions of the U.S.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) views the border as a continuum of activities where the physical border is the last line of defense, not the first. Consequently, CBP's strategies address the threats and challenges along the continuum.

Headquarters

Air and Marine Operations (AMO) Headquarters is responsible for the management of all resources, policy direction and execution. Headquarters is also responsible for providing support to the field offices in order to fulfill mission requirements.

Air and Marine Operations Center

Neil lanzendorf, director.

The Air and Marine Operations Center (AMOC) is the nation's only federal law enforcement center tasked to coordinate interdiction operations in the Western Hemisphere. Located at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, California, the AMOC was established in 1988 as a state-of-the-art law enforcement Domain Awareness center to counter the airborne drug smuggling threat. AMO has expanded the AMOC's role in air and marine interdiction, and today the AMOC provides detection, monitoring, sorting, tracking and coordination of law enforcement response to suspect airborne and maritime activity at, beyond and internal to our nation's borders.

The center has been used to conduct unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and airspace security operations, response to natural disasters, covert and overt electronic target tracking and general aviation aircraft threat determination. The AMOC has acted as the clearinghouse for information and mission tasking during special events, national disasters and crisis situations, such as the Super Bowl, Hurricane Katrina and the 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

The AMOC's staff employs sophisticated systems and technology to identify existing and emerging homeland security threats. Staff use live radar presentations overlaid on detailed topographical maps and aviation charts, extensive law enforcement databases and tracking and communications networks to detect, identify, track and coordinate interdiction of suspect targets. The Domain Awareness system combines Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Department of Defense radars, AMO airborne systems and other sensors into a single facility, capable of the real-time tracking of more than 24,000 individual targets.

Currently, AMOC is accessing approximately 50 percent of FAA radars and is awaiting FAA permission and authorization to share data from another recently upgraded FAA radar data distribution network. Out of approximately 10,000 air tracks active at any given moment, AMOC investigates more than 25,000 domestic and foreign flights per month to separate legal air traffic from potential violators and terrorists. Staff is then able to precisely direct law enforcement personnel to suspect targets and support prosecutorial efforts.

National Air Security Operations

Scot winslow, director, national air security operations center-albuquerque.

National Air Security Operations Center - Albuquerque conducts operations throughout the contiguous United States, Puerto Rico and foreign areas. The center utilizes three specially-equipped aircraft and crews to support CBP and other federal agencies, such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). National Air Security Operations Center-Corpus Christi

The National Air Security Operations Center - Corpus Christi forms half of the P-3 operations wing, with its partner center in Jacksonville, Florida. Together they fly P-3 aircraft and conduct UAS operations throughout North and South America in defense of the borders of the United States and in active prosecution of attempts to smuggle persons or contraband. Additionally, the center is an active partner with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Department of Energy and North America Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) in times of national crisis such as Hurricane Katrina or post-9/11.

National Air Security Operations Center-Grand Forks

National Air Security Operations-Grand Forks (NASOC-GF) operates fixed and rotary-wing aircraft and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) from Grand Forks Air Force Base. NASOC-GF conducts initial and recurrent UAS training, and enforcement operations with manned and unmanned aircraft. Additionally, NASOC-GF aids in disaster relief and emergency response efforts of its federal, state, local and tribal partners.

National Air Security Operations Center-Jacksonville

The National Air Security Operations Center - Jacksonville, forms half of the P-3 operations wing. With its partner center in Corpus Christi, Texas, Jacksonville operates P-3 aircraft throughout North and South America in defense of the borders of the United States and in active prosecution of attempts to smuggle persons or contraband. Additionally, the center is an active partner with FEMA, the U.S. Department of Energy and NORAD in times of national crisis such as Hurricane Katrina or post 9/11.

National Air Security Operations Center-Sierra Vista

National Air Security Operations Center –Sierra Vista (NASOC-SV) operates the MQ-9 Predator B unmanned aircraft system (UAS), a national strategic asset, from Libby Army Airfield at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Established in 2005 as CBP’s first operational UAS site, NASOC-SV conducts UAS operations along the U.S. southern border while working in partnership with Joint Task Force – West, as part of DHS’ Southern Border and Approaches Campaign. Utilizing an onboard electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor and radar system, the UAS streams real-time actionable video and radar data to interdiction assets, providing them with critical situational awareness of ongoing tactical events occurring in both the land and sea domains. NASOC-SV operates the MQ-9 in various equipment configurations, including the Northrup Grumman Vehicle and Dismount Exploitation Radar (VADER) and the Raytheon SeaVue maritime surveillance radar.

National Air Security Operations Center-San Angelo

National Air Security Operations Center–San Angelo (NASOC–SA) operates unmanned and fixed-wing aircraft from Mathis Airfield in San Angelo, Texas. Established in 2018 as a permanent operational site for the MQ-9 unmanned aircraft system (UAS), NASOC–SA primarily conducts UAS operations along the U.S.–Mexico border in partnership with Joint Task Force–West as a strategic asset to DHS’s Southern Border and Approaches Campaign. Additionally, NASOC-SA operates a fleet of Pilatus PC-12 medium-range manned aircraft capable of high-altitude detection and surveillance for federal, state, local, and tribal investigative support operations.

Northern Region

Tony arevalo, director.

AMO's presence on the Northern Region was established August 20, 2004. The Northern Region operating environment differs appreciably from other borders and requires a different law enforcement approach. Northern Region locations were chosen with the strategic goal of providing an efficient and appropriate interdiction/law enforcement response to criminal activity.

The Northern Region is defined as the area between the U.S. and Canada, running from Washington State through Maine, including the Great Lakes region. The terrain, which ranges from densely forested lands on the west and east coasts to open plains in the middle of the country, is comprised of sparsely populated federal, state and tribal lands along the immediate border area.

Bellingham Air and Marine Branch

The Bellingham Air and Marine Branch is responsible for more than 90 miles of land border and 164 miles of water border with Canada. One of the unique challenges faced in the Northern Border Region is bi-directional smuggling, with contraband moving in and out of both countries.

Great Lakes Air and Marine Branch

The Great Lakes Air and Marine Branch provides primary aviation and marine response capabilities to the Border Patrol's Detroit Sector, which is responsible for securing more than 860 miles of international border between Canada and the U.S.

Manassas Air Branch

The Manassas Air Branch conducts security missions for events designated as National Special Security Events or given Special Event Assessment Ratings. It is also responsible for conducting airborne surveillance missions for federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

Southeast Region

John priddy, director.

With more than 2,000 miles of border, the sheer amount of area covered in the Southeast Region makes aircraft coupled with surface interdiction assets and ground agents a force multiplier to effectively counter all threats. Threats include combined aerial and maritime smuggling effort originating from the Yucatan and the Caribbean islands, such as Jamaica and Hispaniola, proceeding to islands in the southern Bahamas and Florida's western coast that moves the contraband to the United States. The areas of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are at the forefront of the threat consisting primarily of illegal alien and narcotics smuggling via marine vessels.

Caribbean Air and Marine Branch

The Caribbean Air and Marine Branch is the only federal law enforcement organization in the Caribbean Basin with integrated air and marine interdiction capabilities. It is charged with detection and interdiction of airborne and maritime smuggling and uses organic radar facilities to detect and intercept air smuggling attempts, and airborne radar tracking aircraft to detect maritime smugglers.

Jacksonville Air and Marine Branch

The Jacksonville Air and Marine Branch provides support to ensure the security of the nation's southeastern region.  The branch accomplishes this mission through the detection, identification and apprehension foreign and domestic terrorist and smuggling threats.

Miami Air and Marine Branch

The Miami Air and Marine Branch provides rapid air and marine response capabilities to address imposing threats to the southeastern United States. This includes detection, disruption and deterrence of illegal immigration, illicit drug trafficking, weapons trade and terrorist activity by utilizing a coordinated effort of air and marine assets, and working with our federal, state, local and tribal partners in south Florida.

New Orleans Air and Marine Branch

The New Orleans Air and Marine Branch has rapid launch capability to the Gulf of Mexico bordering the U.S. The branch's primary enforcement efforts target criminals engaged in illegal immigration, drug trafficking and terrorist-related incidents.

Southwest Region

William robinson, director.

Spanning more than 2,000 miles, the Southwest Region with Mexico includes extremely harsh and inhospitable terrain that represents a significant challenge to border security. The border provides a nexus point where three transnational threats converge: drug trafficking, alien smuggling and terrorism. The threat along the Southwest Region can be grouped by mode of transportation and type of suspect activity. While currently limited, aerial smuggling of narcotics and illegal aliens involves suspect aircraft that originate in northern Mexico crossing the Southwest Region with no correlating radar detection or authorization. AMO in the Southwest Region has been a long-standing deterrent to the alien, drug, and terrorist smuggling threat.

El Paso Air Branch

The El Paso Air Branch is a complex, multi-prong anti-terrorism operation with air units located in El Paso and Alpine, Texas and Deming, New Mexico. The branch's area of responsibility corresponds to the boundaries of the U.S. Border Patrol's El Paso Sector beginning at the New Mexico-Arizona border and east to the Sierra Blanca Mountain Range, near Sierra Blanca, Texas.

Laredo Air Branch

The Laredo Air Branch is responsible for more than 170 miles of international border with Mexico. The area of operations extends along the Rio Grande River from the Dimmit County line southward to the Falcon Dam in Zapata, Texas, and reaches as far north as Dallas.

McAllen Air and Marine Branch

The McAllen Air and Marine Branch’s operational area of responsibility covers 315 miles of Texas/Mexico Border, 117 miles of the Gulf of Mexico coastline, and areas from the mouth of the Rio Grande to Falcon Lake west to Corpus Christi, Texas. The branch provides an integrated air and marine response capability in support of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s anti-terrorism mission. The McAllen Air and Marine Branch also supports the U.S. Border Patrol, ICE, and other federal, state and local enforcement agencies.

San Diego Air and Marine Branch

The San Diego Air and Marine Branch is responsible for defending our international land and sea border from terrorists, illegal alien crossings and the smuggling of contraband. The branch provides air and marine response capabilities to the Border Patrol and Field Operations. In addition, the branch closely supports U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices throughout California.

Tucson Air Branch

The Tucson Air Branch is responsible for more than 365 miles of border with Mexico. The area of responsibility extends north to Nevada and Utah using the eastern and western state boundaries of Arizona as lateral limits. The state comprises more than 114,000 square miles of sparsely populated areas in the west desert and border areas where most aviation efforts are concentrated against narcotic and human smuggling.

Uvalde Air Branch

The Uvalde Air Branch's area of responsibility covers more than 200 miles of international border with Mexico. The branch primarily partners with the U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies throughout the region.

Yuma Air Branch

The Yuma Air Branch is responsible for patrolling more than 125 miles of international border in both California and Arizona.

A crowd gathered at St. Cloud's Mt. Peace Cemetery on Monday morning.

It’s the final resting place for many men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

For retired Air Force veteran Marko Milakovich, Memorial Day reminds him of Lima Site 85.

“That is the location, classified site at the time, where the Air Force suffered their highest casualties in a single ground engagement,” he said.

He said he knew those who died there. Many of which, he called friends.

Teresa Mailhot remembers her time in the Navy:

“I was one of the first females to go on to a ship. The Navy started a women at sea program in the early 80’s and my first ship right out of school was the USS Yosemite out of Mayport Florida, Jacksonville, and I served 5 years on that ship and made two long deployments,” she said.

She was transferred to San Diego before coming home.

It’s something she doesn’t take for granted.

“I can come to a service and reflect on the people that I knew that did not come back home,” Mailhot said.

Along with looking back, those we spoke to are looking forward, hoping to teach future generations the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“Make sure you don’t say ‘Happy Memorial Day’ because it’s not a happy day. It’s a sad day, a day of remembrance, a day of appreciation for all those who served and gave their life,” Milakovich said.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

Facing an Endless Barrage, Ukraine’s Air Defenses Are Withering

By Josh Holder and Constant Méheut

This is what a year of Russian missile strikes on Ukraine looks like. Ukrainian air defenses used to intercept most missiles, but in recent months, more and more have made it through.

The data, from a New York Times analysis of daily Ukrainian military reports, shows a major shift: Ukraine is increasingly failing to stop Russian missiles, crippling its ability to protect major infrastructure and plunging cities into darkness.

Russian air assaults have struck critical Ukrainian weapons factories and railways used to supply the front. They have also targeted Ukrainian troops on the front line.

Ukraine has been making desperate pleas for more air defenses from its Western allies, saying it is running out of critical supplies. But that is only part of the problem. Russia has also changed its tactics, firing larger barrages that overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses and faster missiles that are harder to shoot down.

Some attacks appear intended to make life difficult for civilians by striking urban centers , or damagng power plants and cutting off electricity to tens of thousands of residents, as was the case last week .

New Western aid will help. After prolonged political wrangling, the United States last month approved a $60 billion aid package, and more air-defense missiles have already been sent as part of the package.

But it could be months before enough weapons arrive to significantly bolster Ukrainian air defenses. And some problems, like Russia’s use of more advanced missiles, are likely to remain even after the aid is delivered.

The Times analyzed hundreds of statements released by the Ukrainian Air Force over the past year that detailed the number and types of missiles fired by Russia and intercepted by Ukraine over that period. While the data cannot be independently verified, experts who study the war say it is broadly reliable.

Share of Russian missiles

Number of russian missiles.

Much of Ukraine’s success last May, during another period of intense Russian missile barrages, was attributable to newly augmented defenses: It had just received its first Patriot system.

Considered one of the United States’ best air-defense weapons, the Patriot includes a powerful radar system and mobile launchers that fire missiles at incoming projectiles. Last May, Ukraine said it used the system to shoot down a Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missile, one of the most sophisticated conventional weapons in the Kremlin arsenal.

The arrival of the Patriot system and other Western weapons raised hopes that Ukrainian cities would now be better protected. Its allies have so far provided Ukraine with at least three Patriot systems and at least 15 other air-defense systems.

But this winter, when Russia once again ramped up its missile attacks, Ukraine was at a loss to stop them.

Russia had improved its tactics , firing larger and more complex barrages, including cruise, ballistic and hypersonic missiles. To confuse and overwhelm Ukrainian defenses, Russia often starts by launching attack drones, followed by waves of missiles fired from different locations.

In particular, Russia has increased its use of weapons that Ukraine has long struggled to intercept, such as the Iskander-M ballistic missile and the Kh-22 missile.

S-300/S-400

A short-range ballistic missile, it evades air defenses by releasing decoys that produce radio signals to spoof enemy radars and contains a heat source to attract missiles.

Originally an anti-ship weapon, it has been repurposed for land attacks. It travels at several times the speed of sound, complicating the task of air defenses.

Russia has increasingly used these antiaircraft missiles for land attacks. It often fires them at close targets, leaving little to no time to shoot them down.

Intercepted

Not intercepted

But Ukrainian commanders say there is a more basic reason for Kyiv’s plummeting interception rates: growing shortages of ammunition.

Last month, Russia destroyed the biggest power plant in the Kyiv region, an area that is one of the best protected in Ukraine, thanks to the presence of Patriot batteries.

“Why? Because we had zero missiles,” President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said in an interview with PBS NewsHour. “We ran out of all missiles.”

Russia, by contrast, fired 11 missiles at the power plant, he said. Ukrainian air defenses downed the first seven — but had no choice but to let the next four pass, he said.

That is the sort of decision a Ukraine short on munitions has to make increasingly these days, even if it may mean destruction and death for its citizens, military experts say.

“It’s the new rules of engagement,” said Tom Karako, the director of the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. “Sometimes, you have to let things go. And it may be that you have to protect your military forces over your population, for instance.”

Maj. Ilya Yevlash, a Ukrainian Air force spokesman, said that Russia had so many S-300 missiles that it was worthless to try to intercept them all.

“We cannot afford to deplete our invaluable stockpile of air defense missiles,” he said. “If we try to shoot them down, we won’t have enough Patriots.”

Shahed 131/136

These low-cost drones are designed to fly into a target and detonate on impact. Russia often launches them in swarms to overwhelm air defense systems.

Ukraine has been much more successful at intercepting attack drones. Data from the Ukrainian Air Force shows it has downed about 80 percent of them over the past year, almost all Shahed drones. That is because they are slower than missiles and can be shot down with less sophisticated weapons, like antiaircraft guns.

But Ukraine’s rate of intercepting drones has declined as Russia has adapted its drone fleet, changing flight patterns, bolstering speeds and painting them black to evade detection.

Konrad Muzyka, a military analyst with Rochan Consulting in Poland, said large and slow Russian reconnaissance drones had recently been able to operate behind Ukrainian lines around the cities of Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia.

“If you can’t shoot them down, then obviously this raises a significant question about the Ukrainian ability to provide an air-defense umbrella,” he said.

Ukraine’s need to triage its air-defense systems leaves some cities far more exposed than others. And Russia has made the most of this situation in recent months, hitting cities and regions that do not enjoy the protection of Patriots like Kyiv.

Since December, Russian forces have targeted, in particular, a large belt of land stretching from Kharkiv in the northeast to Odesa in the south. Ukraine’s western regions, which have been spared heavier bombardment for much of the war, have also been increasingly hit.

Note: Russian missile and drone strikes reported by the Ukrainian Air Force are shown. This does not include artillery shelling on the front line.

With air defenses limited, Major Yevlash said, the Ukrainian Air Force uses them in “non-standard ways.” It moves them around the country to adapt to Moscow’s changing tactics and to reduce the chances of the weapons being spotted and destroyed by Russian forces.

But that will not be enough to plug the holes in a country the size of Texas, said Justin Bronk, a senior research fellow for air power and technology at the Royal United Services Institute in London.

“Ukrainian commanders must constantly make extremely hard choices between defending critical national infrastructure, key military facilities, cities and troops on and close to the front lines,” Mr. Bronk said.

For one Ukrainian unit of drone hunters in the battered northeastern city of Kharkiv, the lack of defense systems has often left them watching helplessly as Russian missiles race overhead in the city’s direction.

“There are missiles that our forces can’t intercept with what we have, and they fly as they please,” said Barber, 23, a unit member, using only his first name under military rules. “We need Patriots for that.”

Methodology

To construct a dataset of Russian missile and drone strikes, The Times collected every statement posted by the Ukrainian Air Force on its Facebook page from April 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024. We used GPT-4 , an A.I. model, to tally and classify Russian missiles or drones reported by Ukraine, including their type, the date they were fired and whether they were intercepted. All of the data was manually checked to ensure that it matched the original posts.

In a small number of statements, Ukraine only described how many missiles it shot down and omitted how many Russia had fired. In these cases, there may have been additional missiles fired that were not recorded, and the intercept rates shown could be slightly lower.

The statements by the Ukrainian Air Force often group similar missile types together, for example “Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 missiles” and “S-300/S-400 missiles.” The analysis grouped missiles into types Ukraine regularly describes together. In a small number of statements, Ukraine grouped together different missiles, for example “7 Iskander-M/S-300/S-400 missiles.” These missiles are included in the total number of missiles fired and intercepted, but not in the counts for individual missile types.

The number of days each region of Ukraine has been targeted by Russian missile and drone strikes should be thought of as the minimum, as some Ukrainian statements did not mention which region was targeted.

A stranger raced to give a Marine vet his final honor: A high school diploma

Richard Remp, who enlisted during World War II and served in the Vietnam War, was honored by a Pennsylvania superintendent days before he died.

air yacht location

For months, Richard Remp’s friends scrambled to get him a unique gift. Remp — “Gunny” to his friends — was a 98-year-old Marine veteran whose military career started during World War II and ended after a combat tour in Vietnam. But his enlistment as a teenager cost him something that he hadn’t received since: a high school diploma.

Remp’s friends, fellow veterans in the post of the American Legion in Poolesville, Md., where he lived, contacted school officials in his hometown of Sharon, Pa., with a hopeful request: Could the Marine receive an honorary certificate?

Plans were made, then seemingly dashed when Remp’s health suddenly declined in early May and he was moved to hospice care. It was probably too late, Remp’s friends told Sharon City School District Superintendent Justi Glaros. She called them back a few days later.

“She’s like, ‘I’m printing his diploma now,’” Julien Singh, commander of the American Legion post in Poolesville, recalled in an interview with The Washington Post. “‘I’ll be there in 4½ hours.’”

On last Friday’s rainy morning, Glaros got in her car with the freshly printed Sharon High School diploma and a collection of Sharon High School-branded gear, and drove 300 miles south to Poolesville to perform a graduation ceremony at Remp’s home. He was ecstatic to finally receive his diploma, surrounded by his friends and family.

Remp died two days later. Glaros had gotten there just in time.

“The really last thing that he actually enjoyed, was able to partake in, was this diploma ceremony,” Singh said.

Glaros said the gesture “felt like the right thing to do.”

“I’m just so blessed that I had the opportunity to do it,” she said.

Remp dropped out of high school to enlist in the military in 1944, when he was 17, Singh said. During World War II, Remp was assigned to a Marine Corps aviation support squadron in El Toro, Calif., according to his obituary . He was later assigned to a naval weapons station in Yorktown, Va., and a Marine Corps air station in Iwakuni, Japan, where he serviced jets during the Korean War.

Remp was awarded a Navy Commendation Medal with a combat distinguishing device for his actions during the Vietnam War, according to his military service records. He served as a crewman and door gunner on a UH-1 Huey helicopter , and the few stories Remp would tell about his time in Vietnam came from that treacherous perch: Once, he crawled out onto the skids midflight to dislodge a rocket that had misfired and was hanging from the Huey, Singh said.

Another time, Remp’s helicopter hovered over a stranded reconnaissance team. He held back enemy fighters for over four hours with machine-gun fire until the team could be rescued, according to Singh and Remp’s obituary. For his actions that day, Remp was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat Device.

Remp, lighthearted and easygoing in retirement, described those moments with a characteristic understatement, Singh said.

“We’re sitting there, just smoking cigars, and he’s like, ‘You know, it was good to help those boys,’” Singh said.

After leaving the Marine Corps as a gunnery sergeant, Remp worked as a meat cutter in Montgomery County. His granddaughter, Donna Remp Hopkins, remembered him not as a military man, but as a doting grandfather and an avid bowler who taught children how to bowl on weekends, and spent Friday league nights at a Gaithersburg bowling alley shocking the younger players with his skill.

“Just a giving, warm, loving man,” she said.

James Cappuccilli, another Marine veteran and the second vice commander of Singh’s American Legion post, had the idea to secure that elusive high school diploma as a surprise for Remp in February. He contacted officials at Sharon High School and eventually reached Glaros, the district superintendent, who was eager to help once she learned Remp’s story.

Pennsylvania public school code allows boards to grant high school diplomas to veterans who were honorably discharged, did not graduate because of enlistment and served in either World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War, Glaros said. Remp qualified.

Singh, Cappuccilli and Glaros tossed around ideas. If Remp was up for it, he could even walk across the stage with Sharon High School’s graduates in June.

But Glaros found that Remp hadn’t attended Sharon High School, but a neighboring district. As they tried contacting the other school, Remp’s health suddenly and severely declined. Doctors discovered Remp had late-stage prostate cancer — seemingly out of the blue, as he had appeared healthy and energetic beforehand, Cappuccilli said. By mid-May, he was moved to hospice care in his home.

A heartbroken Cappuccilli delivered the news to Glaros in a call last week. He assumed there was nothing more they could do.

Glaros disagreed. She hurriedly discussed the issue with her school board president, she said. Pennsylvania’s honorary diplomas can be issued regardless of where a veteran was enrolled before they served. Why couldn’t Sharon High School honor Remp?

“The next morning, I went to work and gathered what I could, grabbed the diploma, printed the diploma, and then I just decided I was going to drive it,” Glaros said.

Glaros set off on the 4½-hour drive Friday morning while Singh and Cappuccilli, stunned, quickly organized a gathering of Remp’s friends and family, some of whom were already in town to celebrate Remp’s 98th birthday a few weeks before. Cappuccilli called the local news — it felt too storybook not to share, he said.

“I’ve watched a Hallmark movie at Christmas once,” he said. “And I thought this was as nice a gesture.”

With Remp’s friends and family gathered around his bed, Remp held his diploma and Glaros declared, on behalf of the state, her school district and Sharon High School, that she was formally issuing him the honor he had never received. The event had been a surprise until around noon, shortly before Glaros arrived, and Remp was in disbelief, Singh said.

“You people just don’t know what it means to me,” Remp said, according to ABC7 , which first reported on the ceremony.

Remp’s condition declined over the weekend, and he drifted in and out of sleep before he died Sunday, Singh said. He thinks the graduation ceremony was one of Remp’s final memories. Hopkins said her grandfather used the last of his strength to celebrate.

“Everybody was there,” she said. “This was a beautiful surprise for him. I just feel like he felt like everything was completed and done.”

Glaros, who returned to Sharon on Friday evening, learned the news shortly after Remp died.

“Instantly, I bawled,” Glaros said. “I just cried. It was like finally all my emotion caught up to me, because it was like I was on a mission from the moment they had called me.”

Sharon High School will hold a moment of silence for Remp during its graduation ceremony in June, Glaros said. She said she took the steps she did to honor Remp and his storied life, and seize a rare opportunity to give back to a veteran from her community.

“In my mind, I don’t have the opportunity to do something as amazing as they do,” Glaros said. “So, you know, this act was what I could give to Mr. Remp.”

To Singh, Cappuccilli and Hopkins, Glaros’s efforts were extraordinary.

“[A] total stranger, owes Gunny nothing, but wanted him to have this on his deathbed,” Singh said. “So he could have a high school diploma. And she drove down there, and it was above and beyond what really anybody could do. And I’m like, ‘You know, maybe there is hope for humanity.’”

Three US troops on Gaza pier mission sustain non-combat injuries

Three U.S. service members have suffered non-combat related injuries in the U.S. pier mission off the coast of the Gaza Strip, the deputy commander of U.S. Central Command said Thursday.

The troops were injured at sea, Vice Adm. Bradley Cooper said. One service member rolled their ankle, while another sustained a back injury, he said. A third service member was injured enough to require medical evacuation to an Israeli hospital, but Cooper declined to elaborate on the nature of that injury.

“From a privacy perspective, I would just leave it at we had two minor injuries and one, as I mentioned, was medivac,” Cooper told reporters.

Cooper said two of the injuries were “minor” and “routine,” and that those service members are back to work on the mission.

Military’s novel floating pier arrives in Gaza amid security concerns

The gaza aid pier is made possible by an oft-neglected but vital military capability known as joint logistics over-the-shore, or jlots..

The Pentagon did not immediately confirm when the injuries took place.

He also said there have been no attacks on the pier mission, but that U.S. forces remain “clear-eyed” about threats to service member safety.

Cooper also declined to say which service branch the three injured troops came from.

The Gaza pier mission uses an obscure military capability called Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore, or JLOTS, that generally involves sailors and soldiers.

The plan, announced by President Biden in his State of the Union address, has been touted as another way to get food to Gazans caught between the Israeli military and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which attacked Israel on Oct. 7.

It involves no U.S. troops on the ground in Gaza, according to the Pentagon.

JLOTS involves building a sprawling staging area in the middle of the sea, and then constructing a floating pier that can be stabbed into a beach, allowing trucks or tanks to roll off after ships bring them from the staging area to the pier.

In the Gaza mission, troops stabbed the pier into the beach late last week, but the flow of aid was interrupted over the weekend after aid trucks that had left the beach were overran, resulting in the death of at least one individual, The Associated Press reported.

Gaza aid pier mission involving US troops is off to a chaotic start

A u.s.-involved effort to deliver aid to gaza has begun tumultuously, with aid trucks overrun and at least one person feared dead over the weekend..

More than 1.1 million people are at risk of experiencing “catastrophic food insecurity,” according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification .

Since the pier has been stabbed into the beach, 1.2 million pounds of aid has been sent into Gaza, Daniel Dieckhaus, director for USAID’s aid response in Gaza, said.
