ABEGWEIT: Celebrating 40 Years as Columbia’s Club Ship

QSMV Abegweit – known affectionately as “Abby“ and home of the Columbia Yacht Club – celebrates the 40th anniversary of her arrival in Chicago, on April 15, 2023.

Now permanently moored in Monroe Street Harbor, Abby began her service in 1947 as an icebreaker and railroad car ferry that connected Canadian provinces Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. In April 1983 Abby set sail from its home port in Pictou, Nova Scotia on a two-week journey to her new home. Guiding the vessel were several of the ship’s original crew and Columbia members.

Known as the Queen of the Northumberland Straits while in Canadian service, Abby’s last voyage took her up the St. Lawrence Seaway and through the Great Lakes to Chicago. With Illinois registration numbers painted on her bows and being 372’ in length Abby holds the record as the largest privately owned yacht to make this voyage.

Columbia Yacht Club, founded on Chicago’s lakefront in 1892, proudly stands as an iconic symbol of Chicago’s maritime tradition. The Club is member-run, dedicated to promoting the sport of yachting, and the sciences of seamanship and navigation. It offers a full complement of sailing and boating activities, including student, one-design, inshore and offshore racing, cruising and social activities, as well as casual and gourmet dining aboard its vintage Club Ship, the QSMV Abegweit. The Club supports over 60 non-profit efforts in Chicago including the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation (JGASF), the Columbia Sailing School and Sea Scout Ship 5111.

Description

Since 1892, Columbia Yacht Club has been celebrated as one of Chicago's premier boating clubs and sailing organizations. It is located where Randolph Street meets the Lake Michigan shoreline. In the winter of 1982-83, Columbia Yacht Club purchased the MV Abegweit, a 372-foot, 7,000-ton train ferry from Canada. Its lower level held railcars and motor vehicles during the ship's service on the Northumberland Straight from 1947 to 1982. The ferry now serves as the club ship and headquarters. Once the most powerful icebreaking ship in the world, "Abby" remains "in service" today as an exclusive dining room and event space that offers unparalleled views of the Chicago harbor, skyline and Grant Park.

Visitor Experience

Columbia Yacht Club will be open for self-guided tours with member volunteers spread around the historic ship to give additional information. Most areas of the three main decks will be available for viewing. A video of the engine room and Abby's journey to Chicago will also be on display.

Open Saturday , Open Sunday , Photography Permitted , Skyline View , Washrooms Available

The word Abegweit is derived from the Mi'kmaq word for Prince Edward Island , Epekwit'k , meaning "cradled (or cradle) on the waves."

Abegweit crossing the Northumberland Strait in her glory days. MV Abegweit.jpg

The first Abegweit was laid down as hull 144 in November 1944 and was launched in 1946 at the Marine Industries Limited shipyard in Sorel , Quebec . Her designers were the famous Montreal design firm of German & Milne. Her owners were Canadian National Railways (CNR), operator of the Borden–Cape Tormentine service from 1918 to 1977.

This vessel was the most powerful icebreaker in the world at the time of her commissioning [ citation needed ] on June 28, 1947, and was reportedly the heaviest vessel ever constructed in Canada as well. Her patron at the time of commissioning was Katherine Francis Bovyer, wife of Prince Edward Island premier J. Walter Jones . She entered service on August 14, 1947 and earned the hearts of Islanders who affectionately called her the "Abby".

She measured 372 feet in length and displaced 7,000 tons. Her eight main engines generated 13,500 brake horsepower (10 MW) and drove propellers at both bow and stern. She could carry 950 passengers and 60 cars (or one complete passenger train of 16 railway cars).

The growth of vehicle and rail traffic by the 1950s soon made her obsolete, and subsequent vessels introduced in the 1960s and 1970s could carry more vehicles and rail traffic and could load and unload with greater speed.

The replacement for Abegweit was a vessel that was laid down as MV Straitway ; however, while under construction CN Marine decided to name this new vessel Abegweit . To accommodate this change, the original Abegweit was renamed Abby in fall 1982 and she maintained this name through the end of her ferry service. After finishing service on the Borden–Cape Tormentine route, the Abby was moved to Pictou, Nova Scotia and placed for sale during the winter of 1982–1983.

During the winter of 1982–1983, while the new Abegweit was in service between Borden and Cape Tormentine, the old Abby was docked at Pictou, Nova Scotia and advertised for sale by CN Marine. She was purchased by the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago, Illinois . Chicago city ordinances barred the club from constructing a clubhouse on the waterfront, so the club decided to purchase the Abby and permanently moor her at their facility.

Abby left the Northumberland Strait for good in April, 1983 and remains in "service" in Chicago. A curious phenomenon arising out of CN Marine's name-switch operation is that many in the general public assume the new vessel's name was Abegweit II — this is not the case as she was officially registered as Abegweit .

Abegweit was purchased by the Columbia Yacht Club in 1983 and moved to Chicago that spring. In 1986, she appeared in an action sequence in the film, Running Scared . She continues to serve as club house for the ColYC. The ship had new hull paint applied in 2010, preserving the traditional color scheme.

The Columbia Yacht Club was established in 1892 and has been based on the former ice-cutting Canadian ferry the MV Abegweit since 1983. I have visited this spot several times over the years since it has been freely accessible as an Open House Chicago venue (usually access is for Members Only). Poke around all the old ferry's interiors, some spaces are tight while others are a bit fancier. Enjoy the lovely views of Chicago from one of the decks.

Perfect location with an amazing view . We had a business lunch and the service and food was great . There's a huge cocktail menu and tons of things on the menu with options that are vegan , vegetarians and gluten free . We ate outside and then had a drink inside at the bar to cool down . Reminds me of an old school supper club .

One of my favorites in Chicago. My kids are members so it's an easy pace to visit for great service and excellent food. Sit outside on a warm night and enjoy the beautiful view. The bar is super fun on weekdays and they have a spectacular fireworks show on Saturday night. They have a broad menu that's sure to please everyone. They also have a beautiful tent for special events. Definitely try it!!

I was impressed with this place. Had a colleagues retirement party here. The staff was very professional, great with getting folks drinks and trays of food out. Even though the boat was docked it's a beautiful looking ship. The club chairs, wood, breezes off the lake.

I've been to Columbia Yacht Club many times for wedding, bday, date night and just get together with friends on random Tuesday night for $1 oysters stroll, I must say I've never been disappointed. Food here is average, atmosphere is above average and staff is just beyond words. We came with group of 20 for a private law school. Even though our event ended at 8pm staff was so friendly they kept the room open another two hours and didn't try to kick us out. They gave us boxes for take home on a catering event, allowed us to grab extra beer and wine before closing. We than moved the party from private room to main bar area which was just as fun and friendly. I think membership is definitely worth it if you're into boating and enjoy being in the water. I come for the ambiance, it's unbeatable.... someday I'll join as member till than thanks to all my awesome friends for the invite!

Fantastic food and everyone that works at the club make you feel like family. Best dining and social experience in Chicago.

We both had the deconstructed Paella. Don't get the deconstructed Paella it's not that good and borders on tasteless. Coincidentally, two weeks before this visit we were at a party where the hostess served Paella. Her dish was outstanding. The on-site sommelier is awesome! Make sure to ask for his assistance when choosing a beverage. Service is second to none at this location.

What a fun place. A friend took me while I am on a work trip and it was the treat/highlight of the trip. The facility is so cool and has a very low-key vibe. The decks seem so inviting - what a place to watch the lake, sunset, boating, birds and fireworks in summer. (BEST view of the fireworks - was kind of magical.) Dinner in the bar was loud and boisterous in a very good way. The waitstaff is OUTSTANDING - super friendly and charming and helpful. Food was pretty good for a boat! If I lived here, I'd want to be a member... tomorrow.

This club has fantastic lake views, wonderful service, and it seems the staff always has the ability to tell the lake shore story of this legendary ship-turned-club. There are places that do, in fact, smell like a ship. It was a negative for my guests, but a positive for those wanting to enjoy the experience of being on an actual ship. The food was more innovative than expected, but I am more a sucker for great environment and service than food. I was not disappointed in the the least.

The best view of the city, Amazing staff and good food. I wont lie and say it's cheap but you are never left unsatisfied regardless what ever you get on the menu. The Abegweit (the name of the ship) is beautiful and has so much history behind it, if you have some time I definitely recommend taking a walk on the upper deck and seeing the city.

A FLOATING KITCHEN: RENOVATING THE FOODSERVICE SPACE OF COLUMBIA YACHT CLUB

ABOUT US / PROJECT PORTFOLIO / COLUMBIA YACHT CLUB

Location: Chicago, IL

Scope: Design, Equipment Supply & Installation, Supplies

For a few days in the spring of 2023, people driving down Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, IL, got a sight not often viewed on this busy city street – a crane lifting crates of equipment onto a large ship docked in Lake Michigan. It was all part of a major kitchen renovation for Columbia Yacht Club, no small feat in the hull of a ship. The team at Boelter partnered with the architectural firm, general contractors and consultant Clevenger Associates to work on a design that fit the needs of the club while overseeing the project from start to finish.

The Columbia Yacht Club makes its home on the MW Abegweit, a ship that served as an ice-breaking vehicle and passenger ferry in Canada from 1947-1982. When it was retired and put up for sale, the yacht club bought the ship. It has been docked in Lake Michigan since 1983, serving as a gathering place and event center for forty years. Over time, the club’s needs have outgrown the ship’s kitchen. Members became frustrated with the time it took to get served during lunch and dinner, and the addition of a party tent able to host up to 200 people put even more strain on the kitchen.

Getting Creative in a Small Space

The renovation took what was a traditional galley kitchen and transformed it into a two-sided kitchen. The new space is designed with a bank of equipment in the middle, with workspaces on each side, one for meal service and one for events. This allows the staff to work on separate projects without getting in each other’s way, while sharing equipment to take full advantage of efficiency and production capabilities in a small space.

It’s always a bit of a challenge to redesign a kitchen, having to work around existing infrastructure. But in the ship’s hull the area was more cramped than most kitchen spaces, thanks to a short ceiling height and a steel structure that serves as support and couldn’t be knocked out like you can with walls in a traditional building. Boelter’s Ralph Aylward, designer, and Matt White, project manager, brought years of experience to the job that helped create a space to fulfill the client’s needs.

Kinley Hotel bar

Versatile Equipment Choices. The centerpiece of the new kitchen is a bank of three full-size combi-ovens. Previously the kitchen had just one under-counter electric oven, so the new equipment proved to be a game-changer in terms of getting a higher volume of food out fast. It also allows for versatility in menu creation. And the ventless, electric combi-ovens were a perfect fit for the ship’s kitchen where hood space is at a premium and gas is not an option. Other new additions to the kitchen include a tilting braising pan, one of the most versatile pieces of equipment available, according to Matt White, a four-burner range and two fryers.

IMG_0640_3

Efficient Workspaces. Ergonomics and efficiency were the priorities when creating the workspaces of the kitchen. With only five feet of space for the beverage station, a custom-built piece allowed Ralph Aylward to strategically place each necessary item for optimal efficiency. Another workspace, the prep area, is one of the highlights of the kitchen. Featuring three big sinks, double troughs and cutting boards, the line-up sits at the large window, giving staff a beautiful view of Navy Pier while they work.

IMG_0643

Customized Hoods. Where most canopy hoods extend out two feet past the equipment to pull out all the grease and heat, the short ceiling height would have had staff bumping their heads on a hood that size.  Boelter worked with the general contractor to install modified back-shelf ventilators that only come out 30 inches. The tapered hoods are a way to cheat the ceiling height and provide space to work, all while leaving room to attach to the ductwork above.

IMG_0631_square

An Adventurous Installation Process

The prep tables and other fabricated metal workspaces were custom-built onsite. But the ones coming fully assembled from the manufacturer presented a challenge in getting it onto the ship without a traditional loading dock. That’s where the crane came into place. For a few days, Boelter oversaw a process of getting equipment on the ship which included uncrating boxes on the dock and lifting each piece up to the ship’s deck. “It was more time consuming than most jobs because we were putting it up on the ship one piece at a time,” Aylward said. “Lifting it over the water was a bit stressful too, but it all went smoothly. Even the weather cooperated, without any rain through the entire process.”

Making a Better Work Environment

The newly renovated kitchen also saw big improvements on the overall atmosphere in the kitchen. Before, a decades-old HVAC system supplied air through vents in the floor. The system was not equipped to manage the heat and humidity produced by all the equipment in the kitchen. Temperatures often reached up to 102 degrees during peak work times.

To remedy that situation, Boelter worked with the general contractor to install five individual, self-contained wall-mounted air conditioning units on the walls around the kitchen. “It went from being interminably hot to now being one of the best places to work in the city,” Aylward says.

For years, Boelter has worked with the Columbia Yacht Club to also supply tableware and other kitchen and dining supplies. This kitchen renovation provided an opportunity to expand the partnership and make full use of Boelter’s extensive foodservice design, equipment and supply experience. “Being able to use one company for the full range of needs makes things easier on the client, and Boelter and Columbia Yacht Club make a great team,” White says.
