The 24.38m/80' catamaran yacht 'Ad Astra' offers the unmissable chance to charter a brand new superyacht, having only launched this year. Delivered by the French shipyard Fountaine Pajot she can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 cabins.

Built in 2024, Ad Astra celebrates the ocean in style, offering relaxed luxury with her abundance of deck space and grants access to the world's most beautiful, hard-to-reach anchorages thanks to her shallow draft.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

A charter on Ad Astra is comfortable and convenient thanks to the provided amenities, notably a beach club for you to relax on the edge of the water. Soak up the bubbles in style in the deck jacuzzi.

Whatever your activities on your charter, you'll find some impressive features are seamlessly integrated to help you, notably Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to stay connected at all times, should you wish. Guests will experience complete comfort while chartering thanks to air conditioning.

Performance & Range

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, she offers greater on-board space and is more stable when at anchor thanks to her full-displacement hull. Ad Astra comfortably cruises at 10 knots.

Onboard Ad Astra has a large selection of toys and accessories to keep you and your guests entertained on the water throughout your stay. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. Another excellent feature are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. In addition there are SEABOBs providing agile cruising and diving. If that isn't enough Ad Astra also features wakeboards, kayaks, fishing equipment, inflatable water toys and paddleboards. Ad Astra has a 5m/16'5" Highfield Tender to transfer you from ship to shore.

Sailing yacht AD ASTRA is a 2023 built 24.38m (80') Fountaine Pajot sailing catamaran offering exceptional luxury with features including a deck jacuzzi and accommodation for up to 10 guests in five suites. EXTERIOR This yacht is packed with deck spaces for wining, dining and sunbathing, all in complete comfort. The flybridge creates a sociable upper deck with elegant wrap-around sofas perfect for a large group of friends, or the whole family. The flybridge is fully equipped with a wet bar, as well as a plancha grill. Dual helm controls are forward and the whole area is sheltered by a hard roof creating a lovely relaxed and shaded space.

AD ASTRA Specifications

The expansive forward cockpit has its own bar and a selection of sun pads, sofas and a forward jacuzzi perfect for relaxing in the sun. The unique and innovative design has added 3m-long balconies which fold out of the bulwarks on each side of the cockpit, creating a huge area. You can dive from the balconies directly into the sea, or sit back and watch your friends do it, while you enjoy a drink on the sofa! These balconies extend the space considerably leaving the central cockpit area for a huge dining table, an additional sofa and a double-sided sofa/sunpad (aft-facing)

Down gentle steps on either side there is access to the central hydraulic platform that stands just above the waterline. When the platform is positioned in line with the port and starboard platforms, the space makes a lovely beach club with direct access to the water and an ideal launchpad for watersports. INTERIOR The interior space is exceptional with wooden floors and finishes and neutral soft furnishings. The main salon is huge with forward access to the foredeck and aft to the cockpit via wide glass doors which slide to open up the space. To starboard is a lounge area with facing sofas surrounding a coffee table while to port is a small pantry area plus a cosy area with occasional chairs next to the wine fridge – so you can take a moment away from the main group and taste the wine for dinner.

Yacht Charter Accommodation

The accommodation is configured across both hulls with five ensuite staterooms to choose from. The master suite and two double cabins are in the starboard hull while two doubles fil the forward port hull leaving space for the galley and crew accommodation aft. The master is a very generous space with ensuite and separate head, lounge area and significant wardrobe space. The other four suites are all doubles and also benefit from the luxury and privacy of ensuite bathroom facilities.

Ad Astra 5.4 Description

The Bali 5.4 is a ´Multihull of the Year´ award-winning catamaran. The design was new to the market in 2019 and provided a fresh approach to sailing. It is revolutionary in how space is accessed, with deliberate attention to flow and open space and it succeeds in producing a scale that feels less like a boat, and more like an upscale floating condominium. Bali catamarans are known and appreciated for their unparalleled success in blending luxury, space, and performance; producing a sailing experience that is unparalleled. This new design further capitalizes on that reputation with the advent of the ´Bali garage door´ that is the centerpiece of the yacht. It allows for the aft wall of the yacht to simply disappear, opening up the back of the yacht to an unobstructed view of paradise. This also affords indoor/outdoor dining options and gives the ever-present Caribbean breeze ample opportunity to make its way through the yacht with ease. With her solid foredeck gone are the forward trampolines, replaced by a large relaxing lounge area complete with cushions for sunbathing. A full-sized door provides access directly from the lounge area into the salon, allowing free movement through the yacht. A walk up to the flybridge unveils a seating area perfect for cocktails and taking in sunsets. There is also another area for sunbathing on the flybridge where you can take in the sights of the islands from the highest vantage point on the yacht. The Bali open space design is further complimented by the superior outfit and aftermarket items available on Ad Astra. No detail has been left unnoticed from the fine linens to the serving and flatware and crystal wine glasses that make every meal feel luxurious. She has been given every appliance and kitchen accessory to allow the chef to fully showcase the mastery of their skill set. The water toys abound, allowing guests to fully experience all the Caribbean has to offer, both in and out of the water. Ad Astra will accommodate 10 charter guests in 5 spacious queen cabins. Grant Surtees Born and raised in Durban, on the east coast of South Africa, Grant lived around the water and mountains experiencing all aspects of the outdoors while growing up. Family vacations and weekends where spent taking part in water sports, fishing and riding off-road motorcycles. After finishing college he started a career in sales for Land Rover & Jaguar. While the company car was a great perk, he soon realized that he longed for the outdoors. Looking for opportunity elsewhere, he gravitated towards yachting. Having a strong background with water sports and boats he found no difficulty adapting to that new life style which began in the South of France working on super yachts. He then made the move to the BVI working on catamarans and realized that the interactions with guests and being apart of something bigger, someone´s happiness and memorable moments was really what drove him. Outside of yachting, Grant´s other passions are kitesurfing, water skiing, wakeboarding, fishing and golf. He looks forward to sharing those activities and stories with guests. As a child she would often go sailing with a family friend and was always fascinated by the sea. Every summer Ulrika spent months in the Swedish archipelago at her grandmother´s villa. Her grandmother grew everything herself: a variety of different food crops, vegetables, herbs, fruit and berries. Her grandmother hosted countless beautiful family feasts that brought the whole family together. This experience built the foundation to Ulrika´s interest in food and cooking at a young age. While Ulrika was in high school, she went on an exchange year in Thailand where she spent the year living with the locals and learning about the culture and the language. During her time in Thailand she also fell in love with the local cuisine. Ulrika soon realized how much she loved traveling and exploring new places, cultures and cuisines. A few years later she got accepted into one of the world´s top ranking art universities in Helsinki, Finland to study product design. During these years she would often find herself catering for events, exhibitions and vernissages and always dreaming of and planning the next adventure. She moved to Stockholm and ended up working in tech for some years. She longed for a change and decided to pick up her sailing skills and took a sailing course in Tenerife. After rediscovering her childhood dreams of sailing and falling in love with the sea all over again she decided to take a close friend´s advice and combine her love for the sea and cooking. Grant & Ulrika, This trip was my favorite trip I´ve ever been on. The food was absolutely incredible, words can´t describe how much I loved it. Tubing was soooo much fun but I was scared for my life. The most incredible memory of a lifetime to celebrate my sons 30th birthday with our whole family! All was perfect, super clean and extremely comfortable. Plenty of various places to relax, had a very homey feel. The meals were outstanding. Ulrika was by far the best chef we have ever had. They were so attentive to our needs. The crepe birthday cake was magnificent! And sushi nigh....WOW! Grant and Ulrika were not only an amazing crew, we truly felt like we formed a new friendship. They were incredible!! We miss them already!!

Ad Astra Friends Charter May 2023 It´s hard to put into words how awesome and amazing our experience was onboard the Ad Astra. The boat itself is gorgeous, stylish ,and truly functional. There is no better way to navigate the BVI´s and experience the beautiful islands. The service, food, and ease of travel was all top notch. As soon as I arrived home on land my only complaint was not being back on the Ad Astra! If you want a trip of a lifetime, book Ad Astra. Not only was the scenery amazing and the island hopping one of the most fun things we have ever done, but the boat was also a dream. It was clean, spacious and had an upper deck area that was perfect for playing games, sunbathing, and watching sunsets. I am not exaggerating when I say that the food was some of the best I have EVER had in my life – sushi buffet, fresh fish, pasta, and more! The crew were top notch – they were fun, laid back and provided everything that we needed. We would go back in a second! Book now! Ad Astra, my new 2nd home. What an amazing experience we had touring the British Virgin Islands from this absolutely beautiful catamaran. Tom and Mollie added a lot of little personal touches that made our time on the Ad Astra so special. You also can´t beat the BVI´s for short sails and being able to feel like you are truly on your own adventure. We island hoped, wake boarded, snorkeled, hiked, paddle boarded and explored everything that the BVI had to offer and the Ad Astra had all the perks and tools we could have ever dreamed of needing to help us along our adventure. The Ad Astra seemed brand new, and we felt like we were on its maiden voyage. Everything was so clean and orderly and the finishes and little touches that make the Ad Astra what it is were top notch. When we were in passage or simply anchored the Ad Astra has so much free space for you to enjoy. From the fly deck where we played games to the hard deck at the bow that made for comfy lounging and perfect spot to take in some sun and enjoy the killer views and the stern and the spacious and open aft deck, the Ad Astra really felt like our home away from home. Tom knew all the best spots to share with us, and every meal was an absolute treasure. Fresh fish, sushi, pasta, fresh fruits, yummy breakfast, you name it, and Mollie has you covered! It was the perfect mix of relaxing, activities, enjoying the beautiful surroundings, action, party and rest that we could have hoped for. Everywhere we went we felt like we were arriving as the envy of everyone around us! I can´t wait to book the Ad Astra for our next adventure!

Our family had a dreamy week on Ad Astra and Tom and Mollie were the most wonderful hosts, catering to our every need in the most comfortable, gracious manner. The boat accommodated us all so comfortably and was perfectly appointed so that we could take full advantage of relaxing among the natural beauty around us. We were so well taken care of from start to finish, from our fabulous itinerary, our sails, our excursions, and the amazing food and drinks, it was a week we will never forget. We are already thinking of when we get back on board with Tom and Mollie!´

With her 36ft (11.07m) beam and 6.9ft (2.06m) beam, AD ASTRA is a sensational luxury charter catamaran, with huge deck spaces for up to 10 charter guests to spread out and enjoy every moment of their charter experience.

The massive aft deck boasts dining table and seating, lounges, day beds and unique “opening wings” each side for guests to enjoy a close connection with the sea. The expansive beach club is a great place for charter guests to sunbathe or launch watertoys.

At the bow, the foredeck features sunken lounge seating, sunpads, bar and a refreshing plunge pool/jacuzzi.

The aft cockpit offers incredible entertaining space with multiple sunbeds and a very large dining table. The large forward cockpit has its own bar and a vast sunbed in order to balance the aft relaxation area Under the sunbed is a Jacuzzi. A perfect area to enjoy, relax and take in the sun. The flybridge takes on the mantle of an extra deck, the real story is the elegant wrap-around sofa which provides a really convivial spot for a big group of friends, or the whole family. The flybridges fully equipped with a full wet bar, as well as a plancha grill. A large 3m-long balcony folds down out of the bulwarks on each side of the cockpit, creating an entirely new dimension to the relaxation options here. While the balcony invites you to dive into the sea alongside, it also creates the opportunity for a sofa, built into the cockpit coaming. In effect, it adds two ‘side cockpits’ to the main cockpit. Deep sofas to starboard and free-standing seating to port with cocktail tables both enjoy fantastic views of the sea through the wrap-around windows.

The flybridge takes on the mantle of an extra deck, the real story is the elegant wrap-around sofa which provides a really convivial spot for a big group of friends, or the whole family. The flybridges fully equipped with a full wet bar, as well as a plancha grill. A large 3m-long balcony folds down out of the bulwarks on each side of the cockpit, creating an entirely new dimension to the relaxation options here. While the balcony invites you to dive into the sea alongside, it also creates the opportunity for a sofa, built into the cockpit coaming. In effect, it adds two ‘side cockpits’ to the main cockpit. The Bali 5.4 is a "Multihull of the Year" award-winning catamaran. The design was new to the market in 2019 and provided a fresh approach to sailing. It is revolutionary in how space is accessed, with deliberate attention to flow and open space and it succeeds in producing a scale that feels less like a boat, and more like an upscale floating condominium. Bali catamarans are known and appreciated for their unparalleled success in blending luxury, space, and performance; producing a sailing experience that is unparalleled. This new design further capitalizes on that reputation with the advent of the "Bali garage door" that is the centerpiece of the yacht. It allows for the aft wall of the yacht to simply disappear, opening up the back of the yacht to an unobstructed view of paradise. This also affords indoor/outdoor dining options and gives the ever-present Caribbean breeze ample opportunity to make its way through the yacht with ease. With her solid foredeck gone are the forward trampolines, replaced by a large relaxing lounge area complete with cushions for sunbathing. A full-sized door provides access directly from the lounge area into the salon, allowing free movement through the yacht. A walk up to the flybridge unveils a seating area perfect for cocktails and taking in sunsets. There is also another area for sunbathing on the flybridge where you can take in the sights of the islands from the highest vantage point on the yacht. Meet the Crew

Grant Surtees

Born and raised in Durban, on the east coast of South Africa, Grant lived around the water and mountains experiencing all aspects of the outdoors while growing up. Family vacations and weekends where spent taking part in water sports, fishing and riding off-road motorcycles. After finishing college he started a career in sales for Land Rover & Jaguar. While the company car was a great perk, he soon realized that he longed for the outdoors.

Looking for opportunity elsewhere, he gravitated towards yachting. Having a strong background with water sports and boats he found no difficulty adapting to that new life style which began in the South of France working on super yachts. He then made the move to the BVI working on catamarans and realized that the interactions with guests and being apart of something bigger, someone's happiness and memorable moments was really what drove him.

Outside of yachting, Grant's other passions are kitesurfing, water skiing, wakeboarding, fishing and golf. He looks forward to sharing those activities and stories with guests. ..read more

Ulrika Fredrikson

Ulrika was born in the northern part of Finland. As a child she would often go sailing with a family friend and was always fascinated by the sea. Every summer Ulrika spent months in the Swedish archipelago at her grandmother's villa. Her grandmother grew everything herself: a variety of different food crops, vegetables, herbs, fruit and berries. Her grandmother hosted countless beautiful family feasts that brought the whole family together. This experience built the foundation to Ulrika's interest in food and cooking at a young age.

While Ulrika was in high school, she went on an exchange year in Thailand where she spent the year living with the locals and learning about the culture and the language.

During her time in Thailand she also fell in love with the local cuisine. Ulrika soon realized how much she loved traveling and exploring new places, cultures and cuisines.

A few years later she got accepted into one of the world's top ranking art universities in Helsinki, Finland to study product design. During these years she would often find herself catering for events, exhibitions and vernissages and always dreaming of and planning the next adventure. She moved to Stockholm and ended up working in tech for some years. She longed for a change and decided to pick up her sailing skills and took a sailing course in Tenerife. After rediscovering her childhood dreams of sailing and falling in love with the sea all over again she decided to take a close friend's advice and combine her love for the sea and cooking.

‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht' Season 1 Almost Sank the Series

The first season of 'BDSY' traveled some rough seas.

The Big Picture

• Below Deck Sailing Yacht had casting issues and crew dynamics that led to a messy first season.
• The show learned from its mistakes and retooled for Season 2, introducing a new cast that brought magic to the series.
• Captain Glenn and his new trio have become the longest-running and best group within the Below Deck franchise.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht was the second spin-off of the flagship program that was launched on Bravo. The first season introduced viewers to the crew of Parsifall III, a motoryacht with a twist: a big, ol' sail! Led by Captain Glenn Shephard , the first season was filled with the typical yachties that have made fans love the Below Deck programs. They even welcomed a familiar face in Chef Adam Glick to the yacht. With two seasons of Below Deck Mediterranean under his belt, he was meant to help steer the ship to success. But something didn't work. Was it the awkward boatmance between Chef Adam and Chief Stew Jenna MacGillivray ? Was it the real-life couple working on deck, Padget Berry and Ciara Duggan ? Whatever it was, after Season 1, Below Deck Sailing Yacht essentially emptied the bunks of Parsifall III and Captain Glenn returned with an entirely new crew — and the rest is history. Season 1 had growing pains and needed to be retooled in order for Below Deck Sailing Yacht to truly sail off into glory.

Below Deck has been one of Bravo's biggest assets since its 2013 debut. Following the work lives of a crew on a superyacht, Below Deck showcases the highs and lows of one of the most stressful jobs on the planet. Sure, it looks all luxurious and incredible, but the drama is real. Like many Bravo hits, to capitalize on its success, Bravo green lit Below Deck spin-offs. Following Below Deck Mediterranean , Below Deck Sailing Yacht followed the same formula, but it had growing pains that almost kept it docked forever .

In a reality TV series, a crew aboard a luxury sailing yacht navigates the challenges of providing five-star service to affluent guests while managing personal dynamics and the unpredictable nature of the sea. Each episode reveals a blend of high-seas adventure and behind-the-scenes drama among the crew members.

'Below Deck Sailing Yacht' Botched Its Casting

Below Deck Sailing Yacht set sail in 2020 in the stunning locale of Greece. With the job tougher than ever and the stakes higher than before, the success of Parsifall III truly depended on the wind in their sails. Beause it came with a new type of vessel for viewers to see, the 180-foot luxury sailing yacht was billed as an even grander once-in-a-lifetime experience. Unlike the flagship franchise's Captain Lee Rosbach and the first spin-off's Captain Sandy Yawn , Below Deck Sailing Yacht relied on an old faithful captain who spent many years aboard the ship. While the others have gone from vessel to vessel, Captain Glenn Shephard's vast knowledge of Parsifall III allowed him to welcome the viewers into his home away from home. Captain Glenn wasn't there to be a reality star ; he was there to do his job, the job he loved to do. To supplement the reality show tropes that make these programs watchable, Below Deck Sailing Yacht had to ensure the rest of the cast was filled with personalities that would be enticing to watch.

Since Parsifall III already had members of the crew on board, the show decided to keep two members of the sailing yacht's crew, casting them as the power couple that they thought fans would fall in love with. Prior to the start of the season, Paget Berry was the yacht's First Officer, the closest position to a Bosun, while Ciara Duggan was a stewardess, working in the interior. But for some bizarre reason, likely for added drama, Captain Glenn pushed Ciara to the exterior to act as a deckhand, which meant she would be working under her boyfriend.

Fans also learned that this would mark the first time the pair ever worked directly with one another in this capacity. Has this ever worked to solidify a healthy relationship? Very rarely. With two familiar faces on Captain Glenn's staff, Below Deck Sailing Yacht brought on a Below Deck alum to help integrate the show into the Below Deck Cinematic Universe. Chef Adam Glick had a whiplash of a journey during his time on Below Deck Med . Often found bickering with Chief Stew Hannah Ferrier , undermining her authority, and going rogue with his meals like putting onions in dishes when the primary specifically put on his preference sheet that he did not want them, Chef Adam was an interesting option to be the familiar face for the franchise to start with. But hey, an angry, temperamental chef is a stereotype for Below Deck so it seemed fitting .

The Interior Team Was a Nightmare on Season 1 of 'Below Deck Sailing Yacht'

Knowing Chef Adam had a rocky relationship with the head of the interior, it was expected that whoever was in charge on Parsifal III would suffer the same fate as their counterpart in the Med. But it couldn't be further from the truth. Jenna MacGillivray was brought on as Chief Stew. She was not the warm and cuddly personality, but had a similar demeanor to the original Below Deck Chief Stew Adrienne Gang . Both women's mission was to assert their authority and had run-ins with many of their colleagues. For Jenna, there was one exception: A second romance bloomed on Parsifall III between Chef Adam and Chief Stew Jenna.

On paper, watching love blossom should warm the hearts, but this duo was toxic, and Jenna left a lot to be desired, as she rarely ever took accountability for focusing on her school-girl romance with Chef Adam over her duties as Chief Stew. The interior team is central to the story, as they spend the most time with the guests on camera. Jenna became unbearable when she fell in love , and things got messy. Her obsession with her relationship over her job almost sank the ship.

With so many questionable choices in the cast, there had to be someone on the crew that could breathe sanity into the Below Deck spin-off. Turning to the interior, Jenna's two stewardesses were Madison Stalker and Georgia Grobler . Madison very quickly became the audience's voice of reason as she saw the chaos on board. She dealt with the brunt of Jenna's frustrations and lack of interest in establishing a working relationship with her. Madison was great at her job, she just never got the praise she deserved. She became the season's punching bag; hence, the majority of her story was filled with Jenna trying to tear her down, and Chef Adam following suit because he had to side with his girl.

When it came to Georgia, the 3rd Stew was clearly unaware of relationship boundaries. It's one thing to have a crush, but when you're living and working with your crush, whose girlfriend is also sleeping feet away from you, perhaps it's best to turn things down a few notches. Georgia's crush on Paget was simply uncomfortable to watch. Her entire journey on Below Deck Sailing Yacht comprised of trying to serenade Paget with the only original song Georgia had in her songbook. What was worse? Paget fed into it — with his girlfriend present! Her flirtation was cringe, and yet it wasn't even as hard as Jenna went for Chef Adam.

Michael Cohen returns to the stand to detail hush money payment

Donald Trump’s longtime fixer and lawyer Michael Cohen is back on the witness stand today in the former president’s hush money trial. Cohen is expected to delve into payments he said he received from Trump in return for hush money paid to adult film actor Stormy Daniels in the final days of the 2016 presidential campaign.

At the heart of yesterday’s testimony was a running theme: that Trump was personally aware of every step in the payments both to Daniels and former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal — an allegation that prosecutors had failed thus far to show. Cohen told the jury that Trump directly authorized him to pay Daniels $130,000. Cohen said that he then paid Daniels with his own money, and that Allen Weisselberg, the former CFO of the Trump Organization, devised a plan to form an outside shell company to repay Cohen in installments that were listed as being for legal services provided under a retainer agreement. Cohen testified that no such retainer existed. Read more highlights from Day 16 of the trial.

The defense, for weeks, has sought to puncture Cohen’s credibility with the jury, and witnesses have painted him as hot-headed, self-interested and untrustworthy. Expect more of that when cross-examination begins, as early as today. Here’s what else is in store today.

Jan. 6, Senate matchups and party fights: What to watch in tonight’s primaries

Voters head to the polls in four states today for primaries that will set up key Senate races and settle other intraparty battles, including a race that features a Jan. 6 Capitol rioter and another featuring a police officer who battled the rioters that day. Maryland, West Virginia and Nebraska are holding primaries, and North Carolina is holding runoffs for races in which candidates didn’t win a majority of the vote in its March primaries. 

Trump’s endorsement is on the line in West Virginia, where he shaped the race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin. And Trump is sure to notch two endorsement wins in North Carolina, where two of his preferred House candidates are the only ones left standing. 

On the ballot tonight is a familiar face for those who watched the testimony during the House’s investigation into the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol: former Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn, who is running in Maryland’s 3rd District. A Jan. 6th rioter, who pleaded guilty to a felony count of civil disorder, is posing a far-right challenge to congresswoman Carol Miller from West Virginia. 

Polls close at 7:30 p.m. ET in West Virginia and North Carolina, 8 p.m. ET in Maryland and 9 p.m. ET in Nebraska. Here are four things to watch.

Caitlin Clark ahead of her WNBA debut: ‘Soak in the moment’

All eyes will be on Caitlin Clark this evening when the biggest star of women’s basketball makes her pro debut. Clark’s Indiana Fever takes on the Connecticut Sun, where a sold-out crowd (and a national television audience) will witness the start of a new era for women’s sports. No women’s basketball player had previously received the kind of attention and adulation as Clark, the two-time national player of the year out of Iowa and college basketball’s all-time leading scorer.

“This is what you’ve worked for and dreamed of, and now you get to put your jersey on for the first time and go out there and play. More than anything, just soak in the moment,” Clark told members of the media over the weekend.

The WNBA is hopeful that Clark’s star appeal will translate to the pros, and it seems some changes are already afoot . For the first time (and not so coincidentally), women’s teams will fly charter for all games. And Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said the league is eyeing a monster TV deal next year.

On the eve of Clark’s pro debut, Iowa women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder announced her retirement after 24 years leading the Hawkeyes.

Russian political shake-up hints at Putin’s true focus

The removal of Sergei Shoigu as Russia’s defense minister is the most dramatic shake-up of the country’s military leadership since the war with Ukraine began more than two years ago. And, according to observers of the Kremlin, it shows that President Vladimir Putin is ready for a long fight with Ukraine and its Western allies.

Shoigu isn’t gone completely. He has been appointed secretary of Russia’s national security council, replacing another Putin ally who will be appointed to a new job that has yet to be announced. (Putin rarely fires people in his inner circle outright.) Replacing Shoigu will be 65-year-old Andrei Belousov, a civilian economist whose “unexpected but logical” appointment could offer insight into Putin’s war plans . With the war in its third year, the Kremlin needs to fully militarize not just Russian society, but also the country’s economy, analysts said.

Orcas sink yacht off Spain’s coast

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said yesterday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years. The vessel, Alboran Cognac, which measured 49 feet in length and was carrying two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, on Sunday, the service said.

Those on board reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After they alerted the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.

The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank. The incident is the latest example of recurring orca rammings around the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates Europe from Africa, and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Woman recalls stage dive that left her severely injured

A 24-year-old woman is working to regain function in her fingers and toes after a singer’s stage dive at a punk rock concert left her severely injured. In an exclusive interview, Bird Piché detailed what she felt as Trophy Eyes frontman John Floreani leaped backward into the audience at the April 30 show — and onto Piché. “It was like his body and my neck,” she said. Her family said she was paralyzed when she went to the hospital but has since regained basic movements of her arms and legs. “I have a long road ahead, but I’m very optimistic right now,” Piché said.
