Fan Letters: “Sunderland need to target ready-made Championship players this summer”

Sunderland’s recruitment is on the agenda today, with doubts about the type of player we’ll be bringing in this summer, as well as reinvesting money from player sales. Got something to say? Email us: [email protected]

Dear roker report,.

If and when the new head coach arrives, it looks as though they’re going to have a ready-made team at their disposal (that is if you believe that Kristjaan Speakman is already scouting throughout Europe for cheap players), but it’s not good enough.

We need Championship players this summer instead of players that haven’t played here before.

It’s already been proven with previous foreign signings, and it hasn’t worked because we were going down.

I believe that Speakman has to go because he’s at failed his job.

Season ticket sales for 2024/2025 are going to be reduced if this summer doesn’t pan out well.

Alan Fenwick

Ed’s Note [Phil]: Hi, Alan. Thank you for your letter. Following the dismal end to our 2023/2024 season, and the six-point gap to the relegation zone when the full time whistle blew against Sheffield Wednesday, the upcoming summer transfer window is set to be our most important in two years, because there’s precious little forward momentum at Sunderland right now and the fans are understandably eager to see action being taken. I don’t doubt that the club will maintain its focus on recruiting young and exciting talent, which is absolutely fine, but that simply must be balanced by bringing in some battle hardened and Championship-proven players as well. I’d also like to see us make far better use of the free agent market and to burnish our squad with a handful of lads who are familiar with the rigours of a forty-six game Championship season, and can also offer support and guidance to their younger teammates. After flaws within our structure were exposed during the second half of the season, failing to address them this summer isn’t an option if we’re to avoid another season of turmoil during 2024/2025.

Leeds United v Sunderland - Sky Bet Championship - Elland Road

Lately, I’ve sat back and noticed how many dissenting voices we’re hearing regarding the club’s ‘model’.

I’ve said as such many, many times and have been shot down in flames by fans who thought this was a new dawn for the club.

Everyone was waxing lyrical about how good it would be (in theory) to build up the value of a player before selling him on and reinvesting the money straight back into the team.

However, as we now know from the sale of Ross Stewart, that isn’t going to happen.

Instead, we’re going to be scraping along and looking for rare diamonds to unearth, which isn’t going to happen, because we can’t just go out and replace the likes of Jack Clarke if he leaves the club.

Another cause for concern is finally hitting people in the face, and it’s the fact that we’ll never hire a head coach who’ll cooperate indefinitely with the ridiculous notion of not being involved in player recruitment.

The club is apparently trying to emulate the likes of Brighton and Brentford, but the managers at those clubs never simply sat back while a man in a suit went ahead and bought players that he thought the club needed.

It’s simply absurd that a new head coach will be given a set number of players for a given position from Kristjaan Speakman, before being told to fit a square peg into a round hole.

For proof of this, you only have to look at what’s happened since Stewart was sold, as we’ve brought in umpteen forwards but none of them were suited to the style of play we were becoming renowned for.

This way of operating will have a new head coach gushing about how big the club is because he’ll want to build up his CV, and if he can get us into the playoffs under such restrictions, it’ll serve him well once he leaves and looks for a new job.

I’m not suggesting that we should spend untold millions, as that doesn’t always work (just ask Alex Neil when he was at Stoke City), but I’m saying that the new head coach simply has to have a say, because it’ll never work otherwise.

Surely everyone can see the flaws here?

We can’t blunder on, pretending everything is OK and hoping that the new guy will have a magic touch.

I don’t know how to push those in the boardroom to be flexible, as it already appears that their rigid approach is leading to delays in hiring a new head coach.

The longer it goes on, it’ll become apparent that they either have to move the goalposts a bit, or we’ll be left on the starting blocks as the new season approaches.

Peter Milton

Ed’s Note [Phil]: Hi, Peter. Thank you for getting in touch. Although I’m by no means advocating for the dismantling of Sunderland’s current structure and for the five-year plan to be ripped up, I completely understand why skepticism would be mounting from fans such as yourself after a season of three head coaches, some poor signings, and a thoroughly underwhelming sixteenth-place finish. Do I hope that the club will learn from its mistakes, adjust the parameters of the model, and show a willingness to be flexible when it comes to recruitment and the amount of control given to the head coach this summer? Absolutely. Do I see it happening? I’d be lying if I said I did, even though we’re likely to have a larger budget once player sales are factored in. Although the structure at Sunderland isn’t unique within football nowadays (sporting directors are tasked with overseeing operations at many elite clubs, after all, and the era of the iron-fisted manager is arguably over), the demand at our club is far greater as promotion is always the aim whenever we find ourselves in this league, and patience is sometimes not in great supply. The model has its upsides and downsides, but I do believe that with some tweaks, it can give us a fighting chance of competing for promotion. If they get it wrong this summer, they’ll deserve all of the criticism that’s aimed in their direction, but if they get it right and we start to move forward again, praise will be due. Time will tell.

Sunderland v Leeds United - Sky Bet Championship

It’s about time we appointed a new manager.

Also, if the owners want to bring success to Sunderland, we should keep Jack Clarke, who’s our best player by a mile.

Janice Sherry

Ed’s Note [Phil]: Hi, Janice. Thank you for your letter. It’s not a great situation, is it? Michael Beale was sacked three months ago, and the process to find his replacement (which has theoretically been exhaustive and relentless in its search for the right man) shows no signs of ending, but let’s hope for a breakthrough on that front soon. When it comes to Jack Clarke, I’m certain that he’ll be off this summer, probably when one of the Premier League sides swoops in with a lucrative offer that would be impossible to turn down. Personally, I could just about deal with Clarke going (even though a Sunderland team without him in it is quite a scary thought), as long as we were able to put the money received to good use in the transfer market. Let’s hope the club have got some targets in their sights.

Sunderland v Millwall - Sky Bet Championship

The second I see the words ‘pundit on Sunderland AFC’, I skip the report, as these so-called pundits have about as much idea of the goings on at Sunderland as you or I.

They don’t report the actual situation; instead, they create a situation by twisting actual reports and then reporting on it, much like the mainstream media when reporting an ‘exclusive’ from the back end of nowhere!

Who’s interested in some of the drivel served up as ‘transfer latest’, etc? Nobody, and I’m sure players from all clubs don’t concern themselves with these reports.

I’d suggest that all these pundits who are supposedly ‘in the know’ stop getting carried away with their sense of self-importance, and tone down some of their wild suggestions.

Do they honestly think that their ravings about available players and managers will alter the plans of the owners? Not in a million years?

Meanwhile, it was clear to me in recent months that half of our team (in my opinion) are just not good enough when compared to the teams going up.

That’s not to say that they don’t put a shift in; it’s just that they’re not good enough to get us promoted.

Keith, Lanzarote

Ed’s Note [Phil]: Hi, Keith. Thank you for getting in touch. Frankly, all of the transfer rumours and latest ‘hot gossip’ circulating on social media makes me long for the days of Ceefax and the old ‘Sunderland ClubCall’. All you needed was a telephone and some time on your hands, and all the latest news was at your fingertips- as long as you didn't mind paying premium-rate fees for the privilege, that is! Nowadays, it’s all about those clicks, which in turn generate cash, and it’s how we end up with completely pointless Sunderland-related stories being packaged up as news that we simply have to know about. It’s both entertaining and infuriating at times, and given that the Sunderland fanbase can be lured in by these articles whenever we’re desperate for transfer news, those publishing them know exactly how to get us to bite. That’s modern football, I guess.

Bodies found in mexico confirmed as those of missing american and australian tourists.

baja.jpeg

Three bodies found dumped in a well with gunshot wounds to the head have been confirmed as missing tourists, including a US citizen, Mexican authorities said Sunday.

Relatives of American Jack Carter Rhoad and Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson identified their bodies without having to perform genetic tests, the Baja California Attorney General’s office said in a statement on Sunday.

Three Mexican citizens previously questioned in relation to their disappearance have been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, the attorney general’s office said. One of the suspects was identified as Jesús Gerardo “N,” alias “El Kekas.”

The three friends were on a surfing and camping trip near the town of Ensenada, about 60 miles south of the border city of Tijuana, when they went missing on April 29.

Baja California Attorney General Maria Elena Andrade Ramirez met with parents of the victims on Sunday and “reaffirmed the institution’s total commitment to continue the investigation into these unfortunate events until those responsible are fully prosecuted by the law,” she said.

A burned-out white pickup truck discovered at a ranch in Santo Tomas is the same car that the two Australians and an American man were driving before they went missing, according to a local police source speaking to CNNE on Friday.

Related article Murdered bodies ‘most likely’ those of missing surfers, Mexican investigators say

The surfers may have been attacked in an attempted vehicle robbery, officials said, citing preliminary investigations. Baja California  has been plagued by cartel violence in recent years, though it rarely occurs in tourist areas like Ensenada.

A burned-out white pickup truck was found at a ranch in Santo Tomas, about 40 miles from where the bodies were found, a local police source told CNN. The vehicle was confirmed to be the same one Callum Robinson posted an image of on Instagram a week before the trio went missing.

‘Infectious spirit’

The confirmation of the surfers’ deaths is heartbreaking news for desperate relatives who had flown to Mexico hoping for better news – and for their friends back home.

Jake Robinson, a 30-year-old doctor, had left Australia about two weeks ago for “a trip of a lifetime” with his brother, his parents previously told CNN affiliate Seven News.

The siblings went to Coachella music festival a week before they crossed into Mexico with their American friend, planning “to surf for a few days,” parents Martin and Debra Robinson said last week.

“Callum and Jake are beautiful human beings. We love them so much and this breaks our heart,” they said in a statement before departing Perth, Western Australia.

The bodies of Callum and Jake Robinson were found in a well in Baja California, Mexico.

Callum, 33, was a member of Australia’s national lacrosse team and a Stevenson University alumnus. He was based in San Diego, California.

In an Instagram post, the Maryland college said, “Callum will be remembered for his infectious spirit and larger-than-life personality.”

“With his beautiful long hair and charming smile, he truly embodied the nickname ‘big koala’— warm, friendly, and always there to lend a helping hand,” the post said. “Though he may be gone, Callum’s legacy will live on in our hearts forever.”

Callum’s friend Hayley Jacobs told CNN affiliate Nine News that he “lit up a room.”

She said she saw him on the morning he left for Mexico, but quickly felt something was wrong when she didn’t hear from him.

“I don’t know what’s going on but I think he’s mad at me, like something doesn’t seem right,” she said.

‘We need security’

While parts of Mexico are established tourist destinations, violent crime including kidnapping and human trafficking plague parts of the country, particularly in border areas. Mexico’s homicide rate  is among the highest in the world, and more than 100,000 people remain missing in the country.

Drug cartels have terrorized the country with ever-increasing levels of violence and cruelty, fueled in part by huge demand for drugs from US consumers and armed with an arsenal of weaponry from north of the border.

In 2015, the bodies of Australian surfers Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman were found in a burned-out van in Sinaloa state. Authorities said they were killed by low-level drug dealers who had been robbing motorists.

The latest suspected murders sparked outrage in the surf community of Ensenda, where about 500 people marched on Sunday to call for justice and better security, Australian public broadcaster ABC reported.

“We are here in solidarity with our friends from Australia and the United States,” local surfer Héctor Estrada told the ABC.

“We are a big community of surfers all over the world and we need security, we need the beaches to be safe [for] camping around, surfing or just playing with your family, friends.”

A demonstrator holds photos of the surfers during a protest in Ensenada, Mexico, on May 5, 2024.

Another resident, Ana Acosta, told the ABC: “I’m asking for justice and security from the government and for the state to provide to us surfers.”

In a statement Sunday, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry expressed its condolences over the suspected killings.

“The Foreign Ministry stands in solidarity with the families of the victims in this tragic event and deeply regrets the outcome of the events,” it said.

A related USTR release explains that the USTR recommended that products from China currently subject to Section 301 tariffs should remain. Additionally, in light of the increased burden on U.S. commerce, President Biden is directing the USTR to add or increase tariffs for certain products.

The report also makes recommendations for:

  •  Greater collaboration and cooperation between private companies and government authorities to combat state-sponsored technology theft
  • Continuing to assess approaches to support diversification of supply chains to enhance our own supply chain resilience

President Biden is also directing the USTR to establish an exclusion process for machinery used in domestic manufacturing and to prioritize exclusions for certain solar manufacturing equipment.

  • The USTR in May 2022 commenced the statutory four-year review process by notifying representatives of domestic industries that benefit from the tariff actions of the possible termination of those actions and of the opportunity for the representatives to request continuation.
  • The USTR in September 2022 announced that because requests for continuation were received, the tariff actions had not terminated and USTR would conduct a review of the tariff actions.
  • The USTR opened a docket on November 15, 2022, for interested persons to submit comments with respect to a number of considerations concerning the review. The USTR received nearly 1,500 comments.
