By Rebecca Bradbury   16 January 2018

The 59m/194ft superyacht SENSES from Fr Schweers Shipyard is available for charter in exotic South Pacific destinations such as Fiji and Tahiti  throughout 2018.

A 6,000 nautical mile range, an unrivalled water sports package and a sumptuous Philippe Starck interior make SENSES perfect for long-distance, off-the-beaten-track cruising. Indeed, there could be no finer choice for cruising the wonderfully remote waters of the South Pacific .

With tropical sunshine, palm-fringed beaches, azure waters and friendly people whose traditions date back centuries, paradise is to be found among the 7,500 heavenly islands of the region while undertaking a once-in-a-lifetime private yacht charter .

There’s more here than just idyllic shores and secluded beaches, however. Yacht-goers can snorkel rainbow-hued reefs, scuba dive with manta rays, hike verdant valleys, kayak through mangrove-flanked lagoons and discover diverse island cultures.

From the cascading waterfalls and blue lagoons of Fiji to the reef-fringed luxury playgrounds of Tahiti and Bora Bora to the spectacularly unspoilt and action-packed Solomon Islands , there is an island-chain to suit the desires of you and your charter party.

What’s more, luxury yacht SENSES is also taking bookings in the bucket list destinations of Australia and New Zealand , opening up myriad cruising opportunities in this fantastic corner of the globe.

For help deciding where to cruise in the region, our article -  How to Choose a South Pacific Island for Your Luxury Yacht Charter - will be sure to offer assistance.

With tropical sunshine, palm-fringed beaches, azure waters and friendly people whose traditions date back centuries, paradise is to be found in the South Pacific

Across the yacht’s six decks are a choice of luxe areas designed for relaxation and entertainment. Unwind in the Jacuzzi, enjoy delicious alfresco meals with the entire charter party, lay back on sunpads in the glorious sunshine and sip cocktails in chic seating areas.

The expansive deck space means there is plenty of room for the huge water toy inventory. Have hours of fun on the water with Waverunners, jet skis, diving gear, kitesurfs, kayaks, a jetpack and jet-lev and much more.

Contemporary and understated, the interior provides the very best in barefoot luxury. The opportunities for socialising, relaxing and dining continue with huge windows allowing charterers to keep in constant connection with their cruising grounds.

After a day at sea, guests can retreat into one of six cabins, including a full-beam master suite, two double cabins, three twin cabins and a convertible office. In total, the expedition yacht can sleep 12 guests and there is also an on-board gym and dedicated massage area.

What’s on Trend in Yacht Interior Design for 2021?

NEWS | October 06, 2020

What’s on Trend in Yacht Interior Design for 2021?

Marble and quartz. Light woods. Off whites and soft Champagne color. Japandi. Glass and chrome. Minimalism... The design trends for 2021 borrow from the past while looking toward the future. The teams at Horizon’s two in-house Design Centers discuss the trends they are implementing in both smaller and larger yachts while lending their expertise to styles and looks that will inspire and turn heads in 2021.

1 | THE PALETTE A warm and neutral color palette is the background of the 2021 yacht interior. Unlike the Scandi style that favors pure white, a warm or neutral background complements muted colors and natural hues, like brown and beige. No longer boring and conservative, beige has seen a comeback for providing a serene neutral tone upon which textures and pops of color can add visual interest. Champagnes and other variations of beige add elegance while grey and black accents add drama without being overbearing.

Image 3840: 2132

The 2021 interior design finds common ground between bright and cold colors. Add cooler hues of muted pink, blue and green, warmed up with earthy details and wooden elements. Pops of color can also be introduced, but only when used sporadically so as to not interrupt the harmony of the design.

Image 3841: 3130

2 | NATURAL ELEMENTS Natural, tactile accents are on trend for 2021, so invite nature to join you onboard! Choose high quality furniture constructed of simple and natural materials, such as mid-toned wood with exposed grain. Match furniture with natural, textured fabrics like linen.

Image 3842: 4128

Light woods are a popular material for yacht interiors as they create a comfortable, homey atmosphere. This material can be used not only for flooring, but also for wall coverings and ceilings. Use light, untreated woods to highlight multipurpose spaces.

Image 3843: 5131

When working with a neutral space, texture is key. Add interest by combining different yet complementary materials and textures for a touch of natural simplicity. For warmth, soft, tactile fabrics make a space cozier. Add linen cushions, fuzzy rugs in a plain color, a statement wall art piece in neutral tones, or a living plant to serve as a focalpoint – what better way to achieve the natural look and blend the indoors with the outdoors than with plants and greenery!

Image 3844: 6127

3 | FINISHES Natural elements like wood, metal, glass and stone are the dominant materials in 2021. Coated metals in bronze, iron grey or black lend an unobtrusive, yet refined look, and are swiftly usurping polished stainless steel. Thanks to advances in technology, engineered stone is now a great alternative to natural stone. It is durable, non-porous, and offers a variety of unique patterns and high-contrast veining.

Image 3845: 7127

In the galley, eschew shiny surfaces for relaxing, matte finishes. Only metal accents should shine in this space. Stylish galley designs blend wood with concrete, metal with stone, or glass with artificial materials. It’s also a space where you can have fun, so be bold by combining various textures of one material or similar materials in different colors.

Image 3846: 838

Luxurious head design remains a focus for 2021. White marble or quartz are timeless and sophisticated materials that can be used for flooring and wall coverings as well as countertops, and beautifully complement woods and metal accents for an instantly luxurious look.

4 | HIDDEN FUNCTIONALITY Because space is critical within a yacht’s interior, multifunctional furniture provides flexibility and versatility. A foldable dining table can be transformed to a sofa table or breakfast bar to permit open space for gathering or wider circulation. The hi/lo table can be casual at coffee table height or formal at dining height, and an extendable function fulfills the needs for both intimate family dinners or a large feast. Keep in mind, however, that these pieces should not only be functional and fit the space, but must be visually interesting as well.

Image 3847: 9122

Solid cabinet doors hiding shelves and organizers are also on trend for 2021. Floor-to-ceiling galley cabinets are both functional and stylish, or a modern galley can incorporate low cabinets only for a spacious and luxurious look.

Image 3849: 11114

5 | LIGHTING Never underestimate the importance of lighting in yacht design! Highlight natural lighting wherever possible, taking care to not block windows or incorporate heavy furniture or cabinetry. Incorporate smart technology fiber optic lighting, which offers many advantages, such as being heat free, simple to install, safe, precise, durable and easily maintained. Fiber optic lighting also allows for a variety of colors and programmed settings that can shift from starry night to party mode at the touch of a button.

Image 3850: 1228

Less clutter and cleaner lines define 2021’s look, and simple lighting designs blend perfectly into modern decors. Low-profile fixtures with soft colors and simple geometric designs that follow the Minimalism trend are becoming even more popular. Linear fixtures and track lights also bring harmony and the perfect amount of intentional light to a space.

Image 3851: 1351

6 | MATERIALS Complementing the neutral palette and natural finishes, a textured fabric or wallpaper with contoured lines, vivid patterns or colors remains popular.

Image 3852: 14109

Leather is another preferred and durable material, as it brings a sense of quality and luxury to an interior, holds up against sun exposure and wears well when cared for. Incorporate leather into your interior as an accent piece, a wall covering, or a piece of furniture for that casually elegant look.

Image 3853: 15105

While design preferences differ by market, Modern and Contemporary will be the preferred styles in 2021. Favored in the U.S. market, Modern styling displays bold lines, warm woods and the use of symmetry of space to create a balanced aesthetic. Popular in Europe and Australia, Contemporary styling embraces curved shapes, organic accents and rounded edges. This style welcomes variations and is always evolving, and works well with cooler hues and the latest interior gadgets. Both of these styles successfully execute the simplicity, neutral and natural color palettes, artistic touches and openness described above – perfect for creating a relaxing and luxurious atmosphere on board.

These are the Yacht Interior Designers to Know

Designing a superyacht is a personal experience and involves making an overwhelming amount of choices.

By Sophie Killip

senses yacht interior

For those seasoned individuals who have experience chartering yachts , visiting friends’ yachts, sailing the high seas, or maybe even purchasing their first pre-designed yacht, the next thrill might come from building their own vessel. Although designing your own superyacht is a truly personal experience, it also involves making an overwhelming amount of choices. This is why the first step to building a new superyacht should always be to choose a designer to work with – and there are several yacht interior designers you can choose from.

Whether it’s considering how the internal spaces of your yacht will work, what furniture or materials are used, or even working out the external design for your new vessel, collaborating with a designer will make the process of creating your dream superyacht as stress-free and easy as possible. To help, Elite Traveler has created a list of yacht interior (and exterior, in some cases) designers that should be on your radar – and if you’re also on the lookout for a new yacht builder, why not discover our list of the best luxury yacht builders in the world ?

[See more: How to Design an Amazing Superyacht Interior]

Winch Design

Our list of the best yacht interior designers kicks off with  Winch Design. Originally founded by Andrew Winch and his wife Jane in 1986, at the time it was known as Andrew Winch Designs. It was rebranded as Winch Designs in 2015 but has been one of the UK’s leading superyacht and private jet design studios for over thirty years. Winch Design’s yacht studio is now led by Jim Dixon and the team has created a multitude of extraordinary projects, all of which are highly bespoke and tailored to each client’s specific requests.

One of Winch Design’s most recent yacht projects was the 260 ft M/Y Excellence , which shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen say was its “most challenging project to date”. Its owner worked closely with the design studio to create a yacht with interiors inspired by the “Floridian East Cost Deco” style and that felt both personal to him and welcoming to any guest on board. “ Excellence was a very exciting project to be involved with and [she] tested the team to their creative limits,” says senior partner, Ignacio Oliva-Vele.

Terence disdale design.

Based in the UK, Terence Disdale Design is one of the yachting industry’s most respected design studios. The team works on both the interior and exterior design of some of the world’s most incredible yachts, with previous projects including M/Y Eclipse , one of the biggest superyachts in the world. The studio was founded by Terence Disdale, who – despite having no formal training – is one of the most sought-after designers in the industry.

Disdale set up his eponymous studio in 1972 after working for famous designer Jon Bannenberg (Bannenberg’s studio was also where Andrew Winch and Tim Heywood learned their craft). Across his extraordinary 40-year career Disdale and his studio have designed over 100 yachts, including more than 50 superyachts. His wide-ranging design style often follows the mantra of ‘beach house, not penthouse’, with concepts often finding inspiration from the ocean.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Australian yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni’s career began after he studied Industrial Design and found his first position working for shipbuilder Oceanfast. It was thanks to the experience he gained at this renowned shipbuilder that Sorgiovanni decided to set up his own studio, launching Sorgiovanni Designs in 1997 in Fremantle, Western Australia. The studio has also recently opened an office in Monaco in order to expand its design services to Europe.

Sorgiovanni believes it’s important to “keep one eye on the past” when designing projects, “in order to avoid making the same mistakes” as before. Previous yacht designs that he has worked on include the 390 ft Amana in collaboration with Oceanco, and the exteriors of the 270 ft Secret. When Sorgiovanni is not working on a particular project, he is also traveling the world to consult on yacht designs for clients, working with a variety of suppliers and shipbuilders.

Zaniz Studio

Yacht interior designer Zaniz Studio exterior of Luminosity

Next up on our list of the best yacht interior designers is Zaniz Studio. The company was founded in New York City by English-American designer Zaniz Jakubowski – who up until recently, had rarely been able to discuss her astounding portfolio of projects due to the NDAs that came with the commissions. The studio has an international reputation for creating iconic and innovative projects, which always have strong attention to detail. As well as designing for both private and commercial yachts, Zaniz Studio works across other industries, including creating theatre sets and residential and commercial interiors.

One of Zaniz Studio’s latest projects – and one it was able to share – was the 350 ft superyacht Luminosity , which went on the market last year for over $266 million. The studio was responsible for both the interior and exterior of Luminosity, which was built by Italian shipyard Benetti. What is most interesting is that the team abandoned the typical format of designing the exterior first, followed by the interior; instead, the superyacht has been designed from the inside out.

Nuvolari Lenard

Well known for its timeless design style, Nuvolari Lenard is one of the largest – and most active – luxury yacht design studios in the world, founded in 1992 by naval architect and mechanical engineer Carlo Nuvolari and stylist Dan Lenard. The studio is based in Italy’s island city, Venice, and draws heavy influence from the city for its classic yacht designs, combining strong architectural lines with a deep passion and understanding for the sea. One of its latest projects was the 465 ft Nord (previously called Project Opus).

Not only is Nuvolari Lenard based in Venice, but it also has a renowned Design Center on the outskirts of the city that hosts architects and designers working on a range of tasks. Inside the Design Center is a scale yacht model workshop that gives designers the opportunity to visualize their concepts and research shapes before confirming a final design. The interior design section of the studio’s Design Center also features a showroom where clients and designers can discuss fabrics and materials.

Patrick Knowles Designs

senses yacht interior

With decades of experience in the marine industry under his belt, Patrick Knowles is one of America’s top yacht designers. His studio, Patrick Knowles Designs , specializes in custom megayacht and superyacht interiors, as well as designing for private aircraft. The team at Patrick Knowles Design prides themselves on their creativity and a strong commitment to making sure projects are finished on time, while also exceeding expectations.

One of Patrick Knowles Designs’ award-winning projects was a Key West-inspired 206 ft ISA displacement superyacht. The owners requested an interior that felt like a five-star tropical resort; through a design that incorporated vibrant murals of plants and aquatic life, lush fabrics and furnishings, and the use of environmentally friendly, natural materials including bamboo, palm wood and coconut shells, Patrick Knowles delivered. The onboard showcase piece is a 30-foot-tall light fixture constructed from Murano glass that sits within the spiral staircase, joining all three levels.

Tillberg Design of Sweden

Tillberg Design of Sweden yacht interior designer superyacht Somnio

Our list of the most exclusive yacht interior designers would not be complete without mentioning Tillberg Design of Sweden. Founded in 1964 in Höganäs, the practice has been designing timeless Scandinavian-inspired interiors on board some of the world’s most luxurious vessels for over five decades.

Known for its meticulous craftsmanship, use of quality materials and expert lighting, when it comes to creating beautiful spaces you’re in safe hands with Tillberg Design of Sweden. Perhaps most impressive is the studio’s latest project designing the interiors onboard the gigantic 728-foot superyacht Somnio .

The recently released renderings reveal stunning dream-like rooms expertly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. Future owners that are lucky enough to live on the world’s first residential yacht liner will be given the opportunity to work with the prestigious design firm over three months to create their dream apartment.

Larry Page’s superyacht Senses sheltering in Port Nelson, New Zealand

Larry Page’s superyacht Senses is being forced to spend the weekend in Port Nelson, New Zealand waiting for the weather to clear.

The Google co-founder’s 59 metre Senses arrived at Port Nelson on Monday (3 August) having left Westhaven Marina in Auckland on the Friday (July 31). A crew member has told local press that the Senses is likely to remain in Port Nelson until the weather improves, when it will then continue towards New Zealand’s Fiordland.

Fiordland is the country’s largest national park situated in the South West corner of New Zealand’s South Island, with an area of more than 12,500 km². The area boasts some of the country’s most dramatic natural scenery and is a beautiful place to visit if you are sailing your superyacht to New Zealand or enjoying a luxury yacht charter in New Zealand .

It is not clear whether Larry Page is on Senses , which he reportedly bought for more than $4om in 2011 from New Zealand’s Sir Douglas Myer.

Senses is described as the “ultimate discovery yacht” and has four high speed tenders, a helipad and a nautical range of 6,000 miles. It is possible to charter Google founder Larry Page’s luxury yacht Senses from €400,000 a week.

Built by Fr. Schweers shipyard in Germany in 1999, Larry Page’s superyacht Senses has been creating quite a stir in Port Nelson, with locals coming down to take pictures of her striking design. The superyacht was first spotted in Auckland in early July and it is unclear how much longer she will be in New Zealand.

New Zealand celebrated a rise in the number of superyachts visiting last year with a record number visiting ports in the country. Earlier this month one of the world’s largest yachts Ocean Victory arrived in Auckland after battling storms.

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

<p>It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.</p>

<p>Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.</p>

<p>Movie nights under the stars should have a whole new appeal aboard UK builder Sunseeker’s brand-new 98-footer. Lie back on the yacht’s extra-wide foredeck sunpad and watch the latest blockbuster on a 140-inch screen with laser projection. Or, if you’re the lucky owner, stargaze from your private terrace tucked away in the bow, just steps from the full-beam main-deck master suite, with atrium-style glass sliding doors. One of the best innovations here is the wide, uninterrupted walkway around the entire top deck, which provides safe, easy access from the flybridge to the forward entertaining space. With its twin 2,600 hp V16 MTU diesels, top speed is an impressive 29 knots. Priced from about $10.5 million.</p>

<p>For its brand-new Grande 26M compact superyacht, Italian builder Azimut has gone extra wide to create massive interior and exterior spaces. Spatial highlights include a full-width flybridge that’s almost 20 feet across and close to 40 feet long, and a foredeck entertaining area that seems more like an outdoor patio. The Alberto Mancini-styled go-fast cruiser is crammed with space-enhancing innovations, such as a teak-decked garage door that, at the touch of a button, hinges upwards to extend the rear cockpit by almost five feet. <p>As we said during our <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/on-superyacht-breaks-all-the-rules-1234606462/">2021 tour</a> of Britain’s Princess Yachts’ tri-deck X95 “When it comes to the polarizing, head-spinning design, there are no half-measures, no in-betweens. You either love it. Or loathe it.” But what those eye-popping lines hide is perhaps the most spacious 95-foot luxury cruiser in the category. Reckoned to be some 40 percent roomier than cruisers with the same length, the X95 has stretch-out accommodations for up to 10 in five cabins and living spaces that rival most apartments. The flybridge covers almost the entire length of the yacht. The 100 is also fast, with twin 1,990 hp MAN V12s delivering a top speed of 23 knots. Prices start at about $12 million.</p>

<p>This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. While it’s called the Triplex, there are actually four levels if you include the cozy upper sundeck with its outdoor kitchen, dining area and oversized sunpads. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley and an adjoining outdoor bar. Twin Volvo IPS1350s deliver a 16.5-knot top speed. Priced from $12 million.</p>

<p>In Italian, the word “navetta” translates to “little ship.” Which is a perfect description for Absolute’s new 75-foot fast cruiser. It’s an evolution of the strong-selling Navetta 73 but with nearly two feet of extra length. <p>Cross a spacious Miami high-rise penthouse with a Canyon Ranch spa and the result could be this new 96-foot superyacht from Italian builder Arcadia. Boasting a remarkable 4,300 square feet of total living space, there’s room for 12 guests and five crew. And the living spaces even expand, courtesy of fold-down terraces in the main salon and on the rear deck. But the yacht’s focus on wellness and healthy living sets it apart. <p>Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.</p>

inside custom line navetta 38 yacht with leather walls, raffia surfaces and ‘3D oak ceilings’

Explore the design of custom line navetta 38 yacht.

In January 2024, Custom Line, a yacht brand of Ferretti Group , introduced its recent made-to-measure model, Navetta 38. In May 2024, designboom went to see its real-life model in Venice , anchored near the Venice Art Biennale 2024’s Arsenale and the Central Pavilion (Giardini). Alberto Galassi, the yacht’s owner and the CEO of Ferretti Group, was on board, joined by one of the interior design team members, architect Chiara Massarani of ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, and the water vehicle’s exterior designer, architect Filippo Salvetti.

Stepping inside, air and light mingle and pass through, and everything is open: all the full-height, wall-to-wall sliding windows in the main deck; the sea-facing beach club at the tail of the yacht with its modular and plush lounge seats and beach chairs; the warm lighting, exposed and hidden under the surfaces; the rounded teak doors, a signature detail for the entire line; the cabinets, the compartments, and the motors. There’s almost 465 square meters of total surface area for the Custom Line Navetta 38 yacht, extended across three decks, with each floor retaining a sense of openness and lightness, most of the time quite literally.

3D oak ceilings curve around the edges and corners

Pay attention to the interiors, the neutral palettes that enlarge, brighten up, and texturize the space. In the salons, raffia, a natural fiber, cloaks the walls in their organic forms, only cut and sized to fit the fittings. They’re interrupted by the presence of oak , from the ceilings to the floors. Glance up, and the guests can see the most distinctive feature in the interiors of the Custom Line Navetta 38 yacht: the ‘3D oak ceilings,’ hollowed-out and styled like mini slabs of wood. The handcrafted light wood curves around the edges of ceilings and the corners of the entire interiors. As architect Chiara Massarani tells designboom during the tour , the design aim is to avoid sharp and pointed edges.

The interior is softened by the use of neutral colors such as beige and ivory. It must continue its promise of a gentle touch of design, underlined by the use of warm lighting throughout the Custom Line Navetta 38 yacht. ‘White light is too strong and not atmospheric,’ architect Chiara Massarani shares with designboom during the yacht viewing event. ‘Light in general is very important in a project. If you don’t use the correct lighting, it will have a completely different result in the project. For this yacht, we went for warm, soft lighting to bring the natural materials of the interior to light. We also used indirect and custom lighting to create some 3D effects and to make sure that the owner can adjust how they want the guests to see artworks within the yacht as the light changes direction.’

Leather walls and raffia surfaces in cabins and suites

On the main deck, there’s a passage leading to the master suite. In this lobby, there’s a staircase leading to the four guest cabins on the lower deck, two VIP and two guest cabins, all with their own double or twin beds, ample storage, closets, desks, and private bathrooms. Between these two spaces, two materials dominate the design landscape: natural leather and wood. Entering the master suite, the ivory raffia acts as the wallpaper of the entire bedroom. The 3D oak ceiling continues, and the use of oak and warm lighting permeate the bathroom too. And within this space, the natural leather begins, inviting itself as the star material for the master suite, staircase, and lower deck.

The headboard of the master bed? Leather. The surface of the desks that can be lifted up for extra storage? Crafted leather. The linings and edges of the cabinets? Lattice leather. The handrail of the teak staircase leading to the lower deck? Very leather, spiraling around the rail, looking like a luxurious candy cane. The walls on the lower deck? Definitely leather. Architect Chiara Massarani says it is an attempt to evoke the style of old-fashioned suitcases, a vintage traveler’s luggage turned into Custom Line Navetta 38 yacht design. Treated oak and teak grace the rest of the design elements of each deck in the yacht, filling out the spaces that raffia and leather would have cocooned in, acting as a complement to the overall neutral aesthetics.

Walking up the upper deck, measuring over 90 square meters, more spaces for gathering and relaxing await. At the front, there’s a lounge area with a 180-degree panoramic view and a full-beam modular couch with coffee tables, all designed by ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel. In front of it, the dining area can accommodate up to 10 people with a rectangular table. Slide the door-doubling-as-windows open, and the guests find themselves inside the sky lounge. Three sides of this space are dedicated to full-height landscape windows that also serve as sliding doors, allowing for a scenic view and more openness.

Further forward, the pilot’s helm station breaks free from the neutral palettes carpeting most of the interior. In here, along with the advanced technologies to help them maneuver the Custom Line Navetta 38 yacht, the surfaces and primary color are charcoal black to reduce the infrared rays by up to 65 percent. This model is fitted with two MAN units rated at 1,400 hp that can drive the yacht to a top speed of 15 knots, with a range of about 2,800 nautical miles at an economy cruising speed of 10 knots.

Just outside the pilot’s station, directly at the bow, a sunset lounge is positioned, still comprising the custom modular units for its party-sized seating and a solarium with sun pads. Underneath this lounge deck, there’s a hidden garage that can accommodate the owner’s tender, or a jet ski and two water toys. If not these watercrafts, they can use the vertical garage as a storage area. Up another level, the sundeck greets the guests, with a total surface area of 65 square meters and a length of 15 meters. Look up, and some frosted-like boxes are embedded onto the ceiling, sheltering the guests from the sun and helping reflect the outside sunlight.

Outside, Custom Line Navetta 38 has a mix of hushed-down colors. Architect Filippo Salvetti, a frequent collaborator of Custom Line and the yacht’s exterior designer, explains to designboom that the brand’s boats are always born white, in contrast with the gray of the windows. It is the base color, the usher of additional shades at the client’s discretion. Choosing this light hue has a long-term upside too. ‘Light gray does not heat up too much, a crucial factor for an object that lives in the middle of the sea under the sun,’ architect Filippo Salvetti shares with designboom.

It wasn’t easy to open the interior to the exterior of the yacht for the design team during the initial phase. As architect Filippo Salvetti tells designboom, the salon windows opening increasingly towards the sea can cause an imbalance between the dark volumes of the glass and the light of the fiberglass. ‘Working in this direction, maintaining the right balance, is one of the most complex challenges of our work. Another element that can strongly influence the design is the safety regulations. For example, the presence of large masses necessary for the immediate drainage of water requires, more than ever, large openings on the side gunwales,’ he adds.

They had to consider this feature during the initial phase, to integrate and mask it within the overall design so it would come out subtly. In the end, the exterior and interior design teams managed to balance what the guests can and can’t see, laying down good aesthetics, practical needs, and safety all on one deck. The exterior architect opens up to designboom too, saying that unlike its predecessors, the Navetta 38 yacht has a more modern surface treatment and volume, making it larger than its predecessor, the 37. ‘The boat has expanded in width, height, and length. This, combined with the new design, tends to make the vessel perceived as a more majestic and imposing object,’ architect Filippo Salvetti shares with designboom.

When the tour is over, Alberto Galassi sits down on a large sofa planted on the sundeck, surrounded by journalists and their smartphones, recording his words about the Custom Line Navetta 38 yacht; the Miuccia Prada quote that stayed with him (about luxury being vulgar); being friends with Domenico Dolce of Dolce & Gabbana; how involved his wife was in choosing the colors and non-colors for the interior of his yacht, hence the spectrum of around eight shades of beige and ivory; and the renaissance of ‘la piazzetta’ (‘a small square’) inside the yacht, on the lower deck.

‘There’s a connecting area in front of the four cabinets where all the guests, when they cruise with me, might need to dress up or change, to talk to others after the evening, to comment. It’s like typical Italians discussing in the piazza (square),’ Alberto Galassi says during the roundtable interview. The ‘always being in style’ bit runs through his Italian blood and culture, enough to make some dark surfaces around the Custom Line Navetta 38 yacht glazed and mirrored, what architect Chiara Massarani describes as ‘black mirror.’ They reflect anyone and anything, creating a seemingly optical illusion, even if what they do is bounce off the images they see.

They can make the space more expansive, the lighting warmer, and the people multiply in numbers. They also double as subtle and quick mirrors, some semi-clear panels for a swift outfit check before the night and party go on. They’re present in the upper deck too, the favorite space of the Ferretti Group CEO. ‘I’m not an air conditioning guy,’ he shares in the interview. ‘I don’t like to be closed in an area, in a beautiful area like on the sea, with just air conditioning. I like the Alfresco dining style with open air. On the upper deck, the sliding doors open wide, creating a huge terrace on three sides. That’s the best feature in the world.’

JL Designs & Interiors LLC offers complete interior design services. Our expertise spans from designing and laying out the space (the space plan), working with architectural plans, assisting with the lighting and cabinetry, recommending finish materials, advocating between you and the contractors, and assisting you with furnishings and window treatments.

Jeanette Loretz, principal of JL Designs & Interiors LLC, comes to Interior Design with a diverse and varied background that serves her well in approaching projects from many avenues. Jeanette received her Bachelor's Degree in Social Welfare and then became a certified paralegal before starting her Interior Design career over 12 years ago.

Attaining an Interior Designer certificate with honors from Canada College, Jeanette is certified in Residential Design, Commercial Design and Kitchen and Bath. She was the Past President of the California Peninsula Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and a member of the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association), a member of NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry), and is a Certified Interior Designer recognized by the State of California.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jeanette attended St. Francis High School in Mountain View - a school that she, her husband and three children all attended! She is a strong supporter of her community, and maintains active membership with St. Simon Church and the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce.

What's Jeanette's Design Style?

Clients often ask Jeanette about her design style. Is it Contemporary? Traditional? Transitional? French Country? Asian?

A good designer may have their favorite styles, but a trained Interior Design meets the needs and tastes of their individual clients. The most important skill a designer can bring to any project is an ability to listen. When an Interior Designer listens carefully to the preferences, how a space will function, and accentuate architectural features or attributes, then interiors will reflect a client's unique and lasting style.
