The YachtCharterFleet team has experienced the F1 Monaco Grand Prix first-hand, and we are here to provide you with the ultimate guide to chartering a luxury yacht at the event.

With luxury yachts at the heart of the racing action, hiring a superyacht for the Monaco Grand Prix is the most glamorous way to experience the world's most exciting and iconic F1 fixture.

However, many people have questions about the booking process. From when to book to where to berth, this article gives a run-down of the most commonly-asked questions and answers, complete with expert advice and tips on how to get the most from your Monaco Grand Prix superyacht experience.

How do I rent a yacht at the Monaco Grand Prix?

Yachts lined up at the Monaco Grand Prix

The first thing you will need to do is find a reputable yacht charter broker , who will act as a buffer between you and the yacht owner. They will be able to give you sound advice and information and will ultimately be responsible for organizing your grand prix yacht charter, right down to the very last detail.

Booking a yacht at the Formula One fixture is a complicated process, so be sure to find yourself a broker who has undertaken the procedure before. A broker with the necessary expertise and connections will ensure a smooth and straightforward superyacht experience at the F1 Monaco Grand Prix.

When do I need to book my Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter?

You will need to book your Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter up to eight months in advance if you are looking to secure a berth in Port Hercules. Demand for these berths is extremely high, so you will need to get in touch with your charter broker well ahead of time in order to start the planning process.

How can I book a berth with trackside views?

Yachts lined up at the Monaco Grand Prix

Many luxury yachts based in Monaco hold year-round berths in premium locations that overlook the racetrack. If track views are important to you, you should try to book a yacht that has already secured a desirable trackside berth. This will remove the hassle of trying to secure one such berth yourself.

How long can I rent a yacht for at the Monaco Grand Prix?

The minimum number of days you can rent a yacht over the Monaco Grand Prix is five days and it has to be between Wednesday and Sunday. This is because practice and qualifying sessions begin on Thursday, through to the main race on Sunday. Roads open to the public on Monday.

Superyachts cannot leave the marina throughout the duration of the grand prix. But, guests can easily extend their yacht charter and explore the glittering coastlines of the French Riviera when the racing draws to a close.

What can I do if I can’t berth in Port Hercules?

View of Monaco, France

There are 700 berths in Port Hercules, and they all fill up well in advance for the Monaco Grand Prix. If you are not able to secure one of these coveted slips, don’t panic; there are other places you can berth.

Tucked around the corner from Port Hercules is Port Fontvieille. Though smaller, demand for berths here is much less fierce as you will have to take a tender across to Port Hercules to watch the on-track action. It is recommended that you book a minimum of three months in advance to secure one of the 275 berths.

Alternatively, superyachts can anchor around the Bay of Monaco and, again, take a tender in to watch the racing. Of course, you will not need to book to anchor, but your yacht will not benefit from the facilities available at the marinas. For more details, read our article:  where to berth your yacht during the Monaco Grand Prix .

Please note, if you are coming to Monaco via tender to watch the races, you will need to hold a ticket that allows access to the F1 Monaco Grand Prix or have a hospitality package secured at one of the venues surrounding the track.

How to get on board your superyacht at the Monaco Grand Prix

Can I get off my yacht to watch the races?

As the streets of Monaco make up the grand prix circuit, much of Monte Carlo is closed off during practice and race sessions. At these times, when cars are on the track, access from the land to Port Hercules and vice versa is not possible.

Therefore, those watching the race from Port Hercules will need to ensure they get on board their superyacht before restrictions fall into place. For more information, please read our article in order to find out how to board your superyacht during the Monaco Grand Prix.

How to choose the best berth for the Monaco Grand Prix

Should I consider a Monaco Grand Prix yacht hospitality package?

If you do not want to charter a yacht privately, but would still like to step on board a superyacht, you can do so with the help of an F1 yacht hospitality package.

These are a cost-effective option for those who do not wish to book an entire yacht for 5 days and will entitle you access to a superyacht over the course of the races, as well as a host of other advantages including premium drinks, gourmet food and drink and live performances from international DJs. A Day On Board Our Yacht At The Monaco Grand Prix

It’s a day of refined tranquil luxury watching some of the most exciting sporting action on the planet, a day to look forward to and remember forever.

If you want glamour, prestige and an unbeatable adrenalin rush, this has to be the best there is – watching the Monaco Grand Prix from a luxury yacht that’s close enough to the action you can virtually feel the whoosh of air as the cars race by at 140mph. You’ll certainly hear the boom of their awe-inspiring power!

Delicious food and drinks served on board complete the millionaire feel of this day. From local French wines to fresh juice and then there’s the amazing food… mouthwatering lobster, quality meats, a variety of excellent cheeses. You won’t want to ever leave the yacht.

Monaco Hospitality Packages at the Grand Prix

First raced in 1929, the Monaco Grand Prix is regarded as the most eminent and esteemed car race in the world. Taking place in May on the Circuit de Monaco, household names such as Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso will drive fast and hard in their Formula One (the highest class of single-seat auto racing) sleek machines.

All the racing-car action is on a slender course created around Monaco’s streets – that mean it’s a treacherous place to race. Only the very best high-speed drivers with their wits and skill fully about them can handle its many twists, turns and the famous tunnel.

trackside yachts

Rocket Hospitality’s yacht hospitality excitement starts at Fontvielle Harbour, the next bay from Monaco’s Port Hercules harbour. Keep an eye out here for famous Fontvielle residents such as former Wimbledon tennis champions Björn Borg and Boris Becker; and racing driver such as David Coulthard.

At 8.30am, you’ll make the 10-minute picturesque trip on a RIB lightweight high-performance boat to the harbour in Monaco where some of the most stunning yachts around are moored. A champagne breakfast greets guests to an amazing luxury yacht moored in a prime location in Monaco harbour (and with excellent views of the huge screens that show the build-up, entire race and celebrations afterwards).

Moored in two great locations, Rocket’s yachts view either the super-fast straight between Chicane du Port and Tabac, which is a tricky tight corner taken at about 120mph; or between Tabac and Piscine, a fast left-right section of the course.

There’s a complimentary bar throughout, delicious full gourmet lunch served on board, and friendly bilingual staff on hand to assist with anything to make the day go wonderfully. After the race has been won, at around 5pm it’s either time to return by the RIB boat to Fontvielle Harbour or get off the yacht to explore Monaco from there on foot.

It’s an easy enough place to get around. Neatly tucked away into less than a square mile, the world’s second-smallest country (after Vatican City) officially has a 38,500 population, but those numbers are greatly boosted by tourists who are drawn to Monaco’s splendour. It makes the nightlife absolutely fantastic and the streets are filled with happy party people.

Situated in the French Riviera, surrounded by a lovely landscape and facing into the tantalising turquoise Mediterranean Sea, Monaco enjoys a wonderfully warm climate (and for residents there’s also the attraction of paying no income tax!). Unsurprisingly there’s a fantastic choice of quality places to eat and a wide range of impressive architecture, including the well-known Monte Carlo Casino.

You could even have the chance of becoming one of those super-wealthy Monaco residents if you pay it a visit! Give it a go, you never know…

The yacht-spotter's guide to the F1 Monaco Grand Prix

Every year, Monaco’s Grand Prix pulls in some of the fleet’s finest superyachts for a weekend of adrenaline-fuelled F1 action and A-lister events in the heart of the principality. Yachts moored stern to the circuit have a premium vantage point over the cars tearing around the track, while superyachts at anchor can enjoy all the Formula One buzz with the added benefit of privacy and seclusion.

BOAT takes a closer look at the superyachts spotted near the event...

Renaissance

Length : 111.9m Builder : Freire

Renaissance is the largest private yacht built in Spain and one of the world's most expensive charter yachts . Which is quite the feat for Freire, a commercial shipyard that has built only one private yacht in the past. With 7,200GT to play with, her list of amenities include a sushi bar, a dedicated hair and beauty salon, a ballet bar with a mirror for stretching and two cinemas – one indoor, one outdoor. The owner's deck is described as "palatial" and comes with its own a media room, a lounge with bar and dining and a private terrace with a Jacuzzi for six.

Length : 52.1m Builder : Sanlorenzo

Spotted pulling into port with a Bugatti on the aft, Seven Sins is the perfect yacht for soaking up the Formula One action. She is part of Sanlorenzo's hugely successful 52Steel series, with features including a glass-bottomed pool on the aft that floods the beach club below with light. Her palatial interior design offers plenty of space for kicking back and watching the races in a more relaxed setting and her sharp Officina Italiana Design exterior is sure to attract attention in Monaco harbour.

Length : 90m Builder : Benetti

Lionheart was launched in 2016 as the shipyard's largest build to date, though she was surpassed by the 107-metre Mar (ex Lana ) four years later. She was the third yacht to be ordered from Benetti by the same owner, Sir Philip Green. While her curvy exterior and private balconies will be visible to those visiting Port Hercule this weekend, interiors have always been shrouded in secrecy. It is known that  Stefano Natucci  collaborated with Benetti on the exterior design and Green & Mingarelli Design  is responsible for the interior design.

Fountainhead

Length : 87.8m   Builder : Feadship

Created with family use in mind, Fountainhead features a recreation room and library that can be converted into cabins to supplement the six existing guest cabins and owner's suite. She was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and Sinot Yacht Design , though "a signature blend of art, antiques and aesthetics" by Belgian artist Axel Vervoordt are also displayed throughout.  Leisure highlights include a fully-equipped gym with health club, a contra-flow swimming pool and a tender garage that houses wave runners, kayaks, surfboard and diving equipment, among others. The superyacht is named after the famous novel by Ayn Rand.

Coral Ocean

Length : 72.6m Builder : Lürssen

A World Superyacht Award winner, Coral Ocean earned the judges' commendation following a sensitive, multi-million refit that converted the heritage vessel into a successful charter platform. All deck spaces were upgraded, including a reimagined sundeck that now houses a glass-sided spa pool, sunbathing and observation deck and a central deckhouse with a television lounge, dining area and bar. Coral Ocean was one of the largest launches of 1994 and her secrecy for the first two decades of her life solidified her as an icon for the German shipyard. She is owned by Australian garbage waste disposal giant Ian Malouf.

Length : 72m   Builder : Lürssen

Delivered in 2006, Titania  (ex Apoise ) was put up for auction by her owner in 2010 and was snapped up for €33.75 million – roughly half the estimated value – by Phones4U tycoon John Caudwell. He then went on to refit, lengthen and rename the superyacht, which he discusses in an exclusive interview with BOAT International . Designed by Espen Øino and Francois Zuretti , the Lürssen was the star yacht in season six of The Crown and is a popular charter yacht. No wonder, as she sports a beach club that can be converted into a nightclub, an onboard masseuse and beautician and an impressive array of watersports – including a waterpark and a 12.7-metre slide.

Length : 70m Builder : Royal Denship

Force Blue first hit the water in 2002 as the 63.3-metre Big Roi , a trawler-style expedition yacht that has since been refitted to varying degrees. The most recent work was done at Lusben in 2022 and involved a seven-metre stern extension to allow for a large, wrap-around swim platform. The main deck was extended in the process as well. Design highlights include a black-tiled spa (with heated massage table), a cinema, a barbecue and dining area that turns into a disco and a dining room that doubles as a conference space. An elevator serves all decks.

Length : 67.5m Builder : Icon Yachts

The flagship of the Dutch shipyard, Loon (ex Icon ) is now anchored in Port Hercule where she is likely to cause another social media sensation . She was delivered in 2010 to a design by RWD , with clean, contemporary interiors by Studio Linse . A raised main deck pool is one of her many highlights with two panels of glass that filter natural light into the beach club below. A bar, gym, massage room and sauna are also found at this level. Loon was sold to a new owner in April 2023, after which she joined the charter fleet with IYC .

Length : 66m   Builder : Oceanco

AHS has undergone numerous name changes (she was sold and renamed mostly recently in January ) but started life as Dilbar in 2005. A successful charter yacht, she can be easily distinguished in port by her classic canoe stern. An interior by the late Alberto Pinto provides accommodation across eight cabins, including a full-beam owner's suite with its own lounge and adjoining private office. Other highlights include an outdoor cinema, a beamy sundeck with 19,000-litre pool and a helipad that transforms into a sun lounge.

Length : 49.9m Builder : Zepter

The Croatian yard's first superyacht offering, JoyMe is usually berthed in Cap d’Ail but has been sighted in Monaco for the past two Grands Prix. She’s one of the most recognisable yachts at the event, with her custom red and white exterior and unusual eye motif – said to be the eyes of the commissioning owner’s daughter. Leisure highlights include a Pop Art-inspired interior by  Marijana Radovic , a sundeck with a 3.5-metre Jacuzzi and a lower deck arranged with a gym, Finnish sauna and Hammam spa with sea views. Accommodation is across five cabins, including the "VIP deck" owner's cabin which has a walk-in bathroom, lounge and private sunbathing platform on the bow.

Length : 45.2m Builder : Royal Hakvoort

The most recent delivery on the list, Milele is one of this year's World Superyacht Award winners . According to the judges, she stood out thanks to her "incredible build quality” and surprising spaces on board. Most notable of these is the innovative foredeck garage, which stores a submarine and crane, and has a full entertainment suite with a large television screen built into its hatch. She was designed inside and out by Omega Architects with an efficient hull design by Van Oossanen Naval Architects .

Monaco Grand Prix Shook by Huge Crash After Malfunction – Two People Almost Hit

Alex harrington | 2 hours ago.

monaco grand prix from yacht

The Monaco Grand Prix, known for its opulence and historic racing, took a dramatic turn when a malfunctioning speedboat nearly struck pedestrians. As the F1 world focused on intense qualifying rounds, the unexpected incident took the shine away from the unlucky people involved.

During the F1 qualifying sessions, an unmanned speedboat in the luxurious "Billionaires' Row" area lost control, causing chaos in the harbor. It collided with a stationary yacht and a small dingy before mounting the dock jetty, narrowly missing pedestrians. The crash, captured in viral social media footage, showed the drama unfold.

While the harbor incident was a stark distraction, the track itself was not without drama. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc dominated the qualifying rounds, snapping Max Verstappen’s streak of pole positions with a blistering lap time of 1:10.270. This performance not only placed him at the pole but also positioned him as a potential first Monegasque to win the Monaco GP since 1931. The street circuit, known for its tight and unforgiving turns, saw significant driving from both rookies and seasoned drivers. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri emerged as a surprise contender, securing the second position on the starting grid, followed by Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris who showcased the competitive prowess of Ferrari and McLaren, both sat on the second row.

On the other hand, championship leader Max Verstappen faced setbacks after colliding with a wall during a critical moment in the qualifying sessions, which led him to start from P6. His incident, marked by his own admission of error, underscored setup issues that Red Bull have been grappling with all weekend so far.

Meanwhile, Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton secured P6 and P7, respectively, though Hamilton conveyed disappointment, pointing to potential shown in practice sessions that did not translate into qualifying success. Among other top ten qualifiers were Yuki Tsunoda, Daniel Ricciardo, Alex Albon, and Pierre Gasly. Notably, Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso suffered in the qualifying rounds, failing to make significant advancements and starting far down the grid.

Monaco Grand Prix: Everything you need to know about the 70th edition

As Formula One gears up for round eight this weekend in Monaco -- the 'jewel' on the F1 calendar -- ESPN breaks down everything you need to know about the weekend's grand prix.

Can Monégasque Charles Leclerc lift the 'curse'?

Would a different format for the Monaco Grand Prix be more appealing for fans? Lewis Hamilton has proposed the idea .

Can Max Verstappen go one better and break Ayrton Senna's qualifying record with a ninth pole position in succession? At last week's Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Verstappen matched the record with eight since Abu Dhabi in 2023.

Could Verstappen win the championship in a different car? Listen to ESPN's F1 podcast Unlapped . Plus Monaco GP preview.

Where is the best place in Monaco to watch the iconic grand prix? Laurence Edmondson went to find out.

Plus, McLaren has unveiled the green, yellow and blue livery it will run this weekend as a tribute to Ayrton Senna 30 years after he died in May, 1994.

Circuit stats

Ayrton Senna has the record for most pole positions at Monaco (five), and race wins (six). Of the current F1 grid, Daniel Ricciardo (2018), Sergio Perez (2022), Lewis Hamilton (2008, 2016, 2019) and championship leader Max Verstappen (2021, 2023) have all won here previously.

Distance: 3.337km

Overtakes completed in 2023: 36

Lap record: 1:12.909, Lewis Hamilton (2021).

This year is the 70th edition of the iconic race. The first was in 1950, and since 1955, the grand prix has never been off the F1 calendar for any reason other than the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

Laurence Edmondson explains why the qualifying session for the Monaco Grand Prix will be more entertaining than the race.

What happened last year?

For Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin, the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix was the big 'what if?'.

A mid-race rainstorm presented a golden opportunity for Alonso to sneak ahead of Max Verstappen and secure his first win since the 2012 season.

When he made his pit stop the heavens were just about to open, but with the track still largely dry at the time Aston Martin fitted slick tyres to his car rather than wets, meaning he had to pit again a lap later when the rain intensified.

As was the case for most of the 2023 season, Verstappen and Red Bull made all the right calls to win the race ahead of Alonso and Alpine's Esteban Ocon in third.

Who's going to win this year?

After Lando Norris' victory in Miami and near-victory one week ago in Imola, Verstappen is no longer the clear cut answer to this question.

Both McLarens will likely be in contention, but there's a growing school of thought that Monaco might suit Ferrari more.

For that reason, ESPN is backing Charles Leclerc to lift the 'curse' that has hung over his poor form at his home race and take a memorable victory.

And what for weather? Looking ahead from Thursday, the forecast looks to be to be clear and settled with temperatures around 20°C -- ideal for watching from a yacht.

How the championships look

Max Verstappen still leads the drivers' championship, but his margin has narrowed to 48 points ahead of Charles Leclerc, who can close the gap further with a win at his home race on Sunday.

Red Bull lead the constructors' by 56 points over Ferrari, with McLaren needing a few more race wins to bridge that 58-point gap to second place.

How the super rich party at the Monaco Grand Prix

T he Monaco Grand Prix gets underway this weekend in Monte Carlo with its heady combination of glamor and adrenaline, not only for the tens of thousands who descend on the pristine principality, but for the millions watching across the world.

Even those who are typically indifferent to motorsports can find themselves enraptured, or at least intrigued, by the sheer spectacle of Formula One cars hurtling along the country’s winding streets.

It is also where you will find celebrities happily jostling their way through the crowds and cameras. “It is unlike anything I have ever been to, it is electric,” exclaimed Spider-Man actor Tom Holland while walking last year’s grid.

And of course, there is plenty of wealth on display.

Monaco is nicknamed “the billionaires’ playground” for good reason. Here, designer stores, supercars, multi-million-dollar yachts and astronomically priced restaurants are ‘la norme’, but during the three-day Grand Prix, the eye-watering ostentation increases three-fold.

When demand is high and options are limited, it is all to play for among the world’s wealthiest who are keen to revel in the race’s iconic location and party ‘til dawn.

If they are not using their own superyacht as a base, they might book into a private villa on the Côte d’Azur or check-in to Fairmont Hotel, Hôtel Hermitage or Hôtel de Paris in Monte Carlo itself.

A pioneer of Grand Prix party culture

Of course, it is not only about finding the finest suites to rest your head, but the premium spots for dining and clubbing, whether it is the top table at Cipriani, Sass Café or Café de Paris or the best booth at exclusive night spots such as Jimmy’z or Amber Lounge.

The latter has the distinction of being the go-to destination for the F1 fraternity, including Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, while previous guests have included Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Minogue and Prince Albert of Monaco.

Established in 2003 by former racing driver Eddie Irvine’s sister Sonia as a “post-race destination” for drivers and VIP guests, Amber Lounge is regarded a pioneer of the Grand Prix party culture.

Notably, it will be marking its 20-year milestone (there was a year off during Covid) as “the most exclusive party in the world” with panache over the Monaco weekend with three nights of events costing just over €1.5m ($1.6m) to produce.

There will be after parties at an Amber Lounge beach club on the terrace of Le Meridien Beach Plaza (the only hotel in Monte Carlo with its own private beach), as well as VIP viewing of the race from aboard a 108ft superyacht moored just feet from the circuit’s famous Tabac corner.

“The size of the yacht also means we are as close to the action as you can get, unlike the larger yachts that are pulled back (from the coast). It also feels more intimate and exclusive on board. We have a lot of repeat clients (typically from the US, UK and Middle East) who want to network and build relationships,” said Lauren Green, Managing Director of Amber Lounge who oversees logistics of the three-day pop-up event in Monaco, as well as other F1 locations including Singapore, Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi.

Unsurprisingly, a ticket to one of the most coveted trackside spots does not come cheap.

A one-day VIP viewing package for the race itself on Sunday costs €3,500 ($3,800) per person — and the 65 available tickets sold out within two weeks of going on sale in May 2023.

While the dress code is ‘Riviera chic,’ shoes, however expensive, must be discarded on embarking so as not to ruin the yacht’s teak decking. Tickets include free-flowing beverages, including champagne, wine and signature cocktails, as well as food, a DJ and dancers before tenders return to shore at 6.30pm.

‘The center of the universe for a weekend’

At the club’s after parties held over the race weekend, a small army of waiting staff serve ever-flowing drinks for a 1000 strong crowd on Saturday and Sunday nights. On arrival, guests ring a bell and a gloved hand appears through a flower wall proffering a glass of champagne. Attendees have paid anything from €600 ($650) for entry to the afterparty on Saturday (the F1 qualifying day) to €800 ($870) on the Sunday (race day) in the hope they can party alongside drivers, celebrities and guests of high net worth, away from the public gaze.

For €40,000 ($43,400), partygoers can book what’s known as a “diamond table package” for 10 people — a prime table with unobstructed views of the stage and DJ booth (Fatman Scoop and Jax Jones are the acts for 2024), as well as cirqus-themed performances, and Methuselahs of champagne (6-liters) and premium vodka. Add an extra €10,000 ($10,800) on for a Salmanazar — a nine-liter bottle of champagne that requires a team of four to carry it to the table, or €20,000 ($21,600) for a 12-liter Balthazar-sized bottle.

The top-tier tables also have their own “hosts,” who act as a concierge; liaising with VIPs’ assistants or drivers to ensure guests can be greeted and escorted along the black carpet without having to queue.

Amber Lounge might be one of the most exclusive and expensive events taking place during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, but Monte Carlo itself is a veritable party hub. It’s common for champagne glasses and bottles to be cleared from the track from the previous night’s revelry ahead of that day’s qualifying or race sessions.

“The Côte d’Azur is one of the truly exceptional global destinations, and Monaco is at the heart of it. The scenery, the sophistication, and the opulence are unmatched,” said Bruce Bundrant, Senior Vice President of Business Development for rEvolution, a global sports marketing agency who lived in Monaco for three years as Commercial Director for AS Monaco FC.

“As a former resident, I can tell you there are two sides to the F1 Grand Prix arriving in Monaco. On one side, your town is now the center of the universe for a weekend where the top 1% of the 1% from all over the world arrive and engage in outrageous parties and events on yachts, at luxury hotels suites, and in hilltop mansions,” Bundrant explained.

“On the other, it’s the hybrid of the arrival of a hurricane and New Year’s Eve. A week out from the race, grocery store shelves are emptied as locals know it’s impossible to move around the principality when the F1 circus is in town. During the Grand Prix, your quiet, regular neighborhood bar has a line around the corner, charges a $100 cover charge, and a drink that typically costs $20 will be $50. But it’s a truly unforgettable weekend, with an unreplicable buzz and energy. Sure, it’s expensive, but come the Monday, things are back to normal.”

As normal as it can ever be in a place as excessive as Monaco. As the jet set move onto their next port of call, and the racetrack is dismantled, so too is the Amber Lounge club as preparations continue for their next F1 event, which will be Singapore in September.

“There is no rest at Amber Lounge,” Green quipped. “Just a lot of adrenaline. And a lot of coffee.”

The Limitations, and Thrills, of the Monaco Grand Prix

The narrow track and large cars hinder overtaking, but, oh boy, do those tight roads make qualifying hair-raising.

A view of the Monaco Grand Prix with racecars on the street next to a harbor filled with boats.

By Ian Parkes

Ask a Grand Prix driver whether Monaco is worthy of its place on the Formula 1 calendar, and the answer will usually be yes.

That’s even though the Grand Prix can often be less than thrilling. The track is so narrow and the cars so big that drivers rarely can pass, or overtake, each other. In the Formula E race there in April, drivers were able to overtake almost 200 times in their smaller cars. In last year’s Grand Prix there were 22 overtakes, which can make the race processional.

Compared with 30 years ago, cars are about three feet longer and 600 pounds heavier, making them difficult to maneuver around the narrow streets of Monaco. Still, the race has a mystique.

“For me, Monaco is the most iconic race of the season,” Charles Leclerc of Ferrari said. “Obviously, I’m Monégasque, so I’m biased, but it’s the race that made me dream of becoming a Formula 1 driver.

“The qualifying effort on Saturday is incredible. None of the racetracks come close to what we feel on that qualifying lap, and how precise you need to be, how brave you need to be. It’s something I really enjoy as a driver.”

Monaco has history. This weekend’s Grand Prix marks the 95th anniversary of its first race, in 1929. Its layout, a circuit described by Nelson Piquet, a three-time champion in the 1980s, as “like riding a bicycle around your living room,” has altered little over time.

The configuration has 19 corners over about two miles. Reaching speeds up to 180 miles per hour, drivers completing a perfect qualifying lap, in which they are on the track alone, racing against the clock, is the ultimate challenge.

“As a driver, for me, qualifying in Monaco is the most exciting and the biggest rush of adrenaline of the whole season,” Oscar Piastri, a McLaren driver, said. “Trying to get it right around there and brush the walls, that’s one of the most exciting things you can do in a racecar.”

The race itself is still a challenge. Over 78 laps, with almost 1,500 corners, there is no respite. To win in Monaco, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, a seven-time champion, said in 2010 that “the driver with the biggest talent” and guts should generally do well, “if he has the car.”

The problem with Monaco is there is no room to expand the track to aid overtaking. Ideas to alter it have been discussed over the years, but there have been no changes.

So the variables for overtaking are confined to strategy, an accident or rain, which has often created a spectacle that has affected strategy and resulted in accidents.

“Can it be better in terms of overtaking on a Sunday? Yes,” Leclerc said. He has qualified on pole position twice but failed to win his home race. “However, I think it’s more down to the cars getting heavier and bigger throughout the years, which I’m sure once this is tackled, hopefully soon, then we’ll have better racing on Sunday in Monaco.”

Michel Boeri, president of the Automobile Club de Monaco, the promoters of the Grand Prix, said that despite the near century-old heritage of the race, it was unique.

“From the start, in 1929, we didn’t have a choice but to do things differently because of the topography of our tiny 700-year-old principality, situated between the mountains on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other,” Boeri said in an interview. “Monaco is half the size of New York’s Central Park.

“But where else can you race around buildings and yachts at 180 miles per hour, on streets where the speed limit is 30? It’s a challenge and exciting for the drivers, and it’s an unforgettable experience for the spectators who get to watch the cars up close.”

In 2021, a Formula 1 survey of 167,000 people from 187 countries, conducted by the research company Nielsen, in partnership with the Motorsport Network, highlighted Monaco’s popularity, emerging as the fan favorite. That was no surprise to Boeri.

“When people around the world think of golf, they think of the Masters in Augusta,” he said. “When they think of tennis, it’s Wimbledon. When it comes to Formula 1, it’s Monaco that comes to mind.

“The Monaco Grand Prix is a classic, and like good wine, it takes years to become a classic. For the fans, it is the unmissable race of the F1 calendar.”

Monaco may lean on its history, but it has to remain relevant to Formula 1. The arrival of the Las Vegas and Miami Grands Prix in recent years, and the spectacular nature of those events, has placed new demands on the automobile club to keep pace.

“We keep investing year after year,” Boeri said. “We have an international standard control tower, new pits, a new princely lodge for the podium ceremony, the track is resurfaced every three years, and this year we’ll be inaugurating additional V.I.P. facilities at the entrance of the pit lane with a 360-degree view of the circuit.”

“I read the promoters of the Las Vegas Grand Prix said they envisioned their event as the Monaco of North America,” Boeri said. “That made us happy.

“We are also happy to see new events around the world on the F1 calendar. New promoters sometimes call us to ask for advice on how to organize a Grand Prix in their city, so we gladly share our expertise, just like we look at what is done elsewhere to stay up-to-date.”

The lack of overtaking is an unavoidable problem at Monaco. Still, Boeri said, “I would say that when there is an overtake, it is always a memorable moment. It takes skill and bravery to overtake around Monaco in Formula 1.”

At Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello, Italy, the cars dating from Alain Prost, who drove for the team in 1990-91, are displayed. Frédéric Vasseur, the Ferrari team principal, said the difference in size, from then to now, was considerable and affected racing.

“For me, qualifying at Monaco is the most exciting lap of the season, but we can’t change it, we can’t try to improve it to help with overtaking,” he said in an interview. “For sure, at some stage, a lot of the historic tracks, like Monaco, Budapest, will become too small. It’s for another discussion, but I think we have to go back to more agile cars.”

Vasseur said Monaco “is still worthy of its place on the calendar.”

Daniel Ricciardo, a Visa Cash App RB driver, offered a different perspective as to why Monaco is important.

“As a driver, being in Monaco, you feel like a superstar,” he said. “It’s the one place where you think, ‘I’m doing something pretty awesome.’ It’s a place where you really appreciate the job you have.

“There is an aura that surrounds the event, the race, and qualifying in Monaco is one of the most intense feelings we get as a driver. Sunday is maybe a little different, it’s a complete change of tempo. Sunday isn’t perfect by any means, but the event on Saturday still gives it enough.”

In 2022 , the automobile club signed a three-year extension to continue to host the race. In 2025, it will have to prove itself again.

Boeri said he was confident that the club would sign a new contract.

“What would be the interest for both parties to refuse a new deal for the future? It would be a waste for F1, for us and the fans.”
