The concept

Involved in the design of highly innovative racing multihulls since 1980 and since 2001 in the brokerage of catamarans, sailing boats and motoryachts, the navigator Marc Pajot, Olympic medallist, winner of the 1982 Route du Rhum and twice semi-finalist in the America's Cup, presents a radically innovative catamaran yacht project. The result of the collaboration of a team of specialists, the Pajot Custom yachts 90' catamaran is a concentrate of new and coordinated concepts. These innovations combined with proven solutions allow this multihull platform to have the functions and attributes of a yacht.

The SWCAT90 concept was developed in collaboration with our long-term partner Nauta Design, who were responsible for the interior and exterior design and styling. Berret-Racoupeau, a catamaran specialist design firm based in La Rochelle, was responsible for the naval architecture. Southern Wind Shipyard has been recognized as the preeminent builder of 27-35m composite sailing yachts that combine performance with comfort and reliability. These elements have become part of the DNA of every SWS yacht. In response to a demand for greater levels of comfort without compromising on performance, the shipyard has developed a new sailing catamaran project that embodies and enhances these principles.

The SWCAT90 superyacht catamaran has been developed as a versatile platform that can be tailored to an owner’s wishes and allows for a high level of customization. Whether an owner’s priorities are incredible performance, eco-friendly sustainability, or to have the perfect luxury charter yacht, the SWCAT90 can be adapted and enhanced to meet expectations.

A TRUE SUPERYACHT CATAMARAN

The space and volume available on a sailing catamaran of this scale is comparable to a 39m monohull. With 171m 2 of interior floorspace, the SWCAT90 features a vast saloon area of 45m 2 with 360° panoramic views. The deck space, including the flybridge and two cockpits, is an impressive 207m 2 , an increase of 50% when compared to a similarly sized monohull. The interior layout offers four guest cabins plus two or three crew cabins, with the crew quarters separated from the luxury guest areas to allow for maximum privacy.

SAIL PLAN OPTIONS

Berret-Racoupeau brought their knowledge and expertise to this partnership. Performance was high on our list of priorities, ensuring not only boat speed but a superyacht catamaran that appeals to the senses and is a pleasure to sail. Two sail plan options have been developed to appeal to the varying expectations of potential owners. For the appendages high-efficiency curved daggerboards with T-rudders offer an increase in boat speed, while improving comfort by reducing pitching in rough conditions.The hulls, bridge deck and superstructure will be constructed in carbon fibre sandwich, utilising the specialized infusion technique. The specification and equipment selection for this SWCAT90 are in line with the highest superyacht catamaran standards and chosen with the environment in mind.

About Luxury Sailing Catamaran ORION: Luxury sailing catamaran Orion is a custom built superyacht, a rare breed indeed.  She has all the pedigree that one could wish from the track record of her designers, the universal respect for her builder, and the knowledge and experience of her owner. She is absolutely ready for any adventure around the Caribbean and during special occasions in other luxury sailing holiday spots. The yacht was last refitted in 2013 and as yacht charter boat designed like a synthesis of from all of Catana's knowledge you can rest assured that if you book this yacht, you are in for a special experience Exterior: The yachts design profits from Catana’s Carbon Infusion technology, the Twaron Impact process and a number of latest Catana innovations.  The custom units designed and built by the Catana shipyard provide all charter guest with extremely comfortable and safe surroundings. The headroom, under the nacelle, which is always a great surprised, and the length of the two hulls give the ORION a remarkable stability on the water.  And while comfort is important, the ORION also has all the assets to face the most extreme sailing conditions. The curved dagger boards, unique offering on all Catana yachts, make it possible for the boat to glide downwind and for the helmsman to enjoy the sensations previously reserved to professional navigators. They are also incredibly efficient in sailing upwind and avoid heavy weather.  The interior panelling and cabinetry is built in the finest French cherrywood and almost all of this impeccable carpentry is foam cored for lightweight strength and stability. Interior: Everything on board is conceived to make the life easy and to allow the passengers to devote themselves to the joy of speed on the water during long crossings.  The customised furniture and panoramic views make moving on board and navigation very comfortable. The salon being exceptionally spacious, the cabins large and isolated from any disturbing noise thanks to the insulation system and the height on the water, make this super yacht one of the best sailing catamarans on the yacht charter market today.  ORION is a very light and airy yacht with 20 opening hull ports and 12 opening hatches and windows with screens and blinds, in addition to the huge sliding doors to the cockpit. Dining aboard ORION is an experience for all the senses - the ultimate expression of that experience is chef’s artful presentation influenced by cuisines enjoyed during her world travels.  She says of her cooking: “My culinary style is inspired by world travels, 200,000 sea miles, and my love of whole foods. I like to cook using fresh produce; opting for local spray-free, organic and free range when available.”  Alison was inspired by cuisines and learned to cook in countries as varied as Mexico, India, Italy, Thailand, The Pacific Islands, the Mediterranean, California fusion, and Japanese Sushi... to name a few.  She is a self-taught chef with over 30 years’ experience. Alison loves to learn from those she cooks with and for who she cooks.  And as she has  catered for people desiring to lose weight, vegetarians, vegans, raw foodies, no fat cholesterol-free heart patients, diabetics and kids  - -  and meat eaters,  you can be sure that whatever you like, it’s her pleasure to prepare it for you. Luxury crewed charter yacht ORION is fully air conditioned throughout. This is a non-smoking vessel. ORION´s experienced super yacht charter crew of up to 5 including the captain Scott Fratcher have a separate head and shower but share companionway with the guests. Super Yacht TENDER: Mega yacht ORION has a 4.5m tender on board with a 90hp engine Super Yacht itineraries: Luxury sailing catamaran ORION will normally cruise around the East Caribbean. Usual sailing grounds cover the British Virgin Islands and the rest of Leeward islands including Anguilla, St Martin, St Barths and Antigua and Barbuda.  On occasion the yacht will gladly accept one way charters or direct charters in or around Windward Islands including Grenadines.

Luxury sailing yacht ORION (27.4m/90’) is a CATANA built super sail cat, launched in 2008 and refitted in 2013.  She accommodates up to 8+1 charter guests sleeping in 1 Owner appartment, 1 x King and 1 x VIP cabins, all of which are en suite.  There are at least 4 super yacht crew members on board at any time.  This charter yacht mainly cruises at speeds of around 9kn.  ORION is normally offered for luxury yacht charter within the EAST Caribbean Islands, between BVI’s and the Grenadines.   Thanks to hear twin engines totalling 430hp, and impressive sail area, during the right sea and wind conditions, she can reach maximum speeds of around 18kn while cruising at speeds of around 9kn.  She is a perfect owner yacht whose best features are an enormous owners apartment with 2 cabins and large family area, great safety when sailing at high winds and good sailing performance.

Alva Yachts begins construction on Ocean Eco 90 with Oceanwings

German shipyard ALVA Yachts has announced that the second unit in its flagship 27.5-metre Ocean Eco 90 catamaran series has now begun construction and is scheduled to splash next year.

The Ocean Eco 90 H2 is available with a fully electric drive and a hydrogen fuel cell and will be powered by two performance electric motors connected to a 500-plus kilowatt battery pack, supplemented by 200 square metres of solar panels. In a departure from the first model, the Ocean Eco 90 H2 will be fitted with Ayro's Oceanwings© wind propulsion system, with attached wind sensors for optimised performance. 

The new vessel has a beam of 14 metres and features an open concept across its flybridge, helm station and skylounge, complete with a cocktail bar and Jacuzzi on the top deck. The yacht will also offer a large beach club, twin bathing platforms and al fresco seating on the aft deck.

Accommodations are organised within a generous master suite with a private study, two doubles and a twin cabin, all of which come with ensuite bathroom facilities. A further two single rooms located in the portside hull offer additional accommodations perfect for housing crew members on board.

Other interior highlights include an enclosed "penthouse-style" main saloon, a large dining table for ten guests situated forward and a galley with an island and accompanying bar stools.

The Ocean Eco 90 H2 is envisioned with a choice of either two 250 or 248-kilowatt electric motors, powering the yacht to a top speed of 16 knots and a variable cruising speed of seven to 12 knots.

"What is special about this project is certainly the leap that we are making in technology," said CEO of Alva Yachts Holger Henn. "A superyacht that can operate without fossil fuel is something we could only dream of. But with the help of strong partners and a lot of effort from the ALVA team, we want to show what is possible in boat building today.”

According to Alva Yachts, the new yacht is slated to arrive on the water in the latter half of 2024, joining the first Ocean Eco 90 in build.

The 27.50m PAJOT CUSTOM ECO YACHT 90’ is the new addition to innovating line of Eco-Yacht 115’ and 145’ hybrid catamarans, developed by Pajot Custom Yachts and the Italian shipyard Wider. This new multihull appeared in response of the growing demand for the sustainable yachts.

The PAJOT CUSTOM ECO YACHT 90 repeats many of her bigger allies features. Exterior details include aluminium built, the cutting-edge design for hulls, efficient sail layout with boomless main sail, retractable center board, allowing shallow draft.

Hybrid power system comprises extensive use of solar panels (50m2) combined with new generation electric propulsion by in-house Wider Management System (WMS). No engine noise, no vibrations and no CO2 emissions in “hotel” mode.

The unique design of the new PAJOT CUSTOM ECO YACHT 90’ boasts a full beam saloon (75m2) with 150-degree view from the galley, home cinema area, followed by panoramic master cabin with direct access to the fore private deck with a private lounging area and jacuzzi. Customisable layout offers the opportunity to draft two cabins instead of one master suite. Two spacious VIP cabins of 20m2 each are located on the lower deck, both equipped by private beach club terraces with direct access to water.

Guests may easily wander to the capacious foredeck at anchor, or while under sail, where 2 large trampolines are perfect for sunning and relaxing.

Powered by 2 x Perkins 210hp engines when not under sail, the Catana 90 ORION catamaran is capable of 8 – 10 knots.

Yacht Charter Accommodation

The ORION catamaran offers accommodation in 4 cabins. The master cabin has a king size bed. A VIP cabin offers a king size bed, which can also convert into 2 twin beds if required. A family cabin has a king size bed and a separate cabin with 2 twin beds. These cabins are adjoined and share a head, perfect for a family, kids with a nanny, or teenagers.

The McConaghy 82P power catamaran is an appealing all-rounder: a confident long-range cruiser, family yacht and coastal weekender, as well as offering a desirable platform for commercial charter.

The McConaghy 82P power catamaran is driven from the flybridge. Equipped with twin 250hp Yanmar engines, the yacht will reach a top speed of 17 knots and cruise at 10 knots, with the efficient hull form and lightweight construction reducing fuel burn by 30 to 50% compared to a motor yacht of the same length.

Large Volumes for Unsurpassed Living Confort and Entertaining

The yacht’s internal volume has been maximized and every space configured with distinct purpose in a layout that dispels all preconceptions of yacht interiors. The MC82p features a huge saloon lounge with a dining area and open plan galley on the main deck. A spacious aft deck with sofas provides an al fresco dining space, and a cozy exterior lounge is placed forward of the superstructure.

On the flybridge there is another informal dining area and freestanding lounge furniture, with sun loungers positioned aft to make the most of the elevated and uninterrupted views. The flybridge itself is sheltered by a fixed bimini with a retractable center ‘sun roof’ panel.

The accommodation arrangement allows for four seaward-facing double cabins, three of which can be converted to twin berths, and there are two additional cabins for the crew.

The MC82p carries a 5.7m tender on a hydraulic aft platform, which, with the tender deployed, creates a spacious swim platform, or provides additional deck space. Additional production options include solar power generation, synthetic teak decking, various hull colors, underwater lights and an impressive integrated audiovisual package.

The general arrangement of any McConaghy Multihull can be configured to specifically suit each client’s requirements. Some clients like to have a master suite on the main deck, while others request fewer but larger guest suites and some place greater emphasis on crew accommodation and layout versatility. This net-zero boat could revolutionize maritime travel

A boat pulled into Boston's Rowes Wharf recently that's unlike any other vessel in the world. Its name is the Energy Observer, and it's been traveling the globe for seven years using only renewable power to spread the word of sustainability on the sea.

The vessel is a demonstration project backed by a French hydrogen energy company and supported by many other tech companies in the renewable energy field. It set sail in 2017 and has been at sea ever since.

Probably the most striking thing about the catamaran-hulled boat that stretches 100 feet from bow to stern is that it's coated in solar panels.

The vessel's crew, including onboard climate scientist Beatrice Cordiano, recently gave GBH News a tour.

“So, if you want to follow me, as you can see, one of the sources of energy that we use are the solar panels,” Cordiano said as she walked over some of the hundreds of panels covering the boat. “We have covered the entire boat with different technologies.”

Those solar panels charge up lithium batteries, which provide short-term storage for the power that drives the vessel's electric motors.

“And then we have — which is the masterpiece of this boat — hydrogen, which is the long-term storage,” she said. “So, we produce hydrogen on board.”

As Cordiano explained, they suck up sea water, run it through a system to desalinize it, and then use a device called an electrolyzer to separate water into its two parts: hydrogen and oxygen. That hydrogen is stored in tanks on both the port and starboard sides of the boat, and can be run through a fuel cell to be turned back into electricity when they need it.

Mélanie de Groot van Embden is the Energy Observer's onboard reporter, sharing the story of this carbon-free vessel.

“The maritime industry is very polluting for our oceans. And 90% of the goods we consume are being transported with cargo ships,” de Groot van Embden said. “And at the moment, they are still in majority using marine diesel oil, which accounts for 3% of our emissions in the world. So, we really want to raise awareness for that and show that there are solutions, that the technologies are mature, that they just need to be scaled up.”

Since its launch, the boat has traveled widely to spread that message.

“We went to Hawaii. We went to New Caledonia. We went to Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, South Africa, Brazil and now the United States,” de Groot van Embden said.

They even sailed in the Arctic, to show that its technologies could work in extreme temperatures. The boat has been well received in every port, de Groot van Embden said.

“The U.S. has always been the most enthusiastic about our technology, even though you're also the second-most emitter in the world,” she said. “So it's always a little contradictory.”

The Energy Observer also uses wind power, but it doesn't use traditional sails. It was the first vessel to pioneer a technology called “ocean wings.”

Onboard engineer Luc Bourserie hit a switch and two wings raised up vertically from the boat like towers, 10 meters — or about 33 feet — high. They're fully automated to capture wind no matter what direction the boat is headed, he said. And they're easy to use.

“So, even if you have rough weather coming, you can put them down quite quickly and easy,” Bourserie said.

Because of their design, ocean wings are about twice as efficient as traditional sails, Bourserie said, and their rectangular profile doesn't cast much shadow on the solar panels beneath.

That forward motion under sail can also be turned back into electricity, similar to how a hybrid vehicle uses its momentum when breaking to recharge its batteries.

“ We can also use the speed of the boat that we have, thanks to the wind, to put our propellers in reverse mode and produce electricity from the speed, making the motors [act like] generators,” he said.

Bourserie sees some hope in the news last year that a cargo ship from Singapore was retrofitted with ocean wings, significantly cutting its fuel use. Some of the technologies on the Energy Observer aren't commercially viable yet, but the point of the vessel, Bourserie said, is to test them out.

“Let's not wait to be too late to develop these solutions,” he said.

The Energy Observer set sail again last week, and the crew plans to make it across the Atlantic to be back home in Paris in time for the Olympics there in July. It's an opportunity, for once, when the world comes to them.

The Sony Pictures sequel “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” made headlines as it rolled through a succession of Florida locations in late February and early March, with reports of crews “spark(ing) buzz” filming on the A1A Highway in Fort Lauderdale, fans catching a glimpse of stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Brickell, and traffic tie-ups in Miami.

The state has served as the primary shooting location for many memorable projects, from movies such as “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” (1994) to the TV series “Miami Vice” (1984-1989) and “Burn Notice” (2007-2013). But these days, major Florida-set productions are more likely to resemble Apple TV+ series “Palm Royale,” which was only there long enough to do aerial shots of the Bath & Tennis Club in Palm Beach, and Netflix’s remake of “Road House,” which was filmed almost entirely in the Dominican Republic.

The reason is simple economics: since the sunset of the Sunshine State’s film and TV tax incentive in 2015, productions have gone elsewhere, most notably its neighbor to the north, Georgia, which offers a 20%-30% refundable tax credit.

“We worked very closely with a lot of industry stakeholders to research around the country and around the world as to what would make sense in terms of putting these percentages together,” says Marco Giron, chief of film and entertainment in Miami-Dade County. 

In Broward County, located in the Miami metropolitan area, producers can choose from a menu of incentives, including the Sun-Screen Program ($1.5 to $5 million county spend; 20% rebate capped at $800,000) and the High Impact Film & TV ($5 million minimum county spend; 15% rebate capped at $2 million).

“Since I’ve been here, we’ve had 12 movies that fully shot here because of the incentive program,” says Lighterman, who preceded Giron in Miami-Dade before taking the top film job in Broward in December 2021.

But movies aren’t the only yardstick of success. The film and TV industry generated a record $247 million in local expenditures in Palm Beach County in 2023, up 3% from 2022, on the strength of unscripted shows such as “Hot Yachts” (ITV/Paramount+) and the Netflix docuseries “Break Point.”  

One of the drivers of its success is the Palm Beach County Film and Television Commission’s sponsorship and development program, which encourages the production of content that promotes local tourism. To be considered for funding, shows must have distribution outside the county, reaching potential visitors. After airing on their original platforms, they become available on demand on the Palm Beaches TV channel. Projects participating in the program have included Travel Channel’s “Pets in Paradise” and PBS’ “Travels and Traditions” with Burt Wolf.

“In many cases, they wouldn’t have the budget to do these types of things, so it’s been an incredible success for us,” says Palm Beach County film commissioner Michelle Hillery.

In the case of actress of Julia Stiles’ directorial debut “Wish You Were Here,” however, the primary reason a large portion of the shoot took place in Florida was not incentives (it didn’t get any), the valuable help it received from the Palm Beach and Broward County film commissions or the connections producer Michelle Khan made shooting commercials in the state. It was, in fact, a boat.

“There’s a catamaran featured in one of the final scenes in the film that we were able to get for a relatively affordable price down there,” says Khan.
