The Sunfish combines easy rigging and manageability for a comfortable and hassle-free sailing experience. This is the sailboat loved by all. Designed in 1952 as the ultimate beach craft, the Sunfish sailboat is still a favourite with all ages. This maintenance free boat holds its resale value thanks to its robust construction, highlighted by hard chines and a flat underbody. The Sunfish can be stored almost anywhere and is a snap to car-top, making it a popular international class and easy to transport to your favourite beach for family fun.

The Sunfish has its roots planted firmly in 1947 in Waterbury, Connecticut. Friends Alexander “Al” Bryan and Cortlandt “Cort” Heyniger (the Al and Cort in Alcort) pondered, “How to put a sail on a surfboard?” The answer involved a rejected design for American Red Cross waterfront rescue surfboards, leading to the Sailfish – a lateen rigged, flat-decked, plywood marvel. In 1951, Bryan’s pregnant wife found its flat deck somewhat uncomfortable. The addition of a cockpit and widening of the hull created the Sunfish. The logo was created by Heyniger, who traced a nickel and added fins, the tail and an eye. Early wood Sailfish and Sunfish were available assembled or as kits. In 1959 the introduction of fiberglass and the low cost and ease of production led to the proliferation of Sunfish everywhere. Other improvements included aluminium spars replacing spruce, Dacron sails replacing cotton, ash replacing mahogany for tillers, resulting in increased speed, performance and reliability. Sunfish racing started almost as quickly as two or three boats came together – the first North American Championship was 1963, the first Midwinters was 1965.

The Sunfish sailboats I restore are not  painted. I hand wet sand the original gelcoat to bring back the gloss finish through a multi step process. The hulls are weighed and force dried with hot air if needed. Upgrades include access ports added for inspection to vital areas of the hull. All hulls are stripped  of all hardware and refitte

In Vermont clean water is a  paramount  issue as with other states. Conservation and reclamation  of resources keeps toxic materials from entering the environment. My Water reclaiming system reuses the water I use for wet sanding while the by-product is captured through a multi  filter medium . This ensures nothing will be going down the

This ensures nothing will be going down the drain and into the ground or sewer systems. While I still enjoy being outside during the warmer months to do my initial washing and prep work, I still keep the heavy sanding  work inside in my containment wash booth. Also recycling these sailboats in many cases keeps them out of the landfills and on the water for many more years to come.

2 Sunfish Sailboats + Double Deck Trailer that are fully equipped to be sailed. Boat Descriptions – Boat 1 is a 1972 Sunfish with a blue deck & blue white stripped sail with metal halyard pulley & metal bailer. Boat 2 is a 1982 Sunfish with a white deck with orange trim and markings. It has a red/white and yellow/orange sail. See pictures. Both have all wooden mahogany daggerboards and rudder/ tiller assemblies and as you can see in photos. The rudder blades are reinforced and have metal cheek plates.Each boat has had a swivel jam cleat added to control the mainsheet. The boats have been stored under a roof since 1984 when we purchased them. They were sailed on freshwater lake only. The trailer has new tires with a spare and has been rigged to haul 2 boats with a tube for sail and mast storage. Also included is a lightweight dolly to transport the boats short distances to the water. This allows for easy launching without having to back the trailer down a boat ramp into the water. I paid $1,575 for this boat 7 years ago. It had sat in someones garage for 30 years. It was in fantastic shape when I bought it. It was used 2 times the first year I got it. I had grown up sailing a sunfish and bought it hoping I would use it a lot at the lake in Mashpee Massachusetts summer cottage where it has been stored. It has been stored year round underneath tarps completely covered year round. This sale includes the boat, the sail, the ropes, the mast, 2 centerboards, and the rudder. The rudder was missing the last segment when I bought it-the part you hold on to, so I invented a last segment which worked fine for me. One centerboard is in great shape, the other in ok shape. The one piece of damage is seen clearly in the photos- one piece of metal strapping has peeled away from the edge. I am sure someone who knows what they are doing can bend it back. I would rather not attempt it myself. It was watertight when I sailed it. It is sold as is.It is a great deal.Cape Cod Mashpee on the shore of a lake.

Great little day sailer. It has a standard dagger board but is missing the brass wedge bracket. Easy to replace. It also has a white racing dagger board. Please see pictures. The sail is more of a racing style than most. This boat really moves. There are a few minor dings here and there. Nothing major. It is ready to sail. Trailer has lights and has good bearings. 1993 Sunfish / Laser / Daysailor DaySailor Up for sale is a 16' Daysailer produced by Sunfish/Laser.  This one owner boat is in excellent condition and comes complete as a package.  It's been service here at Ocean House Marina since it was new each year with service records on file and available upon request in PDF format.   Included with the sale of this boat is a Johnson 3 HP two stroke motor in excellent condition and very few hours.  This is a very desirable and hard to find two stroke portable motor.  This motor has a self contained fuel tank and runs well with ethanol fuel.  The motor has been serviced here at Ocean House Marina as well.  Also included with this package is a galvanized trailer.  All sails and rigging are in good working order.  The sail was always stored indoors and in excellent shape with it's own custom sail bag.  The boat was also shrink wrapped and put away dry each year here at Ocean House Marina, all service recorded in detail.   The boat is here on display at Ocean House Marina. 1978 Sonar Restoration by Shumway Marine

1978 Sonar Sailboat – Awaiting Restoration

Late last fall we sold a 1978 Sonar to Skip Shumway of  Shumway Marine . The boat was in pretty tough shape. The blue gel coat had faded to a chalky hue. The black anodized mast had rubbed through to the bare aluminum. The rudder and keel were both a mess in each their own unique way, and the interior was pretty much shot.

We were certain that for the right buyer, though, we had a diamond in the rough. The Sonar is a great daysailer and racer, and we are glad to announce that this one is back!

The  Paint Shop  can accomodate up to 45′ boats. Our painters are skilled in using  Awlgrip ,  Imron , and  gelcoat  for refinishing. Blister repair, bottom painting, and doll-ups are also done through our Paint Shop.

About the Sonar Sailboat:

The 23′ Sonar one-design keelboat is a high-performance racer and also a comfortable daysailor just right for getting the entire family or friends on the water together. It was designed by Bruce Kirby and almost 700 boats have been built since 1980. The Sonar has recently achieved status as an International Class.

Performance

Origin of the Sonar:

“The Sonar may well be the best boat I’ve ever designed.” – Bruce Kirby

It started when Bruce Kirby’s home club (Noroton Yacht Club, Darien, CT USA) couldn’t find the right boat to get their members involved in club racing; fewer and fewer of its members were participating.

They studied a great many existing classes of boats but all were considered too expensive, too slow, too demanding to sail, or just plain uncomfortable. So Bruce was asked to design a new boat specifically to meet the requirements of a club racing one-design keelboat fleet.
