Deer Creek Reservoir construction, beach closure to last until 2026
The sailing beach is closed at Deer Creek Reservoir while a construction project is underway on the dam.
Holding water for 1.5 million people on the Wasatch Front, the Deer Creek State Park lake is a construction site – at least, in its southern region. A floating excavator is one component already in use, and soon, passersby on U.S. Highway 189 will see more equipment.
It’s a renovation project on the dam’s drainage facilities. Restoring the 80-year-old dam has been in the works for years. Planners expect it to take about three years, and the equipment floating on the water will be involved for about half of it.
“There is nothing wrong with Deer Creek. It is absolutely as safe as it's ever been,” said Dave Faux, facilities and lands manager for Provo River Water Users Association. “It is operating perfectly right now, this whole project is just preventative measures to keep us going continually for another 80 years without any issues.”
He says water users won’t be affected during construction.
Since much of the work will be done underwater, the reservoir won’t need draining.
“It's a pretty cool project,” Faux said. “First time in Utah where anything like this has been done completely underwater. We'll have scuba divers underneath. They're putting all the pieces together on what's called the intake structure, where the water flows through to those guard gates.”
Sailboat Beach on the lake is closed. Faux says it’s the staging area for the equipment out on the water. The project team says it will remain closed through March 2026.

Deer Creek Intake Project
The importance of deer creek dam & reservoir.
The Deer Creek Dam & Reservoir is an essential infrastructural feature for Utahns living on the Wasatch Front for many reasons:
- Facilitates water supply to over 1.5 million people
- One of the most utilized recreational ecosystems in Utah
- Vital to Utah’s future growth and economic sustainability
For these reasons, it will be crucial to address the following problems facing the safety and health of the dam & reservoir going forward:
Water Supply Concerns for the Wasatch Front
Aging infrastructure.
Built over 80 years ago, the Deer Creek Dam guard gates have reached the end of their useful life. In fact, manufacturer parts are no longer available or need to be specialty fabricated. Currently, access is challenging to perform maintenance on this infrastructure without draining Deer Creek Reservoir.
Invasive Species Threat
Deer Creek Reservoir and other storage reservoirs face an imminent threat from the aquatic invasive species, the Quagga mussel. As currently configured, Deer Creek Dam and Reservoir have no effective defense against this threat. This invasive species would cause the intake and guard gates to require extensive ongoing maintenance and could disrupt the downstream flows and the reservoir ecosystem.
Innovative Solution, Uninterrupted Water Supply
Provo River Water Users Association (the Association) proposes to safeguard against these concerns by utilizing an innovative design and construction method to refurbish the intake and guard gates WITHOUT draining the reservoir to ensure uninterrupted water supply to the Wasatch Front. Planned modifications to the intake and refurbishment of the guard gates will provide the best state-of-the-art defense mechanisms against aquatic invasive species. Project design started in 2021, with construction starting Spring 2023. The project is estimated to cost $100,000,000 and will take 3 years to complete .
The Association is partnering with Central Utah Water Conservancy District (CUWCD) in funding $24 million dollars of the Intake Project and has received authorization from the Board of Water Resources for a $65 million dollar loan. The Association is also continuing to pursue other loan and grant opportunities for the remaining balance.
Intake Project Summary Points
The Deer Creek Dam intake and guard gates infrastructure conveys a significant portion of the drinking water, secondary irrigation water, industrial and agricultural water for 1,500,000 people in Utah (half of the state’s population).
- The dam foundation and spillway gates were brought up to seismic standards in 2007 to improve Dam Safety, but the intake and guard gates were not. This project will mitigate this risk.
- The original 1930 design of the dam infrastructure has served the citizens of Utah well for over 80 years. However, the original design failed to incorporate a bypass or the ability to access isolation gates for maintenance. This project will rectify this functional deficiency.
- The existing infrastructure is over 80 years old and is beyond its functional life. Critical components have deteriorated, and this project will retrofit and refurbish many components of the old facilities.
- Innovative construction methods will allow critical water storage to be maintained, rather than draining the reservoir for construction.
Sailboat Beach Closed for the Deer Creek Intake Project
The Sailboat Beach Day-Use Area at Deer Creek State Park will be closed to all public access beginning May 1, 2023, for construction as part of the Deer Creek Intake Project. The closure is expected to last until spring 2026.
During the construction process, members of the public will not be allowed to access the sailboat beach area. This closure extends into the reservoir where boats and barges will be docked when not in use.
If you are recreating in the area, recognize that sailboat beach and the 1,500-foot buffer area at the dam are restricted areas (NO TRESPASING) and are sectioned-off by buoys.

Praise from Our Renters
“We did the VIP rental which came with a Master Craft and a driver. It was a bit expensive but worth every penny. Chris had ALL of us ages 11-57 wake boarding and surfing within an hour. Whenever we needed a new water toy he’d call ahead and it was waiting for us on the dock. It would have taken us a week to do what he did in hours! Staff was very friendly and accommodating as well. You will have a great time for sure!”

Things to do.
Deer Creek Reservoir is a popular boating spot for city slickers to hit up on the weekends. Choppy water in the afternoon appeases the wave-runner crews, yet calm and glassy water satisfies the waterskiers early in the day (or mid-week). Boaters can choose to start and end their day from one of two paved boat launch ramps and two marinas. And there’s a sandy beach on the northeast side for those looking to relax, sunbathe or picnic.
From April to November, you can catch rainbow trout, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass at Deer Creek Reservoir. Stream fishing happens both above and below the reservoir in the Provo river. Learn more about fishing rules, reports and regulations.
Island Aqua Park
This open floating water park includes obstacle courses, monkey bars and trampolines, along with a quarter pipe and an action tower. Designed for anyone above age six, the whole family can enjoy jumping around and playing in the water.

About Deer Creek Reservoir is a large reservoir at the top of Provo Canyon in northern Utah.
Getting There Deer Creek Reservoir is easily accessible from US-189 between Provo and Heber. The highway crosses the dam and follows the shore for about five miles. Since this is a state park there will be an entrance fee, typically $10.
Accommodations Recreational facilities at the reservoir include Deer Creek State Park as well as private recreational facilities and marinas. The state park has modern rest rooms with showers, sewage disposal, a 31 unit campground, and fish cleaning stations. The park is located two miles north of the dam on US-189 (milepost 20) with well-marked entrances. Private facilities include Snow's Marina in Wallsburg Bay (milepost 21), the Deer Creek Island Resort (milepost 24) with a restaurant, boat rentals, boat launch areas, picnic areas, swimming areas, gasoline and sundries. Additional state-owned beach facilities with public rest rooms are just north of the resort. There are numerous USFS campgrounds up the North Fork up Provo Canyon on U-92, and Wasatch State Park in Midway (north of the reservoir and US-189 in the Heber Valley) also offers camping.

Thoughts In the spring avoid the east part of the lake as the runoff ruins visibility. One of the better areas is around Sailboat Beach, head toward the dam. When the water levels are low the entrance off Sailboat Beach will be rocky. Becareful when hauling or carrying gear to the waters edge. Many divers will dive around the 'island' near the state park entrance.

The 11 Best Things To Do At Deer Creek State Park
If you’ve never visited Deer Creek State Park, you’ll want to plan a trip as soon as possible.
This state park is one of the best, offering a huge variety of activities and accommodations for visitors. The park has a resort, a marina, a large campground, and so much more. It really is an outdoor lover’s paradise, perfect for families and solo travelers alike.
Deer Creek State Park also happens to have a very interesting and presidential history. The park is home to the historical Harding Cabin. In the early 20th century, a cabin that stood overlooking the valley was owned by the Attorney general under President Harding, Harry M. Daugherty. It was built in 1918 and served as a sort of hunting retreat for Daugherty and his friends, which allegedly included President Harding.
But long before the cabin was built, indigenous people called the ridge above Deer Creek and its valley home. In 2000 BC, the people living in the area belonged to nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes. They would come to the camp throughout the year and due to the burial sites around the camp, we know that the area was inhabited over a long period of time.
The creek became a lake in 1968 when the dam was completed. Six years later, the state park officially opened, and it’s been one of the most visited state parks ever since.
The list of things to do at the park is absolutely massive, but we’ve chosen the most popular activities to highlight here. Get out there and explore, Columbus! It’s a beautiful state we live in.

Another rare opportunity to own one of the best tough sailing yachts in the world on short notice. This immaculate, hardly used 2014 Bestevaer 49ST is one of the favourite models built by KM Yachtbuilders. This beautiful, complete, modern Bestevaer 49ST " Mate " is clearly the little sister of the “Bestevaer II”, from the famous designer Gerard Dijkstra has built for his own use. The sailing characteristics are excellent and, also due to the presence of the pilot house, make this boat a very comfortable boat for long trips. Now ready to be admired and inspected.

Bestevaer 66, ANABEL
KM Yachtbuilders, Bestevaer 66 Built 2014 / €1,450,000, + VAT
Broker’s Comments
Bestevaer 66, ANABEL is an extraordinary world cruising yacht that was built for her current owner. She has taken him around the world in safety and with total reliability. He was closely involved with her build and she is very much a custom yacht. An enormous amount of care has gone into every aspect of her design and build, providing built in redundancy of her systems and safety for her crew and longevity for her. She has a powerful and easily handled sail plan and a secure cockpit. Her pilothouse is the perfect place for navigating and her pilot house windows were recently replaced with laminated glass which is super strong. She has a comfortable main saloon for living well and 3 good sleeping cabins which are comfortable and safe for her crew in a seaway. Her lifting keel (with 9000kg lead bulb) gives her enormous flexibility and ultimate stability. With her metal construction and robust design profile she is perfect for all oceans and would be secure and safe for high and low latitude sailing as well and for cruising in warmer waters.
ANABEL has been meticulously maintained by her owner with a series of works when laid up in New Zealand. Recently her underwater profile has been taken back and re-coated and she has new standing rigging.
Yachts with this level of capability and also those that are so well proven, rarely come to the market and ANABEL is very special. Everywhere you look there are design touches that are unique to her and very smart. She is a great alternative to commissioning new build if you have a very serious cruising programme in mind.

Owner’s Comments
ANABEL has many admirers around the world. In every port I have been to, people have come by to have a look and express amazement. Many old salts have been on board, and all of them liked the yacht (even the Coastguard).
The yacht is quite a machine, and the new owner will get in depth explanation of all the details. Since I am the only person to know the yacht in detail, I am willing to spend a week or more, to transfer all knowledge to the new owner.
Since I have very much built this yacht, and lived aboard for some years, I wish her to pass into good hands and for her to sail the oceans of the world for many years to come.
During her 7 years of ownership various equipment has been replaced, added or modified (partly in New Zealand).
- New diesel pumps for better diesel transfer.
- A hydro generator.
- Windlass set up modified for smooth chain operation.
- Anchor re-galvanized.
- Improved boom with 4. reefs fitted.
- Keel lift cylinder overhauled and 2. seal + scrapper added.
- Keel guides replaced.
- Various ropes and sheets replaced.
Recently Changed or Replaced Equipment
- New anchor chain.
- All old anti fouling sanded off to the base coat.
- Yacht will go into the water with fresh Antifouling.
- Rudder bearings replaced.
- CPP prop shaft demounted, new seals, cutlass bearing, greased.
- New pilot house windows from laminated glass.
- Re-caulking of the teak in cockpit.
- New upholstery in the salon.
- 500m new rope as needed.
- Paint repairs.
- Toilet rebuild.

BESTEVAER YACHTS ALUMINUM EXPEDITION SAILBOATS BUILT TO GO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD
The go-anywhere yacht for go-anywhere people
Bestevaer yachts combine high performance with gorgeous functional design. Able to withstand the world’s toughest conditions, it’s no wonder that the Bestevaer has become the boat of choice for explorers, scientists, and adventurers of all kinds.
The Bestevaer is a spectacular amount of boat to take on a true adventure
BESTEVAER SAILBOAT MODELS
Bestevaer sailing yachts are simply stunning to behold. Their balanced sheer and fine entry are accentuated by a plumb bow and pilothouse, giving a sense of power and comfort. Attention to details during build and the consideration of every design element combine to create the best aluminum sailing yachts in the world. Not only can every Bestevaer carry her owners as safely in cold climates as the tropics, they are also a joy to sail in every condition.
BESTEVAER 45 S/Y
An aluminum sailboat that can be sailed anywhere short-handed. A pilothouse sailboat designed by Gerard Dykstra and crafted by KM Yachtbuilders without compromise.
BESTEVAER 49 S/Y
The 49 is the perfect fit between the 45 and the 53. She is a very capable world cruising sailboat that can be customized to suit her owner’s needs.
BESTEVAER 53 S/Y
The 53 is perhaps best described by owner and designer Gerard Dykstra; “Designing any boat is a balancing act between many desirable characteristics and inevitably the end-product is a compromise, never perfect in all aspects. However, the Bestevaer comes close to my ideal. The past voyages proved this right.”
Opening yourself up to the world’s extremities and the unknown is easier when you’re at ease. That’s why comfort is a key element. Even the most rugged off-grid adventurer sailboats from Bestevaer offer smooth sailing and comfortable interiors.
BESTEVAER DESIGN
No frills, aluminum, rugged pilothouse vessels designed for adventuring. Designed by world-renowned sailor and naval architect Gerard Dykstra from Dykstra Naval Architects, the Bestevaer family combines high performance with gorgeous functionalist design. No wonder Bestevaer has become the boat of choice for sailing fanatics, explorers, scientists, and adventurers of all kinds.
Aluminum From A to Z
Bestevaer sailboats are built with the highest grade aluminum available. Hull, pilothouse, superstructure as well as interior elements are built with hand shaped aluminum by some of the best craftspeople on the planet. Continuous welds, additional plating, and no FRP are hallmarks of the Bestevaers.
Fully Ballasted Keels
Flexibility in build choices without sacrificing strength is another Bestevaer trademark. Keel choices include a fixed keel or a centerboard keel for serious shoal cruising. Both have nearly a 40 percent ballast ratio, ensuring excellent sailing qualities.
The benefits of a pilothouse are well known, but Bestevaers provide unrivaled security and comfort. These insulated aluminum houses have excellent visibility, keep owners dry underway, and make excellent living spaces while on the hook.

First look: Bestevaer 36 – downsized pilothouse cruiser
- Toby Hodges
- June 2, 2023
The new Bestevaer 36 from renowned naval architect Gerard Dijkstra is the smallest ever boat in the history if the Besteaver brand
Product Overview
In a world in which yachts are constantly becoming larger, this Dutch brand is bucking the trend, with the smallest-ever model in its 20-year history. It’s intended to offer performance along with shoal draught and the ability to safely dry out on a beach.
These rugged aluminium pilothouse cruisers have always reflected what former professional skipper and renowned naval architect Gerard Dijkstra wants in a boat of his own: a safe, comfortable, and good-looking yacht for unrestricted, short-handed sailing. It has proved to be the perfect formula for a lifetime of ocean sailing, high latitude work and solo racing.
The Bestevaer 36 follows in a similar spirit, but is also intended as a boat in which Dijkstra can spend extended periods in the shallow waters, lakes and coastlines close to home that he has not previously had time to explore in detail.
“The Bestevaer 36 is a high-performance little yacht. It’s a very easy boat to sail and versatile as well,” he says. “It will easily take you around the world but is also ideal for cruising the local wetlands.”
This vessel therefore needed to be a sufficiently compact yacht to easily fit in small harbours and marinas, with the ability to dry out when sailing in the beautiful Wadden Sea nearby. Yet it still retains all the distinctive features of the brand’s larger yachts including aluminium construction, watertight fore and aft bulkheads, plumb bow, practical pilothouse and deep bulwarks.
Galley is to port, heads and diesel heater to starboard of the companionway. Light comes from overhead hatches and strong hull portlights
The two tonne ballasted centreboard provides a generous 2.4m draught when lowered. This is combined with a big rig to give good sailing performance on all points of sail, including close-hauled and light airs. Yet the board retracts fully into the canoe body, reducing draught to only 0.7m and creating a flat surface on which to dry out safely on the hull’s thick bottom plating.
Like the larger Bestevaers, this boat was conceived at the outset to offer crew plenty of protection. In addition to seats each side of the pilothouse, which has a 360˚ view, the coachroof extends over the cockpit, creating a very sheltered area. All lines are led aft for easy single-handed operation.
Generous beam helps to provide good form stability, as well as increasing accommodation volumes. The interior has a flexible semi-open plan layout, with three different style options.
The first boat, which will be the designer’s own, is currently in build and scheduled for completion this spring. This example is also being used as a case study for a transition towards more sustainable production processes at KM Yachtbuilders. For instance, 70% of the aluminium is recycled, as is the insulation, while environmentally friendly and largely recycled materials are used for the interior. It has a 15kW OceanVolt electric drive with sufficient battery capacity for four hours of autonomy. This is supplemented with regeneration and a large solar panel array on the pilothouse roof.
A couple of interesting options are offered for sail plans, including a 95% jib on a Hoyt boom, which makes for an enticing combination of very easy handling and excellent sail shape on all points of sail.
To help make up for loss of headsail area a square-top mainsail with 14% more area than the standard pinhead version can be specified.
The standard specification has a very high level of equipment, including the solar panels, electric propulsion package, antifouling wrap and a traditional style floor mounted with a Dickinson Alaska diesel heater.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision
For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.
It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.
Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.
His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.
"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.
Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'
The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.
Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.
"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.
"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.
"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."
Tough decision to sell
Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.
Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.
"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.
"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."
Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.
"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.
He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.
"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.
"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."
'Next phase' for the boat
The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.
When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.
"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.
"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.
"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."
Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.
"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.
Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.
"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.
"It's always been a part of his life."

Vitruvius Yachts reveals 46m superyacht designed for the Bahamas
British design studio Vitruvius Yachts has revealed a new superyacht concept known as the Vitruvius Palm Beach. The 46-metre project is available for sale with Worth Avenue Yachts and has been tailored specifically for the North American market.
Several prominent shipyards are "currently bidding to bring this vision to life," according to the broker, with construction expected to begin next year.
The superyacht is designed with a low draft of two metres, making it best suited to shoal draft locations such as the Bahamas, Florida and The Chesapeake.
Accommodation is across five lower deck cabins, plus quarters for nine crew. The owner's cabin would be full-beam and features an office, dressing area, his and hers bathrooms and fold-down balcony.
While the interior designer is unconfirmed, preliminary renderings reveal a pared back, contemporary aesthetic. The main saloon benefits from full-height windows, a "convertible" lounging and dining area for 10 guests as well as a dedicated lounge starboard.
The main deck is fitted with a formal bar and second convertible seating area aft. Another major convivial space is the sundeck, which has a large sunbathing area, a bar, barbecue and a Jacuzzi.
Meanwhile, the beach club features a pool that can operate with freshwater or saltwater. Bulwarks open either side to form a larger lounging area, which is arranged with several sunpads.
The concept also includes a tender garage able to accommodate a six-metre and two jet skis, thanks to a Solas-compliant sliding beam crane and fold-up shell door for launching and loading.
Vitruvius Palm Beach would be powered by twin CAT 32 engines for a maximum speed of 15.7 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots.
This reveal follows the delivery of Vitruvius Yachts' 65.7-metre Alchemy .
