  • Tech Billionaire Yuri Milner’s ‘Multiverse’ Superyacht Spotted in SVG

The ‘Multiverse’ superyacht, owned by tech billionaire Yuri Milner, was sighted near Indian Bay, St. Vincent, on Monday, February 12th.

The Multiverse yacht was built for billionaire Graeme Hart ($9.4 billion), who later sold it to Yuri Milner. Milner, a former physicist and early Facebook investor worth is $6.8 billion. He acquired his fortune with investments in Twitter, Spotify, and Airbnb through his venture company DST Global.

The yacht features luxurious amenities including a wine bar, a sizable swimming pool, a movie room, a sauna and a generous gym.

Don't know how big, but something is wrong with intact and damaged stability of that vessel. Even in 2020 it was a (a bit quiet) problem, but at the end of 2021 it was also noted by their Classification Society DNV. Take a look under 'Conditions'. That Princess on the bow is quite high above the waterline and might also be one part of a problem. It's 45+ ton boat after all. VanDutches aren't really making anything good for it too. In September of 2022 they had a collision at anchor with M/V Charles Island in Panama. Under 'Conditions' above you can see that they had to go for repairs in Tampa, Florida. That's why they are there at the moment. Dry dock for sure, but it might also be in a shed. Click to expand...

Dear Madam, Not all owners of larger yachts are hiding their ownership for tax avoidance or other unmoral reasons. Grounds for liability are one very important reason to have a limited enterprise set in between the owner and the yacht. The risk to have a larger yacht registered and insured directly on your name is far to dangerous for the owner, especially in Europe. The smallest accident caused by Your crew or any enviromental damage caused by Your yacht can easily clear the deepest pocket. My 210 ft full displacement yacht for example is registered on my German based property management company. But this limited enterprise is registered on my name and private adress. And for all yachts and planes oft he family, the German VAT was fully payed. You may call that stupid but I like to live with the rule " Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's ". I have always made very good experiences with that type of business. The other problem is the flag state. Germany for example does not recognize yachts above 24 meters (CE classification) in length. They are either passenger ships, cargo vessels or as the only possible trick, scientific explorer vessels. But those rules make these "ships" not look like a yacht anymore, if You want it to fly for example the German flag. So my yachts are flying the Maltese Cross (means still EU flagged), are registered on my property management company and have only EU crew. But this allows, that for privacy reasons only the authorities have access to my personal name and private adress. Why not German crews: Also I have double crew on my yacht (means one on and one off duty) it is hard to find qualified German Yacht crews with the propper licenses for a EU flagged large yacht. My last German skipper was recruited from my commercial shipping company and his wife was my chief stew. They worked for me until they both retired. Their replacement came from Your country and my chief is from GB. I am very happy with them. But hiding the ownership (and its nationality) with 6 or more intermediary limited offshore enterprises for political reasons and tax avoidance is a different story. There are lawyer offices for example at Georgetown, Cayman Islands that have more enterprises, ships and large properties in their files than some capital town in Europe. And the banks in those offshore countries help the ownerships to clean their "black" money for spending it officially all over the world. It is very hard for the honest yacht owners among us to see the yacht owner moored next to You, laughing at You for paying taxes and obeying the rules. That is one of the reasons, I left Port Hercules several years ago for Mallorca and Ibiza. I could not stand the Russian Oligarchs moored next to us anymore. But I admit also for their behaviour! The international restrictions against these people and the seizure of their yachts has cleared some harbours in the Med nicely. The big boys from Russia have gone to the far east, Turkey and Montenegro. I hope we will see a lot less wild parties in the bars and restaurants of the hotspots in the Med this summer. I will definately not miss them. Just my 2 (Euro) cents HTMO9

SUPERYACHT LIFE

The human side of yacht ownership

How would you characterise the typical yacht owner? Whatever you may have been led to believe, the truth is simple: for most, it’s about using their yachts for precious family time, and for many it’s also about using their yachts for good.

There’s a theme that is repeated on countless yachts large and small the world over – superyachting, for most, is not about being seen but rather the opposite. It’s about yacht families and their friends enjoying precious, private moments away from the pressures of demanding business lives and the long hours running those businesses can entail.

“I have an extended family, and when our schedules allow we all like to gather on the yacht and spend some quality time as a family,” Douglas Barrowman , owner of the yacht Turquoise , told Superyacht Life back in 2017. “There is no place like a yacht for family togetherness.”

The human side of yacht ownership

A love of the sea, adventure and technology

Superyachts and yacht ownership are also a way to explore the world around us, and to interact with and grow to understand extraordinarily diverse communities from remote Pacific islands to the Scandinavian Arctic. It’s something that inspired tech entrepreneur Jasper Smith to combine his love of adventure and his love of the sea with an opportunity for owners to give back while indulging their passion.

“I have always had a deep passion for the ocean,” Smith says. “I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau movies and being enthralled at the idea of being challenged by an endeavour.” When he set out to find his own perfect explorer yacht, however, he realised it didn’t yet exist. His answer was to create Arksen. “My aim with Arksen was to create the perfect machines to enable adventure,” he enthuses. “I also wanted to build sustainable boats which considered full life cycles, from material sourcing to recycling.”

That’s not all – Arksen also asks owners of its yachts to sign up to a pledge it calls 10% for the Ocean, where they will donate 10% of their vessel’s time to philanthropic activities. “A lot of people who have the money feel a responsibility to try and make sure that the oceans are well looked after,” Smith explains. “The people that are attracted to Arksen are passionate about the ocean and want to go off on slightly more advanced expeditions and trips. With that audience, there is a tremendous buy-in to the boat being for more than just their own purposes.”

The human side of yacht ownership

Superyachts as a force for good

It speaks to the heart of the matter, which is that the superyacht industry and yacht owners in particular have a heart – they care about preserving the environment they enjoy, and they care about the communities they interact with who make them feel so welcome when they visit. It’s reflected in the smallest of gestures, such as donating materials and books to local schools, to the largest – helping with last-mile delivery of critical disaster relief. It’s about superyachts giving back.

It’s a positive-impact attitude toward humanity that is quietly typified by hundreds of superyacht owners, who often prefer to do their thing under the radar rather than take false glory for their philanthropic or humanitarian endeavours. For some it’s as straightforward as getting involved in projects with organisations like YachtAid Global . For others, their endeavours become a key reason for yachting.

American superyacht owner Carl Allen is a prime example of these philanthropic yacht owners. After selling his company, and having enjoyed chartering and owning yachts as a family for years, Allen set up Allen Explorations to deliver a full programme of projects, ranging from historical shipwreck searches and environmental research to disaster relief. Indeed, Allen’s support yacht Axis played a vital role in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian – one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the Bahamas.

“We had to drop everything and help after the hurricane,” says Allen. “ Axis delivered over £700,000 of supplies and made multiple trips to Little Grand island in the Bahamas. We’ve turned it into the epitome of how to organise hurricane relief.” The team helped get the local school back up and running, and organised for a group from Florida Power and Light to help restore power. “The island also lost their water tower,” he adds, “so we delivered four tanks on  Axis .”

Celebrating the good in the superyachting good life

From family time to time spent embracing the global family, superyacht owners have a far greater positive impact than many assume from preconceived ideas about what a superyacht is and the sort of person who owns or charters one. It’s one of the reasons The Superyacht Life Foundation, in association with the Monaco Yacht Show , has unveiled The Honours, which is a way to celebrate the people of our industry rather than the yachts which so often get sole focus. It’s about recognising the extraordinary contributions that people make, the change they inspire, the opportunities they create, and the lives they change.

On 26 September, the eve of the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, three honourees – nominated by people from across the superyacht industry, and selected from a shortlist by an expert panel of industry judges – will be feted for their work and contribution to superyachting. These are industry professionals and yacht owners who epitomise what superyachting can do. These are people who highlight the good in the superyachting good life.

Yacht owners, impactful journeys

All around the globe, yacht owners are enjoying precious time on their yachts with family and friends, and many are also realising that their yachts can be a force for good and for change, tying in with their philanthropic works and humanitarian endeavours.

“Our yacht is a platform for much of our life,” offers Joe Anderson , co-owner of the Benovia Winery in California with his wife, Mary Dewane. “For instance, we used it at a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis in Baltimore at the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner event. The Blue Angels were flying overhead and used Bella Una [the couple’s yacht] as a GPS coordinate and performed flybys, tipping their wings at us. It was quite a thrill. Having a yacht is a way to keep the family intact, enjoy time with friends and have fun.”

The boat towing the Ransom Everglades student who was killed in a Biscayne Bay boating accident earlier this month is owned by a renowned biotech entrepreneur who lives in a $23 million Miami Beach home, is a University of Miami donor and owns a 182-foot superyacht in addition to the vessel involved in the accident off Key Biscayne, the Miami Herald reported .

Jonathan Rothberg, 61, who made his fortune through several geonomics and medical device companies he founded, is the owner of the black 42-foot 2017 Hanse Fjord that was towing 15-year-old Ella Riley Adler in the water when she was struck and killed by another boat near Key Biscayne’s Nixon Beach, according to international, federal and state records.

While marine authorities have identified the boat owner who they say left the scene after hitting Ella, a freshman at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, they haven’t yet named the owner of the vessel on which Ella was spending the day with friends on the water.

Ransom everglades student killed in key biscayne hit-and-run boat crash.

Ella Adler, a 15-year-old Ransom Everglades student, was killed in a hit-and-run boat crash near Key Biscayne’s Nixon Beach on May 11. During the investigation, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission tracked down the boat and alleged driver.

The boat towing the Ransom Everglades student who was killed in a Biscayne Bay boating accident earlier this month is owned by a renowned biotech entrepreneur who lives in a $23 million Miami Beach home, is a University of Miami donor and owns a 182-foot superyacht in addition to the vessel involved in the accident off Key Biscayne.

While marine authorities have identified the boat owner who they say left the scene after hitting Ella, a freshman at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, they haven’t yet named the owner of the vessel on which Ella was spending the day with friends on the water.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the state police agency investigating the accident, did, however, include that vessel’s registration number in its initial report of the accident.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection log states that in 2021, a boat with that vessel’s registration number departed West Palm Beach for the Caribbean island of St. Barthélemy.

The vessel’s name appears as “T/T Gene Chaser.” Records from the Cayman Islands, where the boat is registered, link a company under the same name to Rothberg. Rothberg’s yachts — the Gene Chaser and the Gene Machine — have garnered big spreads in the boating, scientific and business trade press in recent years, particularly since he transformed them into floating science labs during the pandemic.

Rothberg hadn’t responded to the Miami Herald’s multiple requests for comment as of Tuesday evening.

The 42-foot boat towing Ella and another girl is a tender, that is, a smaller boat used to shuttle back and forth from a larger boat, in this case, Rothberg’s Gene Chaser, a 182-foot superyacht built in 2020. Photos of the Gene Chaser capture the Fjord, plus a 20-foot Zodiac, a landing craft and a fleet of jet skis all fitting on the sizable stern deck.

Two girls in the water at the same time

The FWC report says Edmund Richard Hartley, 30, was piloting the Fjord, which was towing Ella and the other girl behind the boat around 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11, about a mile west of Mashta Point off Key Biscayne. Ella was on a wake board and the other girl was on a wake surfboard, according to the report.

The girls fell off their boards at different times and in different locations, and both were in the water simultaneously, the report states. The report did not identify the other girl.

Another boat, heading west, “struck the female wake boarder who was in the water, further away” from the boat that was towing her, the report says. Ella died from her injuries.

On the boat with Hartley were Emma Roberts, 30; Sebastian Pearce, 21; seven 15-year-olds; and three 14-year-olds. One of the girls on the boat was Rothberg’s daughter, a classmate of Ella’s at Ransom Everglades, whose 15th birthday was the day before the boat outing, according to the report.

Ella was the granddaughter of Michael Adler, the U.S. ambassador to Belgium. Michael Adler was formerly president of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and vice chair of the Florida International University Board of Trustees.

Hundreds turned out for Ella’s funeral service at Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach, where she was eulogized by Rabbi Jonathan Berkun, the rabbi at Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, as “a force of nature, a glowing and gorgeous young woman who was loved, admired, cherished and adored by more people than anyone her age would normally be.”

First Lady Jill Biden sat shiva with the Adlers.

Background of captain piloting boat

It’s not clear if Rothberg hired Hartley as a captain. The Miami Herald has reached out to Hartley but hasn’t received a response.

Hartley, who’s from London, studied at the United Kingdom Sailing Academy and at the Glasgow Maritime Academy in Scotland, according to his Facebook profile. The page also says he works in the superyachts industry. A source close to the matter said Hartley is certified through the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in the United Kingdom to captain a ship up to 3,000 gross tons.

According to the FWC investigation report, 78-year-old Carlos Alonso, who lives on the water in Coral Gables near Matheson Hammock Park, was operating the 42-foot 2020 Boston Whaler that struck and killed Ella.

READ MORE: Gables man was piloting boat that struck and killed Ransom Everglades student: FWC report

Alonso’s criminal defense attorney Lauren Field Krasnoff previously told the Miami Herald that Alonso “has no knowledge whatsoever of having been involved in this accident,” and, if he had realized he hit someone on the water, he “absolutely would have stopped.”

READ MORE: Man accused of piloting boat that killed 15-year-old girl off Key Biscayne. Who is he?

“Bill is a good man and he is absolutely devastated by the loss of this intelligent, accomplished and beautiful young woman,” Field Krasnoff told the Herald. “He has cooperated 100% with law enforcement and will continue to do so.”

The FWC said its investigation is ongoing, and the agency hasn’t arrested anyone.

A scientist — and a multimillionaire

In 2021, Rothberg moved to South Florida from Connecticut, buying a $23.5 million house off the Venetian Causeway, Miami-Dade property records show.

An article on the UM website states Rothberg was “seeking to spur innovation through building deep relationships with the University of Miami community.”

His gift to UM’s College of Engineering has led to the Miami Engineering Rothberg Catalyzer Award, which helps fund biotech projects of UM undergraduate and graduate students. The first winners consisted of 13 teams, each receiving $5,000 to push their projects forward.

Rothberg has made headlines with his superyacht Gene Machine, which boasts a fully functional biology lab and team of scientists on board. During the pandemic in 2020, Rothberg and his team spent most of the year on the superyacht developing a low-cost, at-home coronavirus testing kit.

In 2016, President Obama awarded Rothberg the National Medal of Technology and Innovation for his work developing fast, cost-effective DNA-sequencing technology.

Rothberg earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon and master’s and doctoral degrees in biology from Yale.

Rothberg, who was born into a family of entrepreneurs, holds more than 400 patents. A founder of several key geonomics and DNA-sequencing companies, Rothberg got his start as a graduate student at Yale in 1991 when he founded CuraGen, one of the first geonomics companies at the time, according to a UM article about him.

CuraGen went public in 1999, valued at $5 billion.

“I’ve spent my career building disruptive solutions to improve the lives of those I love,” according to the UM article.

A Miami Herald photo of a boat docked behind Jonathan Rothberg’s home originally published with this story incorrectly identified the vessel as the one towing Ella Riley Adler when she was killed by another boat while wakeboarding off Key Biscayne Saturday, May 11, 2024. Rothberg does own the boat that towed Adler, but, it was not the vessel shown in the photo.

Authorities ID boat operator who fatally struck 15-year-old Ella Adler

By CBS Miami Team

Updated on: May 15, 2024 / 6:46 PM EDT / CBS/CNN

MIAMI - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission identified the boat operator in connection to the death of 15-year-old Ella Adler, who was struck while water skiing in Biscayne Bay on Saturday.

Authorities say Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, of Coral Gables, was the boat's operator.

They say he was the only occupant of the vessel on that day, according to the one-page incident report.

FWC24ON0038760_updated-2 by sergio.candido on Scribd

The boat was discovered behind a home in the Hammocks Oaks neighborhood in Coral Gables. Neighbors described the man who lives in the home as a family man and an experienced boater. They said he was devastated by what happened.

Rodney Barreto, the Chairman of the FWC,  said this about Ella's death, "It's touched our community in a way."

"When you're 15 years old you don't expect to go out on a boat and not come home."

The new preliminary FWC report says she had been on a boat with 12 other people and was being towed while on a wakeboard.

Records show Alonso owns the house where the vessel was seized.

"The gentleman who was driving the boat who is cooperating with us is Mr. Alonso," said Barreto.

"We have some physical evidence that we have recovered that we have sent to our state lab for testing."

Barreto says officers used witness descriptions to find the boat.

"It was good old-fashioned police work by our officers.
We asked them to go up and down the canals from Coconut Grove to South Miami. They went up and down the canals with the physical description they had and recognized the boat."

Batteto said there was no evidence pointing to reckless or drunk driving.

It's not known if the driver will be cited or charged.

"Our job is to gather information and present it to the State Attorney, so they can do their job."

The loss of Ella Adler prompts this warning from Barreto: "Make sure you pay attention to the water and always look around because things can happen on the water and they can happen very quickly."

"We encourage people to use a lot of caution and go to boating safety schools."

"Florida has the most registered boats in the country and Miami-Dade has the most registered boats than any county in Florida."

boat.jpg

Ella, the granddaughter of US Ambassador to Belgium Michael M. Adler, was water skiing with friends Saturday near the Nixon Beach sandbar when she fell in the water while being towed and was struck by another boat. The operator of that boat never stopped.

An all out search was then launched to find the boat and driver.

On Wednesday, Florida Fish and Wildlife believed they had found it.

"I am pleased to report that we have a vessel in custody that matches the description given by witnesses," said FWC's George Reynaud. "The boat is in our custody and the owner is cooperating with us."

On Monday morning, hundreds of people attended services for Adler at Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach.

On Tuesday, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden stopped by in person to offer her condolences and be with the family.

"We are honored that the First Lady paid a shiva call to our family during this time of immense pain. We are touched by their support and love and we are proud to call the President and First Lady our friends for over 40 years," according to a statement from the family.

Adler was a freshman at Ransom Everglades High School and a ballerina with the Miami City Ballet.

"We are heartbroken," Ransom Everglades posted on Facebook. "Ella Adler '27 shined in our classrooms and on our stages, and she embodied the mission of Ransom Everglades School. We wish peace and comfort to her family."

"We at Miami City Ballet and the Miami City Ballet School are utterly devastated by the heartbreaking news of this tragic accident," said the organization which described Adler as a beloved student and a magnificent dancer who graced their stage. "Our hearts go out to Ella's family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and adoring her. As we come together, we will profoundly grieve the loss of Ella, and hold dear the precious memories we were fortunate enough to create with her."

"We extend our deepest condolences to the Adler family at this difficult time," the US Embassy to Belgium said in a statement. "Out of respect for their privacy, we have nothing further."

Anyone who saw the accident or anyone who might have video footage or information about it is urged to call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).

Sailboat that washed up at Jericho and damaged yacht club gets owner fined

Megan Devlin

The Canadian Coast Guard has issued a $15,000 fine to the owner of a derelict sailboat that washed up on Jericho Beach in 2023 and sat there for months.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada said in a news release that the damaged boat could have injured beachgoers because of its damaged and unstable state.

It also damaged the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, hitting the main support beams and dock beside the building.

As well, the fibreglass hull would’ve polluted the environment as pieces of it broke off.

The boat washed up in 2023, and the owner failed to comply with instructions to remove it by January 24, 2024.

The $15,000 penalty was issued under the Wrecked, Abandoned, or Hazardous Vessels Act on April 3.

“The issuance of a penalty is a last resort when all other avenues have been exhausted. Under the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act, the Canadian Coast Guard is required to publicly report the penalties issued to vessel owners,” Fisheries and Oceans Canada said.
