Wave Watch ready to sail for Laguna Beach marine safety

Under overcast skies in Newport Harbor, Laguna Beach city officials and dignitaries gathered Friday morning to introduce a rescue vessel the city hopes will bring brighter days ahead for the marine safety department.

During a christening ceremony, the name Wave Watch was assigned to the vessel. Mayor Sue Kempf then smashed a bottle over the front of the boat, a tradition performed for good luck on future seafaring voyages.

“Wave Watch makes a significant milestone for our city, as it reinstates our rescue vessel program, which has been dormant since the ’90s,” Kempf said. “This vessel bridges a critical 7.5-mile gap in our offshore capabilities, ensuring we can provide more efficient and effective emergency operations on the water.

“The vessel’s ability to provide a stable platform for emergency medical care and [to] store essential life-saving equipment significantly enhances our community’s safety.”

Acting Marine Safety Chief Kai Bond said the 33-foot Crystaliner is equipped with an 800-megahertz radio system and very high-frequency radio for ship-to-ship communication to aid in coordination efforts with responding agencies during emergencies.

The boat came to Laguna Beach as a transfer of surplus property from the state, Bond said, adding that it was partially funded by a donation from residents Steve Chadima and Mark Porterfield.

Public safety personnel from several coastal cities — Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach among them — attended the ceremony at Marina Park in Newport Beach.

“We’re able to move dive teams around, so when we do have an incident that requires a dive team, we’re able to deploy them from this vessel,” Bond said. “It’s essentially an on-water platform for all emergency operations within the city of Laguna Beach, and we can provide mutual aid. We can run up to Newport. We can run down south and assist in those instances, as well.”

The vessel will allow those rescued an opportunity to rest, rather than immediately being navigated back through the surf line to the beach. Marine safety personnel can return to the harbor to bring those in need of further assistance to paramedics, if necessary.

As operators and deckhands train in preparation for the busy summer season, the vessel has been called into action to perform a rescue already. Bond confirmed that the boat was utilized to rescue a swimmer in distress at Christmas Cove Beach on April 27.

Bear spotted hiding in tree in Town 'N Country neighborhood

TOWN 'N COUNTRY, Fla. — A bear was spotted in a tree in a Town 'N Country neighborhood Saturday, and it's causing quite a stir.

"We got a ring notification saying there's been a bear sighting in your neighborhood... I've never seen one this close to a neighborhood!" Mehak Aggarwal explained.

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) laid out treats for the bear, trying to lure it to climb down.

"We are doing this solely for the purpose of doing a live trap. We would rather have them come down willingly, with motivation. We don't want to be using a tranquilizer," Forest Rothchild with FWC explained.

Bears are more active this time of year, and the FWC wants to remind people to give bears plenty of space and to never feed or approach them.

The FWC said that if given enough space, bears will typically move along on their own.

"Most likely it's going to go somewhere like Ocala National Forest. We really strive to make sure they can go to a place to find a new habitat and a safe location being away from people," Rothchild said.

The bear finally climbed down on its own several hours later.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach is hosting an action-packed two-day celebration of American patriotism ahead of Memorial Day , a time to honor those who died while serving in the U.S. military.

The Hyundai Air & Sea Show marks the barrier-island city’s eighth annual national salute with representatives of the U.S. military’s six branches, first responders, and allies.

The maroon beret-wearing Red Devils from the British Army’s Parachute Regiment joined. Mickey Markoff, the show’s executive producer, told Local 10 News the schedule of events honors heroes.

“They are writing the blank check of sacrificing their life for our entire nation to protect our freedom,” Markoff said . “The whole idea is to say thanks.”

The choreographed beachside tribute was set to continue from noon to 6 p.m., on Sunday. There were events Saturday night that included a concert and a fireworks display.

Markoff also said the primary viewing area is along Ocean Drive — between 11 and 14 streets — at the heart of the Art Deco Historic District in South Beach.

Miami Beach police officers enforced temporary traffic and parking changes that limited drivers’ access to Ocean Drive, and Collins and Washington avenues.

It will be hot on Sunday. Sun protection and comfortable clothes and footwear are a must. There is an interactive area for kids, food vendors, and water access at Lummus Park , at 1130 Ocean Dr., which also has public restrooms. Admission is free. Cheryl was one of Riverdale 's best characters across its seven seasons, so Berlanti may look to Petsch again for his new project.

Petsch teaming up with Greg Berlanti would likely signal that fans could expect Scooby-Doo to be similar in style to Riverdale, with a focus on supernatural mysteries and young adult themes.

Mindy Kaling's Velma tried and failed to put a subversive twist on the Mystery Gang, but Greg Berlanti could shake up the characters just like he did for the Archie Comic gang in Riverdale.

Canadian Coast Guard Issues $15,000 Fine for a Hazardous Vessel

Wrecked, abandoned, or hazardous boats can pose threats to the environment, local communities, and economies. Through the Oceans Protection Plan, the Government of Canada continues to take action to address problem vessels and ensure owner accountability.

Vancouver, British Columbia - Wrecked, abandoned, or hazardous boats can pose threats to the environment, local communities, and economies. Through the Oceans Protection Plan, the Government of Canada continues to take action to address problem vessels and ensure owner accountability.

Recently, the Canadian Coast Guard exercised its authority under the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act to issue a $15,000 fine, in the form of an administrative monetary penalty, to a vessel owner in British Columbia. The owner was required to pay within 30 days or to apply for a review hearing with the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada.

On April 3, 2024, the Canadian Coast Guard issued a fine to the owner of an unnamed 30 foot sailing vessel located on the Jericho Beach breakwater, Vancouver, British Columbia. The vessel was found to pose a hazard to the marine environment and public safety based on the following criteria:

• The vessel was in a location accessible to the general public, and due to its instability and damaged state, could have caused injury to persons entering.
• The vessel caused structural damage to the administrative building of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and the main support beams for the dock beside the building.
• The continued damage to the fiberglass hull of the vessel would produce pollution to the marine environment through broken parts drifting away.

The issuance of this fine comes after the vessel owner failed to comply with the Canadian Coast Guard’s directions to remove the vessel and take all reasonable measures to prevent pollution from entering the marine environment by January 24, 2024.

Owners are responsible for the costs of addressing their problem vessel. This includes cleanup or repairs, and any remediation action taken by the Canadian Coast Guard. The Canadian Coast Guard works with vessel owners to address their problem vessels. The issuance of a penalty is a last resort when all other avenues have been exhausted. Under the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act , the Canadian Coast Guard is required to publicly report the penalties issued to vessel owners on its website .

Quick facts

This is the third time that a fine has been issued to a hazardous vessel owner in British Columbia and the fourth Administrative Monetary Penalty to be issued in Canada.

Vessel owners are responsible for maintaining and keeping their vessels in good working order, and properly disposing of the vessel when it reaches the end of its life.

The Canadian Coast Guard maintains a publicly available national inventory of problem vessels across Canada to better track these vessels and help prioritize which ones should be dealt with first. To date, over 2,000 wrecked, abandoned, or hazardous boats have been reported.

Since 2016, under the Oceans Protection Plan, the Government of Canada has funded over 580 projects to remove and dispose of wrecked, abandoned, or hazardous vessels across Canada and has made it illegal to abandon a vessel in Canada’s waters.
