MANUFACTURING

Sailing range, power range.

Located in Cape Town, South Africa, Robertson and Caine currently manufacture 3 sailing catamarans and 3 power catamarans for the world markets. Ranging in size from 40-53ft.

We strive to be the benchmark for ocean cruising catamarans. Through innovative design, development of new materials and processes, handcrafted skills and strict quality standards.

R&C continues to position itself as a world-class manufacturer with the objective to deliver quality products throughout the world.

All of our boats are built in accordance with ISO standards and are certified by the International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) in accordance with the Recreational Craft Directive 2013/53/EU. Additionally, our product is also certified by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) to ABYC standards. We are members of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA).

Robertson and Caine Head Office

With plants covering over 60 000 sqm, manufacturing a range of six models by a Team of 2000+ persons, Robertson and Caine is focused upon producing world-class catamarans of exceptional build quality. Adhering to sustainable and safe production practices.

Robertson and Caine Bolt Street

Our design philosophy is integration simplified. We blend the ease of boat handling with effective boat speed, without compromising onboard comfort and functionality. Our inhouse design Teams in Tampa and Cape Town, constantly innovate form and function, producing award winning industry benchmark catamarans in power and sail.

Robertson and Caine Catamaran Design

Construction

To build for solid blue water performance, Robertson and Caine use superior materials, fit for purpose, with every step of the build process, adhering to global standards and subject to stringent quality control. Robertson and Caine catamarans dominate the charter fleets of The Mooring and Sunsail, thus are built to be reliable, with low maintenance.

The construction of these vessels incorporates various manufacturing processes such as Hand Laminating, Vacuum Infusion as well as Resin Transfer Moulding to build the required composite parts. For structural parts, multiaxial E-Glass is used in combination with PVC Foam Core within vacuum infusion processes to provide rigidity, impact resistant and buoyant vessels.

Isophthalic/Vinyl Ester resins and NPG gelcoats prevents the onset of hydrolysis. The strong hull laminate is light and durable resulting in a dynamic weight-carrying capacity and excellent motion reaction.

Manufacturing techniques such as vacuum infusion, RTM Light, air demoulding and full deck/hull infusion are used to build a lighter, sturdier product, with greater performance potential.

Each of our six models has their own dedicated production facilities from moulding to final assembly. These are served by a joinery manufacturing facility and a distribution centre. Three catamarans are launched weekly. The catamarans are then shipped globally, with the mast already stepped, through the Port of Cape Town on transport vessels.

Robertson and Caine Deck Turning

5-axis CNC Machining

5-Axis machining involves using a CNC system to move the table/bed and cutting tool along five different axes simultaneously. This enables the machining of very complex parts, which is why 5-axis is especially popular for marine applications.

All the machining and milling is done on advanced styling and tooling base materials with precision robotic systems ensuring perfect accuracy each and every time.

Robertson and Caine Plug Construction

Hand Built Plugs

After the assembly of CNC cut timber profiles, our skilled workforce effect the cladding of the plug. Each step of the process is closely monitored by a team of Composite Engineers and tooling experts.

The plug will then be polished to a class "A" finish and handed over for a final quality check and approval. At this stage, new moulds may be developed for production.

Robertson and Caine Infusion

Deck & Hull Infusion

The resin-infused Deck & Hull laminate is strong, light and durable resulting in a dynamic weight-carrying capacity and excellent motion reaction.

Robertson and Caine Foam Cores

High-density PVC foam cores are extensively used throughout all the resin-infused parts. The cores are all CNC cut and nested to precise dimensions as per the engineering drawings.

Robertson and Caine Advanced Fabrics

Advanced Fabrics

Multiaxial E-glass stitched fabrics ensure maximum strength and promote a very high calibre glass-to-resin ratios. These fabrics includes, but are not limited to, unidirectional, biaxial and quadraxial E-glass.

Robertson and Caine Bulkheads

Collision Bulkheads

In case of hull damage, watertight collision bulkheads at bow and stern prevent water from entering the hull.

Robertson and Caine Internal Modules

Internal Modules

Internal modules are assembled offline which in turn allows for ease of production as well as enhanced quality control, before final fitment.

Robertson and Caine Osmosis

NPG gelcoats and a Vinyl Ester resins are used for underwater applications to ensure a resin-rich E-glass barrier layer is achieved which improves resistance to hydrolysis and helps prevent osmosis.

Robertson and Caine RTM Infusion

Light Resin Transfer Moulding

Automated moulding processes are used to allow for repeatability at the same weight & quality every time.

At Robertson & Caine, we systematically evaluate the quality of our products at every manufacturing stage to ensure that quality standards are met.

Feedback from our charter partners and private owners is used to improve the design and reliability of our sailing and power yachts..

Israel-Gaza latest: Spain bans ships carrying weapons for Israel from docking at its ports - as Gaza hospital chief issues desperate plea amid 'massacre'

The UN's top court will hear from Israel today as it responds to charges of genocide over its actions in Gaza brought by South Africa. Meanwhile, the head of a Gaza hospital issues a desperate plea for a ceasefire, accusing Israel of deliberately killing civilians as part of a "massacre".

After considerable delay, the US built pier is now operational off Gaza. Weather and security conditions have been blamed, but in truth this was supposed to be up and running some weeks before now. The floating pier is estimated to have cost more than $250m (£197m) to construct.

Early on Friday morning, the first trucks began moving aid ashore.

It is a complicated network involving the US military, private contractors, IDF and United Nations - no US forces are expected to enter Gaza.

The port of Larnaca in Cyprus is being used as a staging and screening post, as ships have already been preloaded with aid in anticipation.

Commercial ships will offload the aid at a floating pier a few kilometres offshore. Smaller US naval ships will then transport it to a long causeway stretching off the coast. From there, lorries will make the final part of the journey to a secure onshore facility before it is taken into Gaza.

If operations run smoothly, 150 trucks a day could enter Gaza - that would significantly bolster aid, although it isn't a substitute for land crossings and some way below the 500 trucks a day that are needed.

By some estimates, the first 48 hours of operations could see as much aid enter Gaza as all the aid drops to date, combined.

Images show the UK and US militaries working together to assemble the temporary Trident Pier to deliver aid into Gaza.

British and US forces are working with civilian organisations, other governments and the UN to get aid into the enclave.

Aid has started flowing along the pier after construction was completed yesterday.

Defence secretary Grant Shapps said: "The newly operational pier off the coast of Gaza will enable truckloads of humanitarian aid to reach Palestinians in dire need.

"The UK continues to play a key role in this herculean international effort – supporting logistics coordination in Cyprus, deploying RFA Cardigan Bay to help US personnel constructing and operating the pier and providing UK aid for delivery.

"We expect the first shipment to provide enough provisions to feed 11,000 people for a month."

The head of Shifa hospital in Gaza has issued a desperate plea for a ceasefire.

In a piece published in The Lancet titled "Stop the Gaza genocide immediately", Dr Muhammad Abu Salmiya said Israel was deliberately targeting civilians and accused the IDF of conducting a "massacre" in the enclave.

He said Israeli forces had been shooting men at point-blank range, threatening to rape women and using detainees as human shields.

"What is happening in Gaza cannot be fully described in words," he wrote.

"This brief Correspondence is a plea to every human being to help stop this genocide right now—we cannot live like this; the world should not be silent about the killing of civilians in the thousands."

Israel has always maintained that it takes great care to avoid civilian casualties as it seeks to destroy Hamas following its October 7 attack.

The Lancet states that it takes a neutral position in respect to territorial claims.

The Houthis claim they downed an American MQ9 drone on Thursday evening over Yemen's southeastern province of Maareb.

The Iran-backed group said they would release images and videos to support their claim, and added that they had targeted the drone using a locally made surface-to-air missile.

The group's leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi said yesterday that any ship from any company heading to Israeli ports will be targeted  in any area their capabilities could reach, not only limited to the Red Sea region.

At least 35,303 Palestinians have been killed and 79,261 have been wounded since October, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza has said.

Most of Gaza's population of 2.3 million people have been displaced since fighting began.

The war began with a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7 in which Palestinian militants killed around 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages.

Israel says it takes great care to avoid civilian casualties as it seeks to destroy Hamas following its October attack.

For context:  While some Israeli officials have sought to cast doubt on fatality figures given out by the Palestinian Health Authority in Gaza, a number of independent groups say they have proved to be largely reliable and broadly in line with those later produced by the UN and Israel itself.

Examination of data from previous Gaza conflicts - the Hamas-run health ministry's counts compared with the post-war United Nations analysis - shows that the initial data is largely accurate with, at most, a 10-12% discrepancy.

Spain will not authorise ships carrying weapons for Israel to call at its ports, the country's foreign minister has said.

The country has refused to let a ship call at the southeastern port of Cartagena.

The ship was the first to be denied access to a Spanish port, foreign minister Jose Manuel Albares said.

He added that the refusal was consistent with the government's decision not to grant weapon export licences to Israel since 7 October as Spain doesn't "want to contribute to war".

Hello and welcome back to our live coverage of the Israel-Gaza war.

Aid has begun to be delivered via a temporary pier built in Gaza, the US military has said.

The shipment is the first in an operation that American military officials anticipate could scale up to 150 truckloads a day entering the enclave as Israel presses in on the southern city of Rafah.

US officials and aid groups warned the pier project is not considered a substitute for land deliveries that could bring in all the food, water and fuel needed in Gaza.

Here is a rundown of key developments over the last 24 hours:

  • South Africa has told a UN court that the situation in Gaza has reached a "new and horrific stage" as the country attempts to convince the organisation to order a ceasefire;
  • Israel is due to respond to charges of genocide at the International Court of Justice later in The Hague later today;
  • Republicans in Washington have rebuked Joe Biden for pausing a shipment of bombs to Israel;
  • Israel is set to abolish its free trade agreement with Turkey and impose a 100% tariff on other imports from the country in retaliation to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's decision to halt exports to Israel.

That's all for our live coverage for the moment.

Our regular updates will continue tomorrow.

As detailed in our 14.14 post, the UN's top court has today opened a hearing calling for emergency measures to halt Israel's onslaught in Rafah.

As the hearing got under way, judges at the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, were told the Palestinian people faced "ongoing annihilation".

South Africa wants the court to impose the emergency measures to protect Rafah, a southern Gaza city where more than a million Palestinians have been sheltering.

It is also asking it to order Israel to allow unimpeded access to Gaza for UN officials, organisations providing humanitarian aid, and journalists and investigators.

It says Israel has so far ignored and violated earlier court orders.

"The key point today is that Israel's declared aim of wiping Gaza from the map is about to be realised," South Africa's legal representative, Vaughan Lowe, told the panel of judges.

"Further, evidence of appalling crimes and atrocities is literally being destroyed and bulldozed, in effect wiping the slate clean for those who've committed these crimes and making a mockery of justice."

Israel, which has denounced South Africa's claim that it is violating the 1949 Genocide Convention as baseless, will respond tomorrow. In previous filings it claimed it had stepped up efforts to get humanitarian aid into Gaza as the ICJ had ordered.

When Yoav Gallant recorded a televised statement criticising Israel’s judicial reforms in March 2023, Benjamin Netanyahu sacked him.

A few days later, after massive street protests, the defence minister was reinstated.

Gallant has again taken to the television to criticise Israel's Prime Minister, this time over the lack of a "day-after plan" for Gaza.

He implied that Netanyahu's indecision was harming the country's security and leading to a de-facto military control of Gaza.

The bad-blood between prime minister and defence minister is no secret, but thrusting it into the open in this way was a dramatic move.

That he remains in office, despite calls from the far right to dismiss him, says as much about the weakness of Netanyahu's hold on power as it does about the logic behind Gallant's intervention.

On Wednesday night, around the same time Gallant was holding his press conference, five Israeli soldiers were killed and seven seriously wounded in a friendly-fire incident in Jabaliya, northern Gaza.

Jabaliya was one of the first areas Israeli forces entered, following 7 October. Four months ago they announced they had dismantled Hamas battalions in the refugee camp, and yet they have been forced to return in large numbers, because Hamas has regrouped and remains a threat there.

That's what insurgencies do, but Netanyahu seemingly failed to foresee it. How often, in wars past, have we seen militant forces fade away in the face of a superior army, only to return later, alive to fight another day.

Procrastinating on a plan for civilian rule of Gaza, as Netanyahu has done for months now, has left a vacuum in much of Gaza and so, surprise, surprise, Hamas has returned to areas that Israel had declared clear.

Israeli forces have also returned, this time with experience of the particular battlefield but increasingly frustrated about the political indecision that has brought them back; battle-hardened, but war-weary.

Lacking a clear strategy, and without a vision for the "day-after", Israeli troops risk being dragged into a war lasting years not months. Maybe that is Netanyahu's plan after all, but his call for "total victory" is a fantasy – militant groups and terror organisations have an annoying habit of regenerating.

What is needed is an alternative to Hamas, another option for governing Gaza. That would put pressure on the group and create a political pathway for Arab states, and the West, to coalesce around.

Gallant knows it and so, reportedly, do senior Israeli security figures. Gallant is trying to force Netanyahu to make a decision, something he famously avoids, but with Israeli soldiers still dying in Gaza it soon won’t just be his defence minister publicly turning against him.
