sailing yacht bojar

Johan Anker was considered an artist in yacht design - greatly concerned with the beauty of lines and BOJAR doesn’t disappoint. Indeed as a boat of such breathtaking and effortless beauty, a classic gem; she genuinely lifts the human spirit and perhaps even defines the term “classic yacht.” With her keel weight and displacement balanced at approximately 50 / 50 she is an extremely effective sailing boat. Perhaps no surprise then she was the winner of a 'Je ne sais quois’ at the 2012 Panerai Regatta at Cowes; third in class in the Round the Island race and more recently impressive results at the RYS Bicentenary Regatta. In these days of restorations, it is rare to find a boat both so original and in such fine condition. Given she has had only a few owners throughout her life – the last but one for 28 years, the short Norwegian sailing seasons then with nearly every winter spent inside her own boat shed will certainly have helped. BOJAR can be classic raced with family and friends or easily sailed by just two people, which is unusual for a yacht of this size and vintage. She is truly exceptional.

Spotlight – Bojar – 52 FT Flush Deck Cutter 1937

BOJAR was launched in 1937 as ‘Ilmen V’ and was one of the last classic yacht designs from the board of Johan Anker. She rates as a 10-Metre class and was originally built with similar dimensions to a F class that was designed to cruise and race with the metre classes. BOJAR has a slightly greater beam requested by her first owner Ludvig Swinndal in his quest for the perfect cruiser racer.

Johan Anker Bojar

A few years later she passed to Ragnvald Jacobsen who renamed her ‘BOJAR’ and owned her from 1941 to 1967. Jacobsen was also a talented helmsman, winning many regattas in the 5.5 and 6 Metre classes.

Racing Notes

BOJAR had a long sailing career in Norway before joining the Solent based fleet of classic yachts in 2012.

In Cowes she has participated in the annual Panerai Cowes and Classic Week regattas showing impressive form, which led to an invitation to the RYS Bicentenary in 2015. This event saw Bojar classic yacht racing against Stormy Weather, Dorade, Argyll And Tomahawk as well as 20 of the local English based classics including Cetawayo, Infanta, Opposition and Whooper.

Fleet and class racing at these regattas saw BOJAR achieve some impressive results against more modern designs both inshore and in the offshore conditions experienced in the Round the Island classic regatta races.

This racing programme has provided a spectacular series of photographs that evidence the success of the newly designed sail plans and IRC 0.973 rating optimisation without compromising the originality or integrity of the 1937 build.

BROKER'S COMMENTS

Johan Anker was an artist in yacht design greatly concerned with the beauty of lines - BOJAR is a boat of such breathtaking and effortless beauty; she genuinely lifts the human spirit and perhaps defining the term ‘classic yacht’. A ballast ratio at approximately 50 / 50 she is an extremely effective sailing boat. Rarely off the podium at any classic regatta – at the RYS Bicentenary Regatta BOJAR proved an equal match for icons DORADE and STORMY WEATHER. In these days of restorations, it is rare to find a boat both so original and in such fine condition. With only a few owners throughout her life – the last but one for 28 years, the short Norwegian sailing seasons with winters in a boat shed will also have helped. BOJAR can be raced with family and friends or easily cruised by just two people - unusual for a yacht of this size and vintage. Highly recommended.

Lymington Bow Of Classic Yacht

What is a Classic Yacht?

We're very fortunate to see yachts in all shapes and sizes berth at lymington yacht haven.

Lymington Class Yacht Sailing

Boating experts, boat owners and boating enthusiasts all differ on what defines a ‘Classic Yacht’.

Some say a 'Classic Yacht' has to be a wooden hull with handmade craftmanship. Others have definitions that allow steel boats into the 'Classic Yacht' category while some argue it is purely about the emotion and history related to a yacht. But should the definition include a concrete rule about what year the boat was built? Or should this category of boat be defined by the style of their sail - for example a gaff-rigged or cutter?

Here is a collection of opinions and definitions from around the sailing community. After reading this, you'll have to make up your own mind as to what the definition should be!

British Classic Yacht Club (BCYC)

"The definition of a Classic Yacht is subjective, but includes some of the most beautiful yachts ever built; Some have notable racing records, whilst others represent design milestones in the development of sailing yachts. Many have been rescued and lovingly restored."   Read their full definition

Cowes Classic Week

"There is no real definition of a classic yacht and the convention has been for a long time at classic regattas to use a cut-off date of around 1970 for boats built in wood or steel."

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

“Most of us in the yachting scene know a genuine Classic when we see one. She was built years ago when all yachts were things of beauty and grace with fine lines and acres of canvas. The survivors of that golden era are unmistakably classic."  Read their full definition

Classic Boat Magazine

Written by the original Editor of Classic Boat Magazine in the first issue in January 1987, Pete Greenfield takes a winding look at the definition(s) or Classic Boats and attempts to categorise certain fleets and classes of boats.   Read his full article

Classic Boat Forum

“A Classic boat has pedigree, style and is part of the heritage of boat design whilst being an outstanding example of its type.”  Join the forum discussion

Griff Rhys Jones, Owner of SY Argyll, 1948 57" Yelw

In an interview with Privatsea Magazine , comedian Griff Rhys Jones discussed why he was attracted to his classic yacht Argyll and the trials of owning her: "Beauty in classic yachts is a major factor. It is not an investment. There is no return on wooden boats... You buy these boats in order to love them"

Andrew Pearson, owner of SY Bojar, 1937 52" Cutter

“It is really a design concept. The BCYC believe it based on the design concept of original boats so there isn’t an absolutely fixed concept but it rules out modern boats made of glass fibre and similar materials. It excludes modern GRP boats but it does include modern replicas called   Spirits of Tradition ."

So then, what defines a 'Classic Yacht'?

Whether your answer to this question is based on age, materials, individuality or pure passion, one thing that can't be argued is the stunning aesthetic appeal that a classic yacht possesses. Glancing through the images of a few selected yachts on this page, the overwhelming reaction, I’m sure, will be the same – “wow, she’s beautiful”.

Johan Anker 1937 Cutter “Bojar”

BOJAR was launched in 1937 as ILMEN V and she was one of the last designs from the board of Johan Anker.

Anker’s reputation is part due to his incredible success in International Rule designs, his creation of the iconic Dragon One Design – and of all the famous designers of his era, he was arguably the best helmsman. Anker often watched the offerings of Messrs Fife and Mylne cross the finish line behind him – This “feel” for a boat helped him create some of the fastest and most beautiful designs of any period.

BOJAR’s dimensions are similar to the 10 Metre class, but with the slightly greater beam, that her first owner had requested, in his quest for the perfect cruiser racer. In due course she passed to Ragnvald Jacobsen, re naming her BOJAR, and keeping her from 1941 to 1967. Jacobsen, was also a talented helmsman, winning many regattas in the 5.5 and 6 Metre classes.

The current owner has owned her for 28 years, enjoying cruising and classic racing in home waters. BOJAR can be easily sailed by only two people, which is unusual for a yacht of this size and vintage.

Sailing Yachts For Sale

While they may be far outnumbered by their motor yacht peers, sailing yachts are unique in terms of regatta capabilities and eco-friendly performance. Most buyers of a sailing yacht for sale wouldn’t swap their bluewater cruisers or regatta winners for anything. After all, there's nothing quite like sipping ice-cold mojitos to the soundtrack of a sail flapping gently overhead.
